ITT we talk about Glersee>What is Glersee? Its an ad-hoc language with no grammatical rules used to mark trails with symbols or runes to communicate a message without language barriers. Normally used with chalk, knife marks, or paint. We talk about what we could use this in our adventures, ideas for new runes, or post runes you have seen before and find interesting.

>>47345942No, I think OP's posting this from a specific thing, but I think he's trying to just start a thread about the use of symbols as a "hidden language" kind of thing.
I find "Kind woman, tell sad story" especially amusing.

Thanks for the signs, mates. Gonna use them in my campaign.
>>47346229I may do the same, actually. Use them as Thieve's guild symbols, or use them to mark dungeons.
>>47345774>This place is not real>Must be lost to find the way>They will not hurt youThis seems like something creepy and freaking cool! I figure something like a forgotten realm would use this for outside travelers.
These are pretty nice. I may wind up using these as either dungeon delver field signs or for my not-witchers

>>47345774>>47345972So both of these come from SCP?, Has that game changed much ocer the years?I never really played it but it suddenly looks appealing if it makes use of hobo language. I like games were you are supposed to be attentive and watch out for little details.
>>47348639They pertain to the SCP universe rather then the game.Look up SCP Foundation. Some of the stories are tight as hell.

>>47349048Agreed. At one point I was interested in writing an add-on for the Nemesis ORE system that involved playing as either a Mobile Task Force or the staff and management of one of the SCP sites, but there's such a substantial tone shift between some of the material that I'd have to do several versions.Oh well, maybe after I'm done with assessment for this semester.
>>47347800>Show players the symbols without a key>They mark them down for future reference>>Trust them>>They will not hurt you>Give them the key>>Symbols have been compromisedGod, I love it.You can go for the short "oh shit" like the greentext, or for a more drawn out reveal with stuff like "keep true self hidden".Also, symbols being scratched out. A scratched out "safe place to rest" is disturbing, but what do you do when you see a scratched out "stay in the light"?

You know, an interesting idea just hit me.What if you had a PC who was a diviner and then they asked for guidance of some sort? You could have them do some check to find runes randomly someplace that maybe only they can see and if they can dicpher it's meaning they can get an answer (vague or otherwise) from it.
Thanks OP. Been looking for ideas for things like this.
>>47349511Or how about a campaign where the PC's each only know part of the code, and everyone has their own task?Like, if PC #1 is trying to find his captain, and PC #2 is trying to defect to somebody else:>#1: Hey I only know "help comes",what are the other signs?>#2: It's 'stay together, help comes, safe place to rest'>Actual signs: 'Marked for Raid, help comes, bring offering'

>>47345972>do not be taken alive
I've always wanted to run a game that made heavy usage of a pictoral language like this. Like, the players have to utilize an old gas station roadmap covered in cryptic symbols to find their way around the setting.
Icon language like this is a big part of the game we're playing, since there isn't a common language and most people can't read. We and the DM make use of note cards to show what icons we make or see.My favorite one so far is "Plants ahead", a flower with a skull for a head.

Looking over this thread again, I almost want to tie this in with themes of childhood and summertime as well as the supernatural. The kids leave symbols and little songs behind like these to teach those who come after them the secrets.

These sign things are great, I think I might insert them into my next campaign. Specifically, a magic item a rogue wouldstart with (campaign's gimmick I've got planned is that everyone starts with a unique magical item in an otherwise low magic setting). The item (still haven't decided what it would be) is possessed by a demon or some such that knows a whole lot, and can advise the player using signs similar to those in the thread. Of course, being a demon there will be some secret motive, one of them being that the rogue should not tell others of it.What kind of symbols should the demon have access to? Keeping in mind I want to leave room for interpretation and have the meanings be fairly broad, while still being able to do stuff like telling the player who to trust and not to tell others about itself. Also might make it able to give him some thieving advice, making the player fairly well known for what is perceived as great thieving instinct/luck (e.g., 'somehow' knowing what doors are unlocked).
>>47385534How about symbols that let the character read alignments, emotions and innermost desires? The item could be something like a demon-powered mood ring or magic 8-ball that could help the roguish owner and the rest of their party pick targets and gather vague and potentially inaccurate information.
>>47353103Different anon, but I've never seen loligarbage in SCP, but I've been out of the loop for a few years.
>>47384655>>47385393Well, the players in the campaign are looking for a photojournalist from their hometown that up and disappeared suddenly. People began to lose hope that they'd ever find him until his wife gets his journal full of pictures in the mail, along with three old trinkets (which are magic). So now the team is using the journal and travelling towards the towns seen in the photos in order to find his last known whereabouts. What they're just starting to know is that every town they visit is either tun by or inhabited by cultists that are using the people there for their rituals to obtain these higher states of being.
Have another symbolic bump.
>>47386146That sounds pretty good to me.

>>47362403>>47361295Don't forget a symbol for aluminum! It can be used for (admittedly weak) rockets:http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/enginelist.php#id--Chemical--Hybrid_Rocket--Aluminum-Oxygen

>>47395401I fucking love hobos, man. Modern day bridge trolls
>>47384229I'm guessing that symbol is "hostile entity in the heads of people". Either bugs in the brain or demons possessing people. Here's four more separate ones for others to puzzle over.

>>47401699>I'm guessing that symbol is "hostile entity in the heads of people".Exactly right.
>>47401699Eye with the A in it is "people are literate/people in area know the signs"
>>47346198>>47347800All the enemy has to learn is the "compromised" symbol, and tada, they can now compromise anything you write. It's safer to let knowledge of compromise spread by mouth.
I drew these symbols ages ago for another work, they seem to fit with the Hobonics here. I'll look for a larger version I think I drew.
>>47358863>>47345972>>47346198What's the Sucker symbol meant to be, a baby's dummy?I love the hypocrisy in having both that and the Dishones man symbol. No wonder these people are homeless.
>>47406140Forgot the image, but then I found the expanded set so oh well. The large symbols are meant to be reworkings of the smaller ones, but can be reinterpreted as others.
>>47406212When you're talking about hobos, its my understanding that many of them have been homeless by choice. Plus, it's not like there was ever any council of hobos that all got together and decided on these symbols together. Judging them categorically based on a handful of symbols in a system that was clearly imperfectly accrued over time doesn't seem very reasonable. It's also worth mentioning that these symbols could be used in tandem: for example, an easy mark could be the same person as a dishonest man, as many cons actually depended on exploiting their mark's dishonesty or greed: the violin scam, for example. The 'sucker' symbol's slight resemblance to the 'dishonest man' symbol could be relevant.
>>47406479Pointing out that some Hobos choose to be homeless is pretty much the opposite of countering my point.Fortunately I'm not judging all hobos, nor is my comment based on a handful of symbols. We've seen three variations of that set of symbols alone in this thread. It's clearly not a new and unpopular lexicon, and all of them have the same symbols for "easy mark lives here, decieve them" and "beware of a decieve living here". The conclusion isn't some far reach from this.Of course they could be used in tandem, but that isn't evidence of anything. You're going to have to show how the symbols resemble each other.
>>47406593If your point was "It's no wonder these people are homeless," then my point was "no shit, they decided to be." If your point was "hobos are awful people, who deserve to be homeless" then yeah, I guess you could use that as evidence.>We've seen three variations of that set of symbols alone in this thread. It's worth mentioning that one of the symbols you quoted in that reply was actually a set of SCP symbols, not actual hobocode, and to nitpick a little more these all seem to be from the same set of symbols, just presented in different images. Actually, I can only find the dishonest man/easy mark pair on one of those images.>You're going to have to show how the symbols resemble each otherIn retrospect, the resemblance really isn't as close as I was thinking. I was working from the idea that both shared a kind of bar-crossbar construction, like this|--but it's not really that evident in the "dishonest man" mark, unless you think of the curved line as being added to the left of that first bit. I was thinking there could be something there, in that an "easy mark" is easy to deceive, and a "dishonest man" is prone to deceiving, and that if they resembled each other it could be an actual matter of symbology: these marks have similar meanings, and so resemble each other. Compare that to how the symbols for "judge" and "courthouse" both share the "judge" mark and you can see that that happens sometimes with other symbols. I'm not as confident now about the resemblance between those first two marks, though.
>>47406737If your point was "no shit, they decided to be", then my point was "great, we are in agreement". If you think my point was "hobos are awful people", then you're not being rational. If you think my point was "hobos deserve to be homeless", you're exaggerating slightly but mostly correct. If you think those two statements are the same, that's a big issue that would take more than a 4chan conversation to correct. My bad, I followed the wrong link. This doesn't contest that there are three individual images of those symbols. While they may be reporting one source, if we are to take them for granted as we have in the thread then it's consistent to analyse them as-is in the thread. If we can dismiss these as potentially just one of many hobo scripts, with no greater prominence or weight among the whole, it undermines pretty all of this thread's activity, in which case why are we here? Nevermind that this set of runes is more likely to be prominent (widely-used, long-lasting etc,) than not, given three different images from three differing sources reporting on it. This is very basic odds. You're right that those two symbols are in only two of those sets, I miscounted. All three have the connected "manipulate this kind women" rune, so the spirit is alive in all.I see your thoughts exact on the concept of a connection between the appearance of the symbols - there are several pairs like that in the sets already, like the in/out signs - but it's a stretch given what we can see.
>>47406226I have no clue what's going on here
>>47401699>they look almost human>the hostiles look almost human>hostile may suddenly be in the middle of humans>hostile entity may attack if you read things here
>>47402767>>47403449>>47416950Almost all correct. The broken circle was intended to be "insane" people and hostile insane people with the X in it.Hostile entities hidden among the population is the third one.The last was supposed to be "hostile entities" plus "literate" for "Hostile entities can read", which is probably the reason why you're employing the symbols in the first place. So I was musing time symbols - I mean, if you're using glersee you probably don't want to draw something as obvious as a clock face.
>>47361154>>47356686>>47383692>>47370857Pro-longed exposure to the internet is just turning into one big test- an attempt to gradually and steadily create functional "rationalized insanity". Controlled chaos. So when the time comes we won't be at a loss.
