You are an orphan without a name, taken in by the Church of the Torch from childhood and raised by them. You were taught the teachings of the torch, as well as given an education of the highest quality. Today was supposed to mark the completion of your first 15 years of education alongside your fellow torchbearers. There was going to be a celebration and a ceremony, but the entire day is a blur. The last thing you remember is drinking out of a chalice alongside your peers, Father Pyrrhus telling you that this night, you will finally earn your names.

You begin to open your eyes as the shaking of a cart riles you awake, but your vision doesn’t return. Your hands are constrained behind your back by rope, there’s some kind of cloth wrapped around your eyes. You begin to shout but someone hits you in gut, winding you. A familiar voice whispers to you. “You are beyond the safety of the walls. We can only teach you so much from the inside. Return to the gates on the sunrise of the third day, do this and you will have earned your place in the order.”

You begin to panic as your bonds are cut and you are thrown from the carriage onto the ground below. The surface is damp and muddy. You want to scream but you’re afraid to attract any attention. You remove the cloth from your eyes and get a better view of your surroundings. You’re lying to the side of a deteriorating old road running through some woods. It’s the dead of the night, but the light of the moon is more than enough to get a good view of your surroundings. Fog makes it difficult to see where either end of the road leads but you can hear the sound of the cart heading in one direction. What should you do?

You are wearing the standard clothes of a torchbearer, which is to say, a cheap white robe with the emblem of a red sun on the front.

Strapped to your waist you have your belt and a pouch containing a small tome filed with the teachings of the torch. You also have a copper medallion with the image of a fire on the front. These are generally clutched between hands during prayer.

Your dagger seems to have been taken from you.

You hear the clattering of the wooden wheels against the old stone road. You chase it as best you can trying to keep yourself calm. You hear some movement in the bushes, but as you pass them the noises seem to be nothing but a few harmless forest creatures.

You keep up as best you can, but as you stop to catch your breath, you begin to lose the sound of the cart. You look around and you can barely see any difference between where you stand and where you started from and mist blocks any view of an end.

The cart is probably headed away from the temple, and won't return for the next three days, just to confuse people trying to find their way back so easily. But nor can we trust the road to lead back there, either, they probably took us along a branching path. Let's investigate the woods, try to get our bearings.

Looking over the roads, following the cart is very tempting, but you can't help but shake the feeling it could be some kind of trick.

You look to the woods and begin making your way through, stepping over fallen logs and ducking under branches. The woods are just like the ones you have within the kingdom, if a little scarier. It's the things you know lurk within them that scare you most.

The Torch favors the brave, you think to yourself as you wade further into the unknown, trying not to think about the second half of that saying.

"But never the foolhardy."

As you get further you notice the stumps of trees, like someone has been cutting them down. In the distance you see a clearing with a small log cabin, and to your right you notice a stream.

As you follow the stream you make sure to stay especially quite. You think your fear may be affecting you, you can't help but feel you're being watched... but every time you turn around or wait and listen you see no sign of a pursuer.

You get down low to the forest floor, attempting to remain as quiet as possible. As you lay flat with the ground you spot a few branches that seem sturdy enough to use as a weapon... well, in an emergency maybe.

As you lay there you continue to listen to the stranger. His voice is incredibly deep and raspy. If you had to guess you'd say he

There is a loud splash as he let's out a shout. "GOTCHA!" then a sigh as he mutters to himself. "Stupid dag-damned fish."

After a few minutes you hear the clamoring of metal and heavy footsteps getting quieter. Once the sound of the footsteps has faded, you wait a while longer just to be safe. You crawl over to the branches and grab the sturdiest one you can find, as well as sharp rock.

Carrying around a walking stick gives quite a different message from carrying a spear. Better to solve our problems with words if we can, and a poorly-sharpened stick won't help much more in a fight than a blunt one.

As I said, people will be far more suspicious of a man with a sharp stick than a blunt stick. Regardless of how safe we feel, we want to avoid fights if possible and use diplomacy where we can.

If our church was perfectly fine with arbitrary killing, it'd be a different story, but this is likely as much a test of character as it is skill.

You move to a stone nearby and rest on it, with some branches and a sharp rock in hand. You take note of your surroundings. You can clearly hear the stream flowing into the pond nearby. Not far from you there is an old fallen tree, and in the distance you can make out the silhouette of some kind of tree. You spend the next few hours attempting to craft a spear. It's more difficult than you remember.

You keep forcing it too hard and breaking the sticks. Eventually you get on a roll and manage to sharpen a decent point on the end of one. As you finish you look around yourself, the sun will rise soon, and you're starting to feel hungry.

I think I'm gonna take a moment for some exposition dump about the church and your role in it.

The Church of the Torch is a catch all for the whole religion. It's also the only religion people of your kingdom follow.

What you are is a torchbearer. The closest real world thing I can think of to this would be an alter boy. After about 15 years as a torchbearer, so you'll be between 15 to 20 years old, you are sorted into the order most suited for you.

The orders are Guardians, who are the shields of the city. Hunters, who are it's weapon. Rulers, who make up a council that decides what's best for the Kingdom. Finally there are the Saviors, who dedicate their lives to passing on knowledge, mastering the use of "The Gift" and keeping the people of the kingdom healthy in body, mind and soul.

You are 16 years old and have waited your entire life to become a Guardian.

You make your way through the bushes and find a fairly large pond. You work you find your way to a nice stump and rest on it while you remove your leather shoes. You leave them on the stump before wading into the pond.

The water is clear and much warmer than you expected, but you didn't expect your feet to sink so much into the mud. You instinctively pull your foot out as hard as you can and almost knock yourself over, as sticky as the mud is, it doesn't seem like it will be very hindering to your movements.

You spend probably a little over an hour trying to spear fish and manage to catch one. The sun is rising now, you're starting to feel a little safer.

You wipe the mud from your feet as best you can before grabbing your boots from the stump. You decide it'd be for the best if you moved away from this place before building a fire, in case that stranger comes back.

You place your shoes on again, preferring to get them a little muddy to going barefoot. You move into the woods with your spear in one hand, with the fish on the end, while you use your free hand to move branches out of your way. You reach a clearing and plant the blunt end of the spear into the ground fairly easily. You try your best to remember your training as you gather rocks to form a circle, as well as fallen branches to burn. You just wish the forest wasn't so damp.

With a good amount of sticks and even a decently large chunk of dead wood you found laying about, you think you may have what you need to start a fire.

You set up what you have into a fire pit as best you can, as well as set up the branches to the best of your abilities.

After enough gathering you manage to find a few leaves that are dry enough to use. You place them on the dead log and place a stick over them and begin rolling it in your hands back and forth.

You keep this up for a long time, you hands are aching, but eventually, you notice some smoke, barely any, but still there. You blow on it to keep it going, gently fanning it with your hands, until it really starts to catch. You place the catching fire starter under the branches and grab your medallion. Clutching it between your hands you close your eyes and pray... well, more like beg really. You focus on the fire and the flames begin to grow, ever so slightly.

The branches catch and your fire roars to life on no time.

You begin roasting your fish over the fire with your spear. It doesn't take long before it's ready to eat. The fish tastes amazing. It's true what they say, the best things in life are the things you work for.

You take the time to fire harden your spear after you eat the fish. It should be more durable now.

You lay back, exhausted and satisfied. You watch the smoke rise up from the fire.

You decide, with how difficult it was to make the fire, you ought to get as much out of it as you can. You begin gathering branches from around the clearing. You hear a twig snap. Something in the woods moves quickly out of view. If you had to guess you'd say it was just an animal, but you grab your spear just in case. You move back to the fire and begin sharpening another branch.

You barely finish the first spear when you hear heavy footsteps coming towards you, branches breaking. A familiar raspy voice muttering incoherently.

You spring into action, but what do you do?

You back up, with your spear ready behind you. You see a cloaked man approaching through the woods. He begins shouting at you.

"I thought I tol' you nymphs to..." He lifts his hood to get a better look at you. His face is pale green. He gives you a grin, showing off some missing teeth. His hands are long and clawed, wrapped around the hilt of a sword. Behind him looms a massive lizard's tail.

"Well 'ello there little boy. Are you lost? Have no fear, Uncle Greentooth 'll help you find your way."

The beast comes walking towards you slowly. Your entire body is shaking. This is the first beast you've seen before, even if it does look mostly human, there's no question, this is a beast. It's not just any kind either, it's a man-eater.

Positioning the fire between you and "Greentooth" you stay on guard and call out to him. You could be wrong about him, he's still mostly human, you might be able to reason with him. Besides now you get a better look at him, there's a chance he might be something else. What are the names of those snake beasts again? They're incredibly intelligent, great at using the powers of the gift and can be reasoned with too. God you hope he's one of them.

"So Mr.Greentooth was it?" You ask nervously as he steps into the clearing.

"That's right boy, now how bout you have a seat and tell me what you're doing in 'ese parts. It's dangerous here you know? There be some real pieces of work livin in 'ese ol' woods. Real fucked in the head." He smiles as he motions to his head with his weapon.

"You came in talking about nymphs? Were you expecting someone else?"

"O, juss some nymphs who 'ave been comin into my pond and stealing my fish, nothin you ought to concern yourself wif young man." He starts inching closer to you slightly. You back away.

"Oh come on then, I don't bite." he laughs to himself. "Okay maybe sometimes I do."

"You stay over there for now. Do you know the way back to the kingdom?"

"Ah, you're lookin for the king'em, I got a map right here actually."

He reaches into his belt and pulls out a roll of parchment. He extends his arm to give it to you.

"Can you throw it to me?"

Greentooth gives a friendly laugh. "You're standin in fromt a fire boy."

You take a deep breath and take a step forward, extending your hand you touch the parchment. In an instant he lets go of it and clutches your hand so tight you can't help but let out a scream of pain.

"Sorry boy, nofin personal, but I aven't 'ad a good eat in days. You 'old still, an I'm a lob it off. I'll patch you up nice and good like, I promise." he says with a smile as you struggle to pull yourself free. With his other hand he raises his sword, readying a swing at about your shoulder.

You manage to flick some hot coals directly into the eyes of Greentooth. He lets out a scream of pain and lets go of you. The parchment falls to the ground, rolling open. It's blank.

You sprint into the woods as fast as you can, ducking and weaving through branches and bushes, hoping over obstacles. You hear the footsteps of Greentooth chasing behind you, charging through every obstacle as he shouts at you.

"You're making a mistake! We 'ad a good deal you 'an I! You'll get nofin out there!"

The footsteps slow down and eventually come to a halt as the you hear Greentooth shouting, out of breath. "Don't you know where you are boy!? These are our lands! You're gonna die out here!" His laugh echoes through the woods. More laughter begins, a young woman's from the sound of it... then another, and then more. You hear laughing coming from all around you. You feel like you're loosing your mind.

You don't even look back, you just keep running. You're tearing up. You charge forward into a clearing, but misstep and take a fall down a small hill. You look back up at the woods you charged out of and see a silhouette with glowing red eyes staring back at you. It quickly vanishes into the woods.

Looking around the clearing you notice several totems set up. They seem to form a path to the log cabin you saw a while back. If the amount of crows nearby is any indication, this was set up by a harpy. Fairly passive beasts, but deceitful and greedy.

You look around the open field and can't help but begin to cry. You stay as quiet as possible. You're scared, you're cold and you're tired. You try to stay calm. You get up on your feet, nothing is injured which is good, just a little sore.

You begin walking up a very small hill towards the cabin, repeating all the nursery rhymes and sayings you can remember about harpies.

"Never trusts a crow." is the famous one.

"Feathered faces can be friendly faces, if you have something to offer."

or something like that...

You reach the top of the hill and stare at the cabin for a moment, trying to decide how best to approach it. Before you come to a decision the door swings open. You get low and stay out of sight. The hunched figure that steps out has the head of a crow, and is covered in rags. It looks around and mumbles to itself before slamming the door. Inside you can make out it's words.

"I don't know what you're talking about, there was nobody out there, your mind is playing tricks on you kid."

You seem a little upset there, friendo. The QM can ultimately do whatever he wants, I just don't want this quest turning into a sea of waifus this early. Funny that you got so defensive this early, though.
>>
>>46363479
>Funny that you got so defensive this early, though.
here's the story i've seen multiple times:
>QM makes new quest
>waifufag/furfag shill the quest
>QM want reader so end up diluting his story with impure waifu/fur shit
>story ruined by having 1/4 posts being about some inconsequential shit
>just one more waifu quest to add to the pile

can't we normal stories with fucking repeating stereotypes and tropes, is that hard to ask reader to stop asking for thing that have already been done hundreds of times.
>>
>>46363562
I don't think the QM will do the waifu shit though. It was just a conversation starter, like when I said all harpies were good, because I was bored inbetween writes.
Worth the wait though, fully enjoying it so far.

You gather you courage up. After all, the torch favors the brave. You wipe away your tears and walk up to the red wooden door. You clear your throat and use the knocker.

The door swings open and the harpy stands looking forward, standing at their full height, they tower over you. You recognize a prayer focus identical to your medallion around it's neck. The harpy looks down at you and their eyes widen.

"Oh no, this will not do, this will not do at all, shoo, get out, I will not be harboring any more humans. Go, get out!" The harpy gently pushes you away with their human hands, in leather gloves.

"No wait, I know him!" shouts a familiar voice. One of the older torchbearers you were raised with comes running up behind the harpy. He's got fiery red hair, and got a few inches on you. His face has a few cuts on it, and his arm is wrapped in bandages.

The harpy turns to him and squawks aggressively. "I don't care if you know him, you're paying to be here, this kid can go die for all I care." The harpy clears their throat and turns back to you.

"Sorry, please leave, try not to die."

At least Crows are intelligent. These harpies won't be shitting themselves and making a fuckload of noise for absolutely no reason.
>>
>>46363562
Well, that what I was trying to say to the QM. I didn't want waifu shit this early. I've not seen a furfag quest as of yet, unless you count furshit as including anthropomorphic races, which is (Normally) open to personal interpretation, and not meant to be sexual at all. That's all I've seen in this quest so far. I've not wanted to fuck anything in this quest so far, so that's a plus.

Some of the posts will always be about inconsequential shit, 's just how it goes. 4chan in general for you.

Now, as far as I can tell, this quest is about hunting monsters. This is just an initiation thing. So there's obviously more to it than what we've seen so far.

I just hope OP will make this quest last more than a couple threads, like most quests seem to do.

Gonna continue here for now. I've got the time to keep updating for quite a while, but if we reach a good breaking point, I'll end it there.

"Look, he's got a medallion too, he can pay with that like I did." the torchbearer protests.

"But I already have ones, I only wanted it because I thought they were unique. If he wants to stay, he'll have to pay. Hawk up the gold kid." The crow screeches at you.

"Please, you don't need to shelter me, but can you at-least tell me which direction the kingdom is in?"

"The kingdom? Yeah, yeah, I can tell you that much I suppose, but only if you promise to keep your mouth shut about this. I'd be killed if some of the others found out about this."

The harpy points towards the woods on the other side of the clearing, across from where you came out of as you ran away from Greentooth. "You keep going north, through there. Though I wouldn't recommend it if you like living. Spiders and snakes, not a very nice place."

The torchbearer grabs you by the shoulder. "You aren't seriously going back out there are you?" You're so exhausted at this point you just nod to him.

"Then I guess I'll see you back at the gate when the time comes then. For what it's worth, I think you'll make an excellent hunter. Be careful out there, I'd hate to lose another brother."

I'm having a really hard time pinning down what the fuck a beast is.

Are they races? The MC seemed to think it was possible to confuse whether a dude was a fucking snake or not.

Is it just a catch all term?

I'm half expecting the MC to repeat fucking "amongst elves, watch yourselves" and reveal his literally a KKK style order of murderers.

Keep down low and stick to high grass if there is any. We are in white robes so we should stain them with grass or dirt so they stand out less.

I'm hoping this is the case. Would be refreshing to actually kill shit for a legit medieval fantasy reason.

Good ol' racism.
