As noon approaches, you duck under the awning of a food cart to escape the heat. You lean on one of the wooden posts for a moment, to remove your boots and dump out the sand that has collected over the long morning you've spent searching for your mark.

As you pull your road worn footwear back on, you peer around the busy market. All around men and women dressed in long, protective clothing wander here and there, purchasing whatever catches their eye at the time. You wonder how many of them are foreign, like you, and how many of them are being ripped off as you stand here, catching your breath.

"Hello! Friend!" comes a voice from beside you. It's the owner of the stand supporting you at the moment, holding out some sort of meat on a stick, slightly charred and sizzling.

"You buy, yes!"

You only have a little coin left, but you are a bit peckish. It might be better to wait until you've found the man you're looking for to start spending though.

You ask what type of meat he's pushing on you, but he seems to just smile and shove the stick in your face, as if seeing it up close will make it more appetizing. The more he shoves it on you, the more the sickly sweet smell of the thick sauce seems to annoy you.

"You buy, yes! Two coins! Best in town!"

With your limited grasp of his language, you can only just catch a few words, but he repeats them incessantly.

You turn away from the stick and raise your hand in the best 'no' motion you can think of. His warm smile turns to a sour frown so fast you think his cheeks might have whiplash. His attention turns from you to another passerby, a woman who seems just as surprised as you, but wholly unable to refuse his meat pushing as you did. You move away from the stand, and head toward the center of the market, hoping to find some clues as to the whereabouts of your target along the way.

As you walk, you notice a good number of the locals seem to be wearing swords, or at least knives on their belts. None of them are as large as the two-handed cleaver you carry on your back, but you don't think starting a fight around here will end very well, especially if you pick the wrong person.

Just as you're thinking that, someone comes stumbling out of the crowd, slamming into you, almost knocking you over. You are just about ready to shout at him, when you notice he is bleeding from the stomach, and clinging to your tunic with a red colored fist.

"Help! Help me!" he cries, tugging at you. You look in the direction he just came from, and see a man in chainmail, carrying a bloody scimitar, who looks to be on the warpath.

>>46247365
You slap his hand away, sending him sprawling into the sand as you take a step back. The approaching man raises his sword, causing the bleeding man to scream, only to be silenced as the blade comes down, slicing open his windpipe. The man dressed in chainmail hacks at his victim three more times, each more unnecessary than the last, until he is but a bloody mess on the sand. Most people turn away here, hoping to get back to their shopping without incident, but the man in chainmail sees you, and the bloody handprint on your tunic, and turns his blade at you.

"You, foreigner! You are under arrest for aiding a criminal! Come peacefully or I be taken by force!"

You can see the adrenaline in his eyes from here. He's hopped up on murder. You think you might be able to talk him down, but a wrong move could mean a fight.

You tell the man to take his attitude elsewhere, but the doesn't seem too keen on it. He raises his sword and rushes at you, fully intent on killing. His footwork is sloppy, his eyes are closed, and he isn't even choking up on the grip properly. A grown man is charging at a fifteen year old, and he can't even be asked to have proper form.

You plant your back foot, and raise the other, delivering a powerful kick to his gut, and sending him ass first into the sand. He falls back, dropping his weapon. As soon as he realizes what's happened, he scrambled to pick up the scimitar once more, but you kick it away, and it's scooped up by a passing child who dashes away with it, probably to hurt himself somehow. The man, now confused and afraid at your feet, begs you to forgive him.

You say nothing, only turn away and leave the man stewing in his own ineptitude. You notice several rubberneckers watching you as you go, but pay them no mind. You're more than used to being leered at by now.

After another two hours or so of searching for a sign, you give up for a minute, and sit down to rest by a small well. People come and go, drawing water in buckets and jars, saying nothing to you as you bake in the desert heat. You think about taking a drink yourself, but you know better than to trust strange water. After while though, something catches your eye.

A tall, slightly hunched man in white robes approaches the well, with something long and wrapped in dingy cloth affixed to his back. His cracked face, salt and pepper facial hair, and piercing eyes make him a dead ringer for the man you're looking for. He doesn't seem to notice you.

You keep your eyes on him as he approaches, stopping beside the well and tying the public rope around the mouth of a tall jug. He drops it down into the water, causing a faint splash. He waits a moment, presumably to let the water fill the jug below, before tugging on it to raise it back up. As he pulls on the rope to recover his jug, you notice his eyes quickly dart over to you, then go back to his work. You say nothing.

When the jug is finally back in his hands, he turns to you, face still as stone, and stares. It unnerves you a bit, and you think it might be time to speak, but before you do, he finally opens his mouth.

"Go home boy. The man you're looking for isn't here."

You tell him you don't quite understand. This seems to turn his frown into a scowl.

"I won't stand here and play word games with you. Get gone, and do it quick. You won't find anything or anyone to help you in this city, only disappointment and regret."

You continue to lock eyes for a while. You catch yourself being drawn to the bundle on his back now and again, and he seems to notice. He turns ever so casually to keep it out of view, but you know what it is at a glance.

After a while, he seems to grow tired of the staring contest, and turns to walk away. You need to convince him to confess the truth, or at least hear your request.

You reach over your shoulder and grip the handle of your weapon, tugging on it and sliding it free of the hooks holding it in place on your back. As the steel rings, the old man stops in his tracks. You level the sword with him, saying nothing, but speaking volumes with your one action. He turns, sees the blade shimmering in the sunlight, and sighs. All around you, locals and tourists alike are moving away, and yet remaining close enough to observe the showdown. The old man notices this as well, and seems to turn slightly red at the notion of being observed by so many. Finally, he sets down his jug, and pulls the bundle strapped to his back over his shoulder, holding it out so that the tip just touches the tip of your own sword.

"If this is the only way to get you away from me, fine. Make your move."

You tell him you just want to be heard, and it actually seems to resonate a little. He peers around, growing anxious with the crowd gathering here, and sighs, slinging the bundle over his back again, and lifting his jug from the sand. He turns away, but looks back over his shoulder before beginning to walk.

"Follow me, and be quiet until we arrive." You nod, and stow your weapon as you trail after him.

The two of you arrive at a small, mud and stone building not long after, and he leads you around the side to a door that he unlocks with a large iron key. You enter after him, wiping your feet out of courtesy, regardless of the fact that the floor inside is just as much dirt as the ground outside.

He sets the jug on a table across the room, and sits down on a wooden crate beside a black iron pot that dangles over a fire pit. You shut the door behind you, and follow him into the room.

"Pour two cups,' he says, motioning a lazy hand toward the jug. You see a pile of unwashed clay bowls beside it.

You cross the room and pour the jug into two separate bowls. The cool water splashes the table a bit, but you manage to get them full. You set the jug down, and bring the bowls with you back to the old man, handing him one before grabbing a crate and pulling it close to sit across from him. He sips his water, and you do too.

"So, spill it then. Why are you here."

You tell him everything. About wanting to be a swordsman, about hearing the legends of the Fallen Paladin, about trekking across the Valley of Death alone for weeks, and about arriving in town. He listens intently, draining his cup little by little as you go on. When you finish, he throws back the last of it.

"Yes, well, Francis Castillo of the White Order is long gone. It's like all the stories say. I fell, and hard. I've been excommunicated, stripped of my holdings, and even stricken from the canon. All I have now is this dented, chipped hunk of steel that used to be a sword," he says thumbing at the bundle that was once on his back, and is now set beside him in the dirt.

You can get a lot done with a closed fist. But it's a fleeting sort of control. Someone will come along with a, harder fist. That's not a path I want to send another man down."

When you arrive, you see a veritable feast laid out on the breakfast table, including flapjacks, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, buttered toast, mixed fruit, muffins, biscuits smothered in gravy, and a tall mug of black coffee to name a few. Vanessa runs out in front of it all and waves her arms, smiling cheerfully.

"Surprise! Happy Father's Day, for the best most nicest daddy in the multiverse!"

You tell Vanessa that you'll never be able to eat all of what she's prepared, delicious as it looks. She seems a bit sullen.

"I know, Daddy, but I wanted to make sure there was everything you like, because you're my daddy and it's your very special day! And you always used to look so sad when you would come home from work and there wasn't any hot food in the house. That's why I learned to cook when I was little, so I could make you something good whenever you came home!"

You think back to when Vanessa was only five years old. She learned to cook instant ramen and five minute macaroni, and would often force it on you when you came back from a long day of slaying. She would even fork it into your mouth for you as you sat in your easy chair. You always hated the taste, but choked it down just to see her smile. You never knew it was all for your sake.

"Come on, sit down!" Vanessa says, smiling as she tugs on your arm. You let her pull you to the table and sit down across from her. You look for a fork, but can't seem to find one. You look over to Vanessa, and see that she has both a fork and knife in her hands, and is hard at work cutting things into small, bite sized portions. When she has sectioned a bit of everything, she stabs a few sections of the flapjacks, drizzled in syrup, and holds them out to you.

"Say ah, Daddy," she says, grinning from ear to ear. You remember her little flowered apron, and the way she was always carefully watching the pot as it came to a boil.

You open wide and let Vanessa stuff your mouth full of warm pancakey goodness. As you chew, she proceeds to stick a bit of sausage and egg on the fork.

"Here comes the trade ship, Daddy! Getting sucked into the whirlpool to be crushed by a kraken and have all of it's crew devoured!"

Vanessa feeds you forkful after forkful for a while, basking in the alone time and absolutely glowing with joy as you eat. When you're finally full, you clean your mouth off with a napkin and stand, patting your slightly bulging belly.

Vanessa hugs your arm and walks you back to your room, leaving you to dress yourself for the day. When you emerge from your bedroom, she has already morphed into her suit, and latches onto your arm again as soon as she is able.

Vanessa pouts a bit, but releases your arm and straightens out her skirt and jacket before you teleport together. You arrive in the conference room, and take your seats.

Duncan is still missing, off handling the investigation of the massive fire that struck a forest near the city. The rest of your advisors are in attendance, even Marigold, though she refuses to remove her horned helmet as a representative of the Hellraisers.

Things seem business as usual, though it doesn't go nearly as smoothly as when Duncan is mediating. Near the end, Gilbert brooches the topic of the new weapon design, and the progress he is making.

"I'm almost ready to assemble the first prototype. However, I require a special material from the fourth pit of hell. A unique type of sulfur that can be found there. Unfortunately, I lack the ability to cross the aetheric plane. With your permission, I could purchase a small supply. It won't be cheap, but I need it to complete the next phase of testing."

You allow it. Gilbert thanks you for your generosity, cackling to himself as he wrings his hands and grins eerily. You bring the meeting to an end, and most of your advisors stand and begin heading back to work. Vanessa stays behind, watching as people leave, tapping her finger nervously on the conference table and trying not to glance at you as things wind down. Caitlyn is the last to leave, approaching you meekly and asking for your attention.

"Um, yes, sir? Sorry, I don't mean to bother you, I know you're super duper busy," she rambles, and you notice Vanessa scratching at her neck. It seems she's experiencing some sort of withdrawal symptoms from the lack of physical affection.

"-what I mean to say is, if it's not too much trouble that is, if there's any chance at all, should you deem it acceptable," continues Caitlyn.

Vanessa stands, dusts off her lap, walks around the corner of the conference table, and sets herself gently in your lap, where she rests her head on your breastplate and sighs, letting the tension in her muscles wash away. You pat her back and tell her you're proud of her holding back for as long as it took to complete the meeting.

"I don't mind if it makes you happy, Daddy. I'll get used to it with practice." You rub her head and mus her hair, which she fixes carefully before hopping down. The two of you leave the conference room together, and walk back to your office. On the way, Vanessa chats you up a bit more.

"Daddy, I've been meaning to ask you. Why did you invite that girl here? I'm not gonna be jealous anymore, but I think I deserve to know who she is if she's going to be near my favoritest daddy."

You let her know that Caitlyn is Ray's student, and you're looking after her studies for the time being. Vanessa seems happy to know you're only letting her stay as a favor to Ray.

"I see. If that's all, then I guess she's not so bad. Maybe I should take her to hell for a day trip."

"Daddy!" Vanessa slaps you on the arm, likely doing more damage to her small hand than your steel plate.

"I told you I'm not gonna be jealous anymore! I just want to know everybody who comes, to work for us. Because if any of them make my daddy mad, I'll find them, and nail them to the floor, and rip out their eyes, and when they pass out from pain I'll enter their dreams and torture them for a hundred years in the span of a single second!" You can see her horns beginning to emerge from her head again as she curls her fingers into claws, but after a moment she calms down and her head goes back to normal.

Vanessa accompanies you back to your office and finally lets go of your arm when you open the door and enter. She blows you a kiss and scurries off to get her own work done.

You cross the room, lifting your desk with one hand from the heap you left it in when you threw it across the room. After setting it back in the spot you like, you sit down and start going through stacks of reports and files.

It seems like the scouts from the western kingdom have ceased normal operations, but there are rumors of them raising a great number of new troops recently. They still have shown no sign of direct aggression, but only time will tell. Furthermore, the nation to the far north, home to Shaka's employers, has calmed. Shaka himself has been released, but is no longer working for them for reasons of disloyalty. As of now, he is a freelance Necromancer, and is at the moment heading a large scale project to revive an ancient dragon.

Finally, near the bottom of the stack, there are reports of a young adventurer doing odd jobs far to the south. Slaying minor monsters, freeing captive slaves, etc. The only reason it's worth nothing, is that the description given matches that of Cruz' one time pupil. If it is her, then you cannot underestimate her tenacity.

You sort the reports and begin thinking of you next big move.

>>

You make a note, telling Gilbert to devote as much time as he can spare to the automaton project. That done, you pull over your trusty evil Rolodex and find Shaka's card in the mix, before sending a message to him in regards to working for you. You propose meeting for drinks to discuss things.

You continue to put your nose to the grindstone for the remainder of the day, all the way up until after dinner, when Vanessa brings you a plate of food and a kiss on the cheek.

As you sit at your desk, straightening pages and sort them for pick up come morning, Duncan enters the office. His face is haggard, as if he hasn't slept. You ask how the investigation of the fire went.

"Little in terms of solid results. The bodies still can't be identified, except for some basic traits. The adventurer we captured seems to believe they really are from his companions, but we believe he is too emotionally compromised to be a reliable judge. I've accompanied the team combing the burned forest for signs of survivors, but so far no luck, and we've covered the are nearly twice."

You listen to Duncan, but can't ignore the way he seems to be wobbling on his feet.

You tell Duncan that he will do little good if he is exhausted, and order him to take a day to rest and recompose himself. He is reluctant, but you order him to do so, and he cannot argue. He leaves you in peace, with a few hours before bed to kill. You decide to spend time with one of your staff.

Can we ask him about that soulblast thingy of his and if there is any way we can help him train that ability?

You ask Legion how training has been lately.

"Fruitless. I fear I am limited by my nature. My body is at peak condition, and the more souls I consume the more powerful I feel. However, as a result, there is little to do to maintain my condition, and even less to learn simply through repetition."

You ask about his soulblast ability.

"A technique I honed using Shen's methodology. Unfortunately, it consumes a large amount of the souls that make me. Using is too often would almost certainly mean expending my own strength. As of now, the only thing I might do to improve myself is to find a plentiful source of free-flowing souls to incorporate into my being."

>"Then that's what we shall do."
>"I'll keep it in mind. For now, we'll just have to make do with the condemned and the slain."
>"I'm sorry, but we cannot prioritize such a high cost endeavor."

You tell Legion you'll look into it, but for now he'll have to simply be conservative with his fuel source. He understands, and you leave him to his loneliness.

Before turning in for bed, you have milk and cookies with Vanessa and kiss her goodnight. When you slide into your bed, Sophia snoring lightly across the room in her cot, you lay awake staring at the dark as you ponder the calm before the next storm.

Really sorry, but I'm gonna have to cut it here tonight. I'm dead tired, and can't think straight, and it's not fair to you all for me to write in this state.

I'll be back fresh tomorrow, and we'll get this ball rolling again!

Thanks to everyone who came by, please come back next time for more fun times and daughter love!

Okay this might be stupid but what about building an arena. We could have gladiators and fights and stuff, we could make Legion our champion which would provide him with a lot of souls and it would entertain the people.
