Skipping between tiers is easy for all of you, and within minutes you’re near ground level. What greets you, however, is not a team of genin, as you expected.

Choji seems to be wrestling some sort of giant serpent! Through sheer strength alone, he’s holding the snake’s jaws agape- at his feet, you can see Ino, unconscious. Shikamaru is nowhere to be seen.

“Hinata! Watch our backs!- Nori, let’s go!” you shout, taking off towards the giant reptile.

Nori keeps pace with you- the glow of her chakra chains visible in your peripheral vision.

The great snake’s eyes shift slightly as you approach- but Choji, for his credit, holds the beast in place.

Nori bounds off to the left, while you take the right side. It’s single large bulges as it follows your movements- In response, you fire off a few kunai in rapid succession. Two hit their mark- burying themselves in the creature’s left eye. Nori must have done something similar- the creature roars in pain- rearing it’s head backwards, launching Choji into the air.

You can see Nori’s glowing chain extending as the creature rears back. There’s a flash of yellow as Nori takes off- Shunshin?

All you’re able to see is the glowing chains winding themselves around the creature’s head- pinning it to a nearby tree. Nori, using her body as an anchor, is wrapped around a thick branch, holding the creature in place.

“Princess! Kill it! Finish it off!” your blonde teammate shouts from above you.

You can see the snake’s softer underbelly presenting itself as a target- how will you proceed?

You knead fire chakra within your stomach- what’s needed here is a continuous flame to roast that snake alive!

You shift through the signs at lightning speed-

“Fire Release: Fire Dragon Bullet!”

You expel your flaming breath along the creature’s underside- slowly cooking it alive.

It’s been awhile since you’ve used this technique- it’s one of the first you learned. The stream of flame is larger and roars with more ferocity than it ever has before- a result of your continuous training, no doubt!

The snake twists and turns, but cannot escape Nori’s chains- it’s slow death guaranteed. After several more minutes, the charred beast goes limp.

Nori dispels her chains, and the creature crumples to the ground.

You waste no time- you need to know what happened to Shikamaru. As if on queue, Choji stumbles back into the area, dirty, but otherwise unharmed.

“The other team is coming, Tsuki-hime! Their signatures are coming close to the ground floor!” Hinata reports.

You won’t make the first move- but you aren’t going to let them take control, either.

First, Shadow Clones. You concentrate, and conjure two of the substantial clones.

You’ve been practicing, and now it’s time to put that practice to use. Nodding at you, the two clones run to the underbrush- while you pepper the door with kunai with delayed-blast explosive tags. Nori, not really one for ambush tactics, grips her chains tightly, while Choji is breathing deeply- obvious preparing for some sort of technique.
The door begins to open- you yank on the connecting wire for the explosive tags- igniting them all at once- maybe you’ll get lucky and the explosion will take them out?

With an earsplitting series of booms, the tags detonate, splintering and destroys the wooden door in it’s entirety.

However, instead of charred shinobi, all that pours of the door is a thick fog- tinted a light shade of blue. It continues to spill out, suffusing the whole area in a matter of seconds.

Not natural, then.

Three blurs run forth from the door, obscured by the fog.

Nori isn’t patient enough to let the enemy shinobi’s cover stand, though.

“Wind Release: Gale Palm!”

The huge gust of wind takes most of the fog with it- revealing an empty courtyard.

The air behind displaces slightly- and you smile. They took the bait.

In that split second, you utilize your Shunshin.

The afterimage you left was just convincing enough- the Shinobi who was behind you commits to hit attack- and your shadow clones rush from the underbrush, just as planned.

He seems caught off guard, and raises his defense- but your clones freight to the side, to engage the other two shinobi now fighting Nori and Choji.

You won’t let this opening go to waste, though.

The versatility of this technique cannot be overstated.

That's a bad idea. We are skilled but we really shouldn't be risking ourselves needlessly once we have what we need to finish here. How likely are we to run into the sound ninja? You give him a swift kick to the shoulder, rolling him onto his side. In a fluid movement, you pull your blades out of him, and chain it into an overhead stroke of one of the blades, catching the Ame shinobi in the neck. He sputters, his breathing labored through his rebreather.

With the numbers uneven, the battle ends quickly, and in similar fashion.

You wipe off your blades and sheath them- Choji’s breathing hard, and Nori is poking around at the corpses.

As the glow from the egg fades, you sense a bit of doubt within your teammate- but it’s not anything you need to worry about, for now.

“We’ll go find Hinata. She should have found Shikamaru by now. Choji, can you still carry Ino?” you ask.

Once Ino’s in his care, the three of you take off in the direction Hinata went. As you run along, you can see little markings here and there- after the third one, it’s clear these are markings left by Hinata for you to follow- she thought this through. You can’t help but smile- the girl’s come a long way over these last six months.

Your squad follows the markings further into the forest- before coming into a clearing. Mentally referencing the map, you should be somewhere near “The Bridge”, but it’s hard to say.

“Princess, do you smell that?” Nori says, her nose crinkled up.

You can’t say you do- but you suppose Nori’s sense of smell is better than yours.

Choji is sniffing as well-

“Yeah, it kinda smells like blood. Coming from….”

“The far side of the clearing.” Nori finishes.

The three of you rush across it- and you see it. “The Bridge.”

A great snake has wound its way across the supports of the bridge- but it isn’t moving, and is full of holes. Blood is dripping into the water below the bridge, dying it red.

“That’s the source of the smell, then.” you muse.

Looking around, you don’t immediately see Hinata or Shikamaru- but this bridge seems somewhat familiar. Not that you’ve ever been to this training ground, but maybe it’s a replica of a different place?

“Kannabi. This is Kannabi Bridge. Dad’s told me the story a thousand times.” Nori says, peering over the replica.

If we roll a 100, can we discover a second Sensei hidden in the shadow of the first? Or do we have to throw Ebisu's corpse at someone in order for that to work?

“I doubt it. I don’t think these two fought Shikamaru and Hinata anyway- the bodies are cold.” you report, finishing your investigation.

“Princess, let’s cross. I have a feeling we’ll find out what we want to know on the other side. Shikamaru and Hinata were here, right? There must be a reason they didn’t come back after the snake was dead.” Nori says, her brow furrowed in thought.

You glance around, and sure enough Hinata’s markings are present on one of stones of the bridge.

“Very well.” you respond, taking a deep breath. For some reason, you’re feeling more on edge now that at any point during the past day.

The three of you cross the replica of Kannabi bridge, Ino in tow. Hinata’s markings continue- you hope she’s alright.

When you reach the end, your ears prick up- voices. People are talking?

You motion for your teammates to follow, finger over your lips.

The three of creep ever closer- eventually Choji waves you forward. Heither he’s worried or doesn’t think he can remain as quiet while carrying Ino. Either way, you motion for him to stay put, and you and Nori keep going, until the voices become clearer.

“You’ve tried so hard, scurrying about so furiously, little mice. It’s been…. entertaining.”

The voice is smooth, like silk. You have to strain your ears just to make out what he says- you and Nori continue to creep closer…. and closer.

“Although… your futile struggles are beginning to bore me. Especially yours, young man. You will never outrun your fate.” The words he’s saying don’t match his tone- the lightness of it gives you goosebumps.

Finally, you creep close enough to peer into the clearing where this is unfolding.

Four people are arranged against one- and these are people you know.

Shikamaru, Hinata, Neji and Sai are arranged in a semi-circle around the man- though only Neji is standing.

He’s breathing heavily, and his arms hang limp at his sides.

“Oho, but you young shinobi are just so full of surprises~” the man opposite them says.

At least, you think it’s a man. An androgynous figure, dressed in light clothing with a purple sash, equipped with a Kusagakure headband.

He’s also looking directly at you- it’s that same look the Sound Jonin had.

“It’s getting very crowded, suddenly. You should come out, Tsuki Norihime~”
