You lie awake in the middle of the night. The dark and silent atmosphere of your bed chamber stands in contrast to the loud, chaotic turmoil in your head. With Vanessa gone, and once turned against you, the potential loss of a child, and the death of one of your most powerful underlings, not to mention the assimilation of an entire country into your territory, you have too much running through your mind to rest peacefully. After several hours of pointless stillness and quiet, you grow too tense to remain in bed, and sit up. You pull on your dressing gown and pop on your slippers. With any luck, either the night air
or some light exercise will tire you out enough to get a few hours before sunrise.

You step out of the bedroom and into the hall. Two Hellraisers salute you silently on either side, swiftly standing at attention and then moving back to rest once you are a few feet away.

The air is chilly, and the sound of crickets is faint but distinct. Even the summers in the north are cold, but it's a brisk sensation to someone who spends most of his time in heavy black steel plates and thick quilts. The city itself is relatively silent. With a curfew enforce to restrict the movement of would be troublemakers, most are indoors asleep, or at least minding themselves rather than out and about at this hour.

This is the thought that runs through your mind as you notice a dim light just down the road and around the corner. Curious, you approach, with intent to discover its origin. When you arrive, shifting from a powerful stride to a sophisticated pad, you can hear voices. You sidle up to the corner and peek around.

You spy two minions, dressed neatly in their uniforms and wearing scarves over their heads to fight the chill. They murmur to one another outside of a small tavern, who's lights are snuffed. They seem to be discussing something, when all of a sudden the tavern door creaks open, and someone ushers them inside. After they enter, the door slowly swings shut, and the bolt clicks into place.

You would usually be suspicious, but you know that some of the new recruits have been sneaking off on patrols to see their loved ones in the city. It hasn't been any trouble as of yet, but you haven't caught any as of yet either.

You step closer to the tavern door, doing your best to soften the sounds of your feet hitting the stone street. As you come closer, you can hear voices inside, only more clearly now. You cannot see who is speaking, but if you peer through the window you might spot someone. This might also expose you.

You press your ear to the door and listen carefully.

"Shen was a mad dog, He needed to be put down. I'm only sorry it wasn't sooner. Did you see what he did to our master?"

"I'm not saying he wasn't a pain, but we should have let the dark lord handle him."

"He dared to scratch his body with those filthy hands!"

"Keep it down! Do you want to get us caught? Now look, we all agree Shen had to go sooner or later, what's done is done. We should focus on what's important. How's the treatment going?"

"Puh-lease, my brews are the best around. We'll probably see results in a few days."

"I'm glad you're confident, because if anything goes wrong I'll send you to see that eastern dog."

"You wanna fight?"

"With Duncan and Legion off to check on the fortress, and Shen filling a ditch somewhere in the graveyard, most of our best players are out of commission. That's really bad news."

"Ha! The Hellraisers are worth twice what Legion is."

"Big talk, coming from you. Considering."

"Damn it, stop! Why can't you go one meeting without squabbling like cocks!"

"Fine, whatever, just get to the point."

"Agreed."

"Ugh. We need to secure the heir. That was my teacher's last order. With the treatment under way, all we have to do is make sure she rests and gets her nutrition."

"And what if you-know-who catches onto us before then?"

"We'll face him when it comes to that."

The room on the other side of the door goes quiet for a moment. You wonder if they're preparing to leave, until one of them speaks again.

"What about you? You've been quiet."

"I'm merely musing on how absurd this all is. Hiding in the dark, right under his nose. Why not just tell him?"

"Because we're the only people we know we can trust. We're bound by blood. Now that we have one comrade turned traitor-"

"She's not a traitor."

"Right, she's only a backstabber and a thief."

"Don't talk about her like that!"

You hear a thud, and a crash, followed by a gasp and the beginnings of a ruckus on the other side of the door.

You stand up straight and press on the wooden door with one hand. With little effort, the hinges and bolt both give way, and the door falls inward, clattering on the ground. The room beyond is near pitch black, but you can see the silhouettes of four people of varying size, all turning in shock as you enter, lit by the moon and stars. Two of them reach for weapons, and the others raise their hands as if to beg for mercy.

You summon your sword, casting it's fiery light across the room. The four kneeling figures whince and turn away, but one by one they reveal their faces. Before you are Kyle, Marigold, Caitlyn, and Gilbert. Marigold and Caitlyn are dressed in minion uniforms, but the other two are wearing their normal clothes. They shy away from your gaze, but you continue to look upon them with a knitted brow. You order them to explain, and Marigold answers, approaching you on all fours like a scared pup.

"My dark lord, please forgive us. We, along with the others, have been meeting in secret for some time, to discuss strategy and pool resources. Ever since Vanessa left us. Please, please understand that we would never work against you. Our purpose here is righteous. We have gathered to foster the care of your unborn, the true heir to your glory, with the guiding hand of Lady Sophia herself."

Just to note:
we should probably have a conversation with our ex wife soon, ask her to see to vanessa learning more about her demonic side and all the bedroom shazz.

1) its a good way to give payback without actually doing any harm
2) it embaresses the hell out of our little girl, which any right minded father wants to do.
3) we dont have to deal with the birds and the bees talk with vanessa.
4) it also makes us seem at least amicable to the hell bitch, which might stop her throwing cogs into our works for a while.

This time Kyle speaks up, relieving Marigold of the stress.

"Lady Sophia told us all of her suspicion at one of our meetings. She had show the early signs, and us being hopeful, we promised to support her through the ordeal. When she was attacked by the traitor Caela, Sophia begged us to save the child, and so Caitlyn has been giving her a strong healing tincture since her admission to the hospital." Here, Caitlyn cuts in, her voice wavering.

"It's an old recipe, and experimental, but it was the only hope we had. I had no time to test it, but Lady Sophia claims she feels stronger because of it. I had planned to have one of the healers examine her soon, to check for signs of life within her belly, but it's too early to tell as of yet." Marigold speaks again.

"Please, my dark lord, understand that all we have done has been for you. We kept it from you to keep it from Vanessa, who we have deemed untrustworthy since her departure."

There is a painful popping in your ears as she severs the connection. You rub the side of your head, and look around the dark room. The window, slightly cracked, reveals the promise of approaching sunlight. Your eyes begin to feel heavy suddenly, especially after another swig of the vodka. You roll over, setting the bottle on the ground, and lay prone on your mattress. The cricket song dies down, making way for the cry of roosters, as you fade out of consciousness.

Some hours later, you stir and wake in the bed. Someone has come and laid a quilt over you. You throw it off and stand, stretching out before summoning your armor. It's uncertain, but you suspect it's nearly noon. You've slept through the morning meeting, but it's not as if there's anything too new to worry about. For now, you should find something to do while you wait for things to change.

You make the trek to the hospital, where Sophia remains guarded around the clock by hellraisers and minions alike. The revelation of the previous night makes the presence of your elite fighters, commanded by Marigold, seem very intentional. You suspect she has them under orders to report to her if Sophia shows any negative health signs.

Sophia herself is dozing, with a small novel in her hands. When you enter, she perks up, and greets you.

"You're kind to visit me so often, my dark lord. Do you need something from me today?'

Sophia tenses up, and you see a little color fill her otherwise pale face. She sets the book down and clears her throat.

"I see. I'm fine with that, if you are. Well, I'm very hopeful. I'd like to think that I can still carry it. But after Caela attacked me, I can't be certain, and that's assuming your...er... seed took."

You think for a moment. You'd like to think you're virile enough to conceive easily, but the honest truth is you've only ever planted one seed, and it was with a woman with the ability to activate her own reproductive system at will.

"Er, I don't mean to accuse you of being impotent, or course. I only mean that the odds are slim, even for two healthy partners."

>"When were you going to tell me about the treatments?"
>"Don't worry yourself too much. You're worth more to me than your womb."

You promise to come back later, when Sophia is rested. She seems happy as you leave, and head down to the ground floor and the training grounds where your minions practice at war.

Days turn to weeks. Legion and Duncan report in from the fortress. Things seem to be alright, but Cruz' sword is indeed gone, and none seem to know where it went, even in the nearby settlements. Neige falls in line, and the people accept their new fate. The Solari retreat to their home, and begin closing themselves off on all sides. And finally, Caitlyn comes to you with a major discovery, which leads you to summon your advisors to an emergency meeting.

You set up a room with a table, and watch as Caitlyn sets up a large cork board with various pages and sketches pressed into it. The group listens intently as she speaks.

"Basically, the North Star, which is supposed to hold the power of the Ancient Dragon Jotun, is really part of a set of artifacts from before the Starstorm, the origin of all mortal life in the world. There is the North Star, the Fire Pinion, the Eye of Maturin, and the Dragon's Soul. Keep in mind these are rough translations, since they're all supposed to be resting in distant locations across the world. Long story short, with all four of these things, we'd not only be the most powerful group in the mortal realm, we might have enough power to overthrow the Demon Princes."

Marigold, Kyle, and Gilbert are surprised, but they don't know the gravity of that statement. The true princes of hell are older than time, and their souls predate the nine pits themselves. To kill even on would be to rewrite the fabric of existence.

>"I don't think you know what you're saying, Caitlyn."
>"Interesting. Do you have any leads on them?"
>"These sound too good to be true. Which means they probably are."

You tell Caitlyn that something this powerful just doesn't seem reasonable. She snickers, tapping her pointer on her palm.

"You might be right, but think of it this way. We'd only need one to prove my theory, and as of right now I know where two of them are. Vanessa took one, and the other, the Fire Pinion, is located far to the south, enshrined within a temple dedicated to a god of the sun. If we got it, Gilbert and I could run tests, and if it really is as strong as the legends claim, we might accelerate our long term time tables by hundreds or even thousands!" Caitlyn waves her pointer in the air, but the room is unconvinced. Gilbert is first to speak out.

"These legends have no real base in reality. If you believed every tall tale, there would be a plethora of melted mountains, floating islands, and talking trees. This gem, the North Star, is nothing more than a trinket placed at the center of a silly religion. We would be better served focusing our time and resources into tangible assets, such as weapons and armor."

The two of them glare at one another fiercely. The room feels a bit warm.

One thing leads to another. We need resources to aquire one of the gems anyway, and if the gems are as powerful as you suspect, then it might be a good idea to keep them seperate.
Upsetting the balance of the planes has never gone well for anyone involved.

You agree with Caitlyn, and decide to make finding these artifacts a priority. Gilbert scoffs, but does not protest, and Caitlyn grins smugly.

You disband the meeting and order Caitlyn, Gilbert, and Kyle to begin looking into the location of the Fire Pinion. Marigold returns to tending her men, and you go to see Sophia.

Her room isn't empty today, as a healer sits beside her bed, examining Sophia's nude body. She seems slightly shy, but doesn't hide from you. You can see the scars from her injuries, which have not healed cleanly due to being healed by magic. Her breasts seem fine though, but you don't know whether you notice them because of the thought of a child nursing, or your own personal uses for them. The healer stands and greets you with a smile.

"Afternoon, my dark lord. I have good news. Lady Sophia will be ready to walk on her own within the week."

The healer opens her mouth, but stops short of speaking. She turns to Sophia, who is all but glowing with pride.

You give Sophia a silent thumbs up.

As summer becomes fall, the book closes on the year of the invasion of Hielon. With things settled here, you pack and begin the long march home to your fortress. You ride alongside a large wagon, stuffed full of pillows, quilts, and maids who tend to Sophia as she rests in the back, happily basking in the glow of her triumph over the specter of death.

The journey is long, and winter begins to creep in by the time you arrive. With the first snow comes a message from your ex wife, telling you that things are almost ready, and soon Vanessa will be returned to you.
