>You are one of three characters: Samson, a spoiled bard, Dyrus, an axe-wielding rebel's son, or Rene, an orphan adopted by a high-ranking Director of an ominous empire, now a prepromoted archer-lancer. POV will rotate between them on a thread-by-thread basis, with an off-chance that someone else might occasionally take a chapter.

>These protagonists' motivations and goals will very likely come into conflict with one another's.

>Character Death is always a possibility and sometimes an inevitability (this is Fire Emblem after all), but your actions can very easily influence who lives and who dies.

Though the Empire does make things a little harder on Samson's precious little life, as does the fact that everything his family didn't bring with them had been pilfered from the house they now share with five more people than once before, things do return to some sense of normalcy as he pretends to be back to living his civilian scholarly life, often singing and gathering information in taverns with Millicent's help. Imperial soldiers expect to be shipped back East to deal with rebels, and from there the plan will begin.

Speaking of these more organized rebels, Dyrus and the rest of his gang sail towards Darton, still heavy of heart at the utterly preventable loss of Gerard, but coping nonetheless. They're certain he wouldn't want them to dwell on that sort of thing. Winona and Belle have taken to speaking more, filling the hole in the purple-headed flier's conversational quota, though she doesn't seem terribly pleased with the girl's insistence that she'd seen her somewhere before they met... Dyrus, meanwhile, is just excited to give Director Waldrick what-for! He won't let any more of his friends fall to the forces of evil like Augustus or Gerard!

In Arsiv Oasis, specifically the Tower of Longevity, Rene, Veiz, and the rest of the gang study between Vautou-repelling missions. Veiz is taking to dark magic quite well, though still refusing to actually break it out until she considers herself sufficiently skilled enough in both bow and book. Stories of the Resistance rallying support along the coastline have reached Director Waldrick's daughters, especially since he's to be personally handling the reins of a planned siege on Darton once the rebels arrive there, but it does not concern Rene or Veiz. It's not as though their father would ever lose to such people.

You are now Rene, in the middle of a bit of reading (Veiz recommended it, which is testament enough to just how little the novel interests you. You love your sister, but she needs better taste). Director Cato and Lord Denim have instructed the lot of you to be ready to be warped out at any point.

You and Marduk have still made absolutely no progress in the field of mounted archery, to the point where you think it just wasn't meant to be. You STILL get anxious just flying like that, let alone stabilizing yourself enough to shoot consistently.

You'd actually considered becoming a Bow Knight at one point during your studies, but you embarrassed yourself the first several times you tried, as well as discovering that you were far more proficient with the lance...

That being said, the Emperor trained in his youth to be a Silver Knight, a mounted wielder of bows and lances alike, so perhaps mounted combat isn't completely out of your future...

Something to think about, you suppose, but this continent's horses are not bred for desert travel, so now's not the time to entertain mastering the art as it is.

For now, so long as you have free time, you might as well...

Someday, you tell yourself, you will master this art, perhaps by taking on a new master in the Ger region, but until then...

One of the basement levels of the tower has a multi-purpose practice range, which you use to hone your skills as a more mundane archer.

Veiz is also down there, nodding towards you in acknowledgement once you step in before resuming her own target practice. Various dummies of assorted size and build have been enchanted to move and dodge in a way she describes as "almost humanlike," in order to better train for what she REALLY needs to be learning archery for.

"Oh, and who set this up?" You ask, taking aim and firing, taking aim and firing, taking aim and firing.

"Yours truly, of course! It's a quite simple spell to have them jerk around for a few minutes... Sadly, they cannot be commanded in as complex ways as I had hoped, and the effects are temporary, so there goes my idea of an army of immortal mannequins."

"Can they not be improved?" You ask Veiz. "I don't know as much of magic as you, but I know it's a field with wide amounts of potential... Perhaps with time, they can be turned into fighters in their own right."

"Yes, but the keyword is 'with time,' Rene," Veiz says, firing at one. "As it is now, they cannot even be made to properly fly with this spell. Otherwise, they would be much better practice for facing Vautou... Repelling them, even, with further development. Even still, the projected amounts of magical essence for such an undertaking as flying puppet soldiers..."

Veiz goes on about magical terminology you can hardly wrap your head around, and once it looks like a break in conversation has been reached, you ask, "would you mind lending this life to some of my own targets? It certainly has its training applications in its current stage..."

"You need not even ask," Veiz says. She shuts her eyes, and a dark aura briefly surrounds a few more of the dummies, before they jerk unsettlingly for several moments. Noting your expression when she reopens her eyes, she gives you a sympathetic look. "They... Do that at first. It will pass momentarily."

"Right..." You sigh. "I'll get used to it, don't worry."

The targets are, indeed, not quite up to snuff with real living opponents, but their movements make for a rudimentary simulation. It's mildly more engaging than the alternative, you suppose.

You quietly train for awhile, feeling your sister closing the gap between the two of her with talents of her own. It's... Slightly intimidating as well as relieving. On the one hand, she's moving onto something you can't really feel obligated to one-up her in, but on the other she's distancing herself from what was once a sweet little rivalry.

Little sister's growing up so fast...

"...are you alright?" Veiz says, noticing your sentimental look. "You've zoned out."

Shaking yourself out of your thoughts, you look to notice the dummies, lying once again lifeless. "Yes, I'm alright," you say. "I was simply lost in thoughts."

Veiz shrugs. "Alright, then. Be certain to return that book to me once you're done."

"Will do."

You and Veiz clean up after yourselves before she exits the basement level.

Feeling grateful for all the help Cicero has been, as a friend, a comrade-in-arms, and a butler, you decide it would be appropriate to treat him for once.

It's a simple gesture, tea and a light lunch for the two of you, but one which he good-naturedly questions anyway.

"Is there some occasion I've forgotten?" He asks as he sits, served the best you could brew. "Your birthday is still weeks away, and that's not something one would prepare for herself anyway..."

"Nothing in particular," you say. "I just thought I ought to express my gratitude for all of your dedication."

"Oh, you needn't prove anything of the sort to me!" Cicero promises. "Your delight is extra compensation enough for the position."

"I figured you would say that," you say, "but your humility only makes me want to express my gratitude even more!"

"Well, I certainly appreciate it," Cicero says, partaking in the goodies you'd prepared for the occasion.

You yourself do as well, of course, but find yourself frowning reflexively. You don't think you mangled it by any stretch of the imagination, but it's certainly nothing compared to your loyal butler's.

Noting your dissatisfied look, Cicero grows slightly anxious. "Have I offended you, Rene? I'm terribly sorry if I implied this gesture didn't mean a lot to me! It does, it honestly does!"

"I know, I know!" You say, calming the bearded butler. "You've never done anything to offend me, Cicero... I just worried that it wasn't to your liking!"

"Of course it was!" He says, "it was made as a gesture of kindness, after all..." regaining his composure. "I apologize for losing my composure."

"It's... Fine," you say, chuckling lightly. "You get anxious so easily for a butler, you know?"

"Well, I mean!" He says, readjusting his posture. "When the Director of an entire region signs your paychecks, there is an unstated pressure to go above and beyond..."

"I know, but you've always seemed like this!" You respond. "So... Nervous, eager to please."

"Rene," he says, turning more serious, "you and August... made one of the darkest times in my life tolerable. I'd recently lost my parents, and you remember how people would say such awful things of me, accuse me... And yet you started the events which would bring that to an end."

"I mean, all I did was tell August..." You say. "It was all I could do!"

Smiling and turning an even more brilliant red, you try to lean slightly forward, but just end up laughing awkwardly in the attempt and leaning back in your seat.

"What? What is so funny?" Cicero asks.

"It's just..." You breathe in deeply, trying to regain your composure, "I'm not very good at this..."

"No, no, your setup was very satisfactory!" Cicero promises, not quite getting what you mean. "I could even show you how to improve it if you would like."

"No, no, that's not what I mean..." You clear your throat once more. "What I meant was... Intimacy and the like."

"Intimacy?" Cicero asks, thick hair hiding whether or not he's flustered by your word choice. "What ever do you mean?"

"W-well, suffice to say that... That I'm really glad we've known each other so long. When I was brought to the islands, I was... Really worried that we would never see one another again. I kept writing to you for years and years anyway, but I thought I might never have the chance to see you again."

"When you word it like that, it was... Cruel of me to neglect to mention that I was training to act as a retainer to your family. Again, I'm sorry for causing unnecessary anxiety."

"No, no, you sought to surprise me, and it did! I was so delighted to see you again, and it's been fantastic working with you in person, and... It still had me uncertain for awhile."

"It feels awful seeing you face danger as you do, worries me sick whenever we go out to fight..." You admit, still beet-red.

"Well, just... say the word and I can remain behind," Cicero offers, looking grim a moment. "It would pain me to leave you to fend for yourself when my strength and my staves could save lives, but if you truly wish for that..."

"No, no, don't get me wrong!" You belt out. "There is still hardly anyone I would rather have by my side! I wasn't certain what these things racing through my mind had meant before, but... But I've put a lot of thought into it!"

"Rene, you don't mean to..." The butler holds his tongue just short of whatever he had hoped to say.

"Cicero, I think-No, I'm certain now-my feelings toward you extend beyond friendship."

"R-Rene..." Cicero looks about ready to freak out at such things being out and said. "I... You, w-we... After all these..." And finally, he regains his composure, "yes, I... Suppose that makes sense of much of my own confusion," Cicero says. "I told myself that that COULDN'T be it, and yet... I cannot deny myself when you word it like that."

"W-wait, you mean..." You look taken aback.

Quickly taking your hand, Cicero nods. "Oh, yes, Rene, I love you too! To heck with properness, if this would make you happy, then know that my heart is yours!"

The moment is full of happy silence from there, neither of you quite sure what to say next. You... Suppose you can work out what this all means for the future another time, but for now...

Keeping quiet about yourselves for the moment, you and Cicero resume being prepared for anything. Naturally, you vow to have each other's backs in particular this battle, intent on defying that old-as-time cliche of hooking up just before one or the other meets an untimely end.

"Today," Denim summarizes for your party, "we're going to be reclaiming territory that has already fallen to the winged raiders. A group led by a lancer named Corduroy is currently occupying the former human settlement of Hawk Oasis, formerly our closest settlement to the coastline in the desert region. The local townspeople had just barely survived a skirmish with pirates who had opted to venture North, and Corduroy and his men slaughtered all but a small band of survivors right under our noses."

"Doubtlessly they've secured their claim on the oasis, since the few survivors had to trek through the desert for days on end to report this!"

"So they're gonna be stronger, in greater numbers... Doubtlessly more confident in their new little conquest," Marduk says.

"Aye," Cato says in turn. "We need to cut down every last one we find in there."

"Will that really be necessary?" Cato asks. "There are certainly birds with no knowledge of war in Hawk by now..."

"You've said it yourself, Denim," Cato chides. "The culture that's brought them up is one of violence and banditry... We'll only be victims of a surprise counterattack if we leave anyone alive!"

"...I won't question your judgement," Denim says, brushing off the cover of his tome.

"We must be prepared to do anything we must to bring an end to the Vautou threat," you say.

"Exactly," Cato says. "We'll be attacked on sight once we draw close, so we'll be warping into the middle of the city... Utilize the element of surprise to its fullest."

"So... We appear out of the blue and open fire," Denim says, even more neutral in tone than usual.

"They're your orders, I suppose..." Marduk grumbles.

"I can't wait!" Saye shouts out, transforming in preparation for warping. "This is gonna be good..."

"...I will stand by Lady Veiz," Alfred says through his layers, clutching the handle of his sheathed killing edge.

Veiz, Cicero, and Omar are all silent, looking resolute, thoughtful, and outright uncomfortable respectively. Omar opens his mouth once or twice, but never gets a syllable in, and the lot of you join together to be warped by Cato.

In a flash, you find yourself in a town somewhat larger than Arsiv Oasis, built around an impressive set of walls.

Several Vautou turn their heads towards the suddenly-appearing Imperial agents, with assorted expressions of apprehension, fear, or outright anger.

About a dozen draw closer, drawing close-ranged weapons, while others fly back a bit or go into assorted buildings. Could they be readying their arrows?

You're naturally more inclined to fire at armed ones coming right for you than you are the civilians, and so you do!

Denim, eyes shut in thought, clutches his Excalibur tome and kneels in the sand as he mumbles something under his breath.

Director Cato, meanwhile, starts tossing Yotsmungands at anything winged that isn't her loyal second-in-command.

"This city is not yours, raiders!" Cato shouts out.

As the initial wave is cut down, some start to flee, while others still, armed or otherwise, fly right into battle.

Saye gets over her "further teleportation than before" induced sickness and leaps into battle, tearing some poor archer's wings off before smashing him into the ground in front of others. You notice her transformed form's fur grow... Darker, crimson in some places, and her strikes grow even more ferociously powerful as she bounds away.

Marduk's face distorts into an uncomfortable sort of grimace, and he yanks Omar onto his mount. "Stick with me," he says. "I won't get shot down because I didn't bring a healer."

"Is-is everything alright, Sir Marduwoh-!" Omar's question is cut off when Marduk flies over to a large crowd of Vautou on his not-quite-own.

"Urgh... Wh-what is he thinking?!" Veiz comments as she aims her Bright Bow at another opponent. Alfred simply stands guard until a sword-brandishing Vautou gets too close for comfort, and only then does he critically strike through him.

You see the form of Saye leaping over rooftops a slight distance away, and Cicero grabs your shoulder. "Er... What should we do, Rene?"

"Has Marduk gone mad?" You ask no one in particular. "He's going to get himself and Omar killed with that much overzealousness!"

"Lady Saye has clearly improved since last outing," Cicero agrees. "She wasn't struck with arrows once in the first five minutes of the fight!"

Veiz and Alfred still volunteer to aid them, leaving the Director and her assistant in the center of town.

When you and Cicero catch up with Marduk, he's cackling and occasionally driving his spear into a retreating crowd of some 3 dozen+ vautou. All of his attacks are... Really blatantly telegraphed, and he seems to be having trouble actually doing his job and hitting anyone!

"Ahaha, you like that, birdies?!" Marduk calls out cockily. "My friends and I are under orders to kill anything with wings in this town, so get the fuck out if you don't want to start bleeding! Now..." He twirls his lance around and does several flips, also avoiding the arrows of a few attackers. "Who wants to die first?!"

Omar looks like he barely hung on during that trick, clinging for dear life to Marduk and fumbling with his Mend staff. "P-please don't showboat so much..."

The Vautou he was chasing down earlier all fled in terror at the sight and the boast, only the trio of archers staying on some rooftops.

Voice suddenly sobering, he turns towards Omar, grumbling, barely audible (Omar's eyes widen at one point) until he raises his voice again. "Guess it can't be helped, then!" before flinging over to the trio in question and stabbing them all in one fell swoop. They then fall beneath a set of rooftops, and Omar loses his balance and lands in the streets nearby the fallen feathered foes.

"Who is next?!" Marduk exclaims boastfully, wyvern roaring. "I didn't get to be Belinda's second by being bad at warfare, birdies!"

"Has he... Even noticed us?" Cicero asks, cocking an eyebrow. "His sudden showboating is impacting his work, too..."

You leave Marduk be and hurry to check on Omar, Cicero readying his own staff in case he's injured.

Calling to him, you discover the young man in an alley, clutching his leg in discomfort but overall fine and dandy.

Still, though, Cicero heals him. "Are you alright?!" He asks as he does. "You were thrown at least a full story down..."

"Yes, this sand is quite soft..." He says, twiddling with his own Mend staff.

"And... What of the others who fell down here?" Cicero asks. "There were three, were there not?"

"I..." Omar rubs his head, groaning and shutting his eyes, "I didn't see. I zoned out after I was thrown off of Marduk's mount, and... He wasn't hurt, was he?"

"No, he's fine," you say, "just a bit... I don't know what's gotten into him."

"I mean, you have a point..." You look at the nearby building, specifically a window cracked open, "but you're obviously hiding something."

"...I serve the Empire to save lives," Omar says with an oddly resolute expression, standing up straighter on his recently-heal-staved legs.

"Er... Perhaps this infighting is not for the best at the moment, Rene," Cicero suggests. "Come, Sir Marduk needs our attention."

Omar nods and bolts off, leaving you little choice but to follow in hopes of keeping the little guy similarly safe.

From there, Marduk is already back to his ultra-boastful status, and you entrust Omar with his safety before going about with Cicero, attacking any hostile-seeming Vautou as per your orders.

In a reflection of the battle at Fort Amid, very late in, the last few survivors within the confines of the city approach and challenge the still-stationary Denim.

"I always knew you would turn on us," the apparent leader of the bunch says, "but this is... Disgusting. Innocent men, women, and-"

"Save it, Corduroy," Denim says, standing and then rising into the air, tome open. "We both know how this has to end..."

And like that, the lot of them are ripped apart by wind magic, and Denim hits the ground again.

"Wolfskin!" Cato calls out from atop a statue, defaced by the Vautou and slain-offscreen pirates alike when they held Hawk Oasis, "sniff out any survivors... And rectify that mistake."

"And do what?" Saye, untransformed and only nursing a few moderate wounds, asks.

"Kill them."

"Right..." Saye says. "Will do, Director!"

"Please hold still-" Omar says in the middle of healing her, only to be blown back by her transformation and sniffing around the body-ridden city.

"Denim, you count the deceased," Cato delegates. "Too many escaped today, but we can at least celebrate the raiders who fell."

Omar and Marduk are conversing after the fight has drawn to a close. Leaving Cicero to check up on Veiz and Alfred awhile, you approach them.

"...yeah, it all worked out," Marduk finishes saying before he and Omar overhear your approach. "Hey, Rene. Another successful mission, right?"

You nod. "Yeah, the lot of us makes a pretty solid team! Uh, hey, though, there was something I was wondering about... Can I borrow Omar for a minute?"

"Kid wears his heart on his sleeve," Marduk says, "so anything you can say to him, you can put through me too."

Something about the way Marduk stands between you and Omar as he says that tells you that he's not backing down on this, so you approach them and, quietly, give it to them straight. "You were deliberately sparing Vautou, letting them escape."

"That's quite an accusation... I miss a few times, so what?" Marduk asks.

"And then the bodies of the only three we saw you 'kill' mysteriously vanish after Omar drops down with them... That can't have been coincidental."

Before Marduk can rebut once more, Omar cracks. "We... This was not a fight," he says, tearing up a little. "This was... This was a-a massacre. Boys and girls, elderly birds... And our only orders were 'kill with impunity.'"

"Dammit, kid," Marduk groans. "This is why I tried to take the conversational reins."

"S-sorry..." Omar looks resolute again. "No, no, not sorry! I was there in Holmstead... That has reputation of being a bloodbath, but none of Director Waldrick's men would harm anyone who wasn't able to fight back!"

"What can I say?" Marduk says, shrugging with a somewhat resigned indifference. "Caught me off-guard when Omar pleaded to me."

"I hope you're proud of yourselves," you say in a far from pleased tone.

"Absolutely," Omar says with certainty.

"I mean, I could take it or leave it," Marduk says, "but it did feel pretty alright..."

"Morality has no place on the battlefield," you say. "We were to kill any Vautou in the city, barring the exception of Lord Denim."

"And an awful lot of them left walls of Hawk Oasis," Marduk says. "Damn shame, that... You saw how excited I was to kill some folk."

"D-don't taunt me," you say, growing increasingly disgruntled. "You're lucky I consider you two friends, otherwise Director Cato would have already heard about this."

"...thanks, I guess," Marduk says. "If it's any consolation, several dozen birds still got gutted."

"I take no pleasure in this," you say. "It's what we were ordered to do, so it's not our place to question it. Just know that I will not offer you my secrecy if this happens again."

Mutually realizing that this is like arguing with a brick wall, you and the other duo show yourselves in opposite directions.

And so Rene's villain protagonist status solidifies further. It makes me wonder what her father would suggest in a time like this, but he's more than a little preoccupied in another character's arc (I do believe he would give his blessing for the Cicero thing, though).

Thanks for playing, as always. Update twitter/ask.fm are qmgrandflocto, and I'll be around in-thread to chat for awhile.
