A small security camera watches an office. People in business suits rush from office to office with papers and data pads in hand as others work over videos and photos on computer terminals. View screens cover the walls, showing news coverage of hundreds of different channels and agencies across Union space, and almost instantly they cut to static. The workers stop, like drones cut off from their queen, looking at the wall of static as an emergency sign appears with a loud monotone beep apologizing for technical difficulties. The people look around, confused, as their own devices loose interstellar service as their various comm relay service providers suddenly cease to function.

Then they do again. The computers show alerts flashing on their screens, and data pads and phones chime with mail alerts. The camera zooms in as they fumble in confusion and a man walks out from an office labeled with the title “Editor in Chief” in bold letters.

“What's going on?” He asks. “Anyone have service?”

“Nothing outside the system.” Someone replies as they read over various notifications displayed on holograms and handheld screens. The Editor pulls out his own handheld data pad, and flips through notifications of his own.

“These are gag orders.” He says with confusion. “From the BFI office. What the hell is going on?”

“Put your weapons down and stand aside!” The voice crackles over the radios of the marines as they look around in confusion. “You have no idea what you are dealing with or what danger this facility has placed us all in. The entire sector is at risk!”

Elizabeth stands in front of the towering relay, the massive command brain of your ship humming at the back of the large chamber. Control consoles grown from bone and chitin stand around her, for convenience more than necessity. Skin is stretched tight between the outstretched bone limbs, offering a screen as the skin's color shifts to show the surface of the dark, sunless world and the blurred images of the drones' stitched together into a shifting, foggy mosaic of the hallway where the marines stand.

Lightyears away, Windsor continues to spread his attention across his desk as phones ring and assistances pester him off screen. He holds three earphones up to his head at once as he watches the screen.

If we were talking about our stealthed hives or something like that I'd agree with you, but this isn't subterfuge, we're taking overt military action against their outpost during our first official contact. If Elizabeth could have made this encounter bloodless then her discovery would have been a worthy price.

Hell, it could even have made it easier to pull the wool over their eyes since human/xeno first contact has almost always been violent.
>>
>>48296573
It's an important distinction however that in both this contact and the previous one where we played the rocksmashers, we are clearly attempting to render aid, regardless of whether humanity wants it.
>>
>>48296679
And that's how we'll spin it. Slapping the hand of a child off the stove. It stings, but not as badly as the burn would've.

>>
>>48296492

>>
>>48296704
Fuck no we won't. It still pays to infiltrate the Union's worlds without officially alerting them to our existence, and the Union has so far done nothing to show themselves as worthwhile as a peaceful partner in the interstellar order.
>>
>>48296679
That's the plan, though if you consider their limited perspective who would blame them for assuming we have other, less benign motives? The obvious one would be to maintain a monopoly on a superweapon tech.

For this reason I think it worth making this intervention as palatable as possible for the Union, unless they do something stupid like try to stop us.
>>
>>48296515
But our study of human social interactions says that should just make you kiss them more!
>>
>>48296729

Which is why we should wait until we see how their war with the Commonwealth pans out first. When the moment is right we declare our existence and our support for the Commonwealth, and together we start hammering the Union on two fronts and politically force them to give up resources and territory/recognize our claims. Don't forget the Union still believes it controls the entire expanse while we fully intend on claiming at least half of it.
>>
>Media Blackouts and gag orders
This makes me want to initiate one anon's plan of jumping a battleground right into Gemini. Perhaps with the ships currently participating in the operation on Tenebris after we've concluded things. Let's see them suppress THAT first contact.

Their quarrantine efforts might come in handy if they have parts we didnt even consider.

>>
>>48296573
>>48296679

Yeah, if we can make this relatively bloodless we should. We are powerful enough we don't have to kill everything to hide out actions. It's time to take a big boy seat at the diplomatic table and to do this most effectively we should take pains to appear in as positive a light as is reasonably possible.
>>
>>48296801
Don't tempt me like that, anon.

I wonder if offering humanity immortality in exchange for Killinger no questions asked would make him sweat?
>>
>>48296841

>>
>>48296858
We can probably make a compelling argument that our species was almost driven to extinction by this threat, and we only took the space of weeks to be strong enough to threaten human worlds a sector over. They band together with us or die.
>>
>>48296378
There is no reason not to put off waking up the prisoners form their coma for another year. The cost of keeping them alive is so negligible we don't track it anymore.

Vaughn's current state and alterations would make her an invaluable research subject for the Union to get their claws on, so we should just make sure she doesn't exist anymore as far as they're concerned. Leave them no questions to ask and wonder about.

Because them studying and dissecting Vaughn would appear to be a safe non-crystals way to study whatever the fuck, if they suspect it's the same tachyon radiation.

That would be hillariously stupid to do. Since any kill switch you put in is also going to be found by any other genetic manipulating opponent, not to mention genes put in thousands of years ago are highly unlikely to be the same unless linked to key genomic data. Basically even if there was a switch normal evolution would turn it into scrap material within generations as its not chosen for.
>>
>>48296884
Agreed. Hell, we don't even need to mention it was our species that was almost killed off, just that this line of research is responsible for the total destruction of multiple Galaxy spanning empires (true) and that the humans are in no way equipped for a threat of this magnitude.

I like to think that if there was ever a war between us, the Union would try a virus like Theseus made, and just get confused when it didn't work. Then a week later, a never before seen type of flu rips through the human populations of multiple worlds, defying any attempts to cure or contain it. It's almost completely harmless, just giving its victims a runny nose and cough before clearing up, but jumps between human bodies like wildfire, like Neuro virus level contactability.

So the Union panics and gets its geneticists to investigate the thing and when they pull apart the DNA they find it to be mostly junk DNA. When this junk DNA is read it can be easily be broken into a code, which when read states "REALLY? YOU REALLY WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME WITH THE HIVE? BITCH YOU DON'T EVEN WANT TO KNOW WHAT I CAN DO."

>>48296838
Mmmm yes. Commonwealth/Hive relations best relations. After Theseus/Queen relations.

A chittering noise echoes over the radio signals to the marine ship, folding into speech.

"Hold position. Prepare to be boarded." The ship jinks and spins as it attempts to duck away from your approaching ships as your corvettes move in from all sides.

"Multiple alien contacts are closing in!" Someone shouts over the relay as you watch the screen through Gilliam's eyes. "What are our orders? We don't have a safe acceleration path, receiving multiple possible sensor pings, likely targeting sensors. Sir, orders?" The voice is becoming increasingly desperate as Windsor watches, his eyes twitching from screen to screen. He finally clicks a button on his screen.

"Do not fire!" He says firmly. "I repeat, weapons hold!" Your ships detect, after some obvious hesitation, the gradual cooling of the ship's weapon systems. "There's no way you're fighting through that with your armament. The soonest we could assemble a response fleet of that size is..." He seems to check over data on another terminal. "A day and a half. Maybe sooner if the server ships break off."

The marine transport's singularity shrinks and dies, sending it drifting as your ships close in. The umbilical of the first corvette to reach it quickly seals around the hull and begins to burn in, secreting thick molecular acid to melt through the hull until it breaks through and quickly puffs up, filling the space and locking the umbilical in place.

I don't think so, in this case. That sort of weapon is a deterrent as much as anything else, and it'd be stupid for us to get the benefits of holding them as a threat without paying the upfront cost to build them first.
It'd be like if the US only ever built two nukes, but expected the Soviets to stay in line anyway.

What I was thinking was more like using the ship as a disposable first stage to the missile. It'd be a bare-bones lump of maneuvering drives, armor, and point defense with a missile launcher buried in the spine. It would deploy alongside a larger Ship equipped with a micro-Rip drive, which would then warp the missile boat to close range. Then it would hit the gas and evade/destroy/soak up any immediate countermeasures before nose diving the missile into the target, or launching it conventionally if damaged too badly.

Basicly just a cheap HP sponge to tank for the bomb.
>>
>>48297267
They come in pairs.

>>48297271
I was hoping on the Attack-Defense-Agility triangle, attack could be sacrificed for the other two. A heavy armored ship would dodge very well but would go in a straight line fast enough. Dunno how well that would work in reality though.
>>
>>48297271

>>
>>48297271
Step one: slap a shitload of extra armor on the back.
Step two: blink in an atomic pod directly behind the ship
Step three: [activate it].jpg
Step four: Weeeeeeee!
>>
>>48297254
Well, since you asked nicely.

The first flaw in your idea of spinning this event as well intentioned endeavour in the Union's greater interest is the fact that only the top intelligence brass in their government will see it. The relay is directly connected to Windsor's desk and he will have the final call on how much becomes known in the wider Union. Everything else will be colored by him and Killinger for the greatest possible political gain for themselves. And I highly doubt Killinger and his lackeys will be fully convinced of our benevolent intentions and not be interested in screwing us over for their own gain somehow.

This is on top of the fact that we have publicly allied ourselves with the great Machine Terror of the expanse, the Unity. Don't forget that so far the entire PR wing of the Unity has so far been devoted to terrifying his makers as much as possible, anyone buddy buddy with him is going to be flagged as an enemy of all mankind by mere association at the outset.
>>
>>48297353
I just love the idea of doing as much damage with a single ship as possible.
Just imagine how fucking spooked the Union would be afterwards. All we'd need to do is Rip a single ship in anywhere afterwards to put them in immediate panic mode.
>>
So how are we gonna start first official contact with the union, since this tenebris invasion will most likely not be show to the public.
Can we send a battleship to Tannhauser? Or our hive ship to Gemini?
>>
>>48296951
>>Secure the ship and disable the quantum comms
>>
>>48297357
Atomic pod + alabative armor = Nuclear ship grenade.

Fire them from rift drive carrier ships (grenedeers) onto almost the top of their target.

If it gets shot, still goes boom and sends detritus speeding through space at high velocity.
>>
>>48297372
That is exactly why we need thesus to hijack the comms and have it streamed to all of the political figures he deems high enough should know.
>>
>>48297372
So all you have is speculation about vague possibilities, summed up by "something, somehow".

>we have publicly allied ourselves
We have not. As far as they know we only simultaneously warped in after seeing the same things.

Besides, it's not like we can get away with kidnapping the marines and everything else, so I don't see why shutting down their comms will get you. They would receive all this info later on anyway.

Like I said, we have nothing to lose, but something to gain.

>>48297085
For such a warhead, I would ask you to pay for it upon loading it to a ship, this ship is then the designated bombarding vessel, which if destroyed will loose the warhead. The ship will then attempt to blink in and launch the warhead.

Deploying the immolator is essentially the torch orc from LotR. The other faction will have the chance to shoot it down. You are assumed to have a stockpile lying around, but to put one on the field I will at least ask you to designate a ship with a missile launcher to carry it.

Its an anti point defense method without having to have multiple ships but instead using a more expensive design, which means they scale better than using multiple ships. Production is on our side in the long term, not counting OQ.

3 Thorn launchers

1 Specialty warrior depending on the situation (seeker pod, siren etc)

Shittons of Warriors and Wasps, good amounts of Heavy Warriors and Flies. We've yet to see any airborne drones make appearances, though I eagerly await seeing the Support Fluttercraft in action.

"We've been boarded!" The voice says. Windsor frantically types something on his keyboard as he listens. He turns to Gilliam.

"Quick. Give me your observations." He says as he clicks the radio back on. "Have all crew fall back to the bridge! Get me helmet cams and security feed. Do what you can to survive."

"Is that permission to fire?"

"It's permission to do what you have to. We don't even know if they take prisoners, or even what they look like. All we can do is try to prevent further escalation. You're the one out there and you know as much as I do right now." Windsor says. "I know that's not very reassuring coming from the Secretary of Intelligence, but it's the hand you've got right now. Try not to shoot first, but whatever you do to survive, it already has my support." There is a long silence over the radio, and then you hear the sound of a bulkhead being impacted.

"Yes sir." You hear over the radio. There is a static filled buzz as a grainy visual image comes into focus. A woman looks through the camera from the bridge of the marine transport, her jumpsuit marked with various insignias of the Interstellar Marines. Behind her a security door is sealed shut, with a large dent punched into it. Another appears as your heavy drones impact it again with a sonic sledge. She jumps, as does the huddled crew, half a dozen humans holding to various consoles and handholds.

"Do we shoot?" Someone asks. The commander looks unsure as another large dent appears in the security door. A small crack in the seal of the door shows the thrashing of your drones as they rip at the door.

"It would be a last stand. Nowhere to go." Someone else says. The seal's gone. We can't jettison the bridge or we'd be sucking on vacuum."

Your heavy warrior impacts the door again, and several blades sink through the doors, slowly peeling back the metal with their claws.

"Return fire only!" The ship commander says. "I'm guessing if they wanted us dead we'd be dead, but if they attack make them earn every inch."

The door rips open, and the first heavy warrior steps through, nearly the size of the door itself. It swings in and lands with a thud, scraping into the metal floor panels as it brings itself to a stop and anchors itself firmly to the floor. Others quickly swing in after it, securing themselves to walls and ceilings or floating in as they push off from the surrounding surfaces with their limbs.

Windsor looks at the screen wide eyed as your drones quickly close the gap to the crew. One of them fires, the bolt of lightning arcing through the drone without much damage as it quickly tears the weapon from the human's hands, crushing it into chunks in its grip. The others are quickly secured, quickly disarming the small crew. A radio console blairs with static as the marines shout over it. Elizabeth's voice is muffled and garbled as your warriors bring their blades down on the speakers, walking past the quantum relay as they secure the bridge, the security terminals showing more flooding through the rest of the hangars and drop bod bays as you clear the rest of the ship.

Windsor quickly pulls out a small data drive, plugging it into his computer as he continues to work over a number of devices. He turns to Guilliam.

"Observations?" He asks. Gilliam blinks several times, his eyes frozen open until now.

"I... have no idea. What do you mean observations?"

"What the hell are these things, for a start, and how did they know what was happening on Tenebris, where the facility was, and how to speak our language?"

I'm pretty sure our heavy warriors are just as agile if not more so than the Union drop suit. They have ridiculous masses of muscle to help them move that armor. Besides, the queen technically reverse engineered the heavy armor after drop suit technology.

"How could I..." Gilliam clears his throat. "Superficially they look... insectoid. Clearly some manner of exoskeleton or shell, however that would either imply a low gravity tolerance or some other, additional endoskeletal support structure. Or perhaps it's all some manner of semi-organic exo-suit. They clearly exhibit incredible strength, which kills the theory of a low gravity tolerance, so... I would say they would require some form of support structure."

"You're repeating yourself, doctor."

"Well I'm thinking out loud here!" Gilliam snaps. He quickly retreats back into his seat, although Windsor seems to let the outburst slide unmentioned. "They don't... seem to have any overt technological components. At least, no totally synthetic components. Bio-engineered technology, perhaps, which would imply a vast understanding of biology, meaning unless they have some cultural taboos on the issue, would imply they themselves are at least modified to better suit their roles." Your mind presses down on his own, and he closes his eyes as he tries to think.

"I, I have no idea. They had to have listened to our language extensively to be able to speak it, that much is obvious, but we've been broadcasting tutorials on how to speak English, Esperanto, and every other language we have for centuries into space, they could have picked it up anywhere."

>Send in your speaker drone to speak with the crew

Your speaker drone quickly skips through the doors and drifts to the bridge, settling to the floor with its legs scraping the mettle and gripping several handholds.

"Humans should not worry. The dangerous situation is being fixed. Human meddling has made many problems to fix." It chirps. Windsor madly clicks on his keyboard.

"Remarkable." Gilliam says. "They have a tremendous level of apparent genetic diversity. I've never seen anything like it."

"I have." Windsor says. "On the news, actually."

The marines stand nervously gripping their weapons as the warriors close in slowly.

"Who are you? Identify yourself!" The squad leader shouts over the radio.

"I am the only person currently preventing those warriors from tearing you apart to get through that door. Believe me, there are more of them than you have bullets. Your ship has been captured and the crew detained, and those lithovores will reach the facility long before any reinforcements arrive and even if reinforcements were to arrive in time, there are three Unity server ships in low orbit above this installation." Elizabeth says calmly. "The best option; your only option, is to blow open that door and stand aside. That's the only way you leave this planet alive."

"Elizabeth." The dry, croaking voice over the radio says. "Is that you?" One of the marines does a double take between the door console and the warriors.

"Who? You know each other?"

"We don't have much time! I won't ask again!" Elizabeth says sternly. "Everyone who died at this facility is blood on the Union's hands. Four more won't make my sleep any worse than it already is."

The Union thinking Elizabeth is in charge so that might explain why Unity is working with us on this one.
>>
>>48298974
As I recall, yes. I advocated for chiding the Union for interfering with our "child hive", but it could be played multiple ways.

The satellite we could simply destroy if we wanted to, we'd just have to prohibit Union forces from getting a close look at Leeland for the foreseeable future. Don't have to cover Unity's presence there at all, unless I'm forgetting some detail.
>>
>>48299337
The Union is going to want to take a look at Leeland after this, and even if we can prevent them from getting close, even at the edges of the system the extensive changes we've made to the planet are going to be very visible.

The human marine leading the squad looks nervously at the warriors, holding out the remote detonator for the blasting caps pasted to the door.

"You still didn't tell me who you are." He says. Elizabeth groans in frustration.

"I am Dr.Elizabeth Vaughn. You have ten seconds to get out of the way. I'm not going to recite my life history to you, but I possess multiple degrees in scientific fields you likely wouldn't know how to even pronounce, and I am telling you that if that reactor doesn't get shut down now, every sentient life in known space will be at risk."

"She is lying!" Emmerich says. "She brings a fleet of demons here because she is afraid of the light!" The marine looks to the rest of the squad.

"Get to cover, fire in the hole!" He says, and the squad leap through the doors of a nearby office as the blasting caps go off, sending the door flying out of its frame.

"You have no idea what you have done!" Emmerich says as your drones swarm into the room.

It is a small room, with several chairs set up along the walls with various readouts set along the wall on the door's side, with a large bay window opposite it. It overlooks a larger chamber filled with instruments and machinery, loading bays and cargo cranes set up along the walls and ceiling with the center of the massive chamber sealed off with another set of large windows. The inside is built like a pit, with more piping and machines set along the roof as several scientists look on below from several large terminals.

There are several armed security guards waiting by the door, each firing into the first drone that enters. Your drones quickly swarm over them, a heavy warrior cleanly dispatching one with a thunderous punch of its sledgehammers, while the other is ripped apart by a crowd of wasps that quickly flay the armor and rip the guard to pieces in seconds. More of your drones continue to pour in like a flood as every drone in the facility converges on the location.

You can see more guards further down either hall, where stairways lead to the floor bellow. More guards still seem to be taking cover among the machinery, with the lab workers quickly drawing their sidearms and fleeing further into the facility through a pair of doors.

"You have no idea what you are doing!" Emmerich says over the intercom. "You are damning the souls of trillions!"

"I don't know who or what you are, Doc." The marine leader says. "But you're somehow the one that sounds sane here, so I'll be willing to believe you. My orders were already to shut the reactor down. The fact that the Unity, some unknown aliens, and you all seem to agree with that doesn't effect my orders much." You hear a voice from one of the other marines.

"A mad AI's bound to kill something worth killing once in awhile." He says. Someone whacks his helmet as the squad leader continues.

Man, this is surreal. I have by Baltimore and here's a guy in another developed country who's got it worse.
The fuck is the world coming to.

What about the figure outside the facility, can we kill it in case it's corrupted?
>>
>>48300117
Once I get the situation under control and the artifact secured, I see no reason why we can't just glass the place on the way out.
>>
Erm, sorry, but was a post missed?

I thought Elizabeth was still talking over the radio. When did she show up on the planet? Or am I just misreading?

Oh right. I forgot.

Obviously foreverial crystallized brains in the humans is the same process that did in Auntie.

>>42370282
>You glimpse an image of her as your minds connect. You see her twisted figure sitting in darkness, her body reflecting what little light there is. A black crystal protrudes from her head, its smooth and jagged shape clung to by bits of raw flesh and cracked carapace. Reflective shards of black metallic shards reach up from her back. Her head shakes as her minds races over the events unfolding.
>>
>>48300139
She came in with the fleet reinforcements that jumped in at the same time with the serverships
>>

That would be impossible. It's silicon based.
>>
>>48300365
Silicon is crystalline.
Also they started attacking the base as soon as troops landed and the creatures within the structure weren't hostile to the security forces.
>>
>>48300408
But psionics don't affect silicon-lifeforms
>>
>>48300408
Salt is crystalline, that doesn't make it relevant.

They were attracted to and inside the base long before they arrived, as the sonic fence frequency was fucked with.
>>
>>48299969
I suppose we can take pieces of that sonic fence with us too to figure out what it does?
>>
>>48300438
>But psionics don't affect silicon-lifeforms
We don't know if they do.
>>
>>48300446
I think the sonic fence somehow got turned from a repellent into a giant dinner bell

>>48300477
Well now we have some test subjects
>>
>>48300477
We could ask Heretoc if he know whether or not the crystals can affect artificial organism like AI.
>>
>>48300113
Yeah, this country has changed too much, when i was young, 10 years ago an less parents could let their kids go out an whatever without fear and i used to go out in the middle of the night all the time and there was never amy truble but nowadays kids and women are getting raped everyday, gangs burn cars all the time and drugs and guns are pretty much part of the everyday life while the government and police are dumbstruck doing almost nothing to help. It's like a nightmare desu
>>
>tfw down the Advanced Psionic Imprinting tree we too will become able to slowly cause humans to mutate their brains into hybrid ones without even physically touching them
>>
>>48300485
We know the history of the Skyl, they gave us a copy.

It's not exactly the kind of experiment the Skyl would have done. To find out, they would have had to have actually exposed things to crystal corruption.

And they were reluctant to even use the things for obvious reasons.

Silicon based lifeform are not the same thing as AI/Machines
