You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

"Oh... oh my." Natalia's eyes widen as she reads over the manifest that your client has sent over, as thanks for securing a sample of the alien crop they wanted so badly. "You certainly weren't kidding when they said they would compensate us handsomely for our troubles."

"I know, right?" You grin. "So, you're the doctor. What do you think will help us the most?'

"Hmmm, well... they're ALL so tempting..." Natalia beams. "But... I've narrowed it down to three choices. I'll leave the final discretion to you, Captain."

She then hands the datapad back to you and you can see the selections that she's highlighted.

EXOTIC MATERIAL STORAGE: A specialized module for the medlab that adds a highly secure vault for the storage of highly volatile, infectious, or otherwise dangerous exotic materials. The ability to safely store exotic materials may allow the construction of special upgrades or gear in the future.

STIMPACK: With the addition of a special license, the ship's onboard medical dispenser can now manufacture highly regulated stimulants for general use. Stimpacks can be integrated into existing Accord power armor for boosted but temporary performance. Side effects may vary.

BIOWARFARE SUITE: A specialized addition to the existing medical dispenser will allow it to manufacture a wide range of biological and chemical toxins for use in combat, both on a personal level and in ship to ship engagements.

The biowarfare suite sounds tempting, but the ability to commit warcrimes often has huge disadvantages in the long run since it invites disproportionate retribution and encourages abandonment by superiors in case said retribution occurs.

"Hmmmm, the Exotic Material Storage looks to be a good investment." You say, making your choice. "Who knows what interesting shit we'll find out there i the unknown."

"Indeed." Natalia puts her hands to her cheeks. "Just think of all of the undiscovered toxins and poisons and microbes waiting to be found and weaponized! The possibilities are endless!"

"Yeah..." You narrow your eyes suspiciously at your easily excited doctor. "It can be used to hold OTHER things too, like rare minerals or volatile substances or corrosive organic matter."

"Even better!" Natalia giggles.

You head down to the Engineering section, where your chief engineer Scott should be. You just realized that you haven't actually seen him in quite a while. Probably too distracted by his most current project.

That kind of gives you a devious idea. Maybe you can go in and try to see what little project he's been working so aggressively on?

Unfortunately, before you can even start, you bump head first into one of Scott's sentry bots, its blank head staring down at you. Yeah, you probably should have figured Scott would have had security of some kind posted here.

"DO YOU REQUIRE ASSISTANCE, CAPTAIN?{ The sentry bot queries you.

Oh, right, you're the goddamn captain of this ship. Of course the bots would be subservient to you!

"Take me to Scott!" You instruct it.

"AFFIRMATIVE." The sentry bot gives a programmed but respectful salute, spins around, and marches down the hall. You follow it closely as it leads you into Scott's workshop. A security scanner beeps, and detecting the bot, immediately unlocks the door and it slides open...

...to show Scott working on a partially complete robot which seemed to have a very thin and lithe frame...

"C-captain!?" Scott nearly leaps high enough to hit his head on the ceiling when he turns to see who's entering.

But your eyes are still drawn to his project.

"W-what?" Scott blinks before taking a step back. "N-no! It's nothing like that!"

"Uh huh, so what else could you possibly be building a robot with a feminine frame for?" You point out.

"There's perfectly practical reasons for it!" Scott tries to explain, his brow sweating furiously now. "I mean, they can fit in tighter spaces than full size combat bots, and would make more difficult targets to hit..."

"You can just make the existing robots a bit smaller. Basically just scale them down." You counter.

"And... and... there's possible infiltration applications!" Scott continues, still horribly nervous.

Eeeeh, you'll let him off for now. You've already learned enough for now.

"All right, I'll take your word for it." You say with a feigned dismissive tone. "As long as it doesn't blow up the ship or anything."

"I-It won't!" Scott stammers.

"Anyways, what's the progress report on our bots?" You ask him. Between the last couple of missions, they certain been doing a lot of work.

"Well, apart from the ones that get blown up or shot, they're still doing fairly well." Scott frowns. "But they're still basically just the stock models. I'd love to have the opportunity to start tinkering with them, but they run on a lot of proprietary tech that's strictly controlled by their manufacturers. I mean, I could try bypassing the security features, but who knows if that'll work..."

"Can't you just ask them?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, I did, but I don't think an intergalactic robots company is going to listen to a random engineer stationed on a frontier ship." Scott points out. "Not unless I, or you, do something to really grab their attention."

Oh boy, this was going to be so great. You get sweet revenge on Amy, Elsa, and Lida, AND Scott get to spend some quality time with the opposite sex! Everybody wins!

And people wonder why you got made Captain at such young age.

You head back over to the armory to check on how Tank is doing. As expected, you can see him rigorously scrubbing away the armor you had worn on the infiltration mission. No doubt he wanted it spotless by the time you used it again.

"Hey, Tank." You smile as you enter the armory. "How are things?"

Tank straightens up and salutes at your arrival. He was still wearing his regular armor, and you wondered if he had actually cleaned his, yet. Judging from how loyal he was to you, he probably hasn't yet, if he's still working on yours.

"So why are you acting so nervous around me all of a sudden?" You ask. You're curious, since it looks like he's been kind of standoffish for the past couple days or so.

Tank just quickly shrugs off the answer by simply shrugging before trying to return to his work. Guess he REALLY was in no mood to talk about it.

Eh, you decide you can always ask him another time. No sense pressing him unnecessarily. Despite all the armor, Tank was still quite the softie on the inside.

"All right, I'll leave you be for now." You smile at Tank. "Just remember to take care of your own armor too, okay? I don't want you smelling funny the next time I see you."

Tank nods and salutes.

You then exit the armory and head back to the bridge. It was time to get moving. You had Elizabeth pulling in every report, rumor, and shred of information that she could about Carly's movements. Hopefully she'd be able to come up with something.

"Captain on deck!" Bradford barks as you arrive and take a seat on your signature chair. Your bridge crew stands to attention and salutes you in response before returning to their duties.

"Good to see you back safe, Captain." Bradford says with relief. "I was rather shocked that you were able to get in and out of that facility without being detected, especially with Tank tagging along."

"It was all skill!" You chuckle. It kinda was, honestly. The Confeds having HORRIBLE security was also a factor, but you didn't need to tell Bradford that!

"Anyways, the Gullinbursti is prepped and ready to go." Bradford continues. "All we need is a heading."

"Elizabeth, you have any leads?" You ask your resident spy.

"Hm, well..." Elizabeth frowns as she goes through her datapad. "Pirates aren't exactly the easiest people to find to begin with, or otherwise pirates wouldn't be such a problem In addition, Confederate datalinks are TERRIBLE. Practically no universal communication protocol or centralized database, so their records are all over the damn place. So sloppy. So damn sloppy. Do you know that they don't even have their own dedicated central intelligence service? Ever individual planet has its own local variant! Insanity."

"Elizabeth. Focus." You say coolly.

"Right, right." Elizabeth takes a deep breath to calm herself down. "All right, I dont have anything concrete yet, but I have a few possible leads."

"Go on."

"Well, first, there's the Graveyard." Elizabeth points to what looks to be a large nebula on the holomap. Except on closer inspection... it wasn't a nebula. Or a natural one, anyways.

"It's ships." You blink.

"Shipwrecks, to be more precise." Elizabeth corrects you. "Some kind of gravitational anomaly had drawn in wrecked ships from all over the sector into this one central location. It's a literal goldmine for salvagers and shipbreakers. And a natural hiding place for pirates."

"Promising." You nod. "Any others?"

"There's the world of Omai. It's a Confederate mining world that's high in mineral content, particularly rare metals like gold and silver. It's been a constant target for pirate attacks for obvious reasons, though there are rumors of one or a few particularly bold pirates who don't hit the cargo convoys, but the actual mines on the surface."

"Sounds like something Carly would do." You agree.

"And finally, there's the typical baiting operation." Elizabeth concludes. "You know the drill. Pirates broadcast a distress beacon and then ambush whoever comes to investigate. It's apparently very common in this sector, due to the Confederate's poor system tracking."

"Nah, the higher ups don't need to know about this yet." You shake your head. "Let's make the jump."

"All right, jumping in fifteen!" Amy cracks her knuckles as she warms up Gullinbursti's FTL drives. "Let's go!"

You feel the slight pull of acceleration as Gullinbursti warps to the Graveyard, which is rather close. Once the initial flash of extradimensional light fades away as Gullinbursti slows down to physical speeds now, you get a better look of your destination.

Up ahead, you could see hundreds, thousands, no, countless derelict ship hulls floating in the middle of space, like an artificial asteroid belt. Ships of all kinds, from all three factions and even from places that predated the three superpower blocs could be spotted floating in the void.

"Where did all these hulls come from?" Amy gasps.

"Looks like some kind of major battle..." Elsa's eyes shined.

"Couldn't be one single battle." Lida said quietly. "The ships are spread over too many time periods."

"You know, there's rumors that there are ships in there that predate humanity itself." Elizabeth says with a smile. "Alien in origin."

"Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised." You mumble as you stare at the endless sea of floating metal. "But finding it would be like finding a hay in a very, VERY large needle stack."

"Doesn't stop people from trying." Bradford points out the viewscreen, and your tactical display highlights what looks to be a large space station carved into the side of the remains of a truly massive space hulk. You figure it was one of the early colony ships, though how it got here, and what happened to the colonists on it, were probably questions better left unknown.

"Is that what i think it is?" You ask.

"Junktion Point." Bradford confirms. "Basically the home port of the various salvage and shipbreaker crews that frequent this area."

"Maybe we should dock there and ask around?" Elsa suggests. "These guys probably know the area the best, besides the pirates."

"Well, even though this is technically unclaimed space, the Confederates consider the Graveyard within their de facto borders." Elizabeth warns. "If an Accord ship suddenly shows up at Junktion Point, that may alert the Confederates to our presence..."

"We'll handle this on our own." You say. While it would be nice to ask the locals for help, it was too much of a risk to assume there wouldn't be Confederate sympathizers among them, especially when in such close proximity to their territory.

"Understood." Amy nods. "So uh, how do we handle this?" She asks.

"Well, let's see." You check the sensor scans. Hugging the fringes of the Graveyard was definitely the safer alternative. The debris was not as thick, and you'd be able to cruise along rather safely. However, you wouldn't be able to get good sensor readers of the interior of the Graveyard, and there was always the chance of being spotted, either by a salvager or a pirate.

Maybe you just had to bite down and fly into the heart of the Graveyard? Given how dense the wreckage got in the center, it was almost suicide to venture in that deep. Then again, that would be the perfect place for pirates to hide from military authorities...

"Amy, make course for the center of the Graveyard." You say resolutely. "If we're going to find anything here, it's going to be in there."

"Are... are you sure?" Amy gulps. "The debris in there is awfully thick..."

"We've got shields, right?" You blink.

"Yeah, well, shields build up flux, and at some point we're gonna have to vent it." Amy points out. "And Lida, won't that make us highly detectable?"

"Like a flare in a dark room." Lida nods. "Flux vents give off a very distinguishable energy signature."

"Well, don't we have that fancy self repairing hull?" Elsa shrugs. "That should help us out."

"Leave the shield off for now." You instruct.

"G-got it." Amy bites her lip.

"What, not confident in your flying skills for once?" You chide your helmswoman.

"Oh, I'm plenty confident in my flying skill." Amy laughs nervously. "What I'm not so confident in is this ship's ability to tank a dreadnought sized piece of debris."

"Just keep a sharp eye out and everything will be okay." You try to assure her.

"Oh yeah, because you're not the one flying the ship." Amy groans.

"Nope, I'm saying that as one of the people riding in said ship." You respond.

"...point." Amy concedes and throttles up slowly and carefully. Gullinbursti responds to her commands and slowly pushes deeper into the Graveyard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8owXHUK-C9E

And as the ship pushes its way through the endless field of dead ships, you just can't shake the eerie feeling that you're being watched. As if the crew of the derelict and lost ships were still there, observing from whatever dark nether realm they were inhabiting now.

Gullinbursti rumbles as a piece of debris floats in and ricochets gently off of the hull. Your tactical display continually whines as the hull is assailed by an endless storm of micrometeorites and debris. They weren't causing any serious damage, but the ship's sensors logged each impact regardless.

"Lida, you see anything?" You ask your sensor officer.

"Nothing yet. No anomalous power sources or unnatural movement." Lida frowns. "Wait... I think I'm picking something up. A signal. A faint one."

"A signal?" You blink. "What kind?"

"A distress signal, Captain." Lida looks right at you. "About a few hundred kilometers from our position, in that large derelict battlecruiser."

You glance in the direction your tactical display was pointing at, and indeed, you see the signal was emanating from an old Hegemony Conqueror-class Cruiser.

"It's probably a trap." Elsa grunts.

"Either way, it's not our concern." Elizabeth shrugs.

"Either way, we can't just leave somebody out there." Bradford growls.

"We'll just have to quietly investigate." You say. "We can't afford to broadcast messages willy nilly."

"Understood." Lida says as she returns to her game.

"How do we investigate?" Bradford asks. "We could probably send a squad of recon bots over, though I suppose Tank would jump at the chance at something to do."

Bare minimum I'd think we have is the name,"Gullinbursti", emblazoned in fancy handwriting on the sides of the ship.

We'd probably get a custom paintjob if we get really famous or become an elite.

If someone has that drawing of Sam riding a boar that'd work.

We might need to cut and run.

Given the covert nature of our operations, any distinguishing feature is bad. That said, I am partial to distinctive paint job, like CV-16 Lexington's Blue Ghost scheme or dazzle camouflage.

Could be the Gullinbursti has nanopaint or something, just press a button and it could go from plain grey to a cool paintjob and the symbol on the sides

Is it me, or did we just join a game of Space Hulk?

Hmm, maybe. Otherwise, the Captain's Gig might also do. After all, the Captain should have a pimped-out ride.

CAPTCHA was boats. . .

Too bad real aircraft carriers landed their gigs in 2008.

"Let's start off with a few drones." You say. "To stay on the safe side."

"Understood, Captain." Bradford nods. "I'll let Tank know."

It takes a few minutes for the shuttle to launch, and you watch intently as it slowly weaves its way through the debris field towards the derelict cruiser. Thankfully, the remotely piloted shuttle doesn't ram into any of the debris, and it safely clamps onto the hull of the cruiser and the squad of drones stored on board begin to disembark.

"Activating trackers." Lida says as she hits a button, and a dozen screens taken from the drones' visual feeds wink on on your tactical display. "Drones beginning search pattern."

On a rough overlay of the cruiser's layout, you watch as the little dots signifying the drones begin to split up and comb the ship.

"No atmosphere, as expected." Lida says coolly. "Whoever sent that beacon either was recently stranded or they've already been gone for a while."

"Odd." You frown, and then you pause as one of the screens winks out. "Hey, what happened to Drone Four?"

"Signal lost." Lida frowns. "I'm routing Drone Six to investigate."

The bridge is quiet as Drone Six reroutes, its feed showing empty steel corridors until it rounds a corner. And there, pinned to the deck is the remains of Drone Four, its chest cavity already pried open and a pair of gloved hands pulling out its internal components.

Drone Six, set on passive mode, only watches as a masked face looks up at it, caught in the act. The scavenger was dressed in a ragged environment suit, arms full of salvaged electronic components and mechanical parts.

"Looks like we found our person in distress." Bradford says dryly.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week! And don't forget KanColle on Friday!
