"Siiis!" I pound on the wooden barrier separating myself from our room. "Open the door! I'm sorry she didn't say yes!"

"Go away." a weak, but familiar voice, hisses from inside.

I don't know why I'm suddenly at fault for this! What is going on?

I am Itsukuma Masami. Today is looking to be another bad day.
Fortunately, it's not for the reasons that usually cause me to have a bad day. No kidnappings, no monster attacks, nothing like that.
This time, it's for more nefarious reason which is harder to deal with: Sister drama.

"Sis! She didn't really say 'no'! She just- Didn't say yes! That's all! Maybe you can think of a way for it to work!"
"Go. away."
This is one of the hardest battles I've fought. I can't even get past a plain wooden door!

All of this started when my sister, Kaori, revealed that she was keeping a puppy on school grounds. She wants to keep it, and I really think she should, but then-

"I-if you come out, we'll go to that ice cream place you like!" I try to bargain with her.
Silence.
"N-No! Of course not!" She seems more lively, "Go away!"
Darn! That usually works!

Where was I? Oh yes, -but then, I had the idea of just going and asking Mom directly. With some arguing from Kaori, of course.

I should have just kept it a secret. Mom didn't exactly say yes, and that destroyed Kaori's confidence. She ran into our room and locked the door.
It's my room too; how dare she lock me out.

"Come on, Kaori! We can just ask her again!"
"It doesn't work that way, Masami. I'm gonna stop talking to you."

"Kaori!"
..
"KAORI!"

>Okay, don't panic, walk away for a few minutes and try again later.
>Panic, run downstairs and see if there's anyone who can help.
>Go find something else to do and maybe she'll calm down?

Right, this isn't getting me anywhere.

I should go do something else for a while.

"Okay, sis. Please tell me when you're ready to talk."

You're just gonna go downstairs, and not think about it! Yeah! That's what you're gonna do.
You are certainly NOT going to go try to find a way to meddle in it with your sisters.

Nope.
The thought didn't even cross your mind!

"Hey Masami." Julie is standing at the bottom the stairs, looking up at you. "What was that about?"
"Yeah." Haruko seems disappointed, "Did you make Kaori mad?"

..
"Maybe."

"Darn it Masami." Haruko grabs my hand, "What did I tell you about that?!"
"I- uh- don't remember."

Julie grabs my other hand, "Don't make Kaori mad because you sleep in the same room as her. Now you'll just have to sleep on the couch tonight!"

Uh oh, she's right.
If I don't fix Kaori's mood, I'll be sleeping on the couch!

"Wait! you two! Can you help make Kaori feel better?"
"Well, it depends." Haruko crosses her arms, "How mad is she?"

"J-just a little! Mom wouldn't let her keep the puppy, so-"

"Oh, that's it then? We just have to make Mom say yes, then!"
"It'll be easy! Leave everything up to us!"

I have a bad feeling about this one.

>No you two, no going and making this worse.

"Wait! Hold on!" You stamp your foot, they stop their already imminent retreat. "Discuss this with me first! What are you two planning?!"

"We were just gonna go ask again!"
"And make the big puppy dog eyes!"

The what?

"You know!" Julie acts as if I must be some kind of rube to not know what those are, "Those big eyes you make, where you kind of groan, while frowning?"
"Yeah! Mom will do anything if you just do that!"

"Guys, this is a bit more complex than just 'puppy dog eyes'. This is a new pet, a new member of the household. Don't you see the problem here?"

"Nope!"
"Naw, puppy dog eyes for the puppy dog. Makes sense to me."

Oh, I've asked the wrong people, haven't I?

"Can you girls, uh, go discuss this plan further? Like, maybe in your room? You can practice making that puppy dog stare!"
"Oh, okay!"
"Good idea, Masami!"

They happily skip away, and I'm left feeling like I'm going to have a heart attack.
That was a close one.

I need to find someone else, and find someone else soon! Before they decide that it's time to come back and cause more havoc.
Oh! Mir and Emillion! One of you has to be mature!

Carefully, I tiptoe toward them. They're sitting on the couch-
Holding.
Hands?

"Um." Is the only thing I can say to this. "What are you doing?"
"Shh." Emillion keeps his hold on her hand. "We're trying to get Mir to appear fully."

Right now, she still has the same ghostly appearance that she normally does. It must be hard, being invisible.

"Oh! That sounds neat. How is it coming along so far?"

You can clearly see Mir hasn't improved much. Her transparent form only shows the slightest tint of opaqueness. I can see her clothes, and her skin. Her hair remains almost glowing in the afternoon light streaming through the window.

She could do a lot better than that.

"Not great." Emillion frowns.
"Can I help?"

"I don't see what you can do, but sure." He huffs, "Be my guest."

"(Just! Let me know what you're going to do first, okay?)" Mir pleads, her face flickering in and out of visibility.

Gently, I grab her hand, close my eyes, and concentrate.
Be visible.
Be visible.
Be visible.

"Woh!" Emillion jumps.
"What? What happened?!"
"No! No! Keep going!"

"Uh, okay!"

Be visible.
Be visible.
Be visi-
"(It's not working anymore)"
"Aww." Emillion pouts, "I could have swore we almost had it there."
"What happened?" I ask, confused.

"She like- was perfectly visible for a minute. It was like someone turned a light on."
"Oh!" I smile, "I didn't expect that to work! I just kept thinking 'be visible' and, I guess she was visible!"

"(Yeah but, it was only for a moment.)"

"Huh..."
"Let's get it out of the way, Masami." Emillion pouts, "What do you want?"

"Oh! I need some advice."
"Is it the dog thing?"
"How do you know about it?!"

"Julie and Haruko are telling everyone." He smiles at me, "You made a mistake expecting them to keep a secret."

Oh no! He's right!

That's when I spring forward, and grab Emillion's hand!

"What do I do, what do I do, WHAT DO I DO WHAT DO I DO WHAT-"
"Stop, STOP!" He shakes my shoulder, "This isn't going to solve anything!"

"(Seriously.)"

"Listen, Masami. Izum- Mom didn't say no, she just didn't say yes. She doesn't know what would be the best thing. She just thinks that Kaori isn't ready for a pet right now."
"So.. Can you help me talk to her? Maybe convince her that we are ready for a pet?!"

"It's not 'us', Masami. It's Kaori. It's her pet, she has to take care of it, and Izu- Mom seeing any of us taking care of it in her stead is going to make her think that Kaori is being lazy. It's a responsibility problem when our house is already so full."

Wow! Emillion is really wise!

"How do you know this?"
"Well, I've known Kaori a long time." Emillion sighs, "As Magician, she has a huge heart."

"Has she tried this sort of thing before?"
"Yeah, she tried to adopt you."

That stings, Emillion.

"I'm just kidding!" Emillion backs off when he notices the look on my face.

"Can you help me speak with Mom about this?"
"I can, but I don't know what good it's going to do."

"Just, please, humor me."

"It's about the dog, and-" I try to think of the right words to ask. "-and how to make Kaori happy."

"I'm glad you asked that, sit down, you two."

We sit at the dinner table, and Mom puts her head on her folded palms.
"I was just thinking of that."

"Right, we noticed that you didn't say 'no' earlier."
"Mmhmm." Mom smiles, "I did not."

"So, do we have enough space in our house for a dog?"
"Oh, it's not space I'm worried about." Mom seems uneasy. "It's that, if I let her have a pet, then everyone would be allowed a pet. Right? I can't support a whole house of cats, dogs, gerbils, or snakes or whatever."

"Well, what should we do then? I want Kaori to be happy!"

"About that, you see-"

Her smile disappears.
"I don't know what to do either!" Mom reaches forward and grabs my hands, "Masami! What do I do? What do I do what do I do what do I do what do I-"

"Wait! Stop!" I shake her hands, "Emillion, stop giggling."
"S-sorry, but you have to admit. This is kinda funny."

"I'm gonna go talk with Kaori, but what's your answer? Could she get one?"
"I don't know!" Mom seems worried, "What do I do?! If I say no, Kaori is gonna be sad, but if I say yes, then the house might fill up with pets! And I don't know how to take care of a dog!"

"Mom, relax." Emillion steps in, "We should just tell Kaori that if she's not going to be responsible, she can forget it."
"Can you?" Mom seems to be pleading with me now, "I'm in way over my head! Can you please try to talk to Kaori about it? I already feel like I made a mistake when she ran off."

"No no, YOU tell her that, and another thing Izu- Mom." Emillion sighs"You're gonna have to be a little more strict with us. We're not advisers, we're your children."

"But I don't know what I'm doing!" Mom pleads, "I don't know how this works, at all!"

"Moom, relax." I hold her much larger hand in my own, "I think you're fine, just the way you are."
"Oh, THANK YOU!"

With a jump, she reaches across the table and grabs me!
"Thank you, thank you! I'm so relieved to know that I'm doing a good job!"
"Mom! Really! You're fin-"

Emillion, don't even start laughing. I can make your life miserable.

"But really, I think-" I try to push Mom off of me, but she really has a good grip around my shoulders, "-I think that it's important to have Kaori in on this conversation as well! I mean, you're her mother, too!"

"T-t-t-then what can I do?"
I sigh, "Go to Kaori, and have this conversation with her! Tell her that you want to be a better mother, too."

"I- I-."

"Mom, here."

I stand up from the table, and take her hand.
"I'll go with you."

"What do we do about the dog, though?!"

"It doesn't 'just' have to be HER dog, Mom!" I try to calm her down, "Let's make a family pet, I'm sure everyone would be happy to have it!"

"I don't know, I just don't know."
"Mom, please, talk to Kaori."

With a huff, she stands up. I lead her by the hand to the stairway. Behind me, Emillion is giving me the thumbs up.

--

"Kaori?"
"Go away."

"Kaori, it's Mom."

There's some rustling inside, and the door slowly swings open.
"What is it." She says, flatly.
"Kaori, sweetie, can I come in?"

She huffs, and slowly steps inside. Mom follows closely behind.

"Do you think she can handle herself?"
"Who? Mom or Kaori?" Emillion asks.

"Either."
"It'll be fine, Masami." He pats my shoulder.

Suddenly, I hear a whail.
Then, crying.

Both of us are at the door in an instant. We slowly slide it open to reveal:
Mom, tightly hugging Kaori.

"Kaori, I'm sorry that I'm not a better mother."
"Y-you're fine, Mom, really. I don't think different of you for this."

There's an undeniable urge to just run forward and grasp both your sister, and your mother.
You feel so proud of them right now.

No! Wait, you shouldn't. This is something Mom has to do. She has to confront Kaori, and she can't have your help when doing so.

Slowly, just so neither of them notice, you close the door. Mom and Kaori remain clutching in the light of the afternoon sun.

"They'll be just fine." I whisper to Emillion. "Let's go start working on dinner. They might be a while."

--

Oh I hate this.
They don't ever teach you cooking in school! Why is this so hard?

"Are you okay, Masami?" Emillion makes a strange face in my direction. He effortlessly slices beef with ease, putting the cut steaks onto a cooking board.

"No! This is hard!"
"It's rice, Masami. Water, butter, cooker. Rice."
"There's just so much of it! And it's so hard to cut."

"Masami, you're not trying to CUT the rice, are you?"
"I have to! It hardened up into a brick!"
"Okay, okay. Stop. I'll handle that. You work on peeling carrots."

"Hrrghgm. Why does this have to be so hard? I wish there was like, something in school. Like a club, a cooking-"

The spoon in my hand falls to the table with a clatter. Both of my hands clasp into my hair.

"Hm?" Emillion notices this display. "What's wrong?"
"The cooking club! Oh no!"
"Wait, wait, back up."

I hop over to Emillion and shake him!
"I joined a club in school! It was a cooking club!"
"I hope you aren't paying for it." Emillion frowns.

"No! Worse than that! I joined it and then never went to any of the meetings! I completely forgot!" My hand continues to knead at my scalp.

"So? How many meetings did you miss?"

"Well, we were out of school a lot because of Fortune but.." I count on my fingers, "Four! I've missed four meetings!"
"Just start going, then. I doubt they even noticed you weren't there."

"But they'll notice if I suddenly start showing up!"
"Yeah, especially if you try to cook." Stop smirking, that isn't funny!

"Hey! what smells so good!?" Julie almost gravitates into the kitchen.
"It's dinner. We're having beef-fried rice stew."

"Oh! Can I-"
"No." Emillion pushes her away from the pot. "No tasting."
"Aww."

"Masami, we're ready to confront Mom now!" Haruko helpfully glides into the room behind Julie, "We got our faces down, perfectly!"
"It's fine, Haruko. Mom left with Kaori an hour ago to pick up the dog. They're gonna leave it at the vets overnight for an exam."

"Oh? How did you convince her? Mom or Kaori?"
"It's just her using Mom magic, they'll be fine." I give Haruko a pat on the head.

"Mom magic? How does that work?" Julie tries to reach for the pot, but is intercepted.
"I'm sure she'll show you someday."

"Okay, that's it, too many people. Everyone out." Emillion shoos the twins toward the door.

Then he turns to me, "You too, Masami."
"But-"
"No excuses, I'll finish everything here."

I pout, gradually returning to the dinner table.

"Oh? Did your cooking adventure go well?" Aiko rests her head on the ornately large table.
"Cheer up Masami! You'll get it next time!"
"Aren't you in the cooking club, Aiko? Why didn't you help?"
"Pfft, I didn't join THAT club." Aiko smiles, "They didn't give me a good enough deal."

"Aiko." Aina nudges her sister, "Are you STILL trying to hold clubs hostage until they give you things?"
"It works, doesn't it?"

"Oh, when's Ryouta and Maeda getting here?" I take out my phone, "I texted them an hour ago."
"They're still on the way, they got distracted by club stuff." Aina massages her sister's shoulders.

"Is anyone else coming?" Julie sits down at the table.
"Just our family, not sure about the adults."

The door bursts open, and I'm met with an answer to one of those questions.
"Hey girls, what's going on." Alex comes in.
close behind him, is Ken'ichi.

"Hey, I heard from Ryouta you were having a big dinner tonight, so I thought I could let Ken-"
"It's fine. You know that." I interrupt him. "Come in Ken, get a chair."

"Heh, thanks."
"Wait."

He stops at the doorway.

"No smoking."
He gives me an evil eye, but gladly takes his cigarette and snuffs it out in a small canister he keeps in his pocket.

They approach the table, and take a seat. Immediately, the twins start happily chatting at them.
I say 'at them', because it's clear they aren't listening at all.

"Uh huh."
"That's nice."
"Mm."

Oh! There's Ryouta and Maeda! They're outside on the sidewalk, seemingly talking about something.

I open the door and wave to them, and they wave back. Slowly, they start to approach the house.

"Hey Masami!" Ryouta gives me a solid hug, "Haven't seen you for a while!"
"Hi Masami." Maeda hands over a small box. "We stopped by the bakery."

"Oh? What did you get?"

I tear open the tiny strips of tape on both flaps of the box and open it. Inside, lots of little blue cupcakes adorn the interior.

"Oh, Cupcakes."

I hand it back to Maeda.
"Put it on the table, don't want to ruin my dinner."

She steps out of speaking distance, engaging Aiko in conversation. Which is my cue to breathe a small sigh of relief.

The door gently opens, and the main attraction step through!

"Hi guys!" Kaori skips through the door, a smile beaming on her face.

"Sis, Did-"
Before I can even respond, she grabs onto me and does a full spinning hug!
My one weakness!

"Ugh, um, Sis! Did it go well?"
"Yup!" Kaori rocks back and forth with me in her arms. "Doctor said the pup had a few things wrong, but nothing they couldn't fix! She'll be home by tomorrow!"

"That's so good to-"
"Thank you." Kaori whispers in my hear, giving me a quick peck on the cheek.

"Uh, glad you're happy." I say, dumbfounded. She darts off toward the dinner table, and quickly joins in the chatter.

The noise grows louder as more of my siblings enter. First is Mir, then Emillion's sister Amarante, Jess (That's a lame name, Secretary, you could do better), and finally Cirrus!

Well, Cirrus was here the whole time. She was just hanging over the dinner table like a spectre, hiding in the shadows of the room.
I need to tell her not to do that. It really creeps people out.

"Is Emillion ready?"
"Just about!" I hear from the kitchen.

We take our seats at the table, and everyone explodes with chatter and conversation.

It's amazing to think how Mom and I, starting with just each other, now have all this. This family, and these friends.
I hope it never ends.

Something, strange, catches my eye.

Oh, it's a toothpick in the cupcakes. The box is sitting on the table.

Well, I know they're scary, but- I suppose one wouldn't hurt. Probably wouldn't spoil my dinner, either.
While Mom isn't looking, my hand reaches inside the box, and pulls out the blue one.

I nervously check behind me, and then peel the covering off. Then, I take a bite into it.
..

You know, this isn't too bad. Tastes pretty sweet!
I wonder what the big fuss was about? I forgot already.

>You know, this isn't too bad. Tastes pretty sweet!

What a nice callback

Thank you so much for running for all this time all the way through and beyond, Heart.

I feel like the skip to the dinner and everyone showing up was a bit fast, but on the whole I really liked this!

I think we're in a good place to leave Masami for now.

Thanks for the thread everyone.
Thanks for the quest everyone.
Thanks for every person who participated, past and present. I couldn't have done it without you.

It's amazing that such a silly magical girl quest I made in my spare time has turned into this.

I know most of you aren't awake right now. This went on longer than I expected.
At the same time, I'm very grateful to both the people who helped make this happen, and anyone who may be reading this in the archives.

Is this the last CPM thread? Probably not. I'll likely revisit the idea as more epilogues in the future.

Or maybe even a new storyline! I have several ideas already.

Needless to say: I don't think this is the last we'll be seeing of Masami.

Thanks to everyone who participated. Please let me know what you thought of all of it. The thread, the quest. I appreciate feedback!

It might help with the next project I'm thinking of running!

Until next time, keep up with me on twitter. https://twitter.com/qm_cardheart

I'll be around to answer questions for a few.

It's strange to think: This may be the only personal project that I've completed fully. I'm happy to have made it happen.

It was, I'm wearing down and I could feel it.

I would have liked to have personal introductions for everyone as a kind of cast-call. But we're a few hours too late for my eyes to stand another 3+ posts.

I think she's fine where she is right now. at least for a little while.

Oh, and here's some extra: A little art I commissioned a while back that I don't think I ever used for Julie.

And here's Larro's titlecard again. I'm not sure if anyone ever noticed the tiny Asai on the monster's shoulder.

Unfortunately I don't really feel like I'm in a good place to really give feedback. Like I saw this quest a couple times and thought about joining but I don't know, I think it was at a time when the players weren't really talking much so that kind of made me lost interest. And now I kind of feel bad for only really jumping in towards the end.

Don't feel that way, contribution was appreciated all the same I'm sure. And it is true the quest dragged itself a bit towards the end, mostly due to scenes being a bit too long, irregular update speed and the plot moving at glacial pacing, certainly things to work on.

I'm not quite sure even why it came this way, given at the beginning the pacing was completly fine.
>>
Also, little things that I'm not sure anyone noticed.

I named the boys in this quest after fighting game characters. Ryo-uta, Ken-ichi, Alex.

I had an entire arc planned for the clubs which never went anywhere. I wanted them to become an integral part of the finding-and-hunting of magic cards. That was kind of dropped along with the cooking club.

There was a time when Mom could have totally got the Principal on the rebound.

I planned to have way more characters that covered both major and minor arcana. I'm kind of glad I didn't.

That's fine! Any participation is welcome. Even if you never really got into it, I'm glad to simply have had you around.

The writing was more for me than anyone else. I'm just glad I made something that was fun to read.

Thanks for running.

This quest has been very pleasant, so I am glad it remained active all this time.

Catch you later, and good night.

Thanks for staying with me for so long! I know it was kind of frustrating at the beginning when I was still trying to learn what this 'pacing' thing was.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it!

With that, I am going to sleep.

Everyone, thank you again for the ride. I look forward to many more in the future.
