===============

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

You recently learned that a noble of Olstren is preparing to attack your home country of Gwyrddarfordir. Culann mac Ferrid, son of the Duke of Machrain, wishes to claim his own territory in order to further his courtship of his country's princess, Reagan mac Connaught. Said princess had six other suitors who died under various "mysterious circumstances" and she has offered to help you make Culann mac Ferrid unlucky number seven in exchange for some small personal considerations.

As a result, you now know how many troops mac Ferrid has under his command, where they're being deployed, what passwords his spies use, and so on. The only limit to how badly you can ruin his plans is your imagination.

"We can definitely work with this," Olwen says. "It's just a question of how much effort we want to put into it."

"I have to ask," Myrddin says, "how did you even get this?"

>"I don't want to talk about it."
>"I may have prostituted myself. I'm not too sure what happened."
>"Have you heard about Princess Reagan's six dead suitors?"

"I may have prostituted myself," you say. "I'm not too sure what happened."

Seren blushes bright red and Olwen coughs and chokes on her tea. Myrddin stares at you blankly, perhaps still too hung over to properly react.

"You're going to have to explain that one," Myrddin says.

"You know about Princess Reagan's six dead suitors?" You ask.

"Of course I do," Myrddin says.

"There are rumours about it in the county," Seren adds. "They all died under strange circumstances. Some people say she's cursed, or even that she was responsible."

"Oh, she was definitely responsible," you say. "And our current target will be dead suitor number seven once we're done with him. She just wants us to socialize a bit in exchange for her help."

"That doesn't quite sound like suicide," Olwen says, "but it seems really, really close."

"It'll be fine," you say. "She's just trying to secure her position. Her inheritance will be tenuous at best once her father dies."

"At least we know the information can be trusted," Myrddin says. "We just need to decide how we want to use it."

"We can pretend to be merchants working for their agents," Seren says. "I can prepare a supply of fake alchemical medicines so they'll bring us to their camp."

"I'd rather just sneak through their patrols and assassinate the target," Olwen says. "There's no point in dawdling."

"We'll circumvent their patrols and sneak in," you say. "No one can know we were there."

"It's probably better this way," Myrddin says. "If we take the direct approach, getting out once we're done might be… complicated."

"In any case, we should leave immediately," Olwen says. "We know where Culann is going to be, but until we're across the border we won't know where we'll be able to get to him. It might take us longer than expected to get there."

"I go hunting every now and then, so at least I can make sure we don't get lost," Seren says.

"We'll also need to decide if we'll bring the guards along," Olwen says. "The more we guards we have, the more difficult it will be to go unnoticed, but if we do get caught, we'll need more than the four of us."

>"We'll bring the guards. We'll just have to be careful."

"We'll bring the guards," you say. "We'll just have to be careful about how we move. We can ask them to hang back a little if necessary, but I don't want to be caught alone if something goes wrong. We'll need the extra muskets."

"I'll gather them immediately," Myrddin says.

"In that case, let's get going," you say.

You change into proper traveling clothes and ready your sword, Rhithcan. It's getting a little old-fashioned, but you can't use a musket effectively if you're not focusing on a single target, which isn't your job. Most of the time, the sword works just fine as a backup weapon.

You leave the city on foot, accompanied by your guards, who are all hiding their armour beneath cloaks. The armour is protected by basic enchantments so that it doesn't get to hot, but it still can't be that comfortable.

Seren leads you into the forest, and you follow the hidden trails across the border, checking Seren's knowledge and the notes you received to avoid patrols.

You cross the boarder in record time and avoid any patrols using the information you received from Princess Reagan. You find a spot somewhere out of the way and plan your next move. Since it didn't take you very long, you have quite a bit of time to prepare.

"Culann will be moving between two camps to make his usual inspection," Olwen says. "We can attack one of the camps, or we can try to intercept him while he's traveling."

"Attacking the camps will be more difficult and we'll have to make sure not to leave any survivors," you say, "but an ambush will require very careful timing. This is going to be a bit tricky."

"We have more than enough time to prepare, and we have the element of surprise," Myrddin says. "Either, it's not impossible."

"We'll attack while he's traveling," you say. "This gives us three options."

You draw a crude map outlining the two camps, the road in between, and your current location.

"The first is to just attack when we have an opportunity," you say. "It's flexible, but it won't give us any advantage. The second option is to prepare an ambush in advance."

"That's a good idea," Seren says. "There aren't many trails around here, so it's very unlikely that they'll deviate from their route."

"And the third option?" Olwen asks.

"We follow them and hope we get an opportunity to take the target out while he's alone," you say. "That way, we won't have to fight any of his entourage."

"All options depend on timing and preparation," Myrddin says. "I don't have any preferences."

Olwen and Seren don't have an opinion on the subject either. The decision is up to you.

>[Military/1d4] "We'll try to get to isolate the target."

"We'll try to get him while he's isolated," you say. "Gather everyone. We need to move quickly."

You stay in the underbrush and move in parallel to the trail so that you can't be spotted. The map you were given, while crude, gives you a good enough idea of where you're going. You quickly come within view of Culann mac Ferrid and hide.

Culann mac Ferrid is… it's like someone carved a statue of the perfect idiot and gave it life with forbidden sorcery. He just looks like a complete tool. It's no wonder Princess Reagan would like to be rid of him.

You're too far away to hear, but it's not difficult to tell that he's ordering his men to move out. You follow at a careful distance, and remain undetected.

After a few hours, the enemy stops to take a break. The soldiers scatter to gather food and wood for a meal, leaving Culann with a single guard. This is the best chance you're going to get.

You pull out your sword and motion for the guards to surround the encampments. You don't know if they have defenses against muskets, and fighting up close will make it easier to deal with the bodies if you choose not to leave them there.

You approach the enchantment and strike a tree with the flat of your blade. The area around you becomes silent, and there's a slight rustling on the other side of the camp. Culann and his guard both turn their heads away from you to look at what it is, giving you the chance to strike.

With a push of your legs, you charge into the encampment. Culann screams in surprise when he finally spots you and clumsily raises his sword to defend himself. With a turn of your wrist, your sword refracts towards Culann's throat.

Then slips under his guard and pierces right through Culann shoulder. He drops his sword and you punch in the throat to shut him up.

Olwen comes charging in at the guard, pulled in by the wake of her own sword thrust. The guard's armour is thick, but the point of Olwen's sword is sharp and she is moving fast. Her first thrust slides off the armour - most likely Olwen's doing, since bandits usually don't have enchanted swords - and knocks the guard on his back. Before he can recover, she runs him through.

You follow her example and cut open Culann's throat as soon as your weapon is pulled free.

All things considered, everything went quite well. Being prepared really does pay off.

Myrddin arrives, followed by Seren, who's trying not to look at the bloody corpses.

"And that's one war averted with just a few sword strikes," Myrddin says. "What do you want to do about this?"

You don't have enough time to carry everything away with you. Culann didn't scream too much, but someone might have heard him.

That way, the enemy will have to waste time trying to figure out what happened and if you do this right, they will never know for sure.

"Yes, your highness," Myrddin says. He orders the guards to pick up the bodies and bring them along until you can find a hiding place.

You quickly leave before the Olstren guards come back.

You walk at a brisk pace for a few miles until you come across a dead tree that fell over. You dig a shallow grave for the corpses and move the tree on top of it. It's not perfect, but you doubt anyone will bother to pull a tree away just to dig up a patch of dirt that looks like it might possibly be a grave, not unless these soldiers really like their boss.

"Looks like we're done here," Myrddin says.

"Let's get back to Gwyrddarfordir," Olwen says. "I don't want to be on this side of the border any longer than I have to."

You slow a bit to catch your breath, but you don't want to stay in Olstren longer than necessary either. You move through the forest, your sights set for home.

By the time you're back on the right side of the border, it's late in the afternoon. You're all tired and sweating, especially Seren, who doesn't seem used to this kind of exercise.

"I suppose it's over now," she says. "The soldiers don't have a reason to attack now, do they?"

"Without their commander, they'll have to leave," you assure her. "They're outside their lord's territory, and few nobles will tolerate their rivals' soldiers on their lands for long."

"In that case, I must thank you, your highness," Seren says. "I don't know how many lives you've said."

"And if we're lucky, we'll never know," Olwen says. "I'd really rather not have a war. For now, I just want to clean up a bit."

You gladly accept Olwen's request. Besides, you have your own report to make and you need to make yourself presentable first.

You return to your room to soak in a warm bath and change into more formal clothes so you can meet Reagan again.

"Afraid of becoming unlucky suitor number eight?" Olwen smirks. "All right, I'll come protect you from the big bad killer princess."

"Much obliged."

Reagan mentioned she would be waiting for you in a small teahouse. It's a quiet place, but it's still public, so you know she's not up to anything. Olwen sits near the front while you go to meet Reagan at her table in the back of the establishment.

"Greetings, your highness." You politely bow before Reagan. It's odd to do this for someone who isn't a member of your family. "I'm afraid I have bad news concerning Culann mac Ferrid."

"Oh, how tragic." Reagan puts a hand on her cheek and sighs. "For such misfortune to befall me once again… Oh well, I'm quite certain you'll make more enjoyable company, your highness."

You sit and Reagan pours you a cup of tea. "I suppose you wish to discuss… compensation," you say.

"I'd rather not think of it in such terms," she says. "I really would like to know you better personally."

"I've never really dwelt on such things, to be perfectly honest," you say. "I just assumed politics would be involved."

"They are," Reagan says, "but I have done far too much politics. I would prefer something more personal."

"I suppose we'll just see how things go then."

"Isn't that what normal people do, or are the playwrights all liars?" Reagan asks. "To be honest, I wouldn't mind if your lady friend joined us."

"Wouldn't that be inappropriate?" You ask.

"I'm not such a narrow-minded person," Reagan says. "Besides, I said I would very much like for us to support each other. I also meant to include your advisors and your more intimate acquaintances. I don't believe it's impossible for us to learn to support each other politically and personally, if we're willing to make the effort."

That would certainly make things easier. Consorts and concubines aren't that uncommon among nobles who can afford it, and they're nearly crucial to the usual royal nepotism and innocent corruption that goes on in most kingdoms. Your life would certainly be easier if more nobles had a direct connection to your father. It's just that finding people with mutual interests and a willingness to compromise can be difficult.

"I'm impressed you see things that way," you say. "Few people in your position would."

"I have enough problems dealing with my father's consorts and their children," Reagan says. "I don't want to follow in their example. I'm much more interested in mutual benefits. Speaking of which, I do have some free time before I must return home, if you would like to… socialize. Unless you'd like to return with me?"

"Unfortunately, I've been away from Aurwain too long," you say. "However, I don't mind if you'd like to accompany me back."

"I suppose an extended vacation would do me some good," Reagan says. "My competition will most likely turn on itself while I'm away, and I don't really have a power base of my own to protect. I'll gladly accept your offer, your highness."

"Excellent, it'll give us time to discuss things further," you say. "Perhaps some of my contacts can make your life a little easier."

"So long as they can help me preserve my life, that will be more than enough," Reagan says.

"I know that feeling better than I'd like," you admit. "Other matters aside, since you helped me, I must at least try to return the favour."

"I'm quite happy to see that you take such things seriously, your highness," Reagan says. "The kindness of others is too often exploited."

"I'm not sure I'd call it kindness," you say. "But as you said, mutual benefit is important."

"Since you chose to return to that topic, I've been wondering something. Do you have any other 'intimate acquaintances' I should meet?"

Your brow twitches despite your best efforts to remain stoic. You doubt that topic will go away, which is quite inconvenient since you yourself aren't certain how to answer that question, and you doubt you'll have time to figure it out over the next few days.

Still, you probably averted a war. That's worth some awkwardness and discomfort.
