"Ummm" You say. "Excuse me"

Kieve and Fran stop talking, and turn to you. "What is it?" Fran asks, after she cools off for a second.
"Do you have that thing you were working on?" You ask Kieve.

"Right! Of course" Kieve says. She hops back to her desk and points to a stack of papers. "I wrote down everything I could find... here... and you can't read"

Kieve hangs her head, as Emi slithers over to the desk. "What were you researching?" Emi asks.
"Your friend, or rather his strange way of being" Kieve says. "Fascinating stuff"

"What did you find?" You ask.
"Other than the fact that Malieria and Caian are the only recorded Chaotics... I also remembered that there's a book in the Imperial library, left behind by Caian himself, outlining how his own powers work"

"Could I see that book?" You ask
"Possibly... if you could get into the Imperial library" Kieve says.
"Can I get in there?" You ask.

"Not a possibility right now" Fran says. "Leon is locked down at the moment"

"Aww..." You say.
"And even if it weren't, I doubt they'd let you through the gates anyway..." Fran says.
"Why not?" You ask.
"Because you're a... uhh..." Fran says. "you know..."

"Because of what he is?" Emi asks.
"Yes" Fran says. "You know"

Kieve leans on her desk, and adjusts her glasses with her foot. "I don't follow, what is he?" She asks.
"He's... uhh..." Fran says.
"Oh!" Kieve says. "Is he a pure demon?"

"Well... I mean he is-"
"Yes" You say.
"You are?" Emi asks. "How do you know that? I've never heard that term before"

"That lady called me that" You say. "The one from Sherton"

Kieve looks about ready to burst. "You there, Serpid... uhh... What's your name?" She asks.
"Emi" Emi says.
"Help me with something. I've got an entire other stack of papers down here" Kieve says.

"Is Yuu being a pure demon important?" Fran asks.
"Absolutely" Kieve says. "There have only been 2 known pure demons throughout history. Can you guess who they were?"

"Caian and Malieria?" You ask
"Caian and Malieria" Kieve repeats. "Both pure demons. Both Chaotics. Just like Yuu"
Fran looks curious now. "You think that they're connected?" She asks.
"Yes" Kieve says. "At least, it's too much to be a simple coincidence"

Fran and Kieve retreat into one of the aisles of bookshelves, having forgotten that they were arguing not 5 minutes ago...

"Ummm..." Emi says. She still has a fairly large stack of papers in her hands. "What do I do with this?"

Everytime someone has talked about what Yuu is there was zero sense of the usual lack of knowledge, Yuu has always been 100% sure he was a pure demon since it was first brought up. That might not be him caring and him just instinctually knowing though

"It sounds weird" Lily says. She has her ear pressed against your chest, where your heart would be.
"You sound weird" You reply.
"You check it out, Daisy" Lily says as she takes her head away.

Then Daisy puts her head on the same spot. Her horn jabs you a bit, but it's not like it's sharp or anything. "Sounds like... a river" She says.
"Does it?" Emi asks.

Daisy moves her head away, and Emi takes her place. "Hmm... not a river..." Emi says. "More like ocean waves"
"How does it normally sound?" You ask.
"Like this: Ba-dump. Ba-dump" Lily says.

"What does mine sound like?" You ask.
"Umm... like... Chrhrhrhrhr. Chrhrhrhrhrhr" Lily says.
"You're bad at that" Daisy says.
"Well you try it then" Lily replies.

As the girls begin their... sound-effect off?... you turn to Emi. "Think Derrick and llica are waiting for us?" You ask.
Emi glances at the clock... timekeeper. "It has been a little while..." Emi says.

Kieve pops her head out from behind a bookcase. "If you guys are looking to go, you can take those notes I made" She says. "Everything you need to know should be in there"
"Oh" You say. "Okay... I guess"

"Are you kidding? You've breathed new life into these old bones" She says. "Everyone in my position has been looking for a big breakthrough in this kind of stuff, and you've come along and given it to me"

"We are" Emi says.

Lily and Daisy run around the bookshelf, and drag Fran out a few seconds of chatter. "Alright, alright" Fran says. "Yes, I guess I got a little carried away..."

You walk over and take the stack of pages off of Kieve's desk. They aren't as heavy as they look.

"Are we good to go?" Emi asks.
"Yeah" You say. "Are you guys coming with us?"
"The girls want to say goodbye" Fran says, as she turns to Kieve. "I'll finish up with this, drop these 2 off at the hall and then come back"
"I'll be here" Kieve says.

With that, the five of you head back downstairs. When you reach the first floor, Fran sinks into the ground.

You feel the devil's tails wrapping around your forearms, since your hands are full... of pages that you can't read...

Emi leans over your shoulder to look at the papers, taking the top sheet to examine it more closely.

"This actually isn't that advanced" Emi says. "It looks like Kieve simplified things quite a bit. If you want me to, I can show you how to read on the ride to Sherton"

"Okay. I guess I won't have to pet Ilica this time" You say.
Emi giggles. "I hope not, at least" She says. "Though it sounds like Derrick was hoping he could teach her how to drive the cart, so he isn't the only one"

"You can't drive?" You ask.
"Carts have 2 pedals. I have one thing to press them with" She says. "fitting onto that front seat would be a hassle too..."
"Can I drive?" You ask.
"Not a mana powered cart, no..." She says. "The one we have could probably be converted, but it'd be easier just to let Derrick or Ilica drive"
"Aww..." You say.

"Can I learn to drive when I grow up, Mommy?" Lily asks.
"Me too! Me too!" Daisy says.

The eyes in the shadow look around, and then Fran's head pokes out of the ground. "We'd need a cart first" She says. "Your father and I have been considering it, now that they're becoming cheaper. So... probably"

"Yay!" The girls say. Their tails squeeze your arm as they bounce up and down.

Lily and Daisy both look back at you with a curious expression. "Why?" Lily asks.

The two of them turn away and ponder your question. While you wait for their answer, another question pops into your head.

"What happened between you and Kieve?" You ask Fran.
"You have... no attention span, do you?" Fran asks.
"What's that?" You ask.

"Nevermind..." Fran says. "Kieve and I had a... disagreement once Lance and I started to get serious"

"What kind of disgreement?" You ask.
"I wanted to marry Lance... she didn't want her son getting married to a Devil..." She says.
"But you guys got along before we left" You say.

Fran snorts. "Kieve is fine with having a Devil as a research partner, but it seems she draws the line at having one as a family member" She says.
"So why didn't Lily or Daisy know about her?" You ask.
"I sort of... assumed she would hate them" Fran says.
"Why?" You ask.
"In her own words: I want nice grandkids, not little blue devils" She says.
"But Lily is red" You say.
"That's besides the point" Fran says.

Before you can ask anymore questions, Lily and Daisy turn around. You expect an answer from them, but instead you get a shrug.

"I dunno. I guess it's cause you're pretty cool" Liily says.
"It was funny when you threw rocks at those knights" Daisy says.

In response, you shrug too. "Good enough for me" You say.

When you find the cart, you're greeted by Derrick and Ilica. They're both sitting in the front seats, and it looks like Derrick is showing Ilica a few things.

"Welcome back" Derrick says. "You guys get... a whole stack of papers? What's up with those?"

"Kieve's notes" Emi says. "Apparently she was up all night researching pure demons and chaotics"
"Ah" Derrick says. "Wait... Yuu can't read"

"I plan on teaching him" Emi says. "Did you guys manage to find any work?"
"From the guild, actually" Derrick says. "We've got a whole bunch of hand-ballista arrows in the lower compartment that has to go to the hunter's guild in Sherton"
"Which means that Yuu gets to see his girlfriend~" Ilica says.

"Okay" You say.
Ilica looks annoyed. "It's no fun teasing you if you don't react" She says.
"Oh... uhh..." You say.
"Nevermind" Ilica says. "Are you guys set to go?"
"Pretty much" Emi says.
"Then I guess this is goodbye" Ilica says as she hops down from the cart.

Derrick reaches down to you. "Give those here, I'll stick 'em in the back" He says.

You hand the papers up to Derrick, after the devils release your arms so they can hug Ilica.

"Will you guys come back?" Lily asks.
"Of course we will" Ilica says.

The girls hop over and jump up to hug you. You open up your arms to accept them.

You like hugs. They're warm. They're friendly. They're nice.

Emi leans in and pats them on the head. "If we want to get to Leon, then we'll have to come through here anyway" She says. "We'll definitely come visit"

They look up and smile, as you lower them back to the ground. When you let them go, they both give you a peck on the cheek, before skipping over to Fran.

"Thanks again, Fran" Derrick says to the black puddle on the floor.
"No, thank you" Fran replies. "You guys went way out of your way to bring my girls home. I owe you all, big time. If you ever need anything..."

"We'll be sure to send you a message" Derrick says. "You guys ready?"
"Yeah" Emi says. "Let's get going"

You and Emi both get into the cart, whle Ilica climbs up on top of it. When you're all sitting, Derrick starts it up. As it rolls away, Emi opens the back door.

"Bye bye!" Lily shouts.
"See you next time!" Daisy shouts.
"See ya!" You call back.

"Do you think they'll be alright?" Emi asks.
"They're under the protection of the Guild" Derrick says. "Even the dumbest Lubran soldier knows not to mess with the guild. Hell, they're probably better off than we are"

"Do you think I could be a hunter?" You ask.
"I think you've got a good shot" Derrick says. "Why, are you interested?"
"Maybe" You say. "It sounds neat"

"It's also dangerous" Ilica says.
"So is telling knights that the king is stupid, and fighting a demon you know you can't beat" You say.
"Right, I almost forgot that you're an idiot" Ilica says.

"I think he'd do well as a hunter" Emi says. "There's a lot you'd need to work on though"
"Like what?" You ask.

"For one thing, you'd need to be a bit more proficient with the mageblade if that's what you wanna stick with" Derrick says. "You'd also need to know some basic survival stuff, team dynamics, and how to read and write"

"What does reading have to do with hunting?" You ask.
"Hunters are required to report on everything they kill" Derrick says. "There's also a written test, along with the practical exam, that you have to pass to get in"

"Oh..." You say.
"Don't fret, Yuu" Emi says, as she picks up the big stack of papers. "I'll get you reading in no time!"

Emi starts out by reading part of the first page out loud. When you're still confused, she goes over each letter and tells you what sound it makes.

You catch on pretty quickly. It feels kinda like you learned this before, or knew it already. But while you catch on quickly, it takes quite a while for you to actually get it down.

That isn't helped by the fact that Derrick let Ilica take the wheel when you were about 5 minutes away from Contique. The jerky way Ilica keeps the cart straight on the road, and the way she brakes abruptly to avoid things, and accelerates abruptly afterwards gives you a new appreciation for how smooth the ride to Contique was.

A few times you almost get thrown off of your chair because llica saw something in her say, swerved to avoid it, and hit the brakes all at once.

Well... it's been a few hours now, and she seems to be doing better. And so are you. While Kieve simplified the language she used for these notes so you could understand it, every now and then you come across a really hard word that you have to ask for help with. But otherwise you're good on your own.

It's a slow process, as you have to sound out each word in your head as you read it, but it beats not being able to read at all.

Kieves notes have some neat stuff in them too. She put together all the records she could find about Caian and Malieria, with each instance of them using Soul, and what makes pure demons different from people or regular demons.

Now that you've gotten through what you think is the 'intro', you can move onto the other piles. You'll start with-

Unfortunately, this one doesn't seem to be written in the same simple way as the last one. Of course, Kieve didn't know you were a pure demon when she wrote this. So it's probably written more for her, and not you...

Emi slithers up and over to you, looking down at the pages in your hand. "What's up?" She asks.
"This one is too complicated" You say. "What does this word mean?"

"Causation..." Emi says. "'Uhh... wow. This stuff might be over my level, nevermind yours"
"Can you help?" You ask.

Emi gives you a look sa she considers it. "I have a condition" She says.
"What's that?" You ask.
"It's... kinda cold this morning" She says.

Emi smiles, and her little tongue flicks around for a second. Then she slithers around behind you and wraps you in her tail.

She leaves your arms and chest free since you'll be needing those, and leaves your head resting just below her chin.

"Muuuuch better" She says. "I don't know how you guys can take the weather here"
"The rest of us aren't cold blooded" Ilica calls back.
"Ilica, eyes on the road, eyes on the road!" Derrick says.
"It's fi-"

The car comes to a sudden stop. Thankfully Emi puts out her arms so the two of you don't end up rolling around.

"Damnit, you wait until now to cross the road?" Ilica shouts. "Stupid friggin' animals. You should've let me hit em..."

"Is everything alright up there?" Emi asks.
"It's fine. Just a herd of dumb Lerts" llica says, as the cart starts moving again.

Emi sighs, and turns her attention back to the papers. "Shall we get started?" She asks.
"Yeah" You say, pointing to a word on the first page. "What does this mean?"

You and Emi read through each part of Kieve's notes in turn. You understand some of it, but every now and then a word you don't recognize comes up and you're left wondering.

Which is why Emi retells each part in a way that you can understand it at the end. She's really good at it too.

The first part of the notes is all about how one becomes a pure demon. You pretty much knew this already, given the huge scar on your chest.

A pure demon is made when someone survives having their heart removed by becoming both a demon and a chaotic.

According to the books, Malieria was the one who made Caian into a pure demon. Though no one knows how it happened to Malieria, and while he knew the secret to making a pure demon, he never shared it.

The second part is about how a pure demon's element manifests itself within their heart. Though it becomes unusable when you become a chaotic, your element can still be determined by the sound your heart makes.

Caian was an earth elemental before becoming a pure demon, and it's said that his heart sounded like the rumbling of the earth.

"What would that make me?" You ask Emi.
"Yours sounded like waves, so... water?" She says.
"Neat" You say, as you go back to reading.

Part three is the final part, and it's about 5 times as long as the others. It goes into the abiilities the pure demon possesses, and how they differ from a normal demon...

This part actually gets too complicated for Emi at a few points, and strangely it's you that has to help her out.

Normally a demon's eyes are imbued with a sort of illusory power. With blood demons being able to give those they make eye contact with brief visions of death, and so on.

Pure demons have no such power. Instead, they...

"See what must be seen... not just what's there to see" You say.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Emi asks.
"I think it's like... when I could see that tower. The one with the owls" You say.
"Howling tower?" Emi asks.
"Yeah" You say. "Even though you said that I shouldn't be able to see it, I still could"
"That makes no sense" Emi says. "But continue. Maybe something in here will shed some light on it..."
"Kay" You say.

This power extends beyond what is visible, or even tangible. Caian said that when things looked bleak, the future spread itself out before him. Every possible action he could take, and the consequences it would have, were all laid bare. Like this, he effectively chose his ideal future.

"Okay. I'm lost" Emi says.
"I think..." You say. "I haven't seen that. But I know what it means"
"You do?" Emi says.
"Hmm... I think it happened in the prison" You say. "When I needed to escape the red room. I just knew that I had to escape, and the things that I'd need to do to escape just became obvious"
"That's... weird" Emi says.
"And then it wore off, or something... and Ilica had to save me" You say.
"You're welcome!" Ilica says.

You keep reading further, to where it details Malieria's exploits.

It's said that Malieria had mastery over this ability, to the point where he could make even impossible things happen.

"The legends say that the women of our world were once much like the men..." Emi says. "But in the chaos as the world was splitting asunder, Malieria chose a future with the women we know... today?"
"So girls used to be like Madelaine and that blond lady?" You ask.
"How come I've never heard of this before?" Emi asks. "And what does it mean by 'split asunder'?"

"Maybe there's more in here" You say, as you turn to the next page.

And that was it. The section on pure demons is over.

"I don't think I understand" Emi says.
"I don't either" You say. "If Malieria could do impossible things, why did he decide to make the women different?"
"No, what I don't understand is... It's just crazy" Emi says. "One person could not have created my entire race"
"It did say that he could do impossible things" You say.
"But..." Emi says. She hugs your chest, and tightens her coils. "It's just... crazy"

"I guess it is" You say.
"I think I'm done for now, Yuu" She says. "I need a nap"
"Kay" You say. "Can I get out first?"

...

"Emi?"

...

"I guess not" You say. Ah well, it's not like you aren't comfortable. Even though it is kinda tight... but it's a comfy kinda tight. You figure you might as well settle in for a nap too.
