Many undead share themes:

Vampires drink blood, werewolves consume meat, zombies devour brains.

Furthemore we can associate them with particular emotions: vampires with lust, werewolves with rage, zombies with laziness.

Let's try to invent a new undead type. I'm a little tired of usual liches, ghosts and skeletons.

Post a part/portion of human body and an emotion, and let's will try to come with a monster that fits.

Mawmen

Hideously deformed, headless corpses. The ribcage is split open, revealing a vertical maw of ragged teeth. Mawmen move intently and wield cutting weapons. such as cleavers and knives. They eat nothing but humans, hacking up their victims and devouring them, meat and bones all. When a Mawman has eaten several meals it will regurgitate its food, which rises as a newborn Mawman within minutes.

Mawmen are possessed of a base cunning, and hunt humans as a predator would: cautious and quiet, killing swiftly, and then carrying off their meal once it is secured. Alone, Mawmen are ambushers and stalkers, but they will readily cooperate with any other Mawmen nearby. Together, Mawmen are preternaturally coordinated, forming huge mobs that act in concert to secure ever larger feasts. Such mobs are often seen on the high seas, propelling huge rafts of flotsam and jetsam with their hands, feet and makeshift paddles.

The only way to kill a Mawman is to bleed it to death. Hacking off a limb is the best option, as Mawmen do not tend to their own wounds, or those of others. Stabbing or shooting is close to useless, as Mawmen lack internal organs of any kind. Mawmen do not fear fire, they cannot drown, and despite their predatory behaviour, they do not actually need to eat to maintain their strange vitality.

The true origins of the Mawmen are uncertain. They are most commonly found in the seas and islands surrounding the wealthy city-port of Krutengarl, though there have been sightings of similar beasts in seas many miles distant. Old sailor-tales claim the Mawmen are the bodies of drowned sailors, reanimated to punish the avarice of Krutengarl, but sailors say many things.

Blood Wraith. An undead made out of a person's blood. Less powerful ones can appear as floating, red, mist-like blobs, while stronger ones can take on more elaborate shapes, sometimes even taking on the rough shape of how they appeared in life.

Their emotion is envy, because all they desire is to again have a living body of their own. To this end they will attempt to possess a living host. The lesser, more feral ones are likely to simply go for the first and best person that presents itself - or animal, even, if the blood wraith is desperate enough. The greater ones have more of their former faculties intact and are more selective, seeking out host bodies that are a decent match with their former selves.

Blood wraiths do not 'live' long after they're born, unless they manage to possess a host. Lesser ones typically last a few weeks until the blood they consist of decays, while stronger ones can live for months. Their limited lifespan is something they are acutely aware of, and it serves to drive their desperation and urgency.

I would associated zombies with gluttony.

As for laziness (sloth), I would make undead themed around phlegm / bile. Slow, bloated akin to drowned body, apathetic and mostly passive but capable of rapid outbursts against anyone who would disrupt them.

Its wool is made of fractal hairs and seems to have a life on it's own. It moves in strnge ways, creatign impossible geometric forms. watching the wool causes confusion and headaches, if you do it for too long you go crazy.

Belchbane (The Stomach):
Sometimes an evil gourmand eats more than he should. Maybe a maid goes the extra mile to dispose of the noblewoman she murdered. Perhaps a cannibal tries to swallow a baby whole on a toddy-fueled dare. Regardless, the end result is the Belchbane. The evildoer's digestive rebels from the accrued taint and rips free, killing its attached owner in a horrifyingly painful fashion. Fueled by a particularly odd kind of avarice, the Belchbane slinks its esophagus about, tasting the air for things to store in its interior - delicacies, spare change, that sort of thing. Those being stalked by a Blechbane can sometimes hear it slurping about, the clink of coin muffled by its warm, dank folds. Usually by then it's too late, as the Blechbane guns them down with a blunderbuss of a belch, shredding its prey with a blast of pennies, truffles, and bile. If outmatched, the guts will spray a noxious mix of liquid and gas before slithering away.

I'll post a few I created for a game:

Flesh miser:
Living skeleton that steals flesh and places it onto its body to make itself stronger. Builds a thick hide of powerful muscle and layers of skin and does not eat. Instead it strips flesh from those it attacks and further builds itself up. Attacks strip flesh and empower the monster if they hit unarmored parts. Wield weapons and may ornament themselves with armor, but never much; are otherwise nude. Generally human height and speed, but physically stronger and do not suffer from bleeding or other injuries associated with living creatures.

Flesh misers can only take flesh from living things, not corpses, so they capture humans and other creatures out of necessity rather than for fun. They flay these creatures alive and piece the skin and meat on themselves. They are actually quite vain and they build their flesh up in a way they find "fashionable". They also like to modify the flesh with tattoos, piercings, embroidered designs, plates of metal, fabric sewn in or attached with piercings, etc. While their skeleton still defines limb location and general form, they sense supernaturally and so may have completely different arrangements of sensory organs, for instance. Crowns of ears, eyeless faces, a beard of boneless fingers, etc. The flesh misers separate themselves socially by the degree of their flesh coverage and their material wealth. The lowest rank ones may be so thinly fleshed that they have exposed bone; something considered the ultimate faux pasfor them. The higher ranked collect "fancy" objects like magpies and build garish jury-rigged palaces in abandoned buildings.

Flesh misers are difficult to kill; they have to be physically hacked apart, at least two limbs and the head must be severed, crushed or otherwise destroyed.
>>
>>47443329
Deathmask:
Something which resembles an enormous pink-purple length of large intestine about 2 feet in diameter and 15-20 feet long. At the front it wears the head of the last sapient creature it killed, while it's tail ends in a cluster of human arms. They like to bury themselves in rubble and ambush would be rescuers, luring them with the voice of the head they wear and one of their human limbs. Powerful grapplers, using their arms and wrapping around prey like a boa constrictor, but their bodies are fragile so they'll try to stay out of a straight up fight. Dig burrows and tunnels like termites. Drawn to sentimental objects, keepsakes and things that have no worth other than meaning something to someone. Have a habit of repeating things their half devoured bodies would have said and being drawn to things related to that meal's life. Common to hear them singing together when people are far away. Hunt alone, but live in hives of 3-10.
>>
Knifechild:
At a glance appears to be a small waifish child of indeterminate gender, clothed in rags or sometimes in fine clothing that has been torn or burnt. They are small, 3 feet tall or so. They are only about as fast or strong as a child, but they are extremely robust, and seem to be insensible to pain, ignoring injuries and continuing to move as best as physically possible. They are completely immune to any sort of cutting or stabbing attack, it just stops dead on their skin, but they can be injured by any other damage. Their bodies break like human bodies, bones snapping, limbs pulping, etc, but inside their pale skin is nothing but ash, not even bones despite the sound and appearance of bones breaking when hit. The core of the knifechild is a small shriveled fetus deep in the chest. Until this is destroyed, the demon will continue to live. The knifechild has cutting touch, anything a part of its body touches will the chopped and stabbed. A finger brushing across your skin will cut inches deep, grabbing it's hand is like sticking your arm into a blender, and being embraced like falling into a spike pit. These attacks don't bypass armor, they effect whatever is touched directly, so armor is still some protection. They like to walk around recently destroyed or damaged cities and towns, waiting for someone to come and try to rescue them, and then use their touch to shred the would be savior and eat their body. They never speak.

A unique version called the Knifemother exists in the nursery. She looks similar, but appears to be closer to 15 years old and about 5 and a half feet tall. Her cutting aura works both on touch and on sight. The sight attack can only be focused on one player at a time. If she hears the name of a player, she can speak it, cutting the hp of the player in half. This attack can be used multiple times but will never actually kill straight out. Bypasses armor. But players have to speak the name in her presence for her to learn it.

>>47444115
In the game you find her laying against a smoldering willow tree in a bombed out or burnt down conservatory. There was never gonna be anything concrete but I wanted the implication (by way of the ash in the creatures and other hints) to be that she was the source of these creatures. I was also going to throw in a large portrait in a ruined building in the same area where in which she would be depicted as a living girl with her family and signs of pregnancy. The implication there being that whatever she is now is a twisted undead thing born of fire and violence which birthed these demons.

Not him, but maybe the mother is a woman who's had multiple miscarriages and is overcome with guilt to the point of killing someone or something, and the children kind of come with her?

Many squigs have internal organs. Squigs also come in many shapes and sizes.

You know how you sometimes see Orkz with their hair done up in a top-knot? That's not a hair-style. That's a hair-squig: a large worm-like squig with a bitey mouth at one end of its body, and a big tuft of hair at the other. Orkz stick them on their heads as a fashion statement.

Then there are Squiggoths: gigantic Rhinoceros-like creatures, that Orkz like to strap little fortresses onto, and then ride them into battle.

Mawmen are not "basically squigs", you myopic cretin.

>A duamont
>A duamont is the result of a trio of people agreeing and being bound by a geas (called a mont) to conduct something, lawful or illegal. If two of the people conspire to betray the third and kill him, the murdered victim can invoke the geas to its fullest potential.
>The duamont betrayers become inseperable in thought and speech, paranoia and suspicion set in whenever they forced to part.
>Eventually they two traitors are forced to take their own lives, normally and often side by side.
>It is here the true power of the mont becomes evident as the traitors become enjoined together through the infliction of the mont.
>After coming together, the two traitors turn upon each other, each blaming the other for their current state and the previous unity and comfort they got from each other is gone, instead it is by paranoia, fear and agitation.
>Their bodies often rot and are left to the elements, all save their heart wherein they hold their grief
>Constantly bickering and blaming the other for their state, the only way to 'kill' the duamont is to bring it to terms with betrayal they wrought.

I have some neat ideas for zombies:

Necrotic Ooze:
>The culmination of zombie synthesis. These amorphous, vaugley gelatinous creatures are the result of thousands of pounds of zombified flesh congealing into a singular entity. Often found weeks later at the sight of a particularly brutal battle, these purposeless monsters emit a tell-tale shriek when confronted, and produce projectile sputum that carries the zombie virus. Their greasy, black appearance is a result of excessive rot, and contact with these creatures can cause ordinary weapons to degrade far faster than usual. Do not allow these creatures near water, as they contain deadly pathogens capable of spreading and causing massive damage to local ecosystems. In legend, necromancers refer to these creatures as "progenitors of rot" or "envoys of entropy" because it is said that a particularly powerful necrotic ooze possesses the ability to treat all nearby zombies as extensions of its "consciousness".

Zombified Carapace
>Under the control of particularly adept necrotic ooze, zombies possess the ability to "form" together into a singular entity. Part biological, part black magic, a zombified carapace can take many forms, most notably large writhing bone towers, and powerful armored brutes. A zombified carapace is more of a broad descriptor for a type of symbiotic relationship than a particular zombie, however they are distinct from other symbiotic relationships as they generally possess a robust exoskeleton and strong regenerative properties. Thankfully, without the stewardship of a necrotic ooze, these creatures generally cause more collateral damage than they're worth, as a result of possessing limited independent logical capabilities.

>>
>>47445804
Post-human Manifesto:
>Little is known about the purpose of zombies, and even less is known about their origins. Legend states that there is an entity, lurking deep within the earth, capable of immense power. Evolved beyond the need for physical apparatus, the Post-Human Manifesto is capable of possessing and corrupting any biological construct, and often all of the constructs within a given area relative to their size. When corrupted, biological constructs slowly become retrofitted into purposeful entities capable of limited individual thought, and direct manipulation through a telepathic link with the Post-Human Manifesto. Corruption can rage from changes in mood and opinion to complete physical remolding. When directly confronted, the Post-Human Manifesto appears to be a slick liquid that can defy conventional laws of physics, often manipulating its own amorphous structure for advanced offensive and defensive maneuvers. As an immortal entity, it can never "die", in a conventional sense, rather upon significant damage to its structure it goes dormant, condensing the remaining portions of itself into an infinitely dense black orb so it can sufficiently regenerate. It's believed that the Post-Human Manifesto is powered by entropy, and is slowly seeking to zombify and teraform the world for an unknown cause.

Chit Chats (Or Click Clacks)

A horrid condition that begins while the victim is still alive. Their muscles will spasm as such that they cannot rest and most always be moving. When when standing still their muscles will twitch violently, some not even able to accomplish that much.

Their distintive name comes from when a victim of this condition tries to speak, their jaw muscles spasm causing their teeth to clatter together as if they were shivering.

Most victims inevitably bite their tounges as a result and even though they "Die" they their withered muscles still spasm violently only now they put their violent spasm to just moving quickly and attacking potential prey that they try and fail more often then not to eat.

What's odd is that EVERYONE knows that zombies just eat brains, and yet NO media depiction of them actually go with that, and just have zombies more walking undead who eat flesh in general or just seem to exist to spread their zombification.

Imagine a race of undead whose schtick is that they're REAL problem isn't experiencing the decay of their body but the slow death of their mind via alzeimers type mental problems... unless they eat some human brains, which keeps them "alive" as "themselves" and sentient for a while... until they start forgetting things, getting confused doing things they're usually so deft and competent at.

I love Krasues/Penanggalans. The idea of them stealing the body of someone else as a parasite to hide in plain sight is cool for something designed to be scary or unsettling. I've considered a necromancer storing the dangling organs in jars or urns full of fresh meat, with the heads sticking out of the top, like some crazy mad scientist's lab of glass tubes storing experiments. I've considered them also possibly changing faces with the new body, so that they're even harder to recognise and discover.

Those archetypes are very "crosshared" on this and that mythology.

For example, being a werewolf didn't meant only looking like a hybrid of man and beast, but behaving like one.

One of the dreaded wolf behaviors was digging up (badly buried I guess) human corpses during winter.

So a "werewolf" could be someone which digs and eats human bodies, perhaps becomes cursed to 'be what he eats' by God, and that veers into the middle-eastern ghoul.

-

Also, reading up on mythology, you find things like bake-kujira, a ghostly whale skeleton, which hardly seems generic. It couldn't be speared. Imagine hunting undead Moby Dick, and you can't spear it.

I once made up a kind of revenant which is very much a shadow man, a ghost driven by the instinct to be something again. It would possess people's nightmares and use their soul as fuel to made said nightmare physical.

It could have literally any imaginable appearance, and only be slain through a voyage into the dream world.

There are also the flesh golems looking like necromorph spidertaurs making webs out of tendons and stitching a lot of flesh into a gigantic undead colossus.

I hope that adds something to the thread

Ghoulworm

If a ghoul gets trapped in a crypt or a chasm for long enough, it will eventually begin to starve. The half-undead cannot die of thirst, but their unnatural hunger for flesh is also a physical need. The howls of a dying ghoul are said to be piteous, perhaps designed to lure the kind-hearted to their doom.

But if a ghoul cannot feed, it turns on itself. It first devours its legs, and crawls on its arms in its prison, scuttling with uncanny haste. After a few more years, the arms too vanish, leaving behind a hideous, insane creature - a ghoulworm.

The ghoul's skin becomes calloused from constant scraping on stone or ash, and strange pale liquids seep from its cracked hide. Desperation also forces the ghoul's mouth unnaturally wide, and long confinement widens its eyes. If some catastrophe unleashes it upon the world, a ghoulworm thinks only to feed, abandoning stealth for rabid gorging.

Some larger ghoul colonies deliberately create such monsters, turning their apostates or cripples into drooling, gnashing berserkers. These ghoulworms are pierced with chains and studded with armour plates, and inch along the ground with showers of sparks and the scrape of metal on bone.

I don't know if there's a preexisting monster like this but ever since I was a kid the idea of someone literally turned inside out has freaked me out.
Don't know how that could be incorporated story wise or how it would differentiate itself combat wise but on a very superficial level the idea of the human anatomy reversed creeps me out

I'm trying to picture a creature that is anatomically a human being that is turned as accurately inside out as possible and it really isn't making any damn sense or coming together well at all.

Trying to organize what is most insidish to go out and what's most outsidish to go in is a bitch and a half. I'm guessing the core would be either skin sinews or densely bundled hair/horn. I'm guessing the surface would be exoskeletal bone covered in greasy marrow fat or maybe even coated in bare nerve fiber.

The balancing act hurts my head.

Incarnate Soul

Souls drawn from the immaterial, spiritual realm and incarnated in the material realm. Put simply, a soul given physical form it should not have. Resembles a fleshy, pallid, genderless humanoid. Hairless and its veins stick out all over its body. It seems slick with some kind of viscous fluid. Where it has eyes there are only the impression of eyes, grown over with a thin layer of skin. Incarnate Souls are pitiful and wretched creatures that should not be, retching and gasping as they stagger about.

Incarnate Souls cannot be killed. Although physical, they retain the immortal nature of the soul. Damage done them simply doesn't seem to register. Blades slice through them, axes cleave through them, spear impale them and maces crush sections of them, but when the weapon is removed, the body is wholly unharmed. It is akin to attacking water. Magic and elements seem to have more of an effect, fire and lightning singes but quickly flakes away, as does frost, arcane energies can stagger and momentarily paralyze Incarnate Souls, doing the most damage to the bodies which can be seen reforming and very rarely, retaining a look of deformation. The only way to be rid of an Incarnate Soul is to restrain and trap them, or perform an exorcism ritual which will utterly annihilate it from existence.

Incarnate Souls seek to enter human beings. A Soul will seek out a victim and attempt to literally enter inside them, usually but shoving their slick arms down the throats of victims and choking them to death. Sometimes they try and rip a victim open to get inside them. Souls seem to completely ignore corpses.

Tree of fortune's folly

Created by a necromancer and alchemist attempting to synthesize the philosopher's stone, the tree of fortune's folly is a peach tree reanimated and alchemically modified. While ostensibly a success, all but the most depraved beings would ever consider growing a tree of fortune's folly, for instead of turning lead into gold, the tree feeds on the blood and souls of all slain near it for a similar process. Every time the tree consumes a soul an is watered with the blood of a victim, a single blood red peach grows on the tree within one month. Any who picks this fruit must be careful not to become the tree's next meal, as the fruit is quite toxic. Should someone manage to safely open the fruit, they will find the the pit of the fruit is made of solid gold.

>The vine-men
Some say that lost explorers who perished in the deep southern jungles will be overtaken by a type of vine indigenous to the area. If said victim also harbors hatred on the world due to their condition (or they resent being abandoned), they will become Vine-men - a mass of vines roughly shaped like a man. They will move through the jungle on treetops, looking for other explorers to ambush. They will unravel their man-shape and become a thick copse of vines, mostly over the would-be victims' heads, and they will slide and snap their necks. Should they be discovered, though, they will drop their whole vine network on the hapless victims, strangling them with the vines - and afterwards, another Vine-men will rise from the deceased's remains.
Contrary to rumors, fire does not set Vine-men aflame. At least, not if you don't cut it first. Another way to destroy Vine-men is to look for their vine-cores, usually their skulls where each tendril of vine originates. Destroy that, and you destroy the undead.

Bloodwraiths are a common folk myth in many regions. The stains of violent crime must be cleansed. Soil that is tainted by the blood of a murder victim must be dug up and carried to consecrated ground, or scattered into the sea.

If any blood remains on the site of the murder, the victim's soul must remain tethered there forever. The taint only grows with time. Accidents are sure to follow, grisly accidents that spill blood, strengthening the spirit. Crimes too, as men are driven mad by their own hearts conspiring against them.

Once it has fed enough, the wraith begins to walk the earth, usually at night, or just before sunset. Sights of passion, violent or loving, are said to enrage the wraith.

Most horribly, unless the original spot of earth is cleansed, and victims claimed by the wraith are doomed to join its mindless, hopeless wandering.

The movie "Death Becomes Her" featured "vanity zombies" basically. Men and women obsessed with halting the aging process so they drink an immortality serum which stops them from aging or dying.

Injuries, however, don't heal, and no matter how severe they are, will never kill you.

This means that at some point you're bound to become some kind of horrible freak as even small wounds accumulate, ironic considering the motivation for becoming immortal in the first place.
>>
>>47449985
Kinda makes it fun to envision an undead built in layers. Would be fun to see if instinct drove "it" to tear each other to shreds to get to the sighted victim or if instinct would lead to an impressive synchronization of motions.

A flesh golem wrapped around a skeleton, with a blood sludge pumped into its veins and lymph portals, maybe with some kind of disembodied brain re-embodied inside the skull.

Wrap the whole thing in a set of animated armor for good measure, and let 'er loose!

Was feeling writey and melodramatic, so here you go. Pic unrelated

"Listen child. You mustn't cross through the cemetery again. Eye know you have heard the tales the old wives tell about shades and rev'nants, and eye know you see them for their folly. You're a smart young lad. But just because those yarns are naught but crow's gossip doesn't mean that the old green hillside is safe for a boy to travel. Heed the headstones, child.

Were you never struck curious why our ancestors saw needful to mark the grounds with stone? A sign can be made of wood. There's one such fixed afore the shop, yes? And the remains are weighed with a man's height of earth, so you needn't worry about stumbling on a bit of old Jack. No, the stones are much more than that, my boy. A headstone is a grinding of the finest smooth stone to be found in a week's travel. Only pure stone unadulterated with the other elements will do. The hands of the dead do not leave when the eyes do, child, and must be sussed out."

"What? No, not the eyeballs! The eyes! The eye when you say 'You and eye' or 'Eye want, eye need'! The gods take the best and worst of a man when he goes, the left eye to toil in penance and the right eye to revel until the Final Hour rejoins them. But where does that leave the rest? The hands, not the mitts, as eye hear you starting to ask, but as in 'His lordship handed down judgement' and the feet as in 'Won't you foot the cost?' and the stomach as... you understand now, eye take? Where do those go? What god would lay claim them? Any old Jack not headed by stele is wont to have his bits run amok! Imagine it! Well, you wouldn't see much, not today at least. Give it time and and a little trade-craft! Never mind, grandchild.
>>
>>47450731

But old stone is still kissed by the breath of those who blew the world into being from the firmament like the gaffers down the road would a bead from sand. The strays of the forsaken body can't help but be wicked up into the stone like the grains of sand that melt into the glass, and there they stay, fermenting away, awaiting Final Hour when all stones will become dust and the great arch of the sky itself will slough away back into the firmament of which it was wrought. UNLESS SOME GALUMPHING CLOD CRACKS ONE!!!

When eye was but an apprentice, some town boys became rowdy in the cemetary. Eye wasn't there for this part, but it seems in their scuffling, they upended and nicked a headstone. Just a nick. A chip the size of your milktooth, perhaps. At first. But the stone was the resting spot of a vicious old Jack with hands known for hitting his woman and shoulders that no friend would lean on. A sliver can be very sharp, and when it wishes, it will end up under a fingernail.
>>
>>47450755

The boy in question found himself grabbing the stone with a bloody hand and bashing his face, then the rest of himself, over and over, until the lad was a ruined mess of broken bones and there was more stone lodged in him then out. When he could no longer muster the strength to continue, he slowly choked down the rest of the gravel he had made. Of course, within moments of first blood, children had run for parents. By the end, no-one had the stomach to stay and witness, so when the first of the mothers arrived, no-one could say how the broken lad had vanished.

My Father and eye tracked the blood to a cliff, but could not follow over. It was not until three seasons later when town lasses began dissapearing whilst a-gathering that we cought up with the blighted thing. It was in a cave, with a trio of girls it had taken, each bloodied and swolen with the pebbles it had disgorged into them. It was trying to escape into them, you see. The first lad it had taken was long dead, and had rotted to the point he could no longer carry it. All of them had to be burnt until even their bones were dust, and that dust baked into clay, and that clay fired into brick and that brick lined with lead and buried at the bottom of a lake. So child, please please please for the love of all the gods that look up at us from the sky, do not go into the cemetary until you are ready to take up our funary trade."

Vengeful

The aspects of souls that were sacrificed to evil/dark beings on other planes, that still linger the temples and ruins and cursed places where they originally died.

They're non-physical entities that appear as illusions, and are little more than the memories of the world, as remembered by the souls wherever they are. The presence of living beings animates their presence, and are most visible at dusk, standing idly by as watchers until the visitors have fallen asleep. They then use this period of vulnerability to taunt and harass them in their sleep, giving them hellish visions in the hopes of weakening their subject to the point where they can attach themselves to the spirits of the individual under the desperate hope that they can be "pulled" from their torment, much like someone who is drowning pulls and pushes the one trying to help them under the surface.

The Begotten

It's a sign of hubris in parents to name a child before its first birthday. Sometimes, the gods take such children before their time, to teach us humility. Sometimes, they leave the Begotten behind.

A Begotten is harmless looking. It's got two arms, two legs, two eyes, a nose and a mouth, like it used to, aye, but it's all wrong. The skin's a little too clammy. The eyes stare a little too much, and start to drive you mad with their awful vacancy. It doesn't take long for the parents to realize that their child is dead, and that the thing wearing its skin isn't human.

Some rare folk can stand the sight of it. Most can't. And that's how the Begotten kills. When some poor fool succumbs to its cries, and tries to put the thing out of its misery, every wound it places on the Begotten is revisited on his hide. You cut the thing on the limb, and an identical one opens on yours. Bash it in the head, and it's like the gods threw an invisible boulder on your skull. Some sort of crazed hysteria comes over the Begotten's attacker, then, and no matter how many wounds appear on his flesh, he keeps attacking, until he dies from under his own blows.

And the Begotten? It feeds on the despair, on the awful hate of it all. Its skin smoothes over. Its bones knit back together.

If you leave the thing alone, eventually it'll crawl off. No one knows how they survive on their own -- maybe on the despair they cause in others.

All I know is, if, when you're walking through the woods, you hear a cry on the wind... keep walking.

I think I got a good one

The Heartless, It looks like a human, talks, walks and everything ealse that a human can do. But, if you were to get near one, you can only hear a *Bump bum, bump bum, bump bum* They would look at you with extremely shallow eyes, looking in pain, or wanting it. They would then slowly come torwards you, crying, and sobbing heavily. Then the sound would get louder, and more fast pace, as it walks torwards you. When it finally reaches you, the sound would fade, and it would put its right hand against your chest, and his left over his, and start squezzing. It would still continue to cry, and the sound would fade even more, but it would continue to squeeze even more, until pop. The *bump bum* then stops, and it stops crying, and the last thing you see is its right hand grasping your heart, and trying to put it inside it's chest, inevitably failing and just turning it into mush. Then it crys again, until another person comes by.

The sadness of loss is what drives this creature, maybe it steals the hearts of others so it can feel compassion once again, or it may be a mad fool who thinks he can regain what he has loss.

It's more of a.....I don't even know what it is. Maybe a construct?

Now if the stomach came from something like, I don't know, a Ghoul, or a corpse, or something, then it would count as undead.

>>
>>47463466
No that was some retarded reinvention.

Ghouls are actually one of two things one being if they are living a shapeshifting predatory humanoid with magical powers with a taste for manflesh. Who without their magic are hidious but with it are often enchantingly beautiful(which is how they lure prey).

The undead variety are according to lore crave flesh because when they were alive they were cannibals and so as punishment when they died they reanimated as a ghoul.

Everything else besides those two are reinventions of ghouls and NOT historically accurate. The living version btw is native to the middle east while the undead ghoul is of European origins.

I got an idea.

>Void Men
>Borne from unlucky cosmonauts vented out into space without a space suit.
>They appear horribly disfigured by the extreme environment of space, appearing as desiccated, mummified corpses with the skin black as the void and stretched taut over their bones
>They possess long, spindly limbs - typically stretching out to the point of becoming claws and appear gangly at their full height
>If you are unlucky to come across one, they will use their claws to try and attach themselves to the hull and are very fond of attacking astronauts performing EVA
>Often ambushing them and severing their O2 lines/tethers, if they possess one, and spacing them as they once were.

>They will often try to force themselves inside a space craft to get at the crew inside and are especially fond of de-pressurising compartments and sabotaging space suits and life support.
>Despite this they are very fragile and will break apart under sufficent force. They are primarily ambush predators and prefer to surprise victims or render their living space unhabitable.
>>
My only idea about undead was trying to make skeletons make sense.

And by making sense I mean instead of having them be walking corpses, make them floating contact telekinetic (Is this a thing? Basically, being able to move around anything that touches you without grasping) sculls that drag around the rest of their bones underneath to increase their reach.

>Shadowcats
Incorporeal Spirits of cats that hunt the lesser undead that might spontaneously appear do to ambient necrotic energy that sometimes causes skeletal rats, zombie crows and ghost roaches to appear.
Shadowcats often haunt the graveyards where their masters are interred and are said to sleep against their headstones.
Shadowcats appear to look exactly like a cat but only exists on a 2-Dimensional surface like a living shadow.
A sudden burst of light will launch a shadowcat far away as if from a gust of wind on a normal cat, and a bright torch is enough to keep the creatures as bay is so desired.
Although solitary and territorial, sometimes shadowcats will band together to hunt larger undead, whatever it may be.
Every graveyard probably has at least one shadowcat to it, but they usually only allow themselves to be seen by good-hearted people. Some consider it "rude" to talk about seeing shadowcats, because either you are gloating that you are "a good person" or you are lying and the statement means nothing.
Churches near graveyard might be haunted by ancient shadowcats that have protected the holy grounds for hundreds of years and are often thought to be the old pets of local saints.

Join my campaign anon, and you'll find out. It's actually an elaborately constructed series of hallucinations in which they keep re-living one or more real or fictional situation that feeds into their insecurities (i.e. a king who struggled to stay in power IRL would be in an endless court session, having each and every one of his enemies executed over and over again; a woman who was abused by her lover IRL would perhaps dream of being unconditionally loved and worshipped 24/7 etc.

>Marrow Lord
>A vaguely humanoid figure made of oily off-yellow, meat like material, it shambles in a shaky, whispy way
>When a Marrow Lord meets a person, it will form it's body into thin, drill like tendrils and bore directly into the bone of it's victim, injecting itself inside their bones. The Marrow Lord will proceed to tunnel throughout the victim's whole skeletal system, devouring the persons marrow into itself. The victim is alive and aware of this the entire time. It takes a full week for the Marrow Lord to finish it's feeding.

>Jaw Biter
>A curse-like undead. When a person is cursed to become a Jaw Biter, their jaw will begin to chatter uncontrollably. It will be unnoticeable at first, but soon enough the chattering will get stronger and more wild. The bottom teeth will harden and begin to grow longer, until the top teeth start to become damaged from the chattering. When the top teeth have been completely shattered and worn away, the final stage of the curse happens, and the bottom teeth will suddenly grow upwards at a rapid pace, sheering off chunks of the victims head. The teeth will continue to grow until the, now dead, victim is forced to bend over backwards.
>The Jaw Biter will mindlessly attack people with it's massive 'shovel' of teeth.

So old Sven seemed to die in that blizzard we had the other week, got caught in an avalanche but he walked into the long house a few days later, looking a bit ragged and thin mind you, was really quiet and standoffish too when I said hi to him during the feast, but better quiet than dead eh?

Lostling

When a woman kills herself from grief while pregnant with the mans child she carries sometimes the grief can merge with necromantic magic in the area. This only happens if she is buried in a cemetery with active undead. What happens is the fetus continues to grow subsisting on the fluids of the mother until nothing is left over the course of a few months. There is rarely enough to grow into a full child, but the undead magics keep it animated. When there is nothing left to grow on, the lostling will begin to cry out. This noise is usually too quiet to be heard from a great distance, but any who hear it will be filled with unimaginable feelings of sorrow and grief. If anyone tracks down the location of the lostling and digs them up, most of the time it ends there, as sunlight breaks the curse and the lostling dies. If however, it is released at night, the lostling will latch onto anything nearby and begin to burrow into their skin. Once they are fully encased once more, they will again start to feed on the fluids of the new host.

From this point i imagine there might be another version as it ages, but this was as far as i got.

Yeah, so unborn child, with grief as the emotion.

Too "edgy"?

The souls of deceased infants who are denied proper burial can never rest, and yet they lack the sapience to understand their own existence. In this way they become parasitic undead that latch onto those in poor health. Their spirit is bent into the shape of a great maggot, blind, deaf, mute, unable to communicate with the world except by their predatory habits.

Without meaning to they begin to feast on their victim's memories, yet without a body or a mind these memories grant only momentary respite to the aborted undead before whetting their hunger for more. The process of completely swallowing a person's mind can last anywhere from a year to a month, but the signs are always the same. The victim will inevitably become bedridden and lack vitality before descending into madness, their days are spent between hours of restless sleep, long periods of confusion and short bouts of helpless clarity. The final weeks of a victim's life has them regress to a child-like idiot innocence before finally passing away.

Generally speaking, victims will suffer two fates. There are those who will be killed by whatever weakened them when they encountered the infant curse, their souls will pass away into the afterlife safely, if a bit bruised. Then there are those who hang onto life until the their memories are completely devoured. Their minds and souls empty, they soon die afterwards and are spawned as new curses seeking their lost memories to warm themselves up.

Besides their memory devouring habits, curses such as these are accompanied by hallucinatory phenomena, the result of the devoured memories phasing out into the surroundings to be experienced by those who can actually interpret them. In sanitariums and hospitals these curses can easily kill dozens before being noticed.

There's some evidence that "changelings" were actually babies with Downs syndrome or other, non-fatal but still disabling abnormalities. Graveyards and contemporary records seem to support this.

The logic is that the "fey" swapped your baby out for a "changeling". The "false" baby just wasn't quite right, somehow. You could try and get the fey to take it back by leaving it in the forest or burning it in a fire.

Basically, just a guilt-removal mechanism for mothers, wrapped in tradition. That isn''t /your/ baby, with that strange cracked skin or those weird, distorted eyes. It was a changeling! Your baby was taken.

Golden Men

The spirits of those who in life craved wealth above all else, hoarding it, and who eventually died surrounded by it. Appearing as golden skinned humanoids they are sometimes mistaken for golems, but they have a greedy, calculating squint about their features, and long grasping fingers.
Although intelligent, Golden men are driven to acquire gold at any cost, yet the curse that creates them also causes any that they touch to transform slowly to lead - the inabiity to sate their unnatural avarice tends to slowly drive them mad. The one exception to their curse will be a single coin, ring or other valuable item, which acts as a kind of phylactery. Should the Golden Man be slain, it's spirit will become imprisoned in the item, which will pass on the curse to the next person who claims it as theirs, eventually turning them into a new Golden Man

Tents

>Souls who have been stricken with loss, these figures look much like a tent, with excess flesh growing down their arms and fusing to the sides of their bodies, they often stand with the support bone supporting the front of their head, as if leaning on a cane. They always keep their 'flaps' closed over their heads, where the head constantly looks down, looking very much like a tent-like structure.

Anyone who enters it finds warm shelter, but as soon as they discover the face blinklessly staring at them or the pulsating organs which surrounds them, they often try to escape, and when it realises you do not wish to stay with it, it often attempts to crush and devour you, or in some rare cases, sexually violate you as well. In the odd chance where you do not realise or do not mind the grotesque tent, you find an immortal tent which provides food, liquids and warmth for as long as you live, although the food are it's 'excess' organs' and the liquids some sort of bodily fluid.

I guess I'll share my old idea for mixing the concepts of the undead with Elves and Dwarves.

Don't ask me where I heard it, but apparently the concept of both elves and dwarfs originates in ancestor spirits. The dead were placed in barrow tombs, and the spirit or breath of the dead left the body to become elves - or at least one sort of elf, the tall, wispy, nature-lover elf that wanders in the glens and meadows. Meanwhile the body blackens, and becomes a scary and calloused thing that jealously guards its burial treasure from the living. This is the origin of wraith and wights, but also of dwarfs. Dwarf comes from an old word for door, or door-guardian/keeper. You have to beat the dwarf to pass through the threshold and recieve the sacred/mystical items of your ancestors.

A third type of elf or dwarf exists, which resembles the elves that follow Santa Claus or common lawn gnomes. These represent young participants in coming of age rituals who, if successful, are lead by a sorceror to collect the mystical items. They have both beaten a dwarf, and in doing so are blessed with the spirit of the elves - the good of the ancestor who sees the child as worthy, as they could beat the bad. This is why there are two very different types of elf. It might also explain how dwarves came to be seen as short - but it may also simply be to symbolise that they are low - earthen, dirty, jealous, lurking underground.

I'd implement this into a fantasy setting by making typical elves the conglomerate of souls. These souls represent the highest ideals and virtues of the deceased, and so elves are lofty, pure and aloof. Dwarves I'd change radically so they are short purely because of hunches and crooked limbs, rather than being stunty, representing the decay in the tomb. They have an at-times comical yet genuinelly ill-tempered and vicious quality, and are obsessed with materialism.

I'll try my hand at creating one.

The Spectral Revenant

A powerful sub-type of the Revenant, the Spectral Revenants are the souls of warriors that were either backstabbed by their comrades or were the ones who in life betrayed their comrades only to come back as beings that are between spectral and material.

These Revenants either walk the face of the earth looking for those who backstabbed them or are damned to aimlessly walk it for their treasonous behaviour for all eternity until someone with enough power can banish them back to the underworld. In the case of the first they sometimes mistake people for those who betrayed them and lash out at them with full force.

The appearance of a Spectral Revenant is that of a zombie-like being with visible elements of his skeleton poking out from his body or blatantly visible, usually clad in a patchwork of armor, clothes and bones they scavenged over the years of their ventures. The undead also emanate a strange aura that attracts lesser undead to them, making them natural leaders of the living dead. Sometimes certain Spectral Revenants are seen without their lower jaws, and each one has characteristic glowing embers in place of their eyes.

In life these undead were skilled warriors, but in death they became incredibly lethal due to their supernatural nature enhancing them and the fact that they are indestructible against anything but the most powerful of spells, weapons or divine powers. Non-magical weapons simply go through them like in case of a ghost, and magical weapons do little harm to them due to their resistances. And even then there is a chance that a banished Revenant can come back if his will is strong enough for him to escape the underworld and animate his or someone else's remains.

Another feature is that they can leave their bodies and scout out the surrounding as spectres when they plan to exact vengeance or to cause havoc. They might be undead, yet they still have their personalities intact.

>>
>>47485811
This is what can make a difference when one meets such a powerful undead.

Some of the Spectral Revenants can be reasoned with, yet it depends on if they were betrayed or were the ones who betrayed.

Those who were betrayed can be reasoned to even forfeit their quest for vengeance if their targets are not even among the living or was banished back when he was a Revenant. This is important since there were cases where one went after the backstabber's family who were not involved in all of this.

The ones who betrayed do not want to listen since they lack the honor of the vengeful ones and are pleased with their powerful forms.

Sometimes there are confrontations between two such Revenants which results in a terrifying battle where the vengeful one will try to drag the traitorous one to the underworld for torment.

For example, a guy who dies with a bad karma becomes undead, and his task is to go to people's house when there's a death in the family, take the body away, prepare it for the burial, and take care of the grave once the guy is buried.

And then you have the insane caretakers who did their time but don't want to die because they fear that this one grave here will be forgotten if they die too, and it was such a tragedy because she was so young.

Warcraft 3, definitely. One of the most powerful builds in the game is flooding your opponent with hundreds of skellingtons. It was the game that gave me my love of all things spoopy.

Yeah but warwraft is more about corruption and monsters than real undeads.
The crypt fiend aren't exactly undead, neither are the gargoyles. And the Lich doesn't even have a phylactery.

But if it rips itself out of a person, the person dies.

The stomach's full of evil, like negative energy? I dunno, I'm too busy banging a hot devourer chick to care.

How would you make an undead creature out of a Teratoma?
>>
>>47491263
well the crypt fiends actually are undead just of another race, you are correct though that gargoyles arn't. Functionally litches have a building as a phylactory, or in said building.

While we're on the topic of undead babies, I had an idea for a type of "benevolent" undead. In a setting where magic relies heavily on names, there is a custom for couples to hold for their unborn children a "proper naming" ceremony as soon as their aware of the pregnancy. The baby's full name is decided and made "official". From the day of the ceremony, they and their neighbors/relatives refer to the growing unborn child by the proper name as often as possible. Basically, this results in everyone's "true" name being the name their parents gave them.

In the case of a child being miscarried or stillborn, couples are encouraged to conceive again as soon as possible. The second child is given an identical name and identical "proper naming" ceremony as the first. The result of this is that the second child becomes immune to curses and hexes, as the identification of the target is too ambiguous, or the nasty magic just seems to go "elsewhere" (the universe and its many spirits do not care about petty human concerns like clothing or hair, but a Proper name, given through the ceremony by those continuing their bloodline is a Big Deal).

If these protected individuals are viewed with aural or spectral sight, you'd see a ghostly, malformed fetus connected to them by a spiritual umbilicus tangled around the protected person. This unborn ghost babby tags along with its sibling, ambiguously sapient but full of brotherly/sisterly affection, growing larger and more mutated with each hex it absorbs.

Maybe if one reaches roughly the size it would have been as a living adult, something special happens. That would require someone to have been targeted many times by a not small number of determined and malicious spellcasters, though.

Legends speak of the town under the mountain. I went there once. What I saw was horrible. Not on a physical level, but on a psychical one.
Beasts are dwelling there, you know. Some say they used to be human, but after decades wasted living in caves, they are as human as an ape would be.
Still, I have to admit, most of their emotions are human-like. For example, they are self-conscious, to a degree, of their own terrible fate, and thus are extremely aggressive. I regret to say I had to kill a few of them in self-defense. And yet, despite the horror of their condition, they are not ready to disappear, and they seek to maintain their race alive, by the most ignominious way. By night, some of them will try to leave the caves, and run the country, looking for maidens to abduct and drag underground.
I cry as I write down the horrible fate that awaits these poor souls : forced to wear attires described as "maid outfit", and brainwash into watching simple entertainment called "anime".
Once the poor girl is as insane as the foul beasts, then the breeding begins, and immediately fails, as these beasts, while humans in emotions, lack any knowledge of sex.
And this is how they increase their numbers : the newly brainwashed maiden quickly turn into a new foul, insane beast, self-concious of her own horrible fate, wishing for death, and yet fleeing it.
Such is a fate worse than death. I can only pray for god's mercy to strike these poor souls down.

>Mechslave
Cybernetics are a wondrous thing, capable of enhancing the bearer in all sorts of ways. Connected to a single person in large numbers, they can even form a network amongst themselves, coordinating their actions ever more effectively... regardless of the being that eventually becomes trapped inside a web of data, and a shell of advanced machinery.
A mechslave forms when a person's cybernetics network with one another to such a great extent that the user's mind is unwillingly drawn into it, forming a sentience that is part natural being and part spontaneously-formed A.I., with the end result of something akin to a mechanical zombie. The mechslave seeks to replace as much of its living flesh with machinery as it can, and its obsolete machinery with more advanced tech, to sustain an eternal existence, but moves in an uncanny, over-efficient fashion that puts people off assisting it. Whilst it is capable of somewhat normal interaction with others, and a small few can be rehabilitated to restore the user's mind and control, most are swiftly made aware of their own unwelcomeness, and so resort to forcibly removing the cybernetics from other cyborgs or even other mechslaves, often lethally depending on how integrated they are, before attempting to install them into itself with varying degrees of success.
Mechslaves tend to be obvious no matter how advanced a state they're in; the main difference lies in psychology. A mechslave with comparatively many biological components left will still possess some human desires, needs, urges, tempering the drive to upgrade itself over time, but also hampering its efficiency of movement somewhat; a mechslave reduced to no or almost no artificial components will have long since optimised beyond human concerns, only ever seeking new components to upgrade and occasionally maintain itself, with not a thought for anything beyond this.

The heart is a fickle beast. Even more so when diseased. When death is near all men seek an escape. The Animulus virus was a recent discovery, its origin a complete mystery. Infection is easy, contact with blood. Once infected there is no cure, you are Animulus. Symptoms include a irregular and chaotic heartbeat, extreme inflamation of the complete circulatory system leading to easy visual identification of a Animulus through the veins being brightly visible through the skin. Other side effects of the disease include little to no nerve function, superhuman strength and regeneration. These effects have lead to many poor, persecuted and terminally ill people to see the disease as a cure and actively seek infection. They are wrong. Because of the altered blood flow the brain is eventually effected. Infected humans have been recorded as undergoing mild to extreme personality shifts. Specifically Pride. Animulus begin seeing themselves in a greater and greater light slowly loosing all regard for all other life. Infected have a grace period of around one to six months before a complete shift from original personality to a prideful psychotic killer. As the disease is in its infancy we have been unable to ascertain the accuracy of the rumours that Animulus are "Immortal". More research needed.

Side-notes:
Of the seven infected I have studied all have a perverse and sexual interest in blood.

It is my belief that all infected should be regarded and called as such. As the personality shift takes hold the infected gain pleasure from being called Animulus. They see the name as a title of honour.

So something like:
>"I AM ANGRY"
>undead passes and OMNOMNOM you
>"I feel hollow."
>"I can no longer feels anything."
>"I want to kill myself but I don't have the energy."
>"Moving is a bother."
>"I'll just wait death here."

I think there was an asian movie about that. Ghosts that attack people and make them apathic. Except that either they kill themselves or get burned into walls.

Dunno if anyone's posted something similar but here goes:

Revenant of Agony

Sometimes when a being dies in unendurable agony, their pain may become a driving force behind their return to unlife as a Revenant of Agony. These undead are fueled by the pain inflicted on them in their final moments and are driven to inflict this agony on the living in an attempt to purge it from themselves.

Their primary attack is the Gaze of Agony, a mind attack that overwhelms their victim with the agonies of the Revenant's final moments before the Teeth and claws finish the job.

The Revenant appears as a semi - corporeal skeleton dressed in ragged remains of the clothes they wore in life, their eyes are two shining green orbs above a mouth full of razor-sharp fangs, their arms are tipped with elongated rending claws (think Necron Flayed Ones from DoW)

That's all I can think of for now

I've been thinking of another idea for "undead" that would go in a subtle/low-magic setting where the gods' existence is known and felt every day, but their nature and that of the afterlife or spirit world are almost a complete mystery. This could be the same setting as my anti magic ghost fetus, above. In particular, the gods are fully able and willing to help their followers. Some may even be so altruistic as to give their blessings and aid indiscriminately to everyone who asks, and some may be more stingy, demanding years of worship or service before curing the slightest ailment.

Resurrections in this setting aren't exactly commonplace, but are a well-known and documented phenomenon. People's souls may be restored to them if a god decides the death was especially tragic or unjust, or if the returned person still has a purpose to fulfill that the god deems worthy. Such people are fully restored, and remember only vague and conflicting tidbits about the next world.
There are ways to reanimate and revitalize dead tissues, but only one necromancer has been able to come close to the gods' resurrection. Dratoc's Holistic Reclamation is a very exciting breakthrough that can return the dead wholly to life reliably and (relatively) cheaply. The Reclaimed person retains their memories, personality, health, etc.

The only thing missing is the memory of death. If asked, the Reclaimed will deny that they ever died. They always got miraculously better, or survived their accident by pure luck, they'll say. If presented with incontrovertible evidence of their death, the Reclaimed will always have a breakdown, sobbing, becoming violent, or withdrawing into themselves. Afterwards, they either will deny or won't recall these events. Also, most godly and demonic spirits will be incapable of perceiving the Reclaimed, for good or ill. The gods, those fonts of wisdom, are also frustrating silent about this new development.

There was a film "pulse", maybe a remake of some jap film, but yeah undead and stuff would come through wifi or phone signals, and ghosts would start appearing and just destroy your emotions, was mass suicides and shit and ghosts were popping up all over the world trying to kill people... was not too bad

That's probably that. I watched the original movie then.
