Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, welcome to yet another session of Eagle Rising.
In this story, we take on the role of Anlec Falconcrest, third son of the noble Falconcrest line of Alterac who leaves home and seeks the life of a knight abroad.
After fighting in the first and second wars, he returns home to find his land in ruins and the name of Alterac a curse upon the lips of men, elves and dwarves.

Can you help Anlec come into his own as a lord?
Can you make the Eagle rise once more?

These are the lands of alterac, fairest of all the kingdoms. Your inheritance is the town of Strahnbrad, located at the center of the royal road that passes through alterac and is the lifeblood that sustains your people. The lands to the north are your domain, and encircled on the map. It includes bountiful farmland and groves that are in good demand for building ships.

A long time has passed since you led your small cavalry force out to help the mages and secure your dominion by destroying the threat of the syndicate and their dark masters of the argus wake

The fortress of Eagle's Perch now belongs to the rightful king of Alterac, Isiden Perenolde, who is known to be just, wise and calm ruler under whose stewardship the land is flowering again.

You hold your court in the spartan but imposing fortress of Falcon's Rest, much like your father, and longfathers before you.

The land had been at peace for nearly half a generation when a new threat to the kingdoms has emerged. The orcs seem to be gathering once more and have broken out of their internment camps and even now ravage the countryside. You ride forth to war, after burying your subordinate, Benedict who you ennobled with the wardenship of the Alterac Valley internment camp.

You have destroyed the orcish menace that threatens alterac and southern Lordaeron. However, the victory seems to be hollow. The orcs you defeated are few in number and none of them are from the interment camps. Rather, the orcs were always fugitives who ran away after the second war.

Right now, you are going to Dalaran with your bodyguard, and a new member of your retinue, Lieutenant Elize Thorn. She is gilnean and has been ordered by the king and queen to accompany you and aid you in any way whatsoever. A young woman, she seems fascinated by stories of war and the conduct of knights. This is at odds with her role and training as an intelligence officer and bodyguard.
>>
You wake up the following morning as a draft of cold air wakes you up. The attendants have not come yet. You can still idle around in bed for a while contemplating everything that has happened to you since Benedict's funeral. Or you can get up and dress yourself. Dalaran is still far away.

>lie in bed, wait for the attendant to wake you up.

You sigh to yourself and push yourself up from the bed. You know that you will be lying in bed for hours, trying to fall asleep but failing to do so. You might as well make the most of your time and start to get dressed.

You begin buttoning your shirt and comb your hair. You wear your Trousers and spend some time tying your riding boots. Your fingers feel sluggish this morning. Probably something you ate last night. As you are done being dresssed, you look at your reflection in the mirror.
A tired man with flecks of grey in his black hair stares back at you. He holds himself well with a military air, but is tired. Like a block of iron, you are strong but brittle. You know how to handle matters of war, but woe befalls you if something outwardly bad happens to you, you are doomed.

It has always been your biggest failing

You look at your lady's 'favor'. Lieutenant Thorn doesn't strike you much like a lady. You are somewhat sure she might have drugged you last night. But then, there are few knights in the world now, and fewer ladies who grant them their favors.
You tie her underpants, noticing that she was wearing black lace. You like the texture of it, and spend a few moments imagining her wearing it.
You tie it around your arm again, hoping wistfully that she were here to tie it for you.

A knock on the door takes your attention away from the impromptu favor.

You bring out your pistol and point it at the door. Purely a reactionary measure. While you were happy that your visitor last night was the perky Lieutenant Thorn, it paid to be prepared.

"Who is it? Identify yourself!"

"It is Franklin, my lord. The men are saddled up and await your command."

The weather grew much warmer as you kept moving down the mountain. Soon enough, the cloak you were wearing seems useless. As you pass below the daggers that make up the lower foothills, you see the banners of Stromgarde in the distance.

Strom's Bulwark has grown in the fifteen years since the end of the second war. It is now an impressive fortification that straddles the line between Hillsbrad and alterac.

While not exactly the said phrase it. I do agree with the intent. Especially because up until the "timeskip" there was a large amount of flirting back and forth between the parties.
>>
The is no need to be sneaky about it. Both your nations are part of the Alliance, even though it is now increasingly a paper gryphon now.

Yet it allows Stromgarde to build up a threatening fortress to harry Alterac. Frustratingly, you have never found a solution for the fortress. It is too well defended to take it by storm, ,and besieging it requires you to to deploy too much manpower on your flanks. The siege of Strom's Bulwark will be a costly siege and battle, and if Alterac loses there, it loses the war. Yet no fortress is perfect.

Franklin hails the sentries and they allow you to pass into the fort. You notice that the personal banners of Stromgarde fly over the fortress, A red eagle swooping down. It would seem that Prince Galen has made it into his garrison.

"My lord, is this a good idea?"

"No it isn't Franklin. Which is exactly why I am doing it."

The three of you are waiting in the hall. The steward has promised that you are too meet the prince soon enough. He is a busy man for the most part. Although he is courteous. Quite unlike his father.

The prince lets you into his study while your officers are offered refreshments.

The man is quite unlike his father. A thin reedy man with hair that is thinning. He looks much more like a scholar than a warrior. You wonder if he even has the wherewithal to manage a siege. He certainly doesn't look like an inspiring warrior.

Of course, looks can be deceiving.

"Prince Trollbane, on behalf of my men, I thank you for your warm welcome and your hospitality"

The prince smiles at you, and you swear you can see shadows below his eyes. You know the man is younger than you, but his thinning hair and eyes make him look like he is of an age with a bearded archmage.

"Thank you, lord Falconcrest. We are soldiers here, but we are always happy to share our meat and bread with our fellow men. I trust the walls of Strom's Bulwark will let your men sleep soundly at night."

"Indeed they will, Prince Trollbane. It is impressive, to see such elaborate works built in so short a time. I must thank your father that he didn't build this before the days of the Alliance. We would all be swearing fealty to you then."

The both of you laugh.

"Is something wrong with the fortress, prince Galen? Are your supply lines stretched too thin?"

Any kind of weakness in Stromgarde is good for Alterac.

The prince smiles grimly at you.

"Tell me, Lord Falconcrest. What do you think of this Fortress's location. If we were to fight in a war, how many men would it take to besiege this fortress?"

"Far more than I can afford."

"Yes, it is a beauty isn't it. A straightforward siege would be a long drawn out affair and allow Stromgarde to keep the meager power of Alterac in check. I will hold here, and my glorious father will ride to my rescue and kill all of you, thus winning a great victory and fulfilling his dream of making Alterac a part of his realm."

"Of course, I would kill him first." You say. There is something interesting about the conversation that piques your interest. You want the man to continue.

"Maintaining a fortress like this takes a lot of resources, lord Falconcrest. I had suggested to my father that we abandon it but he refused to listen. Now it stands here, a bulwark made of glass, guarding against enemies that go about pillaging at will.

I heard that the Alterac Valley internment camp was sacked and your wardens murdered. You know that you are not the only lord who have been forced to keep the orcs penned down."

"I rode with the lightbringer and the crown prince of Lordaeron and destroyed the orcs."

"Some bloodthirsty raiders? Hardly the orcs I mean. Look around you Lord Falconrest. There has been no mail coming from southshore this past week. The Lordaeronian fleet that Terenas was building is understrength. The orcs are on the move. They have taken ships and sailed away."

>>
"Go on, Prince galen."

The man takes a swig from his before continuing. He offers it to you. "Brandy?"

You shake your head and he takes another swig.

"I was afraid of something like this happening. I warned my father to deploy the Stromgarde brigade to deal with the orcs before they got too organized. He responded by ordering them to garrison Strom's bulwark.

My Father is old, Lord Falconcrest. He was not young when he started the invasion of Alterac, and the years haven't been kind on him. If uncle Thoras were here, the orcs would have been gutted.

The best of Stromgarde sits even now in this fortress, sharpening their swords and preparing to march into Alterac and putting Isiden and you head on Alteraci pikes, while the orcs run rampant, ransacking camp after camp.

My father has made sure that the kingdoms are now free of orcs, and has given them the space to organize into a military force capable of fighting us. Just imagine. The naval commander of Lordaeron lies dead in southshore, and the orcs have sailed away on Alliance ships."

"Does Kul Tiras know of this? Surely they can deal with the orcs now that they are on the seas."

"Sink ships that fly the banner of Lordaeron? Would you do such a thing Lord Falconcrest? Terenas has hidden this embarrassment. My father wants nothing to do with this. Even now, they are building new ships and levying taxes for them. Lordaeron is on the verge of rioting, and my father wishes me to stay put in this fort to carry on his work."

"Because I am a prisoner in this fortress. My father has slipped into old age and thinks me, his only son to be a threat to his land. The Stromgarde brigade are my jailers. You must help me."

"How?"

The man looks at you.

"My father will not live forever, Lord Falconcrest. Once he dies, Stromgarde will have no interest in these lands. My realm is split too far apart. Aid me in this, and Strom's Bulwark and the lands that surround it will be yours."

The man looks at you with a wild look in his eyes.

"Not a war, I just want a diversion, lord Falconcrest. Please. I just want to go home, and rule my lands in peace before my father drives my kingdom into the ground."

"Very well then Prince Galen. I will give you this...diversion. When you are king, the eagle of Alterac shall fly over Strom's Bulwark, not the eagle of Stromgarde."

Franklin and Elize are having a conversation when you leave the room. The two of them stand up, and Elize gives you a salute.

Franklin follows you like a gnomish contraption, while you see Elize grab another apple before following the two of you.

"You have something for us milord?"

You find an alcove and beckon Lieutenant Thorn to follow you. She slips in behind you and locks the door. The two of you are comfortably close, and you stare at he crimson of her lips and her brown eyes stare into yours.

"My lord, this is most inappropriate."

Her voice breaks the enchantment. You must focus on what you want her to do, not what you want to do to her.

"Listen to me very carefully, my dear. I am in need of your services."

"Go on, Lord Falconcrest." She doesn't attempt to touch you, Good.

You tell her everything Galen told you a couple of hours ago. She listens and only interrupts if there is something she needs clarified. When you are finished, she looks at you for a moment and frowns.

"I understand my lord. I will do what I can."

As you are about to leave, she brushes against you and gives you a gentle kiss. "Farewell, my brave knight." And then she leaves.

As night falls, you lead the remaining men of your company. The gates of Dalaran are in the distance, and a company of soldiers, both men and elves challenge you.

You show them your banners and request a meeting with Archmage Antonidas on orders from King Isiden Perenolde.

As befits your status, you are offered a place to stay in the violet citadel. Your men however must find a place in the city's inns.

"Thank you, but I would rather prefer to stay with my men. We have ridden too far and I will not go away from them. Not while our job should take an afternoon at most."

The elf graciously agrees, and your men agree to meet at a tavern in the afternoon. If all goes according to plan you shall find them there. Its not just a matter of brotherhood. You do not want to be assassinated. While the spells of mages are potent, none can match the alertness of comrades in arms.

As the day darkens, you stare at the sky. You have never been inside the city before, yet you do not feel like exploring. The city is wondrous and magical, yet it feels sterile compared to the natural beauty of Alterac or the sylvan groves of Quel'thalas. Again, the sadness grips you. You have no children to explore these vistas to again, no wife to embrace under the wonders of the world.

At this moment, you hear a knock on your door. Expecting one of your men or some emissary or attendant, you open it. Standing before you is an elf with whitish blond hair and blue eyes.

"Rathaella. This is a surprise. Please come in."

"If you would prefer, I would like to talk you you in the parlor. Please."

You follow her, your head swelling with a bunch of conflicting emotions. You still remember her. In the sad empty room that was your romantic life, she was a spot of brightness. You still treasured the ride through alterac valley and the battle as one of the happiest memories of your life. You were young then, Alterac was rising, with your sword arm and smarts you would be the greatest lord that ever lived and rule alongside a beautiful lady and doting children.

It had passed you by and now you were a graying old man tormented by ghosts of the future you never had.

The two of you sit down at a table for two, and Rathaella orders a two drinks. It is a cool wine that tastes like summer berries. As she drinks the wine you see her long ears twitch just a little. She looks like she has not aged a day since you last met.

You tell her about the walls, or the new gnomish town that is being built into the mountains, and she seems genuinely curious.

They have these machines that turn water into this hot grit that keeps you awake for hours. Mayor Ryson is quite addicted to it. I personally don't like the taste, but it does wonders. I would suggest that the gnomes turn it into thistle tea and earn enough coin to make me rich. Rich enough to rebuild stormwind."

Your laughter is a bit forced but you really want to talk to her.

Although, you want to spend more time with her, you are here for work. Maybe when your job is done, you can go ahead and spend some time with her. You know nothing about the city, and would love to spend some time with Rathaella, just observing her and catching up.

By this time, your meals are finished and Rathaella is about to take her leave. You escort her out, and she takes your hand. You let her take the lead and follow her. She leads you to a park and conjures up some cold water. You are old now, and are grateful for the drink. Sitting beside her in a perfectly immaculate garden and watching the birds fly is comforting.

As the day draws to the close, you say your farewell to her, and she leaves you to head back to her rooms. You go to bed after roaming around in the city until an arcane construct directs you to your inn.

You awake the next morning, feeling refreshed and begin to get dressed.

Still a fighter, still brotherhood of the horse
>>
You could wear the robes that the occasion demanded of you. You were a lord of Alterac, and ruler of Falcon's Rest and Strahnbrad. It would be proper and fitting. Something your father would have done.

But you were not your father. You were the third son who was sent away from his home because your father didn't need anymore. You were the last of your kind, a brother of the Brotherhood of the horse. Although the years were making you more feeble, you were still a warrior and more importantly a leader of men. How many nobles in these times could ride with their bodyguard at ease, knowing that they had shed blood with them before.

You admire your reflection in the mirror. You need not wear a helmet or a cloak but you do so. The helmet is shaped like that of a falcon at rest, and the cloak is colored with the insignia of the brotherhood.

The march into the violet citadel has a lot of people staring at you. You see, men elves and even a few gnomes turning around to look at you as you walk up the stairs to the citadel.

They might be mighty mages, but you are a living relic. And Relics deserve respect. For their age if nothing else.

A man beckons you. "Lord Falconcrest I presume?"

"That would be correct. The archmage will see you soon. Please be seated."

The man leaves and walks back to a door before stepping inside.
>>
An elf woman enters the room after a few minutes.

"Lord Falconcrest, Archmage Antonidas will see you now."

You are led into the office of the famous archmage, The ruler of Dalaran, and perhaps the mightiest human mage in existence sitting right in front of you. He bids you to take a seat and gives you a scroll that is quite long.

You know what you are here for. All you have to do is sign it.

>>
"Archmage Antonidas, if I may, I would like to thank you for co operating with us for the operation of the Alterac Internment camp for as long as you did and..."

You notice that somewhere down the line the Archmage is looking at some other scroll and seems to be deaf to the outside world. He hasn't listened to a damn thing you said.

It was probably your fault for talking in the first place. Mages were notoriously aloof, always dreaming about the future or thinking about some arcane conundrum or magic. They were barely human, and interacting with them always made you come off as feeling a little dumb.

In the presence of the Archmage, that feeling was magnified tenfold. Instead you turn your eye upon the contract and read it. Nothing spectacular just something some bureaucrat dreamed of and dressed in fancy words. A polite way to terminate the entire matter and blame it upon unforeseen consequences.

You sign the paper and push to leave when the archmage's eyes snap back into yours.

"Thank you Lord Falconcrest. Welcome to Dalaran. I trust you had a pleasant stay so far. Now that it is out of the way, let us get down to some real business."
>>
Even as you watch, Two women come up from behind him, as if materializing from thin air. One of them is Rathaella, and you think you have seen the other mage before.
She is a young girl and incredibly beautiful. There is something vaguely familiar about her features that you know. Something about the color of her eyes and the arch of her nose...

"Lord Falconcrest. Allow me to introduce to you my assistants. I believe that you know Archmage Rathaella, you might have interacted with her before. And my apprentice - "

"-Jaina Proudmoore. You have your father's eyes and nose." You finish, looking at the young woman. She stares back at you, curiosity in those bright blue eyes.

"Very perceptive Lord Falconcrest. Now dalaran is in need of your assistance once again. Please be assured that we will do our best to repay you for your assistance."

"Lord Antonidas, forgive me. I have learned, never to rush headlong into a battle without knowing what I am up against."

Lord Antonidas smiles at you and looks like someone's toothless grandfather. You wonder how someone so powerful could look so harmless.

"Of course, lord falconcrest.

You see, harvest season is fast approaching in a few weeks, it is a time for joyous celebration throughout the kingdoms and perfect time for someone to spread misery.

Have people in your domain been falling sick and wasting away?"

"Maybe, my domains are rather big, and I don't know about the health of every person on it."

"Ah, good, good. You see lord falconcrest. There seems to be a minor outbreak of a plague in Lordaeron, and I wouldn't want your people to suffer as well. Think of it as fair warning. I simply have a request for you.

I want you to escort Lady Proudmoore to the borders of Lordaeron, without too much fanfare and pomp, and kindly take Rathaella into your service while the Kirin tor investigates this plague."

"Of course, Lord Antonidas. It will be my pleasure. Although I must ask, why I would need the services of Arcanist Rathaella."

"I am concerned for Alterac as well, lord Falconcrest. It would be sad if your lands were to become victim to the plague. Lady Proudmoore is to investigate the plague along with an old friend of hers, and I believe you have done something similar with Archmage Rathaella before. Its simply easier for people to work together better if they have worked together before.

She will aid you in protecting your land from the plague, and once it's threat passes, she will return. I thank you for accepting my suggestion of aid so readily Lord Falconcrest. Many lords would stubbornly refuse."

"Oh, absolutely, how could I refuse. I have the best interests of my people at heart, and Dalaran clearly does as well. I thank you for warning me about this brewing plague."

"Now that our meeting is done, you may do what you wish, lord falconcrest. Lady Proudmoore and Archmage Rathaella will be glad to help you. You haven't seen much of the city have you?"

"No, I have never been to dalaran before, Lord Antonidas, and I am quite lost at the magnificence of the city. I am a simple dweller in the mountain. I am afraid I would be quite lost in the city."

"Lady Proudmoore and Lady Rathaella will be happy to help you, if they are not busy with their own affairs." Lord antonidas nods at you in a grandfatherly way, and you take your cue. Your meeting is over, and you now are free to spend time in this city for a couple of days.

You leave the room and are intent on heading back to the inn when you feel a soft voice calling you.

Lady Proudmoore and Rathaella have followed you.

"Lord Falconcrest, you wanted to explore Dalaran?" Lady Proudmoore asks.

"Indeed I did my lady."

"Allow me then." She turns around and walks away, and you follow behind her. Rathaella is now close behind you and she slowly puts her arm in yours. To any observer, the three of you are strolling through the beautiful city and the young human mage is telling you about it.

"Forgive me my lady, I don't know much about the history of Dalaran. It would be nice if you would tell me about the history of this illustrious city."

"Of course lord Falconcrest. Please take a seat."

A trio of seats fly through the air and land behind you. You sit down, and let the lady continue.

"You see, Dalaran was one of the city that became independent around the same time the Strom empire collapsed. It fell into a period of lawlessness, which was complicated by a number of hedge wizards making their way here.

While the citizens of Dalaran were initially afraid of them, the continued influx of wizards made the city better in the long run because no one would challenge a kingdom of mages. The high elves were interested in this as well, and decided to guide the fledgling human mages with proper training and guidance. Under the magisters of Quel'thalas, Dalaran flourished and in time became the city that it is now."

Concise and telling nothing that you didn't know about. Either Jaina Proudmoore was airheaded or she was only pretending to be one. Any way, you had to play her game to get in her good graces.

You ask her a few more questions, and bit by bit, aided by Rathaella, she pieces together the history of the different parts of the city, and you feel extremely weary. Magic was not your strong suit, and you tired of remembering the names of mages and their magical inventions. The parade of Elf, human and gnome names never seemed to stop.

At some point you yawn, and this elicits a response from both Jaina and Rathaella.

"My lord, are you perhaps tired?" Rathaella asks.

"It is getting rather late, and we have a long ride in front of us."
>>
They are right. Lady proudmoore bids you farewell and leaves. Rathaella escorts your inn and you walk with her under the magically lit lamps of the city. After fifteen years, you look upon her face again, and it seems unchanged.

Deep blue eyes stare at you, half closed and she smiles that sad smile that sets your heart beating rapidly.

She exuded a grace and charm that was more than human, and you realize that you had fallen for it when you were five and twenty, and you were falling for it now.

"Here we are, Anlec. Your quarters. It was good to see you again. I am happy that the years haven't been too hard on you. I still see the man who put his cloak around me when I cried on the banks of the frozen lake."

She gives you a hug and you curse yourself for wearing your armor.

"Would you like a drink Rathaella?"

"Yes, if you are buying."

You laugh and she takes your arm. The two of you walk inside the inn, and make for the barkeep. Rathaella orders the same drink again. She seems to have a fondness for it. You must agree that the taste is good, even though your time in the cold winter land has given you a taste for harder spirits.

The two of you drink and talk about nothing in particular, about how the sky looks different in Quel'thalas and how the sea in Stormwind harbor is different from southshore. You answer her questions about your life haphazardly, spending more time looking at her face. In the years that you have last seen her, her beauty has grown. Her lips seem fuller. Her eyes sparkle with mischief and yet are largely placid as lagoons. She asks you about your own life and you tell her that you never found someone.

"I came close once. But alas, it was not to be."

"Tell me about her. She must have been quite the charmer."

"Well I met her briefly during work. I was a young man then and would right the wrongs that were heaped upon me, and charm her with my winning smile. We fought together, and she saved my life. I told her a sad tale and she cried over my shoulder. When I woke up the next morning, she had gone. Yet she had taken something from me."

Rathaella leans close to you. You can smell the wine upon her breath, and it smells pleasant.

"What did she take from you?"

"Only my heart."

"What if she were to return it to you?"

"Would she?"

"Would you take it from her and yet let her keep it?"

"I would."

"And what would you ask her in return for taking your heart and holding it for all these years"

"Her heart."

"Then it is yours."

She leans in and kisses you tenderly on the lips. You kiss her back and feel her fingers running softly on yours. Your fingertips intertwine and the two of you hold each other's hands and explore each other's mouths for a time before she slowly pulls back.
>>
She mockingly smiles at you, a coy expression that makes her look like a child kissing a person she fancies for the first time.

"I really hope you are not too old, Lord Anlec. It would be a shame."

She leads you to behind her, and takes you up to the room you have been living in. She opens the door and kisses you passionately. You respond in kind and parry and thrust at her tongue with yours. After all these years it's finally happening.

Your armor comes off swiftly enough and Rathaella helps you with your breastplate. You turn around to thank her and see that her robes are on the floor. She is as naked as a baby, and watching her perfect body hugging yours is too good to be true.

"Bite me."

"What?"

"I want to make sure I am not dreaming."

She obliges you by biting you tenderly on your neck. The feeling is real. All too real.

You push her on to bed and she follows in behind you.

After what seems like hours of lovemaking, the two of you fall asleep in each other's arms. As sleep overtakes you, you stare at Rathaella's beautiful naked body cuddling you.

You could say all the things in the world to her and it still wouldn't be enough. All the languages and all the words in the world wouldn't be able to describe what you felt now. The slow burning in your heart had been ignited and it burned like a flame in a fireplace, comfortably warming your soul and body.

Rathaella shifts a little, her body spreading warmth against yours and mutters something in her sleep. You put your left arm around her and hold her tighter. She squirms for a moment, her movement so close to yours sending a tremor of excitement through you. There is no need to say any thing. You listen to her breathing softly against you, and smell the perfume that she is wearing. Peacebloom. How odd, and yet how fitting that the scent of peacebloom from her body finally puts your mind at rest. You stroke her face and pull her ears gently, and she unconsciously twitches. She opens an eye for a moment and smiles at you before falling asleep.

You hold her close and follow her into the sweet land of dreams.

I hate belfs with a passion. Stupid traitors can't even stay in the alliance for more than 6 months. Literally every single war they dropped out of the Alliance; Garithos was right not to trust them with anything even vaguely important, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate a fine figure in sweet armour.
