“How'd you get burned, anyway?”

You look down at the young man who's carefully re-wrapping your arms loosely with gauze, the fresh coat of antiseptic ointment still cool on your skin. You fix the poor orderly with a cold, flat stare.

“I hugged the flaming ghost-corpse of my dead Executive Officer in a nightmare.”

The young man pauses mid-wrapping, his face splitting into a grin. “Duuude, SPOOKY!” His tone rings with frank approval.

Despite everything, you can't help but laugh. “Yeah, I suppose so.”

The nurse finishes wrapping your arms. “Okay, move about.” You oblige. “Yeah, that should stay for today.” He tidies up as you shrug your khaki shirt back on, relieved to find your shirtsleeves are no longer rubbing your tender, reddened skin too much. “Your chart says you're on Vicodin. You take that yet today?”

You nod - after spending the night duct-taped to a folding table in the CIC, you were in no shape to forgo them. “I'll get used to it in a few days, I guess.”

“Should clear up in a week,” the nurse assures you. He claps you on the shoulder, and hustles off - you've no doubt he's got his hands full. The C-5 that returned your girls from Java also bore some of the worst-injured men from the second battle of Sunda Strait; some were sent directly to the best hospitals in Japan via helicopter airlift, and some ended up here. Your sleep - if you could call it that - came late, after an hour or so of sniggering, snarling and muttered maledictions as Goto wrapped up the battle in your stead, managing the retreat.

After waking up and hoarsely demanding that someone cut you loose from the goddamn table, you'd had just enough time to hit your apartment for painkillers, a bananna and a fresh outfit before racing to Yokota to meet the incoming C-5. Stretcher after stretcher had been borne out first, quiet, sedated men swaddled in gauze being rushed to waiting choppers. Then had come your warriors, quiet and withdrawn, and lastly, lurking in the shadowed back of the cavernous aircraft, huddled over her silent charge...

Naka.

Your phone buzzes insistently. Slipping it from your pocket, you see Goto's name flashing at the top of the screen, followed by his missive -

“HELP.”

You contemplate that thoughtfully, then type out an interrogative.

“Kongou or Essex?”

Bzzzzz. “YES.”

You chuckle despite yourself.

More the muzzle blast.

Plus, you're taking a ship that's loaded to the gills with very explosive av-gas and av-ordy and making it sail around where it'll get shot at.

This kills the ship.

More like there was no practical arc of fire; the gun couldn't elevate usefully and supports and structure got in the way.

When the Lexingtons tried having 8" turrets on top of the flight deck, blast effects from firing anywhere near the direction of the deck proved... unpleasant.
>>
You know, guys. Damage like this might take the chunniboat sisters a while to repair. And their obsolete as hell. Of all the ships here, only the Kongous are of equal vintage, but the IJN apparently didn't consider cruisers to be as "sexy" as battleships, so the Kongous got the upgrades while Tenryuu and Tatsuya were left to fall behind more and more.

But the two of them are going to be in dock for quite a while, with damage this bad. Time enough to experiment.

Can we give a pair of obsolete kanmusu cruisers the modernizations that history denied their steel hull existences?
>>
>>46208320
Actually, turbulence from the gasses emitted by the gun when it goes off. Makes it very miserable to land or take off. It was pretty much established that if you want to seriously do airpower at sea and have gunpower as well, you needed specialized ships for it, you couldn't just slap a flight deck onto a ship with big guns.

That's not what I'm talking about. We've had this shitfight before.

Large guns firing while aircraft operations are taking place produces fuckloads of turbulence from all the blast gases in the air. It's why the 8" battery got swapped for 5" DPs, in addition to the AA increase.
>>

The Phalanx isn't that good for a sustained air assault. Shots it self empty in the first minute then it's down anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to reload.
>>
>>46208602

>[X] GOTO CALLS FOR AID, AND RADM. WILL ANSWER

First, tell Naka that we're proud of her and that she's still on our side, no matter what she looks like now.
When we get to Goto we should reign Kongou and Essex in by whatever means necessary, then hightail it to the Chuunibotes.

When we get to THEM, we inform them that Yuudaichi managed to manifest her full-sized hull, and that when they do the same they're in for some serious upgrades.
>>
>>46208542

What the fuck hapened to poor Iowa's boobs?
>>
>>46208586
Well, we could also add a smallish scouting drone launch and retrieval system to them as well, to add to their observation options.
>>
>>46208602
Doesn't need to be phalanx. Could just give them Bofors 40mms.
>>
>>46208656
Give them the 76mm guns with proximity fuses.
>>
If we're investigating refits to the chuunis, and AA is the only real option, I think it's worth considering twin 20mm Oerlikons and the 3"/50 single and double mount.

Easily done on WW2 ships, and superior to any other WW2 AA.
>>
>>46208647

>>

>From 1935-1936, plans were considered to convert the class into a dedicated anti-aircraft / anti-submarine platforms, using eight 127 mm guns in dual turrets, eight 25-mm guns, and four depth charge launchers with 36 depth charges. The redesign would also have involved combining the smokestacks into a single stack. Funding was approved for fiscal 1937, but the plan was cancelled due to an overload in the capacity of Japanese shipyards. The plan was floated again in 1938-1939 using eight 76.3 mm guns, but eventually abandoned in favor of the Akizuki-class destroyers.

Heck, considering Tatsuta's boilers are somewhere in pieces at the bottom of Sunda Straits and her whole engine room is open to daylight, might be doable to drop some diesels in there. (Those are most likely too large.)
>>
>>46208679
Eh, might be difficult. I think the 3" guns would make the whole top heavy issue worse
>>
>>46208684

Bullshit. That's just unnatural.

Also, for the Chuuniboats, don't forget:

'MURICA RADAR STRONK!
>>
The reason why you can't just put a flight deck on top of big gun turrets is because the turrets would have no arc of fire, couldn't elevate, and they would get in the way of the superstructure (aka, the flight deck)...plus, you know, you'd have no room for a hangar.

Also, if your fleet carrier is in a situation where it actually has any use for big guns, you're doing it wrong. Carriers are long-range weapon platforms, with the speed to outrun basically everything. It's far more efficient to have a heavy cruiser or fast battleship as an escort and dedicate a fleet carrier's design entirely to carrier operations. Not having big guns also means you can design a ship that doesn't need the heavy, sturdy hull to withstand the massive recoil of the guns, which means you can make the ship faster and carry more planes.
>>
>>46208707
Except the Type96 does nothing the entire time.

And I think you're vastly underestimating the Phalanx's capabilities given that it's last real combat stuffup was nearly 30 years ago and has since had a lot of incremental upgrades in FCS and ammo management.

I mean, you could put in a SeaRAM instead, I guess..

The thing is, you probably WON'T be launching aircraft when the guns are firing. The Guns were there because CV's were seen initially as being able to operate alone, and needed a way to defend themselves should an enemy cruiser ambush them during the night/in poor weather.

The guns are there for times when you can't/aren't launching planes.

The 8" guns were removed because we realized that CV's wouldn't be operating alone, and that the escorts with them could handle any surface aggressors. Not to mention that the 5"/38 was not widely available when the Lexington's were built. Just the 5"/25, which was entirely inadequate for even a carriers self-defense purposes.

The 5"/38's were put in when they became available and it was clear that planes were a larger threat than ships.
>>

Replace the main battery with them and it's fine.

US AP probably means they're still better guns than the 14cm/50s

And you understating the 23s since they did actually shot stuff down in the war.

And the few times the Phalanx has had a chance to shot things in actual combat, it fails to deliver.

My theory is that since the navy doesn't thing that things can turn they don't think to test them against a target that is jinxing all over the sky. If the target coming straight it wil, maybe, kill it. If the target is flying like Young from SWQ, good luck.

Plus they only shot at things coming towards the ship that they computer say will hit the ship. You can see the problem.

Tatsuta would need a full iron lung, and even then its iffy as to her survival.

If the bridge corresponds to a shipgirl's head, then the boilers would likely be the heart. Tatsuta's boilers are outright GONE, her engineering compartments reduced to a gaping hole. I shudder to think what that translates to in human body damage.

Tenryuu might be better off, though not by much.

First, there's no such thing as this 23/26 you keep talking about. It's a Type 96 25mm gun. Get your shit right if you're going to argue.

Second, the Type 96s shot down shit during the war because there was an actual goddamn war on, not police actions or curbstomps against technologically primitive opponents. It's had like one chance to do anything at all in practice.

Also your theory is shit and displays base ignorance of how the Phalanx actually goddamn works, as well as the fact that it's been extensively upgraded over it's service life.

You, sir, are a flaming idiot.

>>
>>46208722
The 3"/50s were meant to replace a Bofors twin mount. Granted, they weighed twice as much, but they were four times as effective and had much greater range. There were also twin-3"/50 mounts to replace quad-Bofors mounts. So, it's conceivable that you could replace one of the chuuniboat's 6" guns with a twin-3"/50 mount, then mount another single-gun 3"/50 (or some Bofors 40mm, if need be) with the extra weight left over. Also, radar.

As for being top-heavy, well, I imagine replacing the engines or boilers with something more modern might help. Stick some modern power generators and damage control equipment in there. But are you sure Tenryu and Tatsuta were actually top-heavy?

After a moment's contemplation you type your reply.

“After the tragedy, they send in the clowns.” You tap 'send' and lurch out of your chair to pay your wounded warriors a visit. Your phone keeps buzzing busily in your pocket as you drag yourself down the hall to the monitoring desk. Two nurses are busily chatting about something.

“So I walk in and he's hiding under the sheets,” a short-haired brunette in scrubs is relaying to a tired-looking chap grimacing at his Styrofoam cup of cold coffee. “Like I can't see who's name is on the chart. So-” they turn as they sense your approach, clamming up quickly. “Hey, Admiral. Can we help you?”

“I was looking for Tenryuu and Tatsuta,” you ask. “I know they got hurt pretty bad-”

The woman raises a hand to cut you off. “Admiral... it's pretty bad.”

You nod. “I know.”

“With all due respect... I'm not sure you do, sir.”

“I spent six weeks in the same ICU as most of the wounded from Higgins,” you point out quietly. “Those two were my responsibility. I can't... do that to them, and then just walk away from the consequences.”

She nods sadly, as if she'd been expecting that answer. “Downstairs in intensive care. Room 221.”

You thank them and trudge to the elevator - your injured thigh is always stiff in the morning, till you can get the blood flowing and limber up the injured muscle a bit. Between the cranky bone-deep ache and the scent of antiseptic in the air, the memories of your own long hospital stay are coming back. Long hours of staring at the ceiling, too well drugged to find much interest in the TV or even focus your eyes on a book for too long. Long weeks with nothing to do but relive the final hours of USS Higgins. Days of searching your scattered and drug-confused mind for the missing memories; the last breaths took by your XO, the man who really won the battle - your right arm for so many years. And endless nightmares manufactured by your mind to fill in the gap; exploring every ghastly fate he could have, *must* have met.

In the privacy of the elevator, there's no need to hold back a shiver.

You don't much like hospitals.

Nobody does.

The second floor is hushed; quiet and tired-looking nurses making their rounds with hardly a glance in your direction. You find the room and gently open the door to a darkened room.

A familiar subdued whirr-hiss spreads queasiness through your gut like an oil slick, black and poisonous. Tatsuta lies silently on the bed, the bare skin over her upper-right chest wrinkled by a layer of glued-on plastic, forming a seal around a plastic tube that seems embedded in her body.

Hate is sitting with his back to the drawn curtains, at the end of a couch built as a window-seat. Tenryuu is lying sprawled over the rest, her head resting in Hate's lap. You glance over her injuries - she seems half made of white gauze, now; even her face and eyes are completely hidden from view. One arm is in a sling, and her opposite leg is in splints.

“She wouldn't take a cane,” Hate says quietly. He's staring at Tatsuta quietly, stroking Tenryuu's hair absentmindedly - she seems to be asleep. “Didn't want to admit it, I guess.” He lifts his eyes to meet your gaze, and for a second your heart almost stops - his dilated pupils are as straight and deep as gun barrels.

“The cruisers that did this,” Hate says quietly. “You know who they were, don't you?”

What part of the idea becoming obsolete in the late 1930's because of advances in aviation do you not understand.

When these ships were built in 1929, they were envisioned as going off on their own with at most a few destroyers as cover. In the imagined role, they would have a very real chance of engaging enemy cruiser/scouting forces in conditions that were not ideal for launching planes, and would therefor be forced to take them under gunfire. When these ships were built, that idea made perfect sense, and was accepted by every major nation with a Naval Aviation Corps.

>>46209211
5" guns are actually not ideal for engaging destroyers when mounted on a capital ship. The shell is simply too small and the range too short to prevent an attack. Even 6" guns have difficulty stopping a single destroyer.

Not to mention that the AA guns available at the time were single purpose 5"/25's or 3"/50's. Neither of which possess the capability of stopping even a light ship in a reasonable amount of time.

>Thing is, it just makes more sense to have some destroyers and/or cruisers to escort your carrier

That was not the thinking at the time. Hindsight is 20/20, but naval strategy then called for CV's to operate independent from the main fleet.

>and devote the space/weight saved on the carrier to more hangar space, speed, or armor.

Even with the eight 8" guns, the Lexington's had the largest hangar of any CV for 15 years, the best torpedo defense system available, and courtesy of its advanced turbo-electric drives, went faster than nearly every other CV in commission even by the end of WW2 20 years later. And it had a 7" belt to boot.

Space on them was never an issue.

>I work on the army version that is the same Exact thing but on a trailer.

C-RAM systems, eh? Neat. To the other anon, the guy isn't saying that CIWS sucks - it's just that CIWS systems have always, always, ALWAYS been a last-ditch kind of thing. To be blunt, terminal intercept is fucking hard. Terminal intercept against a weapon likely programmed to perform a last-second z-shaped or pop-up terminal evasive maneuver? Even harder. I picked this filename for a reason - Phalanx guns were always the last-ditch, hail-mary system; one last chance to engage a leaker that the primary defenses and extensive decoys and ECM couldn't thwart.

Point-defense guns can be made better than the Phalanx, but that primarily relies on making the gun bigger - which is why the Goalkeeper and the Russian AK-whateverthenumberis system are 30mm. The main reason is, a higher muzzle velocity results in a longer engagement range, and thus a longer engagement *window.* Goalkeeper uses the GAU-8 for that exact reason. But note that the GAU-8 is a massive gun that eats up a lot of weight and deck space; which illustrates why the Phalanx has never been upsized - it'd detract from more effective defensive systems, like longer-ranged missiles. The go-to replacement these days is the Rolling Airframe Missile; which has the primary benefit of - again - having a much longer range than gun-based defenses.

A 5" shell is simply not large enough to stop a modern 1930's era destroyer in a reasonable amount of time, and that includes the heavy broadside of radar-controlled 5"/38's mounted on modern USN Fast Battleships.

>standard anti-destroyer caliber mounted as secondaries on most battleships

Most nations actually went with a 5.5" or 6" gun when it came to secondary armament on capital ships. Including Germany, England, Japan and Italy.

>including US battleships, well before dual-angle guns were introduced

You really need to look at the time frames for this as well. When US Dreadnoughts were using 5" secondaries in the 1910's, most destroyers weighed less than 1,000 tons, had torpedoes with ranges less than 7 kilometers, and went less than 30 knots. A 5" gun was considered just BARELY adequate then. 5.5" guns were still pushing it, but the IJN decided to use them because 6" shells were simply too heavy for the average Japanese man to handle for any period of time.

Also factor in the ridiculous weight limitations created by Congress for Battleships. The USN knew that 5" guns were barely cutting it, but anything larger would be heavier, and thus would impact some other aspect of the ship. As soon as Congress loosened its noose a bit during the 20's, the Navy was full and ready to switch to the new, much more potent 6"/53 gun for its brand new Lexington's and South Dakota class ships. Then the WNT happened and ended all that.

By the time we were building new battleships, the focus had changed from anti-destroyer to anti-everything, with a larger focus on the anti-aircraft part. the British went through the same ordeal with their 4.7" guns, and Japan and Germany never made the leap really.

At least as far as anti-air goes, the Japanese were moving towards better DP guns. The Akizuki's 10cm guns were incredibly potent AA weapons. The Japanese just never had time to keep working on it.

Also as far as the Japanese 23mm AA guns go, they aren't quite as bad as people here are claiming. Most of the problems with them stem from their low rate of fire due to their usage of clips. They get most of their bad rep due to being compared to the bofors. Well no shit they were bad in comparison, the bofors is in a different weight class. The closest analogue to the 23mm for the US would be the 20mm Oerlikon guns on their ships.

First

IT WAS A 25MM GUN YOU NIGNOG.

Aside that, the 25mm had a lot of flaws beyond simple RoF. All mounts had a shocking traverse rate, whether due to a poor mechanism on the twin and triples or being too damn bulky on the singles.
It also had excessive muzzle blast and a stupid amount of vibration, rendering any sort of burst or sustained fire horribly inaccurate.

Finally, it was a maintenance whore.

RoF was only one of many problems with the Type 96.

...yeah, right. Those same "simply not large enough to stop a 1930's era destroyer" 5" guns also wrecked Japanese destroyers when they hit (not surprising, given that destroyers lack armor). Oh, and 5" shells were apparently big enough to trash the superstructure of a goddamn battleship, as well as savage even heavy cruisers badly enough to make them withdraw.

Destroyers are unarmored ships; 5" shells work just fine against them. That was true in 1930, and it was true in 1940.

>At least as far as anti-air goes, the Japanese were moving towards better DP guns. The Akizuki's 10cm guns were incredibly potent AA weapons. The Japanese just never had time to keep working on it.

True, but those were no longer true DP guns. They were in the realm of dedicated AA gun that might be able to sort of shoot at an enemy ship if it has too. A 4" gun is really not okay at all for anti-ship operations in the 1940's.

>They get most of their bad rep due to being compared to the bofors. Well no shit they were bad in comparison, the bofors is in a different weight class. The closest analogue to the 23mm for the US would be the 20mm Oerlikon guns on their ships.

Compare it to the American 28mm (1.1") guns developed and fielded at the same time. The American gun fires a heavier shell at a higher velocity to a longer ranger with a similar cyclic rate of fire. Its more reliable and can engage targets quicker than the 25mm mounts, but was still considered bad by the USN simply because it was difficult to maintain compared to other guns.

The "worst" auto-canon fielded by the USN in 1941 is still better than the best IJN one available at the same time.

Also, I don't think that ever happened. Or was ever a flaw in the programming. It'd be such an obvious fucking contingency to cover, from a programming standpoint, not to mention a simple one. Realistically speaking, no two inbounds are going to be EXACTLY the same distance away from you, and even if there ARE, you just program it to choose one at random and engage it first.

The biggest flaw of the CIWS system was that it had to be taken off of stand-by mode by humans--in other words, human error.

You think for a moment, remembering how the two cruisers had faced the wounded FFGs, so battered, so shattered, and still struggling to fight their ships right up until the end. How they'd paused, almost as if contemplating - then saluted three times with half powder charges before turning to leave. You remember the man in the vision pointing the revolver at you, and... hesitating.

The way he smiled as he saw the missiles raining down upon him.

“Yeah,” you say quietly. “There's only one squadron I can really think of.”

“Scharnhorst,” Hate says quietly. “And Gniesenau.”

You suck in a surprised breath - Hate tends to take the view that anything floating is a boat, and that's that. “How did-”

Hate holds up his smartphone and wiggles it. “So why'd you guess?”

You lean against the wall, collecting your thoughts. “I wasn't sure - I'd have to look up the armaments, and all that-”

“Skipper,” Hate growls. “TALK.”

You sigh. “The German East Asia squadron crushed a fleet of obsolete CLs just like these two weeks before the exact same thing was done to them.” You shrug. “I saw... when they-” you shudder involuntarily, spitting out the words before they can form on your tongue, slimy and cold. “I saw a man... pointing a gun at me. Begged him to fire. Dared him to. When the frigates opened up, he... he smiled.” You swallow. “They got jobbed. They're looking for a fair fight; the one they never got in real life. It fits.”

Hate nods in agreement. “You're wrong, skip.”

The face of the man in your dream - in his expression, somewhere deep, is the key to the riddle. But you can't stand to look at it anymore. Sinking into a nearby chair as the chills sap your strength, you gesture to Hate invitingly.

Uh... something's wrong with this post.

Even though Clancy just so happened to be a prophet in regards to the shitstorm raging around in the Middle East, he's still not the best source in regards to military technology.

“I read up on those two ships. Admiral Graf Spee commanded the squadron. When the British battlecruisers surprised them, he turned to fight with just his heavy cruisers, so his CLs had a chance to leg it,” Hate explains. “He closed the range aggressively - even drove one of them off with their light guns, since their shooting was so accurate.”

Hate's eyes bore into yours, unblinking and cold.

“His last signal was to Gneisenau, telling her to attempt escape. He turned to try for a torpedo attack. Sank about seventeen minutes later, with all hands.”

“Christ,” you whisper.

“It gets better,” Hate says quietly. “Two of Spee's sons were in that squadron. They died with him.”

For long moments the only sound is the subdued whirr of the wound vaccum.

“Why are they abyssals?” Hate asks you quietly. “Of all possible ships... why them?”

[ ] Everything they fought to protect... it all came to naught, in the end. Germany failed them, in the end, and it left them adrift.

>Those same "simply not large enough to stop a 1930's era destroyer" 5" guns also wrecked Japanese destroyers when they hit (not surprising, given that destroyers lack armor).

Destroyer on destroyer engagements were very few and far between during the war. Usually the USN destroyer forces vastly outnumbered the opposing IJN destroyers, which ended in them simply being outgunned. The exception being at the 2nd naval battle of Guadalcanal, where the Japanese destroyers mowed down several USN DD's early on for no losses themselves.

Also keep in mind that destroyer on destroyer engagements occur at VERY short ranges. Neither side is going to launch torpedoes at an enemy destroyer (if they even have any left), and even a 5" gun is going to kill you at only 4-5km. Compare that to a 5" guns trying to fire on several destroyers out past 10 kilometers that are shitting torpedoes at you. At that range, a 5" shell is absolutely CRAWLING towards the destroyers, taking nearly 18 seconds to reach the target, and a single or even a few 5" hits are not guaranteed to stop a destroyer.

>Oh, and 5" shells were apparently big enough to trash the superstructure of a goddamn battleship, as well as savage even heavy cruisers badly enough to make them withdraw.

Anything can trash a superstructure, its completely unarmored and is a massive vertical target. This about shooting at destroyers, not battleships and under-armored heavy cruisers with 1.2" thick turret faces.

I'll break this down for you.

A 5" HC shell weights pounds, with the bursting charge at most being about 4 pounds. It takes 17 seconds for it to reach out to 10,000 yards.

A 6" HC shell weighs 105 pounds, contains 13 pounds of explosive, and takes roughly 11 seconds to reach 10,000 yards.

A 6" shell gets to the target faster, and it carries 300% more explosive power. It is much more likely to secure a disabling shot sooner than a 5" gun, and is capable of firing out to longer ranges.

Y'know what's fucking great? Data.

http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_5-51_mk7.htm

These were mounted on Arizona when she launched in 1913. Note how the bursting charges started at a measly 1.7 pounds of primitive shit (TNT ignited by black powder fuzes, for fucks sake,) and evolved to 7.25 pounds of rather more sophisticated (and powerful) explosive. Add to that the combination of high velocity and high accuracy those particular guns displayed, and I think they were perfectly decent anti-destroyer weapons, as the Japanese discovered during their first crack at Wake island.

A 6 inch gun kills things better, faster, and at longer ranges, of course. That's why they're the go-to armament for light cruisers, including the light cruisers the US built. But sometimes, it's just not worth the weight. There's a big difference between "good versus best" compared to "adequate vs. inadequate." On the balance I'm going to guess that the US knew what the hell they were doing when designing ships.

Not so few and far in between, off the top of my head, destroyer on destroyer actions happened during

> 1st Guadalcanal
> Empress Augusta bay
> Vella Lavella
> Cape St George

The USN AAR from these battles conclude that their destroyers had considerable gunfire superiority once the exchange of torpedoes was done. Not a few IJN destroyers were sunk by 5 inch gunfire.

18 seconds is not a long time in naval combat. Real destroyers can not turn on a dime or zigzag like they do in World of Warships. With WW2 technology, destroyers had to be sailing straight to use their own weapons effectively, and zigzagging to dodge fire makes it basically impossible to hold formations. Ships only evaded if they have a very good reason to, or if evasion is their only goal (as was the case with IJN Nowaki).

The other things is that destroyers are like thoroughbreds. It doesn't take much to take out out of action. At Cape St George, Yugiri was disabled by 5 inch fire during a tail chase; a 5 inch round hit her propeller shaft and that was that. She was overtaken and sunk by more 5 inch fire.

With the 5"/38, USN destroyers can fling an impressive amount of shells downrange. 15 rounds per minute, and 3.5 kilos of high explosives per shell.

Most 6 inch guns struggles to break 6 RPM; only the semi-cased guns on the American and German cruisers hit significant;y higher numbers. Throw weight/minute between the 5"/38 and IJN 6 inch gun on the Mogamis were within 10% of each other.

She hasn't done anything of note in Ever, and it is sad for her. She was a distraction who got told off when Settle threw himself into the Kaga-Hornet-Zuikaku clusterfuck, there was the date (which was nice, and the most interesting thing she did), she was completely absent during the air raid, during the Bonins she channeled the touchy-clinginess of Kongou and got tossed away like a doll, she warned Settle to stay away from Shigure and was thankfully ignored, and then she fucked up our coffee though she was trying at least.
Yamato put it best, she's a good friend, and there's nothing wrong with that. Settle needs somebody he can just have breakfast or coffee with.
But the possible ~Issue~ that would lead us down her arc of ~Character development and Angst~ was mentioned once by Goto and promptly ignored and forgotten by us all.

It probably doesn't help the poor girl that she only got that date because Crix suggested it, and he can't even stay consistent with who his shipfu is.

Also, this, I forgot to mention. I think a significant factor is that, as far as I'm aware, the 5 inch gun was the largest one that could be loaded by one man - i.e. the largest gun firing a unitary cased shell; with powder and projectile all together in one package like a really big bullet. That had obvious consequences for rate of fire. Six inchers are fairly fast firing too, but they're never going to match a unitary cartridge, either in hand loading OR mechanical ramming.

Of course, by the time the 5''/38 dual-angle was developed, the higher velocity of 5 inch and the demonstrated value of dual-angle pretty much locked them in as secondaries.

Destroyers are unarmored, yes.

This is not an argument about destroyer versus destroyer though. Or even destroyer versus cruiser/DD at point blank. This is about the usefulness of 5" guns as anti-destroyer secondary armament on a Battleship.

A destroyer does not need to close to 2,500 yards to launch a torpedo at your battleship. If anything, he may never approach within 10,000 yards of you. That is the very edge of effective range for a 5" gun, but well within effective range of a 6" gun, which is also going to hit much harder, and disable the destroyer in fewer hits. I'm not saying a 5" gun WONT do that, but a 6" gun will do it quicker and more reliably.

Well no, the 5 inch ~cased~ guns have rounds that are much too heavy for one man to handle. All the 5 inch rounds are two piece, since even the "light" 5"/38 has a combined case+shell weight of 40 kilos, definitely not a one man job.

The 100mm type 98 was one piece thou, which helped a lot with achieving it's high ROF.

Conversely, the 12.7cm 3rd year type was *bagged*, which butchered the ROF and made powder handing a nightmare.

You're talking out of your ass. There were a bunch of destroyer-on-destroyer engagements in 1942 and 1943, and torpedoes were used a lot in pretty much all of them. Hell, there was one engagement in which several USN destroyers set up an ambush on a Tokyo Express line of IJN destroyers, which involved using radar to aim and fire their entire spreads of torpedoes BEFORE opening fire with guns. The torpedoes then blew up more than half of the Japanese destroyers.

And regardless, it doesn't matter if one of the battles was a clusterfuck at point-blank ranges. The ships are unarmored; using HE shells, you can't overpenetrate.

Thats actually an error on Navweaps part. The later Special Common rounds still only had 1.7 pounds of filler. Only the VT AA shell shared with the 5"/38 ever had 7.25 pounds of explosive in it.

I'm taking courses to be a pilot. Yes, piston engines tend to run a bit cooler than turbofans. Turbines (the rear part of any diagram of an engine) can reach somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit and before people start calling BS, they use a copper nickel alloy to deal with it, or something like that, it's been a little while.

Not even the retard who's been arguing about 6-inchers versus 5-inchers.

A common shell physically cannot contain as much explosives as a dedicated high explosive shell, for the simple fact that the walls of the shell have to be thicker in order for it to be able to fulfill the "common" part of its designation by penetrating even mild steel without it bursting on contact. Thicker shell walls = smaller internal volume for explosive.

For the 6"/47 on the Brooklyn's and Clevelands, the shell was too heavy for humans to handle, the things weigh 130 pounds each. The case was lighter, at only 70 pounds each, in the extreme upper bound of what a human can handle.

The gun was "autoloaded" in that the shell and case were brought above the ramming tray by the hoist, then simply rolled onto the ramming tray and rammed into the gun that way.

I'm no expert in chair force, but hasn't there not been a gun kill at super sonic speed since the Gulf War?

Now, that's not talking about the Phantoms, of course. I'm just saying the general idea isn't the problem, it's when you implement it.

Handing every squad a gatling gun in the mid 1800's is not a good idea, even if a similar idea is good 50 or 100 years later.

The M3 Lee performed fine for what it was, a stopgap until we could start shitting out Shermans.

Keep in mind that when it rolled out, German Panzers were still armed predominately with:

7.5cm/L24's
3.7cm/L45's
5cm/L42's
2cm/L55's

None of which could penetrate the front of a Lee at any reasonable distance. Even the later 5cm/L60 had trouble with that, and those were few and far between. Even fewer still were the long barreled 7.5cm/L43's on the Panzer IV specials.

>The Airacuda was also saddled with a complex and temperamental electrical system and was the only aircraft ever built to rely on an independent auxiliary power unit (APU) to power both engine fuel pumps, as well as all aircraft electrical systems.[10] Systems usually powered by an aircraft's engines were instead powered by the single generator. The generator, with its own supercharger, was located in the belly of the aircraft. In the event of a failure (and they occurred frequently), the crew was instructed to begin immediate emergency restart procedures as the aircraft basically shut down. When the APU failed, the pilot had "NO fuel pressure, NO vacuum, NO hydraulic pressure, NO gear, NO flaps and NO ENGINES".

He has a point. I disagree with him, but there's a valid argument there.

What if MBTs are in fact like battleships and are obsolete? Shouldn't we at least TRY to adapt in some capacity?

Now I do disagree and think there will always be a need for a giant well armored mobile cannon, but we might need to rethink how we use them and maybe design something to fulfill the same role in asymmetrical warfare environments rather than constantly pretend every single enemy is the fucking Russians.

Why use a jackhammer when a simple hammer would do? We'll always need MBTs so long as our major rivals like Russia and China use them, but for fuck's sake why do we need to use them against a bunch of ragheads whose collective cost amounts to several hundred dollars worth of guns, ammo, and goat milk?

You know, I've always wondered.

Once you get past a certain speed in space, do you have to start worrying about aerodynamics again?

Not saying that there is atmosphere in space of course, but is there enough particulate matter that, at a sufficient velocity, you actually have to worry about how to cut through it as efficiently as possible?

Well, China's MBTs have been becoming steadily more sophisticated as they take cues from western design philosophies, and Russia is prancing the Armata around (even though imo it's a highly overrated tank).
>>
>>46212626
I think that at the speed where stellar particles become a fluids issue you're already dealing with relativistic effects.
>>
>>46212600

>>
>>46212600

There is a fucking difference between 'trying to adapt'- something the fucking russians did with their Terminator or what the fuck ever T-72 hull, twin 35mm and ATGM rack for fucking example, and "LOL HURRR WE DON'T NEED TANKS ANYMORE FOR WARS WE'LL FIGHT!"
>>
>>46212626
At high speeds you worry about space dust poking holes into your ship, actually.
>>
>>46212626
No, because past a certain speed the particulate will cut through your ship instead.

I believe at 86% c an object has more kinetic energy than it does mass.
>>
>>46212655
The entire point of Armata is an attempt to standardize the Russian tank fleet.

Whether it's a good tank or not is of secondary concern to Russia.
>>
>>46212626
It's not speed itself in space that makes a difference, it's the acceleration.

You could get into the rotational velocity of small matter that comes into contact against the ship but it's generally so non-existent it doesn't matter.

>>46212655
Well that's Russia and China and I think those are valid uses for an MBT.

But do we really need them in the Middle East, where they become giant expensive targets for IEDs or sitting ducks in urban environments?

I know a lot of /k/ommandos like to pretend war is about who has the biggest cock and can fuck other people more impressively, but if the US spends several billion dollars on a war and the terrorists spend several million, we're the ones who eventually have to pull out due to public outcry. Not them, who get funding despite every effort by the World's financial system to freeze their assets.

Saying we can kill all the terrorists, being able to kill them all, and being able to keep killing them until they stop fighting are three very different things. This is not WW2, we are not fighting a nation state, we are fighting ideologically motivated extremists who thus far run circles around us. We aren't extending our influence into their countries successfully, but they are.

Brussels and Paris are just two examples of this. They're winning, not us and our big expensive toys.

Are tanks useful against Russians? Yes. I don't know how many times I have to say so. Not useful against terrorists, though.
>>
>>46212737
And as every conflict since World War Fucking One has demonstrated, an old tank is a dead tank.
>>
>>46212647
It was the one *on-base* at MCAS Miramar. The Marines had all of the toys out for the civilians to examine close up. As a result, I now know how much room there is in an Abrams (more than you'd expect, actually), how bad a Geneva Convention violation the back seat of a HMMWV is (BAD), and how simple the controls on a Stinger actually are.

I also have to chuckle at the memory--they had small arms out (unloaded) for civilians to examine and handle, too. I picked up the M249 SAW and shouldered it... and the Marine who was watching over it commented, "You know, you're the first person to hold that correctly ALL DAY." Apparently, everyone else held it at the hip, Rambo-style...

Tanks are obsolete the way battleships were obsolete in WWII. Sorta kinda, but not really. Their role is definitely changing, and slowly but surely going the way of the dodo (the fate of all things, really), but I'd say we still got at least a few decades left before we see the end of them entirely.
>>
>>46212737

Except that's just as fucking stupid. Maybe we don't need new fighters, either, fucking right? Or new ships, for that fucking matter- afterall, haji ain't gonna suddenly sprout a battlefleet or goddamn airforce, is he? We should just prepare for the wars we've fought in the past, surely that won't fucking bite us in the fucking ass like it's done every other fucking time we've done it!
>>
>>46212600
The MBT is not obsolete, we just haven't run into a scenario where it's tactical niche is brought to the forefront.

If we were to fight a nation with a proper military (rather than the illiterate dirkastani chucklefucks we've been at for the past ~25y), we would need to engage their armored forces. This means that our *ground forces* would need to project armour penetration to kilometer-scale ranges - hundreds of yards if you're a fatclap. Either way, that's slinging shells far beyond rifle or man-portable launcher ranges. Granted, most medium AFVs (IFVs and APCs) can mount ATGM launchers, but they, in turn, will get fucked over by those same ATGM launchers. In order to safely engage medium AFVs, you want heavy AFVs, like MBTs.

Guarantee you, if the USA ever goes up against Russia/China/EU or anyone else who wants to challenge their global hegemony, they'll want those tanks.

The tanks are valuable for direct fire support during MOUT, provided that you leave them on their lonesome like what Syria and Iraq did.

If you actually follow the the shit happening on the mid-east threads on /k/, ISIS has been getting constantly since the Kurds have retaken Kobane and Russia has gone into backseat commanding for the Syrian Army. so much that ISIS now has to deal with constant desertions. Constant air bombing isn't as glorious as a stand-up battle. But you can't do war when your mid-level and senior leadership and logistics gets constantly assasinated by drones.

Dude, imagine how useful a small forklift would be. I'm being dead serious.

>Anyone just waiting for the day powered armor comes into play on the battlefield?
Any day now desu. All 'power armor' really is is a fucking load-bearing frame, and we're already actively testing those, both in DARPA and as an extension of civilian prosthetics. Once you remove the weight limitations imposed by the human body, you can just bolt ceramic plates on, mount an LMG on a swing-out arm and sling a launcher across the back for good measure.

I'm not on the clock right now so I don't give a shit.

its a legitimate question if you don't know much about tactics. It's basically a poorly phrased version of the question "are tanks used enofgh in modern warfare (ie peacekeeping missions aginst small dictatorships) to justify upgrading our inventor rather than spending those resources on other weapons.

>But you can't do war when your mid-level and senior leadership and logistics gets constantly assasinated by drones.

Brussels says otherwise.
>>
>>46212901
The problem with stopping development of tanks, or any weapon system for that matter, isn't the immediate. It's thirty-forty years down the line when everyone who didn't stop is sporting shiny new shit and you're stuck with crusty old tin cans because you didn't NEED the shiny shit.
Imagine if Germany had stopped after the invasion of France, seen their Pz Is and IIs that won the war for them up until that point and said "Yep, this is fine. Surely we won't need anything more"

Or, for a more concrete example, see Japan circa 1942

Oh sure. The big problem though is still power storage. In a loading bay you can avoid this by having it plugged in to the power grid, but on patrol...

Or the state of the Russian jet fighter industry after the collapse of the USSR. They STILL haven't figured out how to pull themselves away from the Flanker airframe or develop actual engines for it.

Brussels was a rushed attack by a terrorist cell because they feared getting caught because one of their own squealed on them.
ISIS is like a franchise. You're far away from sandniggerstan say that you pledge your loyalty to to ISIS. Congratulations, now all you have to do is kill a lot of takfiri apostates while we figure out how to run a medieval caliphate while most of the world's militaries try to kill us.
>>
>>46213089
>Murdering civilians and not affecting the country in any tangible way is war now.

Ugh right then.
>>
>>46213092
Well that's why you do incremental development, not the "whole new platform". That way many of the systems needed are already advanced by the time you need a whole new combat platform to mount them on.
>>
>>46213152

new thread!

All I can say is this: Pier Ops and edit aircraft and edit docked boats hot keys. I don't care about the rest of it.
>>
>>46213176
Which, you know, IS EXACTLY WHAT THE M1A3 IS.

Besides that, incremental upgrades aren't the be-all, end all. Eventually, you're going to reach a dead end in some aspect. And by the time you've reached that point, with all the money you've spent on incremental upgrades, you could have just built a new platform.
>>
>>46213139
>Oh sure. The big problem though is still power storage
Yeah, and that's a problem for a *lot* of other things. We're still on the same old fucking chemical batteries that we've been running for decades upon decades now - everything since lead/sulphuric acid reactions in a wooden box has been iterative improvements.

If the nerds at DARPA or in the private sector can figure out a new way to store electrical energy then that would be a fucking *huge* innovation, probably comparable to the advent of cheap steel in industrial quantities. Not glorious, but an entire fucking era was built on that shit.
>>
>>46212655
Yeah. And we're not going to be getting into a fight against top-line russian or chinese tanks anytime soon. Because nuclear weapons kinda take all the fun out of direct wars between great powers, escort it behind the building and shoot it in the head.

For pretty much any realistic scenario we're facing in the predicable future, M1A2SEP is bordering on overkill as it is. Better to invest into lighter vees, drones and similar more pressing sectors while keeping a M1A3 or completely new MBT design on the backburner to have the ability to implement it when we actually need it in the future.
>>
>>46212782
>we're the ones who eventually have to pull out due to public outcry.

So you understand that terrorists are political animals, so when you say "they're winning" you must, by necessity, think that they're winning the war of wills.

Dunno about that bro.
>>
>>46213174
>HELLO

>MOST YOUR SHIT IS NOW DONE BY DRONES AND DISGRUNTLED STRIKE FIGHTERS

>having to contact an entire fucking other branch of service and wait for them to take their sweet fucking time to come over and please bomb these tanks

>relying on not-necessarily-a-given air superiority

it is best if the army can solve the army's own fucking problems without having to ask someone else nicely.
>>
>>46213253
This is not 1942 friend. You can't put a design on the back burner and expect it to be produced in any reasonable quantities anytime soon.
>>
>>46212782
>they're winning

Terrorism isn't a winning tactic, it's one used out of desperation because you can't actually hit your enemy in ways that truly hurt. ISIS is stepping up terrorist attacks because they're getting their shit kicked in in Iraq and Syria and need cheap propaganda coups, not because it's their first choice of action.
>>
