Hey guys, finally back after that one week break! Anyways, worked my way up to the Mahan and caved in and bought totally-not-Portland! Anyways, on with the quest!

Twitter: https://twitter.com/MercCommand

Other Quests: http://pastebin.com/sYpqmWZg

You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

This was it. The big day.

After days, even weeks of preparation, it was now finally happening. Constitution's refloating ceremony was beginning in a few short minutes, and pretty soon you'd be sailing alongside the venerable ship of sail, carrying the President of the United States himself, in front of the eyes of practically the ENTIRE nation!

So, you know, no pressure!

"We're set to begin in five minutes!" One of the organizers announces. Currently, you were all gathered in a covered drydock, just out of sight main crowds, the excited mumblings and talking with which you could hear even from in your sheltered hiding place.

"Okay, everybody line up!" North Carolina instructs as she paces up and down the dock, eyeing all the gathered shipgirls cautiously. "Who's leading the line?"

Live, from /tg/, it's somehow FRIDAY NIGHT
This week, WoWS releases the USS Sharkbait Indianapolis, which is most famous for being the emblematic symbol of USN cockups after Iowa's #2 turret.
D-day is on June 6. Have you remembered your veterans?

"Well, I am, of course!" You raise your hands and wave them about wildly. "Destroyers always take the lead, right?"

"I suppose." North Carolina sighs. "All right then, everybody form up! Remember, we're basically the opening act. We go out, do a few laps around the harbor, and then circle back to link up with the Constitution when it finally launches. Nothing more, nothing less. Understood?"

"Of course." Portland nods obediently.

"Naturally!" Atlanta says cheerfully.

White Plains silently gives a thumbs up.

"Again, are we UNDERSTOOD?" North Carolina shoots a suspicious look to you destroyers, particularly the Luce, Wren, Daly, and Kidd. She hadn't forgotten about the hell they had raised last night. By the time the Fletchers and Bensons had been separated, the mess hall had been reduced to a disaster zone.

Even worse, it looked like Heerman and Johnston also joined in on the "fun".

Of course, the Captain and North Carolina were FURIOUS. The poor Fletchers would have been struck from the festivities had it not been for the timely intervention of the President, who laughed off the affair with a simple "Girls will be girls!" Of course, being the Commander In Chief, neither the Captain nor North Carolina had any room or authority to object.

So they just had to settle for three weeks of ice cream rations withheld, a fate worse than death for any destroyer. Still, the specter of sweet deprivation did nothing to contain the enthusiasm of the younger destroyers, eager to show off in front of a crowd of people.

"Yes!" The Fletchers chime.

"Three minutes. If you have something to take care of, you do it NOW." North Carolina sighs.

And that's when your phone rumbles in your pocket. You quickly pull it out and see the caller is Woel.

Well, you still had a couple of minutes. You had time for a quickie.

"Yo!, what's up?" You greet your sister/clone, making sure not to say her name out loud.

"Hey, just calling in to wish ya luck!" Woel sounded much happier and livelier. "I'm watching everything on the TV, so I can't wait to see ya in your big moment!"

O-oh right, this was being nationally broadcast. Of course Woel would be watching.

It also sounded like wherever she was, it was somewhere crowded. You could hear multiple people talking in the background.

"Well, thanks a lot!" You laugh with a tinge of nervousness.

"One minute!" North Carolina gives the final warning.

"Anyways, I gotta go! I'm still waiting on those maid pics!" You say.

"Jeez, shut up about that already!" Woel whines. "All right, I won't keep ya! Go knock em dead!"

You quickly pocket your phone again, and just in time, as you can see the organizers and Navy personnel at the mouth of the drydock hurriedly wave at you all, signalling that it was time to go.

"No pressure, Hoel!" Johnston teases, pinching your cheek.

"You're only leading the entire formation." Heerman adds, pinching your other cheek.

"Jeez, knock it off!" You squeal as you bat their hands away. "Let me focus!"

You take a deep breath and fire up your boilers, throttling forward to a gentle cruising speed. Your optics are temporarily blinded as you steam out into the open air, and immediately, the immensity of the event hits you full force like a blast wave.

Lining the shores are what have to be hundreds of thousands of people, way, WAY more than the few tens of thousands the organizers were expecting. You could even see spectators crowding the rooftops of the buildings near the shore in an attempt to get a better view. The entire shore was just a wave of human flesh and excitement.

In addition, there was a veritable fleet of civilian boats out in the bay as well. Everything from recreational speedboats, high class yet, and simple commercial fishing boats. Whatever was even vaguely seaworthy was out in the water today, though naturally, the ad hoc fleet was kept corralled by a line of police boats.

"Come on, Hoel, you're practically a dead fish out there!" Portland tutted. "Wave to them or something!"

Oh right!

You plaster a big, genuine grin on you face and wave to the crowd as you speed along the water, sticking to the planned route while the rest of your task force follows, similarly smiling and waving at the crowd.

"All right, last lap." North Carolina says as you make about three laps around the harbor. "Let's make this one to remember."

>In my opinion, Iowa can't due to a certain explosion in her #2 turret. I don't know about Missouri or Wisconsin, but NJ would need a fair deal of repairs to return to service.
#2 was fully repaired before she was decommissioned, though never reactivated. NJ and Big Mo would require new guns, due to an overzealous junior officer spiking them when the Navy started an abortive disposal process in the mid-90s, and those guns no longer exist (IIRC, there's only nine of them not mounted aboard ships that haven't been scrapped now).

Iowa and Wisky *were* being kept in twelve-month reserve status until 2009, when Congress finally dropped that requirement, allowing the Navy to officially transfer ownership of Wisky to the City of Norfolk, and museum donation for Iowa, too. All four are officially off the books now. (Ironically, Showboat, Mamie, and Bama are still technically required to be kept in a condition where the Navy could return them to service, too, but there's no chance of it happening.)

Those were 16"/45 Mark 6es like Showboat and the Sodaks had, with the breech cut off of a second one and the rest of it welded onto the end. I wasn't counting those because they don't match the guns on the Iowas, just like the gun at the SoDak memorial doesn't.

Yeah, and North Carolina had the same door cut into the #2 barbette for tourist access; I believe Wisky has had it done, too. In all cases, the plug cut out of the barbette is done with a 45-degree angle on the cut so that the plug could, theoretically, be put back in place and welded back into place. It's not going to happen, mind, but it does *look* like an original access door that way.
>>
>>47602241
From everything I read, they were 16"/50, which is why they were constantly referred to as 16"/100 whenever a technical source referred to one of the combination guns.

"Let's give Haida a big welcome to the family!" You say cheerfully.

Conveniently enough, the Canadian destroyer was position practically in the center of the destroyer formation, making her a perfect target as well as cutting off all possible avenues of escape. It was perfect.

"All right girls, on the count of three!" You grin.

"One!"

Star shells locked and loaded.

"Two!"

Pressure in your fire hoses rising to maximum capacity.

"THREE!"

Immediately and without warning, dozens of fire hoses open up, dousing Haida in torrents of water. The Canadian shipgirl shrikes in surprise as her entire hull is soaked.

Your faeries even add a nice touch by dyeing the water in some of your hoses, so you're shooting streams of red, white, and blue water in all directions. It seems the faeries on your fellow sister ships had the same idea, resulting in Haida being doused in pure AMERICAN FREEDOM!

And a scant few seconds later, all of your five inch cannons fire in unison, star shells exploding in the air. And just like your fire hoses, your faeries seemed to have modified to shells to explode in bursts of red white and blue. It was pretty cool seeing clouds of colored smoke exploding in the sky over you.

"What are you doing?!" Portland hisses.

"Just giving 'em a show like Carolina said!" You giggle and point to the crowd, whose roars and applause were growing in volume. "See? They love it!"

"Damnit..." Portland groans.

"This wasn't exactly what I had in mind..." North Carolina sighs. "But as long as it's not harming anybody..."

"What about meeeee?!" Haida wails.

"Yer a Canuck! Ye don't count, ya snowslut!" Kidd chortles.

"Kidd, please, behave." You tut as you shift your fire hose away from Haida. "Don't feel bad, we're just ribbin' ya."

"This is so embarrassing...!" Haida groans. "And I know Ontario is going to be watching...!"

The training and elevation gears are welded down in the stowed-and-locked position as part of the demilitarization process. However, that's not irreversible, as I believe it was also done as part of their mothballing, too--and in any event, it's welded in a way that just takes an angle grinder to cut loose again.

That's when you see additional star shells exploding in the sky, and squadrons of Hellcats and Corsairs weaving through the sky. You turn to see that White Plains and Atlanta seemed to have joined in on the ad hoc show. White Plains' aircraft circled above the bay, making some low passes on the crowd and proudly displaying their colors. In fact, you noticed some of them weren't flying in traditional USN colors anymore. You spotted at least one Hellcat painted dark green, with the tail covered in a black and gold checkerboard pattern making some particularly daring aerial stunts like loops and steep dives.

"Honestly, Hoel." Portland sighs as she sails up next to you. "You can't even stick to script in a non-combat op?"

"Oh come on, we just improved it!" You laugh. "How'd you know it was me, anyways?"

"I had a feeling." Portland rolls her eyes.

"Come on, let your hair down for a bit!" You plead. "It's a special occasion!"

"Well, SOMEBODY has to look professional, at least!" Portland huffs as she drops back to her original spot in the formation alongside North Carolina, who was looking similarly exasperated.

Well, it looks like it couldn't be helped. At this point, you're all nearing the part of the harbor where the Constitution is moored. You assume the President is already on the ship, considering the fact that the ship was surrounded by black SUVs and armored vehicles. On the main deck, you could see the suited Secret Service guards patrolling, with the President himself nowhere to be seen. Probably being kept below decks to stay out of sight of possible snipers. They always had to be vigilant, after all.

"All right, everybody form up!" North Carolina barks, not bothering to chastise or scold anybody. What was done was done, and there was no time for punishments now. "We'll be flanking the Constitution side by side! And no more unscripted shenanigans! Got it!?"

You notice she's staring at you in particular. Does... does she know?

"Y-yes ma'am!" You nod.

"Well, come on now, why are we still stuck here!?" The President barks as he strides onto the deck, wearing the silliest and most oversized ship captain's hat that you've ever seen. "Let's set sail already!"

"Mr. President..." North Carolina grumbles. "Should you really be wearing that hat?"

"What's wrong with it?" He asks, adjusting it on his head.

"He totally looks better with the hat!" You grin, trying to keep yourself from bursting into outright laughter. "I really makes him look... dignified!"

"See? She thinks it looks great!" The President grins. "It's decided! The hat stays!"

You can see his Secret Service agents secretly groan and shake their heads, but it's not like they were in any place to openly protest.

"Sometimes I wonder how he got elected." Portland sighs.

"I dunno, he seems perfectly nice!" Johnston shrugs.

However, the unfurling of canvas sails and the creaking of wood signals to you that Constitution was finally under way. Of course, she needed a little help from some harbor tugs to guide her out to open water, but once there, the onboard crew takes over, and for the first time in years, good old Constitution begins to sail under her own power.

You're not sure why, but you feel your heart skip a beat as you watch the ancient wooden ship sail out to sea, where she belongs. Even the crowd is cowed for a second or two, a brief moment of silence and respect as the old warship slowly made its way to the open sea.

And then the President rises from the main deck, his arms raised and outstretched in double peace signs and a big sloppy smile on his face, his oversized captain's hat already tilting dangerously to the side.

And the crowd loves it!

However, you do see a few boats from the civilian flotilla beginning to drift apart from the main group. You could already see a police boat puttering over to check things out. You knew you were supposed to stay in formation with the Constitution, but...

You decide to stick with the ship as a flight of jet planes makes a low pass over the convoy, trailing red white and blue streaks of smoke as they go. However, you DO keep a wary eye on the wayward boats, which were now drifting dangerously close into Constitution's path. You also catch sight of an officer in the responding boat, angrily yelling at the other ships to presumably get out of the way.

"This is Hoel to Constitution! Change course! Change course NOW!" You scream into the radio. "Those boats in your path are rigged with explosives!"

Immediately, the man deck of the Constitution explodes into activity. Secret Service agents dump all notions of subtlety and draw their weapons. Not just handguns, but submachine guns and full size assault rifles they had been keeping hidden away somewhere. Meanwhile, the President was leaning over the rail, trying to get a better look while two of his men were desperately trying to pull him away to safety.

Constitution's crew, tipped off at the imminent hazard, immediately pull a hard left rudder, the helmsman spinning the steering wheel as fast as he could. Ever so slowly, Constitution begins to veer left, albeit very slowly. Age of sail ships were not known for their speed or maneuverability.

"Watch out! We've got potential hostiles on the move!" You hear someone yell over the security channel. You glance over to the fleet of civilian ships and can immediately pick out boats of various sizes breaking off from the main body and making a beeline straight for the Constitution. This was obviously the real attack!

"Weapons free!" You hear another voice shout. "Take out the hostiles!"

"No shot, no shot!" Another man shouts back. "They're mixed in the civvies!"

Meanwhile, the rest of your Task Force was hearing all of this as well. Your experienced ships, such as your sisters, Portland, Atlanta, White Plains, and Haida immediately shift into battle mode. However, Luce, Wren, Daly, and Kidd hesitate, unsure of what's going on.

"Everybody, arm up!" North Carolina barks to rally them. "Protect the President at all costs!"

As a shipgirl, do we just manifest whatever ammo we need at the time, so long as we're fed food?

Does this mean that we could switch from HE to AP on the fly?

"Come on, girls, let's go!" You yell as you speed forward. "We're the only ones who can get stuck in and take them out safely!"

"What about the civvies?" Luce asks.

"Let security handle 'em!" You respond. "Focus on the hostiles! I'll call 'em out, but you make SURE you know what you're shooting at!"

"Arrr, we be gettin' into a proper slugfest, eh?" Kidd chortles. "Bring 'em on!"

You speed past the line of police boats serving as the first line of defense for the President, the officers on board hesitating as they try to get clear shots at the approaching hostile boats. Your radar is quick to pick them out.

Now, with your radar, you'd be able to react almost instantly in responding to new threats and developments, but you wouldn't have time to assist the other ships. Or, you could hang back and relay information to the others like a sort of discount Anna, but obviously you wouldn't be able to directly assist much...

You throttle back on your engines, instead focusing your attention and your power on your radar as you try to visualize the battlespace. You immediately filter out the boats moving slowly or not at all, and focus on the fast ones weighted down with either lots of people or lots of munitions.

"Luce, Wren, Daly ,there's a squadron of four speedboats to your portside. Take them out! Kidd, there's a yacht directly in front of you. Take care of it! Haida, there's two boats to your starboard side. Try and suppress them! White Plains, I want every plane you've got in the air! We need eyes in the sky!"

"Roger that." White Plains affirms.

"Moving." Haida says simply.

"How about us?" Johnston asks.

"You and Heerman stay back as reserve, in case anybody breaks through." You say, wiping sweat from your brow. Your body was feeling hot from a combination of the stress and your radar running at full power. Is this what Anna feels every time she's out there?

"H-hoel! There's people on these boats!" Wren stammers. "U-um, what do we do?!"

"Shoot to disable. We don't need to kill them!" You instruct.

"Got it!" Wren nods happily, apparently a bit more confident now. You see her glide in towards one of the hostile speedboats, casually shrugging off the assault rifle fire the masked occupants were firing her way before she fires an AP shell straight through the speedboat's engine block. A thick cloud of smoke belches from the rear of the boat as it grinds to a halt. Luce and Daly similarly dispatch their targets with relative ease.

Up above, White Plains' aircraft continue to circle, occasionally diving down to strafe wayward boats that you call out.

Kidd, in all her glory, actually boards one of the hostile yachts, her saber slicing through guns barrels like paper as she laughs maniacally. Even Pepe gets in a bit on the action, fluttering around and pecking at assailants who would have otherwise flanked or snuck up on its master.

Meanwhile, on the deck of Constitution, your hydrophones were picking up the President's voice.

"Well, we can't just let our girls fight out there all alone!" The President barks. "Let's return fire!"

"Sir, that's not possible!" One of the sailors responds.

"What?" The President blinks, as if genuinely confused. "This is a warship, isn't it? And I can see she's armed with cannons! Why don't we use those!?"

"Sir, these cannons haven't been fired in CENTURIES. There just here for show!"

"WHAT?!" The President roars. "WE HAVE A WARSHIP THAT CAN'T ACTUALLY FIRE ITS GUNS!? WHAT KIND OF TWO BIT NAVY ARE WE RUNNING HERE?!"

"Sir, the Constitution was never meant to-"

"You know what, forget it. Wilson! Hand me your sidearm!"

"Sir, I don't recommend that..."

Hah, you're starting to like this President more and more!

"There's more coming in! They're trying to circle around us!" White Plains warns. "North Carolina, Portland, and Atlanta are moving to intercept, but they're weaving between the civilian ships!"

You fire up your radar again, and you could see that she was right. The other destroyers were still occupied handling this flank, meaning it was up to the larger shipgirls to hold the other one. You're pretty sure you can direct their fire like before, but your head was starting to feel REALLY hot as more and more sweat begin dripping down into your eyes. This was the first time you've had to use your radar at such intensity at such an extended period of time to keep up with the fast pace of this conflict...

Fortunately nothing breaks or explodes this time, but it still feels like your damn brain is on fire. However, you can see it. The attackers, knowing their plan was blown, seemed to be massing for one final, massive attack on the more vulnerable flank protected only by North Carolina, Portland, and Atlanta.

Unfortunately for them, you could see where they were going and when they would reach the ideal engagement distance.

"Everybody, they're going to be breaking from the main fleet in eight seconds!" You warn. "Point your guns to your two o' clock and fire on my mark!"

You can "see" the larger ships start shifting their guns to the predicted point right as the first few enemy boats break out into the open, their occupants already standing up to fire machine guns and rocket launchers at the Constitution and its defenders.

Too bad for them their defenders were waiting and ready.

To say it was a turkey shoot would have been a bit of an understatement. Pinpoint 8 inch and 5 inch cannon fire from Portland and Atlanta demolishes the initial wave of boats. The two cruisers, already hardened from years of fighting Abyssals, didn't even flinch at the relatively paltry firepower these mere human attacks could bring to bear. North Carolina takes out any stragglers with her smaller secondary batteries, and saves her massive 16 inch guns for the larger boats like the yachts and fishing trawlers that had been converted into ad hoc gunboats. Of course, those things don't stand a chance against her superior firepower, and quickly enough, the attack is halted.

However, what kind of shocked you was the sheer fanaticism that the attackers showed. Even when they were clearly outmatched, they just kept coming. It kind of reminded you of the lengths the Japs back then would go to kill the enemy....

You shake those thoughts out of your head. You needed to stay in the present!

Thankfully, by this point, more security assets in the form of additional shipgirls and Navy ships and helicopters were pouring into the harbor. The coast was already being evacuated and cleared of civilians, while the police boats on site began sifting through the wreckage and survivors of your task force's desperate defense of the President and Constitution.

"Girls, we have a bit of an issue." The Captain's voice buzzes over the radio. "The immediate threat is over, but the Secret Service isn't taking any chances. They want to evac the President off of the Constitution, but we have no available boats to take him and Marine One can't airlift him off of the ship. That means it'll be up to one of you to get him back to shore."

You pause.

"Wait, you don't mean-"

"Yes, one of you is going to have to carry the President." The Captain concludes.

"Well, I heard Sweet Pea has carried a President before..." You suggest.

"Noted." North Carolina nods as she turns to the cruiser. "Portland, you're up."

"W-what?!" Portland flushes red. "Y-you're just going to base it off of that?"

"No, I'm basing it on the fact that you're the most dependable ship here other than me." North Carolina sighs."Can I trust you on this?"

"O-Of course!" Portland's face flushes even redder as she salutes. You swear her glasses are fogging up as well. "I won't let you down!"

"It's not ME you should be afraid of letting down." North Carolina points her thumb to the President, who's slowly being lowered down the side of Constitution via rope.

And he's STILL wearing that stupid goddamn hat.

"Damnit, Hoel." Portland groans.

"What's the problem, Sweet Pea?" You chuckle. "I thought sucking up to the guy in charge was your thing! Or is that reserved for the Admiral only?"

Portland just glares PURE HATRED at you, but there's very little she can do as she hurries over to collect the President, who opts to piggyback off of her Rig as if he were riding a magnificent steed.

"Now this is more like it!" The President says proudly as he points with a sword that you have no idea where he gotten from. "FULL SPEED AHEAD!"

Portland can only sigh as she carries her Commander in Chief back to shore as the destroyers in her charge snicker at her predicament.
