You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

Currently, you've managed to apprehend Artya, who turns out to have been part of your sister Carly's pirate crew. This gave you a prime opportunity to lure your wayward sister out and confront her directly. However, there was the issue of whether you wanted to report this to your superiors first or not. If you did, you'd be able to enlist some more help. However, if they knew your sister was a pirate... that could complicate things down the line...

"Captain, everything's packed up and ready to go." Bradford announces over the comms. "Amy's getting ready to set course. Where do you want to go?"

>Head back to HQ. We need to get Artya properly processed.

"We need to start setting up our 'reunion' with Carly." You say to your First Mate. We need to pick a good place we can engage her at, if needed."

"Captain, I highly suggest that we report this back to-"

"They don't need to know." You cut him off. "This is something we can handle on our own. You remember we're allowed a wide amount of discretion, right?"

"Of course, Captain." Bradford nods, forced to defer to your judgment.

"Now, Elizabeth." You turn to your resident spy. "You know the lay of the land here better than any of us. You know of any good places to stage an ambush?"

"Well, that would depend." Elizabeth puts a finger to her chin. "There are places that are full of space debris that we can hide in, but generally pirates are much better suited to fighting in those conditions. They're the ambush specialists, after all. Luring her into open space would be the better bet, but she'd see us much sooner and would have a chance to run if she wanted to. Plus, we don't even know the capabilities of her ship."

"Hmmm, that's true." You frown.

"I mean, we could always try to interrogate that Artya girl again, if she's willing to talk." Elizabeth shrugs.

"Hm, well, I guess we can go through another round of questioning with Arty first, get the lowdown on Carly's ship." You nod as you call up the infirmary. "Natalia, how's our patient doing?"

"She's stable." Natalia responds smoothly. "Undergoing treatment right now."

"Is she in a condition to talk?"

"Hm, well, I suppose I can wake her up, yes." Natalia confirms.

"All right, we're heading down now." You tell her. Get her ready."

"Of course, Captain."

"Captain, who exactly do you plan to get to talk to her?" Elizabeth asks before you leave. "The choice of who asks the questions is just as important as the question itself..."

"I'll handle it, thanks." You say to Elizabeth. You were absolutely sure that Elizabeth would get answers, but what you weren't too sure about was her methods. You didn't actually want to HURT Artya or anything.

And there was no way you were going to leave her along in a room with Tank. You weren't sure why, but just the thought of it made you incredibly angry.

You return to the infirmary, where you find Natalia and Tank both standing watch over Atya's unconscious body, now clothed in a medical gown and covered in a blanket. You could see some tubes and sensors attached to her body, but otherwise she looked perfectly fine. Her gas mask was still worn over her face, with Natalia apparently not bothering to take it off.

"Ah, Captain." Natalia nods as you approach. "I'll begin administering the awakening agent. She'll be up and about in a minute or two."

Tank then steps up, asking whether you wanted a guard detail.

You look at him and then back at Artya. Even if it was Tank, you were sure that heaving multiple people confronting her would just scare or agitate Artya...

"All right, you two can stay here and keep an eye on her." You nod to Tank and Natalia. "Just... just don't make her feel cornered, all right? At least keep SOME distance."

"As you wish, Captain." Natalia smiles.

Tank salutes.

You decide to undo the restraints on Artya. You wanted to her believe that she was a guest, not a prisoner. Natalia and Tank shoot your curious looks, but a confident nod from you reassures them that you know what you're doing.

Artya then begins to stir, her masked head slowly and blearily rising as she came back to her sense. You back off a bit to give he some space as Artya finally takes in her surroundings. The scavenger girl then freezes when she remembers her predicament, but to her credit and your relief, she doesn't try and sudden moves. Instead, she sits there, the blank lenses in her mask staring at you. You gently hand back her small homemade datapad. She quickly snatches it out of your hand and starts typing furiously on it.

WHERE AM I?

"Still on the ship." You tell her.

Artya's head swivels around, realizing she's still in the infirmary and seeing Tank and Natalia standing behind you like sentinels.

ARE YOU GOING TO KILL ME?

"Oh, of course not!" You shake your head. "I just want to ask some questions about my dear sister."

I WON'T TALK. Artya declares. I'M NOT A SNITCH.

"Artya," You take a deep sigh, letting all semblance of military order and discipline flow out of your body like water. You were no longer an officer of the Accord Navy. You were just a girl looking for her long lost sister. "I just want to find my sister. That's all I'm asking. Can you help me out on this?"

Artya pauses and just stares at you with her blank lenses, as if trying to figure out whether you were being genuine with this or not. Thankfully, the fact that you were asking as a PERSON and not a SOLDIER seemed to appease her somewhat.

PROMISE YOU WON'T HURT HER?

"Why would I want to?" You raise an eyebrow. "I'll probably spank her ass till it turns into a red giant, but I just want to get her home."

Artya seems to pause, as if trying to come to terms with the competing interests of helping her Captain's sister as well as not being a snitch at the same time.

OKAY. ONE QUESTION. Artya writes. JUST ONE.

"I need to know more about her ship." You tell her. "It's strengths, its weaknesses, so I know how to best fight and disable it."

Artya looks at you, most likely with an incredulous expression behind her mask.

"Look, I think we both very well know that Carly isn't going to take the diplomatic route, even if it's me involved, so we'll have to accept we'll be shooting at each other at some point. Telling me about her ships will give us a better chance at ending things quicker and making sure that she doesn't get killed in the process."

Artya continues to have that uncertain body language...

Finally, Arty seems to cave, and her shoulders slump as she taps at her datapad, displaying a small hologram of a ship blueprint. It was a destroyer sized ship, though on the smaller end of the destroyer spectrum. It also looked rather ramshackle.

THE LONG CLAW. Artya explains. A HEGEMONY PROTOTYPE SHIP FELICITY STOLE AND THEN CARLY STOLE.

"So, what exactly can it do?" You frown, examining the blueprint.

PRIMARY ARMAMENT IS MULTIPLE RAPID FIRE HEAVY MASS DRIVER CANNONS. DESIGNED TO OVERWHELM ENEMY DEFENSES. ONLY DRAWBACK IS THAT IT IS FORWARD FACING.

Huh, just like your ion cannon, you suppose.

MISSILE RACKS TO PROTECT THE FLANKS AS WELL.

"Speed? Maneuverability?"

VERY GOOD FOR A HEGEMONY SHIP. WE REMOVED SOME OF THE ARMOR PANELS AND REPLACED THEM WITH SHIELDS TO LOWER WEIGHT.

Well damn. You also get the feeling the Long Claw has more tricks Artya wasn't divulging.

Good, good, roll out all the shitty rolls before combat...

That being said, I wonder what happens if we fire the Ion cannon at her at the same time she fires the mass-driver shots at us. I think the solid shots would be melted, but the kinetic energy would still be somewhat retained as high-speed molten metal. Then again, the ion cannon is probably also better at killing shields while the cannon is meant to go through armor.

"Tank, be on standby. We might need you muscle in the coming reunion. I hope we don't, but..."

Tank nods in understanding.

You then return to the bridge, where the rest of your crew is waiting.

"We'll confront her in a debris field." You say. "Judging from what Artya's said of her ship's capabilities, her arc of fire will be limited. Plus, her ship is based off a Hegemony design, so it's not going to be nearly as fast or as maneuverable as Gullinbursti."

"Are you sure she's telling the truth?" Bradford raises a skeptical eyebrow.

"Artya stands just as much to lose as us if this ship were to explode." You respond coolly.

"Oh great, make my job harder, huh?" Amy groans. "Why can't we fight in space that DOESN'T have obstacles and life threatening navigational hazards for once?"

"Never." You grin momentarily. "Just get us a course to the nearest field.

"Right, right." Amy sighs as she punches in the coordinates and the Gullinbursti makes the FTL jump.

As expected, the Gullinbursti materializes in front of a large asteroid field, with plenty of rocks large enough to hide your ship. You defer to Amy to choose the ideal hiding place, snuggling the Gullinbursti on the dark side of one of the larger asteroids.

"You've started transmitting the signal?" You ask Lida.

"Yep." Lida nods in confirmation. "The beacon's been broadcasting for a while now."

"We've deployed drones and remote sensors, so if she drops into the system, we'll know." Bradford announces.

And that's when Tank appears in the bridge, snapping a salute as he enters.

"Tank? What do you want?" You raise an eyebrow.

Tank gives you an intense stare. He wants to take an opportunity to board Carly's ship and bring her back, without having to risk a potentially costly space battle.

Tank nods in understanding. He'll stand by until he's needed.

"Hey, I'm picking something up!" Lida squeaks. "One of the remote sensors just picked up an FTL signature!"

Suddenly, your comm squawks as somebody broadcasts over an open channel.

"ARTYAAAA! WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU WANDER OF TO THIS TIME!??!" You hear a very familiar tomboyish voice roar. "I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU STOWED AWAY ON ANOTHER SHIP BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT THE REACTOR WAS MAKING FUNNY NOISES, I'LL RIP THAT MASK OFF YOUR FACE AND BEAT YOU TO DEATH WITH IT!"

Your whole bridge crew turns to stare at you.

"Yeah... she was always kinda like that." You sigh, feeling your cheeks redden. "Always the loud one."

"Apparently." Bradford shook his head while Elizabeth did her best to cover up her snickering.

"Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Amy cackles.

"Makes me almost sad we gotta shoot up her ship." Elsa sighs.

"Focus, everybody." You growl. "Can we get a line of fire on her ship?"

"We can do the ion cannon and try to aim for their engine block." Elsa shrugs. "But we're gonna need Amy to pull a fast one to get a line of sight on them. With the timing required, I can't guarantee a perfectly accurate shot."

"Can't we just use the missiles?" You suggest. "We don't need direct line of sight for those."

"Slower and less hitting power individually." Elsa warns. "Can't guarantee they'll disable or even damage their ship, especially with all the debris here that can serve as cover for them...

"Hit her with the ion cannon." You say grimly. "We need a guaranteed damaging hit on her. Elsa, I'm trusting you to not completely destroy the whole damn thing."

"Roger that!" Elsa grins as she activates her weapons.

"All right," Amy bites her lip as she throttles up Gullinbursti's engines. "Moving into position in three... two... ONE!"

Gullinbursti's engines roar, and you can feel yourself being pressed back into your seat, as not even the ship's advanced inertial dampers could neutralize all of the G-forces from the ship's raw acceleration. Gullinbursti bursts out from cover and Amy immediately activates maneuvering thrusters to push the ship's nose back down to bring the ion cannon in line with the Long Claw.

"MOTHERFUCKER!" You hear Carly screech, apparently having forgotten to turn off her comms. "EVASIVE! GO EVASIVE-"

You hear what seems like an terrified squeal as the Long Claw immediately pulls a hard left turn to flee for the relative safety of a nearby asteroid.

"Stick to the plan. Hit the ship to disable it." You instruct your gunner.

"Aye aye!" Elsa grins as she settles the aiming reticle over the fleeing Long Claw. She hits the trigger and unleashes a wave of azure blue energy that lances after the pirate ship. It takes barely a second for the ion beam to close the distance, slamming a similarly azure energy shield. You see the shield hold steady long enough for the ship to get to safety behind the asteroid.

"Damn! Their shield took the brunt of the impact!" Elsa curses.

"That had to have built up a lot of flux in their reactor, though." Lida points out. "A small destroyer like that shouldn't have much capacity."

"It's not as crippling to them as to us." Bradford warns. "Their weaponry doesn't generate nearly as much flux to operate as ours."

"Incoming!" Lida snaps.

Sure enough, a volley of missiles blossoms from the behind the asteroid, undoubtedly an effort by Carly to distract you and shake you off her tail. You had to admit, it wasn't a bad strategy...

"Elsa, fire again!" You bark. "Take out the asteroid!"

"Aye aye!" Elsa hits the fire trigger, unleashing another azure beam of light. The beam drills into the asteroid the Long Claw is using as makeshift cover, and you can see the rock glow red and literally boil from the heat before exploding, spraying debris and molten rock in all directions. A secondary benefit was that the sudden explosion eliminated most of the missile swarm as well.

However, what you're met with is the front end of the Long Claw, its numerous forward mounted mass drivers flashing as they fire.

We have half of our total Flux left, Flux that is also used for our shields. Let's not risk using it up completely by both using the Ion cannon and potentially also taking the remaining bits of the molten rounds the mass driver fired at us. Besides, since we'd be firing from the front, wouldn't we hit them directly, as opposed to their engines like we planned to?

"Amy! Go evasive!" You bark. "Get us out of their line of fire!"

"Gotcha!" Amy grunts as she pulls back on the control yoke. Gullinbursti immediately noses up and away from from the Long Claw, narrowly dodging the first volley of mass driver rounds.

"Launching missiles!" Elsa takes the initiative. Gullinbursti's missiles cells mounted on her flanks spit fire as the smart missiles are set free, immediately locking onto the approaching Long Claw, forcing it to decide whether to use its massive forward firepower to continue attacking you, or intercepting the missiles.

Thankfully, your sister chooses the latter option, and the line of mass driver tracers widens up into a cone to maximize missile interception. Explosions ripple in space as numerous missiles explode prematurely from the wall of mass driver rounds, but a few manage to slip in and smash against Long Claw's already overtaxed shield.

"Heh, you're a really slippery bastard, ya damn Accord hippie." You hear Carly grumble over the open comms.

You decide not to answer her taunt. You needed all of your focus on winning this battle. It was a tough thing, trying to disable a ship without utterly destroying it. Especially when your primary weapon was geared for maximum stopping power.

"Bradford, options?" You ask your First Mate for advice.

"It looks like they've taken down their shield to save on flux." Bradford notes as he glances at his tactical display. "I think that if we can get in close, another missile volley will be able to cripple their ship."

"That's dangerous, especially since our own flux levels are pretty high." Elsa grunts. "I say we try and get another angle for the ion cannon!"

"Get in close and use the missiles!" You command.

"Roger!" Amy grunts as she pushes forward on the control yoke, slingshotting the Gullinbursti around a rather large asteroid and bringing the nose back in line with the Long Claw. The pirate ship seems to be expecting the move, as it swings its own nose around and lets loose with a flurry of mass driver shells, pounding Gullinbursti's shields relentlessly. However, the shields hold, at least for now. Amy keeps up the speed, taking the Gullinbursti past the Long Claw's nose so that both yours and Carly's ships were side by side.

"FIRE!" You bark.

Elsa cackles a she lets loose another volley of missiles. This close, there's no way the Long Claw could intercept them, and you see the explosive tear into the pirate ship's hull, lighting fires and ripping and melting armor plating. However, the Long Claw's origins as a Hegemony ship prove true, as the hull stays intact despite dozens of missile impacts.

However, that doesn't mean Long Claw had no means of retaliating. The pirate ship fires off its own volley of missiles directly into Gullinbursti's shields. You flux meter shrieks as your reactor works to keep the defense barrier maintained.

"We're taking hits!" Bradford words.

"Shields are still intact." Lida reports. "Serious hull damage on the enemy ship."

"They're bleeding! We can beat 'em in a slugfest!" Elsa whoops happily.

>>
What I learned from this thread:

Sam can be really fucking pragmatic/ruthless when it comes to family matters.

Of course, Blood is thicker than water afterall anon, We can't let family be pirates or let them escape again.
>>
>>47737543
Carly really fucked up with her life choices, time to DISCIPLINE her in our father's stead.
>>
>>47737543
She takes no chances at all when it comes to Carly. Hell, she's more ruthless than when she was dealing with mere pirates.

"Continue the assault!" You bark. "Keep pelting them!"

"Roger that!" Elsa cackles as she keeps queuing more missiles to be launched. More missiles plunge into the Long Claw's armor, creating deep pits and rents in the hull armor. The Long Claw had to be on its last legs now-

"HAHAHAHA! YA STUPID GIT!" Carly cackles as the Long Claw turns, not away, but TOWARD the Gullinbursti.

"Fuck!" Amy curses as she tries to maneuver to avoid, but this close, she simply doesn't have the time.

"Brace for impact!" Bradford yells.

Your ship's shield flickers for a brief moment as the Long Claw impacts it, but it collapses since it simply wasn't meant to hold back so much mass. The Gullinbursti shudders and you can hear a metallic shriek as the Long Claw's hull scrapes along the Gullinbursti's. And then the ship shudders.

"They're mag locked onto us!" Lida warns. "I think they're trying to board!"

>Amy, shake them off!
>Then let them come.
>Tank, let's bring the fight to them!

Yeah, I might have parsed that wrong. Even still, we're playing Sam a like a renegade.

>>47737543
And maybe this guy has a point.

>>47737558
We have no clue what's going on in her head. Who knows why she became a pirate? Secret government experiments? Maybe she's never going back.

>Heavy Armor Sam vs. Light Armor Carly with clothing damage

>the crews of both ships just sorta stop fighting each other and fraternize while watching their captains go at each other (which devolves from a serious fight to a catfight between siblings)

"Ha, they played right into our hands." You grin madly. The rest of your crew looks at you nervously, as if you've gone crazy or something, but you don't care as you casually activate your comms.

"Tank?"

Tank clicks back an acknowledgement.

"It's time."

Tank clicks back again. He's ready and waiting.

You give a full toothy smile.

I think she'd be a stronger ally if we didn't try to break her. And yeah, Carly's got options. Right now she's boarding and taking the fight to us. I don't think this is as easy as you think.

Can't wait to see how they'll react to each other.

"Wow, Sam, I didn't know you were into the kind of clothing that hugs you."
"At least I have something that covers more than 40% of my body, Carly."
