"So, what's his name?"

Barely a moment seems to have passed since she and I were roughly shoved out of her mistress' house with barely a clue what was going on, and without a moment spent on introductions, and already the young witch is asking this strange question of nowhere with a playful smile on her lips.

"Well?" She demands, leaning uncomfortably close to my face.

"Uhh..." I look awkwardly from side to side as I try to decipher the meaning of her mysterious question, but I still have no idea who she's asking about. Unless...

"Oh! You mean him!" I hold up the toad I saved - I'll probably have to figure out what to do with him - so she can get a closer look. "He doesn't have a name yet!"

"Bwah!" She exclaims, recoiling from him with a look of disgust on her face. "Don't shove that icky thing in my face! I only just got turned back from one of those disgusting creepers!"

"Huh? Then why did you ask about him?"

"Not the toad, you weirdo! The boy!"

"Wha-? What boy? There's nobody here!"

The girl, Cinnamon's her name according to Redleaf, rolls back her eyes with a groan.

"THE boy, dummy! That's why anyone becomes a witch, for love! So, what's his name?"

"Buh-wuh-buh-boy? Luh-luh-LOVE?" That's so not okay to just ask somebody!

"Oh jeez, you're one of those, then? One of those girls..." She leans close again, even closer, whispering into my ear. "...that love girls?"

"NO!" I scream, Cinnamon immediately falling back and holding her ear in pain. "Don't say that kind of... that kind of... STUFF!"

"Eesh, fine." She grimaces as she gets back on her feet, brushing off her red-and-gold dress and readjusting the same-colored witch hat that's-super-awesome-but-I'm-totally-not-jealous-not-even-a-little-nope.

"You don't have to go so crazy over a little teasing, you know!" She turns quickly on the spot, her long brown hair flowing freely behind her as she does so. "You'll never make a proper rival if you don't grow some thick skin, you know!"

"Rival?"

"Now come on so we can get you home!" She completely ignores my question and sets off toward the path that apparently leads down the mountain, leaving me little choice but to follow.

"Wait for me!"

She glances down at my hands as I catch up to her, revulsion washing over her face. "Aren't you gonna get rid of that?"

"Oh right, the toad! I guess I should..."

"Take him down to the forest and let him go."

"Bleh!" She sticks out her tongue mockingly at the toad, who quickly returns the grimace. Apparently taking offense to this, she turns her head with a angered "Hmph!"

"It's just a stupid toad, you might as well get rid of it now."

"Toads don't live on mountains! He'd starve up here! He needs to be in a forest with lots of food!"

Cinnamon just shrugs in resignation. "Don't really see why you care so much, but whatever. I'm not the one who has to touch it."

"Of course I care! Toads are people too!"

"That's not true at all."

"Oh yeah? Then how come you're a person even though-"

"THAT'S DIFFERENT!" She yells, crossing her arms angrily. "MAGIC DOESN'T COUNT!"

"Maybe he was cursed too! You don't know!"

She opens her mouth to yell once more, only to stop and fall silent again. A moment later she lets out a sigh of defeat.

"Whatever... Urgh, why'd you have to go and remind me of that, anyway?" She shivers for a moment in displeasure, then continues. "I'm never getting this icky taste out of my mouth..."

I don't know what to say to that, really. She was acting so energetic, it didn't occur to me that she might still be feeling bad after being 'unfrogged'. We continue walking in uncomfortable silence for a while, following the path leading back down to the forest, a combination of stone steps and dirt path. Fortunately, it's wide enough that I can lean against the inside wall and not look down at the long way down.

And the steps are surprisingly well kept considering they only lead to the one house, too. Especially since Redleaf could just fly down if she wanted to go anywhere. Unlike Cinnamon, it seems, who's quietly walking every step as if she had walked it a hundred times before. But while she may be content with the silence, I can't take another minute of it!

"So uhm..." I need to think of something to say.

"What's his name?"

"What?" She replies with a mix of confusion and surprise in her voice, as if she was already expecting me not to talk for the rest of the climb.

"That's what you asked me, right? So it's only fair that I get to ask too!"

She let's out a short groan of annoyance, then replies. "Jerkface."

"Whu- hey! If you don't want to tell just say that instead of calling me bad names!"

"Not you." She sighs, not in annoyance this time, but... Sadness? "Stupid Selfish Jerkface Who Doesn't Care About Others. That enough of a name for you or do you want his last name too?"

"Nuh-nuh-no, that's okay..." With how that was going I don't think I'd like to hear the rest at all!

"Sorry." Is all I can say.

"Why?" She asks flatly. "You're not the jerk. Moons know you're a pretty weird girl, but you're pretty cool. Nothing to be sorry for."

"...Cool?" Did she just compliment me? Even though just a few minutes ago she talked about rivalry?

"Well yeah. I mean..."

"Okay, you can't tell anyone right? But while I was, you know, I kinda managed to sneak out and watch the old hags bully you. And trust me, it's TOTALLY weird that you just hugged Sylph like that when you've only just met her, even if she did it first."

I just thought she needed a-

"But the way you told all of those old hags off just like! Wow! It's like you didn't care how they could've crushed you to paste right there!"

"...what?"

"Or turned you into a rock who could only sit there and watch for thousands of years, praying that someone will pick you up and throw you so you can at least look at something SLIGHTLY different for a while."

"...whuh?"

"Or cursed you into a personal nightmare you'd never wake up from again! Haha, maybe they'll even come to you in your dreams just to take revenge?"

"No wuh-wuh-way... They wouldn't do that... Would they?"

"Who knows, haha! Oh well, I guess we'll find out soon, right?"

"But does The Fearless Robin care about any of that? Haha, nope, you pick on the weak and all she'll care about is..."

Her face is painted by a wide, cheerful smile as she turns to me, only for that smile to evaporate as she sees my face, which I can only imagine to be paler than a corpse at this point. Only for a moment though, as her smile quickly returns with a laugh.

"Oh! Haha, I guess she cares after all, huh? Haha, don't worry, I'm sure they'll back off if you give them a telling-off like you did back there!"

"Ah... haha, right..." I'm never sleeping again. We really need to change the topic here!

"But uhm, if you think that then... why did you talk about that 'rival' stuff?"

"Well duh! Obviously we have to be rivals!"

"But... doesn't that mean... enemy?"

"Eh? No no! Nothing like that! Rivals can be friends! No, rivals means we COMPETE!"

"...Compete?"

"Yeah! To be the best apprentice! There's no other apprentices for miles and miles, but this way we'd have someone to compare ourselves against! I mean I know you only just started and need some time to catch up, but don't worry! I play fair, always!"

That doesn't sound as bad. I guess it might be fun. But more importantly... "So you mean you still want to be friends?"

"Eh? What?" She seems taken aback by my question. Fortunately we've finally reached the bottom right at the eastern edge of the forest so it's okay for her to stumble a bit. Is it really such a weird thing to ask, though? It seems natural to me...

"I mean uh, sure, I guess, but I don't get why y-"

"Yay!" I leap forward to embrace her in a new-friends-hug. "Witch friends! And uh, rivals!"

"Haha..." She laughs nervously. "You really are a bit of a weirdo."

"Anyway, from here it's not too far to Hinde. That was where you live, right? But uh, thing is, I'm uh, in a bit of a hurry to get home, so are you okay to walk the rest of the way alone?"

"Well uh, sure, I can find my way easily."

"Great! Oh but uhm, do you have anything to defend yourself with?"

"Huh? Defend? What do you mean? There's nothing dangerous in the forest to worry about!"

"Uhh..." She stares at me awkwardly. "You know this is THE peak season for monsters, right?"

"Monsters?"

"Yeah you know, animals and plants transformed by all the falling sparkles from the Joining? You did at least notice THAT, right? It was kinda the whole point of the rite we had to go through..."

"I never knew about that! I've never even seen one of those before!"

Her eyes continue to widen in bewilderment. "That's... lucky I guess? Anyway," She reaches into her backpack, pulling out... another, smaller pack?

"You know what, you can have my emergency pack since I have no forest to walk through on the way home. And you'd be a terrible rival if you got eaten by a landworm or something."

"Uh, thanks?" I let the toad, who totally feels like an Albert, loose near a tree so I can accept the pack. "But uhm, what's an emergency pack?"

"Ah, just stuff I whipped up in case of, well, all kinds of stuff! Don't worry, I labelled them all so just grab whatever you need and throw it at the problem. Easy!"

She winks confidently as she explains, then turns on the spot and starts running off towards the farms to the East. "Anyway, gotta hurry! See you next time! And say hi to your sister from me!"

"Whu- You know my sister?!" I call after her, but she doesn't answer.

Oh well, I'll ask her next time. I should hurry on back home.

Well, I should hurry too actually. If I take too long the sun will start setting and Papa will start worrying. No time for detours. Roads are for merchants anyway, I don't need them!

Besides, even if Cinnamon says otherwise, I've lived here all my life and never seen any monsters so I'm sure there's nothing to be scared of. Especially with her 'emergency pack'. Speaking of which, maybe I should see what's actually in it.

...

Okay so it's all bottles and vials of... stuff. Not anything that I recognize yet, though, as she promised they ARE labelled. But the labels are kind of simple, all of them just one-word descriptions.

'HIDE'

'BOOM!'

'FIRE'

'SMALL'

'BIG'

And one of is just labelled 'FUN!' including the exclamation mark! I have no idea what this does! Now I really hope I won't have to use any of these...

But then, I've spent lots of time in this forest. Sure, until recently I only went here with Amalia, but I definitely know my way around here, especially this close to town. There's nothing that can surprise me here, so no chance of anything happening to slow me down.

Woah, wait, when did this cave in the mountainside appear? Has it always been here? I've never noticed it before...

Well, it doesn't really matter anyway, I'm on my way home so there's no reason I should stop to-

"AHA!" A voice suddenly calls from within!

"Great timing, Naddie! Exactly who I was looking for!"

Wait, that's...

"Sis! What are you doing here?"

"No time!" She declares. "This is an emergency!"

"Wuh? Emergency?" Haven't I heard this word just recently?

"Yes! Someone has KIDNAPPED Amy and we need to save her!"

"WHAT?"

"They're definitely in this cave!" She announces, pointing to the only cave in sight. "But I can't search the entire cave alone so you need to help!"

"Wait what, why me?" I try to object as she grabs me by the hand and begins dragging me towards the cave.

"No time to go back for help!" She yells as she continues unhindered by my protests.

"But how am I supposed to-"

"Use that!" She points to a rolled out cloth lying by the mouth of the cave, on it a couple of small torches and a... practice sword made of wood? That's convenient, I guess, but...

"But how do you even know they're in here?"

"No time to explain!" She commands, then grabs the first torch in the hand she was previously dragging me along by.

"I'll take the left path," She explains, pointing forward to a point just a few steps inside the cave where the path splits in two. "And you take the right! Questions?"

"Uhm, why did you bring this stuff? I mean you couldn't have known I'd-"

"No time!" She interrupts, then begins rushing down the path she pointed out. She hasn't even lit her torch so how will she know where to go..?

Okay, this is... really weird. I'm not really sure this is real and not just a dumb prank or something, but if it's Amalia, I really can't take the chance. If she really WAS in danger and I didn't help... That'd be completely unforgivable! No, friends help friends, even when things get really weird and don't make any sense. No, especially when things get really weird and don't make any sense!

Right so, the torch is for lighting, that's obvious. I can probably use vials labelled 'FIRE' to light it, since I don't see anything else she left me to use.

And the practice sword... On one hand, I'm glad she didn't leave me a real sword of iron, I hate those, but how will this actually help me? Even if I knew how to fight, this thing can't hurt anybody! Hopefully the 'emergency pack' can help me if it comes to that?

Now, Cinnamon said to just throw the vial at the 'problem', so if I throw the 'fire' vial at the torch it should definitely light it.

After removing the cloth the torch is lying on. I definitely didn't almost forget that. Haha. Ha. Anyway, let's try and see what-

"WAAH!"

That's a lot more fire than I expected! The torch is lit so that's nice I guess, but why is the rock around it still on fire? Rocks aren't supposed to burn! It must be something in the vial? So it's probably fine to leave it like that, right? It should go out on its own in a couple of minutes when the liquid is all burned away! Which means...

I'm ready to go!

Hee, it's actually a little exciting now. I bundle up the cloth and put it in my bag, since it might be useful eventually, grab the practice sword too even though I don't know what to do with it and set out with the torch in hand. I was supposed to go right... Right?

>1/2
>>
>>48130853
The cave path begins sloping downward after just a short distance, quickly teaching me the first lesson of cave exploration. Watch your step! If I'd fallen with this torch in hand I might have burned myself! But I only stumbled a little, so everything's definitely fine. Not scared at all! Not like there's any vengeful 300 year old witches in here looking to curse me or eat my skin or...

"Woah!"

I can't be more than five minutes into the cave and I already see a light ahead. And that means someone is there, right? And if what Sis said is true...

They might not be very friendly.

I don't hear any movement or anything down there, so if someone IS there, they must not have noticed me yet. I'm pretty sure that's a good thing!

But what should I do then?

>Call out, if someone's there they might be willing to talk.

Looks like we'll be taking the standard, cautious approach. That one doesn't require a roll!
>>
>>48131236
Worry.
>>
>>48130872
I COULD try to sneak closer without the torch, but I don't want to risk tripping and making myself vulnerable. It's probably safer to just approach carefully and slowly, and if someone notices, well, at least I'll be prepared to respond... With something.

The light ahead is coming from somewhere behind a corner, so I figure I should stay close to the wall to make myself as hard to notice as possible. Slowly, and very, very, quietly I make my way towards the light, still hearing absolutely nothing all the way. Maybe nobody is there at all? Or they're just really, really quiet.

I take a deep breath to prepare myself, getting ready to take a peek around the corner and face whatever lies beyond, when, suddenly a soft but cold voice calls out.

"Step into the light, witchling."

Eek! She saw me? But wait, how does she know that I'm-

"Now." The voice demands. Looks like I have no choice.

The owner of the voice turns out to be a woman... of sorts anyway. She's tall, though not nearly as tall as Mistress, and armed with a cold, uncaring stare, in addition to a sword kind of like the one Sis has but much thinner. Her or Papa would probably know what it's called, but the important part is it looks dangerous!

Her ridiculously long, blonde hair sways gently from a weak wind blowing through the cave that I only just noticed as I looked at her, and her armor seems to be a kind of fancyful 'pretty' armor kinda like what Sister has, and not like the plain armor the guards in town use.

But most important, her ears are really huge, not like any I've ever seen before! With ears like those she must have heard me even before I entered the cave! Could she be some kind of monster? It might be a good idea to try to talk instead of-

"There will be no words." She states, as if she had read my mind. She raises her sword, pointing it straight at me. "Come, witchling."

"Uhm, can't we- WUAH!" Before I can finish, she lunges toward me with lightning-quick moves. I only narrowly manage to get out of the way of her sword!

This is bad! I can't fight someone like THAT normally! Now I'm really glad Cinnamon left me this emergency pack! You'd almost think she KNEW something like this would happen!

Barely evading her second swing, I reach into the pack and quickly grab one of the vials labeled 'HIDE' and smash it into the ground. Immediately, a stream of thick, dark smoke rushes forth from the broken vial, making it almost impossible to see anything. Once the smoke clears I'll have to fight her, but for now I can come up with a plan to beat her!

>Throw a 'BOOM!' potion at her. That's bound to be something good, right?
>Throw a 'SMALL' potion at her. She'd be easier to fight if she was smaller!

Gotta be training cause no way would Nadja manage to dodge like that in a real fight, haha.

Friend, why make a vote with only one option?

Man, FIRE would be terrible.

Would a small elf be a good familiar? They aren't people so it might work.

Looks like we already have a clear winner. Please roll 1d20 to see how good Nadja is at throwing!

Well, it could be worse at least!

It certainly could, but unfortunately that does not guarantee that it is good enough.

Double 15! Better than last time, but not spectacular.

Now please wait patientlyuntil next thread.

Yeah.

I'm really sorry, I didn't actually mean to end the thread on THIS cliffhanger, but my headache has been growing more intense over the evening and I just don't feel I can keep running any longer.

If it's any consolation, I strongly suspect I will be able to run at least once this coming weekend, so you won't have to wait too long?

Sorry again, and thanks for playing with me tonight!

See you next time when we (hopefully) rescue Amalia!

Believe in small elf!

Thanks for running Friend.

Nooooo
Thanks for running Friend! It was fun!

Thanks for the thread.
Are elves quite rare around here then, if Nadja hasn't seen one before?

Let's put it this way: Mistress knows they exist, but has never encountered one.
>>
>>48132574
Wow, sis is amazing to have such exotic acquaintances! Hopefully.
>>
Since we know Nadja isn't entirely human. Could it be sis isn't one as well, or maybe she had a witch conjure her up so she could have a little sister?
>>
>>48132758
>maybe she had a witch conjure her up so she could have a little sister

That's pretty cute
>>
>>48133003
Just like Nadja!

The plot thickens...
>>
>>48132591
>Acquaintances
>kidnapping friends
Impossible! She would never put Amalia in danger!
>>
>>48133216
Well, acquaintance doesn't necessarily mean friend...
>>
>>48133216
Amalia might not actually be here, let alone kidnapped.
>>
>>48133286
But if you know someone, how can you not be their friend?

>>48133299
Are you implying that Nadja's sister would lie to her?!
>>
>>48133334
>But if you know someone, how can you not be their friend?
Truly, this is a great mystery.
>>
>>48133334
>Are you implying that Nadja's sister would lie to her?!
yes, because Nadja wouldn't have gone in otherwise.
