>You are one of three characters: Samson, a spoiled bard, Dyrus, an axe-wielding rebel's son, or Rene, an orphan adopted by a high-ranking Director of an ominous empire, now a prepromoted archer-lancer. POV will rotate between them on a thread-by-thread basis, with an off-chance that someone else might occasionally take a chapter.

Rene is... Filled with conflicted emotions at the moment. One of her own subordinates managed to convince the second-most-powerful person in the Central region, also a friend of hers, to undermine direct orders to kill enemies of the Empire. Their intents were pure, but purity is hardly a virtue worth espousing. Meanwhile, she's also filled with hard-to-contain happiness over recent mutual revelations with her beloved Cicero. Still, romantic thoughts are hardly any excuse to overlook her duties... She is faced with quite a dilemma, in short.

As her father, Waldrick, calls literal boatloads of warriors East, there are naturally less available to fight in Holmstead. Samson, Marion, Fabrice, and the rest all hope dearly that this will be enough for their attempt to wrestle the city-state back from the Gerxel to work. Lady Hera still watches over its people with her elite axe-users, after all. Samson, playing an innocuous tune for the people of Holmstead, even cheekily ending the performance with a dedication to the departing Imperials, internally laments his final days of normalcy.

Dyrus and his merry gang of freedom fighters, meanwhile, has finally begun to cheer up from the death of Gerard now that they've made it to Darton. Biff and Byron, citing themselves as having the most worldly experience bar maybe Darren, volunteer themselves to seek out the Lords of Chance. By rumor, they pretty much own half the town with how much service they've provided it, so the red-green knights suggest they look around areas of the town selling weaponry and the like.

You walk alongside the riding cavaliers, whose saddlebags hold what your grandfather estimated would be more than enough to convince even the most miserly of mercenaries.

Your grandfather, meanwhile, takes on the less financial position of talking the local government into turning their coats.

"Sometimes I feel as though we're putting too much responsibility on our shoulders," Byron says to his friend as the three of you approach an armory.

"I would hardly worry about that, friend," Biff says. "We've a set of skills that aid the resistance in doing what they could have gotten another to do anyway, so why should we not?"

"Gerard and Belle would have come with me for an assignment like this," you muse. "But... Belle's been speaking with the wyvern riders a lot more lately, so I appreciate the company!"

"Nary any issue, Sir Dyrus," Biff assures you. "You can rely on my friend and I!"

"Fortune apparently frequents this store," Byron says, pointing out the aforementioned armory. "Let's not waste time without asking around."

"Thanks for your help, you two, but I'll be able to handle taking charge!"

"We're certain you can," Byron says. "Simply remember that we're here for you."

You nod.

"No further adieu, now!" Biff says. "Let us get to finding a mercenary leader!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ll0qrodU0Mg

The duo dismounts, and the three of you head into the armory.

"What a sight for sore eyes this is!"

A heavily-moustached man behind a counter speaks to a brown-haired boy, small in stature, who says little in return.

"Still a bit shy, huh? Well, I'm guessin' your aunt sent ya? What's she want?" The boy produces a list of items and hands them to the armorer, who calls out to some other heavyset workers around the shop. "Hey, you two, quit lazing and start take a look at this list!" The man hands off the list to one of the aforementioned workers, and the boy sighs, walking away from the counter and looking somewhat tired just from that little social interaction.

"Er, could you talk to shopkeep there?" You ask the festive cavaliers.

"Leave it to us!" Biff says before hurrying forward.

Noting you keeping your eye on the boy, Byron nods. "Do what you do best, then." With that, he walks after Biff, and you start towards the boy.

"Hey!" You say, noting his appearance. His hair is in a sort of... bowl cut, with bangs drooping over his eyes. His hair bounces out of his eyes to reveal wide, blue eyes at the suddenly being approached.

Taking a deep breath, the boy calms himself and says, "I'm busy..."

"Hey, what a coincidence, so are we!" You say, figuring that this is no ordinary errand boy/nephew. "My friends and I are looking for the Lords of Chance?"

"They're... Pretty selective about their clientele," the boy says, looking less than pleased to be in this conversation.

"Well, I'm sure their boss would be interested in speaking to a Sir Dyrus! In league with Lord Darren?"

Again, his blue eyes widen at the names said. "You're... The ones who defeated a captain of the Marlo Group?"

"So word travels as fast as we'd hoped!" You say. "Yeah, but that's not even the full story..."

"..?" The boy makes a curious sound.

"We also took down Captain Marlo himself before coming here! He was an old thunder sage with a seven foot-tall impostor."

"Th-then..." He shakes his head, taking a moment to gather his thoughts, during which you overhear some of Biff and Byron's conversation.

"Soldiers of Fortune would have been a much better name, don't you think?" Biff asks.

"That's... You're actually entirely correct, but you're digressing, Biff," Byron says, turning to face the armorer. "Locating her is our priority. You see..."

"...I'll take you to Fortune," the boy says.

"You're familiar with her, then?" You ask, already knowing the answer. "Who could possibly be so important to have a direct line to her?"

"...me," he bluntly responds.

"I... was asking for an introduction," you say, face faulting slightly.

"And I said that because it was funny."

An awkward silence fills your conversation for a few minutes, and you don't really pay attention to the cavaliers' take on finding Fortune.

"...I'm Felix, her nephew." He says, finally, realizing that the joke didn't hit as humorously as he'd thought it would.

Clearly Felix here isn't used to lengthy conversations with strangers. Still, though...

"Oh, nice! Er, hey, Biff, Byron! This kid says his aunt's the one we're looking for!"

"Ah, what serendipitous timing!" Biff remarks. "We need all the time we can get for what's to come, after all..."

"I take it the young man has agreed to show us in her direction, by your excited tone," Byron says.

"...yes," he shyly says. "We'll... Send someone by to pick up that order later, Tony," he blurts out to the armorer.

"Alright, you take care now!" After that, he whispers something to Biff and Byron (they later tell you that it was "that boy's sensitive. Don't push him too hard.") before letting them go after you two.

Along the way, Felix is very quiet, aside from asking a couple simple questions. "Do you intend to hire us?" and "How soon must we be ready, if we take the job?"

The answers to which were, to paraphrase, "yes," and "as soon as humanly possible."

The boy brings you to an impressive-looking mansion, the outside of which is patrolled by a few mercenary-looking types with swords. Initially, they eye the three of you suspiciously, but they don't even question your presence when they notice that Felix doesn't seem to mind, letting you through the gates of the home.

"She should be home right now," Felix says as Biff and Byron dismount at a nearby stable.

"Are we interrupting your aunt's downtime?" Byron asks. "I'm terribly sorry if so."

"Not that we're saying 'we'll come back later,' of course!" Biff is quick to add. "This is of some importance for the future of Teege!"

Felix nods, producing a key from a satchel he's been carrying around, unlocking and opening the doors. "Let's hurry, then."

"Anything we should know about your aunt before meeting her?" You ask.

"Just... Don't insult her," Felix says. "She'll make you fight her if you do."

You nod, following him in, tailed shortly afterwards by Biff and Byron.

The foyer of the mansion is immaculate and filled with expensive-looking decorations, mostly ornate weaponry, with two flights of stairs on the right and left leading up to the top floor, more unopened doors up there.

Speaking more loudly and clearly than you've ever heard him, Felix says, "I'm home, Aunt Fortune!"

"How'd it go?" a gruff-sounding woman's voice calls from upstairs.

"Great!" He calls back. "There's something important to talk about now, though!"

"Alright, alright, I'll be right there!" The voice calls.

From its general direction, a woman with long, black hair (with notably tacky gold streaks) tied back into a ponytail, clad in a loose purple bathrobe, steps out, eyes shut and scratching behind her neck. Even from this distance and with her tired expression, you notice that she has very sharp facial features. "Alright, now what's so important that-"

Her eyes, a dark brown, open, widen, and then her face faults, and she groans, rubbing her temples, before she hurries into the room from which she came. "Could've mentioned we had company!"

"Sorry, ma'am!" You quickly call out. "I probably should've said something too!"

"Just... Go over to the parlor!" The woman calls out. "Felix, start a pot of tea!"

"Right away..." Felix calls, voice petering out to its usual quietness.

You turn to face Biff and Byron, seeing them stare at the front door with comically stoic expressions, before clearing your throat.

"Right, right," Byron says.

No longer acknowledging what just happened, Biff turns around and exclaims, "I should hope that an excellent brew is among Felix's nephewly repertoire."

A few minutes of sitting around later, the woman reappears, this time with her hair let down to a wide, wavy shoulder length, and clad in a plain leather vest and gold-colored blouse/skirt.

Without skipping a beat, she picks up a teapot and teacup, drinks down a cup, and plops herself down next to her nephew.

"So," she says, leaning over to you, Biff, and Byron, "I take it you're the 'something important?'"

"Yes," you say, "these are knights of Noba, Biff and Byron, and I'm Sir Dyrus. My grandfather and I are representing the interests of my mother, Lady Hauteclere, in..."

You summarize recent events for Fortune and Felix, noting that she seems particularly impressed at your mention of the demise of Marlo.

"We'd figured it'd only be a matter of time before someone hired us out against the Empire," Fortune says, leaning back in her chair and gazing up at a chandelier. "You've got money, right?"

"Of course," Byron says. "We've appropriated plenty of funds from the Marlo pirates, on top of what we'd already brought along."

"We'll be more than able to make your Lords of Chance enough gold to switch all of your business cards with ones reading 'Soldiers of Fortune!'"

"Why in the hell would we-" Fortune blinks. "No, wait, that's actually brilliant..." And she shakes her head, "no, no, Lords of Chance stays our name."

"But will the Lords of Chance stay by our side?" You ask.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozYa8oyGdm8

"...I'm certainly interested. What're you offering?"

Biff and Byron retrieve the bags full of gold from their horses, spend awhile discussing funds with Fortune (very often during this, Felix would whisper something presumably helpful into her ear).

To make a long story short, though, the Lords of Chance are in, and your grandfather confirms that the city's actual soldiers are also interested in open rebellion.

Still, though, Director Waldrick is having fleets of soldiers sent to besiege Darton, meaning you won't be able to move onto the desert region JUST yet! Rumor is that Director Waldrick has recently captured a personal boat that's faster than any other on the continent, but it's doubtful he would challenge an entire compromised city alone...

Your pegasus riding bodyguard occupies quite a bit of your time as you prepare for the inevitable. "Director Waldrick could surprise us at any moment," she insists. "His boat could be a harbinger of siege, should he decide to lead it and open the attack with a smaller force."

"But if he does that," you say, swinging your axe idly, "he'll be all the easier to take down!"

"...you sorely underestimate the strength of a regional director, then. You've only glimpsed Waldrick in battle briefly, but... They are all ferocious."

"Hmm?" You say. "What makes you so sure?"

"I... suppose," she says, before nodding and giving a light bow. "I won't let you down, Sir Dyrus."

"I'd never doubt it!" You say in an assuring tone.

In the distance, the sound of Winona talking to Nia about deserts or something is overheard slightly, and Belle shuts her eyes in annoyance, perhaps more than a little impatient with Winona's pestering as of late, to the point where the sound of her being nearby in a noncombat situation puts her a bit on edge.

"Why has Winona been trying to talk to you so much lately?" You ask. "I've tried talking to her about it, but she never gives me a straight answer, and Nia doesn't seem to know..."

Belle sighs, brushing her purple locks behind her ear. "My parents were high-ranking Gerxel military officials. She thinks we might have known each other before I ran away from home."

"Eheh, small world!" You remark, amusedly, also admittedly interested in this new piece of information. "Did you?"

"...it's not really relevant. I try not to think about my life back then, and being grilled for questions brings up bad memories."

"Well, uh..." You clear your throat. "Sorry for asking."

"...you didn't know," Belle says. "I can't blame you for asking."

"Alright, alright..." You blink. "You're not worried we might need to fight them someday, are you? Your, uh, parents."

"Er, Winona's probably my best friend in the world, if you wanted me to talk this over with her..." You say. "She'd probably take it to heart if I asked her to stop..."

"...that would be appreciated," Belle says, ends of her mouth slightly curled upward.

To make a long story short, you speak to Winona, and she even approaches and humbly apologizes to Belle for her actions, and from there the three of you+Nia talk about assorted mundane things (though Belle, being Belle, is often on the fringes of the conversation).

The next day comes, and with it a swath of ships, the frontmost one also being the smallest and by-far fastest-looking.

Glancing over his light tome to look at the approaching boats, Felix gripes to your grandfather. "There's... more of them than you'd said there ought to be."

"I ain' never 'eard o' the Lords of Chance grimacin' at poor odds," Doran says from nearby, sitting and giving his bow one last examination.

"They must have summoned more men away from Holmstead," your grandfather says. "This is... Troubling, but not insurmountable."

"Right you are, both of ya!" Fortune says, pointing her devil sword forward. "This Devil Sword has never once turned its powers against me, so there's no way in hell I'm cowering here!"

"But..." Via smiles lightly, producing a Mend staff and shutting her eyes before whispering, "just in case~"

From there, the lot of you quietly awaits the ship once belonging to a myrmidon smuggler you met only in passing, barring the exception of Biff and Byron, who look forlorn at the ship.

From it pour out some dozen heavily-armored knights, and from the boats far from you soar plenty of pegasus knights, which Winona, Nia, and the former's subordinate wyvern knights, as well as a few pegasus knights among Darton's soldiers and the Lords of Chance, hurry out to meet.

Taking his sweet time is that old man you saw facing that Raleigh man awhile ago, the Director. He walks with a cane, and takes several moments to eye the formerly-Gerxel wyvern riders. "So," he grumbles, "that's what's become of them..."

"Director Waldrick," your grandfather says, being the first to approach his little armored battalion, Steel Axe raised.

"Lord Darren," Waldrick says in response, readying his Silver Greatlance in one hand and clenching his cane in his other fist. "I had expected better of you."

"This Empire is one of senseless death and expansion," the old man you admire says to the old man you're not crazy about. "A man so reasonable as yourself should see that."

"Since your group of traitors has already attacked my pegasus knights," Waldrick says, "I do not assume you're interested in surrendering quietly. So be it, then."

Straining somewhat and bouncing his left leg, he discards his cane and stretches.

"Only one thing to do when the Empire pushes forward," you shout, rallying your allies, "and that's push BACK!" before rushing forward alongside your grandfather, Belle, and Fortune. Slightly behind you, Doran and Felix scurry after with their ranged magic.

Fortune, foolhardily confident in her luck and the armors' slowness, is the first to reach the regular armor knights, waggling the devil sword and clicking her tongue when one tries to take a swing at her and misses. "You don't know why I named myself 'Fortune,' do you?" She asks the poor sap before cutting through his armor. It's thick enough not to kill him in one blow, but a bright light envelops the man moments later and finishes the job, the source turning out to be the light magic of Felix.

"I-I got one..!" He says, excitedly, before backing out of the action in time for your grandfather to critically wound another.

Biff and Byron find themselves preoccupied elsewhere on the pier fighting the newly-arriving ships' troops alongside several other soldiers.

You quite easily cleave through a lance-armor, your axe being designed for such things.

Belle dodges and swerves over and out of the way of several attacks from quite a few armored enemies, aided only by Doran, close enough to attempt to riddle them with arrows. Between Belle's silver sword and Doran's ordinary ol' arrows, Waldrick's entourage is, slowly, being whittled down.

Waldrick, however, has certainly taken notice to Belle's powerful weapon, and has begun his slow approach with that deadly greatlance of his own.

Figuring that having some seven or eight knights liable to just turn around and distract you at a vital moment against their Director just wouldn't fly, you decide to just up and attack them, Royal Axe continuing to do its exact job, Fortune's Devil Sword and Felix's Light Magic quick to join you in your efforts.

A Silver Greatlance rains on your parade, however, when a concerned grandfather barely manages to deflect the blow with his axe, recoiling severely from the action.

"Ngrh-!"

"...not as resilient as you once were, Darren?" Waldrick asks.

"...powerful enough to block you from harming my grandson," he says, struggling back to his feet, looking winded.

Several pegasus knights hurry towards the scene, breaking through the fliers sent to block them, distracting Doran and Fortune from Waldrick as they take to fending them off. Via, meanwhile, watches over the outnumbered duo, attention for healing on the ones more statistically likely to get stuck by a million pikes.

"This is one city, under siege by the director of this very region," Waldrick says. "No matter how long this fight drags on, you will not hold out. The rebellion's death begins here."

Your grandfather clutches his steel axe. "That... Would be where you're wrong, but I'm in no mood for philosophical debates."

"Nor am I."

No backing out of it now... Your group is going to need to defeat Director Waldrick before his soldiers can overwhelm you. That certainly won't be the END of the battle, but it'll be the start of its end.

"Grandpa!" You say, trying to stand at his side. "You can't hope to lay a dent in this guy! The only thing that'll happen is you being hurt, or worse!"

"...your grandson makes a valid point, Darren. Lay down your arms now and you might be spared execution."

"That's not what I said at all!" You say, leaping forward. "I'm just saying that you should be picking on people in their prime!"

"Leaving my grandson to fight my battles..." Darren shakes his head and begrudgingly goes to aid in repelling the pegasi. "Don't think for a second I'll be COMPLETELY useless!"

Meanwhile, you pull away from Waldrick, noting that he looks... Hurt by your attack, but nowhere near as horribly as his lesser knights. Either his armor is much thicker or he's much hardier than them.

Belle flies right into Waldrick's range before he can attack you, distracting him long enough to pull both of you out safely. He takes the chance to chug down a healing concoction, looking hearty as he was before.

"Er, he's... undoubtedly got a ton of those stashed away in that thick shell of his..." Felix says thoughtfully, quietly, from behind you and Belle. "Unless we can exploit a weakness in his defenses, even beyond his low magical resistances, he will heal himself up again and again until we're fatigued..."

>A. Then you'll need to attack until he runs out!

I really don't want Waldrick to die before Rene can inform him of her newfound relationship, but I can't not vote for what I think is the correct option for saving as many allies as possible, which is targeting his gimp leg. Hopefully one of his subordinates will demand he retreat if the battle starts to turn against him and they'll keep us from finishing him with a sea of bodies or something.

Supporting.
>>
>>46827715
This >>46827877 seems fine, but we could probably get a magic user over to weaken him further or distract him before we deal the crippling blow.

Felix uses Light Magic. Funnily enough, I think he's Dyrus' only offensive-magic party member.

"Wait a minute..." Also speaking quietly, you whisper to Belle and Felix, "back in Noba, people talked about how a bard burned up his leg badly, how it didn't heal right... Let's hit his leg really hard!"

"A very... mundane end for such a fearsomely defensive foe," Belle notes, albeit nodding at the suggestion.

As Waldrick hurries forward, Felix takes the initiative, popping open his Light tome and aiming his strike right at his bad leg.

"G-grh-!" Waldrick recoils, falling to one knee, and you and Belle attack that same spot in unison, your axe swinging through moments before her sword.

Waldrick cries out in pain, dropping his Silver Greatlance to support himself with both of his hands, sputtering in shock.

A pegasus knight calls out, "D-Director Waldrick!"

"Don't be distracted... That will get you killed," Waldrick says, heavy of breath.

"Y-yes, sir..." The Pegasus Knight declares, immediately resuming trying to not get cut in half by Fortune.

"I know you're in pain," you say, "but that's... Overselling it a little, don't you-" You notice that your attacks managed to quite literally sever his damaged leg, somewhat above the knee. It's a miracle he's staying CONSCIOUS through that, let alone lucid.

"Y-you..." Waldrick grits his teeth. "You're... Hauteclere's, are you..?"

>A. What's it to him?
>B. Yeah
>C. You're not talking to him
>D. Go and help repel the rest of the enemy.

>B. Yeah
Time for dying (?) boss plot conversation, a staple of Fire Emblem.

"Yes," you say, "and what business is that of yours?"

"Y-you... Support her without question... Over this... Cause of r-righteousness..."

"Of course!" You say, proudly. "This Empire is... It's hurt a lot of people, including my father!"

"Yes, Dyrus..." You're confused for a moment, but remember. Oh, right. You're named after your father. "I... R-remember him..."

"What are you talking about?" You say, wondering if he's finally losing his sobriety to blood loss and pain.

"Haute... clere... A heartless woman who would forsake her child to evade society's judgement..."

"How dare you?!" You bellow. "Mother treats Laurise and I very well!"

"She hasn't even told you..."

"Told me what?!" You shout, raising your axe instinctively.

"Rene... Veiz..." No longer able to keep up a conversation, Waldrick mutters, before slipping away, "be strong, my daughters..."

The siege lasts for days even after that first wave, but ultimately the Gerxel are forced to retreat to the Archipelago, and the coastline begins to support the resistance from there. You have little time to ponder your final conversation with Waldrick in the ensuing days, having a desert to get to.

And so our heroes' first major victory over the Empire is won, but it couldn't have been over a nicer guy.

Thanks for playing, as always. Update twitter and ask.fm are qmgrandflocto, I'll be around in-thread for awhile.

Holy shit, Gerxel is gonna go to hell over this rebellion and the only person who can but the pieces back together is Rene

Thanks for running.

Little sad Waldrick didn't get an epic boss fight.

And therein lies the story arcs!

Dyrus gets to be a straightforward protagonist, Rene's idyllic Empire life becomes increasingly hard to keep together, and Samson just keeps getting sucked into things.

>>46828475
Earlygame general bosses, eh? They're never build to last.

For what it's worth, he only managed to not kill anybody because of playing smart, even if the solution was admittedly pretty easy.
>>
>>46828535
I get the feeling Dyrus's end boss is going to be Empress Rene
>>
>>46828555
We'll have to see how the arcs play out, I suppose. There are still quite a few tricks up my sleeve plotwise that I've yet to play, after all. Some foreshadowed more or less than others as of yet.
