You walked all day, found some treasure buried under a lake, dug it out from the sand and dragged it out to safety. It's been taxing but satisfying. You finally reached the lake house when the sun was already down and found out it belonged to the marquise, who gave you an exploration charter and a mission.

Well, she just wanted you to bring a sealed scroll to a certain Stanley in Maner. Easy, right?

The problem is that she wanted you to leave right now. “The night is young” she said with a smile, as if expecting you to go there right now.

After a five minute walk, you leave the sandy and somewhat rocky beach the house was built close to and enter the grassy fields again. The grating of insect limbs against each other produce the normally somewhat soothing sound crickets make, or cicadas, or maybe some other strange and exotic bug that's active at night since what you hear sounds nothing like either of the former options.

And then Bryld just says it out loud.

“Why do we have to go right now? What's wrong with her?”, she openly complains, looking as tired as you expect her to be after the day you had. She's having trouble putting one foot ahead of the other by now, and even if you're much more used to physical labour than she is you have to admit that you would really, really love to just hit the sack right now.

“I understand it might be urgent, but it's night! People shouldn't travel at night! And does she really have no servants? I can't believe she doesn't!”, she continues.

You gained two scrolls by interacting with her: one is your exploration charter, which officially makes you a Shadow Marches explorer, possibly the first of your kind, and you need to take good care of it; the other is a sealed message for this Stanley.

>”If it's urgent, we have to deliver it now”.
>”It can't be this urgent, let's camp out for the night”.

I'm still at uni, so I can't do a whole lot of reading.

"It can't be this urgent, let's camp out for the night", you decide, although you have to walk at least ten more minutes and find some place that might not be immediately visible from the lake house so you don't give away how you're neglecting her instructions so boldly and blatantly.

Your legs are so tired and sore that even just setting up camp is hard and you just feel like sleeping in the grass, although that's not really recommended considering the amount of bugs around. Not that setting up camp will help much but it will be bearable at the very least.

You just eat whatever you feel like eating without cooking anything. Fortunately the salted meat can be eaten like jerky and still be tastier. There's some pepper added in, too, which makes it more flavourful.

Bryld too just wants to doze off, but nonetheless finds the strength to complain, "I've only heard about people of higher station being unreasonable, I didn't know it was this real".

"Or this bad", Tahenohan adds. She doesn't look as tired as either of you two are and seems in her usual good mood despite everything, "I haven't dealt with nobility much, personally, but this is pretty much average".

"Good to know it's their modus operandi. I want to have even less to do with them than I did before", Bryld grumps still, "And I thought the duke was bad for being such a cheapskate with our compensation".

"Let's hope she'll at least pay us", you voice. It would be stupid of her not to, after all, unlike the duke of Reboldeux she doesn't want to chase you off but rather to keep working for her, or so you assume.

Then again, considering she barely had a house, no servants and lives away from the last bastion of civilization on these lands...

>”What do you think is written on the message?”.
>”Can we trust her?”.
>”Didn't she have way too many pets anyways?”.
>”What are we going to buy with the money we're getting?”.

You really did want to discuss something else about that marquise with a long name, but being tired doesn't help in having a decent conversation, and having Tahenohan tackle you to sleep on your lap while Bryld was trying to snooze on your shoulder makes it even more difficult to focus, not to mention you don't know where to put your tail any more, you don't want it to get crushed if they push you down, it's annoying.

Fortunately, you manage to save that leathery elongation of your spine from unnecessary pressure and are instead left with your body being contended by two different people, one of which is content with being on top and the other who compensates by claiming an arm for herself and sticking as close to you as possible. You can't fail to notice that she's holding it between her breasts, as if to separate them when sleeping.

That brings you back, you used to do that too with one of your old partners, you guess it's relatively common of girls with large breasts to do that, though you never really had the chance to ask a relevant amount of people about it.

"Didn't she have too many pets anyways?", you ask the starlit night with your drowsy voice, but drift to sleep before you can wait if anyone has anything to say about it.

If you needed any proof in telling just how tired you were, you barely remember having dreams at all when you try and open your eyes, finding how, as usual, the sun is being way too pushy in the morning.

Fortunately there's some shade saving you, offered by your two companions. Bryld, who has a really concerned look on her face and presses your shoulder as soon as you make eye contact with her.

"Don't move", she says with an almost breathless voice. You can also see Tahenohan on top of you, poised like a cat with her eyes on prey and ready to jump, not quite looking at you in the eye but a little above that. Fortunately she's so light it's not a nuisance in the slightest.

You freeze. Clearly something is going on and it's of course happening to you, after all who has been the target of the majority of fortunately minor accidents until now?

It's hard to not be concerned by looking at Bryld's face, it's like death itself is hovering above your head, ready to reap your soul at any moment and bring it to Nao, while Tahenohan seems to have just found another plaything. Other than you, of course.

Between one and the other it's hard to tell whom you should trust the most in terms of whether to worry or not.

At a certain point Tahenohan extends her hand over you, and the back of it practically scrapes against your nose. It's not even really annoying if not for the fact you're trying your best to stay as still as possible; you can hear Bryld gasp and barely see her nearly panick-stricken expression, which doesn't make anything better. Tahenohan's movements are incredibly fluid despite being so slow, which is in stark contrast to the sudden burst you were expecting from her poise.

"Aha, there you go, good boy. Hehehe", she pulls the hand back and sits on your belly; you barely perceive such movement, but you have enough leeway to at least pull yourself up on your elbows.

It's a scorpion. Shiny black carapace, large body, small pincers and an equally small tail. You've seen that kind already, there were some in your homelands too, it's not even an exotic species. Had it stung you you'd have a bulge on your forehead that would make anyone worry and it would have burned like hell, but it's not lethal. You've seen people get stung by this sort before, they were okay, it was almost hilarious in fact.

"Hehe, it's so chubby", Tahenohan comments, possibly used to scorpions whose length is measured in metres. Bryld still seems nearly terrified.

>”It's okay Bryld, it's harmless”.
>”Isn't it a bit small for these parts?”.

>Thoroughly check your clothes and backpacks.

I finally figured out how to paste on my phone!
>>
"Isn't it a bit small for these parts?", you wonder as you are immediately caught by the feeling that scorpions might have invaded all of your clothes and backpacks or, worse, built nests inside them. You immediately scramble to make sure it isn't happening, while being careful not to put your hands where you can't see in case something might want to sting you.

"I don't know", Tahenohan flatly answers, "They're a bit small for my parts but mine are a bit far away". She's right, of course.

"S-small?", Bryld goes, pulling back and watching you like she doesn't want to believe you actually might have scorpions in your packs, "This is small?".

"Yeah, it's pretty tiny", Tahenohan confirms.

"It's harmless", you off-handedly comment, "We had them where I grew up too, I thought they'd be bigger around these parts". Although if you think about it, your homeland and the Shadow Marches aren't really that far from each other, at least compared to Tahenohan's homeland, and some of the flora and fauna is, if not the same, at least vaguely familiar to you. Of course there's just as many parts that are alien and strange, but all considered it's something you can deal with.

A thorough search of your backpacks and clothes reveals that your belongings were invaded by a cricket and there was a small, bright emerald green frog in Bryld's stuff. It jumped off and disappeared in the tall grass after you lightly touched its butt. Works all the time.

Nothing to be afraid of, it seems.

Tahenohan releases the chubby scorpion in the wild, still amused at its chubby proportions which are apparently very strange to her, and the three of you are ready to set off once again.

Maner is practically in sight, and you can already see the wooden palisade surrounding it.

>”Are you afraid of scorpions, Bryld?”.

Your goal is so close you don't even have the time to bother about minor details any more: you want to reach some civilization even though you've been away for so little. Not that you have no reason to: you have a message to give and a more taxing and dangerous journey to prepare.

The closer you get, the better you see that the wooden palisade is strong and menacing but it doesn't seem to cover the camp completely, only about half: the one facing Northwards, as there is, or was, a constant influx of people and goods from the South that likely kept the camp expanding, making permanent fortifications a tad more difficult than it looked. You also suspect that they may be facing a shortage of stone, just like the one New Royo faced.

Plenty of people hang around the outside, scouting and patrolling in small groups. From their blue and gold uniforms and armours alone you can tell that they are soldiers from the royal army, a wholly different level of equipment and discipline compared to the volunteers that you were used to seeing. Of course you doubt their rank and file is anywhere near the combat prowess of Agnes, but they look the part, which is more than what you could say about her youngsters.

One of such patrols intercepts you shortly before you reach the front wooden gates. Three soldiers, their pace at ease, order you to stop, looking more curious at your sight than anything else. Their leader, a mature man with short light brown hair and a well-shaved squared face examines the three of you with his bright blue eyes; none of them are wearing helmets, you suspect it's because of the heat, you're surprised they manage to keep their well-polished metal armour on at all.

"Welcome to Maner, strangers", he offers, "May I know where you hail from and what your purpose is?".

The soldier gives you a strange look. He certainly wasn't expecting to hear what you just said. Before a long line of awkward questions begins, you pull out the sealed scroll and show it to him; he takes it for a moment to examine the seal and concludes that it matches your claims.

"That is her sigil", he confirms, giving you a smile, "That sure explains your... Unique makeup, you look like a lot that is worthy of her company. Except for you, what are you doing with them?".

Bryld chuckles nervously, shrinking her shoulders a bit, lacking the wits to crack jokes back at strangers. Still, as everything is in good humour, nothing of relevance is lost.

"Follow me, I will lead you to him", he says, and the three escort you inside the camp.

From where you approach, you see that Maner is a well-organized military camp, full of blue tents with gold-coloured linings, all placed at regular intervals and following a specific pattern, based on, you suppose, rank and affiliation to specific platoons and cohorts. Most of the soldiers are either busy maintaining their gear, as this weather requires plenty of that, or washing their sweat-drenched clothes, or just relaxing as there is not much to do you imagine.

Many of them, men and women, give you more than just a glance because of your striking features, especially the horns, the tail and the odd complexion, but all in all your trip to the colonel's tent is quick and painless.

And there you learn he isn't really there but somewhere out in the camp, and by the looks of it this seems to be relatively normal.

All around you, the camp is thriving with life but not too noisy, although farther South you hear plenty more commotion. And a lot of shouting. From one specific voice it would seem.

Though nobody seems to mind it.

"I was told to reach a certain Cassilda, just in case?", you try, trusting the marquise's instructions.

Such diligence is rewarded by an odd look at first, but then the man smiles again, "Ah well, it seems like you know how things work here already. Very well", he chuckles and points in a direction not far away, "Just pass these two lines of tents, there's another block where behind the front rank of tents you can find a small yard. You'll find her there, especially at this hour".

He then pats you on the back, "We're going back to our patrol, good luck on your endeavours, messenger".

Looks like you're on your own. You give Bryld a look, and she just shrugs.

At least it's working, proof that the marquise is not an elf. Not that you needed any proof, her ears were perfectly normal and you could understand what she was saying. Just not what her pets were saying.

You follow the directions given, move past a standard whose meaning you are blissfully unaware of, and then reach this space behind a circle of tents where the grass is relatively tall, very green, and a single table adorns the otherwise empty space, along with just one chair.

On such chair sits a single woman, short and thin but with a head full of long, blonde hair that, along with sharp canine ears and three, separate, equally blonde and very fluffy tails make up for the missing volume. A quick estimate reveals that the body to tail ratio is about 4:3.

She is kicking back, as relaxed as she can possibly be, bare feet on the table, next to a teapot and a cup full of steaming, peach-scented tea, her hands holding the back of her head as she leans dangerously backwards. She even looks like she's sleeping.

Her uniform is blue and green rather than blue and gold, but it's otherwise quite in line with the military context around her; an elegant sword rests in a well-decorated scabbard at her hip.

You slowly approach the mysterious, fluffy-tailed lady.

It's absolutely not the first time you see someone with a fluffy tail, though you have to admit that hers are a little exotic. Her whole look is a little exotic. The blonde is brighter than what you usually see on anyone, and both her ears and tails all have a cute white tip that gives the hair an overall brighter, shinier look. You can also very easily tell that her tails are well taken care of, properly brushed and everything as they look smooth and soft.

A part of you questions why she has three of them, you never met anyone with three tails. Or two for that matter. Regardless, you have a tail yourself so this makes any potential tail-touching totally not awkward, which is what you already know Bryld would never accept as an explanation, but the question is not whether she will let you go through but if she will stop you.

You pause for a moment to consider tickling her bare feet instead, wondering if their texture would be as fresh, possibly from touching the morning dew earlier on. Unfortunately for you and that part of your taste, she keeps moving and flipping her tails about ever so subtly and irregularly as she rests. Or sleeps, it's hard to tell.

Hoping for the latter, you begin to circle around and can already anticipate the slightly electric, silky feel those fluffy tails will without doubt give to your palm.

And even before Bryld can come and yank you away from that close yet so far dream, the bearer of fluffy tails suddenly opens her deep blue eyes at you with a smug smirk, "Do you need something? Or are you trying to grasp something just out of your reach?".

She doesn't make a move and just stares at you as if challenging you to take action. Un(?)fortunately, Bryld actually does yank you back by the arm, forcing a smile.

"We have a letter for Stanley, from the marquise", she explains, holding you tighter than necessary.

Yes. You have a mission to do, a very serious mission that the noble ruling these lands, and you by extension, gave you. She gave it to you, specifically, out of trust. A trust that might cost you your head if betrayed.

Not that it will happen, you absolutely will fulfill your duty, but there are times in life where you must struggle to get what you want, rather than just what you need, and this is such a moment where what you want is right there, the goal in sight.

You extend your hand, but it's out of reach, just barely. A little more effort will do, but alas, as expected the hand of fate has decided to hamper your valiant efforts and pit Bryld against your desires. There she is, at your side, but instead of being a helpful comrade she has planted her feet on the ground and is pulling back with all her might, clenching your arm to her body, trapping it within her soft yet tense limbs.

The tails, meanwhile, are teasing you, taunting you, circling and milling about innocently, pretending to be unaware of your hand, enticing you to come closer in a blatantly false veil of innocent. Just outside of your predatory focus you can see Tahenohan, squatted to stare closely at the tiny gap between your fingertips and the fluffy fur, waiting to witness the epic right in front of her very pupils.

And then you pull back and straighten yourself, especially because you almost stumbled and fell backwards with Bryld yanking so hard.

"Yes, here, she gave us this scroll", you say, your serious tone and look crashing loudly against her upwards-turned lips and squinted eyes full of smug, and Tahenohan's manic, expecting look.

"You're Cassilda, right?", you ask as you hand over the scroll, which she flicks from your hand with commendable dexterity.

"Mh? You mean you're giving me a sealed scroll without even knowing if I should have it?", the level of smug only increases, audibly crashing the roof and officially going over all charts. She toys with the seal with her lithe fingers, "I wonder what the marquise would say if this was to be broken by the wrong person and it was only your fault...".

This doesn't make sense, it all adds up, you followed the directions correctly and therefore she has to be Cassilda. Of course you know she's just toying with you, and she knows it's working too, just look at the way she's flipping her tails about, they're even bending in your direction, knowingly enticing you to their fluffy hug of perdition, promising a moment of bliss that you will never forget in your mortal life.

You know better than to give in, but the burning feeling welling within you, still lit from your previous near-encounter with the object of your desires, sears all confines of common sense away from your judgment.

"OH YOU SMUG FOXFACE!", you explode as you dive facefirst for the fluffy tail triplet, intent in showing her who's boss. Bryld, who made the mistake of relaxing around you, is too late to stop you and only manages to latch on to you just to be brought down like a loosely strung backpack.

Your face hits the grass, and Bryld hits your back a moment later. You hear Tahenohan go "AAAAAAAW! So close!", like one of those old people who comment sport matches from the sidelines.

With uncanny agility, Cassilda has now sat cross-legged on the table, sipping tea while she reads through the now open scroll with not a problem in the world.

“Well isn't she a resourceful fellow...”, she appreciatively comments as she reads.

You groan in frustration at your failed attempt at showing the fox girl who's boss. You should have expected it, you might have had more chances with your first attempt, even with Bryld's unbridled resistance, but maybe even that is just a mere illusion, a dream that somehow found its way to reality and superimposed itself in front of your eyes for a moment.

And then there's Bryld that, unlike Tahenohan, is not a featherweight and you can very much feel both her impact and her pressure on your back. She too grunts in frustration, albeit for different reasons, and does not even let you get up at first, waiting until she's sure you have calmed down and will not give in to the easy temptations of a tail triplet.

Cassilda, who is really quite small all considered, seeing how she's about at your eye level even though she's sitting crosslegged on a table, finishes reading the scroll that wasn't intended for her and then gives you a strange, curious, wide-eyed look over her cup of tea, as if wondering what might be the problem.

"What does it say?", you ask, feeling like you have the right to know at least this much.

"Oh, scouting reports mostly. Apparently she can send people where we can't send our aerial reconnaissance", she simply explains, "The Northern jungle might just be full of surprises, we'll have to see if we can spare some explorers for that".

"We are explorers", Bryld claims in a sudden and unexpected burst of initiative. So unexpected she surprises herself and nearly winces as she realized what she just put herself into.

"Oh? Why didn't you tell me already?", she rolls the scroll up and leans on her elbows, giving you a sharp-toothed smile, "Explorers, eh? Adventurers?".

"Well... No", she adds, still clinging to you but this time kind of trying to hide.

"I'm Lillith Taieart", you introduce yourself, "This is Bryld Norling, cartographer extraordinaire, and Tahenohan, our wizard and bodyguard".

"Hi!", Tahenohan waves while Bryld gives a small bow as she's introduced.

"We're not really fighters but we are explorers, and I understand you need them. We already got our charter from the marquise", you continue.

"Wizard, eh?", Cassilda has focused on Tahenohan instead, "Another wizard passed by recently and she had the same ether mutation as you".

"Eeeeeeh? Really?", she sounds intrigued.

"Yes, though hers was much worse, likely owing to her great... Power, so to say", she chuckles, "She heard we needed magic users so she came by to help but only had time for one spell, you can see the fruit of her hard work in the middle of the camp. Oh you can't miss it".

You glance in that direction but the sight is quite blocked from where you are, there's tents, standards and whatnot.

"But yes, we do need people to brave the Northern jungles and explore, but... We've been attacked by an army of trolls and kobolds from that direction, and then from the undead", she goes about them like they were ordinary occurrences, "So it's probably not really safe, you might want to start with the lake or the area around the old pirate fort to the West".

Bryld pales at the mention of armies attacking. You can very clearly see how not eager to go there she is. The undead weren't a problem before with Tahenohan, but a whole army of them might be a problem.

Of course she might just want to try and make an army of her own, after all she did bring all those bones with her, fortunately carefully packed so as not to scare anyone, but then again there's material for just three of them. That's not quite an army.

>”Do you have magic users now?”.
>”Were the attacks bad?”.
>”Do you have enough military strength?”.
>”Are we in danger?”.
>”What can you tell me about the marquise?”.
>”What can you tell me about yourself?”.

Please, Lillith can take on an army of bones by herself.

Has Tahe told us of her ether mutation yet? I can't remember.

Eh.... An enormous attraction to demoncock?

Or just the hyperactivity.

What attraction to Cambion dick is uncommon? Seems normal enough to me

"Were the attacks bad?", you ask, not hiding the bit of concern you also feel at such news.

"Yes but we managed", she explains as if it was a given, "We have a few tricks up our sleeve, including a wealth of resources. Though I'd rather if you were adventurers, I sure would welcome a couple more people with swords and that could do crazy things with them; as much as it pains me to admit it, it's never enough in our situation".

"So the situation IS bad", Bryld concludes, but Cassilda just chuckles.

"No it's not", she insists, "It's bad if we might lose, but I don't think we will. Not unless something completely unexpected comes out of nowhere and tramples us with unpredictable power, or the entirety of this continent bands against us, but I don't see either happening".

The latter in particular does sound unlikely, you have to admit.

"What can you tell me about the marquise?", you then ask for a change of pace.

"Mh, nothing that you probably didn't guess already", she smiles, "Though I don't know the specific reasons for everyone's mistrust of her. Seems like her claim to these marches is legitimate, but apparently not even your king was happy with letting her rule here".

You blink, you don't know much about politics yourself, and turn to Bryld, who has an equally confused expression, "What do you mean? If her claim is legitimate what might the problem be?", she wonders.

"I don't know", the foreign foxgirl admits, "Nobody seems to like or trust her. She's probably unnaturally old or something, to the point even the king forgot she existed, but I don't know what that means. I never really understood your politics".

Bryld doesn't look convinced, and squints at Cassilda as she does that smug smile of hers. You can tell the gears are grinding in her city girl brain and she's trying to make some connections. But the conclusion she comes to will have to wait for when the foreigner will be absent, it seems.

And this is it for Episode 59!

Wow. Maner. Finally. You'll be stuck here forever now, ahahahaha!

No seriously though, there might be a few more episodes of just getting around town and meeting people unless you decide you're tired of it and want to depart ASAP. It's not like this quest is on rails or anything after all, there's not quite enough plot for that.

Though today you kind of disappointed me, I must admit

Thank you for participating, and see you next time!

Lesbianism?

Guys, besides the lack of common sense, mania and pointy ears, what else is strange about Tahenohan? Since it's a mutation an NPC who never saw Tahenohan before could notice, it can only be physical, right?

It's the hair
