Recently: You and Robin began your double battle against Robert, the fire master of the Elite Four.

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear vote winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just three 1d100s. Sometimes you can get a modifier from circumstances, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever! This is not a video game.

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

The crowd cheers at the slight break in the fighting. It’s not on purpose, it’s just that both your side and Robert’s have taken a few seconds of breather time to assess the situation.

Stealth Rock is in play on his side of the field. Both of his Pokemon are confused, but could snap out of it any second now. Vlad took a hard, nasty hit from Thunderbolt, and won’t survive a light attack, but he also has two uses of Double Team up, so hitting him will be a gamble.

You and Robin have been doing well so far, generally outwitting Robert with every move. But his overwhelming power is undeniable and any slip-up on your part could easily swing things back in his favor.

"They're staring each other down!"

“That’s right, Chip. It seems both sides are taking measure and planning their next move carefully.”

You look to Robin. She’s sweating. So are you, actually. “He’ll keep the heat up to wear on our Pokemon’s stamina and lower our concentration. The longer the match goes, the hotter it’ll get.” She takes a gulp of a water bottle and then hands it to you.

You take off your overshirt, leaving just a tank top. That’ll buy time, but this heat from his constant fire attacks will start wearing on your concentration before long.

At the same time, Robert’s Pokemon also tend to frontload on attacks and go all-out and are likely to be more vulnerable to damage as the match goes on as well. That’s the cost of his incredible offensive power.

Vlad can move twice in the speed it takes a normal Pokemon to move once. His moves aren’t quite as powerful, though.

Robin’s Dragonite takes the center front position, showing that she’ll likely go with a physical move.

“Roost!”

Vlad lands on a soft spot to rest for a moment. You can see an improvement in his health almost immediately. It continues to climb.

Robert’s Pokemon begin rushing.

“Darmanitan! Rollout! Magmortar, Thunderbolt!”

“Dragonite, Roo-no, Sky Drop on Magmortar!!”

Rollout rolls into Dragonite. It’s not a fancy hit, but it still hurts. Dragonite keeps flying at his target, though.

Magmortar manages to land another Thunderbolt on Vlad, zapping away the health he just regained. Still, if you hadn’t used Roost twice, he’d definitely be out. That thing can hit hard.

It’s smirk from managing to hit Vlad a second time vanishes as it’s swept up by Dragonite into the sky.

“Good job, Dragonite!”

Robin looks back to you apologetically. She was hoping to get Magmortar before it could hit Vlad. But for the next few precious seconds, it’ll be Vlad against Darmanitan. Vlad has the type advantage with that matchup.

“Roost!”

Vlad lands on the ground again, regaining precious health.

“Fool!” Robert bellows. “Darmanitan, use Smack Down!” He points to Dragonite.

Darmanitan starts rushing forward.

“Vlad! Brave Bird!”

Vlad blows through the air at insane speed, sending out a shockwave. He strikes Darmanitan as it tries to leap into the air, making it’s jump turn into an ungraceful flop as it’s knocked out in mid-leap. It lands on it’s face.

Dragonite drops Magmortar to the ground, causing a respectable amount of damage. Magmortar is no longer confused, but he doesn’t have much left in him.

“Amazing, simply amazing. Crobat’s not just a fast status layer, but an impressively strong and precise attacker.”

“An unexpected revelation, Chip. There’s no shortage of surprises coming from Kat and Robin in this tournament.”

Try as you might, you can’t help get a little smug grin as you wipe the sweat from your forehead. Vlad zooms back and high-fives your open palm as you do so, earning a small warning from the referee about trainer contact. Not a big deal unless you get a few more.

Vlad looks like he’s down to about half-health after that attack thanks to the recoil, or maybe a little less. That’s better than you expected, though.

Robert glares. He throws out his next replacement Pokemon, Torkoal. It’s struck by Stealth Rock on entry.

Dragonite glides back into position, ready to keep things going with Vlad.

You notice that both Pokemon are flapping wings just a tiny bit slower. The heat is brutal, even if he hasn't used a fire move just now, there’s still a decent but dissipating warmth coming from the area’s on the field his moves have struck.

“Vlad! Confuse Ray and Bite!” You point at Torkoal.

“Rapid Spin!” Robert yells out, exactly like you’d expect.

Vlad launches a Confuse Ray like a torpedo as he latches on, biting Torkoal on the neck.

Torkoal flinches. Even if it didn’t, you suspect it’d be too confused to do anything. It flails weakly, unable to really tell what’s going on.

“RAAHH!” He smashes the small podium on his side of the arena, clearly damaging it. He’s given a warning card. When he glares at the referee, the ref flinches. “Magmortar! Finish that damned pest once and for all!”

Magmortar takes aim and fires another Thunderbolt. But this time, it hits one of the double-team versions of Vlad instead, missing the real one.

Dragonite comes in with a spin and slams Magmortar with an Aqua Tail. It’s another respectable strike, and enough to knock it out.

“Pokemon after Pokemon on Robert’s side is going down! What a battle!”

“That’s right, Chip. One can’t help but-”

Robert glares at the announcer box.

“...but assume it’s all going according to Robert’s plan.”

He looks even angrier at that statement. He turns his attention back to the fight. “Magmortar. Return!” He quickly retrieves the knocked-out Pokemon and sends in Heatran again. “No more games! This circus ends-”

Stealth Rock smashes into Heatran, cutting him off. You swear you can see a vein popping from all the way where you are.

Just in case. If Robert gets a lucky hit and finishes Vlad off, that could allow him to get his temper back in order. Losing his chance at taking Vlad out is just going to make him more and more angry. Vlad's done some serious work. He deserves a rest.

“Torkoal! You will do as you’ve been trained and Rapid Spin! And Heatran, use Nova Cleanse!”

Heatran looks back at Robert, unsure.

Robert stomps his foot, making a small crack in his platform. “I don’t care about that! Use it!”

You don’t know what that Nova Cleanse move is, but if it’s a move that even Robert would hesitate to use before, it doesn’t sound good.

“Vlad! Confuse Ray and Bite on Heatran!”

“Dragonite! Sky Drop!”

What you witness unfold is a beautiful example of art in motion.

Vlad lands a Confuse Ray in Heatran’s eye and enraging it. It looks just like Robert.

Vlad and Dragonine fly at their opponents. The uneven heat in the air causes them to rise and fall, but they ride it gracefully, confusing Heatran and Torkoal even further.

Despite the confusion, the metal oval part on Heatran’s head begins to open up, but Vlad clamps down on it with Bite. From it’s body language, it’s easy to tell that that’s where it’s next attack is going to originate from.

Heatran’s attack is stuck going off inside it’s own body. Vlad holds his Bite down tight, refusing to let it get out. Heatran glows red, and the ground below it begins to smolder and melt.

“It doesn't matter!” Robert yells. A tinge of desperation in his booming voice. “Nova Cleanse doesn't need to be aimed! Ha. Ahahaha!”

Vlad keeps holding it, stopping that unholy plasma from escaping. It’s fangs remain embedded in the solid steel of Heatran’s head. Poison slobber falls from his open mouth and onto Heatran, instantly vaporizing. But Vlad holds on.

Robin’s Dragonite picks up Torkoal and takes off.

Vlad struggles and fights, holding Nova Cleanse back. Heatran begins sinking into the ground, deeper and deeper as everything below it melts. Whatever that move is, it’s easily the strongest you've ever seen.

And Vlad continues not to yield. Heatran glares up at the pest on it’s head and redoubles its efforts. You feel the heat from here. You see steam shooting from it and the dirt take on a shimmer from the sandy parts melting.

And Vlad holds it anyway.

Heatran’s eyes roll up, and it passes out in it’s own ground-melted pit of formerly solid ground. Vlad holds it until he’s sure the struggle is over, then he relents and flies off, adjusting it’s sore jaw muscles.

You look to Dragonite. It gently placed down Torkoal in an out-of-bounds area. Robin’s success didn't lie in doing incredible damage, but managing to lift and leave Torkoal out of the fight without Dragonite getting hurt in the process. A referee waves a flag about Torkoal being out of bounds, and it’s unable to run back to the battle area in time.

Robert isn't enraged, or smashing things, or trying to melt anyone with his gaze. He looks like his entire world just fell apart. You didn't beat his strongest Pokemon using its strongest move with a trick. You beat it in a direct contest of strength and willpower.

He falls to his knees, defeated.

The cheering is overpowering. The announcers are jumping. The hype in the arena right now is incredible. But Robert is staring off at nothing. He retrieves both Pokemon without looking.

Time passes. The audience is still going nuts, but the referees are beginning to press Robert to take out his next Pokemon, or at least respond to them in some way.

He weakly begins to raise his hand to motion to the referee.

He’s surrendering!

You open your mouth to say something. Anything. But words fail you. You look to Robin and she’s the same.

“T-the only time he’s ever looked like that is when mom left.”

A slight pang of guilt hits you. But it’s very, very slight.

“What’s this? It looks like Robert is throwing in the towel.”

“I...yes. We’re getting confirmation, Chip. Robert has forfeited. The challengers win.”

Once again the crowd goes insane. Not just cheering, but conjecture and surprise. The jumbotron starts showing researched stats on surrenders in the tournament and Robert’s battle history, as well as speculation on that move.

Vlad lands in your arms, and you hold him tightly. Robin hugs her Dragonite when it lands, too.

Your friends rush down and you feel pats on the back, but it all fades into the background as Robert approaches.

He’s pale and still looking at nothing in particular. He mutters something about a good match and offers you a badge he doesn’t have. It’s likely a recited speech from his gym leader days.

"Have dinner with us."

Inviting him to our hotel suite might be a little weird, but Robert absolutely needs some sort of supervision here. Not saying this will definitely go in a dark direction otherwise, but he's definitely striking me as suicidal - or at least incredibly depressed - based on how he's acting; he's feeling hopeless, obviously for a lot of reasons. This loss is the straw that broke that camel's back, and we want to make sure this doesn't end in him offing himself.

Robert was already becoming angry, I bet the plan in the beginning was for something like this, the double 100's probably just sped it along a bit.
>>
“Robin, get the challenger and yourself a badge...” he says distantly, unaware of how wrong that is.

“Great match,” You shake his hand. It’s limp, but he doesn't resist.

You look to Robin for guidance, or to say words of her own. Your glance snaps her out of her shock.

“I-I-I...whenever I was sad, Torkoal always did his best to cheer me up. You should talk to him. He’s a good listener.”

He holds Torkoal’s Pokeball questioningly, then looks at Robin for the first time in a long time.

Vance nudges you. You look over to see Violet approaching. You curse under your breath.

Vance is on the same wavelength. He and Jeanine go to run interference and keep her away. “Go.”

You pat Robert on the back. The first time your hand hit’s it, you almost fear it’ll be burnt. Even in his defeated state, he has a distinct intensity. “Why don’t we go get dinner?” You rush him out, with Robin and Clair in tow.

You head out the back, and to your surprise, Emma and Cliff are there. They guide you out, evading press and fans.

“What are you guys doing here?” Clair asks.

“We figured we’d have to hold Robert back from strangling Kat if she and Robin won,” Emma says. But the jovality of her voice leaves as she looks concerned and his unfocused pupils.

They take you to a private restaurant with a private booth. When 3 of the Elite Four want something like that in this town, they don’t have to try too hard.

You all sit down to order. They cater to Pokemon too, so after getting them all treated, you order them all everything they want and try not to think about the bill.

Emma and Cliff, who both look like they’ve been waiting for Robert to be defeated to gloat about it, now seem to regret their wish. It’s a bit awkward.

Clair takes this opportunity to sample off of everyone's plates and doesn't really care.

“So what was that move Heatran was using back there?”

Emma and Cliff both perk up to listen.

“...working on that for ages,” he mutters. “A radius of heat around the Pokemon, sizzling any water and damaging anything that gets close.”

He isn’t really clear, but after some talking you get the jist of it. Heatran would generate a large sphere of heat that by Robert’s account, would be too hot to get near. A protective bubble as well as an unstoppable attack. You’re glad Vlad stopped it before it started. It sounds like a nightmare to deal with.

“So where did you find Heatran, anyway?”

“Mreh? Ah. Yes. Heatran. It was Professor Hornbeam that gifted it to me. I’ve made several trips deep underground in different caves and mining sites, but there was never anything deep enough. He apparently lured it up, somehow.” You and Robin and Emma exchange glances.

He starts getting his appetite back a little. He grabs Clair's hand when she reaches for his plate. She smiles apologetically and pulls her hand away.

You nudge Robin to say something.

“D-Did I ever introduce you to Clair?”

He grunts as he eats. “Psychic gym leader. I’ve met her before.” Clair looks indignant that he speaks as if she’s not there.

“Yeah...” Robin looks intently at her glass. The sound of your Pokemon crunching down their food seems incredibly loud. “I meant, as one of my girlfriends.”

“Is that what we’re calling it?” Clair turns to her, genuine curiosity in her tone.

You chime in. “I was thinking it was like-”

“You did not.” Robert states. His booming voice is returning.

You all listen to the sound of Pokemon eating some more.

“I-I-I don’t think you should trust him,” she mutters. “Hornbeam.”

He grunts at her to continue. You feel like normally he’d dismiss her outright. He just rips some food apart with his hands.

Robin fills him in on your encounters with Hornbeam. He listens intently to every word, only interrupting to ask for clarification on details here and there. You never really thought about how he didn't know this stuff. You forgot he once said he was friends with Hornbeam.

“I see.”

“You see?” Clair sputters incredulously. “That’s it?”

“This is different from the version he told me.” His voice is calm and deep.

“Different? That’s really all you have to say? You’re not even going to-”

He crushes a glass in his hand. “I will not be questioned by you!” He gets up.

“Where are you going?”

“I'm going to burn him alive!” His threat booms in your chest.

Emma and Cliff get up to try to put him back in his seat.

Much as I'd like to see Robert do exactly that, Hornbeam is probably one of only two villains in pokemon who actually carries a gun.

The other being Giovanni, more than likely.

>Convince Robert to just stay and watch the tournament for now

Hell no! If he goes off half-cocked like this he's just going to get himself killed or mind-fucked.

>hornbeam would hurt you to get to Robin in a second. Overwhelming power is great, but have a plan before you use it. Also might want to have Heatran checked out by a third party. Hornbeam could have done something to it.

So, new thread?

“Down!” Emma tries to pull him down to his seat. He’s built like a beartic, though, and she just hangs off his arm like a grocery bag.

“Wait,” you tell him. “Stay for the rest of the tournament, and we can go after him together.”

He looks down at you. His gaze no longer has that dismissive glint, but he’s skeptical. “Wait?”

“Yes. Wait. Do you know where he is right now?”

“I will find out. I just need a Team Imperium grunt to talk.”

“How are you going to do that without a psychic?” Clair asks. “They won’t just give you that information.”

He glowers down at the stacked, smarmy gym leader he just learned is doing the nasty with his daughter with exactly the expression you’d expect. “You would be shocked how motivating people find the smell of their own burning flesh.”

Shocked silence fills the booth. Even your Pokemon slow down their eating. Except for Levi, she just finishes her plate and eats the leftover extra food that Vlad had.

“Be that as it may,” you guide him back to his seat. “It’s still not a good idea to go alone.”

“Geno’s been breaking up Team Imperium operations wherever we’ve been able to find them,” Emma informs him.

Cliff puts down his drink. “I told you guys not to get involved with that stuff. But nobody listened to me.”

“Shut up,” Emma and Robert say in unison.

“We’ll do it together,” you tell him again.

“We’ll do it together,” Robin repeats, getting his attention. “Trust me.”

Robert sits, not really able to argue strategy or boldness to the two trainers that just beat him. “Very well.”

“Alright then.” You nod to his Pokeball. “In the meantime, you might want to get Heatran checked out. I know a reliable professor that I’m sure would love to do that.”

He grunts in agreement.

So this is what it’s like to deal with in-laws, huh?

[That’s it for tonight. We’ll be picking it up tomorrow, as well as training for Geno.]

Reiterating: Vlad needs Baton Pass so we can really make Destiny untouchable.

Imagine her dodge with six double-teams on top?

Nice pun. That said him finding another woman while good, he and Emma probably won't mix.

You know, I'd kind of like to know Emma's thoughts through that whole battle.

[Thanks for coming, everyone! I really appreciate you guys. Lewbin is almost done.

As always, please don't hesitate with any criticisms, questions, or advice. If I have any annoying habits or anything feels stale, let me know or I'll just keep doing it! You won't hurt my feelings.]

Considering how much the girls drink already, she might actually be a moderating influence.

Or at least pass on experience for how to deal with shit while sloshed.
>>
>>46872934
Doesn't Emma have a thing with Geno?

>>46873055
Robin and Clair sweetbin when?
>>
>>46873055
Any chance of that battle from Emma, Cliff or Violet's perspectives?

Or a cliffnotes general impressions thing?

I got the feeling if Violet got a word in there, Robert would've been found dead the next morning, one way or another.
>>
>>46873055

Only criticism I can make is just take notes on the battlefield, and have a pokedex open so you know the mon's stuff.

Also this >>46873127

Gonna need that Robin + Clair after this next one.

>>46873055

And it's not your fault, Darmanitan really looks like it should be fire/fighting type.

Reading this was a bit like watching one of Tear of Grace's videos.

Mostly because Robert was raging about as hard as Tear usually does.

>>46873411
Man that smarmy fuck's voice is nice though.

It is easy listening, isn't it?

I've learned a couple of new words off him in the last few months... ;P

>>46873669

I suppose the same could be said about us Aussies, but I live hear, so it's not quite as common an occurence.
>>
>>46873055
I feel like a 12 on 12 battle was way too ambitious, both for Robert for suggesting it, and for you for trying to write it.
>>
>>46875078
Like in-quest has such a thing been attempted before? Because otherwise no wonder Robert ran out of steam.
