"Ashes to Ashes, Blood to Blood." - The oath of the Dragon's Blood Covenant, who purify the weaknesses of the flesh and spirit through religious observation, guided meditation and partaking of the pyre dragon's ashen blood to become a vessel for its strength, piety and righteousness.

"Always towards the dawn." - The oath of the Dawnbreakers, who go out into the accursed endless night to bring death to the deathless fiends that lurk in the eternal dark, ever vigilant that someday they and those they protect will stand beneath the sun once more.

"We must be the angels." - The motto of the city guard of a theocracy's capital. As the people of their city pray for peace and safe journeys every day, the guard acts to see that their prayers are answered.

"We're never far." - The motto of the Brave Legion, a remnant of the age of earthbound gods, world-ending monsters and legendary heroes. Recognizing that they could not stand against all the world's evil themselves, they strove to make the journeys of other heroes easier, mostly by maintaining forts along the road, keeping base camps and aiding their charges against wandering monsters. Today, they offer their services to any travelers in need to aid on their journeys, to ensure that no one's journey must be made alone.

Like 99% of these are uninspired shit.
>>
>>47169279
Where'd you come up with that number?

99% seems off.
>>
>>47169325
On further review, there are 38 quotes in this thread, give or take one.

If 99% of them are uninspired, that means that only 0.38 of the quotes in this thread are, in fact, inspired.

So which 0.38 is it, if I may ask?
>>
>>47160999
"Hold your praise. I'm no hero, I just do my job. You as well might have called me villain if somebody else hired me."
>>
>>47169356
Actually though, how do you measure the 0.38, when you consider it?

I mean, not all the quotes are the same length, do you just abstract each quote as 1, and then divide the quote by that with it's own self contained length? Or should you consider the length in a more objective sense, with longer quotes being worth more than 1?

Then we need to establish a baseline quote length, however, a meter for the measurement of quotes. So which do we use in the gathered data? Should we just take every quote and then make the baseline the one closest to the average length? However, then you're creating issues of following quotes: What if our quote sample isn't average? It throws the entire measurement out of wack.

Maybe we decide based on the highest quality quote present? It seems like that would be a good way of determining out "1", but then we come back to the issue of 99% of the quotes in this thread being unworthy of the title.

Hold on, I'm going to have to think about this.

The Candle Knights
>>
>>47169435
Oh, I forgot to say, the issues with abstraction is that some quotes simply can't translate very well because of it.

Take, for example, >>47167538

It provides the quote "Die well." Including the period, that quote is 8 characters long, so 1% of it would be 0.08 of the quote. Does that mean you might possibly find, say, 60% of the lowercase e to be inspiring? How do you evaluate that, however? Like, do you find 60 of the e(or any other letter, for that matter) inspiring by itself(in which case then more than 0.38 of the quotes in this thread are inspiring!) or does it require context of the other letters around it(in which case you're requiring more than 1% of the quote to be inspired!).

No, abstraction doesn't work.

In the setting I'm working on, a historical figure remembered only as the Conquering King marched across the land, leading his army in defiance of the gods, destroying chapels and breaking religious icons in his wake. Eventually, he found a forgotten region of the land, teeming with demons and other evil creatures on the verge of invasion. Leaving behind a rearguard to ensure the safety of his lands, he marched his most loyal men into the despoiled land to pre-emptively strike the wickedness within. None returned from that venture, but in his legacy, the rearguard established a series of fortresses to contain the cursed realm.

It's said that on the eve of his last march, the King's advisors urged him to reconsider, saying that each step into that land could mean his death.

All that he responded with was, "Then I shall take longer strides."

The words "Longer strides" are often quoted by modern knights, warriors and even citizens before delving into a risky situation, invoking the courage and determination of the much-reviled king.

>>
this isn't mine i'm just paraphrasing it and changing it slightly to fit, but i loved this speech.

In the ancient war the gods, the elves, the orcs, and all the other races fought and we fought among them and survived! Why is it that this whole continent was once ruled by humans?

Is it because we are a race that specializes in violence? We can't use magic like the Aisimar or Teiflings, nor are we physically strong like the Orcs, and we do not have the longevity of the Elves. Why were we able to rule the continent? Is it because we were masters of war?

I tell you it was not!

We fought and survived, because we are weak! The strong polish their fangs while the weak polish their wits.We are the weak, just as we have always been. Indeed, nothing has changed at all. Why do we bow our heads?

I say again WE ARE THE WEAK! We are the proud weak, who have throughout history torn out the throats of those who sit back and boast of their strength! We will live as the weak, fight as the weak, and as the weak we will destroy the strong! Accept the fact that we are the weakest race, the ones that can become anything, because we were born with nothing. you have suffered enough, no longer, this day we declare war on the strong!

When all is said and done, there is still much to do.

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

"Here lies a hero."

Written on a small rough tombstone in the middle of nowhere, the resting place of the greatest man in history.
>>
"Honor the dead, Protect the living"
-Lead Badge Hunters, who are tasked with killing the undead and necromancers

" Broken Graves,Unbroken Wills"
- Order of the Silent Sepulchre, the Lead Badge's military allies

"Dead is Dead/Death to the Deathless!" - informal battle cry of both

"Of course, as someone who fancies herself a warrior, I am jelaous of you."
Said an Archdemon to a human.
"You get stronger by fighting, struggling against odds and learning. With each swing of your sword, you're getting further out of my reach. While I am like a disgusting tick, I can only grow by leeching off things greater than me. So I say it again, I am jelaous. Now go and swing a bit more, there are still things left to surpass."

Fucking loved that movie when I was little, especially that last part with Braighe. Whole movie he's silent, almost mindless. We know dragons can talk but he doesn't until his last scene where he roars into battle beats almost the entire group effortlessly.

To bad for him Sir Smythe was taught to fight dragons by dragons.

"Comrade, I did not want to kill you...But you were only an idea to me before, an abstraction that lived in my mind and called forth its appropriate response...I thought of your hand-grenades, of your bayonet, of your rifle; now I see your wife and your face and our fellowship. Forgive me, comrade. We always see it too late. Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony-Forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?" - Paul Baumer, after killing a French soldier.
