My name is Cecile, and I'm sixteen years old. I already thought my life was odd, what with my parents having moved halfway across the country for their new job and leaving me in the care of my older sister... but then my best friend went and had a book shipped to my house that ended up giving me superpowers.

In order to try and help Charlotte calm down after everything that's been happening, I've (with Gabrielle's help) managed to drag her out of the hotel for the day. Things have been going pretty well so far, too- Charlotte traumatized some little brats who totally deserved it, we won a couple of keychains in a shooting game, and I won a home-cooked meal from her through my prowess at bumper cars... but now one of the little animal torturer kids has just sicced his mother on Charlotte.

There goes our good day.

>"See, it's the lady in the black-and-white dress!" a kid shouts, dragging a woman who I'm assuming is his mother towards us. "That's the witch we saw at the river!"
>"She pulled on my arm and said that she was gonna eat my liver!" he cries.

>Oh God damn it.
Charlotte simply folds her arms over her chest as the little sociopath boy and his middle-aged mother stop in front of her. It doesn't even seem like she cares one bit that she's being called out like this.

"Excuse me," the woman says, her words filled with that kind of passive-aggressive anger that I can't say is unexpected, "my son informs me that you -accosted- him while he and his cousin were playing by the river."
"Her owl stole Bobby's hat and threw it in the river too!" the boy cries.

And then he immediately hides behind his mother when Charlotte glances at him.

"I can't say that I've seen anyone else out here today dressed in a way that could be confused with yours," the woman says, "so-"
"Wait a minute," I say, pointing at the boy behind her. "Aren't you one of those kids who wanted to torture animals?"
"My son was just PLAYING in the mid," she replies, glaring at me with utter disdain. "And since I don't recall him saying anything about a second girl involved in this, I would appreciate it if you would butt out."

Nope. No profanity, no violence, none of that. I'm on a happy date with my girlfriend and I'm going to defend her without causing a further scene and making things even worse than they already are.

Even though I'd love to slap her right in her stupid fat face for not raising her kids right.

"For your information," I say, adjusting my glasses so that the reflected light from the sun (possibly boosted with some of my own) shines right into her eyes, "I was right there at the riverbed when everything went down. So unlike you, I have a first-hand account of what happened."

The way her face is bunching up into an ugly sneer would suggest that she doesn't appreciate my attitude. Good thing for me that I don't really care.

"And if your son's idea of 'playing' is to crush wild animals with rocks and beat them to death with sticks then maybe YOU should've taught him better," I say, looking the angry mother dead in the eye.
"What gives you the right to judge-" she stammers. "my son would NEVER-"
"He did," I cut her off, "and he's lucky that he got off with just having his arm grabbed as opposed to having the cops called on him for animal cruelty."
"So you ADMIT that she laid her hands on my son!?" the woman growls while pointing at Charlotte.
"I don't see any marks on him," Charlotte replies with her face devoid of expression. "Do you?"

"Well, kid?" I call out to the little brat who's using his fat mother as a human shield. "Do you have any bruises to show for it?"
"Don't you talk to my child!" his mother snaps at me.

remove it

"Then YOU talk to him," I snap right back. "Ask him what exactly it was that he was doing that caused Charlotte to go over to where him and his little psycho friend to begin with."

The woman tenses up like she's about to take a swing at me, but then catches herself and instead turns to her son.

"Go ahead and tell them, honey," she says in that condescending way that some parents talk to their kids. "You weren't doing anything bad, -right-?"
"Uh-"

Having lost his mommy-shield, the boy slowly directs his gaze towards us... and immediately snaps his eyes shut once he meets eyes with Charlotte.

So an owl stole his Bobby’s hat? That’s a bit different from the previous claim that she stole this boy’s hat.

Not even getting into, you know owls that are bigger than humans.

After a comment about that, I’d actually like to calm down and talk to the mother seriously. She cannot be happy to raise a serial lier and neither would Bobby’s mother be happy that Bobby is inciting other kids to hit animals with sticks. Which seemed to be the preferred method to find out "if the turtle would bite a stick".
>>

It looks like this kid isn't just a little psycho, he's also a liar. And I am NOT about to let that slide.

"You didn't drop that rock because you were scared," I say, "I -saw- you slam it down as hard as you could."
"Did not!" the boy cries. "Mom, she's telling lies on me!"
"I might wear glasses but I'm not blind," I reply. "I know what I saw... but apparently you didn't?"
"That 'little stick' your little friend picked up was about half the size of my wrist and easily as long as my arm," Charlotte interjects.

He reels back like her words just slapped him across the face.

"Not to mention everything you said about that owl," I say to him, then turn to his mother. "Does that even -almost- sound real?"

She continues to glare at me, though her resolve seems to be starting to crumble under the weight of how stupid her kid is.

"W... well clearly he was exaggerating slightly," the woman says, "...but that doesn't discredit everything he said. Nor does it change the fact that you laid your hands on a-"

Charlotte holds up her cellphone into the woman's face, which shuts her up instantly. And as she focuses on whatever is on the screen that Charlotte is showing her, her face quickly drains of color.

"J- Jesus Christ, why would you show me-" she stammers.
"This is the scene left after I scared your son and his friend off," Charlotte replies as she finally lowers her phone. "I was -going- to spare you what I had to see, but since your son here refused to own up to his own actions..."
"Why would you even take a picture of that!?"
"I've long since learned that the parents of children who do horrible things are often the quickest to defend them," Charlotte says, staring her down. "And although words rarely work in cases like this, I find that pictures work well enough."

In the face of clear evidence of her child's wrongdoing, the woman finally backs away from us and lets go of her anger... and then turns to her son.

"I- I didn't do it! I bet SHE smashed that turtle up and took the picture just to frame us!"
"And how did you know what was -on- the picture?" Charlotte asks. "I only showed your mother.

As the realization that he just completely incriminated himself sets in, the little boy's eyes grow wider and wider... and then his mother grabs him by the wrist and starts shaking him.

"I can not BELIEVE that you went and embarrassed me in front of all these people how dare you lie to me I swear to God when we get home you are going to be grounded for at least a month and I'm going to call Bobby's parents too and I'm sure they won't appreciate how much you two's little stunt caused me to..."

The woman continues to rant at her crying little brat while dragging him away. And as far as she's concerned, it's like the two of us don't even exist anymore. Not that I actually -wanted- to have to interact with her any more than I already have, of course.

"...not even so much as an apology," Charlotte sighs. "And she doesn't even care about what her son did, only that he caused her to lose face."

Tell the mother off? Children are not there for her to show off in public, if she doesn’t respect her only child enough to actually teach him morals, this is her fault. Not the child’s.

Also, express condolences to the child for having a terrible mother. It’s no wonder the child lies with a mother like that.
>>
>>47093357
Kids that are only not shitty because they fear their parents are shitty people at their core anyway.
>>
>>47093485
There are parenting methods other than inspiring fear in your kids.
>>
>>47093556
But not good ones. Young children are incapable of actual morality, the best child in the world will be an absolute shitmonger if it thinks it can get away with it and sees some benefit in doing so, which is why the best parents are perceived by their kids as omniscient all-powerful authority figures.
>>
>>47093556

My parents and grandparents were never harsh with me and I was pretty kind and selfless for a kid. I mean I can only remember so much, but I remember that I always shared even things that I cared about like candy, and tried to cheer others up when they were crying by being friendly.

Children mainly learn through imitation, self interest and trying to test the allowed limits until something stops them. This mother is a terrible role model, reinforces the self interest and doesn’t stop undesirable behaviour as long as her personal self-interest is not harmed.

"I hope those two didn't ruin this place for you," I mumble as I watch the horrible mother and her horrible son walk sway from us.

I turn to her and grimace.

"I'm really sorry to hear that," I say.

"You're okay with sticking around?" I ask.
"Who's the leader again?"

She smiles at me like that entire ugly episode never even happened.

"Alright, I get it," I nod. "Our next stop..."

I scan the area for something that might take my mind off things... and only one thing in particular draws my gaze.

"Ferris wheel," I say. "Unless you're afraid of heights, I mean."
"I am not," Charlotte shakes her head.
"Then on we go," I say, taking her hand as I lead the way.

As we make our way towards the ferris wheel (and its surprisingly long line), I can't help but notice that Charlotte's being more quiet than usual.

"Umm..." I glance at her, "...are you sure that nothing's bothering you?" I ask.
"It's fine," Charlotte shakes her head.
"You don't have to hide it from me if there is," I reply. "And holding it all in won't help anything."

Suddenly her grip on my hand tightens.

"It's been a while since I had to deal with a -normal- person who made me that angry, that's all," Charlotte sighs.
"What, the kid?" I ask.
"No," she shakes her head. "The mother. You have no idea how much selfcontrol it took for me to keep from doing snapping at her. Or punching her in her stupid fat face. Or reenacting scenes from The Birds with her as the star."

With her jaw clenched tightly and her fangs bared, Charlotte takes a couple of very deep breaths.

Bit by bit, the ferris wheel loads up with passengers and we find ourselves rising higher and higher into the air. By the time the normal rotation cycle begins, we're already about halfway up.

And since it's nice and quiet up here and I no longer have to worry about prying eyes, I scoot up close to Charlotte and wrap my arm around her.

"This is a nice change from the rest of the stuff we did today, huh," I say to her.
"Mmhmm," Charlotte nods. "It's peaceful."

Exactly what I needed after dealing with all that stress.

"I wish it could be like this more often," Charlotte says. "Just you and me doing normal people stuff instead of having to worry about our lives being in danger or our loved ones threatened."
"You're not the only one," I sigh. "But that's why we need to enjoy this while we can, right?"
"Yes."

Charlotte rests her head against my chest as the ferris wheel continues to rise, giving us an increasingly better view of our surroundings. And when we reach the very top, the entire park and a good deal of the city itself is in full view.

"This really is a beautiful area," Charlotte murmurs into my chest.
"Most of it, anyways," I reply.
"Even the run-down areas have much more charm than a lot of the places I've been to," she says with a weak chuckle.

I take a few seconds to map out where we are in relation to the rest of the city in my mind, then crane my neck around to figure out which direction we're facing...

"It's over there," I say, pointing out the window.

I then take hold of all the light that's passing through it, bending and magnifying bit by bit... which results in a really weird zoom lens effect. As the image draws closer to my neighborhood, I shift the light around to further focus on the right area until I've got the perfect path.

"Here it is," I say, pulling the image closer and closer to my house.
"Ooh, you really did it!" Charlotte says with genuine awe in her voice. "That's amazing!"
"I know, right?"

I accept all compliments, especially when it comes to uses of my spectacular light powers that don't involve killing people.

"Oh, someone's outside?" I say, pulling the image evn closer. It's giving me kind of a headache but the amusement factor is well worth it.
"Looks like Allison," Charlotte replies.
"Huh, I guess she's washing her car."

With one of those mitt things on her hands, Allison spreads soapy water all over the hood of her car...

"Eww, she's shaking her butt," I say, grimacing.
"Ooh, so she is," Charlotte replies.
"Eww, I can't believe you're actually checking out her butt!"
"Well it -is- a cute butt..." she laughs. "It looks just like yours."
"UGH."

The shock from hearing her compare my behind to my sister's is enough to make me lose hold of the image entirely. And in a flash, everything snaps right back into place.

Some of the stuff they did sounds amusing but I'm nowhere near caught-up with the show.

>Any other quests you currently follow or used to follow?
Nope, nothing at this point in time.

Charlotte doesn't discriminate as long as they're fun to fondle.

Incapable of actual morality yes but we mimic the morality of everyone around us reasonably well. Also, even a young child has an acute sense of when it's getting less candy or less toys than another child, and will call this out. This sense of fairness is, in a way, a morality - though we often don't realise that the fairness applies to people other than ourselves.

Huh. I just realised that my tendency to lash out aggressively towards others when I was a child, was something I inherited from my mother.
When I moved out I calmed down rapidly.
Huh. Never knew that. Oh well. Nice blogpost senpai!
