WEBCOMIC 'CAUSE Y'ALL ASKED: http://wildwestscifi.net/gallows-humor/13683-gallows-humor-prologue

You are Brianna la Croix, journeyman necromancer, and after spending days worried sick about both of your lovers, the first thing you do is talk to an undead chicken.

It makes sense in context, damn it!
>>
>>46154011
"Tell me about the battle," you prompt, softly.

"Your sister is a cunning warrior," Fetch compliments. With great dignity, the chicken walks into your lap, and permits you to snuggle him close. "But there were many soldiers, and only so many of us. Her demon baffled them with illusions, permitting us to get close and cut down the servants of the Traitor, but a mighty blow from a war mace crushed my brother in blind fury, and scattered his bones. He never had a chance."

"He never understood what happened, Fetch. He didn't truly live, not like you do."

"I do not truly live either, my queen," Fetch points out. "I am, or I am /not/. I am a part of you, and happy to be so, but what if it had been me in the path of that mace? What if I face a foe that does not underestimate me, or swats me down like an insect?"

"Worried about your own death?" you murmur.

"I am worried about who will remain to remind you that you are allowed to have hope, Brianna," Fetch tells you.

You laugh, tears welling up in your eyes, and hug the tiny knight.

"You, Sir Fetch," you chide, "are entirely too pure for this vale of tears."

Unless Caretaker's got something for us, maybe it's time to refine techniques that Bri's grandpa taught her.

Hell of a perspective change Vox.
>>
>>46154171
Just thinking about which characters can still UNLOCK MORE POTENTIAL.

Amy's definitely on the top, as she doesn't strictly need new toys, just practice with refining her wings to do a variety of applications(stealth, eavesdropping, directed sound blasts, etc)

Nate's got a lot of freedom to pursue new gadgets or help out with gun stuff, but technique-wise it's more reliant on what new stuff he can pick up rather than working with what he has.

Bri can.....do a LOT of things, but she doesn't have nearly enough time to get as good returns as the others can for battle application.
>>
>>46154124
> Focus on helping with Natalia and cleaning up the loose ends from New Hell
> Tremble slightly, in a shaky grip. The arms around you squeeze for all they're worth.

New Hell needs to be unfucked, and I want to see more of the inside of Natalia's head.
>>
>>46154124
>Focus on helping with Natalia and clearing up the loose ends from New Hell.
As much as I want to learn some nifty new tricks from Meadows or Caretaker, we have a job to do. Especially now that we've spared a /second/ Chain-Holder. Don't get me wrong, I voted for giving Natalia a second chance. We just have to make sure that we don't screw it up. Also, need to have that conversation about the great big Dick's plans.

>Tremble slightly, in a shaky grip. The arms around you squeeze for all they're worth.
The third option screams 'adorable Jewel/Cherry moment', but I like to see our therapy sessions through.

>>46154253
I've been wondering if there aren't ways to mix some magic into Amy's songs. Aside from the powerful mind-influence her tunes possess, maybe she could learn to unbind summonings or sabotage magical defenses.

Nate's going to be pretty busy with his mother, but I'd imagine he'd like to continue learning. New Hell would be a great opportunity (Maybe as an assistant to Travis?), and it'd also give Amy and Brianna (and us) a chance to see him doing something other than being a Hero or Woundseeker.
>>
>>46154398
To expand, I think we can reserve alchemy/medicine/necromancy training for after we deal with the Roost. Also, I think Witch-Bats will definitely be called for. Amy's going to need the extra set of talons.

Also, a good way to piss off the Lush once we reach the Cornucopia will be to use Rot (that other branch of necromancy the Caretaker could have taught us) to destroy his wine/hashish.
>>
Early bird bump.
>>
>>46154124
>> Train (in what?)

We need to learn more about making good minions, and possibly about improving existing minions. The small animals and hands were good for the early levels of the Dungeon, but I fear that we're going to need something a little more formidable now that we'll soon be heading into the second half of the Dungeon. Fetch's late brother needs replacing, and we should try and replace him with something that's an unquestionable upgrade.

> Move a lot; you're being fidgeted with, and don't stay still for more than a few moments.
>>
>>46155919
Our problem is less lacking the knowledge to make minion than it is lacking the materials.
And we don't so much lack materials as lack morally acceptable materials.

If we just went and dug up a graveyard we'd be set, but Bri would never do that. We've limited ourselves to only using animals and that one necromancer as upgrade material, and animals have been in short supply for the last few levels.
>>
>>46155919
the chickens are already maxed out.

The boar is basically vanilla, though.
>>
>>46156045
>and animals have been in short supply for the last few levels.
Plot relevant animals are not the only animals.
We did have an option to just go and get some bats, no questions asked.
>>
>>46156239
Bats are tiny and provide little to work with. If we want to both create substantial new minions and upgrade them all significantly, we need something more along the lines of a dozen pigs or cattle.

On the plus side, the next level is apparently the food production hub, so livestock should be available to some degree.
>>
>>46156347
Or we could get another chicken, its not like they're rare.
>>
>>46156347
On the topic of minions, how about a snake? Obviously lends itself quite well to poison, and death in general. Could literally throw it at people for a surprise attack. Plus, later on we can graft on wings and turn it into a dragon.
I blame the desire for shoulder sized dragons entirely on Anne McCaffrey
>>
>>46156416
>>46156436
>Could literally throw it at people for a surprise attack
who's doing the throwing?

>wings
I don't think there's enough....space...on a snake for functioning wing muscles. Maybe TWO rows of vertebrae would be enough support....
>>
>>46156448
Think envenomed with justice, but hiding up someone's sleeve.

You're probably right about the lack of space. But then again, undead snake, no muscles anyways

Stuffed doll perspective? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!
>>
>>46156682
So...pocket sand-I mean snake.

In that case, it would be better on Nate, as people are by default going to expect thrown stuff from Amy, and Bri to a lesser extent.

hmmmm, I'm not feeling it too much. Not much room for upgrades, and at least the chickens have staying power due to not being a big enough threat to destroy until you realize they're poisoned.

and flight is going to be pretty much impossible. You need them leather wings, even supposing you got around the heavy bone problem.

I would like to point out two things.

Snakes are actually quite quick, and they can climb. A stealthy spy is handy.

More importantly....all those little tiny needles the are made of. Little tiny needles that could be dripping with necromantic venom. Three to six feet of poisonous needles attacking by surprise....
>>
>>46158716
However, once it stabbed somebody with those needles (which might be difficult, as I can't imagine any way in which it might exert a notable force downwards) it would probably be stationary, and as such basically dead. Re-dead. Dead dead. You know what I mean.
>>
>>46158833
Constriction is a thing. But yes, you might be right.
>>
I'm awake. Morning shit, then will call and write.
>>
>>46158904
Constriction, however, relies on low friction to work, otherwise nothing is moving. This might be slightly less important here, but it probably wouldn't work well, still.
>>
>>46159404
....I will refrain from pointing out the obvious.
>>
>>46159511
That I have difficulty getting my point across? I am sorry for that, but I fear I can't suddenly chose english as my first language.

The point is: Because of the high friction evoked by the spikes, if we want to call them that, means that a significant amount of the consticting force is directed inwards, rather then towards the meeting point of both ends, while at the same time the snake can't constrict itself any further as soon as the spikes bit in, at least not without breaking them. If it can't constrict itself any further, though, then the force ceases, and no progress is made, neither towards constricting nor forcing the spikes deeper into the enemy's flesh.

Hope it made more sense this time 'round.
>>
>>46159680
That is actually a very well thought out point. I think the "obvious" anon is referring to may be necromancy's tendency to just make things work.
>>
>>46159680
Your reasoning is relatively sound, but we're also discussing a few hundred small objects moving without any mechanical forces to make them do so in the first place. much less being held together by anything at all as a skeleton has no actual substance that connects it's individual parts. The forces of necromancy that hold the skeleton together can very well crated an insubstantial snake that would allow for friction and constriction without impeding the contact of bone to target.

Magic is not science, anon.
>>
I just want to throw out "Undead Bee Swarm" into the mix.
>>
>>46159843
>Magic is not science, anon.

I know.
But that doesn't mean that thinking about logic is useless.

I am trying to find possible problems, so that questions regarding their existence can be asked. If they do exist, one can think about solving them. If they don't, I wrote a post for naught.

Point being: I am not per se against the idea, I just want to point out /possible/ problems.
>>
>>46159988
I'd say Wasps. Or Hornets.

But that might be considered cruel enough to provoke the "zombie army" question.

In whichever variation, though, I think it's a good idea.

You decide to forgo training for now to help clean up New Hell. Nathan's assault left plenty of loose ends, including Natalia's surviving minions, the forges still working for the Chain-Holders, and Ordo the Orc. Plenty to do.

* * * *

You are Feathers the stuffed gryphon, and you tremble slightly in a shaky grip. The arms around you squeeze for all they're worth, and you do your best to comfort the crying person that's holding you.

She's older than the others! You're a little excited about that, actually. You don't remember much, but everyone's been around the same age, but this one's older, experienced.

It's bad that she's crying, though. You strain, trying to be more comforting. You feel something shift, and your plush changes subtly, becoming more squeezeable. The older woman hugs you more tightly. Success!

"I can't See," the woman whispers.

"Yeah," your Owner answers, her voice gentle but hard. It's comforting, in its own way. "You knew that going in. You'll have enough problems with just your past and present. You don't need the future hanging over you."

The woman lets go of you with one arm and reaches for a cup of water on the bedside table. You feel the stab of fear in her chest, the overwhelming hesitation, as she waits for something that doesn't come.

You comfort with all of your tiny pathetic might.

"You did everything with the Sight, didn't you?" your Owner asks, her voice full of soft sympathy. "Can you tell me what it was like?"

"Absolute certainty," the older woman whispers. "Every breath, every footfall, chosen from the perfect future. Every movement of my sword and body, everything. I can't See, I can't, I -"

The older woman shuts up in surprise when your Owner jams her hat down upon the older woman's head.

"The rest of us get by, Natalia. All the Sight in the world wouldn't have helped you if you hadn't also done the work. You trained, yes?"

"...Yes. Under some of the finest swordmasters I've ever known."
>>
>>46162088
"What about those designs you drew? Your hobbies, your schemes?" Your Owner puts her hand on the older woman's shoulder. "I don't mean to belittle your pain or your difficulties. How you live your whole life is going to have to change, but I think you know more, and can do more, than you believe you can."

"...How?" the older woman whispers, desperately.

You try to talk, but you don't have the knack of it yet. You can't seem to do the thing your Owner and the people like her do, where you make the air vibrate, so your desired cry of 'I believe in you!' stays entirely in your mind.

"Why don't you start with the water?" your Owner suggests, gently. "Take a deep breath."

The older woman breathes in and then, slowly, out. She reaches and grabs the cup firmly and, with great care, takes a drink.

She lets out a small, happy sob. Success!

Eventually, you are placed up on a shelf, and your Owner gives you a fond smile before leading the older woman out of the house. The door shuts behind them, leaving you in the comfortable quiet.

It's been a good day. You'll get the hang of things soon. Won't everyone be so surprised!

Don't contradict Silence in her own Mine.

Do engage with her. There are places she could go, but this is the closest place where she has family with a home. The next closest, of course, would be our home in the Basement, but as anon pointed out, we could stop closer, in the Atheneum.

"Fine," you tell Silence. "We'll get her out within the day."

"Take three," the fey tells you, softening somewhat. "I know she's difficult to move and probably unstable."

"Done."

Moving shop takes two of those three days. Natalia's grown more confident in doing things like walking and climbing stairs.

Gods, how fucked is it that you had to think that sentence about a sapient being?

The ride up the Shaft is long. Amy flew ahead to let the Caretaker, as well as Brigette and Victoria, know that you're coming.

The first thing you see at the top of the Shaft is Brigette, three sheets to the wind and clutching a half-full bottle of rum. She sways gently, but when her eyes find you they're full of checked rage.

"...Something up, Brigette?"

"Send them on ahead. There's rooms prepped," the redhead mutters. You look at your companions and nod; River, Amy, Nathan, Natalia, and your minions move out, heading towards the Caretaker's domain.

When the door closes behind them, Brigette takes a slug from her bottle. "Where do you get off, bringing that fucking filth into my home? Huh?"

not to mention the fact that from the sound of it Natalia has literally never made a choice in her life, it's not that she didn't make the right one it's that she did not even understand choice was a real thing. She's having problems /walking/. She's basically been the next best thing to lobotomized. I'd say that's close to enough.
>>
>>46172738
If I remember right, she didn't always have the Sight (or at least she wasn't always so dependent on it) but going to war and seeing everyone she knew die like she'd Seen them do despite her attempts to stop it kinda broke her and made her think everything HAD to go like her Sight said, so she came to rely on it more and more until she was using it for literally everything.
>>
>>46173554
People who've been suddenly struck blind tend to have difficulty walking and doing other shit as well; it's not a lobotomy so much as the very sudden loss of her most important sense, and she's having to learn to use the others to adjust.

You take a deep breath and count back from ten.

"Brigette," you say calmly. "You're drunk."

"I'm always drunk," the Poet snarls.

"More drunk than usual," you return, evenly. "You wanna tell me what you're actually angry about?"

"Fuck you Bri," Brigette slurs, but tears spring up in her eyes, hot and bright. "The things she's done to people, she deserves to -"

"To die?" you ask softly. "You mean like you did? Are you angry that she's alive, or that you watched her do those things and did nothing?"

Brigette throws the bottle against the ground with a wordless yell of rage. You watch as she sinks to her knees and sobs.

You brush the glass aside with your boot and kneel in the puddle of rum. You draw Brigette into a hug and let her cry.

"It's okay," you murmur softly, a heavy weight on your heart. "Tell me what's wrong."

"I helped. Gods, I helped. I helped all of them. I hurt Lora, I...I don't deserve to live. I should have died."

"Lora doesn't think that," you murmur softly. "She chose to spare you."

"You made her," Brigette accuses.

"No. I asked her, but I don't /make/ Lora do anything. And she chose to let Natalia live too," you continue. "She did that because she wants to believe that people are more than the mistakes that they make. That people can change for the better. Do you think she wants to believe that just out of the goodness of her heart?"

"...No," Brigette mutters, into your chest. "She wants to change too. To...to be more than what she is."

"She already is," you murmur. "Now she's just paying it forward."

"Brigette, I forgave you a long time ago. Can I ask you to give Natalia a chance?"

"I'll try," the Poet whispers. "I...I want Vic..."

Bri, for a down to earth necromancer, you're the closest thing to a living saint we've seen here. I fucking love it. It hurts, and it's hard, but you keep trying to be the best damn person you can. And it's really great to see people acknowledge that as part of the story.

Shine on you crazy fucking diamond.

"Yeah...Bri?"

"Yes, Brigette?"

"I think the angel's in love with me."

"Bring that up again when you're sober."

"Pretty much."

You can hear Nathan in the other room, talking to his mother; their voices are indistinct - not that you're trying to eavesdrop - but gentle. They've got a lot to talk about.

It's good that they have -

The door flies open, admitting a large orc in blackened plate armor. One of his tusks is capped in iron, and he takes in a deep breath when he sees you.

"WHERE IS THE BOOKCHILD?" the orc bellows.

> What do you do?
>>
>>46174957
WHICH ONE?!
>>
>>46174957
>WHICH ONE?!

I like this plan. It's entirely reasonable, forces him to think for a second, and gives us an opening. Plus, while he's doing that we can hit him with a stick.

But yeah, I was kind of expecting this. Hello repercussions!
>>
>>46174957

Nathan will probably burst into the room shortly anyway.
>>

Supporting, just for the sake of more sassy Bri.

>>

Eh whatever, it'll confuse him.
>>
>>46175070
Did she abandon it, or was she an orphan too?

>>
>>46175070

... Are all the orphans Bookchild? In which case, this line can still work.
>>
>>46175133
>Did she abandon it, or was she an orphan too?

Neither, she straight-up never had one. Many, perhaps even most, people don't have a surname. Some folks may have a clan name (dwarves especially) or a noble title (such as Henrietta) but generally speaking your family has to have done some shit, or done ONE THING for a SUPER LONG TIME, to acquire a last name, with the latter being much more common - leading to surnames like Miller, Marsh, and Smith.

When Nathan was given to the orphanage to raise, they gave him the surname Bookchild, as they do all of their children that do not otherwise have surnames.

Supporting this.

>>46177070
I'd reserve that for when she /actually/ introduces herself. This is all just snark and sass to throw him off guard. Also to buy time for Nate, Amy, or Fetch to stroll in, because Brianna is /not/ going to brawl with a goddamn beast of an orc in full plate.

Y'know, we're not even sure he's after Nathan for saving Natalia or killing the Bull or Gorger; he might want a look at Verve, or Soaring Song. Wraithsteel is a rare commodity, after all. It's any smith's dream come true.
>>
By the way, have we talked with any of the smiths or Caretaker about Requim? Y'know, the super awesome sword of Jackson la Croix made from fucking angel bones? Because I am hyped as /fuck/ to see that thing.

"What, my Hero?" you ask, dryly. "We're giving him some -"

"/Your/ Hero?" the orc asks, pointedly. "You are his chieftess?"

"...Yessss?"

"THEN MY BUSINESS IS WITH YOU, DARK NECROMANCER!"

You're mentally preparing to die in your chair when the orc sinks to one knee and gazes at you with his red eyes. You blink and stare, unsure of what to do from here.

"Your vassal has claimed my forge from the Traitor which took it from me. It is yours by right."

"...Why didn't you just move back in? The forces defending it are gone."

"LET NO MAN SAY THAT ORDO THE ORC DIED WITHOUT HONOR!" the plate-clad man bellows.

Nathan opens the door from the other room, crossbow in hand, and takes in the scene.

"...Naaate, this is Ordo," you introduce. "Ordo, this is Nathan Bookchild."

"Well met," Ordo greets, before his gaze goes back to you. "I will have my forge back, necromancer. Will you bargain with me for it, or must I declare battle between us?"

"...That depends on what you're offering," you tell him, leaning in.

"I know there are Forges that serve your enemies. Name one to me and I will cast them down, break their smiths, burn their plans and leave no man who can read or write in possession of his eyes and tongue! Great shall be their suffering and greater their woe!"

"...Maybe back that down some," you admit.

I was gonna ask him to prevent shipments to the lower level, but given what we know about this guy that is a bloody proposal. Lets not do that.

(Let's also not have ORDO! do negotiations, please.)
>>
>>46181534
Why not? He seems honorable enough. I have serious trouble imagining him causing any real problems, and I doubt we'd have to worry about him breaking his word or trying to trick his trading partners. He might be a bit more... enthusiastic than is entirely diplomatic, but I can't think of any situations where that's likely to be a serious problem in the Dungeon.

I don't remember what the details are of any of these but the Pit, so I'm gonna say

> The Pit

but I'd be happy to get a reminder of the rest...

As for reasoning...Ordo clearly /wants/ to do this as his way of feeling like his honour is satisfied in having his forge free and clear of debt. He'd probably be OK with the idea of making Darshan's commission, but...is he really the best person to be making it? Especially if we want it to be something that's hedged round with careful conditions to make sure Darshan can't use it except to help people, or whatever?

>>46183275
All we need to do to get around that is to have River present to explain the situation when he makes it. Fairly certain the master smith in a place called New Hell has dealt with demons before.

>>46186853
You've got your Double Coffee, I hope? I'd hate to hear that you suddenly collapsed into a pile of bones from withdrawal.

You consider the offer for a moment, then smile brightly.

"Actually, you've come at a time when you can solve something for us. My adopted sister needs something forged. Make it for her, and the debt is cleared."

You offer your hand out to shake. Ordo nods and grips it firmly - not a crushing shake, but the grip of a man whose idea of normal strength is does not relate to the human concept.

"It is good," Ordo agrees. "Where is this sister?"

<Fetch, can you get River? There's a large orc that wants to talk to her.>

<Yes, my queen.>

Since we obviously aren't bringing the bone boar into the Roost, will we be picking up some bats or crows? Also, what other kinds of flying things could we come to expect?

Also, we could turn a snake or two into couatls; flying feathered serpents with an affinity for water.
>>
>>46198105
I was avoiding crows because I figure they're TOO smart in the wrong ways. We don't need curious minions that could get themselves killed, just getting the rudimentary information and/or blinding foes is enough.
>>
>>46198468
We only get one smart minion, you know - Sir Fetch is a familiar, the others are relatively mindless.
>>
>>46198821
Well, they /do/ seem to pick up qualities of their own, or inherit bits from their previous lives. Kat takes a lot after the demon she was formed from, and our skelehands are pretty cool.

Our minions having a certain style and personality actually helps move us /away/ from zombie armies, since they're more individualistic. We still haven't seen our boar in action, so we can't say how he'll turn out.

Well, to be fair, he was only around for a day - tops. And he behaved /exactly/ how Brianna expected. Like a vicious little coward, even in death.

There's probably leftovers of instinctual behavior when raising animals into undeath, versus sentient beings. Most of our minds and spirits are bent towards 'higher thought', while animals remain pure (at least, in a sense).

This really is something to bring up with Vox when he arises from his crypt for his morning brew.
>>
>>46199200
>Most of our minds and spirits are bent towards 'higher thought'

HAHAHAHAHHAHA

Oh wait, you're serious. Let me laugh even harder.

BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

Okay, okay, sorry, that was perhaps a little mean. But seriously, speaking as someone who's job is studying the brain, this statement is both incredibly wrong, and remarkably typical of humanity's instinctual need to feel like we're special. Turns out, most of our minds are bent towards the same sort of instinctual behavior that every other animal relies on. The "higher thought" you refer to exists of course, but it has a massively inflated sense on its own importance. It doesn't control much. At the end of the day, we're creatures of instinct, anon. Capable of logic, and reasoning, and invention, but it's instinct that rules us.
>>
>>46199786
Intelligence isn't even linear like that, dolphins are more adaptable then us and elephants are probably smarter then us yet neither of them has taken over civilization, because its never been evolutionarily advantageous for them to do so.
>>
>>46199847
I would actually question both those statements, but I'm sure it's true that they're both smarter than us in certain ways. They just didn't develop true language, which is one of those advantages that seems kind of okay at first, but give it a few thousand years and it starts enabling progress at speeds evolution can only dream of.
>>
>>46199918
Wrong actually, dolphins are extremely complex with how they vocalize and elephants have a whole series of poorly studied vocalizations...which are unfortunately in infrasound and thus unhearable without electronic aid. There was an outpost in Africa studying that but they got used as a hunting lodge by some poachers a few years back and now elephants don't go there anymore.
>>
>>46199970
Complex vocalizations aren't the same thing as language. Nor, for that matter, is sign language on the level that some apes can learn it. In particular, no non-human animal has demonstrated the ability to reason through recursive embedded clauses, which is what allows language to express an infinite range of possible ideas. This may be the only thing special about humans, but as far as we can tell, it's what's special about humans.

Your initial idea for this war meeting had been you, Brigette, and Natalia. And then Brigette suggested Nathan, and then Nathan suggested River. Somehow the demon ended up getting invited and the Chosen - Catherine, right? - was suggested, and the upshot of the entire confusing affair is that you've got just about everyone you trust to give tactical advice on the Dungeon sitting around a large table in study not quite big enough for that table, holding cups of coffee and looking like they're trying to impress someone's parents for the first time.

"There are three Forges allied with the Chain-Bearers lower down," Natalia explains quietly. "The Pit is, I feel, of most immediate concern. It supplies the Cornucopia with ammunition, weapons, armor, tools, and sundry. It will have already sent down the last of the plating it was forging for the /Lonesome Dirge/."

"Which is?" you ask.

"An insurance policy, to keep the /Pallbearer/ loyal," Natalia explains. "A ship clad in iron, crewed by those loyal to the Master."

"That...how does it float?" Nathan asks.

"Shockingly well," Natalia drawls.

You clear your throat. "Hallow?"

"Forge Hallow supplies equipment and tools to forces loyal to the Debtor," Catherine speaks up. "They were also responsible for arming and equipping the Gauntlet Below and the Redoubt, though there hasn't been an order there for some time."

"What's the Debtor need?" Amy asks.

"Digging tools, lockpicks, files, sledgehammers, ladders..." Catherine shrugs. "I think he's a historian."

"Natalia?" you ask.

"The Debtor owes something he'd rather not owe and is looking to buy off his debt," the Traitor says with an odd look. "...He is driven by fear, not malice, but in that fear he has become something desperate and savage. Expect extreme resistance."

"Which leaves the Glass Foundry," you observe.
>>
>>46206645
"They did better business, once," Natalia admits. "They supply lenses, flasks, and glass of all kinds. Now their only remaining customer is the Diviner, and she scares them more than I ever did."

"What /is/ she?" you ask.

"She's the Diviner. Not the future, the present. She rules the Broken Jaw by dint of overwhelming knowledge and sympathetic sorcery."

You shiver. "That's fucking great. So they're not a threat?"

Natalia shrugs, softly. "Are frightened animals a threat?"

"Mom," Nathan snaps.

"How are they handling supply in the Roost?" you ask.

"They have access to the Broken Jaw open," Natalia explains. "The residents have learned not to cross into the Diviner's domain. Supplies are shipped down to the Broken Jaw, where they're loaded onto sleds and moved to the Roost. Technically they're distributed amongst the populace, but those in the Master's employ get the lion's share."

"...Sleds?" Amy asks.

Natalia nods. "The Broken Jaw is the first level that connects to the underworld around the Dungeon; in particular, it is distantly but firmly connected to tunnels that run north, beneath the great glaciers. The howling winds, along with properties unique to the Jaw, keep it frozen and blasted with snow and rime, forming fangs of ice in the great cavern that composes it. Hence the name."

"Tell me more about the Chain-Bearers in the next few levels," you ask, solemnly. "This seems relevant."

Natalia takes a deep breath and looks down at her coffee.

"...Natalia?" you ask.

"It's not easy to talk about," Brigette explains. "It's one thing to make her gambit when she could see the consequences of her betrayal. It's another to say it now, when she can't. Almost like she never learned courage or -"

"/Brigette/," Victoria reprimands, harshly.

"...Sorry," the Poet mutters, taking a drink of her coffee.

"I'm not a coward," Natalia mutters bitterly. "It's hard to know where to begin, heritor."

"Brianna," you correct.

"The Lush is a hedonist and a sadist. He delights in his power over those beneath him and indulges in all manner of gluttony and vice, but much like Brigette he sobers himself when he is preparing for battle. Your conflict with him may be somewhat complicated by his nature."

"His nature?" Amy asks, blinking.

"He's a giant."

"Fuck me," River groans, putting her head on the table.

"The Debtor is mortal. Mostly," Natalia corrects. "He is difficult to kill, but his time is running out. He will be scared, desperate, and searching for his goal with great urgency."

"What happens if he finds it?" you ask quietly.

"He seems to believe he will be immortal," Natalia informs you. "I am not certain that I agree."

"...The Diviner?" you ask.

"Have you ever seen a child drown a kitten so that she had something to bury?" Brigette asks, her voice low and hard. "Have you ever met someone who pulls the wings from flies to watch them suffer? The Diviner is cruel and cold. She kills without question and obsesses over knowledge. She's trying to become present-omniscient, to know all that /is/, so that she can rule this world when the Master is done with his great plan."

"Do I want to know?" you ask softly, clutching your cup.

"If we knew, we'd tell you," Brigette says softly. "All I've heard from him is that when he's done, we can do whatever we want with what's left of this world. That's...that's when I started working on trying to stop them. On mastering the Tongue."

You take a deep breath.

Does he want to become the /only/ God? I mean, if Lora's power is nearly absolute, and is only rivaled by the divine, then he would literally be able to unmake the world and remake it however he sees fit.

No /normal/ human should know anything about this shit, let alone be able to perpetrate a mostly successful plot to that end. Who else thinks that the Master is a whole lot more than just a scheming dick?

Welp, I can't really wait much longer. I'm gonna go get some Ramen and eat it, and the vote will be called thereafter.

Short interlude. May intersperse Rule the Roost with interlude-y stuff with side characters.

I suggest you begin thinking on if you want to bring someone besides just Bri/Nate/Amy. This environment will not be good for Fetch; bringing him or the other chicken is not advisable.
>>
>>46216250
So who all can we reasonably recruit? Lamia lady, maybe? She had a crossbow. Crossbows sound useful in the Roost.
>>
>>46216603
Essentially, the list from Part V stands, plus Catherine. However, it should be noted that the environment is full of both tunnels and sheer drops. Scribbles would have a bad time since falling is a major life hazard for her.
>>
>>46216699
How is falling a bigger hazard for her than humans?
>>
>>46216748
Lamias aren't strong climbers, unlike snakes, and she lacks the upper body strength to pull herself over a ledge or even really stop herself if she starts slipping or gets thrown.

The Roost is full of harpies and long drops. Getting thrown is likely a "when", not an "if".
>>
>>46216250
What about Diving Shadow? I know she would prefer to stay in the Mine with Lawrence, but she's bound to have a few old feathered-friends.

There's also River, with Darshan. I think /who/ is in our party will likely count less than how we handle introductions and negotiations. First impressions and all.

Can we send Catherine up to check on the Rose cultists in the lichyard? They do share faith.

You nurse your coffee cup for a long minute while you think. But, really, there's only one decision to be made.

"We need to open the Roost up," you decide. "We'll enter from New Hell so we don't get hit by a flood of harpies trying to escape, and then we'll see what we can do to get things there...normalized. After that, we open it up from the Mine so that people who want to leave, can."

"What about New Hell?" Nathan asks.

"Depends on who's left behind to help out," you admit. "We'll have to chat it over."

"Might as well start now," Amy admits, her feathers rustling.

>Dick is not a normal human

Kinda figured that out awhile ago. His actual status is up in the air, but I assume he's either trying for ragnarok or to kill the gods at this point.

Given how things have been going, he could be a Reforged remnant of that one being that got hit with the Killing Spear.

Also, Pallbearer is being kept in check by an ironclad. That's very interesting. Most of the other Chain Bearers just got hit with the charisma ball to keep their service up. Or in the case of Nat, were half insane.

I wonder how that boat got wrapped up in this given Silence's opinion of it?

You manage to catch Brigette on her way to the stash where she keeps her liquor. The Poet sputters half-formed protests when you drag her away, reaching for the door with exaggerated sorrow.

"You get quality time," you announce, trying not to chuckle.

"I'm innocent! Innocent!" Brigette protests. "I've done nothing to deserve this!"

"She said, shortly before she got the rundown of what she did to deserve this."

"...Fuck me."

"You tried that already," you note, opening the door to a small study. Brigette gives you a guilty look, the mirth gone from her expression.

"Brianna, I've been meaning to talk to you about that," the Poet admits, softly. "I already talked to Victoria. She...she understands."

"I'd sort of figured you were trying to manipulate me," you tell her, equally quiet. "Which, considering your position, I'd forgiven awhile ago."

"...Yes, that was part of it," Brigette agrees. "But if we're being honest? I was scared. I wanted comfort, and I'd just sent Victoria away. I doubt attempting to catch you by the glands would have worked, but I could have pretended."

Silently, you take Feathers out from his place in your backpack - you wear it more often than you don't, these days - and press him into Brigette's arms. The redhead hugs the toy close and takes a seat at the table you've gotten ready. There's a pot of coffee, a bowl of sugar, two cups, and spoons.

You take your own seat and pour yourself a cup. "What is it you're looking for me to say, Brigette?"

"...I'm not sure," she admits, looking down at her empty cup.

"Then I'll say what I'm here to say. We're entrusting you with Natalia."

Those bright eyes look at you in shocked confusion. "Why in Hell would you do that?"

"We don't have anyone else. The Caretaker will do as he can but he's busy with his rescued staff and in any event, sanity or no sanity, he's a lich. He won't understand her difficulties. You have Victoria to help you and the resources of the Atheneum at your disposal, and you can ask Lora for advice if you need to," you explain patiently. "Fetch'll stay on deck too."

"She knows I hate her. /You/ know I hate her," Brigette protests.

"The two of you have history that connects you. She knows you might understand." You sigh and take a drink of your coffee. "It's time to pay it forward, Brigette. To pass on the mercy you were shown."

The Poet squeezes the stuffed animal in her arms. "I -" she hesitates, and then straightens her back, her voice getting firm. "I won't let you down, Brianna."

>>
>>46217639
That'd be interesting, but I would have thought that if he was part of a god slain by that fucking spear, /he/ would have been the one tearing apart the Lichyard to find (and probably destroy) it.
As for the Pallbearer, maybe its a ghost ship? Animated by the death's of the soldiers and sailors it once carried, and literally bound to the Sunless Sea? If it's a reluctant partner, a little like Bridgette, then it might be carrying precious cargo (Requiem maybe?) or protecting something important enough that the price of the Master's plans are an acceptable cost. Silence's sort-of friendship makes me think that it might also have ties to the Mistlands. Maybe the Pallbearer is the one who brought Silence to the Dungeon in the first place.

>>46223312

You worry me sometimes Vox. Seriously. Get outta work and go straight to bed; the quest will still be here when you wake.

Certainly, fair anon.
>The Vintner - Former bully and torturer of the Basement; now Lora's bitch. Currently bound as a weeping specter to her sword.
>The Money-Changer - Lisa the Seeker, that stinking cunt who tortured and raised innocents into undeath /just/ to make a mint. Crushed under the weight of all the dosh she stole from the dead, and now also bound to Lora's sword.
>The Poet - Poor, alcoholic Bridgette (Seriously, we're going to have to make her go cold turkey at some point). Formerly controlled the Atheneum in the hopes of unlocking the secrets of divine language so she could unfuck the Dungeon. Spared by Lora (who also seemed to have a crush for the ginger lass), and now a close ally.
>The Baron - The dipshit who, for /some/ fucking reason, swore undying loyalty to the Master. Took over the Mine and enslaved the men and women who called it home. Ate his gun, and currently inhabiting Lora's sword.
>The Traitor - Natalia, obviously. She /was/ controlling New Hell, but it also seems that some of the Chain-Bearers from lower levels had their hooks in some of the forges as well. Soon to be remedied.
>The Lush - A giant (literally) hedonist, sadist, and rapist. Also apparently quite cunning and deadly when not drunk or high as fuck. We are going to kill his big ass slowly. Then he's going to be Lora's bitch for eternity.
>>
>>46223604
>>46225325
I have to recheck the previous threads to see what order the next levels go in, but these were the other Chain-Bearers. I'm sure Vox or an anon will correct me if I'm wrong.
>The Pallbearer - Some kind of sentient warship ruling the Sunless Sea. Speculation also suggests that it is also our next redeemable Chain-Bearer.
>The Diviner - A cold, cruel, unfeeling, and terrifying psychopath. Unlike Natalia, who could see the /future/, the Diviner can see what /is/, and looking to make herself present-omniscient. Currently controlling the huge icebox known as the Broken Jaw.
>The Debtor - Apparently a neckbeard who made a deal for something he doesn't want to lose. Currently in control of the Warehouse (I think?). /Might/ be redeemable, but we don't know enough about him or what he's looking for to know more.
>The Wyrm - That's right, one of the Chain-Holders is a fucking dragon. No other clues about what it wants or where it's holed up.
>The Librarian - No info on this one yet, though it's surprising that they weren't controlling the Atheneum instead of Bridgette.
>The Daughter - All we have to go on is the title of the Chain-Holder, and Vox's word that she isn't the Master's spawn.
>The Master - Master manipulator, enslaver of angels, and one great big Dick.
>>
>>46225349
>>The Daughter - All we have to go on is the title of the Chain-Holder, and Vox's word that she isn't the Master's spawn.

>>
>>46225456
If she is, she'd better damn well have a daughter of her own named Susan.
>>
>>46225456
That'd be a bit difficult anon. Lora admitted to lacking experience in socializing with humans, and her first experience with love was her crush on Bridgette.

Now, her being Henrietta's half-sister I can get behind. Being denied your birthright and never being able to see your own family? That's the perfect start for an aspiring villain.

"Okay, give me my gryphon back now," you ask. "He needs to go with me tomorrow when we're heading into the Roost."

Brigette hands Feathers back to you and finally pours herself a cup of coffee. "You know, one of those thoughts I have when I'm all depressed and drunk is wondering why you bother to spend so much time on me."

"Brige -"

"I wasn't done," she interrupts, softly. "I know the answer to that, and that it's just the booze talking. But I do think, maybe I should be doing more. Maybe I can help more. Lora's teaching me more of the Tongue but that and practice doesn't take up all of my day..."

"You could cut into your drinking time," you say flatly.

"...I could stand to get laid less often." Brigette's guilty smile doesn't quite show teeth. She sighs when your answer is a steady glare.

"I know," she murmurs. "Gods, you weren't kidding about quality time sucking."

"No good deed goes unpunished, Brigette," you tell her. "...But tell you what. When we're done with the Roost, we'll do some actual quality time. Friend stuff, y'know? Play some chess, swap some stories."

"Victoria kinda wants to host a dinner," Brigette suggests.

"Deal," you tell her, offering your hand out. The Poet shakes it firmly, with a much brighter smile than before.

"Speaking of helping, how can I help with New Hell?" she asks.

"Understanding that you'd have to stay sober?"

"Understanding that staying sober means you have to talk to me about the angel eventually?" she answers, evenly.

"...Provide the strike team with some emergency books, and get in touch with Silence. Talk to the Caretaker too, and be prepared to ferry advice from Natalia."

"Are you that desperate for help?" Brigette asks.

"Nah," you answer, with a wry grin. "Why start avoiding difficult jobs now? People might think I'm ill or something."

BEGIN SUBLEVEL: RULE THE ROOST

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzRk5EIHAoI

"Understand that old friendships may have changed," Diving Shadow warns. "People may have died. Alliances may have shifted. And I mislike the Dungeon's new taste for enslavement."

"You're not the only one," Amy murmurs, rubbing absently at her wrists. You and Nathan each squeeze one of her hands; the four of you have eyes for the wall separating New Hell from the Roost, which is even now being chipped at by industrious workers employed by Ordo the Orc.

"We'll want to make contact with the dwarves on the other side of this hole first," Diving Shadow advises. "Both so we have a way out and so they know we're not hostile invaders."

"What if there's no dwarves?" you ask.

"Then we're all in deep shit."

The workers step back, presenting a passage in the steel and debris just wide enough to squeeze through single-file. You hold your hat over your head and swear the incantation needed for your ghost sight. You see Nathan's shadow enlongate and step confidently into the tunnel ahead of him. You follow, with Amy and Diving Shadow behind.

It's time to liberate the Roost.
>>
>>46237632
You emerge into a dimly lit room that smells faintly of waste. A small, uncovered oubliette in the center of the room seems to be the source.

Your contemplations are cut off by the sound of rustling steel. Your eyes snap to the source, and you find two elves in tattered rags, with heavy collars around their necks that connect to rings in the walls by steel chains.

There are brands in their cheeks, depicting a spear crossed with a wine bottle, and their left ears have been clipped.

"Elves," Nathan murmurs.

"Slaves," you correct.

Somebody is taking notes from Dragon Age! But yeah, seems some of the other races don't care too much for elves. Any particular reasons, other than jealousy over their longevity, or just plain old racism?
>Break them loose and tell them to flee threw the tunnel. When they get to the end, ask for Lark or River. They'll help them.

Seeing another elf will be a relief for them. Is Sir Fetch still with River? He can get her to meet the freed slaves halfway.
>>
>>46237855
As hinted at (though admittedly not explicitly stated), elves are supposed to be relatively rare in the Dungeon. Traditionally elven lands are not near Starfall and elven justice considers exile underground to be pointlessly cruel.

You and the slaves stare at one another for a long moment.

"I don't trust it," you murmur. You raise your voice some, so the prisoners can hear you. "Hold very still. I'm going to check something, and I need you to not make any noise."

The elves - one male, one female - nod. They're frightened, but you can see the hope in their eyes. Slowly, you draw out the stone with a hole in it and murmur a brief incantation to sharpen your sense of death. The pain in the room is omnipresent enough that you're not getting it on your -

"Those cheeky fucks," you swear. You point at the elves. "Illusions, attached to open collars. Probably a trap. The actual slaves are on the other side of the room, invisible."

Nathan looks around the room and spots what he's looking for - a little crystal, embedded in the ceiling. One crossbow bolt shatters it, making the illusions covering the room flicker and fade.

There's more than a dozen slaves in here, only two of whom are elves, all branded with the crossed bottle and spear.

"You have to go," one of them pleads. "Before they notice!"

"Who?" Diving Shadow asks.

"...The Smokers," the slave whispers.

Vox, I thought you were on the edge of passing out/succumbing to migraines/otherwise about to fall apart. I truly hope you're not forcing yourself to write at the FURTHER expense of your body.

You've already given us a tooth, we can ask no more.

Also since we had a tie between 'free them' and 'talk' I'm sorta splitting the difference.
