How did you get here? Floating in a pitch black cyclone of nothingness. You stick your hand outside the veil of nothing and it screams in pain that consumes your whole body. You shiver as the heat is ripped from you by some unknown force. An impact from your side forces you to look at a spectral form kicking you in the ribs, your breath shallow as it does.

For what feels an eternity, the torment continues, until the blackness is consumed by a flash of light. It slowly shifts between the colors of the rainbow until dying out and leaving you in darkness. The light has done nothing to stop the torment, but you feel more in control. Your eyes open and while most is out of focus, one thing is.

>This will determine what character you are playing. Choose carefully. Some roles were already voted for on my Twitter in a poll, if you were a part of the poll you can vote now or not, I can't stop you. Consider it a reward for sticking with me after almost 2 months of radio silence.

>This is a reboot of Superhuman Legacy Quest with hopefully less mistakes and rocky starts. I realize many people liked SLQ but, following events in real life, it digs up things I don't want to think about now. It was already dying before I left it for 2 months, the last thread pulling 4 people in 3 hours, so it was obvious many people didn't like the direction I was taking it. I have no illusions about it, I fucked up in the beginning and ran damage control for a while, then everything else suffered for it. I'll stop the stupid blog post now.

You barely open your eyes and search your surroundings, trying to be subtle. Julio is spinning that damn knife he's so proud of, right after poisoning you too, how could he be so cold after trying to kill his best friend? You vouched for him to get into the gang's circle, and this is how he repays you? At the very least, he seems distracted. You grip your knuckles tightly and stand up, wincing through the pain.

He spins right to you and his eyes go wide as you crawl to your feet limply, though you feel your strength returning and the pain receding. You finally raise to a standing position and try to square up, but a pain in your side prevents a straight posture. Standing crooked, arms raised, you prepare to fight Julio.

Then he runs, bolts away without even a look back. What a pussy, how'd he have the stones to axe you in the first place? The pain in your side feels better, maybe you were just having a reaction to the poison. The basement of Cuervo's seems darker than usual, and both the floor and you are covered in blood. Strange, there's no cuts on you.

Cool, thanks. I'm actually no author, and the reason there's stupid amounts of swearing is the character's experience and almost dying, expect it to change. Trust me, it's better than a year ago.

You run up the stairs, still a little sore, and burst out into the bar proper. It's empty, save the bartender Guillermo. The streets outside are spattered in a light shower of rain, the few pedestrians walking swiftly to their destinations, heedless of one another save the occasional nod of recognition. It's a sleepy night in Faraday City, but one development makes you livid.

"Where's Julio?!" Your voice comes out hoarse, making the message sound more threatening to Guillermo than it was supposed to.

"I don't know Mike! He booked it out of here like there was a raid, but there's nothing!" He nearly drops the glass he was cleaning, startled by your sudden outburst, reflexively lapsing into shouting himself.

You force yourself to calm down. It may be justified, but right now anger isn't helpful. It takes a lot of effort and more than a few mumbled curses, but you do it. Guillermo finishes polishing the fumbled glass, then starts polishing his thick glasses.

"Did he screw you over on the Lamb candy deal? Also, you've got a bit of blood on you, might want to get cleaned up." He's talking about the drugs running through Lower Faraday, but the reminder of what you trusted Julio with almost breaks your cool. He pulls out a green hoodie and an extra pair of jeans, your "persuasion" clothes.

>"You could say that."
>"Just get me a drink, Guillermo."
>"I'm going to kill him, he betrayed the Amps."

You take the clothes from Guillermo and resond curtly on your way to the bathroom.

"He betrayed the Amps, I'm going to kill him."

The door slams behind you and the flickering light turns on as you peel off your soaked shirt. Inspecting yourself as you replace your pants, the only notable injuries are some bruised ribs and a deep gash on your shoulder. As you look at the gash, a shiver runs through you and the light goes dark. It comes back on in a flash and you see a figure in the mirror. It's coal black with bloodshot eyes and a terrifying scowl, then the form fades and it's just you in the mirror.

The gash is gone and your ribs are now the same color as the rest of your skin. You quickly pull on the clean clothes, pinning the electric blue pin to your hoodie to identify your status as an enforcer in the Amps. You step away from the mirror and take a seat on the toilet.

You run out the door and immediately head to Julio's apartment, it's close by so it doesn't take long. You have his neighbor buzz you in, having talked with him a few times before and run up the stairs to the second floor. You swiftly kick down the cheap panel door to his apartment and it flies open, not even latched. Looking around, everything seems ordinary save for the fact that Julio's bedroom door is open.

You rush to the door, knuckles in hand and turn on the light. Nobody ambushes you. It's just empty. Then you notice something, there's somebody in the bed. You rip the covers off and find the last thing you expected.

Julio.

"AH! Oh, shit man, you scared me. Why the dusters?" Normally you'd smash his face in right now, but he has that confused look only he can pull off, brow furrowed but still partially bored.

>It's a trick, smash his face in.

"You tried to kill me!"

"What? Is this a prank? Where's the camera?" He seems genuine, as long as you've known Julio, he has never been a good liar. Still.

"Where were you 20 minutes ago?"

"Here, sleeping. What's going on Mike? You look like you haven't slept all week and you're wearing your spares." Julio climbs out of bed fully clothed, wearing his blue pin on a white tee, and scratches his head.

"We've got some sort of cape imitating you, must be."

"Well we need to tell the boss, I know I had to report on the Lamb deal, but I planned to do it tomorrow. This guy's got a shot!" He snatches his landline from the nighttable and quickly dials the number for the boss.

After a long amount of talk on the other end and informing on the situation, Julio puts down the phone. He's wiping his forehead of sweat and letting out a sigh of relief. You put your hand on him and feel a cool breeze.

The breeze abates and you realize a small wisp of black smoke hovers above your hand, and it quickly engulfs you, bringing back that darkness. That settles it, you have powers. What they are exactly you aren't sure. Suddenly a red light throbs through the darkness, like a beating heart, and you see a small picture. It's of that figure from the mirror.

It shows you stepping out of the form and flashes to you intimidating a guy into paying protection, highlighting a red mist getting pulled into your body. The picture cuts to the basement and shows that same red mist pushing into the fake Julio, then he flees. It shifts to the bathroom when the lights went out, showing you in a shell of red mist.

You're starting to get it now. Somehow that poison made you able to control fear, it was probably an accident on the assassin's part. The last picture is of that same monster tearing apart a screaming form.

>You have learned Basic Fear Manipulation
>You have become aware of Fear Form

You comeback from sppacing out annd Julio has collected himself. He looks at you.

"All the other enforcers are dead, the boss escaped the worst of it. He wants to see you as soon as possible."

"Thanks Julio, get some sleep." You need some time to process this alone, you get powers from a murder attempt, everyone else is dead, and this whole fiasco almost had you kill your best friend.

"Hey, Mike, don't beat yourself up too much about this. The boss is glad you survived, and I think he's going to bring you into a higher position." You swallow your guilt and wave to him as you exit the apartment. Outside you see his neighbors looking at you nervously, you did kick in the door after all. The breeze rushes by again and you feel invigorated.

"It's all fine, was just worried about my friend." You feel their fear disappear, but you're already on top of the world. You feel like you could punch a hole in the wall right now, but you control the urge.

You need to save that for later.
