You are Brianna la Croix, professional berater of noblewomen, and you're eavesdropping on a guy who seems like he's going to be a problem in your life.

No, /you/ deliberately stress yourself out in relaxing situations. Shut up.

"Starfall has held itself aloof from the rest of us for too long," the Count continues. "They lord their invulnerability over the rest of us and thumb their noses at the Crown. Now the new Duchess has turned Amalie's head somehow, probably bedded her -"

"Watch yourself," a woman in the group - you'd bet money on a wild countess, someone given unsettled land so as to raise them to nobility - warns, sharply. "Princess Amalie's husband isn't yet cold in the ground, Lucas, and I'll not hear you slander her. Poor decisions or otherwise."

"My apologies," Count Lucas says stiffly. "The fact remains that her judgement is clearly clouded. And ancient rights or not, this...pardon...flies in the face of the Crown's justice. King Cody must be made to see that Starfall is in rebellion against him."

"I can have a rider dispatched immediately," a third man, in sharply formal - but not noble - dress states. "My familiar is near enough for it."

Ah. A sorcerer.

> You've heard enough; tell Henrietta
> Tell Briony and see if she can't get that rider intercepted. Non-fatally.

Alright folks, I have to hit Gainful Employment. IF we are not busy, I'm gonna do the Scribbles interview via phone!

Keep in mind that while we're reaching through the fourth wall I'm gonna try to keep her as in-character as possible. She may not know things, or want to share things, or I may hold them back because /plot/.

I look forward to it.
>>
>>48555730
> Let it go. The politics of the realm aren't your business
There's already royalty here that could easily clear up any misunderstandings
>>
Is this thing - hey! There we go.

Ah. I'm Scribbles, writer by profession, lamia by birth. It's, ah, it's nice to meet you! Ask me anything, I guess. Just try to keep it classy, yeah?
>>
>>48557311
How'd you wind up writing about the dungeon?
>>
>>48557311
Hey there! I guess the first question from me will be what other monstrous types are hanging out in the Dungeon? Not that it's a BAD status, but we just heard some controversy over the Harpies, so I'd like to know what /else/ Bri is getting into.
>>
>>48557507
I told a librarian that I wanted to write. He says to me, "Write what you know." Then I realized that I didn't know shit, so I figured home was a good thing to start with. Been writing about it ever since.
>>
>>48557311
It's been a while since we last saw you!

I don't remember if you've already answered this, but where where you born? Are there other Lamia communities in the Dungeon? Amy, Nate, or Bri best waifu/husbando?
>>
>>48557311
What's it like being a waifu?
>>
>>48557311
You get into any noteworthy adventures trying to chase a story down? And how long you been writing anyway?
>>48557535
You're from the dungeon? Haven't been any other Lamias so far. From what level do you hail?
>>
>>48557516
Um. Lots? Dunno, depends on how you define it. Exiles mean we have some of everyone. Even some werewolves down in the Cornucopia. Everyone's got a home down here, want it or not.

>>48557543
Hatched down here, Mom's from Greenwall. She works in the Cornucopia

And lemme tell you, if that necromancer was single...

>>48557558
A what?
>>
>>48557917
What's the weirdest thing you've ever written about?
>>
>>48557917
You can't answer a question about best waifus and then pretend you don't know what they are in the very next sentence, girl. Have some internal consistency.
>>
>>48557578
I dunno, seven years or so? Ended up undergoing a minotaur adulthood rite once so they'd share their ways with me. Still got a brand on my lower back from that.

>>48557960
There was a ghost in the Mine that begged for orange juice. Dreamed his whole life of the stuff, got poisoned by his wife thinking it was orange juice. Dude only spoke in Limerick.
>>
>>48557992
Pfft, there's no law down here. I can do as I please.
>>
>>48558032
You ever been topside? What was your impression of it?
Got any hobbies or interests? No, writing doesn't count.
>>
>>48558032
If you don't mind me asking, How long are you, tip of tail to top of head? How high of the ground do you keep your head when 'standing'? How much do you weigh? And how much you do you eat in a day?
>>
>>48558121
Once, a long time ago. Mom made a break for it, figured she wouldn't get caught. She got caught, but the soldiers took pity on her for my sake. Seemed warm, bright, smelled nice. Sky was creepy though.

Hobbies, hobbies. I like making friends with adventurers, which gets me interesting presents and favors, like that coffee. I do crossbow shooting for sport and hunting too, that's a lot of fun. I read a lot, tell stories some.
>>
>>48558295

>>
>>48558314
What's your favorite story you've collected (or lived) in your career so far?
Meet any colorful characters in your travels?

>>48558346
Apologies, my curiosity got the better of me.
>>
>>48558314
Got any family, 'sides your mom?
Actually, are lamia single or multi birthed?
Favorite food? Hated food?
Pet peeves or general dislikes?
Any other interesting scars, tattoos, brands, etc?
>>
>>48558314
Out of all the areas of the Dungeon, which ones do you like? which do you hate? (Greenwall doesn't count unless you have a better reason than 'home'.)
>>
>>48558388
Jack the Dragonslayer, definitely. Helluva man. Miiiiight have a fan crush on him. Might.

And everyone's colorful, if you pay attention!

>>48558595
Some I've never met. Mom lost the rest of my clutch to, um. Well, the cousins. Bestial snakes. She doesn't talk much about it.

I like dog, if I'm being honest. Hate mushrooms, too earthy.

Pet peeves - you know what, people making tail sex jokes! That is for cuddly constriction damnit!

>>48558726
I hear the Athenaeum is nice. Noooot a fan of the Roost. Birds, snakes, never ends well.
>>

No, like, for real, not even in a fetishy way, we want to know about the reproductive cycle of lamia. Eggs? Birth? Single children? Clutches? Nursing?

FOR SCIENCE!
>>
>>48559185
>not even in a fetishy way
Speak for yourself.
>>
>>48559185
Um. Wow, but. Okay. Generally you'll get clutches of three to five eggs. Bad eggs sometimes happen but not often. Usually the mother does everything she can to put on weight while the eggs incubate. A mate is helpful with that, whiiiiiich is not always or even often the same idea as the eggs' father; we're, ah, we're a bit open.

Our young nurse, for about eight months or so if I'm typical. I was mom's first, you know? After that we get weaned onto a pretty human-like diet, though with a lot of eggs and milk if we can get it. Lamias cook our food.

Um. I hope that helped because I'm blushing to death.
>>
>>48558949
Harpies can use 'the bird language', despite not having beaks. Can lamia speak 'snake' parseltongue?
Actually, do you have fangs? Are you poisonous? Has that ever caused... issues? Or come in handy?
>constriction
That is both amusing and horrifying.
How strong is your tail?
How hard is it to find clothing?
>>
>>48559348
Good girl. Give yourself some head pats.
>>
>>48559380
Birds talk. I'm not sure that snakes do, but we can do a pretty good hiss. I don't have any fangs, but legends say that we used to. Story goes that a lamia princess begged Wren to take them so that she could win the love of a Hero. Not sure I believe it though, I can't imagine us running a kingdom. That'd be effort.

I make my own clothes. My tail is...I can and have killed things my own size with it.
>>
>>48559348
Harpies have the lady of Ravens, humans have Quell(?), Dwarves and elves have the Forgemaster. Who claims the lamia? Do they have a creation story/reason?
>>
>>48559506
Humans have Wren the Rhymer, buddy, which is why it seems like you can breed with anything that can talk. Big romantic, Wren. She made us too, later on. World was pretty full by then, but she'd wanted one last set of children to share it with and debate on it.

I think she fucked up with the snake thing though. We've got lovely singing voices but most of us seem totally incapable of giving a fuck. Damn shame.
>>
>>48559601
>We've got lovely singing voices
Mind giving us a few bars of your favorite song?

>seem totally incapable of giving a fuck
Do you lot hibernate? Are you cold-blooded (biologically)? or is there some other reason for the laziness?
What's the typical lamia lifespan?

You plan on settling down at some point in your life? Or have you got too much wanderlust in you?
Any particular reason the crossbow is your weapon of choice?

How are you talking to us right now?
>>
>>48559500
>I make my own clothes.
Do you buy stuff and modify it, or are you a full seamstress?
>>
>>48559601
>which is why it seems like you can breed with anything that can talk
An interesting comment, as it implies incompatibility with other races. Everyone's got the same components, and everyone works with human. That should mean everyone is cross-compatible, right? Does anyone know why that's not the case?
human + lamia = ok; human + elf = ok; lamia + elf = bad?

Apologies if this is overly nitpicky, just curious
>>
>>48559601
One thing I've always wondered, based on what I know of snake and human anatomy given the size of your snake bits it should represent a lot more than the legs and tail which they replace.

Basically I'm wondering do you have two torsos? And if so does that mean double up on organs as well? How the heck does it work are you warm or cold blooded?
>>
>>48559601

>>48559828
Gosh, um. Seamstress sounds so fancy, I just like to be self-sufficient.

>>48559781
I think we're warm-blooded if I'm getting your meaning. We definitely don't hibernate, we're just sort of... mellow, I guess. Pretty happy to just take life as it comes, you know?

I dunno about settling down. Sounds like it'd cut into my writing time. Mom wishes I'd lay some eggs but eh. I dunno about all that. She never found a new mate either.
>>
>>48559601

repeating an earlier question, any reason the crossbow is your weapon of choice?
I've heard of a book, written by Wren, that just by reading it, gives you powerful magic. It was called /Heart's Rest/, or somesuch. As a writer, I bet you'd love to take a look through it. Heck, I would as well. Are there legends of any particular artifacts or treasures down here?

>>48561101
Sorry that I missed it! Crossbows were easy to learn and then I figured out that I enjoyed them, so I practice for fun now.

There's a few legends down here. /Heart's Ease/ isn't though - I checked. It's supposed to be able to win the heart of whomever you love. Last I heard it was up in Hardhome somewhere but don't quote me, that's an old rumor. Personally, the one I always wanted to find is supposed to be in the Mire - a knife by the name of Helper. They say it's never taken a life and can do the job of any tool, if the holder knows how to use it. The half-mortal son of the Forgemaster lost it, and his life, down there.

Once again your raw newness to /tg/ shows. Read MGNQ run by Decu and realize that letting name fag run sidestories and "interviews" can be an interesting interlude/buy for time, but it can also Megatokyo a quest to death with shitty waif wars. The shit posting you've seen so far is really, really, really just a faint rumbling of the shitpocalypse that awaits over the horizon my friend.

See >>48561961 a third of the way before getting creepy is fantastic. Worse, now that you fed the waifufags they'll be back for more and shit up everything that doesn't limelight their nightstand fill-in for actually living.

Or not, if you want to end up with the burnt out BAD END unfinished shit heap that MGNQ did then sure do this more.

TL;DR Keep it rare, keep it out of the main quest, keep it for the end after the quest is over to remind people you exist while creating your next quest. These are the ideals.

What did Snapple do?
>>
>>48562820
Infamous shitposter from Blatant Fetish Quest (yes, that was the real name) who got his name by voting to snap every NPCs neck. Eventually became a tripfag and advocated insane ideas like tearing out the MC's heart under magical life support/anesthesia in order to tattoo spell focuses on it, despite the MC being the only character who was speced to do so.
>>
>>48562930
I'm kinda curious as to the working definition of 'shitpost'. Mainly so I can say 'hey don't do <working definition here>'
>>
>>48563132
Were you not here for the vote on what to do about Seraphina? Where right after we had a character defining moment where River decided she didn't just want to be good, she didn't want to be the bitter, cynical, and cruel "good" that Robert played himself up as and Brianna feared herself to be, we had an anon posting that she had to die because she hurt the enemy ghost that was poses sing one of her closest disciples and a person that she felt the closest to love for that she could? Who had already been twisted by a betrayer of her cause using the words taught to her by the most monstrous of all the angels and gods who stood above and styled themselves as arbitrary judgement mercy or justice be damned?

Clearly one of us was a shit poster and after a few posts we clearly both were and I definitely didn't samefag the hell out of that vote because Vox likes to pretend that 8 months later he doesn't understand how final destination votes or even off site surveys work if you're leaving a quest up for days.

But I digress. That? That's a shit post.

Any time you argue something after the vote, that's a shit post.

Any time you respond to someone who you have already disagreed with, that's a shit post.

Any time you come in 5 hours after a fight is over and open your fucking mouth about it and start it again, that's a shit post.

Anyone responding to this post, that's a shit post.

Any posts made by Vox that aren't story posts are pretty much guaranteed shit posts.

Any posts made by the faggot Rob are shit posts.

That's just about enough of that. You head back in the direction of Amalie and get her attention with a subtle gesture. The Princess cocks an eyebrow and follows you just to the side.

"Count Lucas seems to be under the impression that Henrietta has corrupted your mind and is in rebellion against the Crown," you murmur. You gesture in the general direction of the conspirators with your cigar. "They're sending a rider to the Crown to inform your father of these proceedings and persuade him that Starfall needs to be brought to heel."

"Fascinating," Amalie mutters. "I am /trying/ to get things /done/ here. Lucas needs a lesson taught to him, I should think. Travis?"

Cooke is /there/. You jolt. Where the hell did he come from?

"Your Highness?" the cook asks, politely.

"A rider is heading for my father's palace. Remove his horse."

"Distance?" Cooke asks.

"Sorcerer's having his familiar tell the man, so within a mile, maybe a mile and a half of here if the familiar's okay with leaving his master," you tell Cooke.

"Mm." Cooke's eyes go to Amalie. She gives him a subtle nod, and he clicks his tongue, twice.

At first you think it's his shadow getting up, but it's not. The spectral thing that pulls itself out of his shadow, staying low to the ground, burns with faint embers and smoldering smoke, and makes a low noise like sizzling sparks.

A Taster demon.

"You heard the woman," Travis says simply. The demon nods its head and streaks off, staying low to the ground, while you /stare/.

"We don't particularly care what our Royal Summoners do for hobbies," Amalie notes mildly. "Or how those they serve dispose of their talents, as long as they handle their chief duty of weeding out shapeshifters and mind-controlled plants. Mister Cooke, thank you for your service."

Travis bows and walks away, a faint swagger in his step, while Amalie tips you a grin. She turns you around and points into the dance area, where Briony is giving you a hearty wave.

Yeah. Let's. Let's go over there. Away from the thing you're not sure you wanted to know. A fucking /Taster/?

"Bri!" Briony is dressed in a clean, sharply pressed militia uniform, with her badge pinned to her hat and a raven's feather tucked into it. "This is going a lot better than I expected," she tells you. "No fights broken up, no problems. Where'd that damn guy get off to - HATCH!"

A young man you recognize by description as Michael comes up, one arm in a sling. He has an annoyed expression on his face. "Priestess?"

"Bri, this is Hatch. He's learning about wisdom," Briony tells you. "I was wondering if you'd tell him a story."

"What kind of story?" you ask, intrigued despite yourself.

"The kind of story you'd tell someone who doesn't speak force very well," she says, cryptically. "But insists on trying to use it."

>>
>>48564641
>>48564785
Oohkay, what's the deal with Tasters again?
>>
>>48564810
You know how Gorgers get bigger, hungrier, and more draining with everything they eat, consuming flesh and bone and eventually life itself as they swell with all they've stolen from the mortal realms?

Tasters are their shadowy siblings. Tasters are nearly insubstantial, like ghosts, and feast on emotions of all kinds. They drink down joy, sorrow, hope, love, lust, loss, and anything else besides, eventually leaving their victims in nightmare-wracked comas in a final effort to devour what's left of their minds.

You've been informed that the Lush keeps one as a pet.
>>

That sounds fun.
>>
>>48564785
>> "Have you ever heard the legend of the Liquid Gates of Hardhome?"
>>
>>48564798
Well, you could still use final destination votes. Especially if you leave the discussion open for eight hours, the ten minutes they take can be spared.
>>
>>48564956
I could, but for the most part samefagging hasn't really been a /problem/. There's only been one real case, and my players have otherwise been fairly honorable and courteous. Why treat folks with mistrust?
>>
>>48564826
Okay, so I imagine that serving an apparently sanctioned demonologist/bodyguard/cook allows the demon to enjoy all of those various emotions, in a controlled manner, without actually hurting anyone?

So its a win-win for both sides? I can get behind that. And y'know what? We can probably ask him later if he has any tips on dealing with the Lush and his 'pet'.

>>48564981
I think part of the reason same-fagging has been so rare is because you yourself are genuinely chill, and even if someone doesn't like the way the vote went (I myself was part of the crowd that didn't want to staple giant mantis claws onto the bone boar), your writing makes up for that.
>>
>>48564981
That's fair enough point, and it is not per se neccessary.

However, controversial/strongly discussed choices often invoke accusations of samefagging, and that usually devolves into fairly ugly conversations.

My point being, that while it obviously is not neccessary on the majority of votes, some of them could probably profit from it, if only to make the fairness obvious to readership.
Especially since it seems to me that fairness/clarity in decisions (or subjectivly apparent lack thereoff) is sometimes perceived as flaw in your style.

It's your decision, of course. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to give you one more view.
>>
>>48565108
It's appreciated, anon. And I'm strongly considering it in the future for votes I feel might end up controversial, but the trouble is I often don't /know/ until it actually happens. Like, fuck, I had no idea Amy's wings were gonna end up like that, f'rinstance.
>>
>>48565132
>but the trouble is I often don't /know/ until it actually happens
That's why advocate final destination, in contrast to offsite.
Setting up some poll for every single choice is wastefull, of course. But putting in a final destination rather than trying to tally a hundred-post-discussion shouldn't take any longer.
>>
>>48565132
Eh, Nate /did/ give up a leg for that Wraithsteel, and she's the second half of the Romance package. Of course anons were going to blow that out of proportion.

Wait, random thought. Didn't Lark end up getting shot to shit and had to have his lungs replaced with the stuff, or was he revived? If he did get them replaced, does having a magic-metal respiratory system mean he is immune to his own death-sticks?
>>
>>48565286
I'm pretty sure that he was revived.
Especially since going by the rather simple model Nate got, Lungs'll be impossible to recreate. Shit's complex.

I don't know if your pulling a god of war joke or not, but you have my attention.
>>
>>48566027
Well, if I'm remember my history classes from high school right, Kratos was a god of punishment and retribution. But he didn't punish mortals, oh no. He punished the gods themselves.

Whenever one of the gods truly fucked up or performed an incredibly evil act, he would fuck their shit up in an amount proportionate to their crime. And since the Greek gods didn't actually die, they had to go through all of it.
>>

I did.

I was wary when you had a name vote that MATTERED.

I was STILL wary when you had ANOTHER name vote that mattered now that anons give enough of a shit to be invested. People had been vocally expecting a shitstorm at this point.

Alarms bells started ringing when the harpy 2-name thing became relevant.

And the only method at hand to diffuse such a thing was to make enough suggestions that were good so that there is no "fail" state. Clearly, I did not succeed.

...I'm going to take a guess and say that the Gates are magic water you can walk through, but if you attack them or use 'force' to enter, they're harder than steel.

I only say this because in a Pathfinder campaign I helped run (not the DM, but I messed with the players a bit with the NPC's and big bads), the wizard had a tower made the same way.

You give Briony a wry look, then turn your attention to her companion. "Alright, I'll bite," you agree at last. "Michael -"

"Hatch," he corrects, sullenly.

"...Excuse me?" you ask, blinking.

"Until I win this stupid game of the priestess's, my name is Hatchling," the young man repeats. "And I /will/ win."

You give Briony a look but for once in her life the priestess could bluff down a succubus with her poker face.

"...Okay then," you say at last. You take a deep puff on your cigar and let the smoke out through your nose. "Hatch, have you ever heard the legend of the Liquid Gates of Hardhome?"

"No," he admits. "What is Hardhome?"

You stare.

"/What/?" he snaps.

You sigh. "Hardhome was the northern fringe of the Empire," you say at last. "Nestled in the mountains at the edge of forever winter. As its name implies, it's a rough place to live. Leaving aside the orcs and goblins, for at least there's the dwarves nearby to aid with /them/, Hardhome is a rocky place where the land fights back against those that work it, and whatever they earn is ripped roughly from its fingers. And it's said that in the early days of the Empire, when Hardhome joined only reluctantly and bitterly, there was a lord there with an invulnerable fortress, hidden behind impassable mountains. The only way in or out of the lord's lands were high gates, made all of burning iron that flowed and ran like water, glowing white-hot with iron's primeval hate and impervious to strike or sorcery."

You haven't told a story in /weeks/. The familiar rhythm of it is comforting, as is that interested, enraptured look in Michael's eye. You grin as he leans in to hear better, gesturing with your cigar.

"Our lord was an arrogant man, and his daughter and council were equally arrogant. Three times the Empire sent envoys to him."

You gesture to Briony. "The first envoy was the Empress's own son, known for many miles and more for his wisdom and courtesy. Ignoring the many snubbed messengers that had been turned away from the lord's lands, the Imperial Prince bade the lord a good day at the foot of the Liquid Gates and commended him for his wisdom in joining the Empire, and asked that he open his high gates so that they might celebrate his new place, his new prosperity, and his new patronage together. And from the top of the Liquid Gates, the lord laughed and said that he would have no part of the Empire while the Liquid Gates yet stood. And the Prince rode away."

Others nearby are starting to listen. Michael is completely oblivious, but you have Roosters and villagers from Glen, and even some of the young nobles, ranging from young boys and girls who'd had to stand on people's shoes to dance with them to some of Henrietta's suitors.

"The second envoy was not kind, wise, or courteous," you tell Michael. "The Empress sent a necromancer from the belly of her dungeons, a man retained to question those who rudely died before she had the pleasure of their secrets, and he came cloaked in shadows, with the sons of the Secondborn to attend to him, and demanded that the gates be opened. But the lord laughed, and bid the necromancer to try the Liquid Gates. 'No force can avail you,' the lord mocked, 'be it living or dead, angel or demon, of this world or the next, for my gates flow like the sea and burn like a falling star, and nothing and no one may touch them without being destroyed.' And the necromancer laid siege to the Liquid Gates for a season, all through the long summer, and received only scorn for his efforts."

"In the midst of this siege came the third envoy, an old woman with a bent back and her grandchildren to attend upon her, who taught kineticism to ungrateful students in a town on a river. She had come to the Empress, hearing of her troubles with Hardhome, and promised to rid her of the Liquid Gates in exchange for the marriage of her youngest daughter to the Prince. The Empress warned the old woman that if she could not deliver, her life would be forfeit, to which the sorceress laughed, and set out on her journey."

You flash a grin at a young boy and girl - brother and sister, given the matching colors and lovely golden hair - and tap the ash from your cigar before you take another puff.

"The arrogant lord and his arrogant daughter and their arrogant council came to the Liquid Gates to see this old woman who demanded to speak to them, and they laughed long and loud at her grey hair and her bent back, at her dutiful grandchildren and their fierce glares up at them. They laughed at the carts of corpses brought with them, for the old woman had told the Empress that her necromancer would need reinforcements, and in those early days of the Empire there was never a short supply of the dead made in her war machine, and laughed at the cough that shook her lungs as she straightened up to speak.

'Surrender immediately,' the old woman told them. 'Lay down your arms and beg forgiveness of your Empire, and ye may yet be spared. Ye have refused to speak wisdom and laughed ye with scorn at force, but force is the universal tongue spoke 'twixt man and nations, and I know ye know its song. If ye bid me to break your gates, there will be a slaughter such as has never been seen. Not a man or woman with blue blood will be left living, and not a stone you built will be left sitting atop another. I will break your lands and your legacy and build a town for your common people out of the bones of it, and all will say that ye lived a monster, and died an idiot'."

You grin wickedly. "And the lord, and his daughter, and his council, they laughed and quit the Liquid Gates, secure in their invulnerability. His archers laughed as the old woman moved earth and stone with her magics, creating shelters from their arrows from the edge of the Liquid Gates to the end of their bowshot, and placed bets on if the necromancer would drop dead from raising so many skeletons and zombies to waste upon their fortification."

You cough and are /immediately/ handed a glass of wine. You weren't expecting it, but you're not about to argue; you raise it gratefully to the young man that offered it, who waits impatiently while you wet your throat.

"The old woman walked off from the Liquid Gates with her grandchildren once this was done, and was not seen again for three days and three nights. When she was spotted again, it was ahead of a great trench she dug in the earth with her sorceries, smooth and sloped towards the sea. The archers laughed, but as she slipped beneath her shelters and her trench followed her, they grew uneasy. What was she planning? A messenger was dispatched to their lord, but it was far too late. The old woman dug a second trench at the foot of the Liquid Gates, as wide as they were, and joined it to her first, and cackled like a mad thing as they drained away and flowed into the sea, there to harden against the waves and be taken for scrap."

"What happened to the lord?" Michael asks, in hushed tones.

You shrug. "There was a slaughter," you answer. "Such as the world had never before seen. And behind impassable mountains, with high gates to protect it, is the town of Mort, where all the windows are made of glass, and all the stone of the finest make, and no lord or lady with blue blood has ruled for three centuries."

"Thank you, Brianna," Briony comments, as your audience starts to clap. You take your hat off and bow, and turn to look at Henrietta. The Duchess raises a questioning eyebrow.

<Fetch, are you ready?> you ask.

<In position, my lady> your familiar confirms.

You nod to Henrietta, suck a drag on your cigar, and bow to your audience. Briony claps you on the shoulder and bids you a good night as you make your excuses and move subtly towards the stage. There's no rush, precisely. Henrietta waits until you're a reasonable distance from the stage before getting the gathering's attention. It's amazing how nobles snap to the sound of a fork against a wineglass. It's like seeing merchants hear a dropped coin.

"I did warn you that there would be another announcement," Henrietta tells her assembled guests. "I brought a special guest with me tonight. Two, in point of fact."

Fuck, River. What about -

Your sister gives you a small, shy wave with her fingers from the other side of the stage and mouths 'Robert' at you. Thank the gods, the ghost didn't drop the ball.

Henrietta steps aside, permitting Sir Fetch to flap up onto the stage from the rear and strut with great dignity to the front.

"That is a chicken," one man says flatly.

"That's a /zombie/," someone else disagrees.

"I," your smallest friend begins, his voice echoing across the crowd in the spectral tones of the dead, "am Sir Fetch the Nightfeather, and it is my honor and privilege to introduce to you my creator and liege lady."

You and River begin to ascend the stage as Fetch continues. "I present to you Brianna la Croix, Saver of Heroes, Binder of Demons, who returned the Lichyard to its sacred peace, liberated the Athenaeum, and overthrew the cruel Baron of the Mine, avenger of the Broken Jaw, Heritor of the Dungeon, and last of the Blind Marsh la Croix."

Everyone stares in silence as Fetch indicates River with a wing.

"You are /under arrest/," Lady Olivia snarls, fighting her way to the front of the crowd. "This is an /outrage/, Henrietta! Have you lost your mind /entirely/?"

<This is going well> You note to Fetch as other knights and nobles in the crowd take up the call.

Feather is fine as it only targets creatures and only removes -1/-1 counters. Brianna should probably cost 4 as a 3/4 vigilance lifelink with upside should cost 4 (see Kalitas).

>>
>>48581710

>>
>>48583266
Eh, I dunno. The CMC frankly has antisynergy with most of its effects.
By the time you can drop six mana in three colors on a creature, your opponent isn't going to have too much trouble providing a second blocker, and being only 4/4 at that stage of the game, actually getting blocked would probably be fatal.
2/2 with flying is a nice bonus, but that sort of thing is worth more in the early game. Certainly not negligible, but not huge.

And lastly: it's 6CMC in three colors that tutors for creatures. Using it for one/two-drops on turn six (more likely 7 or 8) doesn't swing the board in your favor by much. Using it for fatties is a mana sink, since the tutor's expensive to get out, then you need to pay the fatty's CMC+1 to get it in hand, in tribes known for high CMCs offset by alternative casting costs, and then you still need to cast it.

Meanwhile, Rune-Scared Demon is a 6/6 Flyer for 7CMC in one color that tutors you any card you want as an ETB. Same total P/T, still gives you a Flyer, free better tutor, easier to cast, flickerable. The only thing you miss out on is Menace and repeatable tutoring without an enabler.

I just don't see a real reason to run this.
>>
>>48583901
I never said I'd run a game or that it was perfect, just that it wasn't completely ridiculous for the cost. Personally, though, I'd have made it a 4/4 with 2 +1 counters on it from robert and some shenanigans to get something cool from removing those counters.
>>
>>48583901
It's probably worth pointing out that River can tutor you up two cards at once.

<Go for it, little guy>

Fetch does something you've never heard him do before - he crows, like the rooster he wasn't in life; his voice's spectral echo lends it a disturbing authority that commands silence from the angry crowd.

"For /shame/," Fetch berates. "Do you all quake in the shadow of a humble chicken? Is my helm so fearsome as to remove your spine and corrupt your courage? You, who walked past not one but two daughters of the Secondborn on your way here and exchanged pleasantries with them? What manner of rulers do I see before me?"

Dead. Silence.

"Rightly /or/ wrongly, Her Grace has chosen to introduce her honored guests to you," Sir Fetch continues. "You know the way of hosts and guests. My lady and her sister are protected by the laws of hospitality and /even if they were not/, there is more than sufficient legal precedent for this action. I spend much time around books, my lords and ladies, and with people who love to read. Rulers and nobles of all stripes have brought criminals before their peers before, to discuss their fate, prove a point, or simply to make their guests uncomfortable. Your behavior is /outrageous/, and undignified. Duchess Henrietta has the floor."

It doesn't look like Henrietta wants the floor, though. She's staring at Fetch. The nobles are staring at Fetch. The /commoners/ are staring at Fetch.

"We just got told off by a chicken," a teenaged boy in the crowd comments into the silence. His mother puts a hand on his shoulder and nods.

"He's good at that," you mention, taking a puff on your cigar. "My sister and I will be happy to entertain your questions and accusations /after/ you let Henrietta speak her piece. Lady Olivia, if it makes you feel better I can pass you my cane. There's a sword in it."

"...You need it to stand," the knight says, uncomfortably.

"She may use mine," the old general offers. He hands it to Olivia, who looks visibly relieved. You trade with her and flash the old man a grin.

"Thank you, General Thorn," you say graciously.

Henrietta clears her throat. "Many of you have met Brianna and River tonight. Some of you may have already known them. Some time ago, Brianna was tried in Starfall for the illegal use of necromancy. Men under my father's command were under attack, and her timely intervention saved their lives, including bringing a man back to life from beyond the Veil. To express our gratitude we clapped her in irons and sentenced her to die alone in the Dungeon."

Henrietta gestures to you as she continues. "Ms. la Croix did not seek her revenge, as some might have. She, in fact, fulfilled the terms of her exile and delivered the lost crown jewels that had been secreted into the Dungeon some forty years ago."

"I can confirm that," Amalie adds, a playful grin tugging at the corner of her mouth.

"Captain Marsh of my forces pleaded her case with me. Doing his duty weighed heavily upon his conscience, especially in light of the man under his command who lives now when he would have been dead before," the Duchess tells the crowd. "I came here to Glen to meet with her, and take her measure for myself. I will admit, at first I had thought of directly legalizing the practice of necromancy. I was inflamed, incensed, at the wrong that had been done. Brianna herself actually advised against this, in a display of remarkable wisdom and restraint."

<Oh my gods why> you mutter.

<You really must learn to take a compliment> Fetch chides, gently.

"However, Starfall - indeed, all of Greenwall - does commonly face problems of a deathly nature. Our soldiers are not necessarily equipped to handle restless shades, to understand the reasons and clues found in grave robbings, or to defend themselves against the undead. In light of this, I have chosen - on a limited basis - to sanction necromancers in much the manner of our sanctioned summoners."
>>
>>48588070
The comparison does its job; the doubting looks on many faces become thoughtful as the nobility turns over the idea in their mind.

"It is my hope that this experiment will prove beneficial to my subjects and to Greenwall. I would like to turn the floor over to Brianna," Henrietta finishes, gesturing to you. You take a step forward and adjust your hat.

TFW two options won but never has there been an easier set to combine.
>>48588161
You tip your hat to the knight in the front row. "Lady Olivia, I do believe now is the time for your objections," you offer, peaceably.

"I - Ms. la Croix, I am a soldier," she protests. "I look after my lands as best I can, but the politics of the realm are not my forte."

"Yet you cared enough to speak up. Besides, I dare say a soldier's got a better idea than the rest of these blue bloods - no offense, your collective Lordships - of why this is quite possibly the worst idea in all the history of ideas." You flash Olivia a grin. "Please, it'll help open up the dialogue."

Lady Olivia hears the peace offering for what it is and takes a moment to gather her thoughts. "In my capacity as a defender of this realm, I have encountered necromancers in the past," she begins. "They are rarely stable or sane individuals. Their experiments leave the unquiet dead roaming the lands to prey upon the living, and I have known them to bind the rightfully dead as slaves or, worse, fuel. Necromantic toxins are particularly vicious and, in addition to being worryingly cruel, are only rarely responsive to antidotes. Too often, they bear a grudge which they then prosecute against the innocent, leading to senseless death and then further slaughter when the Crown's soldiers come to put them down."

You nod. "I understand your concerns," you tell her. "I /share/ those concerns. My Aunt Carol was such a necromancer, and she died seeking revenge against men who had already died. Your average necromancer gets into the art for poor reasons. Driven by grief or by anger, they reach away from life and towards death, and forget about their fellow sapients. We are not, generally speaking, nice people."

"Generally?" Lady Olivia asks.

"I'd like to think I remembered which pocket I left my human compassion in," you answer, modestly. "Not all necromancers match that description, Lady Olivia, but it is easy to be seduced by death. It falsely promises freedom from pain and sorrow. At the same time, however, there are problems a necromancer's skill set are suited to solve. Hauntings are chief among them - tell me, how bad a problem are ghosts in urban areas?"

The Duchess of Wrackholm laughs. "Ms. la Croix, I could set you up for life with the fees you'd charge to rid my city of ghosts. Hellfire, just the /annoying/ ghosts."

"My point exactly," you agree. "The very first necromancers got into the art because the dead had been ill-served by the living and craved resolution to the stories of their lives. That duty, often forgotten, is still the first and last charge of a necromancer. We speak not just to, but /for/, the dead - dead that were someone's daughter, husband, friend, enemy, lover. The dead that live on in our memories and hearts, as well as the Sunless Lands. It's easy, too, to forget that, not just for necromancers but for everyone."

You take a small puff on your cigar, and you sigh. "Retaining a few people like River and I won't resolve the problems that the living of the realm have with the dead. But we /can/ educate your soldiers. We /can/ deal with hauntings and the dead to the best of our capabilities. And we can, potentially, take necromancers whose talent would otherwise be wasted and encourage them to the public good. There's a lot I've been able to do for others with my skills. Seems a damn shame to just let them sit and rot."

You pause. At first people don't seem to get that you're waiting for them to reply, so you purposefully choke on a puff of your cigar and pat your chest to clear it. Lady Olivia gets the message, at least, not that you're surprised. Witless monster hunters make good bait.

"And who judges those necromancers? You? You would be the test case. That seems...unwise."

"It is," Brianna admits. "...There /are/ some similarities between necromancy and demonology, especially in terms of temperament and control. It's possible that the Royal Summoners, or whoever vets sanctioned summoners, could fill a similar role in judging necromancers working for the public good - but that's /an/ idea. I should imagine that Henrietta will work with her peers and the Crown moving forward."

"We should have imagined her doing that /before/ these drastic steps," Olivia points out.

You shrug. "She's young."

"/You/ are young, Ms. la Croix."

Well damn. She does have you there.

"Alright, fair," you agree at last. "I am. But I'm not inexperienced. I've learned most everything I know either from teachers who wanted me to learn respect, or the hard way. And the hard way gets pretty hard. Necromancy is not an easy art. Its sacrifices are not avoidable. Even the most unhinged necromancer learns respect for death."

"What are your current intentions?" Olivia asks.

"Go right back down into the Dungeon and finish cleaning house," you say frankly. "There's too many lives at stake down there for me to do otherwise. And when I'm done, I'd like it to be a place worth rebuilding, a place that can stand up proudly instead of thinking of itself, as the world does, as a dump for everyone's /garbage/. I've seen wonders there that I don't think I could see anywhere else. It deserves some respect."

You look at the doubting faces in the crowd and sigh. No one said this would be easy, but..hell, it's tiring.

At least no one has any torches or pitchforks this time.

"Nate and -"

"Coffee," you say softly. "Coffee, and stories. Real stories, legends, made-up stories, stories for fun, stories for learning. I love the chance to share them with people, or to hear them. It makes roads shorter, loads lighter, days brighter, and gives a warm feeling in the soul."

You shrug, thoughtfully. "And I think I like the quiet, but only when I have someone to share it with," you add.

"I've met necromancers in my time. Wrackholm's never bothered itself about such things. Our citizens tend to resolve those sorts of problems before they start," she adds. "You don't sound like someone who's lusting after death to me. That was a living girl's answer, Ms. la Croix, and I do believe I approve of it."

In the thoughtful silence that follows you can almost hear the furious social and financial calculations being made about what it might mean to disagree with Wrackholm.

"What would happen if we attacked you now?" Lady Olivia asks.

"A very regrettable number of people would die," you tell her quietly. "And I would need to ask Henrietta what words to say at your funerals."

Olivia considers this, then offers her hand up. You go to one knee and clasp it firmly. She nods, once, and lets go.

"I am willing to accept you and your sister as test cases," the knight says at last. "And, of course, her Grace is free to do as she wishes unless the Crown has some opinion on the matter."

"There's no formal law forbidding Henrietta's move," Amalie confirms. "Though I imagine, as many experienced rulers must when they find young and involved nobles at the helm, my father will be /making/ a few." She grins at the chuckle that moves through the crowd.

"The hour grows late, I think," Henrietta decides. "For those who wish to stay, there remains food and wine, and the band has had a chance to rest. For myself, I believe I'm going to retire for the evening."

"/Some/ people," Amalie gives Count Lucas a look, "will learn why they have an appointment with me at the Unlucky Bastard shortly. They'll meet me there at sunrise tomorrow or I'm going to be cross. And if you're thinking, 'she doesn't know it's me,' think again. I know."

Amy flits onto the stage next to you. "Home?" she proposes, in a soft tone.

"Home," you agree.

* * * *

A night to rest - well, not only rest - and a morning to relax in make the trip back down easier than the trip back up had been. River's new companion, Tina, is pleasant enough conversation, even if she insists on teasing River. Your poor sister's ears are going to burn off at this rate. Or Lark's going to stab the demoness, one of the two.

You can tell something is wrong once you get to the Athenaeum, though. No one seems to be there, in their proper places or otherwise. You eventually find Brigette sitting at the top of the Shaft that descends into the Mine, with a bottle of rum in one hand and another, empty, tipped on its side near her.

"Brige, where is everyone?" you ask softly.

"Down in the Roost," she slurs in her musical voice. She's been crying. "They got Jack and Silence, Bri. Killed 'em, and a whole lot of Roosters. Warehouse says Jack saved a lot of lives, but they got him all th' same. Victoria's down there, helping with the wounded."

She takes a slug from the bottle and hitches a sob. "While I sit here and do /nothing/."

Gods. /No/.

> "Who got them? Where's Natalia?"
> Take the bottle and sit with her (tell the others to go on ahead)

Whoa whoa whoa, Silence too? The fuck
>>
>>48598539
I've been reading Mourners, and sweet baby Jesus is it good. At first it felt a bit..disconnected? But then again, I'm not used to so many jumps between events. The characters are awesome and I love it.

Also I caught that little bit there.
>Loyalty is a Circle.
>>
>>48599100
No but seriously, Silence just got ganked.

The actual fuck
>>
>>48599100
>"Who got them? Where's Natalia?"
Also, maybe we should send River and Amy to the Roost while Brianna and Nate go to the Warehouse. Gotta make sure Diving Shadow and Lawrence are okay.

>>48599142
Fucking Geargrinders and their iron-tipped crossbows, probably. The Librarian definitely sent Cobalt and his forces to destroy all of Brianna's friends and allies they could find.

Rest in Peace, Ye Wandering Childe of the Mistlands.
>>
>>48599100
>go to the roost, and send someone topside to remind henrietta that the war will not stop claiming causalities
>>
>>48599201
I still find that kinda bullshit.

"Oh hey by the way silence is dead."

It pisses me off a bit
>>
>>48599167
The earlier bits were /much/ earlier. I got more confident as I moved through, but, y'know. Glad you're liking it so far!

>>48599230
She's been working in the Roost quite a bit, as you may recall.
>>
>>48599331
Uh, no? I don't recall it really being mentioned at all.

I could be wrong, but i don't recall the thought even going through Jack's head.
>>
>>48599365
It was mentioned earlier as Silence was improwing Roosts habitability and stability, also most likely starting on the excavation to surface.
>>
>>48599365
Bri last saw her there; Silence has been renovating the place, and preparing it for the dig project. Presumably she's also been hashing out trade details and the like.
>>
>>48599389
...Okay?

That doesn't really justify her getting an un-ceremonious offscreen shitting on when she's been clearly portrayed as a badass.

Maybe i just need to sleep. Or maybe she was just a jobber all along or these fucking tincans are just amazing at killing people.

Any of those
>>
As much as I hate to say this folks, I need to hit bed. I can't focus enough to write even if the thread was already dead, and it ain't. Votes remain open.

Questions, comments, discussion, feedback, and criticisms remain welcome and appreciated.

Thank you all for reading and participating!

reee you killed a character I enjoyed with no build up reee.

goodnight, have a good one
>>
>>48599398
She got pretty banged up already too, don't forget that bit.

Also sounds like they were outnumbered, badly. I am speculating on that slightly but it was implied.

We haven't even heard the details yet. Hopefully, those will be forthcoming. If they aren't to your liking and Silence's end was less than convincing, than by all means feel free to go ballistic. I'll be right there with you.
>>
>>48599398
We abandoned the roost when we played as Jack, and got him killed. Things wwould be different I assume if wwe had gone straight for the roost. She was also almost a cripple, too
>>
>>48599443
>>48599447
She had a golden arm deal iirc.

That doesn't scream cripple to me, unless there were some other obvious signs.
>>
>>48599100
> "Who got them? Where's Natalia?"
>Send someone to the surface. Amy can bring whatsherface, the chosen of Troth. We're fighting against an army now, so I think that if a chosen were to explain that we need manpower RIGHT NOW then someone ought to volunteer.
>>
>>48599100
> "Who got them? Where's Natalia?"
> Take the bottle and sit with her (tell the others to go on ahead)

Also, refresh my memory: what and where is "home" again?

Meta-Gaming thought of the day: If we don't like the fact that Silence and Jack died, we do have the option of killing ourselves and changing the outcome assuming it still sends us back far enough to make a difference when we do so. Or have I misunderstood how that particular mechanic works on some level?
>>
>>48599480
I completely forgot about this. Maybe it is time we actually use the option.
>>
>>48599464
A good deal of the rest of her was "prosthetic" gold as well. Large chunks of her torso etc. She was in a very bad way you will recall. Molten deadly metal splashed over quite a lot of her.

But I do agree: she didn't sound or act like too much of a cripple, more like a grumpy wounded warrior.
>>
>>48599480
Home for Brianna and her lovers is, well, the Dungeon. If you want to be specific, the long-house in Lakehallow that used to belong to Kells.

As for the Suicide-Reset Button, it jumps Brianna twenty four hours /forward/, not backward. And Lora already stated a while back that, after having accomplished and changed /so very much/ in the Dungeon, it might not even work now.

>>48599503
Like I said before, the Librarian did his research. He's probably been preparing his forces to gank our allies while we were away for some time. Did he know about the ball in Glen? Did he have spies in the upper floors to feed him information? Was there a double-agent in the Mine or New Hell? Lots of questions to be asked, with not so happy answers.
>>
>>48599427
Okay, I just finished reading the PDF in between early morning bullshit, and that was awesome.

You said that it was going to be an anthology, right? Because I will literally throw moneybags at you for more pretty, pretty words. Like, I have roughly $300 in my wallet right now with your name on it. In red lipstick, you sexy motherfucker you.

You mean . . . they're gone for good?

Time to play Lacrimosa on repeat for an hour.
>>
>>48599648
Unfortunately, yes. And while I /am/ slightly miffed that we weren't able to witness Silence's undoubtedly badass last stand, I am not surprised. She's a powerful Fae, a leader in the Mine, a friend of Brianna's, she was busying herself with work in the Roost, and she was still weakened after that fight with the Forge Beast. Plenty of motive and opportunity for the other Chain-Bearers who definitely had her on their 'Kill on Sight' lists.
>>
>>48599687
There's also the fact that brig can't leave the aetgenum and is telling us things she hasn't witnessed herself. Off screen deaths are rarely final so let's just wait and see
>>
>>48599856
I really hope its not true, because, y'know, I just realized; the Mine is going to feel so much more empty without Silence.

That, and there better be an army of angry Earth Elementals marching on those fuckers. YOU BASTARDS MURDERED BEST-BITCHY-FAE-FRIEND!!
>>
>>48599856
Beat me to it. This is the first we're hearing about it, there will be more details later.

...either that, or a /bitchin' powerful/ poltergeist
>>
>>48599884
Sorry to destroy your dreams of spooky faerie ghosts anon, but Fae don't have souls. They just are, and then they aren't.
>>
>>48599856
>>48599876
I'm keeping in mind that Silence said something about not being sure what happens when she dies so I'm sort of wondering if I won't have to cry after all.
>>
Well shit, guess it was time for some character deaths :/
>>
>>48599100
>> Take the bottle and sit with her (tell the others to go on ahead)
Shame I won't be back from work before this continues.

For other anons to discuss - do you think Brigette's Divine Tongue could be used to help make things? Talismans, charms, totems, the sort of thing used to defend people or areas through magic. I'm sure the Athenaeum has plenty of books on the subject, and she could get decent at it even if she can't craft with the Tongue.

It'd give her a way to help defend the people close to her, assist in the defense of other levels, and maybe hate herself a little less.
>>
>>48600018
Vox has been /very/ lenient with us. This is definitely not Game of Thrones.

Wait, would that make Brianna into Jon Snow? Nope, not even going to finish this line of thought. Fuck George Martin and his bullshit.

>>48600028
I thought that Bridgette wasn't allowed to use the Divine Tongue without Lora's permission and oversight? In case she fucks up, but more because potential for zombie armies, or some equally awful consequence.
>>
>>48598238
Smoking a pipe is an intensive effort that takes about two hours to do properly. You have to make sure it is cleaned before or after (stale pipe tobacco tastes terrible), packing the pipe is about 10-15 minutes if you want a good draw and a nice long smoke, the pipe itself will burn for an hour while you are smoking it, and then you generally have the other thing you are doing while smoking a pipe (reading, fishing, writing, etc) which takes up the remainder of the time spent while smoking.

It's not anything quick and easy unless you're a habitual smoker.
>>
>>48600228
> It's not anything quick and easy unless you're a habitual smoker.
Bri is a habitual everything.
>>
>>48600052
>I thought that Bridgette wasn't allowed to use the Divine Tongue without Lora's permission and oversight?
Yes, but that shouldn't really be a problem here. Producing amulets and the like is repetitive, self-contained, small-scale work. Since the subject of the Divine statement is a specific object, a mistake should directly affect only that object, not the surroundings.
Further, we would only really need Lora on hand at the start to give the initial instructions and make sure Bridge understands the correct process, then again at the end to vet the finished products before they're put to use.

You're using present tense, not past, when referring to Silence; That makes me moderately hopeful.

Also page 9 warning
>>
>>48599100
holy shit silence? She doesn't even get an afterlife!
>>
>>48599687
It kind of feels shitty that she's died after we invested a lot of time and energy in keeping her alive and healing her back so she'd be healthy
>>
>>48601982
Brings back the message 'no one is really safe' doesn't it.

We knew Cornucopia was going to be a disaster and a bad fight. I expected worse casualties.
>>
>>48590347
>>48601982
It was the future we picked.
>>
>>48602070
Yeah but the options we had with Jack were warn the r oost or warn the warehouse

And both jack AND silence died, even though the warehouse went on full alert
>>
>>48602220
That's because /tg/ doesn't know when to fucking run.
>>
>>48602070
This is just the beginning, anon.
Remember, we haven't even set foot in Cornucopia and we already lost two named characters.
>>
>>48602491
Jack's almost certainly coming back as a ghost.
"If you can reach the Iron Lands, you're welcome to them" and all that.
Him refusing to just drift onward and instead following flitter's voice back sounds a lot like a ghost not being able to let go.
>>

Because DAMN Brigette needs a shoulder right now.
