Samson, more resolute than before, is pleased to hear back through the little network he's built up in the prison with Edwyg's help and years of connections. He's going to return home, he tells himself, and every inch of his body is telling him the way back is gonna be bloody as all hell.

Mere weeks ago, he would've recoiled at this fact, but now... His mother's corpse is a soulless soldier for the empire, and his friend and inspiration met the same fate long ago. He needs to take in their spirits, passion, allow Raleigh and Marion to live on past themselves, and he knows both of them would do this.

Dyrus, crossing the desert, is having a slightly worse time, but not necessarily a BAD one. They stocked up plenty supplieswise, but they've still needed to dodge Gerxel-run cities and oases as they attempt to reach the shrinking Vautou territories, which means frugality in the desert.

"Here we are in Hawk Oasis," Denim says, finally, the first of the Gerxel-run cities in the Desert they've been able to venture into. "It was only recently recaptured from the Vautou by Lady Rene, Cato, and myself, so not many settlers are here, and I've been able to make sure it's staffed only with Imperial agents I trust. I've been planning on making a run for Chief Paisley for some time, if I may be honest."

Speaking of Rene, she's the same as ever. She's been in Garou Valley with Director Chiffon and his assistant Cashmere for some time now, and still they've yet to encounter any Tarvosian Nomads. Currently, they rest in the village of Ahua, a vibrant Wolfskin community. Many human-distrusting eyes are on them, though Saye, Chiffon, and Cashmere have vouched for the Imperial gang.

Rene's not thinking much about all that, though. Honestly, she's just concerned about Veiz. Ever since she started studying with Methodius, she's seemed... Distant, even after it was determined that the sisters needed to support one another.

You find yourself wondering as you sit at some sort of outdoor eatery where all of the meat (hardly any fruits or vegetables or grains, just... A ton of fresh meat) is just... Hanging on display. At a place like this, having your food actually cooked is a special request for people with dietary concerns such as "seriously, I won't eat raw meat." The locals teasingly call this preparation "human style," but they're more than willing to accommodate Veiz when she asks that raw meat that's been hanging outside be prepared.

"Their immune systems may be fine-tuned to consume things like this without much trouble, but we're hardly them," Veiz says.

"And they still agreed to actually cook it," you respond. "Still, though... It's surprising to hear you ask for well-done."

"...I hate it exactly as much as you think," Veiz says, "but I would rather not fall ill and die over some ill-preserved meat just because I prefer it bloody."

"Hey!" The shop's owner calls out from inside, "we only use the finest freshly-killed cuts here! Diseases still taste nasty, you know!"

"Right, right... My apologies, culture shock," Veiz says. "I haven't been here long."

"Don't worry about it, miss!" The wolf-chef calls again. "And, uh, hey, how did your sister want hers again?"

"Honestly," you call back, "I prefer a well-done steak!"

"Eheh, humans are weird..." He says, chuckling, albeit, as you would find out when he brought the steaks out several minutes later, obliging.

"At least I've superior taste buds to you, sister," Veiz teases. "How can you savor a rubbery loaf of wasted meat?"

"I prefer it thoroughly cooked," you defend yourself.

"And I'm simply calling that incorrect," Veiz says. "I've never understood it."

As the chef brings out your delicious rubbery loaves of what was once a fantastic cut, as well as silverware also kept around for hoity-toity human visitors such as yourselves, you find yourself digging in and Veiz forcing herself to choke down some form of sustenance.

"You know," you say, "this has to be the first time we've spoken at length since we left the Tower of Longevity, and it's arguing over something this trivial... I told you, Veiz, we ought to grieve together."

"It has nothing to do with that," Veiz says. "I've simply... Had a lot on my mind pertaining to magical studies now that I'm proficient in Dark Tomes."

"If you say so," you respond to your sister, respecting the fact that it's not something she feels like bugging you with. Just in case, however, you add on, "I'm still very much interested in your growth, though, sister. Do share some stories of your studies sometime."

"Perhaps in the future," Veiz says. "For now, though, we ought to be prepared for the nomads. If they're truly becoming more aggressive in their resistance in recent days..."

"Mm," you say. "Even if we should finally locate whichever group Chief Tien is riding with, eliminate him, there's no telling what the rest will do."

"Our newly-acquired skills will doubtless be of significant aid to our cause," Veiz says. "Still, though, to even be given an Imperial Horse as a parting gift by his excellency."

"I just wish the locals would get along better with my mount," you say. "The people of Ahua all seem so wary of horses..."

"Their sworn enemies are a people skilled horse-archers, Rene, so the initial apprehensiveness is quite natural," Veiz says. "but more importantly... What's his name?"

"His name is... Lyka," you respond, honestly not having been certain of what to call him but feeling put on the spot, so you just sort of said one of the few you were strongly considering.

"Lyka... Isn't that a girls' name?" Veiz asks.

"I suppose it is, normally" you say. "What of it?"

"It's... Not a problem, really," Veiz says, "simply not what I would have chosen."

"Well, he's my horse," you say, "and it's not like he'll ever know the difference."

"Fair points, both of those," Veiz says. "I'm certain you and Lyka will make a fine team."

You take your beloved butler for a ride around the fields surrounding Ahua, in search of potential attacking Tarvosians. You've been in the area for awhile now, and among a constantly-traveling people you can be certain word travels fast.

Cicero clutches you tightly from behind as you ride, making you feel far more confident about this patrol, as you discuss recent and near-future events.

"We keep being sent away from the resistance's main forces," Cicero comments, "the further East they push. How long could that luck possibly hold out?"

"I'd hardly call it luck," you say, "quite the opposite, in fact. We could probably defeat them if we were to put all of our efforts into a concentrated assault..."

"But don't forget that Director Waldrick attempted that with all of the might of the Coastal Region at his back," Cicero says, not mincing words. He knows you can talk such statements, "and it failed to stop them."

"They exploited fatal weaknesses in my father's current status," you respond. "Had he been uninjured, he could have cut them all down himself."

"Perhaps, but we may never know... All we can do is put our faith in Director Cato and Lord Denim to prevent them from crossing the desert."

You hold up a hand suddenly, stopping the conversation, after noticing a human on a horse in the distance. There just looks to be one, but that bandanna over his head, long braid, and his very patchwork-looking clothes scream "Tarvosian" even from outside of his earshot, and he notices you as quickly as you do him.

"Have your weapons ready," you instruct your lover, "this might be a trap."

Cicero nods in response, having one hand close to his concealed blades. The other squeezes your hand quickly, before breaking away so you can better prepare your own weaponry. Since you're approaching, you prepare your steel lance.

Still, though, your cautious approach is met with one of the man's own, and as you draw close you can tell that he's a lad of no more than 20, very likely less. That being said, he is packing a Killer Bow of his own, albeit currently lowered. Perhaps he noticed you put your bow away and determined you weren't immediately out for blood.

"Er, hey, brother," the man says, still noting your lance. "I'm no bandit, I swear, I swear, I swear! Simply a nomad out for a spell of solitude... Er, your boyfriend there's no Wolfskin, is he?"

"Haven't heard that one in awhile," Cicero says, slightly bitterly.

"He means it in earnest," you say, reassuring Cicero.

"I know, but..."

"Oh, oh, oh! Did I strike a nerve?" The man says. "Sorry, it's just, you're very... Hairy, and... No, no, no, digging yourself deeper, Nahuel. I'm sorry, sorry, sorry! Name's Nahuel! "We're Imperial Agents-"

"H-h-hey, you've got a lot of guts just SAYING that to..."

"Refrain from interrupting," Cicero scolds Nahuel, shooting him an intimidating look. "She needs to finish what she's saying."

"Thank you, dear," you say, smiling a moment before clearing your throat. There WAS an extra sort of side-objective Director Chiffon wished for your help in... Unearthing those man eaters among his ranks. Truthfully, you tell him, "we've been tasked with uncovering corruption within the Wolfskin region, bringing to light the kidnappers and cannibals who give its good people a bad name."

"More internal affairs, huh?" Nahuel asks, expression going from hostile to gloomy. "That's... Well, well, well, I wish you the best."

"What does that mean?" Cicero asks.

"Every one the Empire sends just... Disappears and ends up in bones in one of our camps, no matter how we try to protect and work with them. The Wolfskin are fearsome, and I grieve for whoever get sent into their pit..." Noting your expressions, he laughs nervously and quickly adds, "but that surely, surely, surely won't happen to you two! You look like you can take care of yourselves after all!"

"Yes," you say with certainty. "We will succeed."

"Something about your confidence... I almost believe you won't get eaten like all the rest!"

"Still, though, I'm curious..." You say. "The Tarvosians are wary of Wolfskin, correct?"

"And why wouldn't we be after all the hell they've given us? Why, even those who don't gobble us up from the shadows lord over humanity, or turn a blind eye to our plight..."

"Then why are you riding so close to a village of Wolfskin all alone?" You ask. "What is your true intent for riding out here?"

"I... I... I..." Nahuel skips on an answer, not really sure what to say. After several moments, however, his response is more than telling enough: he just turns around and rushes away faster than your lance arm can push forward.

"So... Can we assume he was a scout?" You ask, readying your brave bow.

"No," you say, turning around on your own. "He has little to report but what they undoubtedly already knew, and if he were to not return his allies would only hurry forward anyway."

"Good point... Should we just return then?" He asks.

"That's what I was doing," you reply as you ride away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUFmMvG0nVE

"So we should expect an attack?" Chiffon asks rhetorically. "Just lovely... The average group of Tarvosian nomads has about... two dozen able warriors to their number. Between me, your men, Cashmere here, and the local militia... There's 15 of us, and that kid with the staff wouldn't hurt a fly even if he had the swole for it, so effectively 14."

"There's only six wolfskin able to fight in this village?" Cicero asks. "If assaults from the nomads are to be expected, should more not be trained?"

"You've been fighting alongside Saye awhile in a desert she's not at all used to," Chiffon responds. "You can understand why not many of us need to be able to fight well in order to protect a whole town. All for the better anyway, since beaststones aren't always the easiest to forge..."

"The plan involves actually staying awake for once, Lady Cashmere," you scold. "We're at serious risk here."

"I, uh... Hate to bully you about your problem, Cashmere, but Lady Rene's right," Chiffon says to the wolf-woman you're STILL certain didn't exactly get the job for her merits.

"Right..." Cashmere yawns, quite obnoxiously, before rubbing her eyes. "I'll get serious... Anyway, do we have a plan..?"

"Still no," you say. "We're working on it."

"Nngh... Right... Just put me on the frontlines, alright? The rest of you can just..." Another yawn. "Back me up..."

"All by yourself, Cashmere?" Chiffon asks, raising an eyebrow in concern. "You know I'd never doubt you, but two dozen arrows through the chest will kill even a Wolfseggner."

"Fine, then..." Another yawn, and she scratches her rear quite ungracefully. "Hmm... How many of us does the scout know about?"

"Just myself and Cicero," you respond.

"Then... Alright, you two and two... No, four is *smack* more convincing... four of the local militia can back me up. Everyone else should... Should use the time we have to hurry out of the town and lie in wait to surprise them from the rear..."

"So you were at least paying more attention than we thought," Cicero remarks. "I apologize for at least doubting you there..."

"It's better than no plan at all," you say.

"Glad I've... Proven my *yawn* usefulness to you, then..."

"I guess that means I'm in charge of your squad?" Chiffon asks.

"For the moment," you say. "Marduk and Veiz aren't particularly the leadership types, after all."

"Gotcha," he says, giving you a thumbs up. "I'll bring 'em back to you without a scratch after the fight ends!"

"I'm... Confident you will!" You say, unsure how to respond.

Within a few hours, Chiffon, two of the local militia, and all of your subordinates bar your beloved Cicero are out quite a ways North from the village, thought to be outside the area the nomads are anticipated to survey now that their scout's been sent home early.

In time, you and your current companions hear the sound of horse-hooves, far more than the four your Lyka has. Your estimate: two dozen.

Once the lot of them arrive, one man with a particularly bushy beard, Nahuel by his side, calls out. "I am Tense, horse-brother to Chief Tien! The subhumans of this village will surrender all of their beaststones for immediate destruction!"

"Sub..." Cashmere, standing slightly ahead of you, merely droops her head and makes a tired sort of snort/yawn mix. "That's not a very nice thing to say..."

"That demeanor, that unwarranted cockiness in napping before your foe... Grh, you're subdirector Cashmere, are you not?! Excellent, then! Director Chiffon will have your pelt in the mail, man-eater!"

"That's a... Heavy accusation to make," the tired she-wolf says slowly as Tense draws his Silver Bow and rides forward slightly more. She enters the large, transformed state all wolfskin with beaststones have access to, rushing towards Tense and his men.

The other four unpromoted wolfskin transform, and Cicero readies a psychic staff less-than-confidently.

You, meanwhile, ride all around quite distractingly, aiming your bow at some of the other mounted archers. Putting two arrows in one man before his corpse falls off his horse, you note the militia members split off into groups of two and gang up on enemies while paired up like that.

Everyone is momentarily distracted by a high-pitched shriek of terror, which turns out to come from the mouth of Nahuel. Cashmere, nearby, has quite gruesomely ripped through both Tense and his horse, leaving them both to rot before hopping at a nearby fellow who could only stare in awe.

While most of the horses are kept from panicking by their masters, kept in the battle despite the gruesome display, Nahuel's gets spooked, and he can only hold onto the reins for dear life as the beast rushes away from the scene in terror. "Stop, stop, stop! We can't abandon them here!" He ineffectually shouts as he rides West, also far from the path of the unbeknownst-to-them Chiffon's trap.

Cashmere takes a few arrows to the everything despite her skillful dodging of every blow, but Cicero's physic staff manages to keep her alive.

Comparing Cashmere's very cavalier fighting style and Saye's to the more thought-out actions of the militia make it very clear to you who your own companion learned from, though Saye was never so... Excruciatingly gruesome.

After your group clears out about ten of the two-dozen horsemen, counting Nahuel's retreat, Cashmere stretches and yawns as she reverts to her more humanoid form, producing a vulnerary from her open shirt and chugging it down before laying down, arms folded behind her. You, Cicero, and the other wolfskin are all between her and the remaining combatants, sure, but still.

You think to say something scoldingly to her, but decide not to bother, simply focusing on the fight.

"Someone call for a pincer movement?" Marduk calls, leading the reinforcing party in from the North, twirling his Spear in the air. In response, an arrow strikes him through his less-important-to-him left arm. "Oh, shit," he quickly and painfully adds to that cool entrance announcement before falling back a bit and dismounting, realizing this may be an even more dangerous situation for his wyvern than fighting the Vautou. Omar scurries over, immediately taking to Mend staff usage as Veiz, a transformed Chiffon+Saye and the militiamen, and Alfred rush onto the scene.

With their added might and the element of surprise, the rest of the foes fall easily, with Alfred and Veiz co-signing the death warrant of the second-to-last to fall with a simultaneous Killing Edge/Yotsmungand combo, and Chiffon quite simply leaping and slugging the final-final no-longer-a-survivor from behind twice, killing him quickly.

"Yes, nothing awry on this front," you say, eyeballing the bodies Cashmere is laying in. You continue in an annoyed tone, "your secretary checked out halfway through the fight, though."

"But she really took care of stuff before we arrived, huh?" He asks.

"Yeah... I've never seen someone so lazy yet deadly," you say, eyeballing Saye. "Someone came close, though..."

"It's a side-effect of Lady Cashmere's abilities," Saye is quick to defend. "She asked Methodius to fuse her with her own Beaststone so she could transform at any time. It... Takes up a LOT of energy to maintain her form like that, but it makes her stronger and faster than any other Wolfskin!"

"Even me!" Chiffon readily admits. "It had never been attempted before, and the wizard guy wasn't even sure it was a good idea, but she insisted. "That's... I really was wrong about Lady Cashmere," you admit. "And there's... No other Wolfskin like that?"

"As much as I appreciate Cashmere's willingness to try it," Chiffon answers, "I had to kindly ask Methodius to never do it again. The side-effects are still pretty... Apparent, even if I don't hold them against either of 'em. So 'Project Stonefused' only had one suspect!" Chiffon grins. "That bein' said, I should probably go check up on her... Napping in dead bodies can get you really sick, after all!"

Cashmere goes off to do that, while Saye approaches Marduk, who clutches his recently-wounded/healed arm and spins his elbow around a bit. "Whew..." He says, before giving Saye a nod. "What's up?"

"Just thought I'd check up on you," she responds.

"Yeah, I'm good... It's not even sore anymore. You already know how healing magic works... Er, you're not just hangin' out with me because Baker and I are buddies, are you? No obligation to do that."

"It's something to talk to someone about," Saye responds.

Omar scurries around the battlefield, looking for anyone he can conceivably heal up, getting his wish with a couple of the Wolfskin militia members, with Cicero observing and deciding the kid ought to build up his healing repertoire in his stead.

Veiz and Alfred have a bit of a quiet conversation which you can't pick up from here.

>A. Talk to someone(s) (specify)

Er, *"Chiffon goes off to do that," not Cashmere.

Two threads ago I mix up Denim and Cato's names, this thread I mix up Chiffon and Cashmere's.

You say quickly to Chiffon, not dismounting, "one got away when his horse was frightened. I suspect he'll be riding back here to aid the brothers he doesn't know fell before too long, so... I should take care of that."

Immediately upon confirming you heard his statement, you ride westward, fully expecting the young nomad to believe there's a fight to return to.

Your ride takes quite awhile, but ultimately your suspicions are confirmed.

Nahuel, looking a combination of super determined and worried for his fallen companions' sakes, has his horse skid to a halt when you and your own appear before him.

"Y-you again!" He exclaims, trying to sound tough. "You say you're here to help my people, but then turn around and let one of those monsters rip Tense to shreds! No wonder you imperials and wolfskin get along so well... You're all a bunch of wolves!"

"..." You don't say a word, merely having your bow at the ready for when he inevitably tries something.

"I've struck more criticals than most of my companions combined! Don't think I can't do the same to you!"

>A. Invite him to try
>B. Finish the attacking nomads off
>C. This is a WARNING. Everyone else is dead, and he will be too if he keeps going past you
>D. Write-in response
>E. Freely let him pass and watch the fireworks

"This is the second time you've misunderstood me, Nahuel," you say. "This is a warning that you don't want to pass by me."

"You can't stop me! My fellow warriors need me!"

"They're fine in the afterlife without you," you respond. "Your horse saved your life, Nahuel."

"Wait, wait, wait... What? You mean..."

You nod. "You're the only survivor. Return to your encampment or fellow... Not-warriors, or whatever you wish to call them. There's no point in attempting to be righteous and joining the dead pointlessly."

"You..." Nahuel shuts his eyes, putting his bow away. "Thank you, Internal Affairs. You've saved my life today..."

"Just leave my sight," you say, eyes fixed on him. "People are bound to come check on me if we take too long."

"Right, right, right... It pains me to know that we'll likely be enemies next we meet, friend," he says before dashing off Southwest.

You briefly consider putting a couple arrows in his back for that last remark, but your conscience wins out for once in your career. You opt not to pursue him, simply turning around and riding back to Ahua Village.

The bodies of the fallen nomads vanish in the dead of night, with no one claiming any knowledge of how it happened.

>To be continued next thread
Not much to comment on here. Nahuel won't show up for a little while now and probably won't impact the plot TOO heavily by not dying, but I do have minor plans for him now that he didn't die here.

Thanks for playing, as always. Update twitter/ask.fm are qmgrandflocto, and I'll be around in-thread to chat for awhile.
