You are Evrumine, Minotaur Soulborn, member of Team Fellstorm, and right now, in charge of your own team.

The Chosen one is walking past your hideout, surrounded by two dozen adventurers from Hongenstone, the Merciful Sisters, The Blackfeathers, Shockdance, Malkals Marauders and one group you don't know but seems to be lightly armoured and favouring spears as their weapons.

You have a bunch of skeletons and zombies, and two undead trolls. When everyone is in place you have your hand, and the attack begins!

Skeletons and zombies flood down two alleyways on the left of the group, crashing into the adventurers on that flank like a wave. As expected they hold their ground against the weak undead but more of the adventurers are pulled from the front, rear and right flank to support them.

The two trolls tearing into the right flank draw attention back to that side, leaving the front and rear defences stretched very thin.

Yelling loudly, you and Kittrane charge from the rear; every available adventurer races to fight you, blocking you from attacking the chosen one.

Every one except the human wizard Jennath at least. Chame hangs back in her disguise just in case....

Nevyn Leaps from a rooftop towards the chosen one, only for an air elemental to appear out of well, air, and throw her back the way she came, spinning through the air and clawing wildly, until she lands in the next street over, sounding pretty angry.

Still, it gives Chame the opening she needs – all alone with the chosen one, she simply swings her staff at head height and knocks the young acolyte out cold, 'winning' the encounter. A loud bell-like noise in Chame's vicinity announces her success.

Of course, that now leaves you all facing two dozen angry adventurers, and for once even Chame looks worried by the amount of attention she's receiving, rather than feeding off it.
>>
You could run, but Chame has little chance of escape, or maybe going down fighting is more fun – after all you're not here as a team, you're the monsters right now.

“Chame get out of there!” you yell, as the adventurers turn to face her.

Chame swiftly morphs into a bird and flaps frantically, only to take an arrow through the wing from one of the Blackfeathers.

“Chame!” you yell, rushing forwards against the two dwarf fighters in your way. They're tough little guys and don't go down easy, well, they don't really go down at all, but you slam your axe into the shield of one, knocking him reeling, and then charge at the other one, leaping onto him and using him as a step to leap higher from, coming down next to Chame.

Kittrane's efforts are less acrobatic but no less effective: shrugging off the maces of a pair of the Merciful Sisters she clears a space around her using her huge burning axe and then simply lunges through the gap.

Chame changes back to her natural form and brings up her crossbow, firing a bolt into the shoulder of one of the adventurers rushing towards you.

Nevyn comes racing around a street corner, claws scrabbling on the cobbles as she tries to change direction without losing too much speed. Leaping into the spear-wielders she takes two of them down as she claws and bites her way to your side.

“Can we ride out?” asks Chame, reloading, looking at the hulking form of Nevyn.

Kittrane gives a savage grin “with all these archers, mages and priests, probably not.”

Your foes close in around you, hammering at you all. You escape the worst of it but Nevyn takes a few hits, and one of the Merciful Sisters hits Kittrane with a spell.

“Swarm them, get the priests!” you yell to the undead – who do as commanded, the undead trolls battering adventurers out of their way with huge fists and the skeletons and zombies rushing through the gaps created by all of them turning to face your little group in the midst of them.

The Merciful Sisters and the priests in the other parties turn skeletons and zombies to dust and and burn holes in the lumbering trolls, but it diverts their attention at least.

“Go small and go!” you yell at Chame, she nods, turning into a small cat and darting between adventurers feet on her bit to freedom.

With Kittrane at one side of you and Nevyn at another you hack your way out; your toughness, Nevyn's ferocity and Kittrane's burning aura and axe all help you break free of the mob surrounding you long enough to flee – the last of the undead covering your escape.

Several streets over you stop running, all breathing hard, Chame trotting over in cat form and transforming.

“That was fun!” says the mimic girl brightly “can we do it again?”

Kittrane gives a her a rather dark look, and Nevyn an annoyed huff.

“What now?” you say, before remembering that is supposed to be your call.

“I mean um, do we have any other tasks or should we 'ead back?” you ask your compatriots.

“Head back” says Kittrane “I think the final event is this evening – we've finished early so we have some time before the final battle.”

“Ah” you say, as the four of you head back to the nearest staging point for the monsters “so um, what shall we do?”

“I'm going to have a look at the lords keep” says Kittrane “the final event is going to be all of us attacking it, so knowing the layout would be good.”

Nevyn transforms into her human form, stretches and announces “I'm hungry, I'm off to the mess tent.”

You look to Chame, she grins “let's go to the adventurers staging point” she says, a twinkle in her eye “we can say hi” Or annoy people, or play pranks on them, your brain fills in the gaps.

“I think we should go and look at the castle” you say to a surprised Chame, adding “if we are going to be attacking it then Kittrane is right – we should know more about it.”

Chame moans and drags her feet, but doesn't abandon you as you spend several hours wandering through the lords keep, talking to the Daves as they prepare for the final event, and trying to figure out the layout.

“So um, what is the plan?” you ask one of the Daves, overlooking the keeps surrounding grounds. Kittrane and Chame are with the other Dave elsewhere in the keep.

“Well Miss” says Dave, rubbing his hands together and giving you a creepy-looking grin “since the adventurers, that is to say, the other adventurers, the ones working against you, didn't accomplish any of their main goals, only some of the side-quests, this means that they don't actually have anyway of defeating the Witch King, making this an end-of-the-world type scenario – for the town at least. Now what that means is that teams will be awarded points based upon how many foes they defeat, how long they hold key locations, stuff like that, but no one is expected to survive until dawn – if they do, mucho points. Now Az-er Professor Sallazar told me that he wants to keep it fair on them so he'll mostly be hanging back, countering any big magics they try. Most of the actual attacking of the keep will be done by you and the other pretty bits, plus of course plenty of undead, including animated townfolk, some undead giants we've managed to get ready, and thanks to one creative young chap, a really big swarm of rats.”
>>
Skin crawling a little at that you ask “'Ow will we be attacking, I mean, this whole place is so big, surely they can't defend all these walls” – you gesture to the large compound surrounding the keep, protected by an eight foot-high wall and metal railings atop that. You're standing on one of the balconies of the main keep – a squat and ugly castle, that nevertheless looks pretty tough to get into - with only two doors and thick high walls, arrowslits all around the walls this appears to be the only obstacle.

Dave nods, cackling “I see you are a young lady of discerning tastes” he says “see that?” he points to a hedge maze below you, doing something with a rod adorned with buttons and stones of all types.

As you watch the ordinary-looking hedge maze transforms – the hedges grow higher and thicker, mist covers the whole thing as the maze starts to expand cover more of the grounds, roots burst from the ground and lash around – ready to grab any unwary invaders. Within the mist you can see vague shapes moving – monsters, guardians of some kind maybe.

“We've taken all of his lordships ornamental features and turned them into horrible traps” Dave confides in you “I am particularly proud of the fountains.”

“The fountains?” you give him a puzzled look “how can a fountain be scary?”

“High pressure water, a few water elementals and pipes bursting from the ground” says Dave with a maniacal gleam in his eye “cleans inside and out – you might need your clothes repaired after though.” Well, now you know to avoid the fountains.

“And some of the new kids had a few ideas for the Aviary” admits Dave grudgingly.

“The Aviary?” you ask, stumbling over that word a little.

“Avoid the Peacocks is all I'm saying” says Dave “seriously.”

“Anything else?” you ask, with mounting horror as Dave lists off a few more everyday things turned into nightmares.
>>
“Hmm” says Dave, thinking “oh yeah, tunnels under the keep, obvious way in right, look, you look like the sort of girl who likes to keep clean-”

“Um, thanks.” you say, you think that was a compliment.

“So you might want to avoid them” he says “slimes, big ones” spreading his arms as wide as they will go.

By the end of the tour you're a mixture of impressed, excited, horrified and a little nauseated.

After dinner you gather with the other girls as the Professor outlines the plan.

“So” he says, pointing out features on an illusion of the keeps and surrounding grounds that hovers above you “getting past the outer wall isn't going to be a problem, the problems star when we're in there. The main road up to the keep will likely be festooned with traps, as well as having guards and maybe some of the adventurers as regular ambushers.”

“Going across the fields means covering a lot of open ground – I'd expect the defenders to put all the archers they can on these rises here and here – anyone going over that will get shot at a lot, then will have a lot of guards to fight through.

“The gardens hah, I'm told there is in Dave's words 'a maze and a few other bits of fun' – I'm sure it'll be interesting.”

“Now the approach from the back is” Sallazar consults his notes “'a nice sedate walk along a narrow walkway surrounded by calming waters' – hahah very funny Dave, get ready to get wet if you go this way girls. You'll be walking on a narrow walkway that cuts through a lake – I'm sure nothing at all can go wrong there”.

“And finally, we'll be sending in one team through the tunnels under the keep. Your approach will be expected, but there are several ways out from the tunnels into keeps cellars and they won't be able to cover them all in any real force.”
>>
He starts handing out the assignments.

Can't think of any, Evrumine and Nevyn are perfect for tunnel, as is Chame for scouting out the exit.

You are Safire, student, Earth Elemental Soulborn, and really, really nervous!

Oh sure, being picked as part of the team going underground was fine – you like that, nothing makes you feel safer than small spaces where nothing can sneak up on you, but why did the Professor put you in charge? And why did Anlanesa let him?! She's the one who knows how to be a team leader, not you!

Or, or Phaysis maybe or...ok maybe not Calluna, she doesn't think the same as anyone else after all.

Wandering through the tunnels under the keep you try and recall everything the professor said, every bit of advice you ever heard him give any of the other team leaders. No wait, wrong thing, you're supposed to be looking out for like monsters and traps and stuff, someone said something about slimes right, oh and you need to talk to your team, to make sure they know what they're supposed to be doing.

“Keep an eye out for monsters” you say “like slimes, and traps, because I think there might be traps down here, and slimes!”

You have your mask off, you really don't like taking it off, but you need to be able to watch out for stuff, also Phaysis said the extra light helps.

“No slimes yet” says Calluna, peering around into the darkness “if we find one, can I keep it?”

“No!” Anlanesa and Phaysis both say firmly.

Yes, that's why they should be leader – you would have let her keep it and....wait what's that?

Up ahead is a lot of thick white stuff, getting closer you realise its spider webbing. That's got to be one big spider. It's also blocking the tunnel ahead, and the ones nearby that it branches in to. Well, not blocking exactly, you might be able to get through but you'd get all gooped up.

“Yuck” says Anlanesa, looking at it in disgust, turning to you she says “what do you want us to do Safire?”

“I'm not, I don't-” you say nervously, clutching your robe in your hands “can't you decide? Please?”
>>
“The Professor put you in charge” says Anlanesa, smiling at you encouragingly “with Phaysis and her fire wings we could burn it.”

“Or I could go and talk to them!” Calluna volunteers.

“Or a detour around” says Phaysis dubiously, wandering through several side-passageways, could take a while though.”

“But if we burn it, won't we end up fighting the spiders or whatever?” you say. You wish Kittrane were here!

“Probably” admits Anlanesa “but they might flee the fire, or if not they'd be hurt already.”

“Um...Um...” you say, clutching your robe tightly.

“Calluna!” you say, well, sort of scream.

“Yes?” she says, the flesh of her face disappearing as she looks at you, revealing what doesn't look like human muscles at all underneath.

“Can you talk to them” you say, almost pleading “Please?”

“Sure” she says, going down on hands and feet and crawling into the mass of webbing, after you've cast a spell to protect her, just in case.

You wait.

After a while Anlanesa says “Safire, I don't want to be second-guessing you-”

“Was that a bad idea?” you blurt out “should I go and get her back?” you take a half-step towards the mass of webbing.

“No, no” says Anlanesa “give Calluna a chance at least.”

Phaysis snorts, sounding amused.

Eventually Calluna emerges, with spiderwebbing clinging to every visible part of her.

“We can pass” she says, climbing to her feet, you give a sigh of relief “if” she adds.

Wait, if?

“we choose one of our own to be eaten by them” she says.

You all stare at her, mouths agape.

“Calluna, are you crazy?” asks Anlanesa.

At the same time Phaysis says “no way, they're going to burn.”

Calluna smirks, then giggles, then doubles over laughing, in between guffaws she says “it's fine, we can go past, no sacrifice, it's fine.”

Oh, that's...good, you think.

“Then what...?” you ask.

Once Calluna's merriment has died down she pulls forth a handful of white spheres the size of marbles, all stuck together.

“I agreed to adopt some” says Calluna, crooning to the spider eggs “my little babies, mommy is here, yes she is, beautiful little thirteen-legged babies aren't you? Yes you are!”

As you wonder whether running away screaming is proper leader behaviour, Phaysis sniffs and says “sure, if the Professor let's you keep them.”

Calluna hugs the eggs to her chest, then hides them inside a pocket, glaring at Phaysis.

“I think, I think we should move on” you say, before they start arguing.
>>
Calluna is right – you all make your way past the webbing without anything bad happening, apart from getting sticky white strands all over you. You can't shake the nagging feeling of eyes watching you all the time either.

Continuing further into the tunnels you keep going higher and higher, until you start to see what must be old disused storerooms from the keep, all mouldy and yucky.

Whilst peering into one of these you hear Phaysis shriek behind you, spinning around you see a huge green gloopy mass drop from the ceiling right atop where she was just standing. Looking up you see more green blobs, each maybe half your size, 12 in all, stuck to the ceiling, they are gathering above each of you, and the one that went splat on the floor is oozing towards a disgusted-looking Phaysis.

You're in a ruined old corridor, with old storerooms on either side, and a dozen green slimes trying to eat you. Phaysis is looking like she's going to be sick, Anlanesa is looking up and getting ready to dodge aside as soon as a slime falls, and Calluna, is looking at the slimes on the ceiling over her and frowning, saying to herself “no, that's not right, wrong colour.”

“Run!” you yell at the team, racing forwards as fast as you dare in this place, leaping aside as a huge snot-like mass splashes into the floor near you.

The others follow along quickly, keeping an eye on the ceiling and veering around the slimes already on the floor.

Before long you're far from danger and the only one of you hit by falling slimes was Anlanesa – and one it landed on her it started moving very slowly and was easily pried off before it could do much more than melt holes in her clothes, meaning she's now wearing even less than normal.

“I could-” Phaysis offers her cloak to Anlanesa again. You're positive that you're about to come out into the lower part of the keep – the stone around you is carved rather than natural, and paving slabs are under your feet – oh sure they look old and some are cracked but you're definitely in part of the keep.

“I'm fine” insists Anlanesa “really Phaysis you worry too much, besides it would be too hot in that.”

“But 'Nesa!” says Phaysis, sounding outraged, “you're not, you can't, it's not decent!” She was raised by priestesses or something, you recall.

Anlanesa is...well she never wears much anyway, but now she's wearing what amount to scraps of cloth, you wish you had her confidence – she seems utterly unconcerned that you could run into anyone and they'd see...well everything.

“Shh!” Calluna says, wandering ahead “Someone's up there.”

Instantly everyone is quiet, sneaking ahead together you climg a short flight of stairs to see a hallway at the end of the corridor you're in. At the end of the hallway, in front of a heavy-looking door, are a half-dozen guards, all gathered around a small fireplace set into the wall, chatting and drinking ale.

They're right next to the door, and obviously here to guard it, but they're not doing much guarding, in fact you could probably just walk right by them, but the door is probably locked, and opening it would make a lot of noise.
>>
“What do we do?” Calluna whispers quietly, as you all crouch down on the stairs, far from the guards.

“Um...” You say, hands bunched into your robes, why do you have to decide?

“Well we can either sneak up and attack” says Anlanesa “try to get past them without us noticing, or backtrack and try another way in.”

“Or” says a rather disapproving-sounding Phaysis “maybe someone who likes swanning around almost naked could simply flaunt herself to distract them.”

Anlanesa and Phaysis lock gazes, neither looking very happy.

Into the awkward silence that follows, Calluna says in a puzzled tone “but Chame isn't here.”

“It should be easy to sneak up on them and knock them out right?” you ask.

Anlanesa blinks and looks away from Phaysis “Sorry, what did you say?”

“I said” you keep your voice low “that with them sat there just talking, we should be able to just sneak up and knock them out, right?”

“Yes of course” Phaysis cuts in “after you Safire.” The moment or whatever between them has passed, and they're focused on the dungeon again.

The six guards are indeed oblivious and when you each select one and attack by surprise, the each go down quickly, barely having time to grab their weapons. The remaining two, surrounded and outnumbered, surrender.

“Don't get paid enough for this” one grumbles as he hands over the keys to the door and you're in the keep!

It's quieter in these halls – you can hear stuff happening in the distance, but it's coming from outside.

“Uh, what now?” asks Calluna, that's a good question. You think you might have gotten here earlier than any of the other teams.

“Ummm...” you say, dithering.

“Opening the front gates would be the best thing” Anlanesa suggests, even as Phaysis says “no the back gates.” That sounds much better, Kittrane is on that team!

“Won't there be defenders at the top” says Calluna “should we not go and stop them from shooting everyone.”

You recall the Professor saying something about some of the enemy teams hiding due to the fact that the longer they survive, the more points they get – maybe hunting them out is a good idea?

“Letting everyone in is why we snuck inside” you say “we'll start with the back gates – there should be fewer defenders there” You don't know if that is true, but you want to see Kittrane again, she'll know what to do!

Together you sneak through the keep, avoiding the occasional patrols, until you get to the back gate – you were right it was only watched by a couple of guards and together you manage to knock them down before they know what hit them.

You eagerly lift the heavy bar locking the back gate and open it up, outside you can see a small group of girls hurrying up the long road, just coming up from the lake. Kittrane is in the lead and she looks up at the open door and raises her axe, ready to face the defenders pouring forth. Arrows rain down from above.

“It's me” you say, trying to pitch your voice just loud enough to carry to her. Kittrane grunts in surprise and doubles back, wrapping one arm around a wet and bedraggled-looking Nataline and half-carrying her into the keep, accompanied by Tisania and Chame.

“What happened to her?” asks Phaysis, looking at the coughing Nataline with concern.

“Lake monster” says Tisania. Chame is grinning, there's a story there.

“What do we do now?” you ask Kittrane as she puts Nataline down on one of the guards chairs.

“You're asking me?” she says, looking surprised.

“Uh huh” you nod, she'll know what to do – she's amazing.

“Well, are we the first one's in?” Kittrane asks.

“So far as we know, yes” says Anlanesa “we came straight here.”

“Well, says Kittrane thoughtfully “we need to get the front door open, put a watch on the main hall in case of a counter-attack and take out the defenders on the roof. Chame, Calluna – watch the main hall, let us know if they are coming out Phaysis, can you look after Nataline until she's recovered? Good. Ok, so Anlanesa, Tisania – take out the archers on the top will you?”
>>
“Are you sure that's wise?” asks Anlanesa “just you and Safire against all the guards on the main gate?”

Kittrane snorts “of course I am” she says “Safire and I can handle it” Your heart swells with pride at the confidence Kittrane is showing in you.

Anlanesa nods towards you, but keeps her eyes on Kittrane “you're not the only team leader here” she says “I think we shouldn't split up our forces, maybe we should al go to the main gate, what do you think Safire?”

Wait, what? Is Anlanesa asking you to-to-disagree with Kittrane?!

You can't do that! No way, Kittrane's plan is perfect! Chame and Calluna can watch the hall and if any of those adventurers do try to burst out then Calluna can use some of her summoned thingies to distract them and rush to warn you all!

Huh, she could even use her...whatever they are to watch the hall on their own, but if that's so then...how come Kittrane didn't suggest it?

Anlanesa and Kittrane are still arguing.

“Excuse me” you say, your voice quieter than a whisper. No one hears you.

“Um” you sa a little louder, and then again, Both of them turn to look at you, a little surprised.

“Could...could Calluna summon some of her...her friends to watch the hall instead” you say “then me, Kittrane, Calluna and Chame could go and open the main gate?” you suggest diffidently “I mean, could that work?”

The two of them stare at you for a moment. Kittrane blinks, Anlanesa blinks, Chame giggles, you try not to faint.

Into the silence Calluna says “I think I know how to change my spiders so that they can turn invisible and fly, and breathe fire – it's all a matter of diet really.”

“Safire is absolutely right” says Kittrane quickly, just as Anlanesa says “Sorry Calluna, no time for that now, we need you to call up a few friends – that front gate won't open itself!”

XXX

“The gatehouse is just ahead” Chame whispers to you, Calluna and Kittrane “Eight guards, plus those Shockdance guys.” You're hiding in a spiral stairwell – in the corridor just level with your head is a single guard standing in front of a door, but thanks to Chame sneaking ahead you know what's on the other side of it.

Kittrane chews her lower lip “Ok, Safire casts Stoneskin on each of us and we bust in there and take them all out.”

Wait, aren't those Shockdance guys bards, won't they mess with your minds? And Calluna probably has enough energy left to call up an ally or two...

You miss what else she says, you're too busy being happy!

XXX

When the lone guard on the door spots you all charging at him, he drops his spear, screams and runs, together you and Kittrane hit the heavy wooden door and smash it in. The guards and members of Shockdance all turn to you in surprise, and looking past you to Calluna's...friends some of them start whimpering.

You're all fighting in a large room with a giant horizontal wheel in the middle with heavy wooden spokes coming out of it – the mechanism for raising the portcullis and opening the gate.

Taking advantage of their surprise you, Kittrane, Calluna and her friends all charge in, as Chame hangs back, using her crossbow to stop one of the members of Shockdance cast some sort of spell.

Two of the guards hack at you with heavy swords, but you don't feel a thing, punching back you send one sprawling, and the other just folds up, coughing.

Kittrane bursts into a mass of guards, laying about her with her axe, sending them flying backwards, the rest of the guards mob her. She doesn't look scared though – she looks happy, a feral grin on her face.
Leaping atop the wheel with her...strange allies behind her, Calluna confronts a pair of Shockdance. Despite her many limbs and her helpers, they both manage to avoid her attacks and land several good blows of their own, one even manages to send her allies reeling with a sonic spell of some kind – even across the room you can feel your teeth hurt.

Calluna isn't looking good, her foes have the upper hand there.

You know your team-mates can handle themselves – you need to get that gate open!

Running up to one of the wooden spokes you grab it with both hands and start to push. It moves slowly at first, but soon it moves faster and faster. Round and round you go, looking up you see the two Shockdance members stumble, giving Calluna a chance to counter attack.

Chame seems to be handing her attacker just fine – protected by your spell and her own malleable body – she simply soaks up all the punishment the guy from Shockdance can give her; leaping and spinning he tries punches, kicks, even tries to choke her at one point – she responds by turning into a snake and wrapping him up.

One member of Shockdance flies off the wheel as you keep pushing it, then another. Breathing hard, Calluna motions her minions to help you, saying “Thanks Safire” A loud booming noise tells you the gates are fully open.

Throughout it all Kittrane has been trading blows with the soldiers around her, finishing up by grabbing one by the collar and running him headfirst into a wall.

“Look!” says Chame, peering out of an arrow slit. Joining her you can just see the undead hordes rushing into the gate.

“Game. Set. Match.” says Calluna with obvious satisfaction, before slumping down on the wheel, still reeling from some of the hits she took.

“Is it over?” you ask Kittrane.

She nods “as good as” she says “but there will be the final fight in the main hall, plus no doubt a few teams lying low to hunt out.”

“Dibs hunting!” says Chame.

“You go” says Calluna, flapping an arm “I just wanna, I just...gimme a minute, k?” She lays back on the wheel.

All around you are groaning guards, and annoyed-looking members of Shockdance.

Kittrane heads towards the door, over her shoulder she says “I'm heading for the final stand in the Hall, you coming?”

You dash to catch up to Kittrane, almost running into her, then say as calmly as you can “uh sure, if you want me to.”

Kittrane sniggers “Yes, of course I want you to come with.”

In the end, having completed so few of their objectives, the adventurers don't have a chance. Oh sure – they put up a brave fight: Back-to-back the Hongenstone dwarves refuse to fall, only being defeated when they get separated; firing arrow after arrow the Blackfeathers take out dozens of undead before being swarmed under; lashing out with holy powers and spells to destroy the undead, the Merciful Sisters seem unbeatable – until you and Kittrane charge...

All of the adventurers groups put up a good fight, but in the end it is for naught – all of them are defeated, and Professor Sallazar as the Witch-king gives some speech about the next step being world domination. You don't remember much of it – it's late and you're really tired. You don't recall actually going to bed – you just remember waking up in yours the next morning. Maybe someone carried you?

Rubbing sleep from your eyes you go downstairs to see everyone sat at long tables, mingling and talking about the battles – clubs mix with each other, tales are told of victories, and defeats and friendships and rivalries are born.

Grabbing a plate of food you sit next to your friends and listen to them talk about the battles they had.

“So he'd shot Janrael about six times so far” Lucinda tells everyone nearby “what he thought he was shooting at I dunno – but you have never seen her so angry! So she drops on him from above, knocks him flat, stands over him – forgetting she had a skirt on - puts her sword to his throat and what does he say?”

“I wasn't wearing a skirt!” protests a blushing Janrael.

“Did it hurt when you fell from Heaven!” finishes Lucinda, drawing giggles from everyone around her as well as assurances from several that Janrael has clearly found the guy for her.

She just leans over her breakfast and ignores them.

“What, what're we doing after breakfast?” you ask Tisania, sat to one side of you “are we going home?”

“At midday” she says “Until then we can do what we want – Kittrane and Phoebe have already accepted challenges from other clubs. Lucinda and Nataline are going shopping, Phaysis is doing something with the Merciful girls...” She lists all the different ways your friends are to while away a few hours.

“What about you?” you ask. Tisania looks away and mumbles something.

Actually...you want to see Tisania taking kids flying – it sounds fun to watch. And if they're not afraid of her, maybe they won't be scared of you either, or treat you like something to be cut up and sold...

After breakfast you put on your robe and mask and follow Tisania to the orphanage – an unassuming building in a poorer part of the town. Having finished breakfast themselves, the younger children are playing, with a couple of the older ones – perhaps only a year or three younger than you – watching them.

Tisania's arrival has them all rushing to greet her, and she seems even shyer than them, answering the flood of questions with short answers, and drawing her wings around her like a protective cloak. Of course when they start asking her about flying, she opens up some more, and it is not long before she has a young child secured to her front with a harness as she climbs up into a tree and then soars across the small compound, with a gang of children running beneath her.

You stand back and watch her, you're happy for her, she looks...peaceful, pleased with herself.

“Hey!” says a voice nearby “if you're going to just stand around, you can make yourself useful, hold this.”

Turning, you automatically take the bundle thrust into your arms, and then almost drop it as you realise one of the older children just handed you a baby – a tiny scrap of a thing covered in a dirty cloth, a red face screwed up as it grizzles.

“What, I can't, no, what do I do?!” you protest as the girl, younger than you, holds up her arms in refusal as you try to give it (him? her?) back.

“I got laundry to do” she says “look Gips is teething, he's not really sick no matter how much he whines. Just hold him for me.”

“But I-I don't know how!” You wail

“Oh fertheluvva” she sighs “like this, one arm under here, support his head, yeah, like that.”
>>
As you gingerly hold him, she gives you a curious look “your face all scarred up or something? Someone pour hot fat on you? Happened to a friend of mine once.”

“What? No” you say “I just, I don't like people staring.”

“Well, suit yersel” she says, shrugging and turning to go “but babiess want to see a face, he'll never stop fussing if all he can see is a mask.”

Left alone with the baby, and watching Tisania soar through the air with another child, you can see no one else nearby. Supporting baby Gips with one hand, you put your mask up, exposing your face.

He stops crying and looks at you, his face slack with confusion, bathed in the soft blue glow that radiates from you.

Suddenly he smiles and reaches for you, patting your cheek with a chubby hand. Utterly unafraid of you, happy to see you.

Hours later Professor Sallazar finds you still at the orphanage, helping with the children, when everyone else is on the lightning rail already.
