Hello, and welcome to Beast Hunter Quest. Last thread we left off with the nameless MC narrowly escaping a horde of arachne having just saved a harpy from becoming their next meal.

From a clearing in the trees on the edge of a small cliff, you get a great view of what lies ahead, including the shining walls of the kingdom in the distance. You just need to work your way down from this height and the rest should be an easy journey, with the exception of all the beasts that will no doubt be trying to kill you.

You look down at the harpy in your arms. You're not sure if she's going to make it much longer if you don't do anything. You lay her on the ground to get a better view of the bloody stumps on her back. You consider trying to stop the blood with your robes.

>Continue to the walls with harpy.
>Put harpy down.
>Leave harpy here.
>Write in.

Option with the most votes after 10 minutes will win.

At least have the decency to kill it yourself.

Wrap her up in the robes and take her with us.

>>Leave harpy here.
And we're back!
Still going to vote to leave her. I know we tried to save the harpy, but to what end? There's probably only an execution waiting for her in the Kingdom.
>>
>>46414282
There are two options for killing her, and I pointed out you're choosing the one that would be slow and painful. Sorry if that makes me sound like a dick.
>>

>>
You look over the wings and your robes. It may be too late for her anyways, and you can't afford to continue carrying her around. You think about putting her out of her misery, but you don't know enough about harpy's to go through with it, for all you know she might still recover. You try not to think about it as you turn back to the cliff face and look at the kingdom.

The cliff isn't too steep, or even all that tall, you could probably slide down with only a little difficulty. If you don't want to risk it, it seems there may be a some kind of path from here going downwards. It would be slower, but you do have the time. Your only concern is the path looks well traveled, and you're not too sure if you want to meet who's been using it.

>Try to go down cliff face
>Follow Path
>Write in.

>>46414534
The further away we are from the blood trail we left behind the better.

Wait, did any get on our clothes? If so we better look for a water source.
>>
You look down the cliff. You decide it just seems like an unnecessary risk and begin down the path, sword in hand. You give one last look back at the harpy on the ground before heading out.

As you go further along the path you try to keep your eyes fixed on the path in front of you. You do not look back, even.

You try to think of something else. You notice you got lots of blood on you during your escape, you wonder if you should even bother trying to clean it off.

Several minutes of walking pass and you have made decent progress, having a good view of the cliff side from here, though the angle stops you from being able to see if the harpy is still there. Again, you try not to think about it. The path seems to turn into the woods, following a stream, but if you were to continue north, in the direction of the kingdom, you'd have to break from the path.

word of advice QM

Why have your character save something and then abandon it?

I mean, don't retcon at this point. But it's just not an in-character thing if the MC literally just saved this creature from a bunch of spider monsters.

And it would also be out of character to have the MC save it again after abandoning it.

You fucked up, but remember how and why.

>>
>>46415007
It would be better to wait until after the thread for this but this anon is correct, once a choice has been established for the character it's best to have them follow through with it unless important information has changed the situation or otherwise altered how the MC would act.
>>
>>46415075
Says the samefag trying to samefag saving the harpy.
>>
>>46415091
Nope.

Not samefagging at all.

But somebody is, because there's 1 too many votes for the number of IPs.

So, y'know, time for final destination or for the QM to veto the saving the harpy vote.
>>
Voting closed.

>>46415007
The way I saw it was in the moment he wanted to save it, but when all of that was done and he had the time to really think about it, he didn't know how to continue, and sort of realized he'd be putting himself in a shit situation if he brought her with him.

At least, that's how I was thinking about it. It's a bit of a morality versus survival sort of thing. That being said it does feel out of character that when his life is on the line he would risk it to save someone, but when the danger has passed he goes back on it. I'll try to avoid this kind of situation in the future. Thanks for the advice.
>>
Well shit. There appears to be evidence of same fagging, but since I can't tell which has more than it should, I'm gonna go with "go north" mostly because I think the character is inconsistent enough as it is, without having him go back on his decisions, twice.

You stare down the path. It seems it probably leads to some kind of pond. You're just trying to make your way through to the kingdom as fast as possible, following the path any further just seems like a bad idea. You break off from the path and begin to wander through the woods, making your own trail.

You get down low as soon as you start hearing heavy running. You catch a glimpse up ahead of someone else running through the woods, terrified. They're wearing white robes like you, but you can't tell who they are from this distance. You want to call out to them, but in a few moments, you see a large beast chasing after them. Some kind of lycan maybe? It's carrying some kind of sword and chasing after on two legs, but it's human qualities end there, like some kind of bipedal dog.

The torchbearer up ahead trips and the beast begins to close in on them.

As the torchbearer gets to his feet he raises a spear to the beast. You catch a glimpse of his face and recognize the boy. He's only a little younger than you, you watch him for a moment, you want to shout at him to tell him to run, but he'd never listen anyways. He was always too stubborn. You start crawling through the forest floor, staying as quiet as possible.

The boy is quick on his feet, managing to dodge most of the creatures swings, but it doesn't last long. The boy stabs the beast through the leg and it lets out a howl of pain before knocking the boy to the ground with the side of it's blade.

You continue to crawl away as you hear the screams of pain coming from him, before they die down and you hear only the sound of teeth chewing on flesh. You can't bring yourself to look back. There was nothing you could have done. There was nothing anyone could have done. It's his own damn fault. He's just an idiot, he got himself killed. You wipe tears away from your face as you continue. He didn't even have a name, you think to yourself.

Eventually you've gotten far enough away and get yourself up from hiding. You wander out of the woods. You're shaking and crying, and you fall to your knees and start to throw up. In a few minutes you manage to calm down a little bit. You see an old road up ahead, going towards the castle. It should lead you to one of the smaller side gates.

As someone who selected the abandoning option with regrets all of this is very unstellar. I just wanted to live and was afraid of what we'd attract if we kept the harpy, I'm not happy at all about abandoning it. Pretty conflicted, honestly.

You continue down the road, trying to keep yourself calm. You turn back one last time into the woods and see two glowing red eyes staring back. You wander down the road for what feels like hours. As the sun forget the things you saw in the woods.

As the road comes to the gate you see a large crowd of torchbearers sitting around a fire. One of them spots you and runs over, it's the red haired boy from the harpy's home. He pats you on the back.

"You made it! Come to the fire, we got some fish roasting." his smile fades when he gets better look at your face. "Hey. the hard part is over, just one last night here with our brothers and sisters, and were home free."

You stay silent as he leads you back to the campfire. Some of the older torchbearers cheer and clap, while others sit silently, or weep. It's easy to tell the older ones are just putting on a brave face for the younger ones, so you try your best to put on a smile.

You sit quietly at the campfire while the others talk. The redhaired boy seems to be trying to keep the morale high, telling stories and jokes to the younger torchbearers who have crowded around him.

Over to to the side some of the others are trying to help one of your sisters, who appears to have a deep wound in her chest. There are a few other injured lying together as well.

Another torchbearer, who you were always too scared to talk to is forcing his fist against a tree as he swears angrily under his breath.

Nobody is holding up too well, that much is clear.

Eventually everyone turns to the road as they hear another torchbearer come up, breathing heavily, they seem injured.

You sit back as the torchbearer continues to walk forward. A few others head towards him and help bring him towards the campfire. He has his hood up and is rambling to himself.

He moves away from the campfire and sits by some trees, far away from everyone else. Some of the older torchbearers give each other concerned looks.

You try not to get involved. You eat some of the fish the others have prepared, and think about what you're going to do with yourself for the night.

As it gets later and some of the torchbearers lay down and begin to rest, you offer to some of the others to stand guards.

Everyone appreciates the offer, some of them haven't rested in over a full day. As you stand guard a few others stay awake to take care of the wounded, while others simply cannot sleep. You spend the next hour or so wandering around the campsite with your sword in hand. It's been a while since you last slept, you're getting pretty tired.

Every time you pass the strange torchbearer by the tree you can't help but feel like there something wrong with him. He continues to shake and mumble to himself for most of the night.

You wave towards one of the older torchbearers who's still awake. They give a nod and get up, beginning to patrol around the campsite. You break off and head towards to the strange torchbearer. As you get closer you remember seeing him around before, but you've never really talked to him before. It takes till you're only a few steps away from him before he notices you.

You notice as he looks up at you his face seems different. There are some cuts along his face, sure, but there's something else too. He looks up at you scared. "It wasn't my fault." He blurts out at you.

You approach, but avoid getting too close, before taking a seat next to him. You keep your hand away from your sword, to show you don't mean any harm.

"I'll listen." you assure him.

He shifts uncomfortably, he starts to protest but stops himself. "I was... I was in the woods with another boy... There was a beast nearby... and it's not like he hand a chance anyways. He would have just gotten me killed the way he was sticking his neck out for the others."

The torchbearer pauses for a long time.

You sit in silence for a moment. The idea of what this torchbearer has done to your brothers and sisters is just sickening. He goes to open his mouth again and you grab him by the throat, forcing him against the tree.

"Those were our brothers and sisters..." You begin.

He starts panicking, grabbing onto your arms with strangely clawed hands. As you hold your hands around his throat, you get a good look at his face. His eyes are wild and his teeth are sharp.

Despite the tears in your skin, you hold tight around the torch bearers throat until he slows down and eventually comes to a halt. Some of the other torchbearers manage to pull you away from him.

Then they all stare in horror at the monster that used to be their brother. The older torchbearer, whos knuckles are still bloody from punching the tree, grabs your sword from you and stabs the creature through the heart.

At first there are whispers but people begin to panic.

"We all know where beasts come from. This should be no surprise, that some would turn." He says as he hands your sword back to you.

Would you have mercy-killed it? Just as "worse" as leaving it to die. You're killing it either way.

You take your sword back and return to the campsite along with the rest of the crowd. You find a nice patch of grass, lay back and close your eyes. You lay awake for a few hours, thinking about what you saw tonight... You've always heard the stories, of the people who lose sight of their humanity, who live like animals and become beasts, but to actually see it happen, and to one of your own brothers.

You don't remember falling asleep, but you're shaken awake by some fellow torchbearers, the dream you were having quickly fading from memory. It's almost sunrise and the other torchbearers are standing in line at the gate.

The doors begin to open as a large group of guardians in armor come out, alongside several saviors, who immediately rush to the wounded.

A hunter stands in front of the torchbearers and begins to speak. You recognize his voice as Master Asmund, he was in charge of teaching the torchbearers survival, he's also the one who pushed you from the cart.

"Torchbearers. Today you have triumphed against the harsh world of the outside, as well as against your own natures. You have proven yourselves worthy in body, mind and soul, to have made it here. You have all earned your names, and I stand before you not as your superior, but as a brother, willing to aid you in your new life as hunters. We will continue your initiation in the safety of the walls."

As you enter the gates of the city, guardians and saviors carrying the wounded, there is a shout as another torchbearer rushes towards the gate, carrying someone over their shoulder.

"Hold the gates!" she shouts.

Asmund gives the signal to hold as the torchbearer rushes to catch up. He walks towards her and meets her part way.

"I need a savior." She says

Asmund eyes the body curiously. "Is this a fellow sister?"

"No sir, I just found her in the woods."

"And you carried her all the way here? For what purpose?"

The torchbearer looks confused, like that wasn't even a real question. "I... well... why wouldn't I have?"

Asmund smiles. "You've got a big heart, that will help you keep your humanity... but it's gonna get you killed one day young one." he motions to guardians to place restraints on the creature.

The torchbearer nods. "Yes sir, thank you sir." before running to rejoin the rest of the group. She winds up directly behind you in the line up.

"What a pathetic bunch you all are." he laughs, which soon becomes a cough.

"So, whether it's skill or luck that brought you this far, none of that matters anymore. There's gonna be a tight leash around all of you. You were all chosen to be hunters for a reason. Whether it's because you're too impatient to be a savior or a ruler, or you're too aggressive to make a good guardian, you were all chosen to be thrown into those woods, because you are the torchbearers most likely to have grown up to become beasts, this is the test and order that has the highest mortality rate for a reason, because Hunters are considered expendable. The church is not looking out for us, so we have to look out for each other. You must look out for your brothers and sisters, or you will out there, alone and afraid."

He lets out another cough and mutters some things to himself, as if he's forgotten what he was going to say next.

"Welcome to the Order of the Hunters. Over the next few months, you will be divided into teams of three, you will train, and you will be remade into the powerful weapons of the church you were always meant to be. Welcome to the family."

You take the parchment labeled Brandt and hand it to him. The savior smiles at you before taking the other two and placing them in the fire. You walk back towards the seating area and wait. Some other torchbearers... or hunters now I suppose, are excitedly sharing names, while others it back and wait quietly.

In few more minutes, the new hunters have all been assigned their names and are sitting patiently. The older hunters take the stage. You recognize some of them as people who helped raise you, though not nearly to the degree as the saviors did.

Each of the hunter takes turns stepping forward and reaching into a chalice, removing three pieces of parchment, and reading the names off of them. This pairs three partners. The group will be taught be kept together for the first portion of training.

It's fascinating to see these people you've known for so long rush onto the stage called by a name. Like the red haired boy, now you can finally call him "Aiden". You can't help but feel it's so strange, never having had something to call them before, they were just your brothers and sisters.

"Brandt" Asmund calls out as you are lost in thought.

You move quickly onto the stage, taking your place next to the big torchbearer who killed the beast earlier last night. He gives you a smile. He must be 20, or at least 19, he towers over you a good few feet, with a massive build. His name is Sten apparently.

"Kari" Asmund continues.

A raven haired girl, the one who was carrying the wounded creature, quickly comes running up,to join you. She's about your age, maybe a little older. She takes a firm stance next to Sten and you.

"The three of you are partners until the first portion of training is complete. The three of you will be sharing living quarters and training together. Head to your room now." Asmund says as he hands you each a key with a number on it. The three of you nod respectfully before walking off the stage and making your way to your room.

You have never felt so exhausted, both emotionally and physically. None of you talk on the way down to the room. You simply unlock the door and go to your separate bedrooms. You lay down on the bed and think about everything that's happened. You try to stay awake, but you can't help but drift into a deep sleep. Tomorrow will bring new challenges. Tonight you rest.

When will you run again?

Also ignore the NTR and weakness shitposters.

And with that I'm calling it for the night. I'm exhausted and in desperate need of a shower.

I hope to improve my writing as the quest goes on so please feel free to give criticism, I can take it I promise.

I don't know when I'll run again, but it will likely be sometime within the next week. I'm still trying to nail down a proper schedule, but university exams is making that a bit difficult.

Here's my twitter if you want to stay updated. https://twitter.com/ExcaliburQM

Hope everyone who took part has a wonderful day. Even the shit posters.

Thanks for the thread and double thanks for trucking through. It'll get better in the future, and then dip, but so long as you continue it'll always have a chance to get better. G'night Huntsman.

Yo leaving the harpy behind I 100% support because we are supposed to hunt beasts but you nerds couldnt make a rough bandage for her wings first? Even if she died afterwards its not a problem to us but if we carried the damn thing out of the woods full of spiders we should at least given the creature a chance to not bleed out after we left it there.

Buddha would not approve.
