Leeland churns with activity, the skyline of hive spires steaming as their ventilation shafts work to regulate the heat of endless factories and seas of molecular construction vats. In orbit, the Union made monitor glides silently over it all, its camera focused on the epicenter of the planet's sprawl. Theseus sits within, ripping apart the images and stitching them back together in real time to remove the overwhelming sea of chitinous spires sprouting from the ground.

Deep beneath the endless spires and hive structures, within a small cave sealed beneath a mountain that has long since vanished under the bunker built around it, Lee sits along the edge of a small pond, leaned against the soft mossy rock wall behind him as the luminescent fungal spores that once served as your first throne glow softly in the dim light of the chamber as the water trickles from the spring through the hive beyond.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

They tend. That is not an absolute.

There is still no reason why have to lay queens to delegate when we can do all that ourselves.

QD will still have to do the legwork of crunching and fluff, and we'll still have to be watching over our daughter's shoulders should they find/do anything interesting.

Your ships orbit the mysterious jungle covered planet as your drones continue to comb the surface. Debris from the Obsidian Queen's Hive ship has been mostly recovered, although portions of the hull had already begun to melt into her signature hive creep, consuming the surrounding life with surprising speed. What parts were found in time were recovered, while larger sections that had begun to spread were quickly expunged with fire by your drones before the contamination spreads too far.

The main hull of the massive craft was found shattered into segments and scattered over a river valley. The river had almost instantly been contaminated by the sleek, oily spores of the ship's hull, with thick inky ooze growing over the flora downstream. After a survey of the valley, your drones were forced to glass nearly fifty miles of jungle to prevent the spread of infection, while more surgical strikes are still underway, burning out the smaller of the hull pieces where smaller craft had crashed, some even spewing forth surviving crew, mad drones with only the agonized rage of a thinker separated from its mother to guide them. Control of space and air is yours, and your fighters and low flying corvettes make quick work of them, hunting down the survivors with unrelenting vigor.

The jungle burns through the night, turning the sky a deep orange as smoke fills the air for miles, casting a thick haze over the continent. As the day comes, and the sun rises, there is hardly any difference in light as the glow of fire is replaced with the haze of the local star smothered by the dense clouds and smoke.

Containment has been achieved. What remains of the wreckage is dead, and your drones split their attention between salvage and searching the surface for the source of that mental signal. You know you felt it, a sudden ping in your mind, a distant call like an echo of a voice shouted from over a hill reduced to an almost inaudible scream. Only for a moment.

The problem was never loyalty it's the fact it takes a year for a queen to mature we need to protect them as they grow and they need thier own space all things we can't give them
>>
>>47639002
It's not a year, more like a couple of months. But thats still months that a planet is nonproductive. And we don't really have all that many planets of our own to begin with.

>>
>>47638970
I guess it all depends on what "sibling rivalry" actually entails. Among a lot of eusocial insects "sibling rivalry" can entail one sister enslaving or killing her weaker rivals to attain dominance.
>>
>>47639104
Welp given what OB did to mom and gardener then we know how bad it can get
>>
>>47638990
The planet is host to strange life, as a clearly geological planet has given rise to an unusual assortment of sharp, jagged spires of rock stabbing up from the ground like the protruding bones of a great corpse, slicing at the sky like knives. Beyond the torched and obliterated wastes left by the crash sites of your rival queen's ships, there is not much in the way of solid, flat terrain.

There is an odd sensation as you search the planet, as if you are being watched. The sensation is not often felt, but you know it with certainty. A psionic mind has it's attention turned to your activities here, but its signal is far from strong, hardly more than a ripple through the static of the universe. It feels like it builds up for some time, as if gathering strength, until there is a sharp burst. A distant cry that can hardly be understood. A desperate whisper as if spoken from a death bed.

"Ẃ̡́҉͘h̵̢̨̀o͢͏̀ ̨̕͜͜͠á҉̧ŗ̷̛͘e͘ ̧̛͡͏͞y͝ǫ̸̵͡͡u̶͟?̴̢̢́̕"

No, not even that much was left to interpretation. It was stated that they would be obedient towards mom, but might have some border skirmishes between themselves. Granted, although it would be preferable if internal power struggles weren't an issue period. It would probably be prudent to establish some hierarchy for future daughterus, perhaps based on planetary productivity. At least then any competition will always result in a positive for the hive as a whole.
>>
>>47639211
They don't need a hive bigger than what we had in the first few days. They also don't need to hatch their own drones to control them, as for example our first thinker was one of our mother's drones, technically our brother, and he's still with us and doing fine.
>>
>>47639126
"Daughter of White, Queen of Red, Enemy of Kinslayer."
>>
>>47639241
>They don't need a hive bigger than what we had in the first few days.
That assumes that they don't want their hives to grow. Like we do.
>>
>>47639241
>They also don't need to hatch their own drone
Then why are we even making daughters in the first place?
>>
>>47639266
And you in turn are assuming that they're impossible to reason with AND that they wouldn't find having large chunks of our existing drones to manage for themselves acceptable.

In essence you think that the only way they would be happy is if they are allowed to do what we were forced to do when born: go out alone into the wilderness and build a hive from scratch.

This goes against the information we have that they would be happy as our effective vassals, and that closely related queens can use each others drones.
>>
>>47639126
>Attempt to have your drones zero in on the location
While this is going on

>Call back to the voice (write in)
We are a friend. A young queen. What happened here?
>>
>>47639284
Because we currently only have a single intelligent entity in charge of micromanaging an entire interstellar empire. The humans and such which are plugged into our hive can't give orders directly to our drones, they have to route it through us.
>>
>>47639296
You forget that even if the Drone works for us he still lief and withheld information from us at or mothers orders no queen will trust another's drones that's why we start with the starter drones because it's what's natural for us.
>>
>>47639324
This isn't a problem.
You're assuming there are bandwidth/processing limitations on the Hive's interactions with human beings. There aren't, the only limit is what we the quest players can deal with.
As far as you need to be concerned, Queenie has unlimited ability to deal with things. Unlike us.
Plus, we can delegate to Thinkers.
>>
>>47639324
Anon. Thats not a problem. At all. We do not have any problem juggling all of those orders at once. We could talk to a thousand or a million different humans at once with no latency. The only bottleneck in terms of orders, actions or communication is in Quest Drone's ability to write and explain it to us. A daughter does nothing to change that.
>>
>>47639296
Yes but you don't understand. Our daughters our Queens. They have the imperative to grow just like us. Would you be content with just being given one planet and be told to only have that unless your mother decides to give you more? If we make one now, I can bet she'll do everything in her power to expand without directly going against our orders. That can cause some problems.

>>47639324
>Because we currently only have a single intelligent entity in charge of micromanaging an entire interstellar empire.
Yes thats what being a Queen is all about. It is not required that our humans directly give orders to drones. Elizabeth seems to be doing fine and we only had to order the thinkers to work with her once. Also I don't see how this has anything to do with making daughters.
>>
>>47639345
Rogue daughters would only happen if they got corrupted by the crystals or something like that. Except maybe if we abused them terribly, but Mother would never do that.

>>47639375
That's not the issue, the issue is that we have only one egg in one basket.
>>
>>47639389
>They have the imperative to grow just like us.
Not really. If daughters normally behave as vassals, as QD told us, then obviously our species evolved to be capable of cooperating with limited space available. Otherwise such dynamics wouldn't be natural to us.

You try to call back, sending your mental voice across the continent. You send images of battle with the Obsidian Queen, glimpses of your motherly splendor in a mental greeting, and memories of the attack over this world, just enough to get the image across, hardly much in the way of details.

The whispering curiosity fades as you speak your name across the region, and there is only static once more. Too much static. In a very specific place. Your drones begin to focus on the area.

Something flashes from the forest, and one of your wasps is tackled from its flight over the canopy. It's image is blurry, as if attacked by a shadow, out of focus like looking through a muddy lense. The wasp is pinned to a tree, something held fast around its neck as it flails to get free. A creature, its head a vibrant, shimmering blue mixed with metallic greens and hues of purple looks down on your drone, its face clearing into a crisp image. It has four eyes, all four positioned forward in a clearly predatory trait. They look at your drone with purpose, with intelligence behind them.

The creature's head is sleek and streamlined, its face clearly aerodynamic with a short, sharp nose covered in slits that widen and narrow as it breathes rhythmically. Its mouth is a tightly woven bundle of mandibles held together into a solid jaw, splitting momentarily to let out a grumbling, gurgling screech and then bundling it up again into a solid lower jaw held tight against a set of long, serrated, bright red teeth lining the single upper jaw. The teeth are carved, chiseled with strange, swirling insignias.

No, each daughter would be separately vulnerable both to physical and to psionic attack. Thus if we hide our daughters in different places we have separate baskets. Even if one attack succeeds, the entirety of our drone mass and most of our queens are still fine.
>>
>>47639511
>Luckily we can make many baskets with one egg in it each by having daughters.
The baskets are planets anon, we need more planets for us to consider having daughters.

>>47639443
The creature holds a spear-like weapon against your wasp, the end forked as if made to pin without harming the target unintentionally. It grasps it firmly with a pair of two, short but lean and muscular legs that hang from its short body, and it props itself up at a surprising height on a set of incredibly long arms, gripping the branch it is on with long, hook-like fingers as a cape of skin folds cleanly along the forearm and up to its body like a wing suit. The flap of skin is covered in a shimmering display of feather-like scales, sliding over one another with the slightest of a jingling rustle with each movement.

The distant voice returns, weak but desperate, and the creature looks away for a moment before turning back to your drone with notable suspicion. It plucks the spear from the tree and quickly backtracks to the far edge of the branch, gripping its weapon in its nimble feet as its clawed hands tear at the branch with its graceful stride. It seems to wait for a moment, watching your drone, before it stands up to its full height, at least two meters, over half of which given by its incredibly long arms, and it lets out a belching cry, inflating its neck as its voice echoes over the jungle.

It dives off. Falling some distance before its arms unfurl into a vast sail of a wingspan glittering like a rainbow with its myriad of shimmering feathered scales, and it arcs back up into the air, circling your drone at some distance, and then veering off, its flight slow and deliberate as it occasionally flips around to see your drone again.

It seems obvious enough of a sign.

This whole "one egg" metaphor is so retarded. If anything gets to the point where our queen is in danger of dying then everything is going to be in ruins since our home planet is by far the best defended.

I just wanted to get some more criticism so we have all our weaknesses covered.
Here is the plan i thought up last Sunday.

>alright let me explain a general invasion scenario.
>1) blink fleet to attack weakly defended planet, remove all enemy ships.
>2)begin orbital bombardment, use those nanomachine bombs that devours everything to clear zone for our troops and hive creep bombs.
>3)begin land war with troops, jammer shuttles to disrupt enemy drones and flamethrower/cryospray to remove the enemy creep, use acoustics and radar to detect tunnels and bunkers.
>4)when we have more that half of the planet in our control send in nanomines to dig into the mantle (but not the core) build space elevators to build ships and reinforce our fleet.
>The plan can be change as situations occur.
There was more discussion at the end of thread 53.6 i suggest you read, since I'm too spiritually exhausted to type it all.
>>
>>47639841
Well we could, if we want to pull off a one-time attack on all her things using technology she's never seen before and won't have come up with countermeasures for.

But that requires scouting out all her planets and that will never happen probably for IRL months.

>Have the wasp follow the creature

Your wasp takes flight after the strange creature, and you pluck several of the closest flies from their duties and have them follow more discreetly, just in case.

The creature leads your wasp slowly over the jungle canopy, gliding along on its massive wingspan. Before too long, you think you have a good idea of where you are being led. A long, swerving mountain range, narrow like a massive knife's edge sprouting from the ground stretches out before you, speckled with lights. The image is blurred, and your drone finds itself drifting off course more than once, as if gravitating away from it. You find yourself having to force the drone to keep its course, though not through disobedience, in fact you sense the wasp feels nothing but shame in its sudden inability to fly in a straight line, and as you continue to get closer the lights blur together, losing their distinction into a faint, subtle glow that spreads across the mountain range. The psionic static here is palpable, a dense fog you can feel like a tingling through your thorax. You find yourself correct your wasp's flight path, and it takes everything your wasp is capable of to avoid crashing into a tree.

The creature lets out an echoing call again, its throat puffing up like a balloon. Others call back, until there is a cacophony of screeching calls that drowns out the sounds of the forest, and a moment later the mountains begin to grow clear and crisp. The image sharpens into that of a grand city, humble in sophistication but impressive in scale at the least. Grand huts of wood and bone hang from the sides of the cliff, and structure carved into the side run bridges between gaps in the mountains. Doors open out to straight drops, and creatures of various sizes and color patterns fly from building to building. A formation is quickly moving to intercept, their figures obscured as if out of focus, and they are upon you before your wasp fully notices them.

>>
>>47639903
We're experiencing some kind of psionic interference here, we should stop before we completely lose contact. Try and signal that the wasp cannot fulfill their function properly in this interference.
>>

>>
>>47639903
More noises are exchanged, and the formation become crisp in your mind as they join your guide. One, slightly larger than the others flies in closer to your guide as the two at the outer flanks fall back around your wasp. They eye your drone with mistrust and confusion.

You wonder, suddenly, how you recognize their emotions so easily. You feel odd having missed it at first, and until now you had been trying to determine the limit of it, but they are, each of them, broadcasting their own mental signal. At first it felt like static, a subtle wave of disruption canceling out their own presence in an intriguing process you are rather interested in learning yourself, but now, with them so close, you can feel their minds drifting out around them, as if their thoughts fly as easily as they do. You wonder if they can understand each others' minds, or if they are blind to their own signals.

The two in front of you hold some conversation that is clearly of a deal of importance between them. The larger of the two, almost crimson in color, with streaks of deep indigo faded into the wings that shift through the spectrum as the feathered scales shift in the wind, comes in close to the smaller one, holding its wing over the other and casting the smaller one in shadow. They speak in croaks, deep, sharp, chittering noises that hold a strange melody within each statement that seems to almost blend together into a kind of impromptu song between them.

You put a temporary halt to your research as you send your thinkers what data you have of the language. They begin pouring over every croaking cackle and chirp with an intense, ravenous thirst for understanding. Elizabeth gets up from her table, confused for a moment as the thinker she had outsourced a good portion of the mathematics she was engrossed in vanishes to its other duties. She stands dumbfounded for a moment as her mind realizes what had happened, as if a flashbang had gone off in the room.

"Alright, alright. I get the message." She says. "I could use a bit of a break at any rate." She gets up from the table of petri dishes and makes her way down the hall.

The creatures around your wasp seem to grow closer, as if daring each other to approach the strange insectoid beast flying among them. One nearly is upon your wasp when your drone clicks its mandibles in its direction and it quickly dives away. The creature opposite you flutters its lower jaw in what seems to be a giggle.

A deep guttural roar, quick, subdued, and commanding erupts from the larger one in the lead as its head snaps back at the two flanking your drone. They quickly leap forward and fall into formation with a flap of their great wings, and they depart. Your guide follows them in, taking a long, arcing path up over the primitive city and towards one of the mountainous knives of rock, diving down to where it is at its thickest. A large landing has been carved out of the base, where a waterfall flows out beneath the intricately chiseled stone slab and into a lush valley filled with hanging bone and hide tents strung up between the trees and hooked into the massive eight meter thick trunks of the largest of the planets in the area.

The creatures land, dropping to their long, muscular arms as their wings fold along their forearms into cloaks behind them, flowing with each step as their tiny, far too short legs reach up like hands, holding their weapons proudly. The larger turns to your wasp, and it points to the ground. A circular pattern of symbols has been carved into the rock. It is clear it has been carved many times, retouched as time wore it smooth. The writing is instantly familiar to you. It is the Hive's written language, the artificial code assembled with the Skyl alphabet. Your wasp is quick to examine it.

"Our pride was our folly. Our future is our hope. Our sins are my prison. If you have heard me, help them."

The creature watches your drone as you read the text, closely, its dexterous legs gripping its spear tightly in anticipation. As your wasp looks back to it, it points into the cave beyond. You can feel... something within. Like a whimpering wheeze.

Your wasp enters, slowly skittering its way along the stone floor with caution. You have your drones in the outlying areas, all of them, you noticed, had somehow avoided the area despite their grid pattern search of the continent, and you have them close in, just enough to be nearby if needed.

Within the structure, there is a series of marble slabs, each covered in fantastical carvings and vibrant paintings. One shows a mural, painted and carved until it is almost a three dimensional image, of sickle shaped objects filling the sky, tearing eachother apart. The jungle burns bellow as a dark sea of shapes consumes everything.

Another, in astounding detail, shows the same ships, a stylized hive ship by the looks of it, surrounded by its fleet, falling to the ground and embedding itself beneath the surface. Its fleet largely broken and shattered, the hive ship crumbling and aflame.

Yet another mural depicts a number of figures, like the creatures outside, standing before a large, vibrantly colored creature, its head cresting the entire mural with elaborate, weaving marble carved with such care it looks as if it is made of paper and withered leaves, the texture of a hive's chitin replicated in painstaking detail. Its wings spread out on either side, eclipsing the painting and covering the other figures. The marble is covered in a fine dust, painted into the texture with chips of powdered crystal gemstones, making the wings glitter in the soft light.

The last shows the same figure, hunched over, its colorful luster faded. It holds out items in its claws that the others line up arround the mural to take. Others along the edge of the massive slab of artwork hold various devices in their grip as they stand vigil over the central queen figure.

>You have your drones in the outlying areas, all of them, you noticed, had somehow avoided the area despite their grid pattern search of the continent, and you have them close in, just enough to be nearby if needed.

What kind of psyonic stealth is this? Very neat stuff. Combing this with cloaking and we will be virtually undetectable by the OQ. They somehow got our drones to ignore they were in an illogical search pattern that missed an entire area...
>>
>>47640495

>>

>>
>>47640495
The hall ends eventually as your drone passes the last of the murals. At the end of the hall is a balcony, carved in swirling patterns and painted in vibrant colors. The railing is nearly non-existent, unneeded for a race capable of flight. Bellow is a tremendous chamber, filled with rows of large, padded beds and layers upon layers of blankets of fur and animal hide, all stained shades of purple and vibrant greens or reds. A number of slender figures, much taller than any of the others you have seen before, walk with practiced grace along their long arms, their bodies draped with cloth where their wings have become barren, little more than shriveled skin flaps hanging behind them like dresses. Several are hunched over some lump of dried, crispy chitin in the center, delicately wiping moistened cloths over the creature's carapace and holding bowls of steaming water to its head.

It moves. Slightly. The creatures around it turn to you startled. They look back at the ugly mass of chitin, unsure, and then quickly leave. The pathetic creature left atop the small mountain of pillows shakes with its weakness as it's head tries to look up to you with its ocular eyes.

It is a Queen. Her headcrest is shattered, scabbed over wounds cover the once intricately woven antennae as pulsing wires of tendons reach out to the pillar shaped relay behind her. Her egg sac is gone, a draping trail of shredded and dried flesh hangs behind her, with her rear legs and a great deal of her abdomen missing, with the rest covered in scars and dried, flayed flakes of carapace. Her arms nearly collapsed under her own weight as she tries to pull herself up to look at your wasp. She looks at you, long and hard, the relay behind her studying your mind, straining to see you as a queen should see a queen, thought to thought.

"You are of the White Queen." She says finally. "Then she has failed." Her head falls back to the layers of cloth of cushion with a heavy thud.

"But why did you come here?" She says finally. "She would not have spoken of me."

"The Obsidian Queen was attending to this planet. There was a signal."

"Yes. My defenses are dwindling, but they are still sufficient. I hide, and only when they come close do I strike." She says. You feel glimpses of her remaining forces. Ships, many stripped of their drives and armor, little more than railguns facing the sky in random directions hidden across the continent." Your wasp takes flight, buzzing to the ground in front of her. You are unsure of her ranking among the old queens of your mother's generation, but she is still an elder. The wasp huddles to the ground near her.

Up close you can see the muted greys of her carapace. Like layers of dust, her color long lost from her chitin.

"The Obsidian Queen." She says, thinking. "The Black Queen. The Betrayer. Yes. This is how I came to be here. But now you are here, you fought her? Drove her away?" She looks into your wasp's eyes with sincerity. "Does she still live?"

Your own indignance over the Obsidian Queen's acts betray your answer.

"I see." She says in silence.

I swear this is basically That Argument all over again.

We do not need two queens. We need more biomass, more metals, and more knowledge. She can only provide that last thing, and odds are will do so willingly without conditions.

Once she gives us that she's no more helpful than a newborn daughter and the same arguments apply. Cute as a button, but virtually zero tactical value to having a 'second queen' on our side. Are you a pro-daughter anon? Are you?

Your mind presses her for answers, her mind too weak to offer a full impression of her own identity.

"You were the Gray Queen?" You ask. A torn wing fidgets on her back.

"No." She thinks. "I was her daughter. I watched, only recently having laid my first clutch, as the Gardener gave word of your mother's departure." There is some nostalgia drifting through her mind. A bitter sweet toxin that feels smothering as it wafts through your mind. "I even claimed on of her worlds in the following reclaiming. I became my own after that. I rose above the others, my sisters, my cousins under the Grey Queen. This world was mine when your mother abandoned it. I fought for it. I earned it." She sends her mind to distant battles long ago, glory claimed in orbit as her newly born ships burned the sky and fell the bidding forces of her sisters, all vying for the resource rich system's jewel of a world.

"It did not last." She says as the memories fade. "I held myself high, the best of my mother's lineage, and I could do nothing as their minds were burned to nothing in front of me." Her claws shake, and she reaches to her head, caressing the wounds along her antennae. "I... broke my mind to save myself. I left them behind. Cut them all out of my mind. Cut out their screams." You catch the passing glimpses, arriving unbidden as quickly as they are banished from her thoughts. The relay behind her is all she can speak with, her mental voice echoing from it like the whispers of a ghost. "Then, she came for me. For any still left. I fought for this world, for my world, but it was not enough. I could not control my children, my voice was too weak for them to hear." She looks around the room, as if she expects to see the crash site as her memories give flashes of a falling ball of fire, a great flaming heap of flesh tumbling to the ground.

"I landed not far from here, and they found me, brought me here, made this place around me. I gave them what I could to help them."

anon, there's a huge taboo against queen killing. There's a big difference between deciding not to have a daughter, and allowing an elder queen to die in both human and hive morality. The tactical and knowledge information this queen can provide are potentially greater than a daughter would provide. The info may not be able to be accessed or reliable while she is in such a critical condition. I'm not pro-daughter, (nor am I the anon from before), but I am pro saving this queen. Unless she genuinely wishes to die (after providing us with all possible info) we should save this auntie.

"They hear me, but are not a part of me. They choose to obey. I help them to keep her away, and they follow my instructions." She says. A shaking claw reaches out to your wasp. "My children are gone. My fleets, ruins. I was a Queen, I held this system and others, commanded a grand fleet and the respect of my sisters. Now I am a barren mother. A Queen of nothing."

"My hive has learned much." You say as thoughts of your genetic mastery floats from your mind to hers. "You could be reborn." A trembling claw knocks over the wooden bowl beside her.

"And become the pawn of another queen a thousand years and more my younger." You feel her recoil with disgust, but not at the proposition, it is directed to herself. Her thoughts stumble. "I am sorry." She thinks with clear sincerity. "My exile has made me bitter and insolent. My place is clear, you are my superior and I will support you as such, but I am not ready to take on the mantle of the White Queen's lineage." She says, her head slowly falling back to rest on the pillows around her. She shifts her head to loot to your drone.

"I have seen the downfall of the last Great Queens, and the corruption of one of our greatest to the enemy." She says. "But today, I have seen hope for the first time in over a thousand years. Ask, and I will answer."

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The only part of a queens memory stored genetically is the ones of genetic and biological adaptations and engineering created by her mother queen. That makes no goddamn sense.

>investing in an ally to start up her own resource gathering and who will forever be indebted to us for it is would be the smartest way we've ever decided to spend it.

No it wouldn't. You can spend the exact same amount investing in your own growth for the exact same payoff, if not more of one due to being a single unified hive.

I swear it's like people keep confusing a 4X for a JRPG. The word "allies" sounds nice but for us they're only valuable if they bring something to the table we can't make ourselves, like knowledge or inimitable expertise. Any new ally, who starts from zero, their growth is competing with the hive's own growth, it's the same resources going around that everyone has to share. It's not like they're making anything out of thin air.

There's zero advantage to having more cooks managing this war soup, we have no limit on Thinker delegation or population growth but biomass.

If you want to play house and add her to our Party Members just because you really like her say so, but don't pretend there's tactical value in letting her rebuild an army that we could build ourselves instead.

You're half wrong and half right. The Betrayal memories were from the memory crystal. But the Gardener's DNA contained knowledge of things which weren't put there by her mother before the Ark set out. It included things copied from the native Ralighan life, things the Gardener learned/invented after she was born. >>37030164
>>
>>47641336
The knowledge of tactics and experience of hive vs hive combat is valuable, as is the ability to confer with another being that understands our abilities 100% and could potentially offer suggestions or critique on any kind of new forms of warfare, having experienced it.
>>
>>47641363
Yes, like I said, genetic and biological engineering knowledge. Anything more complex than that requires an intact nervous system to hold.
>>
>>47641336
Allies provide valuable advice, wisdom, experience, and a different outlook. Having allies we can turn to in areas we are less expert in is very useful. Theseus, for example, can provide us with very solid Union political advice and gave us access to (for example) the Union-Commonwealth diplomacy station. Having another queen means we get advantages from her growth in new areas that we don't have to invest time and resources ourselves into doing. Besides which the Red Queen is probably lonely. This isn't just a strategy involved, there's characterization here. I don't think she's ready to get rid of the only friendly queen (equal) she's ever met.
>>
>>47641154
"You knew the White Queen?" You ask.

"We all did. She led us. Her strength and her cunning was our last hope to survive." She says. There is some reservation in the statement. "But she was cold. Distant from us. She produced no daughters, refused to partake in the meeting of dynasties. She would hold tight to her control, but she never truely cared for the plights of any one Queen or bloodline." Her thoughts have an almost frightened reverence in them. "She was born in war, her and her sister. They were two of a kind, alike and inseparable, for a time."

"The White Queen had a sister?" You ask. Her thoughts already drifting over the memory of a face, but you are confused as it becomes crisp.

"Yes. The Black Queen. Both born in war, they were the only among us who had seen the enemy themselves, when my mother was but a cocoon, sealed away and sent adrift with the others. The two Queens were our navigators and our protectors."

Your mind races with questions of the ark, of the black queen before the betrayal. She stops you with a silent thought of patience.

"The Black Queen was fervent in her role. She dedicated herself to battle, to fighting our enemy, seeking them and their slaves out wherever she could. The Skyl, and the Ceph after them." She says. "It was her plan to free the Skyl. The White Queen found it repulsive, the idea of working with the evolved tools used to fight us was as insane as embracing the mad drones of your enemies. That was the start of the schism. The two divided, and departed, but your mother was a firm leader, and in the end, most of the queens sided with her, for a time. The Skyl worked with us, some more than others, but never with her. She never trusted them, not until the day their world burned for our act of kindness, and the last skyl died for the freedom we tried to give them. She still did not trust them."

The White Queen continued to isolate herself, abandoning tradition, dismissing requests for aid or judgment, only speaking with us to warn us away from our latest plans. We would ask her why, and she would tell us only that the knowledge would destroy us. Eventually, we went on without her. The Black Queen's experiments, her research, they offered us hope, a way to attack them directly." Her head rocks in its place on the pillows. "She was right. When we sought to attack them, to reach out at them to strike, we only let them reach us." She turns back to your wasp in silence.

"Knowledge is power, this is true, but it brings with it a great risk. Some things must be seen in order to see. To attack, they must be attacked. To exist, you must hold them in your mind. That is the nature of our enemy. That is what she understood, and she knew that telling us would only place us in greater danger. "They live?" She says. "That is good. Your mother was right about many things, but the Skyl did not deserve their fate. In the end they fought with us to the last. They watched their world burn, and thought it was better than the service they had known."

"How did the Black Queen turn mad?" You ask. Her thoughts are muddied for some time, looking for an answer.

"Both her and your mother were born before the ark left the space of the ancient hives. They were born as it departed, fleeing from the maw of the abyss." She says. "I do not know the details, only that it changed them. The Black Queen's fervor became her undoing. Her plans brought her closer and closer to the enemy, and when the time came to strike, when the abyss opened and the time to attack came, she looked away, and let it devour her."

You press for more, but foggy thoughts pour over her mind. "I do not know more of the details, and I do not wish to. It was her understanding that drove her mad. I am sorry."

>>47641652
How can we trust the skyl? How can we trust the humans?
I don't think the problem is with this queen's intention, she obviously is an enemy of the OQ. The only unknown is whether whatever attacked her originally can still do so if she is healed again.
>>
>>47641381
>Having another queen means we get advantages from her growth in new areas that we don't have to invest time and resources ourselves into doing.

>don't have to invest time and resources
What.

The queen has an infinite attention span and has access to the same resources this pity-ally does. It's not like they have access to resources we don't.
>>
Where the fuck are we going to move her to?

We can't let her build a hive here, Aunty will send fleets here and pulverize the place

Maybe we place her in the gardener old turf and have her guard our flank against the scavs?
>>
>>47641678

>>
>>47641694
She doesn't want to move. She wants to hide in her hole until the OQ is dead or whatever.

She is the NEET Queen.
>>
>>47641694
She was fine sitting there for years.
We can just let her keep managing her slice of the planet while we establish foothold on the rest of the system and rebuff OQ from trying for it in the future (like we would even without the old queen here)
>>
>>47641707
Shes going to be back on the crystals radar once we repair her relay

Do we have a spare dead shard lying around?
>>
>>47641733
We might have to give our only shard to her.
>>
>>47641694
She's fine right where she is man, if the OQ couldn't bombard her out of existence when given 1,000s of years of orbital control then she isn't going to succeed if we leave a naval force to defend her, or if we trade her knowledge of our potent planetary defense systems.

You hear a shimmy across a floor. Your drone twists its head and a slender figure rushes away into a corridor. Your drone turns back to the barren queen with the unspoken question.

"They are the stepchildren of your mother." She says. "This is what she spent her time with. I heard it was the Gardener that had inspired it, when she began toying with the things that lived in her garden. The White Queen asked for her aid in a matter. It was one of the few times she included others in her plots that I know of. I do not know the details, but soon after, your mother began finding other creatures. Single minded races like the Skyl, nearly born, but not yet formed from the womb of their world. She found several scattered across this region. These were one of the first. She gave them a great gift of the mind, which has allowed me to hide here for all this time. I could teach you..."

"You say there were others."

"Other attempts. Of the half-beasts found across these stars, she only seemed to pay mind to two. The Phantoms that live here, who she taught to hide from the minds of others, and the Blind, who she robbed of true sense, sealing their minds away forever in the tomb of their own bodies. I cannot fathom why she would do such a thing, to bring a lower race under your care, and then carve out such a part of their minds is a cruel thing."

"Do you know where these Blind were found?" You ask. She thinks hard on the matter.

"A small blue world with far too much water, and a single, unusually large satellite. Not far from the Skyl homeworld, surprisingly."

"How is it these Phantoms hide?" You ask, intrigued. She works to prop herself up.

"The powers of the mind are many and powerful. Our kind is still among the most attuned, but even we have fallen a long way from our old ways. Your mother saw the ancient queens and their true mastery. She knew secrets she never dared to show us, but this, I figured out myself." There is a hint of pride, withered and worn, but still there. "I will show you."

And I think I'm going to have to call it here, since it's almost six in the morning.

I'll try to stick around a bit longer for feedback, questions, designs, especially any feedback on how to keep fine tuning the new system.

I addition, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that I will be out of town all next week. The good news is that I'll be able to spend that time getting the crunch sorted and the star systems mapped out. I know that's not exactly an even trade, but still.

It should be noted that in order to heal her, you would need to totally replace her egg sac. Essentially, this makes her your daughter in just about every way that is important to a Queen.

While it's not out of the question, especially in her situation, it's still a very big decision. She has, more or less, said she needs to think about it.

>Up to you really.
Perhaps put the thinkers on fleet/swarm mechanism?
Have a unit of a bunch of thinkers and quantum thinkers that research one project at nominal speed, defined as getting close to the maximum grouping that can operate at top efficiency. Splitting attention is straightforward division, but to avoid bruteforcing some things, you could declare that stacking more thinkers on one thing has diminishing returns - 2 "think tanks" only get 1.5 speed; and to avoid further fractioning just say 4 think tanks is double speed and it won't go further?

"Think tanks" are dedicated research centres, so they're counted separate from just general infrastructure thinkers, and we can vote how much we have and maintain.

>>47642182
Well, what exactly do you want them to actually do and be capable of? You could also have a look at the proposed ship designs on the wiki, there's a decent possibility that there's a design on the wiki that can do it.
>>
>>47642232
I want them to be fast, hard hitting, cheap and disposable with self-destruction capabilities so OQ can't get any tech. But i understand if not all of my requirements can be met.
>>
>>47642282
Nah, your going about it wrong.

What you need is something with dedicated alpha strike abilities, coupled with heavy as shit shielding, a massive energy bank/capacitors for its size and then several varients of jump drives to cycle between.

Jump with hive drive, open fire, while fire is open we are already charging the second drive type, copying one of the other species, thus moving in an unpredictable manner to fuck up preemtive firing.

Need about 4 jump drives per ship of various types we can cycle. The shielding buys each jump time to seqwuay into the next.
>>
>>47642370
Just dont make the ships too large and we should be fine. Can overload the multiple warpdrives to blow up and randomly scatter the remains over the course of several light years of space.
>>
>>47642282
>fast
Okay, well we don't really have any means of speeding up our craft aside from cutting down on their weight, usually in the form of armor. So a fast ship would be one with little to no extra armor.

>hard-hitting
That is a matter of which weapon mounts used, but we can boost their effectiveness with fusion generators, which convienently allows them to self destruct rather spectacularly. I suppose you could also add missile pods, but those are fucking expensive both to build and fire, so you would want to keep them to a minimum.

>cheap and disposable
The biggest contributors to a ships cost in my experience is the armor, missile pods, and spinal hangars (which are just a fuckton of swarm hangars and docking bays where the spinal mounted gun would be) so avoid using those.

Now the big question for you is whether these things should be shielded, or cloaked, because they can't be both.
>>
>>47642370
Good idea but those ships seem expensive and filled with tech, it would be bad if OQ manages to salvage one. But maybe we can add them to the regular raiding fleets so they are the ships that pack a punch while the other cheaper ships act as targets/strike craft that can zerg rush anything dangerous and detonate.
>>
>>47642370
I feel that lighter, cheaper raiders will be more cost-effective. Sure, your idea would be devastating, but it would cost a bomb, be expensive to create and to maintain, and take much longer to grow/resupply. When i get home and onto my computer instead of my phone, i'll put together some cheapass raider fleets and a single superheavy raider fleet for comparison.
>>
>>47642370
You are overlooking some of the fundamental limitations of the blink drive. Using it invariably requires a long ass period of time to spool the drive and calculate the route, during which the ship is basically dead in the water (or space). Getting around that would require swapping their drives with something else, like a warp drive.
>>
>>47642415
Well the cloak vs shields decision depends on what we are targeting, if we fight something that can destroy our ships easily we will need cloak to sneak up and cripple it. But if we are fighting many small ships we will need shields to last longer.
>>
>>47642422
>>47642428

We are outfitting our ships with self destruct anyway, so its all moot on the tech front apart from the combat data. But even then, thats just a random choice we can change at our leisure.

Cheap ships as meatsheilds for the heavy strike force works. If nothing else they can bait the opponent out of position for the heavys to inflict damage.

>>47642437
We know of several methods of FTL and sublight propulsion, and can probably work on more if we need to. Some of our tech is not really suitable but the rest could be viable for this strategy.

The likely response to a light, cheap raid fleet is heavier and heavier defenses and more numerous fleets at each strategic point of interest, not to mention mines and other nasty surprises.
Raiding will lead to a minor arms race, so we would probably shift to more expensive ships depending on the sites development and fleet composition.

The problem we face is that we can not afford to lose ships easily. OQ outproduces us, so the long term economics will work out against us if our light fleet does not manage to inflict enough damage per ship lost.
>>
Do note: OQ's stealth hull design that inhibits sensor arrays would be perfect for mines in a minefield while not needing an energy upkeep.
>>
Raiding ships themselves give an advantage when we invade OQ, increasing in intensity when she tries to send reinforcements to whatever system we took, discouraging her from sending too much with the threat of taking another system. Or doing the opposite, stopping all raids for the psychological effect then sending all of them in one system as a second or third invasion force.
>>47642486
OQ has stealth ships? Or are you talking about those ships the cortez encountered that vent heat?
>>
>>47642477
The entire goal of raiding is hurting her industry so we take more planets from her, so at some point the raids will have to stop and the war will switch to space trench warfare.
>>
>>47642517
The ones we found this world with the old queen that had the weird, sensor absorbing hulls. We couldn't retreive anything.

Point being if you encase a mine in sensor absorbant hull then its a bigger bitch to pick up before it gets close.
>>
>>47642477
>We know of several methods of FTL and sublight propulsion, and can probably work on more if we need to.
Look, FTL and sublight propulsion is not something we can just get our thinkers to whip up in a week. It's a major cornerstone of any space capable civilization and the development is a once in a generational thing, even for Hive Queens. Espicially for Hive Queens. We could use the warp drive like the one on the orphan, but that would require us to buy massive amounts of canderon to fuel them all.

Furthermore, your strategy as a whole is flawed, and not one I would support. You're talking about a protracted siege or possibly a blitzkrieg type battle of totally overwhelming enemy resistance in a given area with top quality (and thus expensive) units before rolling over the territory in front of them. We're talking about massive, fast moving, simultaneous raids on multiple targets with fast moving ships. Harrying the OQ's industry and logistical structures as a prelude to an actual invasion. We're not all that concerned about wiping out the fortified positions, that can be taken care of by the actual navy proper. This is just about blowing up the ships traveling between worlds and gas harvesting installations and the like, and getting out before the retaliatory fleet can arrive to blow us up. The most we'd be doing is ambushing her fleets in deep space and far from orbit.
>>
>>47642537
The primary goal of raiding is to force attention and resources elsewhere. Damaging industry is just gravy on top. A bonus prize.

If you can send out 50 ships and tie up 200, forcing them to picket strategic positions that means 200 less ships to kill when the two main battle groups clash.
>>
>>47642517
>OQ has stealth ships? Or are you talking about those ships the cortez encountered that vent heat?
Yes he is. In addition to heat venting (which is probably from the reducing the blink flash; some steam clouds are less noticeable); their carapace is some weird sensor-deflecting thing, likely analogous to modern radar-absorbing materials.
>>
>>47642556
Youve misconstrude me on this.

I was not advocating any particular strategy, just on about using more expensive ships.

I think youve lumped two different people together here.

You have a point with the tech, but we know several species as contacts, and already have theirs. Varying exisitng tech is much easier and could fill the hole as a stop gap in the meantime.
>>
>>47642537
Space trench warfare?! Hell naw, man. Space blitzkrieg! Speed is the essence of war. If she's got the larger potential industrial base we focus on taking that away, if the fight draws on we'll need more and more worlds to play catch up while she just struts across those space trenches like a haughty bitch.

Harrassment Fleet 1-10 of these frigates, 15 of these Corvettes. Based around point defense with overwhelming quantities of blasters and kinetic strikes against planetary targets with the railguns. Hopefully a single capital can have its shields downed by weight of fire so the cyclotrons can burn them out and disrupt their counterattack. If theres something they can't easily crack that we need killed, then we leave a cloaked pod in-system as we bug out and then send in the heavy cavalry next time.

This is not based around out-fighting something. It ducks in, fires on high-value ground-based targets and fucks off giggling while the bitch screeches with rage. If they do encounter something too strong for them, they are completely disposable.
>>
>>47642458
Okay, you want me to whip up a rough cut of a design along the lines we're talking about?
>>
>>47642591
Okay first of all, they should all have fusion generators. That will both boost the performance of all ship systems, most notably weaponry. Secondly, that's just too many blasters. They're okay as a general purpose mount, but we need a bit more variety. How about linear particle beams? They can fire constantly, making it easier to hit stuff with them, and they are more effective at tearing up armor.

Otherwise, I'd say you're on the right track here.

Would need to be a heavy stealth varient and equiped with multiple fail safe self destructs though. Planetery defensive fortifications will be a bitch for any low orbit craft.
>>
We also need to improve our income, but with us being so limited in expansion options i believe the best way to gain more resources is the valen market.
>>
>>47642714
Definitely multiple fail safes, I'm thinking quantum thinkers scattered around the ships hull with nukes and nano-bombs.
>>
>>47642677
And it's smaller cousin.

The great thing about LPBs is that they're beam weapons that fire constantly, so hitting a target is as straightforward as simply tracking it. And hey, the Union uses them in fighter craft and in turrets to great effect. If you really think Cyclotrons would work better I can swap em out though.
>>
>>47642728
Tis a shame the Valen have no need for couches.
>>
>>47642728
Well considering our gate tech, it might be time to launch some deep space probes towards more distant stars. Scout out some potential worlds for resources and settlement, then port back the nutrients and metal we need.
>>
>>47642750
Definitely mass scouting OQ and surrounding systems, but the chance to find a planet not inhabited by enemies is very small so i still believe we need bigger trade with the valen.
>>
So I had an idea for a stealthy parasitizing drone.

A mod to the tail adaptation that the blade is replaced with a hypoblade that injects a parasite egg into the target, the egg growing into a full parasite by feeding off the bodies nutrients. An ovipositor like a real world wasp.

The drone would be fly sized ideally or as small as a standard drone could go, stealthy with camouflage and mimetic skin. These Mosquito drones would sneak in to peoples homes or infect people alone at night.

Seem feasible or just silly?
>>
>>47642806
You will have to ask QD that question, i would love it if we could build something like that, massively boost infiltration and just improve non hive live invasions.
>>
>>47642806
Probably feesable, but likely not to be implemented. Any kind of injection like that is prone to discovery when the unknown bug sting is inspected by medical personnel. Will work on less advanced societys though.

Which reminds me: We could have a spore like parasite that grows on enemy drones/creep, appears as just a small bit of ragged/stray chitin (by causing the victims chitin to grow over the spore and shield it from detection). The spore has one job: Psyonics amplification at a special wavelength/frequency well outside normal communication use.

Basically like strapping a loud speaker to the victim and then blasting it full volume with thoughts, forcing the drone into confusion and drowning out orders. Their weaker minds should crumple to it and the thinkers should be blocked out.

When we invade a world we could douse the atmosphere with them mixed in with the usual bioagents and then activate them in a prolonged exposure when the full on assault begins in earnest.

Might only work once or twice, but if we invade multiple worlds at once and succeed, then thats all we need it to.
>>
>>47642806
I think QD once suggested that injecting eggs into a human body willy nilly like that would be bad for the person, as hatching would cause catastrophic damage to the surrounding tissues. If you want stealthier parasites, why not just make a variant with wings? They already have the memetic skin and camo adaptations to escape CIT scans and the like, and being almost as stealthy and mobile as a fly means we could infest anyone who sleeps near an open window or air vent.
>>
>>47642858
They could also probably double team. One drone bites the neck to establish direct control, then the other goes to burrow in and heal behind itself. The control drone flies off.
>>
>>47642943
If the control drone can convincingly heal over the bite marks once it's done, that would be incredibly effective. Otherwise I guess we could get the flies to shoot up the victim soon to be adopted human, with a cocktail of anesthetics and paralysis drugs.

We can easily expand south and south east.

Potential drone design:

Short-circuit Drone

Radio: Advanced 6N 3M (?)
Electrical:Advanced 3N 2M (?)
Psionic: Basic
Mandible: Biological Interface 20N (?)
Blade: Combat 1N
Arms: Strength 1N
Legs: Endurance 1N
Wings: Moderate flight 2N
Utility: Acid Gland 1N
Utility: Tail 6N (?)
Blade: Hypodermic 1N (?)
Carapace: Conductive 4N 15M
Carapace: Bio-electrical 8N 15M
Chassis: Aerodynamic 4N 10M
Size: Small (x.25)
Cost: 14N 11M
Upkeep: 7N

A support drone meant to short-circuit electrical currents in enemy technology, such as disabling a command deck or a generator’s power. Maybe fry nerves for enemy drones.

I'm making a lot of guesswork on this. The advanced electrical and radio senses would be to pinpoint electrical currents and machinery to disrupt, but I don't know if it needs to be advanced at all, or if radio is even needed. I put biological interface and a tail with hypodermic blade since I don't know if combat is sufficient. Very much a WIP.

On another note, maybe we need more gunship designs. besides the shuttle, it has been the most neglected of the hull types.
>>
>>47643153
As a general rule of thumb, it's always a good idea to take a single specific role or niche you want a drone to fill and focus on it, rather than giving it a bunch of costly adaptations that it would never use in that role. Like, if this drone is designed to locate and jam radio signals, which think is the case, there is no need for biological interfaces or hypodermic tails. Those are purely for taking people down or jacking into their bodies. If you're trying to make an effective radio jammer, I'm not sure a small body size is the best way to go about it, especially since you can't add armor to small drones. Also if we're going with an aerodynamic body plan, which basically turns drones into airplanes, why not go for advanced wings?

Don't let me discourage you though, this is a role we could probably use to great effect in our espionage attempts on the Union.

>>47643234
Alright then.

Sight: Basic
Olfactory: Basic
Acoustic: Basic
Electrical: Moderate 2N
Psionic: Basic
Mandible: Combat 1N
Blade: Combat 1N
Arms: Strength 1N
Legs: Endurance 1N
Wings: Moderate flight 2N
Utility: Acid Gland 1N
Carapace: Conductive 4N 15M
Carapace: Bio-electrical 8N 15M
Chassis: Aerodynamic 4N 10M
Size: Small (x.25)
Cost: 6N 10M
Upkeep: 3N

Already looks better.

Gunship design:

Fireship

Hull: Gunship 60N 250M
Capacity: 10/1
Size: 30 Meters
Fixed: Plasma Lance 20M
Auxiliary: Auto Cannon Alt. Ammo (incendiary) 20M
Missile Cells: Swarm
Armor: Conductive 45N 150M
Cost: 105N 440M
Upkeep: 52N

A gunship with emphasis on dealing thermal damage. Can be used to support ground forces. Might have some use against hive creep.
>>
>>47643604
Seems useful for the OQ creep, will definitely use in the invasion.
>>
>>47643604
If you intend to use that against OQ, I'd recommend you swap out the conductive armor for reflexive. She has not yet actually developed any energy weapons of her own, and instead relies entirely on kinetic based weaponry.

>>47643270
Looks a lot better, but why did you get rid of the advanced senses? I thought that would be one of the most important adaptations for it's role. Also we can't equip small drones with any form of protective armor, so there isn't much point in including a conductive carapace.
>>
>>47643683
The conductive carapace was because of potential energy damage it might receive from sabotaging power lines and the like. Plus it would also power the bio-electrical carapace as well.

As for the ship, done. And I'll add it to the talk page.
>>
>>47643819
Good man, I was thinking we should get a topic going dedicated to coming up with invasion plans as well. Sound like a good idea to you?
>>
>>47643870
Sure. A new topic underneath "Lyle's new suit" should do it.
>>
>>47641842
Wait, is QD unavailable this Sunday or next Sunday?
>>
>>47643929
Make sure to read the end of Thread 53.6 for everything that was suggested.
>>
>>47643977
Next week.
>>
>>47644010
So he won't run in the 19th day.
Thanks for clarifying.
>>
Well I was thinking we should start expanding to more planets.
To start preparing for war we should first find some insignificant rock in our home system and turn it in to a forge world have it completely dedicated to ship building.
Then start a project to make a crop plant that uses heat instead of light for making food.
Then we just send our ships out have them land on what world's the can dig to a geo-thermal vent and start farming we can then teleport the excess minerals and nutrition to our forge world for making ships
>>
>>47644045
>Well I was thinking we should start expanding to more planets.
Agreed, all those unknown systems to the south of our territory in >>47640684 are perfect for expansion.
We should also set up a major colony on Tannhauser; that joins up our territory, allows us to easily interact with the Valen of the expanse, and could also be where our public "base" is whenever we reveal ourselves to the humans and Valen.
>>
>>47644168
Kinda disagree with Tannhauser, i want to buy it for the skyl and not set up a base besides something for diplomacy.
>>
>>47644168
Oh and it's perfect for our public base, since that is where the Valen are building a gate, so it makes it easier for anyone using their gate system to interact with us.
>>
>>47640684
Who is yellow?
>>
>>47644185
I don't think the Skyl care, but maybe we should ask them first instead of assuming they want it? and the Valen with the help of the humans are already setting up base there. We don't want anyone to know where our real home world is, even though they can guess it's Leeland, but it's still better to hide it for as long as possible.
Either way whether the Skyl, Valen, or anyone else is there we should still set up a base there since it's right in the middle of our territory.
>>
>>47644222
Skyl
>>
>>47644185
>>47644189
>>47644249
And I specifically chose Tannhauser because that is where the Valen gate is being built. We need to have a greater presence there to observe the gate being built, and then once it is built it would be easier to use and interact with the Valen if we have a base there. We don't have to reveal ourselves immediately.
