Shinobi Quest #23

This quest takes place within the lands of the Five Great Shinobi Nations (aka Narutoverse) starting roughly around the beginning of the original series. The world of this quest remains similar to the original, with slight but notable differences in certain areas, based upon the passage of time from a single slightly altered event.

(It’s a goddamn Naruto Quest, you bastards. Have fun, participate, and write in when you feel inclined. Most of the outcomes of this quest will be determined by you, the players. Critiques and questions are always welcome, as my knowledge of the weeby shit is not all encompassing.)

Previous Threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Shinobi%20Quest

Last thread, Tsuki Norihime and the team arrived at the base camp for the ruins expedition, and discussed strategy. Major concerned were the shinobi aligned to other nations- and among them, one in particular- Kisame Hoshigaki. His partner’s identity remained a mystery.

Deciding to switch gears, Tsuki met the other shinobi, aligned with the Land of Earth. Kurotsuchi was her name, and between the two of you, you exchanged some information, along with her warning you to stay out of her way.

Finally, as the teams met before the entrance, you descended down into the ruins, before running to escape a rush of water unleashed by Kisame. Eventually able to avoid it, the team was stuck in a large room with a door on the ceiling- eventually climbing out to escape. They proceeded into the darkness….
>>
“Feh, can’t see a thing.” Nori complains, peering into the pitch black hallway head.

The water had stopped rising, but wasn’t receding, either. You could would it out, but why bother when you could move forward?

“I believe this is my cue.” Lemeza says, producing a torch. “If one of you would be so kind?”

Itachi expels a small jet of flame from his mouth, which lights the torch. “Now, stay close behind me- who knows what we’ll find in here. We haven’t explored past this room, yet.” the doctor explains, keeping the torch lifted above his head.

Would you rather…

1. Take point with Lemeza.
2. Stay in the middle of the group.
3. Watch the rear.

“I’ll take point with you, Lemeza.” you say stepping forward.

“Very well.” Itachi says. “I’ll remain in the back. Hinata, stay behind Tsuki. Nori, stay back here with me.”

You all nod, and proceed.

The torch illuminates the long hallway in segments as you creep along. Lemeza traces the wall with his fingers as you walk, but otherwise doesn’t stop to look at the walls.

You walk for a few minutes, before Lemeza stops. He holds the torch forward, and the shadows fall away, the light bleeding into the darkness.

“Looks like it opens up into another room here; but it’s hard to say what exactly is in it….”

You can’t see a thing beyond the lights edge and the sheer drop in front of you.

You….

1. Take the torch and investigate.
2. Have someone else go explore.
3. Try to illuminate the room with a fire style technique.

“Hinata, could you take a look around?” you ask, turning to face her. “I’ll back you up.”.

She nods in agreement, although you both look to Itachi for approval.

“Go ahead, you two. Be careful, and let us know if you find anything.” he says, keeping his eyes fixed solidly into the darkness behind him.

“Byakugan!” Hinata says, activating her dojutsu. You can see her pan across the room before she addresses you.

“This room seems to be a large pit, Tsuki-hime.” She says still scanning the room. “It’s hard to make out specific details, but it seems to feed downward into a conical shape… there are also some platforms around the outer walls of the room, along the walls.”

“If we’re careful, we can walk along the outside. Here, follow me.” she says, offering her hand.

Reposting best bread from past two threads...

We should go full Sasaki Kojiro and develop a signature kenjutsu technique/form based on the movement of our bird of paradise/tropical bird summons in flight.
Combine with stellar chakra, the kiba swords, and potential best sage mode and we've got an ultimate technique.

You take her hand. It’s not a big deal, you’re friends, after all.

She leads you gently along the edge of the room, with you holding the torch. It’s very humbling- you don’t think you’ve ever felt this blind or helpless before. You peer down into the darkness- a bad idea. You grip Hinata’s hand harder as a reflex- and she stops.

“Are you ok, Tsuki-hime? Am I going too fast?” she says, voice full of concern.

“N-no, I’m fine. Let’s keep going.” you respond.

You continue, eventually reaching one of the larger platforms. At Hinata’s direction, you see some unlit torches set along the wall- you take turns lighting each one. It isn’t much, but if there are more…

You and Hinata continue to creep along the edge, lighting torches as you go along. Eventually, the room is dimly lit, at least enough you assume the others can see.

Looking down, you can see a vast sandpit, collecting toward a deeper point that doesn’t seem readily visible. What was this room used for? The rest of the team seems more interested in investigating the room now that they can see.

That pit, though….

You…

1.Don’t mess with it.
2. Chuck something like a stone or a torch into the pit.
3. Ask Lemeza about it.

The majority of mutations are detrimental. It's amazing that the people in the Elemental Nations have these carefully pruned lines of inherited superpowers, and you want to fuck it up by crossbreeding. Have you ever had an apple grown from seed, rather than grafted? They're awful.
>>48347712
Well, even within nations, or before the founding of villages, someone has to have gotten the idea. "I know how to make sure my children are super powerful! I just gotta..." and then it can happen any number of different ways. Whether it's two friendly clans marrying into each other to secure an alliance, or rape-babby, there are lots of scenarios where children should inherit multiple bloodlines.

...though now that I think about it, Terumi Mei has two bloodlines. However that happened, she's the only one. You'd think it'd be more common than just one person in all the Elemental Nations.

>>48347715
It's sort of Kaguya's thing.

Actually that'd be pretty funny. Grill from Leaf accidentally styles herself after ancient Rabbit Goddess. I wonder how Zetsu would react to that, if at all.

“So, doctor. What do you think?” you ask, turning to the smoking Lemeza. When did he light that?

“Well, if I had to make an educated guess? Something probably lived in the pit, once. Maybe still. Hard to say.” he says peering over the edge. “Or maybe they just threw people people into the pit as a form of execution? No real clues.”

Not much help. Though the thought of something living down there is a bit unsettling…

“Maybe it’s the sandworm, eh princess?” Nori says, giving you a big grin.

“Whatever it is, I doubt it would live long with no food down here.” you retort. “Regardless, we should keep moving. These tight platforms would make tough terrain in a fight, if they followed us.”

“Good idea, Tsuki. We shouldn’t stay in one place too long, as far as we can avoid it. After you, Lemeza.” Itachi says.

The group walks along the pathways to the far side of the room. A large door of wrought stone is here, again depicting a large tree.

Again with the tree designs.

“Lemeza, what’s with the trees? We’re in a desert, after all.” you say tracing the design with your finger.

“This isn’t the first site I’ve been to with designs like this. They aren’t all the same, and are spread wide across our world, but this is consistent- a giant tree. It always seems to be a point of worship and reverence, although I couldn’t tell you what it means. My educated guess is that they all originate from a similar time period, although their presence here is definitely odd, taking the location into account. Was the Land of Wind always a desert, I wonder?” he rambles.

“I suppose we’ll find out more, deeper inside. Let’s get this door open.” Itachi says, motioning for Lemeza to help him.

The two men push, and the door grinds slowly open. Dust is kicked up as it opens, causing you to squint and cover your mouth.

There’s a distinct temperature difference between the two rooms- this new area is significantly cooler. It’s also lit, which is somewhat surprising. Pale blue light seems to be streaming in from somewhere above, although you cannot locate the source.

Itachi turns to Lemeza. “Has anyone else gone into these ruins? I can’t imagine the others would be ahead of us.” He sounds concerned.

“No, I don’t think so. But I also wasn’t here for the two days it took to gather you- I couldn’t really tell you how far they went in my absence.” the doctor says, peering inside the door.

The party takes a moment to think, but eventually proceeds.

This room is oddly shaped, seemingly coming together from another room on the opposite side of your entrance. More tree designs line the walls, culminating in a large central chamber. A door, hidden amongst the the “roots” of a large tree carving lies open, the cold breeze emanating from it.

Your eyes are drawn to the altar in front of it, however. One of Tamaishi’s researchers is laying atop it, in a pool of blood.

You investigate the situation…

You have no idea how long he’s been here- it’s not smart to rush into things.

You cautiously approach, with the rest of the group following.

The blood on the altar is dry- the wound on his back, a strange three-pronged wound, seems old as well. Without touching the body, you take a look around the area in closer detail. A trail of dried blood runs from the opposite side of the altar to the open door. A mechanism to open it, maybe?

As you turn around, Lemeza and Itachi are looking at the corpse. They look at each other, nod, and Itachi flips the man over. His chest….. is covered in blooming flowers.

Uh, what?

Lemeza is a bit taken aback by this- while Itachi seems to focus even more on them. Pale violet flowers… almost white. Did they spring forth from the wound on his back and burst through his chest? How horrible….

The man himself looks… drained, somehow. His skin is dry, his face hollow.

Lemeza lights another cigarette.

“This man… wasn’t part of the expedition teams we came down here with. He’s part of Tamaishi’s team, though; he must have come down here while I was gone. Does Tamaishi know? Afzal? And this wound…. There are too many questions, and not enough answers.” he says, cigarette hanging out of his mouth.

“I’ve never seen these flowers before.” Itachi says, still observing the pale blooms.

Hinata and Nori peer over his shoulder, but don’t seem to have anything to add.
“Neither have I.” Lemeza says. “Must be a particularly nasty plant, to nourish itself on human blood. I’m no botanist, though.”

Wait, don’t Ino’s parents run a flower shop? They might be able to identify it…

“We should take a sample. The Yamanaka family should be able to recognize it, at least.” you say, digging through your bag.

You pull out a kunai, and look towards Itachi for approval.

However, it’s Lemeza that speaks.

“Careful there, Tsuki. Here, take this.” he says, handing you a cylindrical container.

With Itachi watching on, you cut the stem of one of the flowers, gingerly placing in the container. It should be safe in there, but….

Are you trying to bring it back alive? It will probably die without a source of nourishment…

You decide that you’d prefer to keep it alive. Unfortunately the cost seems rather dried out… You’ll need to find it some blood eventually. You’ll just need to check on it to see how it’s going.

With that done, you stow away your newest acquisition. It has a great many possibilities- just imagine if you could grow them in captivity? But these thoughts will need to wait until you’re safely out of this place.

The team reassembles near the door, falling back into the original formation. With Lemeza next to you, you continue down this new passageway.

Before too long, you spill into another room. It isn’t lit, but the torch reflects off of metal- to the point of being almost blinding.

Lemeza’s cigarette drops out of his mouth.

You’re standing on a large stone bridge, going from the doorway to the far side of the room. On the far side of the room, a giant tree sculpture rises to the ceiling. It’s what’s beneath the bridge that’s so shocking, however. It’s entirely filled with what looks to be treasure! Gold, Silver, Jewels…

It’s just out of reach! All this wealth…

You shake it off. There has to be a reason all this is here, right? You turn to see Nori hanging off the edge of the bridge, trying to grab at the loot.

“Hey! Nori, cut it out!” you run over to her, and pull her back up onto the bridge- she is clearly displeased by this.

“Princess! Just because you have all the money in the world doesn’t mean you get keep it from others, ya know? Now let me go!” She grumbles, trying to shake you off.

“Enough, you two.” Itachi says, pulling the two of you apart.

His sharingan are active, and that causes both of you to stop talking.

“Something wants us to go down into that treasure. Can you feel it? Clawing at the back of your mind?” he says, his patterned eyes looking down at both of you.

You stop and think- and isolate the feeling. This greed- it isn’t yours. While you wouldn’t pass this up regardless, you wouldn’t be this direct about it. And Nori….

“S-sorry, sensei. Something seems to be affecting my mind…” She mumbles.

“Break out of it, Nori. Just like any other Genjutsu.” Itachi responds.

You concentrate- and shatter the influencing genjutsu! (No roll required due to score)

Nori seems to have trouble- you remember her having problems with Ebisu’s bell genjutsu as well.

“Here, Nori. Look into my eyes.” Itachi says, prompting her to look up.

She makes eye contact with him, and in an instant, whatever was influencing her seems to vanish.

“Remind me that we need to work on your Genjutsu resistance when we get home, Nori.” Itachi says, rising from the two of you.

Hinata seems fine, though Lemeza seems to have left the room.

“Sorry guys, I’ve run into things like this before. This whole room has to be a trap- to lure people to their deaths. Look.” he says, pointing from the door to the treasure on the floor…

It’s then that you see them- human skeletons, cradling different pieces of treasure. Quite the effective defense…

“Here, Lemeza. I can help you break it with my Sharingan.” Itachi says, walking over to the Archaeologist.

After a moment, he’s ready to continue. You force yourself to look straight ahead, to avoid falling under the spell of the treasure again- even though you know that isn’t really how it works. Best not to risk it.

Once on the other side, the five of you take a look at the large sculpted tree. It’s quite large, filling the room up to the ceiling. It’s very detailed as well, being incredibly lifelike.

There also seem to be spiral patterns worked into it as well. Just what are these trees all about?

“I’d wager this tree is part of our ticket to the next area.” Lemeza says, looking at it.

Everyone turns to look at him as he studies the tree.

“A trap like that has to defend something, and I doubt this sculpture is what the purpose of this place is. It also looks like a dead end, which doesn’t make any sense.” the doctor says, smoking a new cigarette.

The four of you take a seat and relax while Lemeza inspects it further.

30 minutes and 4 cigarettes later, he takes off his hat and sits down.

“Well, I’m officially out of ideas. It requires power of some kind, but I don’t see any way to power it, or any additional mechanisms…..”

You look the tree up and down…

-[Norihime Genius]-

These people were ancient, and didn’t have super complex machinery, right? But you know one thing they must have been able to utilize….”

Chakra.

“Everyone, channel your chakra into the tree!” you shout, standing and placing your hands on the sculpture.

Nori, Hinata and Itachi do so, and on your mark, begin to channel chakra into the tree.

You feel your reserves drain, slowly… it must be working!

A swirling blue light begins to fill the tree, from the base at first, working it’s way all the way to the top through the spiral patterns.

When it reaches the top, it spreads out amongst the branches and into the leaves….

And the stones buds bloom. Stone flowers blooming…. Now you’ve seen it all.

With a dull thud, the wall opposite the the tree opens, leaving another path forward.

“Chakra, huh? I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. If the legends are to be believed, we owe our entire existence to those early practitioners of chakra. These ruins may just date back to those times….” Lemeza ponders.

Onwards, then. Might as well get to the heart of this place...

After a quick vote, you decide to head down. What could be up, anyway? There were no other exits, according to Lemeza.

Just to be sure, you opt to make another shadow clone, and send it up the stairs. You begin heading down, and instruct your clone to pop if it finds anything interesting.

You walk, and walk, and walk.

It takes what seems like an age to reach the bottom, but as you approach, you’re greeted by a horrific sight. Surrounding the base of the tower are what look to be people- people turned to wood. These people, with small branches sprouting off off of them in wild directions, seem to be exulting the heavens, with arms outstretched and held high.

“What…. Is this?” Hinata says, repulsed.

“Are they… dead?” Nori says peering out a window into the ground below.

“Come, girls. We need to keep moving. We’ll investigate once we reach the bottom.” Itachi says from the front of the group.

Once you reach the ground, you can see them up close- these were people. They had to be. The features were too distinct- too real.

You turn to see Hinata activate her Byakugan.

“These people have just the slightest trace of chakra signatures…. They’re long dead, but… it seems as if as they changed, they were drained of chakra and their life force…” she says, analyzing the “corpses” of these tree people.

They died like this? You cannot help but think of the flower you harvested earlier. Was this something similar?

You look up, and take in your surroundings. You’re in a large underground cavern, with the tower you just exited going back up towards the ceiling, meeting the cavern in several spots- most likely different entrances and exits to the ruins above.

Looking across the ground level, the dead people are all arranged outwards from another set of doors. These doors are open, with a pale blue light radiating from inside.

You call attention to this fact, with everyone gathering up at the base of the tower.

“This certainly got a lot more interesting than I expected…” Lemeza says, somewhat dejectedly shaking an empty container of Norihime branded cigarettes.

The rest of the party murmurs in agreement, and begins to walk towards the opening...

Your group along wanders along this blue tinted hallway- your steps echoing along as you do so.

The hallway seems to shift as you walk along, turning over time into a passageway that looks to be constructed entirely out roots. You know this all to be stonework by now, but the effect is striking, nonetheless. At the end of the hallway, a small door awaits, again adorned with the image of a giant tree.

Lemeza opens it- after all you didn’t come this far just to turn back now!

Inside is what seems to be a shrine- the far wall is intricately decorated with a great mural, depicting again a great tree, but it’s different than before. Along the base of the tree, people are bowed in worship. And a top it, a blossoming flower has opened to reveal… a woman?

This seems to be far more detailed than anything you’ve encountered so far, and Lemeza wastes no time in going to inspect it. The room itself is somewhat bare beyond the mural, although there seems to be a small offering box in front of the shrine.

The group spends some time investigating the room, but seemingly finding nothing else of interest.

It’s at this point that your clone breaks and returns to you.

Your first thought if of fire- black burning fire.

A man in an Akatsuki jacket, with Kisame by his side is addressing you….

“Tell Itachi that I am here. I’m sure we have much to discuss…”

A glowing pair of red eyes meet your own, and it’s the last thing the clone sees.

As you gasp and come back to reality, you can see something else happened in your momentary lapse of consciousness- Dr. Tamaishi stands in the doorway, alone.

“Well now, it certainly does seem like you’ve discovered something, haven’t you? Hohoho…. "

His face is twisted up in an unnatural grin...
