Stage 125: The things that must be done....

You are finally home.

It's taken a while but you feel confident that your home, the penthouse of an apartment building overseen by something older and freakier than any youkai of the Age of Legends would be, is fairly safe and secure. Between your sister, an eminent fortuneteller and seer, your personal seer Er Yin-sensei, and the ancient being that owns the apartment complex, the place has been warded and purified to the point of sterility, if it weren't for the plants, artwork, and other feng shui your sister added to prevent just that. It is a safe haven and a place of warmth, love, and beautiful pastels.

That last was non-negotiable.

You and your wife took a nice long time in the baths getting clean and reacquainted with each other after not having any such opportunities for far too long. You've made the first and most critical arrangements to enforce the will of the Jade Emperor (may he live Ten Thousand times Ten Thousand Years) on the Buddhist demons and devils that your sister inadvertently sicced on you in the interests of preventing her own vision of the doom you will be bringing to Japan. Never mind that you were meant to bring this doom by order of Amaterasu-Omikami's own wishes; your sister wasn't entirely privy to that situation until after the fact, and by then it was too late for a lot of things. Nevertheless her heart is still in the right place and you are very happy that she is with you here, along with newer members of your family such as the slightly dazed enlightened immortal Yuuhi-chan, the keeper of Horobi's underwater palace Shoko, and the handsome and shy tomboy that is the daughter of the kamuy of the hunt and childbirth.
>>
>>48290774
The other members of you close knit and rather strange little clan are equally happy to be home, reunited and safe alike with their own loved ones. While the Edict delivered in the name of the Jade Emperor must take precedence over all, at the moment you've done all you can, even to the point of sending a missive to the Mill Pond Demon, a kappa who could potentially help you to heal Er Yin's spiritual and physical damage. The edict might not forbid you from doing anything else, but at the moment your content to nibble on a mocchi ball and snuggle with Kiki-hime on the couch.

But time will pass, and you do have things on your mind, critical things. Still Kiki-hime is dozing off every few minutes, and the talk has become subdued and earnest. It might be time to take some time to yourself, or to discuss matters of subtle import, rather than exciting and troublesome things.

[] Try and nail down more information on the Mill Pond Demon.
[] Take Kiki-hime to bed and try and sleep for a while.
[] Send Yui-chan and Akari-chan to bed – they've been overworked and injured, respectively.
[] Put Kiki-hime to bed and send Akari and Yui to bed, and talk with the elders of your clan for a bit.
[] Suggest everyone join you and Kiki-hime in the master bedroom and just let everyone relax and bask in each other's presence.

[X] Put Kiki-hime to bed and send Akari and Yui to bed, and talk with the elders of your clan for a bit.
[X] Suggest everyone join you and Kiki-hime in the master bedroom and just let everyone relax and bask in each other's presence.
[X] Try and nail down more information on the Mill Pond Demon.

Some of the side effects of the changes you have been going through aren't all that pleasant to be honest. Not sleeping is something you were capable of before you became – started becoming – what you are now, but that was a matter of necessity or choice. Now you just don't need to if you're spiritually balanced. Same with eating; it's nice, pleasant even, but you don't really need all that much food. Even the pleasant afterglow of you lovemaking only soothed your mind and body; sleep is far away from you at the moment.

Shoko-san, Jinyuu-onee-sama, and Er Yin-sensei don't seem very tired either, and Kiku-chan, settled next to Er Yin's seat, doesn't look sleepy at all. In fact, she seems suspiciously NOT sleepy, and neither of them seems particularly interested in retiring despite how much time they have been apart.

“Why don't we take this to the master bedroom, and all relax there,” you suggest softly, gathering a rather undue amount of attention from most of your family, though Kiki-hime only looks up at you with a mildly quizzical look that has nothing to do with jealousy over spending your first night with the whole clan in your bed. Akari is nonplussed, of course, while Yui almost looks panicked before Akari takes hold of her hand and helps her to stand as she gets off the couch. A single glance and Yui is calming, understanding that her mostly self imposed status as 'servant' is equal to that of her lover, and if she's allowed then Yui herself is allowed. Kiku-chan stands gracefully as well, as does her Master, and you note that Er Yin collects one of the bottle of sake that have been opened as well as a small stack of dishes to drink it with.
>>
>>48291464
Yuuhi-chan's ears prick up, and she beams brilliantly. “Slumber party?!”

“Less fuckin' party and more 'fuckin' slumbering, Yuuhi,” Shoko says calmly as she gets up and bows to you and Kiki-hime as you stand, clearly intending to go to her own bedroom. Inau-kun, you note, seems to have presumed – correctly – that she is invited. Your elder sister also has assumed so. You do happen to note Inau-kun's rather wistful glance at Shoko's readiness to leave. Interesting.

So it's just Shoko. Which makes a certain amount of sense – she tasked herself to service with you, but she hasn't really made herself part of your family – your clan – in fact. And you do need to discuss Yuuhi-chan's position as well. Still....

[] Ask her politely where she thinks she is going; she IS a member of Clan Ryuu.
[] Be firm but gentle – she is NOT excused.
[] Remind her kindly that she is included in “everyone”.
[] Tell her that your bedroom is patently in the OTHER direction.

[X] Tell her that your bedroom is patently in the OTHER direction.
[X] Be firm but gentle – she is NOT excused.
[+] Teasing is an important part of an oni's balanced diet; she can leave later if she wants.

You stand up, picking up your wife in an aptly named princess carry, much to her delight and soft giggles, which makes her jiggle in all sorts of attractive ways. “Shoko-san, that's not where the master bedroom is. I know you've been here long enough to know that.” Inau-kun glances at you gratefully, but you can't wink at her effectively without Shoko catching you.

“But you said I wasn't one of your servants....” she starts, confused. She's technically correct, you did in fact tell her that. But she seems to have neglected the other things you did tel her.

“I said I wasn't Horobi and that I don't hold any particular power over you. I also told Inau-kun that you are part of my household and mine to protect and succor. So you are going to come to bed with the rest of my household and family and relax, have a few drinks, and listen into any discussion we have while the other fall asleep.” She's been home this entire time and probably under a great deal of stress having little to do in a home that she doesn't really feel at home in.

Her eyes are downcast, but the come up blazing when Yuuhi pokes her with the butt of her nodachi. “Told you.” Shoko glares at Yuuhi, but it's only a mild glare.

“Besides, my bed is always better for having yet one more beautiful young woman in it.”

Inau-kun turns her head and lowers her chin, nose held tight, while Shoko splutters meaningfully while you turn and walk towards the bedroom before she can actually say anything. Kiki-hime is giggling again and you nuzzle her horns lovingly as she hugs you. She whispers confidentially, “I think Inau-kun likes our housekeeper....”

“You might be right.”

The others are already making their way into the bedroom, and Yui is carrying a large jar of your plum wine. Kiki smiles at Shoko-san, and Shoko looks abashed at having thought she wasn't invited. You're all too familiar with that special smile, and you've already had to take steps to avoid the paralytic power of it on a couple of occasions.

The bed is already becoming well occupied, though you note that Akari and Yui have already claimed a section near where you and Kiki-hime would be sleeping; you make sure to place Kiki-hime there. Pillows are rearranged, blankets and sheets moved about, glasses filled and you make sure that everyone is given a glass, though Yuuhi sniffs at the potent liquor suspiciously. Sitting cross legged, Kiki-hime leaning against you, your family and friends together once again, you lift your dish of alcohol and the others look to you.

“To Clan Ryuu and our allies; we have come so far, and carried heavy burdens. Our burdens may become greater, but our family and loved ones are more than worth any measure of weight we will carry.” The traditional salute is not loud or boisterous, it is soft but well meant. In the soft light of your bedroom, in a bed so similar to that of your mikoto's reign, you are toasted, with the scent of sandalwood incense, plum wine, hot sake, and cherry blossoms, you are toasted. “Kompai....” You drink as do the others, and the actual settling in begins.

Small talk is small and soft, with much soft laughter and gentle teasing and gentle wit, but eventually it becomes more quiet as Kiki, Akari, Yui, and Yuuhi settle into a soft sprawl of sleep. Inau-kun, yourself, Shoko, your sister, Er Yin and Kiku-chan are awake still. Kiku is in Er Yin's lap, cradling a cup of tea, while her Master strokes her coiling tail absently; Shoko is at the end of the bed, leaning on the edge of the floor rather than the ledge (being taller than everyone else as she is), while your sister is sitting next to you and you are cross legged in the middle of the bed. Inau-kun is sitting on the ledge between Er Yin and Shoko. There's still room for three or four more people.

“So....I have issues with going to the kappa. I'll tell you what I recall of the problems, and please tell me if I get anything incorrect.” Sadly, with your perfect recall, you don't get anything incorrect and when you tell the tales out loud, it only cements the issue when you summarize it. “The seems more and more like a trap laid out by the priestess of Kinashut Kamuy, using the disasters that befell an innocent miller. There isn't any one who can help us better, and the price is something that is going to specific to him and him alone, based on what he is now rather than who he was or what his past is. And what he is now is a very potent, possibly very twisted kappa who is more youkai than anything else.”

The others pretty much nod and make sounds of agreement.

Do NOT contact Hinata-hakase. We're never giving her any pearl. Unless maybe as a punishment for a dragon-child who has been pure, unforgiveable evil.
>>
>>48293070

I still don't get how it's Ryukusa who has to pay for her cousin. HE got himself in this mess, it's not because she suggested "if you go there, you might not die" that she's the one who has to pay the tab.
>>
>>48293125
There's always negotiation. Obviously we wouldn't give up any pearls. She's probably easier to negotiate with safely than the kappa...probably.
>>
>>48293150
>It's Japanese obligation; she informed him that Hinata-hakase could help, she allowed him to live, his life is her responsibility, ergo Hinata-hakase is owed that favor. Likewise, if Hinata-hakase harms him, she would owe Ryukusa instead, for making the offer of sanctuary a lie.

Sorry if I'm rash as fuck, but I can't stress this enough: increasing the amount we owe to Hinata is bad as fuck.

We have to do it, I'm pretty sure, since she waited for the next incarnation of Horobi's mikoto.
>>
>>48293715
We can talk it over with our advisors. If necessary, we can figure out whether we have time to complete the Jade Emperor's request then go down there to heal the screen, or whether we need to send someone down there to do it for us.

I imagine it's not terribly dire, just a question of a bit more defense for our palace and an extra type of ally, in exchange for having to go there or send one of our family there.
>>
>>48293766

We literaly can't go to the palace right now.

[+] What if we prove it's Kinashut's fault?
[+] Why do kappa have healing powers they can grant to others anyways?

“Okay, let me look at my notes.” you summon notebook out of ~Nowhere~ and peruse it, much to the shock and surprise of everyone awake, with the sole except of the person who can't actually see it and doesn't think there's anything written on the pages anyways because she's blind and has more sense than most. You throw it back into nowhere just as quickly and cross your arms. “So, beyond him being a painter and needing paints that would survive underwater which is a stupid idea anyways because he can just paint on land anyways,” which is absolutely true and blows some of the information you got from the remainder of Wakaba's people out of the water (ha ha) and annoys you that you didn't realize it was stupid earlier, “what can we really offer this kappa anyways?”

Though most of them are still dumbfounded that you actually checked notes, Er Yin-sensei speaks up. “Very little, to be honest, Ryukusa-sama. It simply comes down to the problem of not having much in the way of current and reliable information about the Mill Pond Demon as he is now. Everything I showed you was in the past.”

Kiku-chan speaks up. “It is a youkai, and there is no such thing as a predictable youkai, baka dragon. We are lucky we have this information to work with at all. Most youkai are even more inscrutable.”

You frown and tilt your head, looking at nothing in particular. “how is it that kappa are healers, or grant healing powers to others? I've been told about the man who gave the kappa-boy's limb back and was taught medicine, but that parable doesn't really fit with anything else, like sucking people's guts out of their-”

Inau-kun interrupts, her face redder than Akari's eyes. “It comes back to their phenomenal healing ability, Ryukusa-san.” You look up at her quizzically. “Like an immortal, a kappa can regenerate from almost any wound as long as they are touching the water of their birth. Their arms are also strangely detachable and if you can return a stolen arm, they will reward you with their friendship. Kappa are also wrestlers, partly because they have to work so hard to prevent their water from being spilled. So they have become experts at bone setting and joint afflictions, the two most common complaints.”

“A legend, partly based in fact,” Er Yin agrees.

“If you can force it to spill its water, and then refill the bowl, then it will serve you for the rest of your life. That that is something like asking you not to chase skirts,” your elder sister comments mildly, a smile upon her lips as she sips sake from behind her fan. That prompts soft amused laughter and eases the tension a bit.

“I don't chase skirts, I chase what's under them,” you claim loftily, much to your sister's and Inau-kun's embarrassment. “As a long shot, is there any way to prove that his death was the fault of supernatural forces conspiring against him?” You mention no names, but sadly the point backfires.

“You said it yourself – Kinashut's hand is invisible, if it was there at all. It is a youkai, and the kamuy are far older and more subtle in their effects on the world in comparison to a kami,” Inau-kun points out.

“And before you ask, no, Hinata-hakase isn't an option. You said that you owe her already; my Master's injury is terrible, and would require her to use her full power.” You note that Kiku-chan is more open about her master in the present company. Interesting, and rather cute.

“I was going to ask, but that seems a moot point. Is there ANY other option we can explore?” You aren't entirely desperate yet, but you are getting there. A soft moan from behind you prompts you to gently pet Akari's head with your tail, caressing her horn lightly. It seems to relax her enough that she drifts back to sleep.

Inau-kun and Er-Yin speak as one. “Yes.”

All eyes are on them, though Kiku-chan merely looks at Inau-kun, which makes the hunter blush. “I told you before – demigods are creatures of three elemental strengths and two weaknesses. You haven't take full strength yet, but if you took the power of Wood for yourself, you could be able to heal Er Yin.”

I'm not absolutely opposed to it, but better to get more info. I wouldn't mind embracing wood before trying the kappa, but wanna ask about the sorcerer first of all.

>[] I've been resisting the choice for a while now for a reason.

>Please forgive me for this, Er Yin-sempai-chan and Kiku-cutie-chan. It is not a question of selfishness. I simply do not feel myself to be Wood more than the other remaining elements. At worst, if I choose an element that does not fit me, I could be unable to heal Er Yin.

I still think Ryukusa is more Fire.

Couldn't you also base it not on who Ryukusa is now, but who she must -become- to accomplish what she must, the way she wants?
>>
>>48294230
At the same time, her state of mind is a large part of her elemental affinities as well - actually embracing the element might go a long way towards realigning herself with it if they are in fact poorly compatible.

I'd prefer us not to shut down the wood path just yet until we've looked at all of the information.
>>
>>48294283

I don't think it's good to do that. Ryukusa became of Void when her actions made her so, not the reverse
>>
>>48294230
The lack of choice in an element, along with using the jewel on her elder sister, might show that Ryukusa has a problem with growing into her role, which would make sense given her upbringing being stunted.

Who she is might be farther-aligned with Fire, but would her role in things make more sense with Wood?
>>

>>
>>48294283
I don't really see that working out either. Wood seems to me to be the least destructive of the elements, and what it does destroy it does horribly through disease or cancer. It seems at odds with both the function and duties of Horobi, and the methods Ryukuza seems most willing to employ.

To be blunt: I don't think Horobi has any noticeable connection to Wood, and I don't think it's a good idea to make one.

She already has aspects of Wood in her regeneration, and aspects of Fire in her ability to see destructive intent/forces/power/capacity. (Fire Eyes and Wood Eyes aside). She was also told that she would keep everything she learned before she takes the last choice, but she could choose which to concentrate upon and in what ways - i.e. she would not lose fire eyes if she chooses wood, and she would not lose regeneration if she chooses Fire.

The one element she can't chose is Stone, because anon collectively has been avoiding anything of that ability like the plague. she has concentrated more on Fire than on Wood, but the capacity is still there.

>>48294283
>>48294289
These are very good points to keep in mind. It is a choice after all.

>You can change votes if you like.
>>
>>48294421
Wood utterly ruins Stone.

Tree roots have destroyed more buildings, foundations, and roads than any number of earthquakes. Wood is also the element of poisons and medicines, as well as breath.
>>
Wood is all about observinging the growth of things and pushing them toward one of the set paths that exists for them.

Ryukusa is more the kind to create a new path, because it's the right thing to do.
>>
>>48294424

[XXX] What about the Ryo Clan sorcerer?
[XX] I've been resisting the choice for a while now for a reason.
[X] I've been thinking hard and I still haven't made that decision.
[+] Apologies, but it's about what is right more than anything else.
[+] I can find out more about Kinashut's involvement if I speak to the spymistress perhaps....

Akari coughs softly and rolls over in her sleep, clutching your tail hard enough to make you stiffen visibly. She relaxes as you wind your tail along her shoulders and stroke her hair with the soft vanes, and her grip eases to something slightly more tolerable. She didn't draw blood, but she definitely sprained things.

You expression was apparently fairly alarming, and you quickly motion everyone to sit down and relax. Er Yin-sensei merely smiled, and you sister's eyebrows shot up a bit, but neither of them were particularly alarmed. You glance back at Akari, and she seems to be dreaming heavily, and badly, but otherwise seems all right. Her blood is moving a little fast, and she's got a lot of hormones and adrenaline, but she's also pregnant, and she's had morning sickness before so that's not entirely unusual.

“What about the sorcerer you tutored under, Kiku-chan? Would contacting him be worthwhile? You mentioned he was a capable healer....” Akari is calming down now, and you relax as well.

Kiku-chan frowns. “For something like your arm, yes – but for something like this, you would be placing her Pearl under his direct control for healing. She's also an enemy by the Clan's laws, while you were not, aniki.” Oh, that's not good; she only uses your title when she's being dead serious.

“I would accept your request that I do so, Ryukusa-sama, but I would protest that it places us in great danger from subterfuge, curses, and possession.” She smiles sadly. “And there is one other thing to remember – that if the Kami need you to make a choice, they may force one upon you.”

Your blood practically freezes in your veins.

“I haven't made that decision – I've thought about it, yes – but I haven't made that decision for a reason. I've never needed to or felt that the time was right to do so, Er Yin-sensei. And no offense to my priestess or my seer, or my sister, but it simply isn't something I feel I should decide out of hand. There are too many situations that could make the decision a bad one.” The hair on the back of your tail is standing on end, because your answer doesn't seem to have offended Er Yin or your sister, but has made them both worried. Very worried. Worried enough that Kiku-chan is looking form Jinyuu-onee-sama to Er Yin-sensei, though she seems as bewildered as Shoko and Inau-kun are.

Akari moans softly and you pardon yourself, before crawling back and taking a cloth from ~Nowhere~ to wet and place over her head. It soothes her some, but she's apparently having some really bad dreams. Her blood is a very little bit hotter than normal, but her injuries are almost gone.

After all:

>t places us in great danger from subterfuge, curses, and possession

For all we know we just triggered a curse, like the mirror thing.

And Kiku calling us "aniki" might be another sign.
>>
>>48295432

No, White Robe is what you die with, Red Robe is what you live with.

>>48295442

That's not true.
>>
>>48295422
So let's start!
In the pro-Fire camp, Ryukusa's affinity to the element has been brought up. I'm pretty bad when it comes to the elements of Japanese (well, east-asian in general) mythology/philosophy so I don't know what benefits it would bring Ryukusa should we pick it.
Wood is somewhat less close to Ryukusa right now, but as XS pointed out the simple act of choosing to embrace an element will do a lot to mold Ryukusa and her element of choice together regardless. One anon brought up that it might be useful in rebuilding Japan after Ryukusa goes all Ryukusa on it? I'm not sure whether that'll be the case though.
>>
>>48295451

That's a good point too. I mean, in the end, focusing on the elements is mostly guesswork regarding what's going on based on the discussion we were having when things got bad times. Some kind of more direct, immediate threat unrelated to Ryukusa's nature and choices (or at least related in a different way) is very plausible and suits the confusing update well.
>>
I find the very idea of being molded to your choice extremely distateful. It's like saying goodbye to who you are, dying and then have someone else that fit the criteria exist in your stead.

>>
>>48295478
The question I have with that is, the first post didn't mention his name. Then the second post DID mention his name. XS explicitly posted that the order was centrally important - doesn't that mean the 'default' was NOT mentioning his name, and whatever happened to interrupt things whether it was illusion or timey-wimey bullshit or whatever interfered to make us say it? Thus saying his name was not the trigger, but rather the intended result or similar?
>>
>>48295478

It could, yes. I mean, he was part of the ones in charge of dealing with Er Yin, and it's the first time he was mentioned by Kiku, or even mentioned aloud, since we freed her Master.
>>
>>48295493
Molded could be less invasive then that anon, if an entire arsenal of new options are made available to us we may make different choices, like if wood gives us more subtle approches to a threat we may pick those instead of going straight to war, Ryukusa will change but it may be more how people just change over time rather than mind bending

Please don't lie for important things like that.
>>
>>48295548
I originally thought so too but it feels off
>>
>>48295493
I believe the idea is more that you make your choice after careful deliberation and soul-searching (ideally), or a desperate recognition of its usefulness (in more dire straits), and the process of picking said element over the others itself indicates that your nature is now more suited to said element and open to its nature. Basically it's more that whenever you do something you're unconsciously molding yourself to one element or another, and choosing an element is simply making that process conscious and focused maybe?
>>
>>48295565
How can we be calm when cute foxgirls such as this, and indeed cute girls of all shapes and sizes, are under threat?
>>
>>48295585

Ok everyone who's panicking just take a deep breath.

>>
[XXX] Ask them quietly what they're talking about as you minister to your niji-chan.
[XXX] Wake Yui and see if she can help with Akari before you continue the discussion.
[XX] Wake Akari and take care of her; she's obviously having trouble.
[X] ….what's happening, you two. Tell me NOW.

[X] Fuck. Shit. Heaven. Kamifuckindamnit.

You crawl past your sleeping loved ones – without a sound or even disturbing the bed – and settle behind Akari. With tail and hands you gently pull her head into your lap, and strokes her hand, wetting the cloth again as she settles into a deeper sleep. “You're being purposefully obtuse and mysterious, both of you, and I am becoming fairly alarmed.” If Akari were awake she'd be positively concerned at this point, But you're still calm and collected, nothing has happened that can't be fixed. “I just went through ten years of therapy in three days about keeping secrets from the people I love and you two are starting to pull at some very fresh scars.”

You lay your hand on Yui's shoulder and she wakens instantly, her eyes bright in the dim lighting of the room. She grabs your arm, but doesn't try and throw or hurt you; a trained reaction, checking to see if she can or should attack or not. Probably learned in a very unpleasant manner. “Yui-niji-chan, Akari-niji-chan is ill.” She rolls out of her covers and is kneeling next to her lover in an instant, her hand hovering over face, mouth, chest, and heart, as well as pearl.

Turning your attention back to Jinyuu-onee-sama and Er Yin-sensei, you can see they are both equally worried....no. Jinyuu is worried, about Akari. Er Yin is ~frightened~ for Akari. You narrow your eyes and focus your attention, and Er Yin's head snaps up, sightlessly gazing away from you but all her attention is just where you want it – on you. Jinyuu flicks out her fan and covers her chest as she fans herself, guarding her heart but leaving her face and throat exposed.
>>
>>48295682
Maybe even having him in your thoughts is bad enough?

Also related question, what's the thematic significance of Jinyuu being shown?
>>
>>48295682
Yeah that's what I asked. My suggestion was that whatever happened wasn't actually true name fuckery, but rather something else meant to enable True Name fuckery. However, that's simply a guess. The problem is I've read the posts over a couple times looking for hints and other than the name I don't see any concrete hints to what's wrong. Which would make 'it's something to do with True Name fuckery' the natural conclusion if we're supposed to be able to figure it out right now. Whether it's the cause of it, or the goal.

I DO NOT LIKE THE TEXT IN THAT PICTURE XS

>>48295709
….vulnerable but unable to do anything to prevent what she knows is going to happen from happening.

You touch Akari, and you feel her blood is....it's sluggish and fast by turns, a mixture of cold and hot, not dangerously either, just a degree or two of difference, but it is neither natural nor healthy. Yui's hand is over her center, and she looks up at you, far more worried than you want her to be. She shakes her head, unsure of what's happening, and her eyes glimmer with the power of the Void.

You open your own Water Eyes, and you can see things are....confused, in turmoil. Akari's dreams are disjointed, torn and damaged, and she's struggling to collect herself in the dreams. You glance at Jinyuu-onee-sama, and you see her fear, the anguish of being in a situation she is not only powerless to stop, but unable to see to the end of even with her vaunted skills. Er Yin is better off, but not by much; she's had longer to come to terms with her weaknesses and inabilities, as well as the abilities she has. She isn't suffering from the dichotomy of knowing and being unable to act. The only question in her mind is when she should act and with how much force. And she doesn't mean physical force.

You lean down and whisper softly. “Akari. Wake up. Aki-chan. Listen to me, you're safe. I'm here.” She shivers and she clutches your tail, but her grip is weak and her strength failing her. You look up. “Tell me what this is about now, one of you. Please.”

It is Er Yin who answers for them both. “You know we cannot, Ryukusa-sama, even if we wanted to. What happens now is beyond either of us, right now.” She is gentle, kindly, and utterly not budging on the subject.

“Tell me. Now, Er Yin-sensei.” You don't make your voice colder or steely. You let your feelings show through. Your fear, your knowledge that they know something, the worry that this involves Akari – oh so fuckin' obvious now – and the pain that their reticence is causing you.

The pain that tears through Er Yin's expression is almost enough to make you regret having done that to her. Her claws tighten over her diminutive lover's shoulders, but she merely closes her eyes and shakes her head once, the pain of being able to comply too much to bear.

Quite literally, apparently, as she Er Yin starts to speak, but Inau-kun's eyes widen, and she leaps from her seat to race across the bed to where you and Yui-chan are, disturbing everyone and forcing you to block Yuuhi-s sheathed nodachi before the poor girl gets brained by an unconscious nogitsune-child. Yui-chan looks startled as well, and Kiki-hime sits up slowly. “Turn her head, turn her head,” Inau-kun demands of your oni-chick, and Yui obeys without question.

Er Yin barely whispers the words, but you pick up on her agonized thought much more clearly. “Kami stuff.”

Kiki-hime looks at you, confused and sleepy, as you feel the surge of Akari's blood, from deep in her body, the powerful muscles clenching so hard and violently that she spatters nearly black blood across Yui's lap and half of Kiki's body as she coughs it up.

While Er Yin's words – not just about Kami Stuff, but about the Kami making sure you make a choice – echo hatefully in your brain, it is Inau-kun who voices the worst thing imaginable. Her eyes are filled with determination, however, and that alone gives you hope where by all rights you should have none.

“Her body is rejecting the child.”
