So I've been thinking about this for a long time as a little experiment. It may turn into a several thread thing, or it may just be a one off; either way hopefully people will like it. The twist on this civ is that your race starts off with a few set values ingrained in their culture/society/way of thinking. I'll post these in the next post.

You are the Derthas. You have stalked these tunnels for many years, but barely a generation or two ago something miraculous happened. A spark. A spark of sentience suddenly swelled within many of you, as though you were being moulded for some unknown purpose. An elder spider, the matriarch, soon discovered the deep wells of psionic power within her mind, and with this power, she reached out to other nearby Derthas and began to deal with them, bargaining for their allegiance with knowledge and territory. The spiders keep in telepathic contact with one another, but almost never meet besides mating. With just about a dozen spiders at her command, she prepares for whatever fate has in store for this small 'nest'.

Population:
1 Elder Spider
12 Adult Spiders

Building materials:
None

Environment:
A deep, dark web of tunnels

You may:

>Explore (Seeking prey, materials, other sentients, knowledge, etc)

>Reproduce (Create hatchlings, chances of losing the adult male due to spider post mating cannibalism)

>Construct (Repair discovered buildings or construct new ones [requires materials])

>Experiment (Work on your psionic capabilities, technology or other such things)
>>
The values of your people are as follows: Your people approve of learning and knowledge, value instinct, or being reactive. They see bargaining or compromise as a highly intelligent solution to a problem, if applicable. Self-defense and taking your own initiative is applauded, though you should make sure to plan for the future. Hatchlings are left to work stuff out for themselves, but if they prove capable of surviving and entrepaneuring, then they become a valued member of society. Derthas loathe stupidity, hesitation, being non-negotiable or just plain old being weak. They do not value the physical form, believing instead that if one should die, they will simply return again in a superior body. These things are what they base their morality upon.

You may also suggest options. Don't roll unless I call for one, when that happens I'll take best of three (though a 100 or a 1 will overrule others). I also forgot to give some biological details, considering we're going with spiders.

Your people are very strong, tough, and very intelligent, though other races may find you abhorrent. You are stealthy and expect climbers (only need a check to climb in extreme circumstances), you are very fast in short bursts, and can also burrow if you need to, forging new passageways and tunnels. You have a nasty bite that can deliver a strong paralytic venom through the saliva. You can see perfectly in the dark, but are dazzled a bit in strong light.

Your spiders hunt... And though the tunnels today appear empty, but at least there was nothing dangerous lurking around, besides your own giant arachnids, anyway. The hunters did come back with a small amount of food from some small subterranean creatures, it wasn't much in the grand scheme of things.

You may:

>Explore (Seeking prey, materials, other sentients, knowledge, etc)

It would be an good idea to set up a home from which to spider safely before we start spidering too hard.
>>
Explore in search of other sentients.
>>
>>46507373
>Construct (Repair discovered buildings or construct new ones [requires materials])
First, find food.
Then, secure food, maybe build a reliable food source. Probably get some cattle or something like that.

And then, start reproducing. Once that too is secured, experiment.
>>
>>46507392
looks like we need building materials to construct, unless OP lets us make webs.

I vote to Explore more
>>
>>46507440
I would allow basic construction with webs.
>>
>>46507485
Webs requires food to make, it's very demanding on the spider's body.
We need to get more food and find a way to conserve it, because meat spoils very quickly and I doubt spiders can find or even consume salt.
And I doubt the spiders are vegans in that story.
>>
>>46507373
Explore
Although building would be nice, the only thing we got to use is webbing, and that requires food/energy to produce.

Some of your hunters return with large chunks of webbed meat after a day or two of hunting. It would appear that after tracking prints in the dust on the floor, they managed to find the lair of some large serpents, for whom they laid a webbing trap for. It paid off, and many of the small bestial dragons fell prey to the Derthas, and your people are thoroughly nourished for the month to come, the remainder of the meat preserved slightly within the web.

You may:

>Explore (Seeking prey, materials, other sentients, knowledge, etc)

They would not be called houses by any other race's standards, but to the Derthas they were perfect. They were more like big, sprawling nests of webbing that housed each individual spider within the group (separately, however, as placing the spiders too close to one another is the fastest way for conflict between them to arise). These nests help improve morale and the feeling of security within the Derthas, and as an added bonus, the sprawling nests often catch smaller creatures, giving each spider it's own small supply of food, meaning even the glowing spider has some form of food intake.

>These small morsels of food are enough to sustain the spiders, meaning you no longer need to hunt to keep your people alive that way. However, you will still need more food to make anything out of webbing, meaning you'll need to hunt prior to making a construct action when using your web.

The spiders mate successfully, and even luckier is the fact that none of the adult males were cannibalised during this process, all of whom managed to escape without harm. Several hundred eggs are laid, but only 72 of them will reach adulthood alive (that being said, some may have survived only to flee, etc). They will become adults within 5 turns.

In a heightened state of awareness due to all the hatchlings, some of the Derthas begin to notice occasional noises, like shuffling, from the other side of a particular tunnel wall...

You attempt to find a way to the other side of the tunnel wall via tunnels, but you don't seem to be able to find an entrance. One of the Derthas carefully scrapes his way through to the other side of the wall, effectively burrowing through. As soon as he breaks into the other side he retreats instinctively, several burning sticks mounted on the cave wall burning into his eyes. He hisses and clicks, before slowly crawling back in, letting his eyes adjust to the dim torchlight. He is in some kind of corridor, there are dead.. things on the ground here. They are humanoid in shape, but resemble bats. They appear to have been killed, but the Derthas finds it strange they have been left uneaten. They wear padded cloth armour, which seems weird and unusual to the spider. Upon investigating the corpses further, it appears that though each one was killed in similar, yet different ways, each one appears to have had some kind of sharp instrument rammed into their skulls, just to be safe.

You are in an event mode now. Normal turns will return after the event is complete. What would you like your spider to do?

The spider drags the corpses back to his nest and strings them up in his web. You gather several adult spiders and go to the corridor, where you construct several tripwires. The spiders are uncomfortable having to share space with each other, but they're putting up with that, for now. Your spiders are currently standing in the corridor. One of the spiders notices that the distant end of the corridor has caved in, but the other end turns a corner at some point, and from then on it's path is unknown. What do you want to do?

>The spiders are uncomfortable having to share space with each other
So what, we have a civilization of loners?
>>
A couple of spiders wait at the entrance, whilst others investigate both ends of the tunnel. The cave in appears to have caught some other creatures in it, different to the ones you took before. These creatures have whiskers and fur, longish mouths, and though they are humanoid, they have a hunched form, as if they walk everywhere on either two or four legs depending on the situation. They look to be much more dexterous than you or the bat-people, and the slightly webbed hands and feet seem to point to something of an aquatic lifestyle. They wear armour made of dried... plants? You're not entirely sure what it is. They were wielding spears, but besides that, nothing else. On the other end of the tunnel, three spiders stealthily scout around the corner. They come to some stairs, and heading up them, they notice that there a few more bat-people corpses. Upon reaching the top of the stairs, they discover the ruins of an old hallway, there's signs of battle here, but no more corpses. The eastern wall of this hall has been completely blasted away by something, leaving it open to the world outside. A starry night is above you if you venture outside.

You have reached the surface.
>>
>>46518555
Send the glowing spider first as a scout. She won't be too blinded by the light of the outside.
>>
>>46518553
Most spiders are solidarity as they are predators in nature and need their own turf.
>>
>>46518553
Effectively, yes. About the only saying the Derthas have at the moment is: "It is good to be in touch, but it is bad to be touched."
>>
>>46518572
And yet we're trying to build a civilization with them.

This is going to end badly.

>>46518575
YOU MUST
DESTROY THE INDIVIDUAL
THE COMMUNITY COMES FIRST
>>
i dont think they can turn into hive mind but instead like a feudal kingdom with lords, knights and shits have theirs own armies and lands
>>
>>46518583
We arent THAT Marxist, I suggest we return to our caves and puah out our borders to the entrance
>>
Fun fact:
All spider's have venom in their saliva at least technically as it contains enzymes to breakdown tissue into fluids.
>>
So guys, do we have a consensus with what you're doing?

>>46518570
It is currently night, and there is no moon in the sky, just stars, so it's no brighter than the torches in the corridor.

>Anything brighter than this would be a pain to you though.

>>46518583
They aren't so much loners as they are territorial. Anybody encroaching on their space is liable to be killed and eaten, just for being there. Plus, you effectively have a huge telepathic link to each other so you can talk without ever needing to meet (besides when mating occurs).
>>
>>46518725
We should probably seal off the surface exit. Wouldn't want anyone accidentally wandering in before we're ready to consume them.

Also see about returning the newly found bats and those... aqua-men to the webs. With any luck, there are more of them beyond the cave-in.
>>
>>46518725
So basically zergs or tyranids that are just less focused on taking over the world and more on living "peacefully".
>>
>>46518754
Well surely we decide how "peaceful" we want to be
>>
>>46518754
I say focus on this cave system instead of surface. Kill all the other sapiens.
>>
>>46518794
no, align with the batgirls, breed flying driders
>>
>>46518813
Flying in cave? nah. Better go with aquatic diving spiders.
>>
>>46518825
no, flying for the surface scouts, and we can always dig into some kind of chasm network, the underground isn't necessarily solid.
>>
>>46518846
we cant see very well in daylight and also in other condition as we lived on cave, mostly depends on touch sensory. The scouting would run bad.
>>
>>46518856
no, we'd have flight and bat's sonar, screeching, flying driders
>>
>>46518856
Clearly the solution is to make slave races of the bats and fishmen.

Only we call it "In-friend-tured servitude".
>>
>>46518747
So we have a suggestion of sealing off the surface exit and taking the corpses back to the nests. Anybody have any objections or counter suggestions to this?
>>
>>46518870
scouting on what terrain? the sonar wouldn't work well in differentiating creatures based on sizes and movement only. Btw, how can we guide ourselves if cant see well? Sonar need large and well enough obstacle to work as landmark
>>
>>46518902
We hate the surface, it is for the weak.
>>
>>46518902
No objections here
>>
>>46518902
I think we should experiment for a while to devise a way of communicating with non spiders, then try a search for sapients
>>
>>46518961
We can do that once we have the corpses, though.
>>
>>46518972
yeah, check their belongings too they may have useful stuff that doesn't require hands.
>>
>>46518961
They are inferior, non-chitinous, vegetarian lifeform that huddle and lives together. They don't respect privacy and fight in group which does not promote individual bravery and valor.
>>
The spiders burrow through the earth above the stairs (but underneath the hall), causing it to collapse down upon the entire entrance to the tunnels. You can always burrow back through, now you know the way. For now though you take the bodies back to the nest like the others.

Do you wish to do anything else before ending the event?
>>
>>46518994
My chitinous brother, you are mistaken.

Yes, they roam in groups, yes, they depend on their peers, but does that make them inferior?
yes.

but does it make them worth of disdain? no. We stand alone, 8 legged and mighty, but these poor thing struggle along on 2 legs, is it really so surprising they would fight with 3 other bipeds at their side? no, for it is our way as well.
>>
>>46518994
>They don't respect privacy and fight in group which does not promote individual bravery and valor
HERESY

>>46519017
What's the current situation? Do we have enough food for everyone?
Yeah, sorry, I'm obsessed with that.
>>
>>46519017
check the bodies, they might have just been sedated and then not coccooned for some reason. A living biped would be worth studying, or serve as a way of keeping it's meat fresh if a hunt should fail.
>>
>>46518984
A few of them have books, but these seem to have been specifically targeted by the spears of the aquatic folk for some reason. Besides this, nothing of worth is found.

>>46519061
However, closer inspection of one of the bodies reveals something interesting; it's wounds are... healing. Very slowly, but you think this one might still be alive.
>>
>>46519061
Not to mention we must master at least one of these two : memory wipe, or mind control.
That way, we'll ensure nobody will come down here until we have a flourishing empire.
>>
>>46519017
I think that's about it.

>>46519052
We get enough small bugs caught in the webbing of our homes to sustain us.
>>
>>46519037
I may not be the Chitinous Brother to who you speak but these bipeds are our rightful prey.

We Derthas hunt alone. We Derthas walk alone. We derthas live alone.

What these squishy prey-beasts don't understand is. We Derthas rule alone. Our cave. Our lairs. Our prey.

We will not accept this incursion.
>>
>>46519077
Oh boy. Wrap it up and gag it before it wakes up.

Your people practice their abilities, and it seems to pay off. When the creature wakes, you're pretty confident you'll be able to establish some kind of mind-link with it, perhaps you could even influence it's emotional state somewhat, in order to relax it a little.

The creature seems flustered by the mind(s) in it's head. It takes a moment to compose itself, before responding in a series of thoughts, sounds and images.

The thing just got captured by giant spiders. Something that eats meat to survive. It's calm because we aren't eating it or torturing it currently.

We could have atleast bluffed into saying "You aren't like other batkins. Tell me why are you in our territory?"

Questions like that give room for slip ups in the batkin's answer. Could allude to it being alone or in a community. It's motives like hunting or exploring. In which case hunting is mostly non-consequential but exploring could very well mean a bat kin community nearby looking to expand.

And that if his answers are satisfying, it may go free, but that you're not going to free it until you know about its ability. It may try to murder you the second it's freed.
>>
>>46520576
>lets just see how well you can regenerate then muhahaha

>inject him with venom
>>
>>46520722
Not venom.
Acid. Some spiders use it to turn the organs of the captured bugs into liquid stuff they can drink.
Let's see if he's still an arrogant obnoxious little shit once its leg melted.

Try and make him believe there are hatchlings in his cocoon.
>>
>>46520775
I'd say give up with the interrogation and start psychically experimenting on it.
It already proved it has no idea of its current situation, and is stupid enough to believe it can imposes its term to us, so just experiment psychic stuff on it.

But it'll kill it. We need to make it understand it cannot negociate.

btw, bump limit reached

for all the people getting it wrong
poison = for attack, for example injecting/spraying it
venom = for defence, a venomous butterfly for example cant use its venom but when other's eat it they feel its effect and thus learn not to eat that type of butterfly.
>>
>>46520907
Sorry, I had to help with laundry.

Your venom is only paralytic. You have acid as an option but it is still quite slow.

I'm probably going to go with this >>46520790 unless people object.
>>
>>46520994
Actually, you're getting those the wrong way around. That's why you have venomous snakes but not poisonous snakes.

really? well, i dont remember where i got info so i guess i'll take your word for it.
>>
>>46521020
You also have naked snake, liquid snake, and solid snake.

"Don't try and fool me, there are no children," The Waiyashan replies, "Not near, at least. But if it is food you are after, then perhaps there's something that would benefit us both. You seem to have no qualms about eating me, so the Rhumailen shouldn't be a problem either. If you let me live, if you take me back to where you found me... I can tell you everything you want to know, including the location of a large base of Rhumailen. Even if you don't want to eat them, they have good stores of food, definitely some things you could make use of, no?"

>I will likely have to go and grab dinner soon guys. If we get this interrogation done and the turn finished in the thread, we can call it a night from then and I'll pick up the civ again at some point if people liked it.

>>46521189

I guess we could at least trust him as far as we can throw him. If not, we simply know to consume any Waiyashan in the future.
>"We will agree, hoping that Olziytomor of the Waiyashan does not dissuade our trust."
Return him to where we found him and allow him to go free, though under watchful eyes.

As you return him, he fills you in on the machinations of those who live on the surface. Well, and those who don't. It turns out that the Waiyashan live below ground also, and within the mountains of Ardachaid, a mountain chain that runs the length of the continent. The Waiyashan have a large empire, ruled by the Eternal Emperor. For many centuries, the Rhumailen were the slaves of the empire, until recently, when they rebelled against the Waiyashan. The Waiyashan eventually relented, and allowed the Rhumailen to have their freedom, but 50 years later, the Rhumailen formed the Tailem Empire in the island chain known as the Lekhoussa, and began waging war against the Waiyashan. It also tells you that it believes you are intelligent because of something unleashed by a race known as the Neankalla. It says that the Neankalla have been meddling ever since the war broke out, and for some reason, intelligent races have begun popping up everywhere, and they believe this is due to them.

Besides the Derthas, the Neankalla, the Waiyashan and the Rhumailen, there are also Drakes, but besides those, the only intelligent races are those slowly popping up here and there, who are in a state much like your own; new and still learning of the world.

He said he would answer any questions you have, what else would you like to know?

Ask it if there's a chance you can live quietfully underground without anyone bothering you or if it's hoping too much.
Don't tell you hate light, but say you're not really interested in the surface.
>>
>>46521777
The only one's who may bother you underground are the Waiyashan themselves, but besides them he doesn't seem to think there are any other races that might interfere.

Besides dragons. Be careful of dragons. Especially dragons.

But if you are careful not to intrude upon the Waiyashan or the dragons, you should be fine. In fact, both can be reasoned with, and both may very well strike deals with you if you are willing to be cooperative and not take their stuff.
>>

They are a fully fledged medieval era empire (with a chinese or mongolian theme going on), and have things to trade that would be fitting of that. You on the other hand probably don't have much to offer them, yet. The Rhumailen are still in the stone age by comparison to the Waiyashan, but they have numbers and a strange affinity for runes, which the dwarfs have never been able to work out.

Feel free to continue asking questions, besides this event though, you still need to decide what you wish to experiment with for this turn.
>>
>>46521852
>>46522061
on the subject of capitalism
we should ask Olziytomor what the Waiyashan's would be willing to trade for high-quality spider silk/webbings.
>>
>>46522086
He will have to go and ask a superior, if you are making an official offer, and for that, you will need to meet with somebody with the authority to negotiate on behalf of the empire.
>>
>>46522065
What about silk? Could you sell some to them?

>>46522152
You're also willing to take their prisoners away from them.

Also, ask if they know how any underground cattle. We need to be at least self-sufficient on food, should the unthinkable happen.
>>
>>46522176
Actually, yes. Silk and webbing is an option. If you want, we could start the next thread by meeting with a Waiyashan negotiator? Not now though, I'm in need of a break I think.

Can we decide on what you're experimenting this turn, just to close off the round nicely before it drops off the board? Once you decide I'll need 1d100's.
>>
>>46522249
Maybe a way to shield our vision from light. Prevent it from being used against us, as well as allowing us to establish a foothold on the surface.

After some hard work, one of the adult spiders manages to discover a way to alter one's body to adapt to harsh circumstances. Over time, the other spiders barter and deal with each other until the use of this ability spreads to even the hatchlings. This ability can be used to shield your eyes from the sun, currently, but if worked on further it can protect from all hostile environments, such as the heat, the cold, or the suffocating.

And that concludes this round. I'm not sure when the next thread will be, as I'm at a concert with my girlfriend over the weekend and I'm not sure of my shifts next week, but when I know I'll announce it on the civ general. I hope you've all enjoyed the first thread!

ultra-capitalistic giant psychic spiders? It was pretty good, and very different from the other civs.

>>46522654
yes but giant sized could mean anything, a giant spider could be the size of a dog or the size of a horse, and either one would be strong enough to do what we have so far done.

Reincarnation story with game mechanics to boot, the current fad in Japan. A shitty niche genre in general, but this series is one of the few good ones. Original is the web novel.
