>Introduction:

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

While you not much of a Shakespeare buff, that line of dialogue keeps popping up in your head as you sit back down at your table inside "The Pao Pao Cafe" and try to think over what the hell just happened. One moment, you're talking about doing a friendly sparring session with "Tsunami Tsyako" (The girl that knocked out of last week's Real Bout final) and could even see a flash of a person behind her "Kayfabe" Pro-Wrestling gimmick... Then you tell her your name and she wants to rip your head off your neck and shit down the hole.

The fuck is with that? That's where the whole name business comes back into focus.

Your name is Katja Hartkern. You've had to deal with a lot of shit for having such a unique name, even in a relatively "Liberal" place as your hometown of Coober Pedy, Australia (Noted for supplying most of the world's gem-quality Opal and for being located in a desert so hot and arid that most of the houses there are built underground or inside of mountains)... Your skin tone didn't help either. Especially when you finally started living on your own in Adelaide before graduating High School and re-locating to Japan...

Except Tsuyako seems to know of somebody named Katja Hartkern and claimed that the two guys (Brothers for sure, now that you can see their faces clearer) and their girlfriends(?) at the table across from yours knew this "Other Katja" too. And apparently, you're disrespecting the memory of her by simply existing...?

Between this, the poltergeist you vanquished last night and that garbled phone message you might have to hire somebody to exorcise your house... Where you could go for that though? China Town? Little Korea? A Catholic Church? (Wait, scratch that last one. You're not a little boy; They wouldn't be interested.)
>>
>>46545437

That's when you follow your nose and look down to see your food (A "Double-Double" Burger, a small side of curly fries you didn't order and a bottle of Coca-Cola) has magically arrived.

"The fries are on me" the waiter (A cute-looking black guy with dated, beaded dreadlocks) says with a smile. "Actually, I forgot to mention that both cafes are doing a promotion: If you're order's over-"

"-Thanks."

He shrugs at how quickly you cut off his sales pitch, but says "It should be a crime for pretty girls like you to frown like that" before heading off to check in on the blond guy's table. Well, that's considerate of him, you guess... No, wait, not "Considerate". What's a good word for a guy hitting on you, but not even knowing it? Because that what it felt like.

>A. Eat your meal, then do a few warm-ups before stepping into the squared circle with Tsuyako. Your metabolism is quick enough it wont upset your stomach.

>B. Chow down, but tell the two blond guys that somebody's looking for a fight upstairs if they're interested before take off; Either one of them could wipe the floor with Tsuyako easily.

>C. Ask the waiter if you could get some stuff to have this to-go and quietly make your exit; You don't want to turn on the dark side of your ego today... Not in a sparring session, at least. Or without at least two fair witnesses.

>D. Ask for a waiter, tell him/her that you want to take your food to-go, then pound "Tsunami Tsuyako" into paste; You always fight better on an empty stomach anyway...

As appetizing as your food looks (Seriously, what is it about a good burger from a local restaurant that looks a thousand better than any fast food joint save In-N-Out or Five Guys?), you know what has to be done. So, you quietly motion for a waiter and ask him "Could you get this in a to-go bag for me? I have to take care of something..."

He looks at you for a second and starts to say something before you storm off and prepare yourself to throw down at the Pao Pao cafe's "Performance Stage", Tsuyako already waiting for you and doing stretches.

Curiously, she's not wearing the "Traditional" Sukeban outfit she rolled up in while doing her stretches (And going into a full split); Instead she's stripped down to the outfit she probably already had on and what you peeked at her wearing at Real Bout (Red One-Piece Swimsuit, Black Elbow & Kneepads along with matching Ankle boots).

As a look, you kind of like it more than her "Usual" outfit; It has a real retro charm and makes her look like the lead in "Gatblaster" or something (Well, a stretched and widened "Gatblaster" anyway; Tsuyako's the kind of "High-Test Queen" FightChan would drool over).

As a fighter? Right now, she's a target, a benchmark. Just another piece of meat for you to slaughter while laughing your head off all the way to the bookies...

"Any last words, "Katja"?" she asks, saying your name like she was spitting something foul out of her mouth while tightening up her gloves.

>A. "I came here to chew bubblgum and kick yer' arse. But now? I'm all out of gum."

Well, so much for thinking about going easy on her. Or taking that gig for The Southtown Wrestling Federation, for that matter; If you have to deal with this bitch on a daily basis, you'd just go back to training in the art of Not!Kyokugenryuu Karate with Tatsuya-Sensei (And maybe Adam if he gets off of his lazy ass and does something outside of playing videogames and dote on Ellie).

You run towards Tsuyako with the same kind of reckless abandon that most martial artists would scoff at and hit her in the head with a jumping heel kick, then combo into your Left Hook and top it off with your "Punch Flurry". She lands too quickly to try to go for an uppercut, but you stick with her and try to sweep her while she's still getting up. Tsuyako blocked it, but you were able to hop back and throw out a quick Kou'ouken to stagger her for an uppercut...

Which she dodges and then grabs you out of the second you land. OK, she ain't a tin-can. Not yet at least.

You wordlessly ukemi out of her throw and land a kick to her stomach, nearly doubling her over. For a brief second you think about hitting a "Stun-Gun Stinger", but hold off and instead do a Hien Shippu Kyaku, the sound of wind blowing through your feet as you land the last hit and knock Tsuyako down HARD.

Much to your amazement, she gets up quickly, but seems to be dizzy already; She's rubbing her forehead and trying to smack herself back into focus... The perfect chance to:

>A. Keep the offense train going and don't let up; This bitch's going to pay for talking to you like that! (Roll 2d20)

>B. Let her come to you and counter her advances; She's mad and you can use that anger against her (Roll 2d20)

>C. RYUUKO RANBUU!!! (Roll 3d20)

Fuck KOF XIII combos.
>>
>>46546720

Never? I wasn't a big fan of XIII's ToD combo system... But, if "Katja" trains hard enough and learns the right moves? You could get that kind of damage.

>>46546611
>>46546514

Sorry for the delay; Lost track of time talking to friends.

No mercy for this one. Not for talking to you like that, or for denying you Real Bout glory last week (Even if you got paid a generous amount by her fed afterward). You hit her in the face with a dashing Straight Right, then hit a quick uppercut that should've knocked her right out of the "Ring"...

Except Tsuyako seems to recover while in mid-air and latches onto your arm, quickly taking you down with her and locking in a Jujigatame. The pain is pretty excruciating for a couple of seconds, but Tsuyako didn't properly lock it in, so you minimize the damage and kick out of it and land a "Super Kick" to her back.

She rolls off of the raised platform and lands with a thud and you start to slowly make your way back to your table (Walking backwards to keep your guard up), but Tsuyako hops back up to the ring and quickly takes off her headband and dashes at you quicker than you expected. You anage to land a quick kick to knock her out of that "Wave-Dash", but she seems to power through it and tackle your legs.

Rather than going for a submission, she transitions into a "Full Mount" and tries to do some "Ground & Pound" to your face.. That's not good.

OK, no more kiddie gloves. Those punches are starting to hurt as you try to block a few, but "Tsunami Tsuyako" seems to be tiring after a couple of strikes, so you hear yourself laughing at her while you grab her arm and mover her around the hard floor of the "Stage" and perform a Judo submission move tailor-made for a situation like this: The Ude hishigi juji gatame.

Goddamn, Judo's awesome sometimes. You didn't even have to get up off of your back to counter that punch! You've got your crazy old pervert of a teacher at Tokai to thank; He taught you well.

"Do you really think that the last disciple of "The Demon" is gonna lose to a dough-ball like you!?" you yell as you crank her arm back and for, still chuckling a little as you can hear footsteps walking towards the two of you.

Spectators? Fuck yeah, it'll only add to this bitch's humiliation.

"Come on, tap already!" you say with a laugh, Tsuyako trying to get out of it but struggling to break free with a face that looked like it was carved out of marble stone-faced. "You keep this up and I'll just break your bloody arm!"

You're laughing like an escaped mental patient right now and you don't care. If it'll throw the opponent off of their game and get them to submit, so be it; To you, victory is all that matters at the moment. She lasts longer than you expected, but eventually Tsuyako cracks and starts to tap like crazy, that stone-like face crumbling into rubble and starting to sweat.

Fucking pathetic. And she calls herself "The Boss" ("Sukeban")? You're a bigger gangster than her at this point.

>A. Keep it locked in and break her fucking arm.

"Alright, before I let you go, you're going to tell me what you know" you state, putting on the kind of voice you usually only use on your boss or with a stingy fightclub promoter trying to stiff you.

"W-What?" Tsuyako groans.

"About this girl... The Katja Hartkern you know."

"Let go and I'llaaaaaargh!" Tsuyako gasps.

"Not yet... Not until you talk."

The sweat on Tsuyako's face is pouring down her neck... It looks almost sexy, not that you're into the kind of stuff. "Alright... Alright..."

You let up just enough so that her face doesn't look like a grape and she starts to explain after taking a big breath. "About a year ago, there was a KOF tournament. A big one."

"Why haven't I heard about it?" you ask, genuinely curious and dropping the "Tough Bitch" act for a moment.

"I don't know!" she groans, thrashing to try and get up out of the hold like you did to her at Real Bout. "It's tied down in legal stuff... New sponsors came in and denied it happened, or won't acknowledge it, or release-"

"-OK. And Katja?" you ask, the group from the table watching you go throw this interrogation.

"Hey, let her go" the muscular blond girl says in the kind of tone that Cops on TV use.

"Not until I'm DONE!" you snarl.

"She... She was like you. A little darker skin, a little buffer bodyeeeeaaaahhh" she says. "Can't you just let me go?! I'll tell you everything!"

"And?" you ask, still locked in and not giving an inch but not applying any real pressure either.

"And she fought alongside me, and Fiona Graves, and a couple of Kyokugen" Tsuyako starts to say, but pauses to hyperventilate a little.

"Come~on" you muse.

"OK, this is just getting ridiculous; Let her go or I'm calling the damn cops!" the blond chick yells at you.

You sigh, let go of Tsuyako's arm and do a Pro-Wrestling-style "Kip-Up" to get back on your feet. "Fine... Now talk. My food's getting cold."

Tsuyako sits up and grasps her arm for a second before looking up at you. "That was it... the five of us fought this..."

"This? What?"

"... Something..." Tsuyako says, a confused look on her face. "I blacked out after a little bit and woke up in the hospital. I don't know what happened after that."

You cross your arms under your chest (Mocking how Tsuyako did it to you just a few minutes ago), then tap the brunette Asian chick's shoulder and ask her "Hey, do you know what she's talking about?" in Japanese.

"I honestly don't have a clue" she replies (Round, soft parts of her body shifting ever-so-slightly under her dress) as her hubby (The shorter blond brother) shrugs, but then asks "You really studied under Jubei Yamada?"

You nod. "I was the last person to train under him before he got ill and had to retire."

"Is Master Jubei really still alive?"

"I think so... God knows how" you reply, then tell Tsuyako "Stay off that arm for a couple of days, OK? I tried not to break it."

Tsuyako seems to hear you, but doesn't nod as she kind of curls up into a ball and you head back to your table. She really needs to change her gimmick; You can tell that she doesn't want to be the "Hard-ass destroyer" kind of girl all of the time... Which is something you could pull off with flying colors.

The blonde muscle-girl walks with you back your table and stares you down while you grab your bags and your food.

"Do you know who I am?" she asks.

You take a look at her. Nice bod, but not ringing any bells. "No, I don't. Should I?"

She pulls out a badge out of her back pocket and shows it you. A bounty hunter? "Maybe you should" she says with a cool, steely gaze.

Aw fuck, she probably knows about you from the fightclubs. Damn it to hell, how are you going to get out of this one?

You can tell by the look in her eye that she's trying to play the "Bad, but sensible Cop" right now. Yeah, nah, that's not going to work on you. Besides, you cut any of the possible ties to whichever gang is in power now in South Town's underworld a while ago.

"Listen, Mary... I grew up thinking that I'm a worthless Abbo from Australia. I've that had to deal with cops arresting me on trumped-up charges all the time; You don't scare me" you tell her, complete with your best "No Fucks Given" face.

Surprisingly, she backs up a little. It probably wasn't what she was expecting... Then again, it never is here in 'Murricah. In 'Straya, racism is a part of everyday life and it makes you ponder why no one has come up with a "Aborigine Lives Matter" hashtag yet.

"And I'm sorry to hear that" Mary admits (Oh shit, is this that "Blue Mary" Ryan chick you've heard about? Damn, she's a lot prettier than you imagined). "But you know what's just as bad? Using that kind of prejudice as an excuse to do whatever you want."

"If it's cold comfort, I never have and don't intend to" you tell her. "Besides, the cops here are worse than where I lived..."

"Tell me about it "Mary grumbles as the big, hunky one of the two blonde brothers walks over. "From what I heard half the damn force had to get taken in since last year over a bunch of charges..."

"Mary, let's just go" her boyfriend(?) says to her, then turns to you. "the kind of skill you have is a gift. You shouldn't abuse it like that."

"I hear you loud and clear there... Er, what's your name?"

"Terry" he says, then shakes your hand.

A nice, firm handshake? On a hunk like him? Shit, why do you miss out on nice guys all the time? ... Hang on, Terry?! No way, is he?

"I gotta take off... See ya' both around" you stammer, blushing a little. Fucking'A', that was Terry Bogard! In the flesh! From the way FightChan talks about him, you figured he was a tall tale, like South Town's Paul Bunyan or something... So damn, that was Andy & Mai huh? Cute not-couple.

By the time you get to your car and start to FINALLY eat your lunch, it's not quite 2:30 in the afternoon... Plenty of time to go somewhere else until traffic hits and everything gridlocks, but on the other hand where could you go? Do you want to even go anywhere else after all of that just went down in The Pao Pao Cafe?

>A. The Gym. You need to work your stresses and go over why you almost snapped at the Pao Pao. Also, Sick Gainz.

>B. The Aquarium. You need to soothe and calm your nerves. Looking at fish helps.

>C. The Arcade in China Town. Get the competitive juices out of your system with that one racing game that makes your eyes almost bleed.

>D. Look through a phone book and call up an exorcist. You need to get the freaky stuff at your house taken care of pronto.

Is there anybody in KOF that could do this though?

I don't think so... The only demon exorcist I can think of in any SNK game is Akari from The Last Blade.

You finish your meal right as it's starting to get cold and flip out your phone, searching for any kind of "Exorcist" or equivalent. Unfortunately, in the hour you spent looking that up on your phone (And getting glares from passers-by sitting in your car), you find a bunch of weird links to lots of questionable content (Along with one you bookmarked for later that discussed something that allegedly happened at the end of the Bakumatsu Roman era), you don't end up finding anything close to what you were looking for.

Well, damn it, you'll have to call HIM up...

You search through your rolodex of numbers and call up "The Wind". As much as you hate having to deal with him, he's not too bad when it comes to dealing with otherworldly ghosts and spirits and shit (Probably got it from his sister; She was big into all of that).

"Yo?"

"Yo. It's me."

"He~ey girl. Miss me?"

"As if" you joke. "I was wondering if you know anybody that could help me out?"

"Whatchu need girl? I owe you a favor" he says, the sound of something debauched going on in the background. Christ, is he at a strip club or something already? Where cold you go for something like that this early in the day?

"I've got a bit of a ghost problem" you slowly, carefully admit.

"Some guy in a mask trying to steal from you?"

"No, a real ghost problem... Well, actually, it's a lot of little things but I need like an exorcist to come out to my house or something."

"The Wind" (Kazunori Kazahaya, the gangster who hides from his own gang at times) pauses on the phone for a while. "Man, I'dunno... Most of the peeps I knew that did that kind of thing are either retired, out of the country or pushing up daisies."

"Could you do it? I'm kind of desperate here" you admit.

Another long pause... And yep, you can tell that he's at some club throwing money down some girl's panties. "I need like two days, maybe three to cleanse myself for something like that..."
>>
>>46552524

Three days your ass, for the amount of sins he commits on a daily basis it would take a lifetime for him to "cleanse" himself... Then again, you're not one to judge.

"Come on man, I had to deal with one last night. I've been up since 3 AM trying to stay awake in case he comes back" you half-fib.

"Sorry... I mean, if my sister were here, maybe she could-"

"-NO. No fucking way is she coming up to my house."

Yet another pause, more hoots and hollars from the other end of your conversation... Now that you think about it, it sounds like they're watching something like mud or oil wrestling maybe. "You absolutely HAVE to have it all done by tomorrow?"

"Yes please!"

"... OK, I'll call in a couple of favors and have somebody come out tonight" "The Wind" tells you. "But I don't think it would be wise to stay there during any of the rituals or anything; Weird shit could happen and my sister would kill me if anything happened to you."

"Your sister would kill you for just hating your guts, ya' goof..." you tell him as you start to think over the planning of something like this.

>A. Accept the offer and try to get a cheap hotel, or call up Tatsuya to crash at his house or something for the time being.

>B. Ask for Kazahaya to do it personally in a few days. What's the worse that could happen in the meantime?

>C. Tell him that you wasted his time and just shrug off all of this superstitious mumbo-jumbo. Besides, as Tatsuya would say "You aren't trying hard enough if you can't punch a ghost."

We need to train. We're lacking in Ki attacks. And it would make Tatsuya proud.

"So, you OK? You need to think about it, or?"

"Nah, go ahead and do it tonight" you tell "The Wind". "I'll just pack and head out before your guy arrives."

"Kay... I'll be seeing you" "Wind" tells you before hanging up.

OK, so you're out of your house for a day.No biggie; You had to do the same thing when you had to call up the fumigators in Adelaide that one time... You hit the road and call up Tatsuya the moment traffic comes to a stop (You can't be too careful about that; You don't have a wireless headset and the fine's outrageous if a cop catches you).

"Hey. What's up?"

"Can I crash at your place for a night Tatsuya-Sensei" you ask.

"Something wrong?"

"Kind of... I was going through my pantry and found a roach infestation, so I called up some exterminators."

"Damn... That sucks." he takes a long pause before admitting "I can't help you out sweetie; I've got a game night going with some old friends" before hanging up.

Huh, that's... Not like him at all. Something's up. Trouble with Ellie & Adam? Maybe a student got hurt while you were gone from classes?

Whatever, that window's closed. You drive home and say a silent prayer before walking inside your house, hoping that everything's still in the places that you left it. Thankfully, no malevolent spirits decided to fuck with you, so you grab all of your most precious belongings (A couple sets of your best clothes, some socks & lingerie, the family photo album, your lap-top, your stuffed Kangaroos "Ripper & Hopper" and all of the money you stashed in false walls) and drive back into the city... But not before you take one last look back at the old place.

"I mean, it's ludicrous to think anything'll happen" you mutter, but still you can't help but think of stranger things that have happened to you before today... Maybe your Mp3 player could cheer you up on the drive down?

Ah well, they all can't be winners.

You settle on a decent little hotel near Pioneer Plaza in Central City and flop onto your bed by around 7 PM, traffic hindering your progress and the guy at the desk acting like a total dick when you wanted to pay with straight cash frazzling your nerves...

You do a light stretching session to ease some of the aches and pains from fighting Tsuyako, take a shower and turn on the TV to see if anything's on... And find that the place doesn't even have basic cable. Great.

Lucky you brought your laptop with you then. You fire up ye olde' Netflix and stare off into space for a second, thinking of something to watch.

You spot an anime you had been meaning to watch for some time, then see a campy-but-awesome-looking giant monster flick... But, settle on watching the original "Old Boy". You had seen the American remake with Josh Brolin and, well, weren't all that impressed. Sure, Brolin was excellent in his part, but everything else had felt like window-dressing in comparison. You hadn't thought about it until somebody on FightChan brought to your attention that the original was supposed to be leagues better... So, you put on and curl up into bed, getting nice and comfy with your 'roos.

All you can say by the end of it is WHOA. Fucking hell, that was good. You need a rollercoaster of emotions sometimes to ease your soul and take your mind off of stuff... Though, you have admit that some parts of it cut a little too close to the bone for your tastes (Much more than the American version), but even then that's on you and not the film itself.

You stifle a yawn, get up to take a leak and check the time. 9 PM? Nah, it's too early to pack it in just yet. You should probably check up stuff on FightChan before bed. Maybe set your alarm, because you need to get up early in the morning for work...

You walk out into your modest room, take a look out at your stuffed 'roos and smile. They have a lot of good memories attached to them; They remind you so much of the happy times with mum and dad, when you were a kid and life seemed so much simpler... Even now, they can help you sleep when your mind's ill at ease with life. Why, they even look cute with the mask and top-hat that ghost left behind on the-

-Wait a minute... You didn't bring those with you, didn't you...?

Oh FUCK.

And that's the thread everybody! So sorry for the delay right in the middle of it. I intended to not have it happen again without reason...

I could see it. Hell, when I was Archive-binging the first KOF Quest I was convinced Weasel based her off the chick from Murcielago, but as a magical girl.

I actually didn't read that manga until January of this year. I kind of wish I had based Bizuki on her, because THAT is what she should've been in retrospect.

Also, nice theory. No, I'm not going to elaborate on what happened.

She was interesting but complete bullshit at the same time. Only thing I'd complain about so far is that we know basically nothing since the last KOF ended up till now.
>>
>>46555658

Yeah... Plus she was kind of redundant, because she was like the 4th character to have a Samurai Shodown connection in some way and it juse flet like "Eh, whatever" for me.. That's kind of why I voted for that one "Takane" name in the last thread; The Last Blade needs more love.
>>

Quick question before I retire for the evening: Do you have, like, voices in mind for certain characters? Say if you were going to cast your characters for KOF XIV DLC: Who would you cast for whom and why?

Fuck it, I'll give it a shot (Japanese only):

"Old" Katja: Yu Asukawa (Yoko Soumi could fit too, but is a tad too old for it IMO. Yoko as Katja's mom? Sure.)
"New" Katja: ??? (Megumi Toyoguchi maybe? I keep imagining Revy from Black Lagoon's voice when reading the new MC.)
Tsuyako: Minako Kotobuki
Fiona: Yuuko Kaida
Dave: Kanichi Kurita
Kazahaya: ??? (What dialect is he supposed to be?)
>The Spoooky Ghost: Issei Futamata
Everybody Else: Their KOF XIV VA (Blue Mary aside because, well, you know...)
