You are Takashi Wakui, a sixteen year old Japanese high school student. In your world, half of humanity possesses a Persona—the corporeal manifestation of one’s personality as a supernatural entity. You had been an unlucky ordinary at first, lacking the potential to summon your Persona. Then the application AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. It sucked you into the nightmarish realm of the Blackened Void, where you fought monsters and awakened your Persona in the process.

You are now the Wild Card of the 22nd Century. You possess the Fool Arcana, giving you the power to draw strength from bonds and wield multiple Personas at once. Already this places you in great danger, as the Fool Arcana is seen as an impossibility by the common masses. Revealing your newfound power to the common world would immediately land your head on a dissection table. To make matters worse, you and several others have been cursed as the Void’s Chosen, fated to traverse the wastelands of the Blackened Void until the end of the game. For what purpose does AETHER exist, what mysteries lie within and how is victory achieved?

[7:30 am, 31-May-2129]

It’s dawn now. At least, that’s what the time on your smartphone screen tells you. Nothing of the sort exists in the steel and concrete wilderness that is the 0th Sector of the Blackened Void, the Forgotten City. No dazzling rays warm your face, for you stand beneath a vast stretch of grey and black, shifting but never dissipating. Your ears do not prick at the cries and screeches of the early morning rush; the streets are as still as the crematory box your father was buried in. The city is a decaying husk, unfit for life, populated by a monster in a human skin and a group of superhuman children. Instead of rolling over in your bed, attempting to drown out the warbles of the alarm clock by pressing your head against the pillow, you sit cross-legged in front of a guiding flame. There’s gravel up your shoes and your cheeks are rosy red from the heat.

This must be what camping feels like. Filthy, stiff, raw and in the end not all that worth it. How the children of the past century managed it, you do not know.

Though, there is one thing this morning has in common with all your previous ones. You’re pretty hungry right now. Also, you’re sure sleeping on a concrete floor isn't doing wonders for your hygiene and appearance. You’ll be kicked out of the academy grounds if you don't take a shower today.

“Awake, are you?”

You twist on the spot, grey dirt sliding down your trousers, and see Fumika walking over to you from one of the vendor doors, laptop in hand. Yep, it’s definitely her.
>>
“Good morning, Fumika.” You say, standing up.

“Good morning, Takashi.” She replies. Not a single flicker of emotion passes across those pale-cheeked features. No grouchy temper like Akikazu, no radiant enthusiasm like Celeste, no mild apprehension or curiosity like you. Her eyes scan across you, then towards the boy chained to the bonfire. Calculated, steady and robotic—as if she were a security camera sweeping across an empty office hallway.

“Will you be leaving soon?” she asks.

“Yeah.” You reply, stretching your arms and letting out a loud yawn. You don’t bother to cover with your hand. Part of you opens one eye to stare at her. Despite the obvious faux pas, she hasn’t reacted an inch. Celeste would have made a joking expression of disgust by now. “What about you?”

“I won’t be attending. Instead, I will continue to observe the subject for remainder of the day.” She discusses this in the tone most people would use to describe the weather on a dull day. You glance back at the various equipment set around the bonfire—miniature cameras, wires attached to pads, little steel boxes—then back to Fumika.

>“You better not try anything funny.”
>“He’s got a name, Fumika.”
>“I’ll leave it to you, then.”
>“This still feels like a violation of his privacy.”
>“Would it kill for you to not be so calm about everything?”
>“I’m coming with you. I did say it was my responsibility.”

Honestly, the more I look at it, the more I get a bad feeling about just killing him. From the beginning the game was rigged, and with the way his stats were described, I got a feeling he and others are being used to help us dehumanize our enemies.

Just get a bunch of lesser people, dehumanize them further and crank up their negative traits to 11 and BAM! Justified murder. Really, it's making me think this game is more about creating another Last Word than anything else.

There is not a single word of this that isn't perfect.

ON ANOTHER TOPIC. I've been doing some thinking, and it's pretty clear that there's only one way we're getting any information about that shit that went down.

Chikashi doesn't know, and if he/it did know, he/it wouldn't say anything, and I wouldn't trust the Twins as far as I could spit. The only possible source of information we have that we can trust even a little bit is the Observer, so I think we should complete Act Two of the Forlorn Abyss. Sooner rather than later, before a new player joins and the difficulty ramps up.

Also, we should make sure that what we have actually IS Chikashi and not some weird copy of him that AETHER made. Find out where he lives and see if he's there or if he's 'gone missing'.

I was also going to suggest that. In fact, I have a bunch of things I think we should do before doing Act Two.

>1. Check on Chikashi, see if he's fake or not.
>2. Find a more permanent way of holding him. Check the Build Terminal, which we haven't used in ages, just saying.
>3. At least try to question the Twins, so that we can say we did.
>3a. Think up some demeaning nicknames for them, see how they like it. "Thing One and Thing Two", "Tweedledum and Tweedledumbass", etc.
>4. Find Celeste's Companion, which also nets us some more loot and macca.
>5. Go to the Drama Club. We haven't been there in a while, and Justice Personas are always useful.
>6. Go to Martial Arts club. Learn new skills! Gain Willpower! Learn more about Takauji's lady problems! I think he might actually be gay, and afraid of telling the Kanas.
>7. Learn [Nerve Strike]. Get the plasma pistol repaired. Go to Shakedown March (the shopping district) and see if we can find some new boots. We're still using the pair we got in the tutorial, for fuck's sake.

Same could be said for going so blindly into murdering him. All it does is leave us in the dark, and not even knowing if the act did anything positive. Besides, it's damn hypocritical. The game is screwing over everyone equally and the powers that be are REALLY into us basically killing each other for power and experience. As the twins said, the game is rigged and I am sure they are going to push us one way or another to keep killing each other for personal gains.

For all we know, it could be Chikashi's Shadow we picked up and not the guy himself. Just throwing that possibility out there.

Then I suppose that makes Chikashi our Shadow.
>>
>>46465419
We use both in Savate
>>
>>46465510
It's probably safe to say that trying to think of these things in pre-established rules won't really help us out because all the game conventions are out the window
>>
>>46465510
Well we might have convinced Chikashi to not be shit in the real world, and that made his shadow go ape.
>>
>>46465477
That's a possibility, but it doesn't explain the Abomination's emergence. Doppleganger Shadows transform into monsters, not rip their monster form out of the human shape they're wearing. Similar situation with turning back instead of crawling back into the meat-suit. If it is a Shadow, there's something modifying it.
>>
>>46465510
Maybe Chikashi is what happens when the shadow wins and takes over the host
>>
>>46465529
>Chikashi's Shadow is us mocking him on his weakness

>>
>>46465510
Depends on which game you go by. Shadow Selves going berserk in response to rejection was P4, but P2 Shadow Selves could exist separate from their hosts and even summon their own Personas. It's hard to tell which aspects of SMT/Persona canon Thorn is trying to use.

>>46465529

Normally yes, but from his logs it seems that someone or something instigated the change.

>>46465511
I would risk containing him, finding out what he's been inflicted with, how to cure the illness so such a incident doesn't happen again, and then trying to find a lead on what caused it so the bugger doesn't do it again. Curing the symptom does not mean curing the disease and not knowing what it does can simply make things worse if handled poorly.

“I’m coming with you.”

“You intend to keep me company today.” Fumika doesn’t ask a question, she instead states the fact. Look deep enough into her, and you can detect the faintest traces of curiosity, veiled by a curtain of apathy and rigid calmness. “Are you not concerned about classes?”

“I said it was my responsibility, didn’t I?” You say, pointing to yourself. “I’m not about to give you another excuse to doubt my position as a leader.”

“Subtlety is a virtue that you seem to be lacking.” Fumika replies, dryly, “I suppose I could use a helper today. Go and refresh yourself, then. We have a lot of work to do.”

You roll your eyes. “You don’t have to boss me around.”

You leave the bonfire and enter the safehouse. Your school uniform lies on a bunk bed in one of the small bedrooms, folded in a neat pile just like your mother had taught you. Guess you won’t be using it today. You pick it up put it out of harm’s way on the top bunk.

You shower yourself in the bathroom, squeezing the last bit of chocolate-flavored shampoo from a pink plastic bottle. It’s pretty obvious who it belongs to. You don’t really care. She’s still got three other bottles stored away at the back of the dusty cupboard.

Breakfast consists of the remaining two instant noodle cups left in the fridge. Akikazu has left note on them, warning that anybody who dares to eat those without his permission better sleep with an ear cocked to their bedroom door. You pause for a moment, contemplating the likely outcomes of tearing open the lid and running it under boiling water. Shouting, threats of punches sinking in guts and lots and lots of foul language to grant him a thousand detentions.

Then you shrug and cook them anyway. Your stomach is a rabid prisoner flailing himself on the walls of his prison and you need to calm it the hell down. If Akikazu does comes charging at you like a mad bull, swear words tattooed on every patch of his skin, you can always placate him by buying that 24-pack of lamb curry ramen you saw in your local supermarket or whatever.

While you are plowing through the second cup, chicken and vegetables, someone messages you on your phone.

<chocolat_orange> morning, takashi-kun! it’s almost time to head off. are you ready?
<chocolat_orange> i’m coming to the entrance right now.
<THE_FIRST> Hey Celeste
<THE_FIRST> Uh
<THE_FIRST> I’m not coming to school today
<chocolat_orange> what? Why?
<THE_FIRST> Well Fumika isn’t either
<THE_FIRST> She wants to observe Chikashi for the remainder of the day
<chocolat_orange> so you’re staying back to keep watch on her?
<THE_FIRST> Pretty much yeah

<chocolat_orange> what on earth was she thinking? trying to murder someone who was innocent and unable to fight back…it was just wrong!
<chocolat_orange> i mean, that guy had tried to kill us, but that doesn’t mean we have to act the same way.
<chocolat_orange> i was watching her eyes as she talked to you, takashi-kun. they were so cold and hard. she wasn’t even considering what we might’ve thought about it, least of all your opinion. all she was focused on was completing her objective.
<chocolat_orange> it was like she doesn’t even care about us. no, i think i'm certain now. it makes me so irritated! we’ve fought side-by-side for the past month. shouldn’t that mean something? at the very least, casual acquaintances? apparently not, because i could hear the distaste she had towards me. as if i was a small child and she was the adult trying to push me away and let the grownups to their important things!
<chocolat_orange> here i thought she was just shy and that i was actually beginning to get closer to her.
<chocolat_ornage. gr…
<chocolat_orange> agh, i don’t understand, takashi-kun. what kind of world does she live in?

She has even less of an emotional range than Fuuka. If the Abomination got the Shadowrunning mercenary hacker to panic and freak the fuck out, then she obviously had a good reason to.

<THE_FIRST> Fumika was really spooked when she tried to scan Chikashi remember?
<THE_FIRST> She completely flipped out and it probably influenced her
<THE_FIRST> I’m willing to bet if that never happened she would’ve been a lot more calm about the whole deal
<THE_FIRST> She’s a Spotter
<THE_FIRST> And those guys deals exclusively with the mind
<THE_FIRST> Anything that interferes with that is going to make them freak the fuck out
<chocolat_orange> yeah, you’re right.
<chocolat_orange> i still don’t like her attitude though
<THE_FIRST> Well I think we can all agree on that
<THE_FIRST> The thing is Fumika is a mercenary
<THE_FIRST> And despite all the romanticism they get in movies or games
<THE_FIRST> They still kill people
<THE_FIRST> For missions for covering up trails and sometimes even for fun
<THE_FIRST> That’s probably what Fumika has done in the past
<THE_FIRST> I sort of knew that the moment she told us about herself
<THE_FIRST> But at the same time part of me didn’t want to admit it
<chocolat_orange> because you thought she was your friend?
<THE_FIRST> No it’s not that
<THE_FIRST> It’s
<THE_FIRST> Murder you know
<THE_FIRST> Taking somebody’s life isn’t a joke
<THE_FIRST> I can’t imagine myself doing that
<chocolat_orange> me too…
>>
>>46466298
>I can’t imagine myself doing that
I bet those invaders would like to agree.
>>
>>46466331
Well, if the game documentation can be trusted, those first Invaders were just NPCs to get us used to the concept and weren't actual players. So not really people.
>>
>>46466331
Simple we K.O. them, nick their stuff, and tie em up. Then wait for the idol to wear off.
>>
>>46466391
Honestly, thinking about invaders there are probaby ways to cheese the system slightly. For an invader to go back, they either must win, be defeated or use a charred idol. Perhaps there is a way to force the third option? Make them use the idol? Likewise, for invading our goal is to defeat the enemy, not so much killing, but defeating them. Surrender could lead to that option.
>>
>>46466331
I wonder if we could actually use a Burnt Idol to go to another AETHER session and then try to communicate with the Players there instead of fight them. Compare notes about AETHER, see what sort of world they're coming from, that kind of thing.

>>
>>46466464
This game runs on Dark Souls rules. In Dark Souls, invaders don't talk.
>>
>>46466489
We also know that if we're killed while invading another session we'll be returned to our own world instead of dead forever, but instead of assuming the same is true for others everyone seems to have this idea in their head that we're about to turn into murderers.

Seriously there is a lot of theories going around compared to how much people have actually paid attention
>>
>>46466489
Can they block tapping on the ground in morse code?
>>
>>46466539
The player, in this instance, has to be willing to go far enough to remove the invader that, if they were dealing with a real person from their world, they actually would die. Even though you didn't actually kill the invader, you may as well have.
>>
>>46466547
I honestly wouldn't even be surprised.
>>
>>46466539
I'm sorry, I must be misremembering: When were we told that dying during an invasion just sends us home? I'm looking at the thread where the invasion mechanics were introduced and I'm not seeing it. It does reference how "killing other players is a great sin" a bunch of times, though, so actually killing one must be possible.
>>

<THE_FIRST> Yeah thanks
<THE_FIRST> See you

>>Takashi: Go back to Fumika.

You return to the bonfire. Fumika is sitting on the ground, staring at the screen of her laptop, which is balanced on her knees. Information from the equipment attached to Chikashi —numbers, digits, technical jargon and words you cannot begin to make the slightest bit of sense of—is streaming into the computer at a fast rate. You can’t help but feel a bit of enmity at it, mostly because your equipment broke in the fight and Fumika pawned them off to Quinn in order to pay for her tools.

“How’s it going?” You ask, taking a seat next to her.

“As well as it gets.” Is her short reply. “The subject has not moved for the fifteen hours since his chaining to the bonfire. His heart levels are also similar to those as a patient in a coma. Response to stimuli, such as light or sound, have all failed. The chances of it regaining consciousness in the near future are slim.”

>“You’re excited about this, aren’t you?”
>“Would it kill for you to show some emotions at times?”
>“Fumika, we need to talk about your past.”
>“Why are you so quick to dehumanize him?”
>“You are seriously creepy, you know?”
>Sit in silence.

>It does reference how "killing other players is a great sin" a bunch of times, though, so actually killing one must be possible.
That's probably what happens if Takashi invades and kills the host. THAT is an actual kill. If the host "kills" the invader, the invader is merely banished.
>>
>>46466609
Wait, never mind, I found it:
>What happens to the losing side depends on whether or not it consists of the invader or the invaded. Invading red phantoms who lose will be sent back to their world and accumulate three quarters of the damage they received while invading. It is likely that this will kill a Player.
So it both sends you back and kills you, unless you were taken out with care.
>>
If this runs on Dark Souls wouldn't defeating/'killing' just banish the invader back to their home world?

“You’re excited about this, aren’t you?” You say.

She turns to face you. “Are you not?”

“No. I know our expressions are completely the same but there’s a difference between us.” You respond, resisting the urge to raise an eyebrow or do something as equally as silly. “Why would I be excited about watching the comatose form of somebody who I knew but is now a monster?”

“Because it is a creature unlike anything encountered on Earth?” Fumika questions. “One wonders why you are not more enthusiastic about it.”

“For someone who claims to be enthusiastic, you sure don’t seem like it.”

“It would get in the way of my work and is such unnecessary.” She looks back to the monitor. “Hmm…subject’s heart levels continue to be constant. Perhaps I should scan it again with Moros. Something might have changed between the time I last did so.”

“That’s another thing.” You argue. “Why are you so quick to dehumanize Chikashi?”

“Because it is no longer human. Therefore, there is no need to refer to it as one. Did we not cover this yesterday?”

“I just saying, you’re being too hasty in this. You know, like how you reacted on the overpass. What if he wakes up and starts talking like a normal person?”

“And as I said yesterday, there is no trace of humanity left in the subject’s soul. Moros told me as such. Do you not trust this information?” You see her purse her lips, by a fraction of a centimetre. Something flinty and small has appeared in her eyes.

“Fumika, that’s not what I’m talking about.”

“You aren’t a Spotter, so you cannot see things from my perspective. Very well, would you like me to relay the information directly into your brain? You may experience a great mental shock, but if you’re truly that desperate then it would not matter that much.”

You throw your hands up in the air and give up. The way she is now, not even the greatest of debaters could make her budge from her iron throne.

>>Takashi: Spend the rest of the morning with Fumika.

Most of it consists of you watching Fumika perform a series of tests on Chikashi. Heart rate, electrical pulses, signs of movement, breathing and more. She breaks out a medkit and sticks a fat syringe into him, drawing out a sum of blood. Despite Fumika plunging the needle all the way down to the muscle, there is no reaction from the boy. He doesn’t cry out in pain or break into tears, which is what you did when you had to get that influenza shot as an eight year old kid. He is slumped, restricted by the heated chains, seeing blackness and hearing an empty void.

“Hey, have you fed him yet?” You realize. “Guy’s probably hungry.”

“I injected supplements of nutrients into him. That should be enough to keep him going.”

“…I think this might count as some form of cruelty. I haven’t studied law enough, but I’m sure starvation is against a basic human rule.”

“I wish you wouldn’t make me keep repeating myself. Despite its appearance, this thing is not a human. It is a wild beast and deserves to be treated as one.”

“Fine…whatever…”

“I’m glad you understand. Besides, the subject shows no sign of starvation. It hasn’t shown much of anything at all.”

“So, you said you scanned him again. Did the interference disappear?”

“Most of it, yes. I have access to all its affinities, skills and talents.” She pauses. “Its soul holds no Arcana.”

“Oh, you mean like newborn children?”

“And like animals. Though, in its place is a field called ‘Race’, which has the word ‘Abomination’ written next to it.”

Race. That was what the robot boss in Area 019 and the monsters in Act 1 of the Forlorn Abyss possessed. You groan and shake your head.

“Damn, more and more mysteries…”

[11:30 am, 31-May-2129 (TUESDAY)]

Lunch time arrives and you grow hungry again. Instant noodles aren’t the most filling of meals, after all. All carbohydrates and no proteins. You wonder how Akikazu manages to sustain himself with such paltry meals.

“Takashi, I have another task for you.”

“Quit talking to me like I’m your subordinate. It's rude.” You grumble. “Anyway, what is it?”

She hands you a laptop. This one is smaller, and how its casing is worn and dented, it’s also quite old. Flipping it open reveals scratches on the mousepad and dust on the monochrome keys. “I want to test the Internet connection between this realm and the real world. This laptop doesn’t have AETHER installed on it. Go outside and I will message you.”

“Where do you want me to go?”

“Anywhere is fine.”

Basically this, it's been almost a real-life month since we saw Aria on her megacliffhanger and yet this arc doesn't really seem to have an end in sight. Also, we've got a LOT of people on the Celeste bandwagon right now thanks to lewds so someone's gotta take the responsibility of illuminating the path to the Best Ending

Motherfucker, I already done did all that shit you just said

Pretty good. One piece of advice: make new paragraphs whenever a new speaker has dialogue. Makes it much, much easier to read. An example (and my favorite part):

>“Ooooh, Takashi, you’ve been making a lot of foreign female friends lately, could this be…wait, did you say your name was von Wittelsbach?”
>Aria looked down. “Y-yes.”
>Before he could even turn around to look at her, Shizuka’s instant reaction grabbed his attention. “Oh. Oh! Wow! Okay! Wow. Well. I uh, I’m gonna head on off to work! Okay, wow! You guys, uh…you two have fun! Okay! Bye!”

Honestly I wanted to have it done by today but pic related is all the schoolwork I've had to do in the last four days, plus what I've written of the story was done the two days before this, so right now I'm really burnt out on writing. I'd like to do more outside of this oneshot but honestly, we don't know enough about Aria at this point where I feel like I could elaborate on her character much more than this. So, hopefully part two next Sunday/Monday, part three+ eventually

For the most part, we our discomfort is from the fact that we don't really understand her thought processes, but that's something we can get over with enough time. But there's no reason not to trust her. Make no mistake, she is our spotter, and a spotter has to be truthful at all times and she knows that. Who would want a spotter you couldn't trust completely?

Go along with her plans, and see if we can figure out how she ticks later.

“Listen Fumika, you better not do anything stupid, alright?” You glare at her. “You know what I mean."

“Should you discover a corpse in place of the subject by the time you return,” Fumika responds, not batting an eyelid. “I will personally send you evidence of all the legal offences I have committed over my history as a mercenary, along with the address to the nearest police station.”

“I’m glad you understand.” You snarl, gripping the handle of the door leading to the exit with a little more force than your normal self would have liked.

The empty world is abandoned and reality is brought back into the light.

The taste of fresh city air, even if it’s mixed with decay and the scent of discarded tin cans in the alleyway, feels sweet to your lungs. You step out into the sunlight with a pleased smile on your face. You relish its comforting, soothing presence as it runs across the skin at the back of your skin and spreads the warmth down your back.

You then realize kids like you are supposed to be in school right now and slink away into a nearby crowd waiting at a traffic light. You’ll get into trouble if an authority figure spots you. Possibly. Maybe. The National Empire of Japan shouldn’t care about a single adolescent boy in one of its city. You cross the street and pray that a member of the academy staff isn’t on break today.

You board the underground metro and head to Shakedown March. The crowds are thick as ever. The cries of salespeople, mechanical or organic, mix with the jingles emitted from department stores, then churn with the frantic voices of female shoppers as they spot yet another bargain in the aisle. The area is hot, like the burger and chip meal you buy at a small stand, staffed by a woman who looks way too old to be doing this kind of job. You take off your jacket and find an empty bench to sit down and eat.

What are Celeste and Akikazu doing, you wonder, biting through four chips covered in tomato sauce at once. Listening to classes, taking notes, hanging out with Takauji and his lady friends biting at each other’s throats over the cafeteria table. That would be the same stuff as usual, you decide. Though without you there to mediate between them, you pray that no sharp implements are involved today.

Huh…

That reminds you. Thinking about Takauji made you think about clubs, which in turn drew your attention to a specific one: drama. You haven’t seen Kaz in a while. And drama club is fun, if a little nerve-wracking whenever you have to go on stage.

Maybe you should attend drama club this week…

You finish your meal and throw the garbage in a can. You then take out the laptop Fumika gave you. An email client is already waiting in an opened browser.

>Send me something.

…is what the email sent by Fumika tells you.

You think for a moment, then mash on your keyboard for a few seconds before clicking the arrow send button.

>>Seconds: Pass.

>Message received. It seems that it’s possible to communicate over the Internet between this world and the Blackened Void. I suspected this when I was using the terminal in the safehouse, but confirmation is always appreciated.

You type.

>You're not going to comment on how I literally sent you garbage?

She returns.

>No.

You send a few more messages to her before packing up and leaving.

Along the way to the train station, you pass through the center of a shopping mall. Tacky plastic displays, jewelry behind glossy windows and sample products all fly past your vision. Whistling a tune you heard on the train radio this morning, you walk past something large, ornate and rectangular and don’t give it a single thought.

Then your brain catches up with your eyes You skid to a halt, turn around and gape. You bolt back the way you came.

<THE_FIRST> Fumika
<THE_FIRST> You should see this
<THE_FIRST> It’s a door like the one we enter in District 5
<THE_FIRST> It’s in the middle of a shopping center but nobody is noticing it

<Azure Scholar> You’re right. Did this door exist here before?
<THE_FIRST> I don’t think so
<THE_FIRST> Then again I don’t come here often so it’s possible it might have always been here but we were just never aware of it
<THE_FIRST> It’s also wrapped in thick chains that are made of what I think is silver
<THE_FIRST> Either that or really shiny steel
<Azure Scholar> Incorrect. It is silver. Steel isn’t this lustrous.
<Azure Scholar> I remember you purchasing a silver key from Quinn.
<THE_FIRST> Yeah I did that a while back
<THE_FIRST> It’s still in my backpack though
<Azure Scholar> The question of why you carried a potentially rare and useful piece of equipment around instead of storing it in the safehouse is one I wish is answered in the near future.
<Azure Scholar> In any case, I will check Google Maps for any other ornate doors that might exist in this city.
<THE_FIRST> You think they’ll show up
<THE_FIRST> This does seem like something normal people can’t comprehend
<Azure Scholar> I could see the door in the photograph, so I believe this is similar. I shall now begin.

>>Fumika: Research.

<Azure Scholar> I have found a couple. There is one in the Silver Town, next to a semi-popular Chinese diner. Another is in the main plaza of Synth Central, close to the Lovely Eight maid café.

It almost sounds like the old soldier is enjoying himself – gleefully beating the stuffing out of his ancient enemy even as his own death potentially draws near. “Fear not!” he repeats boldly, “I will! Not! Crack!”

>>Takashi: Unlock the door in Shakedown March.

You slide the silver key into the lock and give it a good twist. The chains collapse to the ground like a sack of bricks dropping off from a construction site. There’s a loud noise and nobody but you notice. The mess then disintegrates into a pile of dust and is dissipated away by an invisible wind.

You open it and then you’re back in the Forgotten City.

“Welcome back,” says Fumika, in a tone that is contrary to her words. “Shall we resume with the experiment?”

>You can now travel to Shakedown March through the Forgotten City!
>Be on lookout for keys in the future…

[3:30 pm, 31-May-2129 (TUESDAY)]

You then spent the rest of the afternoon participating in Fumika’s experiment. The two of you barely spoke a word to each other. This will probably go down as one of the most boring periods of your life, right up there with everything that happened in middle school.

“And so it is concluded.” Fumika says, closing her laptop. “The subject is completely comatose, no matter what we do to it. Our only option is to bide our time and wait for it to regain consciousness.”

“What happens next?”

“I will continue to monitor it. Everything else will proceed as usual. You may resume your classes, Takashi.”

It looks like everything is done for the day. Is there anything you would like to say to Fumika before the two of you part ways?

>“Fumika, we need to talk. About you, I mean.”

“Fumika, we need to talk.”

She pauses, fully on her way to the safehouse door. “What is it, Takashi?”

“We need to talk.” You repeat. “About you?”

“For what purpose?” She asks.

You scratch your head. “It’s just…I never really had a chance to talk to you like I’ve done with Celeste or Akikazu.”

“You have conversed with me plenty of times.” She replies. “In fact, you have done so for the majority of this day.”

“You really think that? Because all I heard was a whole lot of silence from both us." You sigh. "Fumika, have you ever had a real conversation with somebody before?”

“Plenty of times with my teammates on missions.” She tilts her head to the side. “Is there a reason why you are asking this question?”

The urge to slam your palm in your face and leave a pink imprint on your nose is growing with every passing second. “No, I mean outside of your work.”

“I fail to see how this is relevant.”

“Look, just tell me about yourself.”

“I have already told you and the others about myself when I arrived at the safehouse for the first time.” She says. “Fumika Shibuya, student of Akumachi-Kirijo Academy, Spotter, computer security expert, of the Hermit Arcana with Moros as the Persona. What else is there to know?”

Jesus, banging your head against a solid brick wall would be less mind-numbing than this. “I mean, nothing professionally! What are your likes or dislikes? Tell me, Fumika.”

She stares at you for a second, before realization dawns upon her like a rush of wind descending down upon a fragile garden. “Ah, I see. You wish to interact with me socially.”

“Did you have to put that in the most clinical, scientific terms you could think of?”

“Accurate, is it not?” Fumika says. “That is your intention. Perhaps, to form a ‘friendship’. Unfortunately I believe you are out of luck.”

“Why?”

“Because I do not see any value in doing so.”

>“I think you are being an idiot.”

“That hurts, Fumika.” You say, and you mean it. “What the hell do you call our bond, then?”

“Fellow members of the Void’s Chosen. An understanding between competent Persona-users. Maybe to the extent of casual acquaintances.” She responds. “As a leader, I would even consider you to be somewhat adequate, given the way you stood against me and stuck to your principles. But whatever our relationship is, it is not ‘friendship’.”

“Fumika, the power of my Wild Card runs on emotional connections. If I feel a bond towards you, it means you have a bond towards me as well. You know this.”

“I most certainly do. It is certainly a stable one and one I am…satisfactory with.” Fumika acknowledges, nodding her head slightly. “I would not use the term ‘friends’ to describe it, however.”

“The fuck?” you blurt out. “Why not?”

“Because I have seen observed friendships before and my conclusion is that they are of little worth to me.”

“I admit, the way you have interacted with those individuals is a bit of an anomaly to me. However, you may very well be the exception that proves the existence of a rule.”

You stare at her. For the first time a long while, you are at a loss for words. To someone like you,

“Is there anything else you would like to say, or will this conclude our discussion?”

You swallow and try to untangle the garbled mess of disbelief, anger and confusion swirling around at the forefront of your mind. This is what you spit out like a mass of disgusting phlegm.

“Then why did you bother to talk to me in the library?”

“Ah, that.” She closes her eyes and thinks. “Because my parents were irritating and I needed a way to silence them.”

“Is there no friendships among mercenaries, Fumika?” You mutter, weakly.

“There have been what you described. I have seen what happens, and it gets strong men and women killed.” She replies, succinctly and curtly. “I think that shall be the end of it, Takashi. If you will excuse me…”

Without waiting for a response, she turns around and leaves. The conversation has ended, forcefully put to a stop by an emotionless blade. Your words are caught in the spider web forming in your throat. Silence is the fallout that remains. All you can do is watch the Spotter of the Void’s Chosen retreat further and further into the distance. She has won. Victory of the argument goes to her. There is nothing you can do.

So, does that mean she is correct? That her words have become justice?

You suppose so.

...

...

No...

NO.

This isn’t right. This isn't how things should have occured!

The fault doesn't lie on you, it is on her.

Fumika is wrong. Every nerve in your body is crackling with electricity, screaming this fact at you with the voices of thousands. Your blood is bubbling, your skin is burning. She may be the most intelligent member of the team, the one who always dispenses advice on the battlefield, the invaluable Spotter who has prevented you and your friends from meeting an untimely death at the hands of Shadows and someone who have formed bonds with. She is often right about a lot of things, from computers to mythology to tactics, but what you have discussed with her today is not one of them.

Everything she just said, from her first word to the very last, is utterly, unequivocally and completely wrong.

As the leader, you have to tell her that.

Raise your understanding and knowledge bros. She's the type who's aware she thinks differently than other people, and doesn't think anyone else will get her. She's emotionally walled herself off from others, and has resigned herself to that fact.

Find out more about her, get insight into how she thinks, and then try it again. Hell, since she doesn't find value in friendship, ask her what she does value. And damnit, I'm late.

“Fumika.” You state, your voice hard yet soft.

She stops, but does not face you. It is expected, yet it does not discourage you.

“Today, you enjoyed your time with me.” You state, “This is a fact; don’t even try to deny it. Even though you were silent, even though you were keeping on that cold mask like you always do, even though your actions were like a scientist examining a microbe under a telescope, I could tell that you were having your own strange version of fun. Do you know why? It’s because I’m the Wild Card and I’m susceptible to things like that.”

She still refuses to speak. However, her head is tilted upwards, so that the barest of eye contact is made. Submerged within, hidden by layers of apathy and distaste, is an ember of curiosity.

You take a deep breath. “You aren’t as emotionless as you think. You said that you wanted to shut your parents up, but doesn’t that mean part of you cared about them and wanted to let them know that you were doing alright at school?”

It's as if you have struck gold. Fumika has gone still, more so than usual. “I know you are lying to yourself, even if you can’t comprehend why. There is a part of you that get what bonds between friends are like. It’s small and pathetic, but it’ll grow and one day I’m sure you’ll come to understand it. It’s reason why I’ve got Koppa Tengu with me, after all.”

You can’t help but laugh. Talking about Personas like that...what are you, a fictional hero? Yet, you don't care. Your body is full of energy. You feel like you can say anything, no matter how melodramatic or badly worded, and it’ll somehow get across to the intelligent, apathetic, and lonely girl standing in front of her.

“So, I’m going to keep talking to you and speed up that process. In fact, I’d even go as far as to say that you might even prove what you said today wrong.”

You give her a small grin.

“How does that sound? It's my challenge to you, Fumika.”

Her lips curl.

“Do what you wish. It’s none of my business.”
