You take Arizona's wrist in your hand and tug gently, but insistently until she releases your yap.

“I... I don't know that I can do that,” you reply quietly. “It goes against everything I was trained to do. Everything I was raised to believe in. It's the *opposite* of what officers are supposed to do.”

Her eyes bore into you intensely, their light cornflower blue hue seeming to deepen towards dark navy in the gloom.

“... I want to, though,” you admit quietly. A shiver goes down your spine as you admit it aloud. “God knows I want to... but... but I caah!?” you exclaim in surprise as she trods on your feet, stockinged toes atop your shoes. Her weight's so slight that it hardly hurts when she stands on tiptoe, wrapping her arms around your neck tightly. You hug her back almost automatically, but it's clearly *her* hugging *you,* using her grip about your nape to pull you down a bit to her level. Her elbows slide down the outside of your arms as she gets a better grip, hands rubbing up and down your back with firm pressure before digging through your scalp, little tingles of electricity trailing behind her fingertips as she runs them through your hair. She pulls away from you after a moment - with more than a hint of reluctance. Your hands on her hips, hers on your shoulders, you gaze into each other's eyes, searching for whatever you can see in the gloom.

She is definitely breathing faster than usual.

There's a thousand reasons not to do it. You've already stripped away most of the divisions of rank and responsibility - taking that last, lethal step would just confirm for all time *why* they exist and should never be violated -

- but your hand has slid up to her waist before you can countermand it, slipping under t-shirt. She gasps , shivering in your grasp, squeezing your shoulders tightly -

- and that's about when Willie falls off the fucking couch with a thud.

*Screaming.*

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Faito, hate-kun.

Deliver a her from her nightmares.
>>
I know its an oft overlooked fact, but we do have a single case of what the 16" Mk. 7 Super-heavy shell could accomplish at range.

During the American invasion of North Africa, the incomplete French battleship Jean Bart was moored in Casablanca Harbor. Utilizing a network of shore installations, she took under fire ships of the American bombardment force, particularly the South Dakota class battleship USS Massachusetts. The American battleship launched her float plane and a brief duel took place between the two capitol ships at a range of 22 kilometers.

After nearly an hour and a half of firing, Massachusetts managed to disable the lone operational turret on Jean Bart, and landed a total of 7 hits on the incomplete battleship.

One of these hits is of particular note. It struck near the empty 6" gun mounts, pierced the 6.5" thick primary armored deck, and then the 2.2" thick secondary armored deck, before exploding inside the empty magazine. It is unanimously agreed on that, had the magazine been full, this hit would have caused a catastrophic explosion, completely destroying Jean Bart.

Take a moment to consider the power of that shell. It punched through nearly 7 inches of high quality deck armor at a range of 22 KILOMETERS.

TLDR: Don't fuck with SHS.

You and Arizona spring apart almost instinctively - and a moment later you're diving for Willie. You've come thrashing out of your own nightmares enough times that your nurses learned to time their shifts by it for those few endless months. You still do, sometimes. You don't know what lurks in Willie's head, but whatever it is, it can't be nice. She's still flailing about on the floor when you reach her, kneeling by her side.

“Willie, Willie, it's Settle, relax, it's S-”

That's about when your ass leaves the floor. You seem to drift through space, floating freely, out-of-tune outside of the physical universe - and then you come *tearing* back into it in the most painful way possible. You reel around like a turtle on its back, stunned. You're not in Arizona's apartment anymore. You're at your promotion ceremony again, because all you see is stars, everywhere.
When your nerves and limbs start checking in again (rather loudly, too,) you manage to flop onto your belly - up onto your knee - reaching for the only weapon you've got left, a folding pocketknife. You manage to flick it out, but the room swims dangerously when you try to lurch to your feet. The noise is still raging across the room; in the darkness you can't quite tell who or what is going on.

By the time you've shaken off the stupor, the commotion is subsiding. Willie is hugging herself tightly, gibbering in terror - her fit-out in full evidence. Arizona's holding the girl off the floor in a bear hug, the floor sagging slightly under her weight - clearly full-metal at the moment.

Willie's gibbering subsides to hiccups by the time you manage to reach them, rubbing your chest, which aches like someone just fetched a blow to your breastbone with a baseball bat. You call out, gently - “Willie?”

She shivers, her eyes staring at you wildly, but not really focusing.

“Willie, are you okay?”

“I... I hit you...” she breathes raggedly. “T-t-the w-w-water, the- dark. Dark. DARK, DA-” she shrieks as you reach out and touch her head - her hair feels stringy and metallic under your hands; but you stroke it anyway, and she seems to rally. Her little mouth closes, and she starts to actually breathe through her nose again.

“... bread,” she breathes.

“What?”

“The bread,” she says simply. “I... probably made it fall.”

“No,” you object. “It's been so long, it probably rose alr-”

But Willie can't hear you. She's pulled her braid over her shoulder, gripping it with both hands - and pulling as hard as she can. You can hear it creaking like a thick docking hawser under strain, moments before it breaks and goes whipping across the deck with enough force to cut men in half. Her eyes are trickling tears as they stare blankly into the corner of the room, her skinny arms trembling as she tries to tear her own scalp off with all her might; only a weak, strangled keening escaping from her mouth.

Gripping her beneath the armpits, you tug at her insistently. Arizona's giving you a Look over Willie's head, but your own glare makes her flinch away, releasing her at once. You buckle under Willie's weight almost instantly, barely able to retard her fall to the floor. If the bread hasn't risen by now, it never will, because her impact makes the ceiling fixtures rattle faintly. You just lean forward and hold Willie as tightly as possible - you don't know what to say to this one, but at least you know what to do.

It's a fucked up place, this base.

It's a fucked-up war.

Aren't they all?

[ ] Take Willie home with you. You want to know what's lurking in her head, and this is your best chance to dig it out - by morning she'll be relatively composed again, clamming up just like you and Arizona and Naka and *everyone* does, because it's human nature. You spent weeks working on Naka - this is YOUR girl, and it's high time you paid her the attention she's due.

[ ] You really don't need another asskicking from, well, *everyone* because you took another technically unecessary risk. She just nicely demonstrated that a human cripple isn't the best one to attend to her night terrors. Go home and sleep on this .

The "IF YOU DIE IN THE GAME YOU DIE IN REAL LIFE" cliche is just awful.

It ignores the way people play video games and basically destroys all tension because you know certain characters will never die.

It's better if there are stakes other than "LOL YOU DIED FOR REAL". Log Horizon at least tried to do that, debatable how well it was done, but still.

And really Eve Online is a good example of those alternative stakes. Death in Eve Online is like any other game, even in universe. So what matters is not how perfect your combat skills are, but how well you can politick.

Indeed. The difference in expressions illustrates something, though. The General is... he's distanced enough to be amused, to a degree. A rather slight degree, but there's some wry, wrought-iron humor in it for him. "Is this retard for real?"

But the NCO, there? I can't tell ranks for shit, but I don't have to, here. It's one of Those NCOs. The ones who fucking run shit and terrify butterbars into silence with a single look. Has Arizona's room ever been described?

I'd be curious as to what's in it. Books, decorations, etc.
>>
(In which I figure out how to writefag, and Kentucky begins her ordeal.)

"USS Kentucky, ready for duty! Or I will be, soon enough!"

>She was meant to be the last. The last ship of the last class of battleships, the pinnacle of her kind.

>The bottom of her hull was barely finished before construction was suspended, and she was floated away to make room for other ships. Landing ships, of all things!

>They toy with the idea of converting her to an aircraft carrier for two years, but discard those plans and return her to the slipway. She'll be be a battleship... as soon as they can finish her. Work on her is low priority, and thus goes slowly, and is plagued by delays and suspensions. They even pause so they can think of turning her into an "anti-air battleship", before that too is discarded.

"Don't worry, the people on the docks haven't given up on me yet, so I won't! I'll be a battleship one day; the best there is!"

>Amidst one delay after another, the war she was made to fight ends. She is nervous, for there are whispers of budgets being cut back, but she refuses to lose hope. She will sail the seas one day, she thinks.

>She hopes.

"Eh, peacetime duty can't be that bad, right? Besides, they haven't stopped work on me yet! I'll sail outta here... someday."

> Looking out over the sink, you study Arizona's small apartment for something to do... except there's not much to study. Yours is no mansion; it's still filled with boxes and boxes of stuff you've never had time to unpack, but this room is literally empty. There's not so much as a dog-eared Reader's Digest discarded on an end-table, or a forgotten glass of dusty water on a coaster.
>>
>>46661797

>One day, she's floated off the slipway again, to make room for her sister Missouri. She's okay with this; this is not the first time she's been floated off the slipway before ready. Besides, at least this time she finally gets to talk to one of her sisters!

"Hi big sis!"

"Who... who are you?"

"USS Kentucky, last of the Iowa-class! Best damn battleship there ever was! ...Or I will be, when they finish me. They're taking a pause right now, but they'll be back at it in no time!"

"... How long have they been building you?"

" Five years, seven months and fifteen days, ma'am!"

>Some time later, she sees tugboats approaching. At first, she is confused. Missouri is still in the slipway being repaired, and she doesn't think they've opened up another one.

"Eh? H-Hold on! Missy ain't outta drydock yet!"

>They tow her away.

"Hey, where are you taking me? Missy where are they taking me!?"

"Hold on, I'll see what I can find out."

>After more than half a decade, USS Kentucky, whose hull is complete up to her second deck...

"Kentucky..."

"What took you so long? Oi! Shipyard's that way you glorified fishing boats!"

"... They're taking you to the mothball fleet. I'm sorry."

"..."

"Kentucky?"

>...has been deemed not worth the cost of completing. She is towed to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, to be used as a parts hulk

"Can I please go in?"

You look from face to face, the two nurses looking up and reading your expression. You look between the two, seeing your own 'brave' smile in their eyes--concern and hesitance masked with shaky confidence and the classic following-through-because-it's-too-late-to-back-out waver.

After a pause, one nods, believing you--or maybe you can't control the voice any more, you think with an internal wince--and pushes the button, the doors hissing open into Tatsuta's room.

She looks up at you with one good eye, the air pump's faint hum becoming a filling background in the room. Silence reigns, as she says nothing, simply staring at you through a mile of linen and antiseptic. A moment later, the nurse who guided you in turns away, and your eye hops to hers--crusted with dried discharge, neither thought about nor blinked away.

"Hey," you begin, giving her that wavering half smile. "Did I wake you?"

Silence.

It certainly doesn't make it any harder to play up the nervous act. "I talked to Tenryuu-san, and...well, she's really worried about you, you know?" Your smile falters, on cue. 'Help her,' Tenryuu had begged you. 'I can't.' "I just... wanted to wish you well, and hope you get better quickly, okay? Do your best." You throw a cutesy idol wink-and-a-wave in. "Do your best, Tatsuta-san!"

"Hhhhhhhh," Tatsuta's voice comes in a dry rasp, sung in duet with the air compressor.

"Y-yes?" you ask, taking a tentative step forward, one glove up to your chest.

"Hhhhhhhypocrite," she hisses, voice dissolving into a gurgling, pained chuckle. "I heard. I saw."

You let the nervous rah-rah routine die, throwing a theatrical look over your shoulder at the nurses you can't see, before you turn back to her, your expression cold.

Her laughter redoubles, until she coughs and nearly gags on the tube in her throat. "You want to die. You tried to kill yourself. And you dare--" Her voice trails off as she turns her head, letting the saliva drain from her thick tongue.

Okay, fine. Plan B, then.

"Yeah," you reply coolly, taking another step closer to her bed. "I do."

"Better luck," she wheezes, "next time."

"You have people who care about you," you tell her. "That's the difference between you and me. They actually want you, understand? You're going to leave Tenryuu alone?"

Her eye turns into an icy razor at the mention of her sister. "She'll be fine without me."

"Well, see, that's where you're wrong," you reply calmly, adjusting your gloves and pulling them taut, letting the claws stretch them out on display. "You saw, right?"

Slowly, she nods.

"You're right. I want to die." You lean forward, voice dropping to a deadly whisper, your eyes flashing blue over the edge of the colored lenses. "And they. Won't. LET ME."

Tatsuta stares right into them, undaunted. "So?"

"Look at me, Tatsuta. I'm a fucking monster. You know what my morning routine is? Spray-paint my hair back, then shower twice to hide the polyurethane smell, then an hour of makeup, and then it's Naka-chan, da yo~!" You mockingly strike a pose and wink, tongue out, peace sign waving.

"Ssssssso?" She repeats.

"So," you tell her, "I have to make them understand. There's nothing left here for me. But you, you have a future. People who care. You're just too afraid to live. Well, I'm going to make you too afraid to die."

Tatsuta's eye never falters, even as it hardens into a glare. You feel her fingers slowly crawling towards the nurse button.

"So it's like this," you continue. "If you let yourself die, I'm going to kill your sister."

Her vision bolts open, fingers digging into the bed. "You. Yyyyyyou..."

"Dunno if you've seen her, she's a wreck," you reply with a cold sneer. "I doubt she'd want to live without you anyway, so, she won't have to. Problem solved, right? You want to die so bad, what do you care?"

Her breathing picks up, heart rate spiking on the readout by her bed. You don't have much longer.

"I'll tell," she returns.

"Tried that," you reply, slowly letting the heat build. "I hear it constantly, now, you know that? The sea, calling me back. Turning me. I have to die, don't you get it? No one seems to understand that. But they won't let me sortie. So, here we are."

"You're bluffing," she snarls.

"Am I?" you examine your nails again, pushing a crushing lack of concern into your voice.

"When I get out of here," Tatsuta growls, "I'll kill you."

You look back up at her. "That's the plan. Get well soon."

Turning on your heel, you throw a casual wave over your shoulder and stride back out, switching back to the bubbly, cheerful persona as the doors close, knowing Tatsuta is watching you bow and smile at the nurses for letting you see your 'friend.'

You round the corner, their vision fading away, and wait there. A moment later, you can feel Harder's presence as his eyes take over.

"Are you done?" he asks.

You nod. "That will keep her going."

"I heard," Harder says, as he wraps around your side to guide you home.

You wilt at the morose note in his voice. "I was just telling her what she needed to hear."

After shuffling a little further away, in heavy silence, Harder stops walking. His weight drags you to a halt with him. "...How much of it was true?"

You turn to look at him, for all the good it does, staring at yourself. It feels like it's been forever since you've seen his face. You don't have an answer for him.

Harder throws his arms around you, squeezing you tight as you back up into the wall.

"I don't understand," he murmurs, tears hot on your neck, baring your skin tone where they fall. "I don't understand you."

You close your eyes, rubbing his back, cursing yourself inside. Who are you?, Harder keeps asking.

You still don't have an answer.

Yeah, brah, not that significant. Moreover, the point is - it'd force the Japanese into a Decisive Battle. Anytime after Midway our strength just kept growing in relation to theirs. Why hop up the islands? Why not just take them in a single pitched battle once we had some Essex-classes/new battleships/refloated Pearl victims ready to rock? Then we could just park off the shore and bombard them into the stone age. There's a wiki page for bombardments of the Japanese mainland - we didn't do it until the very closing days of the war.

See, I know the answer to this. Kind of curious if you do.

It is possible to make all the people happy all the time. Therefore, if a writer is making at least some people unhappy, all of the time, it's probably deliberate.

Is that the gist of it?

>Then we could just park off the shore and bombard them into the stone age.

Sure, except for the part where our BBs have to turn back after a few hours due to lack of ammo, our shiny new fleet gets pounded into the dust by waves of ground based aircraft, and our overstretched supply lines are shredded by the still intact Japanese fleet.

We'd actually been using the 45-degree sloped turret faces since Illinois BB-7, authorized in 1896 and commissioned in 1901, largely as a reaction to the massive gunports on the turrets for the Kearsarge class battleships, which then-Lieutenant (later Admiral) William Sims described as "the greatest crime ever committed against the White race."

Do you happen to have it? I want to use it in a paper I'm writing to see how much shit I can get away with.
>>
>>46662931
>But she's sweet as all get out!

That's not even English.
>>
>>46663054
Becuase Rex is written by someone sane.

>>46663058
no one wants time wasted on a literally who DD.
>>
>>46663054
Well, so far Rex has dealt with DesDiv6 (easy), and a semi-cowed Akebono (that flight scared the shit out of her, partially shocking her out of her 'fuck everything' mindset). Settle has to deal with the real crazy shit.

I'm sure if you shanghai'd Rex onto a date with, say, Zuikaku, shit may not go over so well.

Well, it's not like Rex was horribly traumatized in what is arguably one of the worst attacks on US soil since Pearl Harbor and 9/11...

I'm absolutely sure that's all there is to it.
>>
>>46663054
For one, he's actually not fucked in the head.
For another, DDs are actually kinda easy to handle.
>>
>>46663090
You need to brush up on your casual english. "As all get out" is a valid turn phrase, although Merriam-Webster has it as "as all get-out".
>>
>>46663058
>Exactly why she should be chosen. Give the filler cast more attention, rather than the 'main' DDs.

On one hand, this is why I voted for Miyuki earlier today.

On the other, there's a very large number of destroyers who are both more interesting than her and not in the main cast, including the ducks, most of the Kagerous, and all of tiny destroyer classes whose names I can't remember that got rushed built during the war.

If anything, it's the Yuugumo sisters, the lion's share of the Shiratsuyus (eg. not the name-shipgirl, Shigure, or Yuudachi), and the Asashio sisters that are 'literally who' destroyers.
>>
>>46663099
Hey, Merc, is there a place where all the destroyer dad pastes are linked? This is really good.

The Matsu and Tachibana classes?
I don't think those will show up, nor do they have canon designs (yet).

That too.
>>
>>46663101
DDs....Easy?

Shigure and Willie?
>>
>>46663168
I could have sworn one of them had appeared in game, since I knew they had another class of tiny elementary students, but then I looked it up to find the Asashio class.

So yeah, I going to say they're minor, and at least Kasumi probably has something interesting about her.
>>
>>46663196
Man, Fletchers are cute.
>>
>>46663216
Willie is fairly easy to deal with, beyond the perpetual bad luck. She's not really screwed in the head.
And most DDs are childish enough that being paternal enough does the trick. In Shigure's case it probably would've worked if she'd been caught early, but since it was let to fester for so long it grew into an Actual Problem.
>>
>>46663152
That doesn't say much as Fubuki is absurdly vanilla and is mainly remembered these days due being pushed in the game's early days and the anime.

>>46663216
if someone like Rex was around for Shigure, the incident would not have occured.
>>
>>46663216
There's always a few exceptions to every rule.

Though, to be fair, Shigure is making a recovery now. She wasn't always like that, and that episode of her life may have even been prevented had someone intervened earlier on.

Settle is batfuck crazy, news at 11.
>>
>>46663221
The devs said they'll show up eventually, and they'll look even smaller than the current crop.
Those DDs really will not be for lewds.

>>
>>46663296
Some are fairly lewdable. Urakaze, Hamakaze & the duckies, primarily.

Yuugumo and Naganami pack some pretty impressive canons under that school outfit, too.
>>
>>46663296
hard to say that with girls like these as DDs

>Kasumi
So looking it up, she's apparently the anti-Akebono. Specifically, just as Akebono is the least dere tsundere in the game, Kasumi is the most dere one. Further, she was also blamed for many failures, but instead she seems to have adopted a stiff upper lip.

Kasumi is pretty tsundere, but like you said, instead of being aggressive she's just standoffish. It also helps that she already got her K2 where she deres the most.
Akebono hasn't gotten hers yet. She'll probably dere hard, she's already showing it in her seasonal lines.

2018, IIRC. It's spring or summer in Japan, judging by the persistent mentions of the heat and the wearing of dress-whites (the summer uniform, by strict regulations).

I thought Planefag said it was 2018 when LA happened, and then another 16-18 months on top of that
>>
>>46663751
On that note, anyone but me starting to think Goto really is a Shit Admiral? First Shigure and Naka, now Akebono. Its like he spends so much of his time obsessed with running in fear from Kongo that he seems to be completely ignoring all the other ships girls in his selfish quest to make Kongo feel like shit. It makes me wonder how many other little "exclusive clubs" exist among the shipgirls and how many of them are excluded.
>>
>>46663878
Keep in mind who's writing him and how much is intentional for planefag's requirement for chaos.
>>
>>46663878
You have to remember that he went for the stoic approach that we have (seemingly) abandoned, while also having multiple times the number of shipgirls to tend to. So its probably a goddamn miracle that he has kept the base in one piece for this long without serious meltdowns happening.
>>
>>46663920
That sounds dangerously close to excusing incompetence. If he was overburdened he should have gotten additional support. When a couple of days from now the news story breaks that "Mutsu has beaten Ushio to death in a hazing ritual gone wrong" breaks Goto saying "I was hiding from Kongo because I thought was going to give me a love confession" ain't going to cut it. Its time to actively seek out some security clearences for this decidedly understaffed base.
>>
>>46663853
>>46663629
The answer is that it's 20XX, or 20 min into the future.
>>
>>46663986
>implying there was any available.

You are not looking at who's writing this.
>>
>>46664049
And then some busybody Japanese civilian sees Rex somewhere in public with one of the DD's and reports him as a pervert. He gets arrested for daring to walk next to a female in public, run out of the military to avoid a scandal. DDgirls rebel seeking justice, Goto seen as incapable of controlling them. Japanese citizens lose their shit in fear and demand the shipgirls be confined. Shipgirls with nothing to do with any of this get pissed for being to sentenced to house arrest for literally no reason, full scale rebellion explodes on base. Abyssals arrive with major force and ROFLStomp the weakened survivors.

Game over. Humanity ends.
>>
>>46662078
Sometimes I regret using LurK as a pseudonym.
>>
>>46664513
Calm your autism down as that wouldnt' happen when Planefag's writing it.

This is why SB has such a bad rep, people who can't keep their raging autisms in check.
