So... news! Yes, I already know about the whole /qst/ thing, but as long as it's still in trial mode, until (or if) the mods say otherwise, and to keep the archives consistent, I'm going to continue running things here in /tg/! Anyways, let's get to the questing!

You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

It had already been several days since the... incident where you met a literal Abyssal clone of yourself, no thanks to Vahlen. Even though the event itself was largely kept quiet from the rest of the base, there were lots of things going on behind the scenes. Apparently, the idea of one of Vahlen's experiments breaking out of its own accord got a LOT of her backers nervous, so a multitude of investigations and reevaluations were going on behind the scenes. In consideration of you and your friends, the Admiral had arranged the transfer of you, your task force, and few other shipgirls to Norfolk, Virginia, the headquarters of the USN's Atlantic forces. It was only temporary, of course, until the whole drama blew over and stabilized.

In addition, the Admiral had forbidden you from telling anybody else about your clone, Woel, outside of your task force and a few of your closest friends like Anna, all of whom basically already knew by the time the order came out.

Actually, it was thanks to Anna that you were even able to stay in contact with Woel. She had set up an encrypted phone that was largely untraceable with which you could chat with Woel for short periods of time. Of course, this was something that you didn't want to abuse too much. But otherwise, you were glad to know Woel made it to the Queen Mary safely, and was steadily recovering. However, being just like you, she was pretty frustrated and restless at having to lay low for possibly the rest of her life. That was something you'd have to worry about later, too.

Anyways, Norfolk. The rest of your task force didn't seem to mind the place, and Portland was absolutely LOVING it. You, on the other hand...

Ehhhh, honestly, you'd rather be back at Pearl, where you've been this whole time. Plus, having been fighting on the Pacific in both your old and new lives, it kinda felt like home to you. Here though, in comparison, Norfolk was gloomy and cold. A bit depressing, honestly. Then again, at least you weren't here on your own. Your task force, Anna, and the Fletchers had also been sent along. Not only to get them away from the drama of the investigations, but also to help make up for the shortage of USN shipgirls on the East Coast, thanks to many being diverted away to help the Midway offensive. A lot of them were pretty heavily damaged, too, so they wouldn't be coming back anytime soon.

Hell, even Haida was still with you, Apparently the Canadians were so proud at having "assisted" in the retaking of Midway, they requested to have Haida indefinitely attached to your task force. Ontario seemed to be all for it, apparently as a way to get Haida to go out more. However, the cruiser herself had to return to Canada, since the rest of their destroyer weren't going to look after themselves.

You still had a bit more time before getting your next briefing from the Captain, so you wondered what you should do.

You decide to go check up on how your foreign counterpart was doing. You remember she got hit pretty bad during Midway and had been sidelined for the last few days. You head over to the bay, where you could see Haida standing on the edge of the water, her Rig fully manifested as she stared out at the horizon.

"Feeling homesick?" You grin as you walk up beside her.

"Huh?" Haida nearly leaps into the air when you speak up. Guess she didn't have her search radar turned on. "Oh, it's just you, Hoel. And, well, it's not exactly that."

"Still haven't gotten over getting hit like that?" You quickly start to home in on the problem.

Haida's silence seems to be all the answer you need.

"Hey now, you shouldn't beat yourself up like that, Haida." You try to reassure her. "It's not like you're the only ship to have gotten hit in that battle."

"You don't understand." Haida bites her lip. "The other destroyers, they look up to me, you know? What kind of example am I going to set, if they know I got knocked out at Midway before I could really do anything of use?"

"You tell Ontario of this?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Why should I? She already knows everything." Haida rolls her eyes. "That's why I need to get back to working order."

Oh. You could see where this was going. Her Rig out, and the look of slight pain on her face.

"Did you tell anybody you were going to test run today?" You ask suspiciously.

"Um, yes?" Haida lies horribly as her eyes immediately break contact from you.

"Uh huh." You shake your head.

"Well, you should at the very least have a buddy." You grin as you summon your own Rig in response. How about a couple laps around the bay? I think we've still got time before we have to report in."

"That's what I was planning." Haida nods and jumps down into the water, her feet landing solidly on the water's surface.

You leap down right next to her, and start heating up your boilers.

"I'll race ya." A glint of competitive spirit flashes in Haida's eyes as she nods toward the open bay ahead.

That was a sub-plot in a Kancolle doujin actually. Destroyer's Destiny, was it?

The scientists accumulated a pile of bodybags along the way to convert potential compatible hosts into shipgirls.

Also if I recall, this was the endgame plot point of a previous, short Kancolle quest. The Coronado shipgirls were pretty much soulless zombies vulnerable to subversion off the bat.

Thankfully for you, Tribal-class destroyers like Haida couldn't really go much faster than Fletchers like you. Thanks to your little headstart, you're able to maintain a consistent lead in front of Haida the whole way around Norfolk's bay.

You DID have a bit of a close call when you rounded Cape Henry at high speed and nearly slammed into the side of a Coast Guard Cutter. You barely manage to make a hard starboard turn, your cheek almost trading paint with the side of the ship. Haida, being farther back, is able to compensate much better, and managed to close the distance just a tad. On the deck of the cutter, you could see the sailors on board wave and whistle as the both of you pass.

Both of you finally complete your circle around the bay, bobbing and weaving through the military and civilian traffic. Unlike in the Pacific, the north Atlantic was largely secure with the cooperation of both the United States and the various navies of the EU. So naturally, maritime traffic here was much heavier than you were used to seeing.

"You... you..." Haida pants as the both of you return to the Norfolk docks.

"Yep, I know I'm the winner." You grin smugly.

"You cheated!" Haida pouts, her amber eyes blazing.

"Well, you never did say we had to start at the same time!" You snicker.

"Jeez." Haida somehow manages to pout harder.

"Anyways," You stretch as you dismiss your Rig. "We better get going if we want to make the briefing. Don't wanna set a bad example by being let, eh?"

"Of course!" Haida nods as she dismisses her own Rig and takes position on your flank.

"So, Haida," You eyes begin to wander down to her torso, "how have those injuries been? They're not still bothering you, are they?"

"Oh, well, no really." Haida shakes her head and lifts her shirt up just enough so you could get a look at her midsection. You could see a few discolored patches where bruises remained, but otherwise nothing looked too bad. "The ribs are more or less healed up already, and the pain is manageable enough that I don't have to take medications for it anymore. Really it's just the bruises that are bothering me, but I haven't had time to get those fully fixed yet."

"Is that so?" You ask as you unconsciously prod at one of the purplish bruises with your finger.

"W-w-w-w-w-w-what are you doing!??!" Haida immediately puts distance between herself and you, her face crimson like her hair.

"Sorry! Couldn't resist!" You chuckle. "Pretty firm, too! I'm surprised!"

"Well, I DO exercise every day!" Haida huffs. "I learned the hard way that too many Tim Horton's really adds a lot of unnecessary ballast..."

Before you could get the chance to ask her what a Tim Horton's even was, you enter the briefing room and the heavy atmosphere immediately kills the conversation as the Captain and the rest of the task force turn to watch the two of you enter.

"Ummmm, did I miss something?" You blink.

"Why are they staring at us like that?!" Haida whispers, equally unnerved.

"Just in time." The Captain sighs. "It seems that we have an emergency situation."

"W-what?!" You blink.

"Look here." Portland points to the table that they're all surrounding. You dash up and see a note, sealed inside a plastic bag. The writing on it was crude, but legible.

"Earlier today, we had deployed Annapolis north for SIGINT operations near the North Dark Zone." The Captain explains. "We sent Luce, Wren, and Daly up with her as escorts, and they were supposed to link up with a Canadian flotilla. However, they never arrived at the rendezvous point."

A cold hand grips your chest. Anna and the Fletchers in trouble?!

"And then, once they failed to check in, we get THIS floating into the bay in a bottle." Portland points to the note.

"Now, normally, it's the position of United States never to negotiate with terrorists or kidnappers." The Captain sighs. "But... this doesn't appear to be a regular ransom note."

"Huh?" You look at it again. "What's wrong?"

"Firstly, it's written in crayon." Portland points out.

"Yeah, so?" You blink. "You don't write in crayon?"

"I- ugh, nevermind." Portland shakes her head. "And look at the demands."

"It reads more like a 14 year old's Christmas wishlist." San Diego sighs.

"Now, we're not sure what's going on here, but we need to investigate." The Captain grimaces. "However, the Pentagon wants to keep this quiet, for obvious reasons. Now, your original mission was to go escort an incoming freighter convoy, but we need a team to take care of this quickly and discreetly. Portland, can I trust you with this?"

"Of course, sir!" Portland salutes.

"You can take two more ships with you. I can't spare any more." The Captain explains further.

"Hoel, you're coming with me." Portland huffs, before you can even think of volunteering. "I hate to admit it, but you've got a connection with Anna and the other Flecthers, so you'd probably come along whether I wanted to or not."

"Gee, how thoughtful of you!" You smile sweetly.

"How about Haida?" You suggest. "I mean, that far north is basically her home turf. Plus she's gonna need to stretch her sea legs."

"Hmmm, I suppose." Portland nods. "You sure you're up for this, Haida? I don't want you hurting yourself or making your injuries worse."

"I'm good to go!" Haida assures Portland with a salute.

"Excellent." The Captain nods. "We'll have a helicopter ready to take you to their last known position. It's... a rather remote area, so don't count on too much in the way of local support."

"We'll find a way, sir." Portland assures him and turns to you and Haida. "Let's go. There's no time to waste here."

"And be careful, too." The Captain warns. "Even with the northern defense line place, Abyssal raiders and submarines do occasionally slip through the net, so be careful."

"We will, sir." Portland assures him again.

"Go get em!" Johnston says in encouragement. "Make em regret messing with us!"

"Make sure to bring them all back safely." Heerman says worriedly.

"Good luck." White Plains mumbles.

"We'll be waiting!" San Diego says cheerfully.

Nobody says anything as you, Portland, and Haida board the waiting Seahawk, its rotors already powered up and spinning. Like it was when you visited Los Angeles, you get a good view of the East Coast as the Seahawk flies north, following the coastline as it goes. Everything looked quite a bit colder and dull, though that was likely due to the climate of the area.

"We're almost at their last known position!" The pilot announces. "If you want, we can set you down directly there, or we can land a bit further south, in case those bastards are still around!"

"Land us right down here." Portland says. "We'll handle the rest."

"Roger that." The pilot nods and starts dropping altitude, hovering the Seahawk right above the ocean surface. Portland, naturally, is the first one out the door, dropping to the ocean below. You and Haida quickly follow, manifesting your Rigs in the process.

"Ah yeah!" Haida beams as she feels the cold Atlantic wind blow into her face, sending her red hair fluttering everywhere. "Feels just like home!"

Luck her, you suppose. You try not to feel a bit jealous of her good mood.

"Hoel, is your radar picking anything up?" Portland asks you as the Seahawk's rotors grow fainter and fainter as it flies off.

"Well..." You fire up your radar to try and find something, anything. You see a knot of buildings near the coast. Some kind of town or something. However, you're not sure if it's populated or not. Out to the east, you could pick up small, intermittent contacts. Fishing or recreational boats, maybe? Out here on the Atlantic, things were a lot safer, after all. Maybe they saw something? Or maybe they're something else...

"I'm picking up seaborne contacts a few klicks east." You inform Portland. "I think it's worth checking out."

"Understood." Portland nods as she slews around and makes an eastward heading. "Follow me."

You and Haida follow the heavy cruiser closely as you start closing in on the contacts, You keep constant watch on them with your radar, as you start getting a better read on them. You still weren't fully sure what they were, but they were pretty small, and now actively heading away from you. Guess they sniffed out your presence?

"They're heading away from us." You point out.

"Yeah, I can see that." Portland nods.

"Abyssals?" Haida readies her guns. "Why else would they be running from us?"

"Or smugglers or illegal fishermen." Portland grimaces. "I'd love to pursue them and bring them to justice, but frankly, we have bigger things to worry about. We should just head back and investigate that town."

An SH-60B has a range of 800 km, and Newfoundland's about 3,000 km away. You'd need an engine that runs on magical bullshit to get quadruple the range without refueling. An Osprey could do it with auxiliary fuel tanks, but only one-way.

Fortunately, the three of you proved to be much faster, and quickly catch up to the contacts in short order. Up ahead, you could see a trio of small fishing boats, rocking and bobbing in the water, their lights off and trying to speed away as fast as they were able.

"Attention unidentified ships." Portland calls out over the radio. "This is the USS Portland of the United States Navy. Shut off your engines or we will shut them down for you."

No response.

"I repeat, shut down your engines or we will fire!" Portland repeats herself.

Still no response.

"Why do they always have to make it hard?" Portland groans.

"I like it hard!" You grin.

"Lewd." Haida says simply as she sails past you.

Anyways, disabling these ships would be a simple affair. Then again, shooting at ships wasn't really the greatest way to get them to talk.

You begin pouring more speed into your screws. These boats couldn't be going more than ten or so knots. A paltry number compared to your 36 maximum. However, you do note that the seas were getting a bit more heavy, as your body started to rise and fall more frequently as they rode the waves. However, the same was true for the fishing boats, which were slowing down even further. You then catch sight of movement on the deck...

Your radar "sees" the gun before your eyes do, and you're already drawing your bat when one of the fishermen fires his large caliber hunting rifle at you. However, there was no way for him to know that your advanced radar was tracking that bullet the second it left the barrel, give you more than enough time to casually bat it away like a fast ball with a loud CLANG.

"The FUCK, man!?" Another fisherman wrenches the gun out of his compatriot's hands. "You want them to kill us?!"

"OHOHOHO!" You rumble as you sail right up to the lead fishing boat, menacingly slapping your bat against your hand. "Firing on a US Navy shipgirl, eh? Hey, Sweet Pea, what's the rules of engagement for that?"

"We can return fire if we feel our lives are in danger." Portland nods as she flanks the other side of the boat.

"And that guns looks MIGHTY scary..." Haida adds.

"Meaning you might want to stop your little cruise." You point your bat at the fishermen. "Like, right the fuck now."

"Do it!" The apparent captain hisses, and the fishing boats finally grind to a halt, bobbing and weaving in the heavy north Atlantic seas.

"Now what the hell are you doing that you're willing to run away, and SHOOT AT, the US Navy for?" Portland growls, her turrets twitching in anger.

(cont)
>>
>>46995996
"Oh my god." Haida gasps and tugs at your shoulder. You turn your head away from the fishing boat for a second and see it.

An Abyssal Ka-class submarine. Tangled and wrapped up in fishing nets, it was tied up to the three fishing boats, which were obviously towing it to some destination unknown. The way the Abyssal rasped and twitched, it was still alive, but only barely.

"What the hell is this?" Portland glares at the fishermen.

"W-we found it! Just floating in the water!" The lead captain insists. "W-we just thought we'd bring to the authorities-"

"You weren't thinking of selling it on the black market or anything, would you?" Portland raises an eyebrow. "I thought it was made absolutely clear that Abyssals and Abyssal corpses were considered level one biohazards. And I do know that Abyssal corpses and artifacts can fetch a high price in certain markets...."

"W-we weren't doing anything like that! Honest!" The captain squeals.

"Huh." Portland turns to you. "Well, we can't let them keep it. What should we do with it?"

"I guess call it in? Let somebody else take it off their hands?" You suggest.

"I suppose." Portland nods as she looks at the ailing Ka-class. "All right, here's what we do. I'll call in the proper authorities. Haida, you stay here and keep an eye on them. I don't want them trying to steal it away in the night."

"Of course." Haida salutes.

"Take the chance to interrogate them about what they know, particularly if they've seen anything strange or if they've seen Anna and the others. Once everything's done let us know and we'll link up."

"Got it." Haida nods.

"Hoel, you're coming with me." Portland continues. "We'll go check out that town."

"Right." You nod and turn to Haida. "Stay safe."

"Of course." Haida grins. "I'll be fine."

You and Portland leave the Canadian destroyer behind as you steam back towards shore. Up ahead, you can see the small cluster of buildings of the town.

"So, did you notice?" Portland asks you quietly.

"Notice what?" You ask.

"That Ka-class." Portland turns to look at you. "It was damaged. Near death. You really think those fishers could do that sort of damage to it?"

"I suppose not." You shake your head, wondering where Portland was going with this.

"It was bruised and obviously suffering from internal injuries. Obviously from concussive shock." Portland points out. "Considering its a submarine, the most likely candidate is a depth charge."

"You don't mean-" Your eyes widen.

"It's very possible Anna and the others were ambushed by Abyssals." Portland says grimly. "If it had been attacked by any of our other forces, somebody would have reported it already."

Abyssals turning on abyssals? That doesn't make sense, otherwise it would be that this is a black op and the fishermen were given military equipment to provide the DoD intact shipgirl corpses, but that line of thought is treason. So a third party, seperate from the US Navy, Vahlen's DoD research, and the abyssals, who?

"I don't think we know enough yet." You reply simply. "And besides, where do Abyssals get crayons?"

"Might just be a coincidence." Portland sighs. "The message was not particularly specific."

"Well, I suppose that's why we're here, right?" You point out.

"Yeah." Portland nods. "All right, we're almost there. Remember to be POLITE."

"When am I not?" You ask innocently.

"Ugh." Portland rolls her eyes as the two of you approach the shore.

Immediately, you see a pair of people standing on the beach, waving happily. You suppose they were a good first step to start from.

"Hey!" You wave. "Mind if we ask you some questions?"

"Oh, not at all!" The old woman smiles gently. "It's always good to see more shipgirls patrolling our coasts!"

"More?" Portland immediately catches it. "You've seen more like us?"

"Of course!" The old man chuckles. "Couldn't have been more than a few hours ago, in the morning!"

"How many?" You join in the line of questioning.

"Oh, four of them! Cute little buggers they all were!" The old man laughs.

You and Portland look at each other. They were definitely here.

"So, do you know where they went?" Portland asks.

"Up north. Apparently they had business up there." The old woman nods sagely.

"And did you notice anything strange? Or out of place?" You ask.

"Hmmmm, nope. Nothing like that." The old man shakes his head.

"Thanks for the information." Portland bows her head slightly. "But we really have to be going after them-"

"Oh, why not stay a little longer? You poor things look tired and cold!" The old woman tuts. "Some hot soup and cocoa should get you back into tip top shape! Shan't take more than half an hour! How about it?"

"Well..." Portland looks at you uncertainly.

"Well, they seem nice enough." You whisper to Portland. "Might as well. It'll also give Haida a chance to catch up with us."

"I suppose." Portland sighs. "All right."

The both of you step onto the beach, dismissing your rigs as you do so.

"Excellent!" The old lady smiles. "This way! This way!"

The four of you begin walking through the town, which looked absolutely deserted. You ping the place with your radar a few times. No signs of anything suspicious, though you could counted barely a dozen or so people living in the town.

"Seems a bit.. empty." Portland says, voicing what you were thinking.

"Oh, well, this town was already bit on the downslope. All the young 'uns kept leaving for the bigger cities." The old man sighs. "And then the the whole Abyssal troubles cropped up, and made even more people leave! Cowards, all of them! If this were back in my day I'd show them a thing or two!"

"Back in the day?" You wonder.

The old man grins and flexes his arm, which was still surprisingly muscled.

"US Navy! I manned one of the convoy escorts. Even helped shell the beaches of Normandy!"

"Oh wow!" You gasp. "I guess that's why you're being so accommodating to us, huh?"

"Oh no, we just always enjoy guests." The old lady joins in.

The old couple then guides you to a rather humble seaside cottage. Something that would have practically jumped straight out of a movie screen. You both sit at a rather large table while the old couple brings a tray cluttered with round loaves of bread and mugs of steaming hot cocoa.

"It must have been a long journey all the way up here." The old man speaks up as he slides one of the loaves to you. You open it up and- HOLY SHIT. There was CLAM CHOWDER inside it! They were using BREAD AS A BOWL.

Mind. Blown.

"It wasn't all that long. We were actually flown in here." Portland responds calmly while you were still trying to wrap your head around the idea of breadbowls.

"Ah." The old man nods.

"Anyways, it's nice to see more of Kidd's friends coming up to visit her! I was wondering when the Navy would send her a bit of help!"

The both of you freeze.

"...Kidd?" Portland nearly chokes on her soup.

"Oh yes, she's been patrolling this stretch of coast all by herself!" The old man laughs. "She's a bit of an eccentric one, saying how she's put our whole town under a 'protection racket', and we have to keep paying her protection money!"

"Is that so..." A dark look clouds Portland's face.

"But, she never asks for money!" The old lady giggles. "Always modest things like a few candy bars or a couple of gallons of ice cream. Nothing a quick run to the store can solve!"

"I.... I see." Portland's smiles became ever more forced by the second. "Do you happen to know where Kidd is living right now?"

"Oh, at this old lighthouse further north up the coast. You can't miss it!" The old man nods.

"Well, thank you for the meal." Portland bows politely as she not so gently drags you out of the house.

"W-what are you doing?!" You hiss. "I didn't even finish my hot-"

"Can you stop thinking about food for a second?" Portland hisses. "Kidd isn't on the active naval register, which means..."

"A new shipgirl?!?" You gasp.

"Apparently not a friendly one." Portland frowns. "This is serious, Hoel. We can't have lone shipgirls running around doing as they please. We need to handle this NOW."

"Can't we at least wait for Haida?" You ask Portland. "IF this really is a rogue shipgirl we're dealing with, we'll need all the help we can get."

"All right." Portland sighs as she tries to calm herself down.

"That's the spirit, Sweet Pea!" You grin as you pat the cruiser on the back.

The two of you head back inside, where you and Portland proceed to glean as much knowledge about Kidd as you could from the old couple. Apparently, Kidd had shown up a couple months ago, protecting the coast from the occasional Abyssal raider. But really, she was just a breath of fresh air, considering the other shipgirls often patrolled farther out to see and didn't bother stopping by. All in all, it seemed Kidd was well liked by the local populace.

Haida finally catches up, and after some cooing and cheek pinching about just how adorable she was, the three of you say your goodbyes to the couple and steam north as fast as you were able. After all, it was beginning to get dark, night battles were not exactly ideal situations.

"So... would Kidd really be hostile to us?" You wonder. "Considering she captured Anna and the others?"

"It's possible." Portland nods. "After all, all of us shipgirls are different just like humans are. I wouldn't be surprised if one with no respect for authority existed."

"I suppose." You mumble.

"Well, if she's like any other Fletcher, that's probably right on the money." Haida shrugs.

"Hey!" You snap at her.

"Quiet, you two!" Portland hisses and points. Sure enough, you could see a lone lighthouse jutting out from the top of a high bluff, it's lone light shining like a beacon in the dimming light. "We're here."

The lighthouse itself didn't look particularly fortified or secured... or even inhabited. However, looks could always be deceiving.

"Don't worry, Sweet Pea, I got this." You assure her.

"Really?" Portland asks skeptically.

"Of course! I'm a Fletcher! I know how my class works!" You grin. "Just watch, this will be done in a flash!"

"Fine, I'll trust you on this." Portland sighs.

"What are you going to do?" Haida asks, genuinely curiously.

"Just watch!" You grin as you take a deep breath, and then yell, "HEY! NERD! COME OUT AND FIGHT ME!"

You can hear the nice, meaty THWACK of Portland facepalming.

"How the hell do you think that would accomplish any-"

"OI! WHO BE CALLING THE THE MOST FEARSOME PIRATE OF THE SEVEN SEAS A NEEEEEEEEERD!?!" A voice booms out in response as a shadow falls upon you all. Silhouetted by the lighthouse's light stood a young brunette girl with long braided hair, an overly large pirate hat complete with a little bird wearing its own pirate regalia sitting on top, and a cutlass. "YOU BE SINGING YER OWN DEATH WARRANTS, YA SCALLYWAGS!"
