WE CONTINUE!
On this brave new world where crystal spires erupt from the ground, only the most biodiverse of species survive!

Rules:
>Open an existing creature in paint or whatever and give it one evolutionary adjustment at the time
>describe adjustment and upload new image
>every once in a while the environment will shake things up, some creatures will go extinct

>No silly stuff, those won't become cannon
>No creating new species out of thin air
>No 'catching up' and doing a bunch of evo's by yourself, every creature should go through multiple steps by multiple people
>Evolutions shouldn't be to drastic, but you shouldn't bitch about other players 'not being realistic' either

I as OP don't make the evolutionary trees, we as a group make them! If you want to see one, consider making it yourself. That's how we thrive as a species!

More and more food is showing up above the sea. The Klaw now spends more time in the air then it does on the water.

Away from the dangers of the sea in its adult life. The sacs now refill from filtered air without the need to rely on methane from Buds. Thinner ends of the fins help create surface area for very little weight.

It only returns to the water to mate and when they try to find new thermals to launch themselves into the air once more.

This particular breed of Gurksnails evolves further. For the sake of easy recognition, I dub this species "Devil's Crown" (please forgive my excessive ham).

The creature doesnt't move around much. The tongue-leg is mostly used as a suction cup to attach to the seabed, or to the surface of the crystals. Devil's Crowns mostly move around when they are young, and settle down when they are older.

The spines on the carapace became even more pronounced, and are now filled with flesh. A lot of small opening pepper the surface of the creature, allowing it to filter water for nutrients, and to excrete waste.

The body chemistry of the crowns is quite caustic. The secretions of the leg help the creature digest minerals and organic remains. The small openings constantly release rather nasty fluids into the surrounding water.

As the hive travels along the ocean, it encounters gurks.
Some of them are able to survive the cloud of toxins spewed into the surrounding waters, and feast upon the nutrient bubbles farmed by the cultivator klaw, and lay their eggs within the safety of the hive. The hive's clusters begin secreting chemicals to control this new resident too, and it proves useful, leaving scraps of its prey behind, providing nitrogen to the hive, valuable given its now mobile state.

Something awakens within the root clusters of the hive. Within that bundle of material, containing millions of nerves, a thought appears.
Basic, and lacking depth, it sets itself apart from an instinct on one thing alone.
Desire.
As more of these minds awaken, a single thought spreads through the entire patch.
The desire to spread, to enslave, and to eat.

With the increase of hostile particles in the water, the filter-feeder Sok gains an elongated body with inner tendrils that absorb chemicals. That way, the water that passes through has a longer trajectory which means nutrients are absorbed better and harmful chemicals (like those pesky hive-chemicals) are broken down before they can do harm.

Behold the majestic Sailsok, roaming ever free in these oceans.

>>No.46527143

Yellow Klaw grows a bit longer with a thin whip like tail, and a small bump casing on its head that is filled with a greyish flesh.

The bump on forehead is made from trace elements of yellow crystal that have been modified by the digestive juices to form a unique compound. It has a vague shielding effect from chemicals in the water that haven't been processed through the Yellow Klaw's system.
I hope that wasn't too much.

The Finned Sok develops a peculiarity. These new extremities become an extension of its unique manner of asexual reproduction.

To elaborate, this species is genderless and procreates through 'budding,' where new organisms start off as growths on the parent's body and separates only when mature, leaving behind scar tissue. The most interesting factor is that while the buds are still attached to their parent, the parent is able to use them as limbs capable of clumsy grabbing and locomotion. Their primary advantage lies in their voracious appetite, their needle-like teeth and their completely uncontrolled, wild breeding.

This descendant of the Finned Sok is simply known as a Glov, Glovs when plural.

how about the babies that grow up in the water have an exoskeleton but the adults drop it off when they leave?

Anyway, a significant amount of SkyKlaws develop aerodynamic filters on top of their heads. These are slight protusions and use the original hard head as the base (sort of like those car foil things) and this is used to capture floating debris and maybe even let soil build up in special spaces between spikes?

then we can have an offshoot Meel species based upon living in the air and having a TRUE symbiosis.

There are some species of Gurk that were resilient enough to resist the allure of the hive.

These creatures are marked by their pronounced facial swellings, which develop into pressurized vents in their own right, used to expel dirt and toxins. They use their immunity to the hive toxins to their advantage, preying on species of Klaw that are enslaved by the hive. Those with more atrophied fins find it much easier to navigate the Bud hives, causing this breed to eventually lose their fins entirely and rely on their facial vents for limited maneuverability in the water.

Now known as the Divurk, this breed has settled into a comfortable niche, preying upon the servants of the Hive Bud.

Anyway:

Armoured Buried Snek grows more sedentary and armoured. At its base it grows some hardened balls filled with a combination of nutrients and reproductive juices. When the balls fill up the outside hardens and they drop off for more to grow at a later stage.

These balls will later grow small flagella to move through the months further away.

The shell is very very tough and only breaks when certain parameters are met. This means that only lava can certifiably do enough heat to penetrate lethally and so that family of Armoured Sedentary Sneks are immune from all but the worst catastrophies.

Anyway, the ForeskinSnek has developed a way of changing the flavour of the chemical waste in order to be more pleasing to the various bottom dwellers and sifters, and also shore dwellers who eat from the shoreline what washes up.

So atm there is a yellow (pineapple) and orange (orange) flavour.

This means that more and more of these foreskins get eaten and the seed flourishes inside the stomach and intestine equivalents, feasting off toxins and all that drama, and reducing the time that HiveMinding has over creatures.

Filtergurks adapt to bottom-feeding.

Their shells become conical, and they're no longer dragged about by currents. The tongues become full-blown tentacles, capable of not only filtering surrounding water for nutrients, but grasping small organisms that disturb them.

The topmost tentacles develop chemical receptors, and water vibration sensors. If a Filtergurk feels something approaching, it retracts everything into its' shell.

It mostly feeds on minerals dissolved in water, organic residue, and small and careless creatures.

It's not all good for the hive though, while it can still squirt toxins, they have a much diminished effect as when they can spread through water, and its pheremones are near useless without water to disperse them in. Its movement speed on land is also reduced without the water supporting it, though its roots can be used to hunt slower land prey if its photosynthesis is not enough, and its budding intellect is still intact.

The Divurk resorts to diving deeper and deeper, to assault the bottom-dwellers of the ocean as the surface waters are blotted out by black dust. Normal eyes become less and less useful and more of its flesh becomes concealed beneath its shell, until none of the softer meat is exposed. Even the remaining eyes are nothing but tiny, useless specks, almost entirely useless in the abyssal waters. Instead, it hunts through scent using its various valves and vents.

I actually meant the guy to be an add on to the exo gurk rather than the one before it. I guess the chart maker just got confused because a gurk with colors from all 3 crystals just so happened to look similar to a regular gurk.

The current and the winds sometimes hurl the Ringbuds out of the water. Most perish, except for the lucky few that land near the green crystals.

The body structure of these ringbuds adapted to coil around the crystals. The black-crystal filtering apparatus of what used to be the ring evolves to ingest small amounts of light-absorbent chemicals from their new substrate. These chemicals then get deposited in the nutrient bubbles, as well as in characteristic spots in the leaves. These spots begin to form a network in the Spotbud's body.

It is not, although the most recent species is subject to a sudden throwback. There's a sudden resurgence of Crysoks with more spiky teeth and lacking the feelers of the previous breeds, instead opting for an extremely long and muscular neck that allows for it to snatch out of its shell and quickly retract, should it spot an approaching predator. This gives it a niche as an underwater predator of the smallest creatures, while also serving as scavenger for left-overs.

The Gurks "lungs" turns out to be uniquely suited to allow the Gurk to survive in and out of water which allows some Gurks to move further inland.

With a whole range of new crystals to interact with, the amphibious Gurks begin to take on multiple colorful hues. The Gurks Crystalline shell offers a modicum of protection against the cold (as it did against heat) so Gurks start evolving larger thicker shells in order to better protect them from predators and weather alike.

This combination of a larger shell and colder weather has had the unfortunate side-effect of slowing gurks down however.

The "leg" roots become strong enough to lift the core clusters and blooms up into the air, free from non airborne creatures, where tantalizing nutrient packs entice aerial herbivores to feed, inadvertently carrying the seed pods attached to the stalk with them.

The devil's crowns move to inhabit the orange crystals directly. They have sacrificed their already limited mobility for even greater resistance to the excruciating heat.

Instead of letting small pieces of their soft bodies float away to become new devil's crowns, the new crowns now form on outshoots of the parent's leg. When they mature, they separate from the original creature.

The small openings on the surface of the crown have developed valves to better regulate the flow of liquid. The crowns no longer constantly pollute the surrounding waters with their secretions. Instead, they release them in great quantities when disturbed. The sudden burst of the acidic compounds can griveously harm attacking creatures.
