Case I: First Steps

Ah, the great city of Old paradise, where one day you are on the top of the top and the next you will find yourself in an alley-throat slit wide open.

It is up to me figure out which is which and who and who. They call me Grim as a homage to the slick guy who reaps them all. I don't like it but hey, it does the job.

It ain't easy, you have to look for clues, ask some witnesses and the whole Jam...sometimes i end up with a bullet or two in my noggin but when i catch the bad guy(s)....man oh man, it feels good, it is like my own version of Ash.
>>
It was a Saturday, a long one for me since i spent it rearranging my new office. Pesk, my personal Imp, flew through the window. Imps tend to have a short life span...20 years tops but Pesk gave the middle finger to the slick guy on numerous occasions, he is 26. I made a contract with him since nobody wanted a grizzly old Imp....and because said contract was cheap as hell.

"Master Grim! I got a case from the Bluemoons! Our very first case!" he had to sit down, otherwise his tiny heart would burst.

If you don't know, Bluemoons are the cops of Old Paradise. They leave the scraps for freelancers like myself...that and they rarely deal with any case with humans in it. In fact, I never see any humans in Bluemoon patrols.

Personally, I don't mind these fleshy bastards. they are a minority....a vocal one but a minority nonetheless.

"Where is it?" I asked, I was still fresh by then. Eager to straight jump into anything without a drop of reason.

Pesk scratched his head, He was sometimes slow...i couldn't blame him. i simply waited for an answer.

"Right, Idol's square, near the silver fountain. Good luck, Master Grim."

I was still green, fresh and naive. I opened it for the first time...the watchdog pocket mirror, a gift from an old friend. One of kind that trinket was. The glass was darker than my own hollow orbits. Its whispers were something out of this world "choose a persona" it said.

I could see them one by one; a hellhound with a keen sense of smell...the one who could track you to the end of the world.

A Golem of old. Thick skin and thicker mind but can reduce you and me to shattered bones.

A Human Seer, who is worth hundreds of old books and tome

A Silverfolk, the one with cunning tongue. None escapes his charms

A lone gazer, who can see everything around them, None escapes their eyes

I had to choose, The mirror doesn't take no for an answer.

The mirror Blessed/Cursed me with knowledge, it shut itself soon afterwards. I never tampered with the mirror until i hit the second case....

I remember having some trouble in placing my .38 perfectly, it took me a couple of minutes to slip the damn thing like i wanted. The office swallowed all i have. I had my .38, a couple of bullets, a pen, a very important notebook, some cigs, a crappy lighter, some identification paper and 300$ plus some change....

It was midnight,I ordered a cap, the streets were flooded with a mixture of sewer and rain water. A silverfolk was driving this one. A young lad...50 maybe 60 years old. He didn't utter a word; he focused on the slippery road.

-Pesk needs 50$ per month
-Don't forget to water Mary and pay a damn visit to you brother.
-14 Bullets!
-[Doodle of lewd bones]

yeah, I wasn't that much of an artist. I closed the notebook and turned my attention to the driver "How are you today, pal?"

The driver chose to ignore me. Rude.

The silverfolk took 30$ for this relatively short ride. Acceptable. He quickly left the scene.

Idol square was built in the early twenties, it was a larger chapel for the silverfolk for their goddess 'Idol' but the place was burnt to the ground by an unknown arsonist...rivers of Black and white silver flooded the city back then...Our economy was failing at that time so everyone grabbed a dwarven bucket and started to scoop the molten corpses of the silver folk. That is why they hate pretty much every other race. I am no judge in determining who is right and who is wrong, i will leave that to you.

Moving on, The crime scene barely had anyone around it; just a couple of Bluemoons securing the area and a Gazer child who was in some sort of a shock, The Bluemoons learnt their lesson this time; the elven corpse was untampered....wait....elven?

"You are late Grim," said Officer Izrele, like me, She was a skeleton. A stubborn one whom i don't like so much but she handles the shaky contacts between us. Skeleton women are the hardest to please in general.

I had no time for pleasantries, i need to get this case done as soon as possible.

I started with the head first. It was pale, his mouth had some white-bluish foam, his eyes and nose were blue while his ears were sliced off via a clean cut. Possibly a knife. Heh. Knife ears. A recent bump on the back of his head was noted.

The torso looked normal to me. A strange symbol was found near his midsection [Seer] Wild magic, Elven Wild Magic...raw and primitive and outlawed inside the city limits [Seer]. Several bruises are found near the midsection as well.

Legs were recently shattered, splinters of bone protruded the skin.

Arms looked normal to me, Both were tied to a rope.

No belongings were found but the victim's clothes, his identity is still unknown.

A small thing about gazer, they can possess a lot of eye from a measly 20 to 2000, it always looks funny on their broccoli-like head. They do hate being stared at which in turn gives most of them anxiety when dealing with non-Gazers.

I 'yawned' "i want to hear a bedtime story, may be about what happened in the last hour or so. I feel really *really* sleepy."

The kid shied away from my terrible act. I could hear a giggle from behind.

"Alright, Alright, I will drop the act. I want you to help but so i can help you in return. How about some greens? Five in particular?"

In a tick, his tentacle coiled around the five bucks ,they were simply gone in an instant. One eye slowly opened, its purple pupil was fixed on my hollow orbit.

"I...I didn't see anything-"

"What? don;t try to scam me , kid."

"I...heard it all. The vroom of a car...and something being dragged. A woman said something and....and i heard a snap! A tree snap. the woman grunted in pain and left with the same vroom from earlier. I-i opened my eyes and i-i saw him...h-him in the fountain." the kid started to cry, it was no use trying to get anything else from him.

"It kind of worked, didn't it?" you replied "So why i am on this one? Bluemoon can surely handle this case."

"We sure can." said Izrele "But i wanted you to have some bucks in your pocket after your recent financial blow. but here you are questioning the ways of the Bluemoon."

The crime scene was still to be examined.

The fountain has some small bloodstain on its edge.

A small blood trail started from the victim's position and ended in a curvy fashion at the other side of the street.

A faint aroma still lingers in the air near the fountain, can not track it or identify it.

A couple of dried leaves were found near the victim [Seer] These are not normal leaves, these are magical remnants of wild Elven magic. A weak spell by the looks of it. [Seer]

Small specks of silver blood were found near the fountain, most of them were wiped in a hurry.

From what i have gathered, i can make a small deduction about what happened here...

Someone came by, at least one woman. She carried the guy who was probably dead or severly injured by then. The some spell took place. The kid probably heard the treesnap, amd we found the leaves due to that.

Maybe the ears were cut once the body was brought here, thats what I gather from the wiped blood.

The closet lead I had was the symbol on his midsection, I had to follow it somehow.

'Follow the spider, Follow its lair of knowledge' i love this idiom; most of the idioms i know are strictly false but not this one. There was a nightclub not far from here, spiders and vamps do frequent it for its unorthodox style.

sumop & sbn or Ups & downs for the normal people. It took me half an hour to reach the club on foot. A brute Orc bouncer blocked the way but once i showed him my paper, he allowed me to enter. Ups and downs had nothing to hide from the Bluemoons....there are one of the few 'honest' club.

It was so strange to walk on the 'ceiling'. A handler spider was slowly stalking me waiting for me to ask him for a lift to the floor for a price but luckily the woman i was looking for did so first. Lady Vanzula gently grabbed me taking extreme care with her bone-crushing extremities.

"Grim, Grim, Grim... What a lovely pleasure to see you. If only you would have come just a but earlier; we had a quality time with a cute skeleton. we paid a lot for her too..."

I dropped another 20$ on Sapprion extract for my spider friend, extremely thick and viscous but the aftertaste is wonderful. Skeletons can taste stuff, sure, but it simply drops in their hollow husk soiling their clothes so i had to decline.

We had a talk, things have been alright for Vanzula. She misses my brother, i promised her that the next time i go to visit him, i will take her as well....better write that down in the note.

As for the elves, there was a small band of elves selling Silver Lobites in the sewers , One of the plants that can make the Ash drug, these plants must be fermented in liquid silver for an extended period of time, it also relies on constant magical buffs for stable growth, otherwise, it would simply wither in days. I was surprised to hear that the place was burnt down last week with all the elves in it. Bluemoon is said to have razed the place but Vanzula believes otherwise.

I trust my Spider lady more than some fake police source.

She suspects a silverfolk might have brunt the place. I thanked her for her help and exited the nightclub.

But now i am in a dead end. I may want to visit the place in the sewers but the Bluemoons would have cleaned this place up. At least i got a good motive.

As I was towards the main street, a speeding car drove over the pavement to run me down, I....

It was stupid, I know, But i actually jumped towards the speeding car crashing into the windshield, it was better than being crushed to bits under a cab....wait a cab?

It's him! the same driver who brought me to the crime scene, he was sweating and panicking upon my unexpected action. He had no gun, no knife...nothing. Bad move, kiddo.

We struggled a bit, but he was weak even for a skeleton. I pulled him out of the car and i pinned him down before landing harsh jabs on his face.

He was shaking between each hit "S-stop....please stop! I am sorry!"

I lighted up a cigarette, with no lungs, it was a win-win situation for me. He still didn't open his mouth "Come on now, I already know that didn't kill the elf .... you don't have the guts for it.I bet you didn't harm a soul in your life...unlike the woman who was with you. She did the dirty deed, no? you were simply driving her from point A to point B."

I can feel him, slowly cracking under the crushing pressure of simple words "How was the visit to the sewers by the way? This woman of yours sure hate those pesky knife ears..."

"STOP! i won't rat out my fucking sister Just sto-" his eyes widening and i couldn't help to arch a smile on my face "Congratulations, you just got your sister caught....can you keep an eye on him please?" The Orc nodded.

It was time to examine the Cab.

A really burnt picture of a family of 8-10

An old small book written in an odd language [Seer] with the symbols of Idol, the goddess of the Silverfolk. The Sacrificial ritual section was torn apart [Seer]

As expected, the trunk was Bloodied; some dried out while other were fresh. The same nice aroma i smelt back in the fountain came from here as well. Nice Job trying to cover it up, Valero.

A bag full of Elven ears was found, there were at least ten pairs. She didn't just burn them....no she probably singlehandedly slaughtered them all by one mean or another. Either that or there are more players in the scene. I tried to look for any hidden compartment but i found none. Shame.

No murder weapon were found. Valreo wasn't that stupid, I guess.

I quickly scanned the front seat but i couldn't find anything useful.

With enough evidence, I can mostly deduce what has happened.

>>46671900
The Migsini family took their hostage to the fountain. His legs were already broken since the trunk is bloody. The victim was possibly assaulted since he has sever bruises. Maybe they ganked him. They dumped the body, and the spell took place leaving the dry leaves behind.

Is it possible the spell activated accidently? Perhaps due to the cutting off of the ears? Injuring the cutter a bit leaving the silvery blood behind?
>>
>>46672069
Check Valero for fresh cuts. Hands, arm or face.
>>
>>46671900

The Migsini family performed a raid on the grow ip and slaughtered the Elves working there, burning the place behind them to cover their tracks, this particular elf escaped the fight and they tracked him here where they had to kill in public instead. He put up a fight with his magic (leaving the silvery blood) but was overwhelmed
>>
>>46672069
doesn't look likely that the spell activated by accident as they seem to have researched about the ritual before hand, from the book in the cab at least.

Fifteen minutes later, the street was swarmed with Bluemoon.

Izrele was there as well, she was a bit astonished for my swift detective work. I spilled the beans. This particular moment sparked some respect from other Bluemoons, I handled myself well. I am proud of that.

Valero was confined in a solitary cell for the next 80 years for his current involvement , it would have been a 160 years if i haven't drop my charges in his poor attempt of murder. We are all victims here. I couldn't blame him for his actions.

As for his Sister, Carisa Migsini, she was on her last breaths when we found her, twitching in her own puddle of puke. she was poisoned by our elven victim. It wasn't the weak poison that killed her...

No, it was the deal she made.

This Idol is a two faced godless; Mercy and Vengeance. Behind her brother, She made a deal that empower her beyond measures....but with every kill she scores, she would lose twenty years of her life on earth.

She lost 200 years of her life just to avenge her goddess. that is more than your average Silverfolk life span. A sneeze would have killed her.

The fountain was built on Idol shrine, she killed the weakest and the last of the elves at the fountain as a tribute to her goddess.

Such a damn shame. But i was well paid; 800$ is some good money in my books.
