Recap Thread 4

You've been ignoring the sensation at the back of your neck for a while now, but it just won't go away.

It's not danger, or movement on or under the ground. Everyone knows this feeling, you're sure.
It's that crawling sensation of indeterminate guilt. You know you're in trouble, you just aren't quite sure what you've done.

And besides, you reassure yourself. You haven't done anything wrong. You're sure of that. You've been very careful, yes.
And Mom should be half a country away by now. Probably.

The river you're on is slow.
Relaxng, really. You're not sure of the destination yet, but the dungeon seems to be vaguely automatic- There's not much in the way of navigation required.

So instead, you're left to contend with your friend dramatising your life story, all while riding your back.

"With her companion fallen, she would not rest, would not tire-"
"We stopped to eat, yes. And at night."
"... Her spirit was tireless, unconquerable! She would press deep into the woods and save her follower, and naught would slow her-"

You drag your hand in the water as the raft follows the river.
She's not wrong, really. Nin just... exagerates. To a certain extreme, on occasion.

Elf Fangs do not cause headaches! They are useful tools for subduing prey, digesting food, and sedating noisy lovers!

So, when do we find the wheat-castle at the end of the dungeon with no lyra sized holes?
>>
>>48572508
Make Lyra sized holes.
>>
It's altogether kind of surreal, really.

Like- You're an adventurer. You've seen all sorts of things. Tons of things.
You saw a guy dissolve into ash, then turn back into a guy, then bite another guy.
And a dungeon where everything was upside down.

You spent a day just lying on the ground after that. Dirt never felt so good.

Anyway, the point of this- of all of this-
Is that you're an adventurer. A common adventurer. You live from job to job, you sit with your friends in the inn.
You aren't a hero out of myth, fighting the truly frightening monsters of legend, wandering into forgotten mists and so on.
Little jobs. That was your plan.

It's Lyra's fault, you decide. The moment you met the spider, everything started going backwards.

You were invited into the bloody arachne's forest. You saw the ruins and spent time in a spider's nest.
(Which is much nicer than you thought, you'll admit. It was warm and soft and gods, those blankets-)
And then you fought a Hydra. And someone was poisoned. And now you're so far into the forest that you doubt any human- or half human- has ever seen this, you just watched your friend, a giant spider girl, murder a bear the size of a tree. Several trees.

And now-

Now, in the hallowed and holy centre of the ancient woods, you're face to face with something noones even seen, who has healed a poisoned wolf and is recounting centuries old history like it was yesterday.

He is a wendigo, so you were quite pleased to learn that they don't actually eat human flesh. As it is, though-
>>
>>48571950
Most of the sheets are dated. Hoping little snake gets bigger soon.
>>
>>48572699
"-The walls stood, but it was no more. So she shattered the walls and the army alike."

It's one thing to hear legends, but it's another thing entirely to heaer it recounted as history.
Though maybe a little less, now that you know a spider.

You only spend one night there, in the end. A forest so old that you can feel it with each breath, where glowing moss keeps stone-carved history alive. You're glad to see the sun again.

___________________________________________________________________________

"-and with her companion safe and sound, she strode proudly from those dark woods, her drive renewed, her bearing regal!"
"And next isss me!"
"Yes! For the queen could not be satisfied with only the support of those around her- All the forest would know of her might, and her-"
"No, she jussst got angry at trees."

You put your head in your hands.

"A critical part of storytelling is embellishing, you know. You're supposed to make the hero look good!"
"You are a herald, though?"
"It's the same thing! And mines even more important, cause it's real people!"

I'm writing the rough draft of a planeswalker story right now. I might add it to the list once I'm through with that one, but it'd take forever to do all the worldbuilding. I'm saved that on the mtg story since I already did it for a homebrew DnD campaign my friend made the system for.
>>
>>48573285
I didn't even know there was a snake one. I've seen Re:armor, Re:Succubus, Re:Centaur, and Re:Lizard. Re:Lizard wasn't that bad, but it looked like it was heading towards a "Struggling with my sanity" plotline, so I checked out.

For a little while it competed pretty evenly with this one, but QM mismanagement and, uh, interesting decisions from QM 2.0 killed it, sadly.

Re:Armor was a flaming abortion. I honestly don't remember if Succubus was or not, so give it a whirl and see. English is a second language for most of the authors on that website. Most of the shit on there is awkward as fuck to read and their MC's emulate Wuxia novels.
>>
>>48573599
I would read Cyberpunk Re: Something. Would be cool twist to have the protag reborn into something Shadowrunny instead of Generic Fantasy Land.
>>
So, uh... When did we get on a river? This dungeon is confusing. And fractal
>>

>>
This, To The Stars, Russian Roulette, and Xander Quest are my favorite stories and have been for years. I'll be exceptionally sad if one of them dies.
>>
>>48573583
There was also Re:Kobold, started with cute awooing, take turn for grimdark and shitstorms.
Re:Harpy, quest pretty much ded before they even got out of adorable childhood phase (although it did sit there for a long time)

Re:Snake FYI was that reincarnee was basically Tomoko and kept the full insecurity as a snek. Hatching abandoned in the woods didn't help.
>>
>>48573861
We entered a portal and thus the next level at the end of the previous thread.
>>
You are presently angry, out of breath, and according to your mother, you have been arguing with a child.

A child more than a hundred times your size overall, but a child.

And the argument might have been your fault. Just a little.

But she slammed facefirst into a tree! What was she even doing? And why was it the tree that broke?

She says she's here because her friend is hurt. And now she's on her way home.
Wait. How did she get to the wendigo?

"-And skulls are not clothes, child. What would your mother say?"
"I am not- It is not clothes, yes? I have grown. I have grown twice!"

You blow up. Just a little bit.
Cause it's not fair. That's not fair. You don't just grow. It takes time. Time, time, time. If you can just grow, you'd have done it already.
Instead, you're small and angry and waiting for it, and picking fights with baby spiders who are cheating.
This isn't fair at all.

Breakfast is good though.
Food is cooked and caught for you.
Which is good, because you feel a bit awkward aabout not being able to properly help at home-

That line of thought is interrupted when the spider magics a hole in the ground, fills it with river water, and then somehow heats the entire thing to the point where it's gently steaming.

Oh gods, yes. This is amazing.

You clean yourself as the arachne and her friends bathe, and as conversation floats away from you, you start to think.
SHe said she's grown twice.
And her friends have, too.

So that means- That means that there's a secret. There has to be.
>>
>>48573950
I googled Re:Snake and didn't come up with anything besides a bunch of reddit posts. You got a link?
>>
>>48573996

It's all too easy for you to disappear once everyone's said their farewells.
Your mother doesn't even notice you vanishing. See! You could hunt if you really needed to. It isn't hard!

Getting into the boat is a little difficult.
You aren't proud of your size. But this will help-
All you have to do is follow her until you find the secret, and then-

______________________________________________________________

"Did you need to put the argument in the ssstory?"
"Of course!"
"How did you even know about the argument? You weren't there, yes!"
"Aha! You think you can keep secrets from your herald?"

"You asked my mom, didn't you?"
"Don't be ridiculous. I bribed Lilliana with healing dust."
"That- That is not any better. At all."

The fields around are growing more sparse, the river gradually widening. A few legs is all it takes to keep you close to the bank, just in case. It isn't picking up speed, though. And you can't see any rapids ahead, either. Just more river.

"Anyway. Next is the beginning of something truly large- The guild itself accepts the lady's hand, cementing her legend amongst the humans, and sending her name to the winds-"
"I built a bath, yes."

I expect it will grow in it's own in time. The Queen of 10,000 baths. And oh yeah, she's a spider too, I think.

>>
>>48574400

>>
You sit in your closet, papers all around you as you gently make your way through them, and they not so gently grind your soul down into dust.

And yes, it is a closet. Putting a desk in it does not make it an office. Offices are nice. They are for officials. They have windows, and secretaries, and drinks and comfortable chairs.

Offices are not tiny rooms in the back of a half-inn that you had to clear brooms out of before they put the desk in. They aren't tiny cages where you sit by magelight trying to process everything that goes on in the village by yourself, because your superiors are simultaneously cheap and demanding.

'Oh, we need reports weekly! It's the spider forest. It's important!'
'Of course you can do it! We can count on you!'
'Guild work? You can do that to! You were doing it already, weren't you?'

Shove it, you pompous nitwit. You'd bet his secretaries quit every week. How can anyone that dense be that rich?

You about cheered when Lann proved the existence of tiny snake people. If only so he shut up for a bit.

And now someone is knocking.

It's a break from the drudgery, at least.

"Lann? You filled out for the month, didn't you? I didn't think I'd see you up before sundown?"

The ranger takes a seat, and gestures to the door as she expands on her reasons for being up on her week off.
Spiders.

Just one really, though she's one of six. Theresa is all but frothing at the mouth, what with the family visiting so often.
You'll admit you can see the reason- in just these few months alone, the beer in the guild hall has gotten at least twice as good. The town is a little more rich now, and it's showing.
>>
>>48574595
well, I know for sure the guild at least talks about it, since reports of our baths are spread before we are
>>
>>48574894

And now it's your turn, apparently.
She wants to register for the guild.

The next few weeks are something of a blur, and not just the regular overworking kind.

The kind where there's a spider in the guild hall most days, and then there's a heated bath fed by underground springs, with carvings everywhere. And a house that springs up overnight, built of stone, to house another, different spider who plans on living in town.

On the plus side, heated baths.
And you're the officer. Which means you don't need to pay, and you can visit every single day, and just relax.
The paperwork is almost worth it it.

Omake Theater: Meanwhile with the spider god.

Fate walked across the sea of eternity, stepping lightly on the web with a frown.

[Spider?]

[Hmm? Oh hello Fate, whats brought you out today?]

[You need to have a meeting with your fellow gods sometime this week. A few could use a personal touch.]

[Do I now?]

[If you want your little Spiderling visitor to survive you do. Ruler is sulking becaues she keeps refusing to become a queen. He was a big fan of the last one. Several other gods are arguing over who can give her a blessing next, because they've been missing out. Bears is about to have a fit.]

[The god of Bears?] spider questioned.

[Yes.] Fate nodded, [He says he's going to give all his children a fear of spicers to hopefully keep them from going extinct, but Lion and Tiger are pressuring him not to in case your spider develops a taste for them too.]

[Oh my.] the spider looked chagrined.

[Yes, so why i Can't actually guide you to do so. I'm reccomending it, she's allready causing all sorts of knots that i'm having to untangle in the south. Ever since she untangled herself in fact...]

[Spiders don't get caught up in webs. Yes?] That would be sillly. Sillier than Moths. And nothing should be siller than moths.

Fate glared.

[I'd be happy to offer a hand if you'd like] spider chittered helpfully.

Fate glared harder.

[No thank you.] Fate said, before slipping through a convient plot-hole in reality that patched itself in her passing.

[What a nice lady. Well, i suppose I better go keep an eye on the little spiders, yes.] And moved across the string of destiny to weave words to sort out tempers. If only everyone had the common sense of spiders.

truth
>>
In other news, non diversification of our diet is slowly giving us something horrible like spider gout.
>>
It wasn't supposed to be like this!

Wrong, wrong-

You swing upwards, tearing a strip of flesh from a harpy that was a few seconds too slow, though it soars away again into the dark above.

The humans little wooden hole- small and weak and open- Is already encased in stone and fire, people shouting and fighting atop the wall, wolves howling and harpies screeching into the night.

You were supposed to take it. The land, everything. All at once. It would be yours and yours alone.

You crossed the river for this.

You broke pact.

There wasn't supposed to be a spider here.

More of your pack are sent flying as the arachne charges through, screaming out insults and challenges.
She's looking for you, you know.

You howl commands to your pack. Stop the arachne. Hold her back.
And they obey, as they always do. As instincts and years have taught them. They flood over her, trying to drown her beneath them, and she wades through the, casting them aside, harpies tearing them from her back as she fights forwards.

As she finds you.

There wasn't supposed to be a spider here.

You charge her, as she charges you. As the white wolf at her side charges the pack mates fighting with you.
And she meets you, fists pummeling at your skull, rattling your brain, and you grab her leg in your mouth, twisting and biting as she stabs you, throwing you off and away.

You take distance, pulling in a breath-

And she's there, as fast as you, faster than you, smashing you back and away, and you fight, biting and clawing and shifting, each form an advantage- you hit her wounds, what your pack could leave on her flesh, and you can see the pain on her face in the split-second before it moves, her head slamming into yours, leaving you dazed and staggering-
>>
>>48575944

She moves again, and you shift midair, jaws closing where she was moments before, and her arms are wrapping around your neck-
You make yourself bigger, smaller, scratching and clawing as she squeezes, as her hands burn, and you grow larger, willing all your strength to-

And something snaps and sounds grow quiet, and the lights seem farther away as you fall.

It should have been yours.

There shouldn't have been a spider here.

___________________________________________________________________________

"-And even as they broke pact, she stood tall, to defend the town, the people. With wall, with fire, with spear and strength."
"I was asssleep."
"Well, it was probably for the best. It wasn't a very good night."

The river has fed into a lake, which is a decent enough distraction from dwelling on a war. The island at the centre seems perfectly round- the lake is the same, banks equidistant from each other.

This your stop, you guess.

"But our queen is kind, gracious and forgiving! SHe took the oathbreakers under her wings, and gave them a new home, a purpose! Even now they guard the very city they once posed to attack!"
"And then-"
"Mhm. And then, with so much done, and such deeds behind her, the Queen strode from the village, and into the greater world, where her name would echo with each step-"

"And Lann grew fangs."
"Eh. Well, yes, but we won't tell people that."
"Why?"
"What if Lyra has perverts following her around because they want fangs? Or if people won't follow her because they don't want fangs? It's best if that part just stays history, yes."

"What kind of people don't want fangs?"
"I don't have fangs."
"It must be very sad."
"I eat plants."
"I bet you could eat them better with fangs."

The raft has beached itself. That's it, then?

And for people wondering:
Nin is telling the story to the other characters, and you get to see these viewpoints. She isn't telling the viewpoints. That'd be some seriously arcane nonsense.

The only way I'd want Nin is if her perspective would explicitly confirm she has a crush on us.
>>
>>48575999
I think it was more artistic license by Nin.

But I guess if she would have told it the wolf PoV would have had more emphasis on how queenly Lyra looks and how the light of the fires shines from her sweat covered abs.

You didn't really understand what I was trying to do there, did you?

Replace man with elf in the line there. That was kind of the point I was trying to make.
>>
man, poor alpha wolf.
Also, it really should have run away.
>>
You've realized something.
Several somethings, actually, but you can examine them one by one.

The first-

The world is a very, very large place. And you have only seen a tiny, miniscule corner of it.
And while you knew that- from books and stories and everything else- You didn't actually know it.

And now- In the midst of a group of people from all over, with different looks and languages and accents and food and clothes and everything-
It's starting to hit you.

It's so big. There's so many things you haven't seen, so much that you'll never be bored. Not that that was ever in any doubt with Lyra around.

Of course, you're bored right now. But that's because you're doing menial work around the caravan to help out.

It's not all boring. You help people heal, you've learned a bit about what you gained when you grew- aside from your gorgeous golden patterns and beautiful wings.

Jin grew again. Sheszka got hurt, then grew again.
You know that Nialla likes to complain that Lyra attracts trouble, but the wolf is definitely jinxed. Or cursed. You haven't decided which, yet.

And now, Lyra's grown.

And she's as beautiful as ever.
And she has a crown.

Made of fire, mind you. But still. She's taking the Queen thing even more seriously than you are. You thought it'd be years before you got her to wear a circlet. Maybe a tiara. One of those ones from the book, with the drooping chains. Between her eyes, maybe? That'd look nice. And one of Elle's dresses, the fancy ones. What goes well with red? Black for sure, and it matches her hair, but you're fond of white all the same.
>>
>>48577011
Ah!

You could just extend the dress over her shell. And some stockings again, gloves too- The embarassed expression last time was-

___________________________________________________________________________

"Yes. And then, her strength shown for all to see on her very brow, she entered the city!"
"And then?"
"And then all of this happened! The lord himself taking note of her, the human delegation, the crown and shaking the earth- And now she walks beneath the ground, deep in a dungeon, gods themselves laying traps that cannot stop her!"

"I don't think we're underground, yes."
"Well, wherever. We're not in the city."
"That's true."

There's another altar up ahead, a simple block of stone with sickle lying upon it. An old man lifts it up to the sunlight, turning it and watching the rays dance off it's razor edge.

"Welcome."

"Hello, yes."
You watch him carefully.
"I don't suppose you are an adventurer?"

He laughs, and the fields rustle with the sound of it.
"No, no. I preside over this level, little spider."

"And you are notgoing to just let us through, are you?"

"Nothing in life comes easily. Not happiness, nor health. Not freedom, nor wealth. Not even food. Haven't even you fought and bled for the ones around you?"
"How do you know that?"
"Because the gods are greatly fond of watching stories unfold. And I am privileged enough to work for one."

"Now little one, show me where your story will take you."

And I'm afraid I'll be ending it there tonight!
I've got a headache that won't quit, and my writing is suffering. My apologies!

I'll stick around and answer any questions or the like for a while.

As for the next thread, keep an eye on twitter. The weekend coming up is busy, so we'll see about midweek.

Don't be ridiculous. Everyone knows old men are wizards. Its a rule. Unless you're playing dark souls, in which case old men are kings or giants or something else.

We better get the sickle as loot for this fight.
>>
>>48578871
Damn straight. I bet it's symbolic and it cuts down enemies like a regular would wheat.

Probably wouldn't be available to people that burned the other level.
>>
>>48575321
What we're reading =/= What Nin is telling. We are getting different perspectives via omniscient narrator privilege; while delegating Nin's actual storytelling to offscreen.
