Welcome back, everyone, to Mecha Space Pirate Quest's 44th installment! Due to a last-minute snafu at work, I have to be up very, very early tomorrow...so tonight's thread is going to pause early, I'll bump it during the couple of hours I have at the office Saturday, and continue when I get off work in the early afternoon. Hopefully we'll be at a good stopping point then. It worked pretty well last time, after all. As always, you know who you are. The Bull of Io, the Boxer, the Black Ogre himself, Roarke Starwind of the Iron Kestrels.

Although I haven't finished adding the stats of your transport to your pirate fleet (it's a standard Striker with a single Light Beam Battery and two mechbays that hold a total of 20 machines), the rest of them are up (and cheeky peekies will observe an interesting plot point if they're perceptive). Your pirate fleet now consists of six starships, with a whopping 303 mecha between them. The transport itself has no aces and no pilots, it's used to ferry important people from the other ships around. The Heart of the Sunshine (for which Red Siren has rejected half a dozen new names) is NOT on this list, and neither is the Archen, because she's an independent sort of girl.

Last time, we learned a little about Roarke as a younger pilot, you gave Mohammed some good advice about girls, Cornelius confirmed Fatima's condition, and Avalon attacked the Gate of Mars with three of their titanic lance-shaped warships. You, sitting in a transport without enough guns to scratch a proper warship and just twenty mecha at your disposal, wisely decided to leave in the confusion with Fatima in tow.

Let's see how successful you are, shall we?

Additionally, after running a few simulated battles between the new Rhinehawk and a Wels-class, I decided to give your flagship an additional buff. As a smaller ship, its main advantages were speed and tankiness. After concluding that the Rhinehawk's best bet to beat a Wels' massive fore'ard battery is maneuvering behind it, I significantly increased its speed to represent its massive engine portfolio and the maneuverability imposed by having six wings. Almost unheard of for a ship of that size, the new Rhinehawk can execute a full 180-degree rotation in a single turn and on its own outrun most anything the UJCIDF can throw at it.
>>
Huh one of the captains has an A class crew, interesting
>>
>>48524478

I'm also using the player-submitted Roc, with some modifications.

As it stands, heavy Vernier use, overcharged powerplants, and bio-powerplants are technology that, if it currently exists, is not in the hands of pirates. Similarly, since I was flat-out wrong when I said thruster and vernier systems couldn't be affected by Space Efficiency, I'm lumping that in there too. All of these things are possible and CAN show up...but that's technology that you, Roarke Starwind, do not currently have access to until you loot a mech that uses them.
>>
>>48524527
And apparently their Stone Soldiers, very interesting
>>
The Goshawk, formerly the missileboat Orestes of the Green Skulls pirate fleet, has no captain currently and only a complement of Harpies. This is because it didn't come from a pirate crew that joined you, but was reconstructed from the gutted hulk of one of Galbadie's vessels. You might want to consider who you put in charge of it, and its name might change if you choose one particular NPC or another.

"How come nobody ever picks a fight when I have my warship with me anymore?" You grumble.

"The last time you had the Rhinehawk, the Green Skulls were torn to shreds." Cornelius smiles peacefully as the forces of gravity press down on both of you, the ship rumbling as it rockets out of the atmosphere and the pressure decreases.

"The entire galaxy is cowards." You grumble.

"I'm sure if you put in a call to the UJCIDF they would be happy to oblige you." Cornelius' smile grows even more tranquil. You wonder if he's been dipping into the painkillers.

You glance anxiously over at Fatima. Her chest rises and falls with her quiet breathing. You check the straps on her cot, making sure she's adequately strapped down.

"...Besides, this is going to be all over the airwaves! In fact, I know it is. I listened in." Cornelius' wrinkled face smiles even more, if possible, "Your reputation will grow even more. Jeremy would be proud."

"I hope so. The old man did right by me, I want to do right by his memory." You smooth back Fatima's hair from her face, pushing it away from that hateful circlet without directly touching the metal. "Why did Avalon show up now?"

"Mmm. Probably because it was all over the airwaves that you were causing a stir outside New Medina." You jump nearly a foot in the air and turn around to glare reproachfully at Samantha, who smiles cutely, "Sorry for sneaking in. I was wondering the same thing. I have no proof, but if I was them, I would have somehow infiltrated or hijacked a satellite or maybe tapped into one of the floating ansibles and waited for a good opportunity to strike. Or they could have slipped an agent onto Mars itself and had him call their ship at the opportune moment. The timing of this attack was too precise to be a coincidence." The former Corporal goes up on tiptoe, glancing over your shoulder at Fatima curiously.

"I've been listening in to reports of the attack, the Holy Militia was about to descend on the surface after you and Rashad when Avalon showed up. They were caught out of position, and the Duke's forces were able to launch a concerted alpha strike on the gate." She sighs heavily, looking worried, "It's not destroyed, but it's been heavily damaged and won't be usable for a while. Those ships of theirs are no joke...but that's all Avalon could do. Three ships against dozens isn't a fair fight, an-" She stops talking and stares at the display. You glance at it too.

"That's a Wels-class coming out of warp." You say, mildly.

"That's the Cincinnatus coming out of warp, yes." She replies. Another ship comes into view around the curve of the planet, with Jovian lines, but bigger than any Wels you've seen, "...I don't know that one, but I feel like Avalon is going to have a very, very bad day today." She sounds a little bit smug.

You grunt in acknowledgment. You can't help but grudgingly respect Eustace's commitment to his people, there's a good chance of him dying or being captured if he doesn't pull back. but he's accomplished his objective of limiting the reinforcements Mars can send to the Extrasolar Division of the SSL's Joint Forces. If Fatima was awake, you're sure she would be livid. Despite that respect, though, Eustace is a Green Men sympathizer and a genetically modified human. If it was one-on-one, you might kill him yourself just for that.

"Where is Rashad!? I want him dead! I want his mech dead! I want his head on a doily on my new desk NOW!" General Fairchild snaps into her PC.

Josiah McAllister's voice, by contrast, is calm and unruffled, "How fortuitous, but don't you think a doily isn't enough? You'd get blood everywhere." In the background, one can hear the shriek of a mech's thrusters winding down, and the sound of metal scraping against metal.

"Not my problem. Rashad and that THRICE-DAMNED ROARKE STARWIND are!" The General glares at the staff members staring at her until they get back to work preparing her shuttle for takeoff.

"You're incorrect. Commodore Abujamal is dead. It seems he found what he was looking for, perhaps he's finally at peace." The pilot priest's tone doesn't change one iota.

"He caught up with Starwind's squad?" Fairchild heaves a sigh of relief, leaning against the wall as the shuttle lifts off towards the Iulia Maesa, hovering in orbit off the shipyards of Phobos. "Good, against a team of pirate captains and aces, it's not surprising. He took at least one with him, right? I hope he peeled apart that pompous slut Red Siren's cockpit and carved her like an overdressed turkey."

"I'm afraid no such thing transpired. According to my sensors, the heat trails from Starwind's squadron continue on past this point. One stayed behind, and put an end to poor Rashad personally. At first I thought the Khanda Custom had suffered a malfunction and exploded in the desert, but closer examination of the shrapnel reveals that its main body was already shredded when he likely deliberately detonated it. It seems its fin array was literally battered apart, and the main body's armor was literally dug into until his enemy reached the cockpit. One set of tracks leaving the area on foot, I ran the prints through my mech's computer. It's not exact but the prints generally match those of a Thoroughbred MP from the War. Do you want me to cover it up?"

General Fairchild's hand shakes. She takes several deep breaths, inwardly going to her happy place. An isolated garden. A beautiful tennis coach at the Academy. A summer day too warm for clothes. She makes a decision, "No. There isn't any point, he'll have footage of this on the holonet within a few days. Although his motives may have been noble, even though the story will play well with certain segments of the public, a clear and present crime has been committed. Let's not dirty our hands with this one, and let the public decide for itself."

"How atypical, Hermione. Do you perhaps have some sympathy for the poor Martian princess?" McAllister's voice is amused.

"Keep a civil tongue in your head or I'll cut it off, priest. I didn't know Rashad was using one of THOSE to keep her in line. Both of them are disgusting, abominable men, and the only thing wrong with one of them killing the other is that I didn't get to put a plasma bolt through the winner's groin when they were done beating their chests and having their little gorilla fight. Get Ensign Young and prepare to...oh what the hell is it now!?"

At precisely that moment, the Avalonian ships pop out of warp and commence their attack.

You watch the battle unfold. The Avalonian ships are starting to look rather ragged, but space is littered with the husks of smaller Martian cruisers. Gradually, the Avalonian formation breaks, taking advantage of a momentary lull to split up and dart away in separate directions. As it does, you see that you were wrong. There weren't three ships, there were five. Two of them are smaller, likely vessels that flew in on sublight speed instead of warping in, probably scout vessels of some kind. They're still easily big enough to be heavy cruisers, if not full-sized battleships.

One of them is, unfortunately, coming in your direction and moving faster than you are, and you're still not far enough away from Mars to safely activate your microgate projector and blow this pop stand.

Painted a vivid blue and gold, this particular Avalonian vessel is extremely damaged, half of its beam batteries are melted to slag and its flight is wobbly. From a glance you'd say that all of its weapons systems, CIWS turrets included, have been damaged. As far as its mech complement, you'd hesitate to say they've all been destroyed, but the Martians and the Avalonians both were killing each other's mecha at a truly horrific pace during the battle.

Having most of their shit totaled is pretty powerful too and pretty much negates the need for us to dance around like that.

Ya but we know that Avalon does genetic modification so their soldiers might be brick shit houses and hijacking the ship might lose us a lot of men, its better to play it smart when you don't know all the details

"Cornelius. Take over, keep her safe. I'm going to go deal with this." You take Samantha and head for the bridge.

You want to steal this ship. You want to steal it and any sweet, new mecha on board. You want to plunder it and go from a six-ship fleet to a seven-ship fleet. First, though, you need information, so you decide to hail them and figure out what they want while their ship is following yours around like a curious labrador retriever sniffing after a cocker spaniel.

Unfortunately, they beat you to it. A woman's voice, lightly accented and absurdly confident, rings across the bridge's comms.

"Bonjour, little peasant ship! Don't be scared, now, I'm about to make you very, very rich if you just be good little serfs and give us a teensy bit of help, non? Please, give coordinates for a safe path for us to avoid the dread Saracens and their allies. You must be fleeing too, why don't we go together, non?"

>[What say?]
>>
>>48526460
They've gated in just now. They need another 24hrs b4 they can gate out again.
>>
>>48526460
We cant even gate away yet, never mind the other ships have a martian fleet between them and us.
>>
>>48526433
The issue I see is that we are assuming that they are fully done right now and that they have no mechs at all. As is, we have no data about their ship or mech compliments, so using the parlay to scan and gather data would be a good idea. If they are going to be hostile, then we get their shit. If they surrender, we get their shit and can ransom them back to whomever we want AND get intel.
>>
>>48526479
Well shit now we have to trick them. Little peasant ship my balls.
>>
>>48526479
>We'll I never been one to not help a lady in distress, I'll guide you to a little colony I go to when I need to lie low

Once we get her their bring out the rest our fleet and strong arm her to surrender
>>
>>48526490

This is one of the smaller ships that approached under sublight, presumably they can gate they just don't know anywhere safe to go. Duke Eustace de Rothschild-Beauchamps landed practically on top of a Wels-class and Suleiman 1 and made it out alright, but his ship was significantly bigger than this and the firefight destroyed a colony.

"Mademoiselle Captain..." You inject a note of awe into your voice, "From anyone else, I would not trust their sincerity, but you, your voice has the angelic chords of a gentlewoman. You are of the highest noble blood, are you not? It would be my duty, nay, my privilege, to assist you in any way possible."

"Oui, monseuir!" You can hear her preening, "My word, I had not expected the master of such a small and unimpressive vessel to be so discerning. I have misjudged you sorely, your words have the gallant timbre of a true knight, a man I could trust with my virtue as well as my life. Mon chevalier, such a man should not pilot this little...what is the word...brig? Non, it is more like a dinghy. You should be resplendent in my colors, piloting a gallant mech for ze honor of the Lady and the Queen."

You heave a fake sigh, "Alas, I once had a far greater vessel than this, yet fate and ill fortune conspired to leave me with this tiny vessel, hauling cargoes to make my bread."

"Tragique! Unjust!" She gasps, "Mon poor peasant knight, so mistreated. Despite the mud on your hands, I shall lift you up and make you one of my footmen. Trust your Countess Loriette Marie le Kennedy, I will comfort you."

"I shall serve you always, my lady." You vow melodramatically, making a gesture like milking a cow to Red Siren, Karen, and Oda Yoritomo, who all grin wickedly, "I know of a colony where the military dogs do not go, free from their taxes and their battleships."

"...You do not pay taxes? Well, I suppose all men must have some flaws, I always have believed that a good, firm taxing, it keeps the peasants in line and makes them appreciate their simple lives more." She momentarily sounds disappointed, then cheers up, "Ah, do not be despirited, mon chevalier, a noble spirit like yours should not pay them in the first place, non? Ohohohoho! "...As my most trusted of knights. You shall wear my favor into battle, and be by my side in every joust. Do you pilot, mon duckling? I shall teach you, you shall want for nothing, not even the most private of lessons from your Countess. Your voice is so soothing, I could enjoy it all day, even with the godless Saracens after us. Oh, as for your underlings, I am sure I could find them work most meaningful in my stables or maintaining my beloved Anseis. It is a kindness and an honor, non?"

"Non." You reply, with a cheeky smile. Clemmy is looking around in confusion, but then suddenly light dawns, and she grins. Samantha is covering her mouth, trying not to laugh.

"I am most eager to meet you in person, my dear...my dear...OH! How clumsy! How unforgivable of me! In my haste and rudeness, I did not ask your poor little name, oh duckling I am so sorry! So repentant! Such tactlessness, even to an inferior, is beneath the honor of one of the Twelve Peers."

"Countess, my Countess, it is alright, you have done nothing wrong. I am Dude McCool, of Io." Your teeth glitter as you smile, even though she cannot see it. You put a hand on your chest, posing dramatically like a lead actor on the stage, "Follow me closely, I am sending you the coordinates now."

"Oui~" Her voice becomes rather...shy... "I am looking forward to meeting you in person. Perhaps...non, depending on your skill, it would be an insult to make you my squire, but it would be a good way to learn if you are inexperienced with Striders. We shall see, duckling. Either way, your life of paradise has begun."

Comms end. You take a bow, and your companions burst into applause.

We got Fatima to come around, we can do this
>>
"Seven. Ships." You announce as the helmswoman sets a course and the ship prepares for warp, followed by the Avalonian vessel.

"Hahahaha! Roarkey~ You're stealing from Avalon~" Clemmy pinches one of your cheeks, "What a patriot." She kisses you once, then again, with a hunger most fierce. You put your arm around her, and she nuzzles against your shoulder, "Even Fairy wouldn't be mad at that~" She perks up suddenly, "Oh! I should message her! She should be at our wedding as my maid of honor, then when we have babies she can be a fairy godmother!"

"I don't think that's a very good ide-" Sam starts, probably trying to gently dissuade the Butcher, but Karen puts a hand over her mouth and shakes her head quickly.

"I'd say the ham was a little thick-cut, but the meal itself was delicious...and the whine to come at its conclusion will be very sweet." Rosita grins smugly, "Roarke, my little duckling."

"My dirty peasant boy~ Perhaps a riding lesson? Fufufufu~" Sam's eyes flash, and she licks her lips.

"Mon chevalier~" Karen bats her eyes, snickering, "Oh yes, wear MY favor into battle~ All fifty-nine-point-five tons of invincible, perfectly engineered, PERFECTION of favor~"

All four of them break out into simultaneous gales of laughter.

Red Siren's scarlet lips curl into a warm smile, "You know, darling, after what my good friend Alice said and after the little dust-up on Mars...I've decided I rather adore weddings. Don't you?" She leans on you, rubbing her fingertip in a little spiral against your shoulder. You almost don't feel the twist of the ship warping, as your danger senses ring out like a battle klaxon.

"For once, Red, you're right. Roarke, you think I'd look good in white, right? I know you wouldn't say no to some wedding cake, so...um..." Karen's face turns red, "So it wouldn't be bad if there were...if there were..you know...m-more weddings in general and...and I think I'd make a pretty cute bride..." She clasps her hands together behind her back, looks down at her feet, and digs her toe in a little half-circle against the floor.

"Nyahaha!" Clemmy continues nuzzling you, grinning without a shred of repentance at the trouble she's caused.

Samantha, loyal, gentle Samantha, meets your gaze with the sympathy of a gentle saint and mouths the word 'Run'.

Suddenly, you feel like you should have been just a little more understanding of Mohammed. If only there was a cupboard around to hide in before YOU get stolen.

Fear rushes through you like icy water down your spine. You examine the situation with the detached eye of a keen strategist.

Clemmy is in front of you. Red Siren has one of your arms. Karen moves up and takes your other hand, smiling hopefully.

You've got three adversaries, one a close combat specialist right in front of you, and her two allies flanking you. Your only ally can't interfere with the others without hurting her best friend.

The distance between you and the door seems to grow, and grow, and grow, stretching ever-wider.

There's only one thing to do. You resort to grappling. You put your arms around all three of them at once, as much as you can. You meet Samantha's eyes and jerk your head in a 'get over here' gesture with a smile. She scampers over and cuddles against you too.

"I like weddings, and I get the hint. You could have just asked me. But...who am I supposed to marry first?" You look at them with innocent confusion, "I mean, I love all of you." You give them each a kiss, and let go, "Well, I'll let you settle that. Come propose to me then, I have to check on Cornelius and Fatima, I want to make sure she handled warp alright." With a sunny smile all the brighter for being completely sincere, you release them.

Four very happy girls watch you depart. Samantha sighs happily, "I thought asking would bother him, so I didn't, but he still said yes..."

"I've been waiting for this for so long!" Karen says giddily, clasping her hands together, "I won't let him down! I'll work even harder from now on!"

"Roarke is just the best." Clemmy notes.

"He's so cute when he's trying to be clever, isn't he?" Red Siren nods.

"Well thank fuck you finally sorted that out." Miles snorts, "Now which of you is doing it first?"

Violence, predictably, erupts. You're already back at the infirmary, though, and blissfully unaware of it.

The funny thing is that Roarke is kind of a Lu Bu. From the very beginning of this quest, he's been an exceptionally good pilot, the brute-force problem solver of Ozark's Iron Kestrels, all the more remarkable for his unarmed mecha and bizarre fighting style. He's also susceptible to the charms of women, and does crazy things without really thinking for their sake. By contrast, his other combat skills lag far behind his combat potential, and a lot of his development comes from growing as a pirate and a leader.

I realize this may not be the best place to ask this but you guys are the only Gundam Nerds I know.

I'm trying to find a Gundam game I played on PS2 with my friends. I have a boner for Zeon grunt suits and their design derivatives. I just can't get enough of the weird mono-eyes, stocky and fat limbs, gas mask face, etc. Absolutely love the Rick Dom.

I also like weird tank-mech hybrids. They're dumb and can't fulfill the niches that tanks and mechs do, but I like guntanks and their ilk. This pretty much comes from the Armored Core 5 trailer when the mech just rolls over an Abrams tank.

Well, manipulating the military to a high degree for starters, likely removing people so her own supporters could get in, Has a good relationship with the first mate, who killed both our brother and crippled our captain. Tried to frame us for blowing up a colony, has been actively trying to screw us over, picked Keith as her face for SOUL B, is a lady neckbeard, WAY too angry to the point of willing to start wars due to her racist grudge and not giving a shit about civilians.

It is a long list.
>>
>>48529311

I didn't say that there are no unambiguously evil characters (of which Fairchild would still not be one), but the quest in itself does not actually have a 'main bad guy' as such.

>>
>>48529490
Oh I agree with you on the green men. They are manipulative bastards. But the Avalonians aren't green men. They got hooked in by a pretty girl with a crazy forest robot and began treating her like a goddess. That could be due to a more subtle version of the spores, or sheer charisma, but they are not the main problem. There is also the fact that her Racism caused her to act stupidly and got innocents hurt. If you hate a group, fine. We wiped out the green skulls because fuck those guys, and screwed over Rashad because fuck him as well. However, be smart with your hate and don't attack until you can at least get a figure on the situation.
>>
>>48529581
I think she has a better grasp of the situation than us to be honest and most of the colonist were killed by the greenie loving bastards.

Plus seeing as at least some of the green fuckers previous force were regular human sympathizers they have a justifiable reason to hate them.
>>
>>48529637

>>
>>48529931
It'll be fine we've done it before, what time do you think you'll be running tomorrow?
>>
>>48529637
I would disagree. Knowledge or understanding does little when blinded by your hate. Justifiable or not, her shots did more damage to the colony than the enemy and in acting hastily, she caused the death of the colony. She was also using the populace to move every scrap of evidence that she could.

Justified or not, she is not a good person, and her actions show a great personal greed and lust. Also she's auntie to Lysa; Darth Idol herself. Thats a bad sign no matter what.
>>
>>48529991
>her shots did more damage to the colony than the enemy
I dont know man, the enemy ship is what blew the colony asunder. A Wels class doesnt even have that sort of firepower. Plus no one on both sides expected a battleship to just pop up out of the blue.
>>
>>48530086
I mean her shot did bupcuss to the enemy at all. As in, she bloody missed and di no damage to the target and thus cause a horrible counter attack. She is a military leader. Being cool under pressure, ESPECIALLY with civilians on the line is important. Then she tried to spin the destruction of the colony as our fault to push her plans.
>>
>>48530136
To be fair what are you supposed to do when an enemy warship jumps in your face? Not shoot at it? And god forbid anyone in the history of combat misses a shot.
>>
>>48530171
Well considering she can use all the ship actions at once, she could have repositioned the ship so she wouldn't HIT THE COLONY IF SHE MISSED and then fired. From the way it sounds, the colony was pretty much between the ships. If she moved to the side or away from it, she could still fire and not risk them. Even luring them away. Instead she straight on attacked first with no plan. And yes, people miss shots. But she is a part of the defensive fleet. Risking your charges is a bad idea.
>>
I can't wait to see what this girl looks like Wong makes her ugly just to fuck with us
>>
>>48530243
Well they were already collateral damage, why would she care much about what happens to them? And it doesnt really matter that she hit the colony because she still isnt the one who shot a hole in it, the green weenies could have repositioned their ship so a miss wouldnt kill a colony. Thats assuming either ship can even move that far considering neither are built for mobility.
>>
>>48530086
She did destroy that ship that Sam and Siren pranked her with and the whole crew with it. Bitch is evil.
>>
>>48530340
Well yeah but at least she has a good reason to hate space elves.
>>
>>48530296
Because taking one hit could have left them with just a horribly damaged colony instead of a destroyed one and it sort of does matter. Their reaction was due to one idiot, who fell on his sword afterwards, that got startled because they were fired at. Because when you are shot at, flight or fight tends to kick in. And she could care because unlike what she wants to do as queen bitch, her job was to protect and serve. Using her people as collateral and propaganda is not a good thing.

We also don't even know why she hates space elves. For all we know she wants to be the one treated as a queen with a giant harem of elf bitches serving her every need. We just know she has a hard on for roark's mom and wants to kill them even if she has to send the majority of the population to the blender.
>>
>>48530403

A really scary pilot would be someone like Judeau, who borders on being a jedi in a mech, or Kamille with his ridiculous precognition, Amuro going off sheer displayed skill onscreen, or Uso with the highest killcount of any gundam protagonist.

It was asked in an earlier thread if I would have done anything differently if I could do it again, and in retrospect I should have not used Judeau's name straight from the anime. I intended for him to be a throwaway character, but now I like his personality and motivations so much that he'll definitely keep making appearances.

Seconding vigorously. If that happened, the fates would align for the mid-season upgrade to happen within the week.

...Even though I have to remake it because I somehow lost it. Oh well, shouldn't take too long. Statting mechs isn't hard, statting ones that are boring but need stats (like the Scimitar and Tulwar and various Morgan II/Warmouth variants) is, because I'll start work and then get an idea for a weapon system for one of the Paladins and before I know it I'm hip-deep in something ridiculous.

Hey Wong, what happened to the Asians, South Americans and Africans? Did they take over Earth?
>>
>>48532427
I can agree with that. Compared to other pilots including Shin, Kira never really.. grew. Aside from that seed, he never improved his skill or tried different strategies, relying more on his machine and others than his own skill. Sure his bases could be considered high, but thats due to him being a coordinator and not his own merit.

Really, Jesus fits the Kira mold well in that regard. His machine is amazing with it's gun, but if someone closed in and he had no support, he'd get a nasty shock.

Uh... Fampai, all of those drawings, except Clemmy cup, were by me. Don't worry I got you guys covered next thread with another drawing. The ragequit artfag I think was the ACTUAL very first Kaiser. Well that will be a nice treat and yeah, I see the Kaiser being rather armored even when upgraded. Hell, for the command armor for the head, I picture a small slit for the sensors that opens up and reveals the visor, then the face like some sort of Alien or beast.

Not really.
Artificial diamonds are already separated from natural ones in price and prestige, that would just keep carrying on.

The journey back to Auditorium feels a lot longer than the journey there. Which is surprising, because waiting the requisite twenty-four hours between jumps while worrying about Fatima was bad enough without her having a needle in her head. You honestly hadn't considered that Cornelius couldn't do the surgery during the pause, but when he starts explaining the various medical reasons why he would prefer to do this in a gravity environment...all with the cheerful willingness to do the procedure anyway IF you're willing to accept risk after terrifying-sounding risk, everything from memory loss to brain hemorrhaging...you grudgingly accept it.

However, the Countess is more than happy to talk to you. Mostly explaining in exacting detail how she expects your underlings to address her...or rather to convey things from you to her, since she seems less than keen to speak to them directly...and the proper etiquette of an Avalonian footman. You tune out a lot of the information on what degree you should bow to and how you should be overjoyed at being so far elevated over the kowtow expected from a scullery maid or boot-polisher, and spend your time more productively flirting with her instead. She also talks rather a lot about how boorish the 'Gas Knights' of Jupiter are, and says even worse things about the Saracens.

For once, the girls are well-behaved, even with each other. They seem to be slightly shocked after your counterattack, which quells the teasing about the Countess' behavior a little. Samantha's Innocent Europan Princess face sees a lot of use, and all four are imitating the Countess' OHOHOHO laugh by the time you make the second jump.

Finally, you reach Auditorium. Almost as soon as you gate in, and are greeted by the neon scarlet glow of Red Siren's colony, the comm squawks at you.

"How garish! I expected a hive of dubious character...but someone has gone and slathered images of local slatterns all over it! Really, mon chevalier, it is time to leave such childish things behind. They are beneath you. You will escort me to operas, to great melees of a hundred Striders, to jousts where the Queen herself bestows a laurel on the winner, to contests of song where the instruments sculpted from the throats of the performers are art as much as the music. You will see bioluminescent whales of Paley's World, the majestic flights of the wyverns of Avalon, the..."

You tune her out and make a PC-call movement with your thumb and pinky finger along the side of your head to Karen, pointing at the Colony. The mechanic girl, trying not to snicker audibly at the Countess' assessment of Auditorium, gives you a perky nod and opens up a channel to your fleet, muttering into her PC and nodding several times.

"I am told that the dances of the cat-eared women of Qu'lir are something every connoisseur of the performing arts should experience at least once, but personally I think it sounds like vulgar trash and I shall not have you literally chasing tail, mon adorible` peasant knightling...I say, what a tawdry ship, is it part of a circus?" The Countess laughs as the Yamato slides out of a docking bay, the dragon and cloud patterns on it brilliantly visible, "Perhaps the clowns desired shore leave at these brothels, non? Ah, but I will not turn my nose up at it, no, so long as they can repair my ship and I can learn how best to strike at the underbelly of my enemies I will forgive the crudeness of these Solar aborigines."

You grab Oda's shoulders and wrestle the big guy back into his seat, practically having to put him into a chokehold to stop him from roaring at her in Japanese.

Grand Theft Starship, Kidnapping, Bank Fraud, and flagrant looting always put you in a good mood.

"Oh look, there's another one! Bonjour! Ah, they are fighting for the honor of vacating their bay for me, non?" You hear the Countess clapping her hands, "Or perhaps they, like you, do not pay their taxes and fear I am here to collect...oh look, a third!"

The Heavy Striker that slips out first is a bog-standard Jovian military light cruiser. To the nines. Most pirate ships have some unorthodox repairs or personal modifications, but this one is practically fresh out of some base or shipyard. The rather pointless green-and-brown classical camouflage pattern painted on it, and the black-and-white Iron Kestrels banner instead of the UJCIDF flag is the only thing that sets it apart.

On the other hand the second ship, the Medium Weighter, is clearly a pirate vessel and has been for decades. From its ranks of heavy beam cannons to the massive skull and crossbones worked onto its plasma-scarred bow, it speaks of countless raids and running gunfights from the law.

Casually, they move past your incoming vessels, assuming a loose flanking pattern. Your transport maneuvers to put the Harmonium between you and the Avalonian ship's remaining guns.

"Duckling, wait up! This rude man is in my way, I know you wish to lead me to the best spot, but you are being overly-hasty." She pauses for a moment, "Why do these ships all have the emblem of hawk and skull?"

"Oh look, Countess, I found my ship. it seems our meeting really was lucky for me." Your voice is as smooth as a velvet butter tin and you grin like a cat on a parakeet farm as the Rhinehawk and the rather plain black-and-white Goshawk, another Jovian cruiser contstructed similarly to the Yamato, emerge.

You hear her gasp, then she speaks in a sharp, suspicious voice, "That is a battleship most strange. Duckling, what naughtiness are you about?" You hear the sound of something smacking against her palm, like a riding crop or a ruler, or even a scabbarded sword

"Well, as you explained to me at length, everyone should know their place, right? I'm simply doing my job. Business as usual, as we say in the Belt. It's nice to finally be back at it after so long doing flash work like rescuing princesses and smiting villains." You lean on the arm of your chair, "Did you think I would lead a classy woman like you somewhere cheap, Countess? No, your stay shall be a very expensive one."

"You are him." Her voice is icy, and the sound of something smacking her palm intensifies, "The Duke, he told us about you. The pirate king of the asteroids, the Row-arc" She pronounces it with an accent as thick as the Kaiser's shield plating, "Starwind, the Hawk Admiral, the man with the white-faced Strider of obsidian. He may be tied with Belegor for second in power after gallant Sir Gavin of the Roland, but Duke Eustace is a scurrilous Rothschild and has the ridiculous pointed ears of the last dynasty, so I do not truly consider it praise that he respects you highly for his family is a family of thieves and marcher lords. You are a scoundrel, sir, and no true knight. Hmph!" That last sound contains a galaxy's worth of dismissiveness.

"And these are my Iron Kestrels." You spread your arms wide, and snap your fingers. Missile bays slide open, beam batteries swivel into position, and enough firepower (5800K worth of alpha strike) to annihilate a battleship is abruptly pointed at her ship, "Are you familiar with the phrase 'stand and deliver'?"

"Juno's tits, woman." You drop the chivalry for a moment, "There's a point where it stops being threatening and you flew right over it. I'm not some wet-behind-the-ears UJCIDF pup who studied drama at the Academy. I'm all for gallant last stands, but I could destroy your ship with a few words and you with it. Furthermore, I'm doing exactly what you wanted, repairing your ship and reuniting you with your people. You're just paying for it, which is natural and fair. I'm sure the eldest daughter of the Kennedy tribe with a lineage stretching back to whenever can afford another ship and to pay a ransom. Shouldn't you strive to avoid being so rude? I've kidnapped Martians who were more polite."

"Now you're stretching it, Roarke." Miles grumbles, "You didn't hear some of the things she said when she was in the brig and I had to feed her. All because I had a bite of her pudding, so what? It's called a service charge."

"What about Mohammed and the rest?" Richard points out.

"Oh, good point. You're so smart, Ricky-wicky." Your First Mate tugs on your Bosun's beard.

"So you're saying I'm more valuable alive?" The Countess' voice becomes speculative, "Then you're not going to shoot at me. Hmph, I could simply fly out of here."

"I could simply disable your engines. I have enough soldiers of my own for that, and they're free men. Of course, I expect you to resist. You might get hurt, and plenty of your servants will assuredly die. Why don't you ask them what they think?" Time is entirely on your side, you don't mind being chatty.

"Are you calling my servants cowards? Impudent ruffian! If you want me, I will be in my Anseis. We will live and die together." She cuts comms, her damaged ship stubbornly, hoplelessly floating in the midst of your formation.

You watch, and after a few minutes a bay opens, catapulting a brilliantly blue mech from its bay. Covered with sleek armor like a knight, its most distinctive feature is the proud mane of golden drills hanging behind its head. Unlike the Archen's nanofiber hair, these are stiff and metallic, maneuvering independently in a way that hints at having some purpose. An octet of large, adjustable thruster panels around the waist hint at a skirt, and it bears a shield so sculpted and ornate that it's almost hard to classify it in the same way as the Kaiser's slabs of metal.

You lean over towards Karen, "How is the Kaiser?"

"The chest armor and left-side shield aren't fully repaired, but the powerplant is fixed and the torso components themselves are just fine. It pays to know how to do things with minimal tools, and it's not as if grandpa and I weren't expecting some of our mecha to get damaged." Karen adjusts her glasses.

"You should be a spokeswoman for Red Comet Energy Drinks." You tug one of her pigtails, and instead of getting huffy she smiles and looks flattered.

"I had a lot of motivation." She mutters, looking at you from beneath her long eyelashes.

"Are you sure you wouldn't rather fight me face-to-face, all of that 'looking into the eyes of the enemy' stuff?" You aren't worried about taking another stab to the powerplant, per se, but you don't know what her mech can do and being too cocky for your own good is the only way you can see this situation ending badly for you. A sufficiently big head can topple even the strongest pilot, after all.

On the other hand, you think back on what Eustace said about a noble's augmentations and what you know of the Green Men from simflicks, a little uneasily. Fighting her face to face could end badly if an Avalonian noble is, by some chance, as strong as a Green Man. You doubt this is the case, but anything is possible.

Fortunately, she makes that choice for you, "Non. I no longer trust you, mon chevalier. You shall not be graced by my personal presence so easily...although you have a point. Your face! Show it to me!"

"Request for vidcomms, Admiral." One of the bridge crew chimes in.

You gesture for her to accept.

The Countess matches her mech. Blue dress, golden frills, clean lines, and all. Her face is pretty and youthful, but Eustace implied he was a boy during the War, so you're not entirely sure you can trust that impression. She stares at you intently, her face flushed with indignation, "I am etching your face into my memory. I will have vengeance, or I will mourn that your misguided ways led to your death. Prepare yourself, Rowark."

"ZUT ALORS, my BODY EET EEZ PREPARAAA-edddd"

I don't think I've ever seen us use our maneuver pool fully in a battle. We've got 4 free bonus points to invest on a fight to fight basis right? And 7 points on top of that on a session to session basis? I know we've used one or two points of luck before but we've never gone all out with our points before.

80s music is more our thing, not the enemy's. Regal shit would fit the Paladins more in my opinion. Once we claim her, then we get her a good song from our list.

Ya but we always play music when we fight people

I think we should continue the seduction theme with good old fashioned lover boy.

Because we always forget we have them.

It's time. Bohemian Rhapsody.

A fight without our tape playing? That's a paddlin.

No, no, Another One Bites the Dust.

Because throwing anywhere from 5-10 points in one move is going to make sure whatever hits, hits if not critical. I mean, look at what ODA did when he threw all his luck at the Green Skulls. 3 missiles to Galbadie's fat face.

You know what I agree anon just so that we can tell her we are taking her out for a Night at the Opera

"I give you one hour. Make your peace with the impotent gods of your system." She tosses her curly hair scornfully at you, golden eyes flashing as she swivels her body around to look away from you, arms crossed under her bust..

"Hmph, why did he have to be so pretty? Mon dieu, why could he not have been what I thought he was instead of the brigand most foul?" She laments.

"You're pretty fetching yourself." You remark.

"Oh no, the comms, I forgot to turn them off! Peasant! How dare you listen in on a lady's private musings!? I'm going to thrash some discipline into you!" She cuts comms with an outraged squeal.

Actually, he fired all ten and hit with every last one of them. Yamato damashii is powerful stuff and he had nakama to avenge.

Nicknames aren't a universal ace thing.
