You are Takashi Wakui, a sixteen year old Japanese high school student. In your world, half of humanity possesses a Persona—the corporeal manifestation of one’s personality as a supernatural entity. You had been an unlucky ordinary at first, lacking the potential to summon your Persona. Then the application AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. It sucked you into the nightmarish realm of the Blackened Void, where you fought monsters and awakened your Persona in the process.

You are now the Wild Card of the 22nd Century. You possess the Fool Arcana, giving you the power to draw strength from bonds and wield multiple Personas at once. Already this places you in great danger, as the Fool Arcana is seen as an impossibility by the common masses. Revealing your newfound power to the common world would immediately land your head on a dissection table. To make matters worse, you and several others have been cursed as the Void’s Chosen, fated to traverse the wastelands of the Blackened Void until the end of the game. For what purpose does AETHER exist, what mysteries lie within and how is victory achieved?

Countless miles away, in the midst of an alternate reality where the Void’s Chosen originate from, Aria von Wittelsbach rises from her unconsciousness. Her delicate eyelashes flutter as she forces her eyelids open. She cringes mentally as tentacles of fluorescent light assaults her vision. She tries to raise her hand to shield off the rays—a little unnecessary considering she could merely shut her eyes again—and fails. A powerful weight has tied itself to her hands, her arms, every limb of her malnourished and frail body. It is the grogginess that comes with too much rest. Leave it alone, and it shall spread and make her numb. If only one’s emotions worked that way, part of her wonders.

“Oh, you’re awake.”

She still has enough energy to roll her head to the side. There is an android nurse in a snow-white uniform standing next to her bed. Thus, she concludes, she is in a hospital. Where else could she be? Certainly not at a classmate’s house. Any ordinary person would be surprised at suddenly being relocated from their school dorm to a medical facility. Aria the German girl is not an ordinary girl, not even an ordinary Persona-user by any stretch of her or anybody else’s imagination.

This is not the first time events in her life have played out in such a fashion. It is most likely not going to be the last.

Her arm twitches. Something is attached to it. An IV drip, full of precious nutrients. One of the many facets of medical science magic has yet to replicate.

“You’ve made quite a fuss around here, young lady.” The android nurse scolds. Her tone is motherly, warm. Disgusting unfamiliarity washes over said young lady. “To think you were neglecting to eat properly and not taking your medication…catching influenza on top of that! How you were granted permission to live alone is such a mystery! Why, there are certainly a few choice words I would like to give to your guardian…”

With instinct, not conscious effort, Aria tunes out the voice. She lies in her bed. She stares at the ceiling. It’s all she can do. Despite the central heating, her body is cold. Not the outside, which is snugly wrapped in the white hospital sheets, but the inside, whispering to her of the personal transgressions she made, replaying her mistakes over and over again like a sick theatre. She shivers, but makes no move to wrap her arms around herself. The simulation, in this case, cannot hold a candle to the reality.

“You were very lucky, young lady. A friend of yours came to your rescue. He called an ambulance for you and the good men here picked you up—”

“Pardon?” Aria asks.

The android nurse blinks, then resumes her speech with that same, almost infuriating pleasant smile. “A friend called an ambulance for you. There are a lot of selfish people these days, especially now that magic has segregated humanity in two, so that friend of yours must be very good for him to come to your aid in—”

“Wrong.” She doesn’t need to think. She interrupts without giving the nurse’s words a single thought.

“Pardon?”

“Wrong. You’re wrong. I…” Aria whispers, her voice raspy, “I don’t have any friends…”

“Really?” The android nurse says, opening up a holographic screen on her tablet. “The boy who called the ambulance for you made a statement that said otherwise.”

“What?” Aria gasps.

“Let’s see here…what was his name…ah, that’s right. Wakui! Does that name ring a bell, young lady? His name was Takashi Wakui…”

“Hey, can I ask a question?”

“What, Akikazu?”

The blonde boy points to the grassy ground, or rather the formerly grassy ground. Any earth that has suffered a stampede consisting of over two dozen AETHER game constructs and several AETHER Players has no real reason to be covered in vegetation any more. It’s devoid of weapons, clothing or any traces of the past battle. Take a second look, and it could very well be the remnants of a passing travelling caravan.

“Did we just kill those elves?” For once, Akikazu is not irritated—a miracle in of itself. There’s a worried frown on his expression, as if he suddenly realized that he left the gas on after leaving the house.

“Uh…”

“Because we beat the shit out of them, then they disappeared.” He says, frankly. “That’s death right?”

If you recall from literally a minute ago, the bodies of the elves dissipated into black particles upon defeat. That includes for the ones of the crosses. You dig through your memory and recall that something similar happened to the black knight in Pyre Ruin Valley.

“Um, does it really matter?”

“I’d like to get my facts straight. Because if these guys were alive and they did die…goddamn, that’s disturbing.” He looks up at you. “Hey, why aren’t you freaking about this a little?”

You pause and think. “I don’t think we can be blamed for defending ourselves.”

“Yeah, I get that. But still, all I wanted was to beat them into submission, not like get rid of them forever.”

“I actually think we might have put those elves out of their misery.” You say. Akikazu raises an eyebrow, his mouth half-shaped into his traditional scowl. Taking that as a sign of continue, you proceed. “I don’t know about you, but I sort of got the sense that the elves were in pain.”

“Okay, how the hell do you know that?”

You shrug your shoulders. “…from the way they screamed a lot? Or how they were covered in a mother’s worst nightmare?”

“Mother’s worst nightmare? What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Her kids being at the bottom of the class? Dammit Takashi, speak proper Japanese for once!”

“I meant that they were covered in boils and rashes. They were heavily infected by something. A virus, I don’t know. It’s like a zombie plague, except those guys weren’t shambling corpses.”

“Then don’t call them zombies, you moron.”

“I didn’t!”

“You did so—”

“If I may interject for a moment.” Announces one Fumika Shibuya. You and Akikazu stop to stare at her. Save for a few scratches running down the side of her cheek and a bit of mud, your Spotter is perfectly unharmed from the previous battle. “I would appreciate it if you two would let me add some more depth to this argument.”

“What?” You ask.

“Takashi is right. The elves, or Denizens in this sector, were in a lot of pain. Moros verified this. However, the same can be said for Shadows, which are comprised of the negative emotions of humanity and whose mere existence is automatically a whirlwind of negativity and suffering. In terms of their overall presence, the elves were fought and the Shadows are similar.”

You think back to a couple of weeks ago, before you and your team got assaulted by that rampaging Minotaur Shadow. “We saw Shadows splitting apart elves from the inside in the past. Does that have anything to do with this?”

Fumika closes her eyes and contemplates. “Perhaps the reason why the elves and the Shadows felt so similar is because the elves were a premature stage, similar to how a cocoon will eventually hatch into a butterfly. It could be that their relationship is a parasitic one, with the Shadows acting as the egg and the elves acting as the host. Well, I believe we’ll receive more answers once we finish interrogating the sole survivor of this battle. And Akikazu?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you feel remorse for killing Shadows, despite their humanoid appearance?”

“Well, no.” He states his answer as if it is the most obvious thing in the entire world. It is a top contender, that’s for sure. “They’re Shadows. They attack without remorse and they try to kill us.”

“Then given the similarities in behaviour, you should feel no remorse for slaying the horde of elves.” Fumika says, simple yet cold. “Furthermore, it is debatable how alive a construct of a game can be. An incredibly immersive one to the extent where reality has begun to merge with it, but a game nonetheless. ”

You look further ahead, towards the trio of crosses. The fog gate has dissipated, as has the one behind you. Two of the crosses are empty, while a prisoner struggles against the restraints in the middle. Also, Celeste is there, attempting to use a combination of dexterous finger-work and nail scraping to undo the binds.

“Oh, forget this!”

Then she sets them on fire. Of course she does. The ropes crumble to ashes immediately. No caution is given for how this could potentially start a forest fire. It is more evidence of how Persona-users are magnitudes more reckless than ordinary humans.

You hear the clanking and grinding of metal from behind. It’s Knight Laurence, whose ghostly form is beginning to lose its brilliance. The summon timer must be ticking down to the end. Only a few grains of sand remain. Again, Laurence's visor remains in the same place, preventing you from seeing his true face. Despite that, his confident walk and his friendly wave give you the impression that he had a good time.

Is there something you would like to say to him before he vanishes?

“Good work today.” You say. “Remember anything?”

“Bits and pieces.” The knight acknowledges, resting the iron-covered fingers beneath his helmet. “Various scenes flash in front of my eyes, as if I were reading them from an artist’s portfolio. I suppose once I return I will have a nap, then ruminate on what happened today. Ho ho!”

“Return?” You question. “It’s almost as if you expected to be summoned here. Are you aware that you’re in a video game?”

The knight tilts his head, puzzled. “Game? You children slay the Feyel Alari for your own amusement? How very shocking…”

“The what now?”

“As for your first statement, why yes I did expect that this fine young man would summon me.” Knight Laurence rests a friendly hand on Akikazu’s shoulder, who now looks several degrees more uncomfortable. “Were you not aware of it?”

“What the hell are you saying?” Akikazu barks. “And to think I thought you couldn’t get any more creepier…”

“Strange.” Knight Laurence says. “I had initially believed that you children were aware of the special circumstances that have plague this world. The strange phenomena that began from decades ago...no, from your stares it does not sound familiar at all, am I correct. It seems that I was mistaken. Do forgive me.”

He looks down and sees that his body is now practically thin air. The magic that kept him supported in this Sector is inches from vanishing into nothingness. The next few words tumble out of his helmet, as if they were a bag of bricks sent down a steep hill.

“Well then, it seems I must be off. If you children ever return to the valley, find me against and I’ll explain in detail. You may also be able to assist with a task with mine. I could gladly use your assistance…!”

Then he’s gone. The Old Pendant grows cold.

114 is next to fade, whining as he does so. Fumika grants him a tiny nod as a reward, then begins striding to the other side of the clearing. You and Akikazu follow. The elf who was tied to the cross is now on the ground, tasting the dirt. Celeste gives him a hand and he slowly pulls himself up. He looks over your party, starting from Celeste, then to you, to Akikazu and lastly to Fumika.

The elf coughs, a raspy movement that ejects grey spittle and phlegm. Then, a strange set of sounds emerges from his parched mouth.

You remember that you have a few Refreshing Tonics in your backpack. The liquid inside them isn’t a hundred percent water; it is a scientific mixture consisting of many different vitamins and electrolytes to provide the most optimal refreshment for the human body. Or something like that. Science classes were had never been the highlight in your middle school days. In any case, from his cracked and dry lips, you guess the elf is thirsty. Even if he isn’t, sharing a drink is likely to be a sign of goodwill.

>>Takashi: Give the elf a Refreshing Tonic.

The elf picks up the bottle in a hand sheathed in a grey leather fingerless glove. He wraps his fingers around the smooth, intended plastic, before twisting his index finger around the round pink cap.

>>Elf: Drink.

This doesn’t happen. Instead, the elf gives you a curious look matched with a puzzled frown. It’s almost innocent, reminiscent of the time you asked your mother what these strange red fruits were. Oh yeah, that’s right. Elves most likely have no idea what plastic is. How could you overlook that simple fact?

You open the bottle for him. Instantly, recognition leaps onto the elf’s features. His long, sharp features with that heavy nose and those slightly, pink puffed lips. You watch as the elf raises the bottle to his lips and chugs the whole lot in one go. It takes him less than five seconds.
>>
Color returns to the elf’s cheeks. The elf cries something. Probably along the lines of “Fresh!” or “Thanks mate, you really saved me there!” His voice is rough, coarse and deep. Guy’s old, despite his youthful appearance. A noticeable weight tugs at his cheeks and there are scars running across his bare arms an fingers. Notches, scrapes and wedges that speak of past skirmishes and hunts. He’s also toned. Not the bulky toned seen in wrestlers or construction site workmen, but rather the athletic and fit type of toned, designed for endurance and agility.

The elf hands you back the bottle, a grateful smile attached. Celeste takes a few steps forward and gives him a grin.

“Are you feeling better?” She says in her usual, cheerful tone, a sharp contrast from the frenzy and the adrenaline filled anger you saw at the beginning of the battle. Her words are in Japanese. The elf looks at her, then shakes his head, grimacing.

“I don’t think he can understand us.” You comment.

It’s now Celeste’s turn to frown. She tries her native English. Half of it is filtered through the dam of your incompetence. Curse the difficulty of humanity’s most common language. The elf gets it, though. His eyes light up and he begins to speak something that is actually somewhat legible.

“You understand this tongue?” His words are smooth, fluent, natural. But to you, they might as well be separated into individual chunks. Celeste nods and the elf grins. “It’s a relief. I was afraid we might not be able to converse. Young lass, do your friends speak the same language as you?”

“Um, half of them do? The other half isn’t very good at it.” Celeste says, a little sheepish. You give her a small glare and she laughs. “Don’t worry, I can translate for them.”

“Good, good. Allow me to introduce myself, then. My name is Ruvyn, a humble elven traveller. I was wandering around the forest when I was ambushed by those madmen. I would have surely perished at their hands, if it weren’t for your assistance. Thank you so much."

<Azure Scholar> And so, that is how we met Ruvyn, the Companion of the Hazebound Woodlands. His existence was significant, and not just because he provided additional support throughout the many battles and skirmishes experienced in the trials of the game.
<Azure Scholar> The adventures we had together could easily fill up several dreary light novels.
<Azure Scholar> Unfortunately for the readers, our initial meeting with him was not all that exciting.
<Azure Scholar> We had only begun to dig through the bedrock of the mystery of the first Sector.
<Azure Scholar> I believe a brief summary should suffice. So, without further ado
<chocolat_orange> no.
<chocolat_orange> no no no.
<Azure Scholar> Celeste, what are you doing?

<Azure Scholar> I was under the impression that the majority of the group found it particularly dull and the tale would benefit from it being summarized.
<chocolat_orange> well, you got it wrong! why did you agree to go through with this in the first place? you had your induction into the void’s chosen skipped! shouldn’t you be more concerned about something like that?
<Azure Scholar> I consented to it.
<Azure Scholar> (Just like a lot of other things.)
<chocolat_orange> i don’t remember giving consent to skip over the companion of my sector! it’s very important to me. and for him and the rest of the story as well!
<Azure Scholar> Interesting, and understandable. However, I recall receiving it a few days ago. You sent me a message with the following words:
<Azure Scholar> <chocolat_orange> shit’s boring. just get rid of it. nobody cares.
<Azure Scholar> <chocolat_orange> also, i am totally celeste tachibana and not some cool dude.
<Azure Scholar> <chocolat_orange> this messageis 100% legit and not a prank gone wrong gone sexual.
<Azure Scholar> <chocolat_orange> ;)

<chocolat_orange> …
<chocolat_orange> …

<Azure Scholar> It is important to make up for lost time. Sixteen whole years, if you remember.

>>Be Takashi Wakui.

You never stopped being Takashi Wakui. In fact, you don’t think it’s ever possible to stop being you.

You sit with your team and Ruvyn in a small camp at the edge of a flowing stream. The water is cool and almost clear, with very few hints of dirt running through it. After Ruyvn introduced himself and offered his gratitude, he decided that it would be best to take you to a safe area before conversing further. Turns out this camp was only a few minutes walk away from the clearing. Your team had to pass through a series of complicated paths, through the trees and into bushes, before arriving at your current location.

“Ooh, a bonfire!” Celeste had said, the moment she stepped into the area. Before anyone else could react, she had placed her hand on the bronze sword, billowing the flames to life.

“I had intended to light the fire for you…” Ruvyn had said, clearing his throat, “I see I needn't have worried.”

Cloth mats are laid across the ground. A tent is pitched a few metres from the edge of the string. Everyone is camped around the bonfire, the warmth providing an appealing reprieve from the dreariness of the ever-present fog. Ruvyn gestures with his hand, wayward embers lighting up the bottom half of his chin.

“So, Takashi Wakui, Celeste Tachibana, Akikazu Osaragi and Fumika Shibuya? What peculiar names…they are unlike any of the other human names I have encountered. What kingdom are you children from?”

You and Celeste share a glance. “The National Empire of Japan?” you say.

“Japan?” Ruvyn looks confused. “I have never heard of it. Is it across the sea? Most of the territory there is uncharted. If you are from there, then you must be an impressive group of human children.”

“I don’t think our geography can apply to whatever clusterfuck this place is…” Akikazu grumbles.

“Okay, never mind that then.” You say, “Hey Ruvyn, what exactly happened to you? Why were you being held hostage by those other elves?”

“To be honest, I do not know myself.” Ruvyn says. “I was but a simple traveller, working with a merchant company as a guard. One night, I decided it was time to return to my roots and visit my family. So I set out for the forest, imagining how best to tell the tales I had encountered in the world of the humans. Yet, when I arrived here, a strange fog had covered the land and there were no friendly faces in sight. It was surprising, for there should always be sentries stationed at the entrance to our home. My companions and I decided to investigate further and that was when we were ambushed. The rest, as your human phrase says, is history.”

“Did you try talking to the elves?”

“I did!” Ruvyn says. “I attempted to reach an understanding with them. They all refused to say a single world, preferring to lynch me instead. I do not know what I did to offend them, nor why the Watchers of the Forest were not descending upon them that very moment.”

He looks sadly into the bonfire, as if expecting to see the faces of the recently deceased. “What a blight that horde was. I truly wish I could have made peace with them. I believe you children did the right thing, however.”

“You imply that this forest was not originally covered in fog.” Fumika states. “Tell us more about it.”

“I’m afraid there’s not much to say. When I set out on my journey, the home of the Feyel Alari was a magnificent forest, of precious nature and of priceless art—”

Celeste raises her hand. “What’s the Feyel Alari?”

“It is us!” Ruvyn says, looking a little affronted. “The elves. Our race is called the Feyel Alari. Do-do you children not know that?”

“Should we?” You ask.

“I…yes?” Ruvyn gasps. “Gods above, what are they teaching human children in schools these days?”

“Maths, geography, science and English?” You offer. God, talking English is hard. How does Celeste do it? Apart from living in an English-speaking country for over a decade, that is.

Good catch. And Lawrence seems to know something of whatever this blight is, even if his other memories are fried. We should go question him as soon as possible. I wonder where Area 009 fits in, though, it's clearly a different universe. Not really enough data to say at this point, I suppose, we'll have to unlock more areas to figure out how AETHER chooses which parts of which worlds to link to.
>>
>>47431809
That might be worth asking the computer on forlon abyss
>>
>>47431835
I kind of want to save those questions for asking about Chikashi, personally. Maybe once we do level 3, but the level 2 questions should definitely be asking what the Abominations are.
>>
>>47431835
As well as what we can do about Chikashi, and who developed AETHER, and why we were chosen for the game, and why we have to be in fatal accidents before getting dragged into AETHER, and just how many licks DOES it take to the tootsie-roll center of a tootsie-pop?
>>
>>47431864
We might have enough time to ask both
>>
>>47431879
>and why we were chosen for the game
Quite sure we already asked that and the answer was fate or some other bullshit
>>
>>47431864
ndeed. The abominations will likely be an occuring threat. If we know how to stop them and how to cure them, then the issue becomes far less dangerous for us. It means less people we have to protect or keep guarded.

“English! That word keeps coming up again.” Ruvyn proclaims, almost leaping to his feet. “I have studied the human tongue for many years, mostly for my work, but not once have I heard an instance of that word. And that other tongue you children use, the ones with the many vowels. Is it the tongue of your native homeland?”

“Um, yeah but…”

“We are getting off topic.” And thus the friendly conversation has switched back to the side of business. Fumika narrows her eyes at the elf traveller. “Tell us more about the fog, if you will.”

“Like I said, I do not know much. This fog is a mysterious new arrival. It was mostly certainly not here when I left. I believe it has something to do with the strange black creatures that lurk on the roads, though.”

“So you’ve seen them too. The Shadows?”

“Is that what they are called? My companions and I tried our hardest to avoid them. When we did engage in combat, we found that they took some effort to bring them down.”

“What weapons did you use?” You ask.

“Mostly our swords and bows.”

“Try using magic.” Celeste comments.

“I’ll take that into consideration. To be honest, I have not stayed in this forest for a large stretch of time. In fact, I have only just arrived.”

“Then, you know nothing of the origins behind the fog, why your fellow elves have gone mad or why the Shadows are here?”

“Well, I believe I answered your last question, miss Fumika.”

“But for the others, you know nothing?”

“No.”

Fumika does not respond. Ruvyn turns to the rest of your party. “Pardon me, but have I offended her?” he asks, sounding concerned.

Celeste coughs. “I think she’s a little unsatisfied with the amount of ‘intelligence’ you gave us. Anyway, what do you plan on doing now, Ruvyn?”

“I would very much like to head for our city, but I fear that the brigands from earlier may send parties to take vengeance. So I think I’ll keep low for a while, perhaps a few days.” He chuckles. “Don’t worry about me, human children—”

“I swear, if this guy and that knight calls us that one more time…” Akikazu grumbles.

“—I can take care of myself. In fact, I am a skilled hunter. My companions and I would have defeated that horde, if we weren’t numbered ten to one.” He then points to his weapons attached to his body: a curved blade in his belt and the quiver on his back, filled with arrows with white feathers.

You sigh, stretching your arms behind you. All of a sudden, you feel a lot more tired. You yawn. “Alright guys, I think it’s time we get going as well. It’s been good to meet you, Ruvyn.”

“Go where?” Ruvyn asks. “The nearest human settlement is several miles from the forest. Are you saying you’re planning on travelling there on foot?”

“We, uh, have to follow special rules. Things work a lot differently from where we come from.” You reply. “It’s a long story. Don’t worry though, we’ll manage to get back safely.”

“Also, we can teleport.” Celeste interjects. “Partially, though. It’s much faster than walking, that's for sure.”

“I see.” Ruvyn nods. He reaches into a leather knapsack at his side and pulls out an object. “Then this is the time where we part ways. Before you four go, I would like to give you this.”

Celeste accepts it. Looking closer, she sees that it’s a gemstone of some sort. The object is cubic nature, dyed crimson and emits a faint warmth, even when surrounded by an omnipresent mist. “What is this?” she asks.

“A token of my gratitude.” Ruvyn answers. “It is a gem I was intending to sell at our markets, but I believe you should have it. I’m sure it will fetch a high price at your human markets.”

“Is there anything else, Ruvyn?” Fumika asks, climbing to her feet.

“No, no more. I find myself growing tired. I think I will rest for a while. Farewell, human children.”

"See you next time." You reply.

Fumika nods, taking that as the cue to leave. She pops open a Trafuri Canister and the rest of the team gathers around her. The golden light surrounds you, dragging you and your team straight back to the first bonfire, at the entrance to the train station.

Celeste examines the gem she received, holding it between her index finger and thumb. Then she seals it inside a fist, closes her eyes and concentrates.

She then smirks, and turns to you, a flame like the nearby bonfire in her eyes.

“Magic.” She hisses.

[5:00pm, 4-Jun-2129 (SATURDAY)]

After shaking hands with Yoshino, she took you on a tour of your role as a House Assistant. It wasn’t a big deal—all she did was show you around the office, point out where everything was, give the names of the fellow FALCO House administration and more or less guide you through a brief description of your job. All it really boils down is helping the staff on school events, maybe a little posturing at meetings to give the impression that there was some semblance of authority.

It isn’t a particularly strenuous role, all things considered.

“But it’s definitely important!” Yoshino insisted when the two of you took a break on the balcony on the third floor, “Honestly, Takashi!”

She also started using your first name. You don’t mind.

“So yes, I’ll call you if there’s anything that requires our attention. You can also come talk to me at the library at night. I’m usually there on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday or Sunday nights…” She bit her lip as she said that. “Although, I’m usually busy with schoolwork to talk…”

“Maybe I should leave you alone.”

“No no no, I don’t mind studying with an underclassman, even if it’s quiet. And I’ll definitely put House stuff before anything else. If my workload is a bit light, I could even give you advice about the second year studies.”

“Well…we’ll see. I’m only on a trial period, you know.”

“I’m aware. Even so, I truly appreciate that you’ll be helping me.”

She gave you a smile at that point, and it was devoid of her usual tension. You gotta admit, even though hadn’t joined out of purely selfless reasons, it felt damn good.

“See you, Yoshino-senpai.”

“Goodbye!”

You weren’t sure what to expect at the end of classes, but you do know that shit went well.

“See you all at school tomorrow!”

“Bye.”

“Until next time.”

After parting with your friends, you returned back to your apartment to get some well-deserved dinner. You now stand in your apartment kitchen, staring into the chilly contents of the household fridge. What shall you dine on tonight? The bowl of freeze-dried curry, which looks like a mound of dirt with pickled leaves on top? The jaundiced fried rice, which has supplemented your bento box for two straight days? Or will you test your luck and cook yourself, making sure to keep a fire extinguisher next to you at all times? Perhaps this calls for a trip to the nearby fast food station, with its floors laden with scraps and salt bits, its burgers lumpy with mysterious chunks, its soft drinks not so much served as merely squeezed from the udder of mass production.

Gosh, there are so many choices, your rumbling stomach seems to groan. How on earth will you choose between them all?

You are eyeing a tray of greens and tomatoes when your smartphone decides to ring. You slam the fridge door shut and pick it up.

“Hi, nee-san.”

“Hello, Takashi!” Your older sister’s cheerful, carefree voice vibrates through the speaker, causing you to grin a little. “Aaahhh…it’s so good to hear your voice. I’m sorry for not calling you earlier. Your awesome nee-san has been very busy all the way over in Tokyo!”

“No doubt.” You say. “How’s everything over there? Cracking down on the new recruits, huh?”

“It makes me nostalgic, that’s what.” Shizuka says, happily. There’s a devious edge to her voice, present in all female members of the Wakui lineage. “You know how the rookies are…little greenhorns, fresh out of university, thinking they can blaze past basic training without a hitch. Then the instructors come along stomp them all into the dirt! Ah…my friends and I were so silly back then. But now we’re older and I can’t wait for my turn to do the same. It’s going to be so entertaining to see them try and get past the mud course!”

“Right…” You roll your eyes and smile. “Try not to traumatize anybody, okay? Kali is scary enough already.”

You think Shizuka is pouting. “Really, Takashi, what kind of monster do you take me for? I have my limits. I’m sympathetic. I’m not going to be too harsh on the rookies. At the very worst, I’ll conspire to make them skip dinner.”

“My academy staff called you a vicious, inhuman beast and they are right.” You mutter. “How’s everyone else?”

“Oh, Viola is very excited about our job and so is Daisuke. Tsugumi less so, but I think she’ll warm up to it after a few days. They say hi, by the way.” Shizuka chuckles. “Maybe after this, we can invite them all over to our place for a meal. And then—”

“You’re going to say that I should invite all of my friends over, as well, aren't you?” You finish the sentence for her, smirking as you do so. “It sounds great, but I don’t think our house can fit ten people.”

“We can always go a restaurant!” Shizuka exclaims. “The one kaa-san often took us to! I know for a fact that they support huge parties! Doesn’t that sound fun?”

It does sound very appealing. The problem is that while most of your fellow Players would be okay with this, there exists a certain computing genius who treats outings with friends with the same regard as the prospect of prison time and interrogation via waterboarding.

“Eh, I’ll think about it.” You end up replying.

“So mean…” Shizuka moans, somewhat teasingly. “You need to show your feelings, Takashi! It’s not good to bottle up your true intentions.”

“Tell that to our kaa-san.” You mutter under your breath.

“Pardon?”

“Never mind.” You reply. “Tell the rest of the guys I said hi. Uh, is there anything else you wanted to talk about?”

“Well, are you eating healthily and sleeping well?”

You recall and nod your head. “Yeah.”

“Then it’s all good! Don’t forget to turn the gas off after cooking. Also, turn on the roomba on the weekends for cleaning!”

“Got it.”

“Is there anything else you want to talk to me about?”

You pause. “Actually, I need advice on something.”

“What is it?”

“Someone I know from school has just woken up in hospital. I received the notification a few minutes ago. I think I should go and visit her. What should I do?”

“So you’re asking on how you should act while visiting? Hmmm…the first thing to do is to be polite. Be respectful to the staff and don’t forget to knock on the door before entering. Try to avoid any dangerous topics and don't give out medical advice if you're inexperienced. Other than that, just be yourself. Be the honest, kind, cute little brother that I know. Taking the time to visit someone is a wonderful blessing. I’m sure you’ll bring a smile to the face of whomever you’re seeing."

“Thanks, nee-san.”

“Oh, and if you can, bring a gift. It doesn’t have to be something expensive; it’s really there for a statement of goodwill. But it does show that you care.” Her voice trails off and you can hear muffled shouts in the background. “Dammit Daisuke, give me a sec! I'm talking to my little bro! Sorry Takashi, I’m going to be a little busy over here. I don’t have a lot of time to chat. But don’t worry, I’ll make sure to call you every day!”

You groan. “Please don’t do that. Text messages exist for a reason.”

You can imagine sticking her tongue out. “You know you love it. Goodbye, Takashi! Your cool nee-san loves you!”

“Bye, nee-san.” You pause, then mumble. “Thanks for talking to me.”

“See? What did I tell you?”

“Oh my god…”

You decide that you should go and visit Aria in the hospital. It’s the right thing to do, after all. Ha, that’s a little funny. To think that your emotional state has grown this far. You care for a girl whom you haven’t seen for almost a week. A frail, sickly girl with hair like the maiden snow and desperation in her eyes. The girl who barely spoke a word in class, hid her talent away from the world, shouted at you on the school rooftop and then ran away to hide from the academy. The lonely, pitiful, weak and the powerless. Poor, poor Aria von Wittelsbach.

Doesn't she remind you of your younger self, all the way from year six to the outset of year sixteen? The two of you could very well be feathers of a bird. It may be prudent to remember that.

Anyway, Shizuka said you should give Aria a gift. But what?

What? No, you can’t do that. That’s basically breaking and entering!

>>It’s for her sake. Takashi: Do it.

Aria didn’t ask you to do anything! Granted, she didn’t ask you to bring gifts and you’re only doing it because it’s basic courtesy, but shut up! Anyway, you’re pretty sure entering somebody’s dorm room without permission is illegal. Do you want the cops on your ass?

>>It’ll make Aria happy. Takashi: Do it.

Well, that is true. Drawing is the probably the only hobby Aria has. Removing her tools would be like ripping both her eyes from her socket. Well, maybe not that extreme but Aria is a lonely girl. And miserable. She was in so much pain back then. You’d like to do something to cheer her up.

Hang on, are you actually agreeing to this? Stop! You can’t sacrifice your own sanity for the sake of a friend!

>>Or can you?

Be reasonable, part of you speaks up, you can get her other gifts. She’ll understand your hesitance for illegal activities. Besides, a drawing book is almost as good. She might even appreciate using traditional materials.

But wait, another part of your soul cries, the tablet is practically Aria's lifeline! Now that the idea is in your head, you might as well go all out! What’s the worst that could happen?

...

You snarl and clench both sides of your heads with your hands.

This is getting ridiculous!

>>Takashi: B&E.

Turns out you don’t need to do that. Instead of acting like an out-of-touch degenerate, you politely explain the situation to the front desk manager, who is kind enough to open the door for you. The room hasn’t changed much, save for the thin layer of dust that coats the furniture. Everything is where she left it. You find the tablet lying on Aria’s bed, half-nestled in between two layers of plain blankets.

You pick it up and shove it into your empty bag. Then you bid the manager goodbye and race downstairs to the hospital.

The hospital in District 2 looms overhead like a sleeping giant. The structure is white, cuboid and with a red cross plastered to the front. Windows, arranged in neat rows and columns, display themselves on all sides of the building, some covered by curtains, others shining with light, the rest bathed in darkness. You’ve never liked hospitals, and not just because of your experiences with them. Their sterile scent of bleach, the cold hallways, the vibrating hums of the machinery and the affable smiles from the bespectacled doctors…you just don’t feel comfortable with them. Also, hospital food is universally regarded as terrible. Over a hundred years since the beginning of modern medicine, and humanity has still yet to rectify this flaw.

You wonder what Aria is doing right now. How she is feeling, or not feeling at all. Shaking your head and steeling yourself, you enter through the glass double doors.

“Hi, I want a visit a patient named Aria von Wittelsbach. Can you help me?”

The android nurse at the counter points you to the patient ward. Seventh floor, room six. The elevator goes up smoothly. Your footsteps thud and echo across the enamel floor. The doorknob is cold. The name of the room is displayed in flickering electronic print. The hallway is cold and deserted.

Your heart is pounding in its cage, gnawing against its chains.

So Intelligence and Charisma together is rolling for having the common sense to act like a normal person. Makes sense to me.
>>
You raise a fist and knock on the door. A few moments pass.

“Come in.” A weak, feminine voice calls.

>>Takashi: Enter.

The room is comparatively large, clearly intended for single use only. Double windows gaze at you from the back. Traces of hospital cleaner invade your nose. A plush couch lies in the corner, a far cry in aesthetics from the sterility of the rest of the hospital. A plasma screen TV hangs to your right, its screen black. The door hisses shut behind you. The shelves are bare. There are no gifts, no get-well cards, no bowls of chocolates and candy. It seems you are the first real visitor to his hospital room.

“Takashi…?” In the middle of the room is a large bed covered in white. White sheets, white pillow, white mattress and white frame. Sitting on that bed, dressed in a pale green pajamas, is Aria von Wittelsbach. Her skin is pale and tiredness creases itself around her forehead and cheeks. Her eyes widen in surprise when she sees you enter.

“What?” She gasps. “What…are you doing here?”

“I came to visit, what else?” You reply. You walk over to her bed. She’s staring at you with an incredulous look, one of utter astonishment. “Forget about me, though. Are you alright?”

Aria shakes her head. “In-in-influenza.” She stutters.

“Pardon?”

“What I have. And malnourishment. And not taking my medicine.” Aria mutters, glancing away from you, down at her sheets. “My fault. Stupid me.”

She looks back up at you. “Did sensei ask you? To do this, I mean?”

You look around the room. “Come and see you?”

“Yes.”

“Nah, I did it because I wanted to.” Aria’s gasps. You shrug your shoulders. “I mean, it just felt like the right thing to do, you know? You sit next to me in class, we’ve hung out together and had lunch…I’d feel like a pretty big jerk if I didn’t visit you in the hospital, hahaha…”

Your face is a mask of coolness and casualness and a mixture of everything that calm, rational people should be. But deep inside, you are blushing blood-red and banging your skull against the wall. Holy shit, could you be any more awkward? What’s with those run-on sentences? Has Kaz Inaba taught you nothing? Find a topic and stick to it, damn you!

By your emotional turmoil, your voice trails off. You and Aria stare at each other for a moment, both unsure of what to say. You scratch the back of your neck. She grips her sheets, creasing them. You fiddle with the contents of her pockets. She taps her hand against the side of her bed.

“You said…” she suddenly whispers.

“What?”

Aria frowns. It's as if her lines are struggling to escape iron bars across the insides of her mouth. “They said. The doctors. What you said when you came for me.”

Her voice trembles, fractures. “They said you said that…that I was…” Her eyes glisten, like dewdrops in the early morning. “…your f-friend. True or not? Were you lying, Takashi?”

“Well, uh…” You’re a little thrown aback by her question. “I like to think that one of my positive qualities is honesty. I’d also like to think we’re both friends. How about you?”

Again, she does not respond. Awkwardness reigns. The silence lasts for almost a minute before you freeze. Shit, you messed up. That’s what your mind is blaring at you, in gigantic three-story high alarms with tacky neon lights and ear-blisteringly awful dubstep music. The urge to dunk your head in the nearby sink is overwhelming. To take your mind off it, you sling your bag of your shoulders, laying it on the table next to Aria’s bed. From within, you take out her tablet and pass it over to you.

“Nee-san said when you visit someone in the hospital, you should give them a gift. So, uh, I got you one. It’s a bit weird, probably not what you were expecting…” You fumble with the device. With shaking hands, Aria’s takes it off you. She stares into its blank screen, as if she were a priestess reading a scripture handed down from the will of god. She does not say a word, rather she brushes her hands across the machine. “Sorry for going into your dorm room. But I knew that art is your passion. So I thought this would be the perfect gift for you. You know, I’m so glad that I decided to talk to the lady at the front desk, instead of breaking a window or something. Man, I think of some stupid stuff sometimes…”

“…”

You hear her speak.

“Why…”

Your breath screeches to a powerful halt.

“Why, Takashi…”

Aria’s shoulders are shaking. Her hands are trembling so hard the tablet threats to fall from her delicate hands. Her breath is ragged, her body shrinks into itself.

“Don’t understand…”

Something falls from her eyes. A single drop, round and soft. It lands on her lifeline, leaving a wet patch.

“I don’t understand, Takashi…”

More descend, one by one, like the autumn rain. They drench the tablet screen as they land. Hiccupping sounds echo through the hospital room.

“I yelled at you. I pushed at you. Ran away, left you alone, didn’t speak to you. So why…”

She cannot stop it, no matter how much she wishes to. Streams of tears leak from her cerulean eyes. They trickle down her pale cheeks, staining them. She sniffles over and over again, each one bringing forth more gentle tears. She raises a hand to rub off away the moisture, to steady herself, but it is futile. She sits there in her bed, sobbing to herself, shutting off the world around her. It takes all the effort in her to turn to you, and say her intentions in a voice that is shattered like a broken mosaic.

“Why are you being so nice to me?”

>“Because we’re friends, duh.”

“...I already forgave you, Aria.”

“Why?” Aria wails. “I don’t get it! I don’t understand!”

“Because we’re friends, duh.” You reply. Another sob escapes from Aria’s lips and she covers her face with her hands. You reach forward and press a hand on her shoulder. It seems to work. Her trembling subsides, just by a fraction. “Sorry, I didn’t mention it because I thought it was obvious, but I guess you needed an official declaration. I really did have fun hanging out with you. I guess I should apologize too, for what I said. I hope you can forgive me well.”

You try to smile at her. She stares up at you in wonder. “When you get out of the hospital, let’s go out for ice-cream or something.”

It’s corny as hell, and you know it, but Aria latches onto your statement like a drowning man would towards a life float. Another wave of tears comes and she reaches up to grab you by the sleeve.

“You’re not lying, Takashi?” she whispers, hoarse.

“I’m not.”

“This isn’t a dream?”

“It feels real to me.” You joke.

“Alone…you won’t leave me alone?”

“I’d be a pretty crap friend if I did.”

Her grip tightens. “Will…will you come back to visit me?”

“Uh, technically I haven’t even finished with this visit.”

Aria stares at you. Her lips tremble. Then she giggles, before coughing. She wipes her face with a tissue from a nearby box. “That…that was funny…”

“See, you’re already getting the hang of my stupid jokes. You’re pretty good, Aria. At being my friend too, I mean.” You rub the back of your head. "Man, I really don't know what I'm saying..."

She laughs again, smiling through her tears. She turns to look at you.

“Look…”

“What is it?”

“You’re crying, too, Takashi…”

You blink. “Shut up, I’m not…”

“Yes, you are…”

“It’s just…sand! Yeah, sand got in my eyes! Goddammit Aria, stop keeping cacti in your hospital room!”

“You are so crying…” She hiccups, then giggles. “Ha ha ha…”

Exams are the exact opposite of fun, but I must struggle through them nonetheless. See you all on the 29th of May, at 10:30 pm UTC.

...wait, I think I'm missing something.

...

...

...
That's right! I forgot to give you guys C. EXP for passing the INTELLIGENCE + WILLPOWER check. How could I be so stupid?

Hmm, passing such a complicated trial with a new die number demands a mighty boon. I should think carefully about this.

The mechanics document states that passing a social stat check rewards the players with C. EXP. Therefore, I must dish out an appropriate number proportionate to the difficulty of the check.

How does 1.99 sound?

Yeah, I think that's a good number. A nice one. It would make my mathematician uncle proud. Okay everyone, Takashi received exactly 1.99 C. EXP from passing the stat check. This is canon now, set in stone, carved in holy writ, set as the ultimate, utterly immutable.

I'm off to take a shower. Farewell for now.
