Last time, you hung out around your new lodgings for a morning, spoke to your faerie companion about defensive spells and thought about arming yourself. You decided to try to contact a legitimate wizard, one of the Circle, to get a protective amulet, and chose to meet with one Wizard Jacovitz. A bumbling, middle-aged man by appearance, he nonetheless managed to suckerpunch Gwynn with a binding, though you managed to convince him to make you an amulet nonetheless. You learned a little of your companion, and you made some in-roads with the benignly mad wizard, but then you heard Gwynn shout a warning to you through the locked and warded door. That is where you hung off the cliff of the end of Urban Warlock Quest III, and so it concluded.

Let's get right back into it, shall we? We should be back on to a weekly schedule for the foreseeable future.

'It is coming. We need to get out of here. Right now, Mark.'

You rush to the door, but Jacovitz grabs your hand.

'Dude, remember what I said. Home wards are unbeatable. It is tracking Gwynn if it is coming. You'll be safe in here. Please, dude, stay.'

You do not feel the tell-tale throbbing pressure that the Crimson King seems to exude with its very presence. Then again, you are now wearing an amulet meant to protect you against such things. Gwynn seems genuinely worried, but you're certain she is better at acting than you are at catching people out at their lies. Jacovitz, for his part, seems more trustworthy, but hell, you've only known the guy for a couple of hours.
>>
>>48936123
>'If your wards are as good as you say, I'll stay for a few minutes to ask some questions, but then I'm gone.'

I can't stay What if the Crimson King comes looking for me after it finishes Gwynn off? That just means I'm on my own.

or Let's say I stay. Then what? I can't stay here for the rest of my life can I?

don't write me off yet. I'll be back with your money!

So glad I could finally catch up. I'm glad you are running again Dead
>>
'Sorry, man, but like it or not we're a team,'
'Figured you'd say that. Don't die or go insane, alright?'
'Couldn't you let her...'
'Dude, if you knew half of the shit I've heard she might have done, you wouldn't want to be near her either.'
'Fine. Thanks anyways,'
'Hey, cool, be in touch. So long as you're still sane, I mean.'

With that, you rush towards the door, and it opens easily. Maybe there is no reason to lock a door if you can keep it closed with magic, or maybe it just didn't occur to your host to do so.

And, with a 'Thanks, Jacovitz,' you are out. 'Hey, call me Rick,' is the last you hear of the wizard before the door slams shut.

You see Gwynn right outside the door, waiting leaning against the wall. Either the slight panic in her voice really was an act, or she has calmed down.

'Did you get some protection, child?'
'Yes. Shouldn't you be safe from this kind of thing?'
'I should. But what I said is true- while I might have some natural protections, I do not truly understand the magics involved. There could be a, what's the word, loop-hole,'
'So wait,-'
'Less talking, more getting the hell out of here, my Mark,'

You can hardly argue with that.

You rush outside, down the stairs, onto the small street outside the apartment complex, and you hear the screech of rubber on road, as an European sedan- an European sedan you have seen completely destroyed- is rushing at you full speed.

You just stare at it as it is rushing towards you, directly at you. A single thought goes through your head again and again, 'I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die.'

Gwynn slaps you, and the force of the blow is a whip-crack, but as your eyes start tearing up, you start running. You run in an opening between two buildings, barely an alleyway, as the car screeches to a halt right where you were mere seconds ago. Gwynn is already some thirty feet ahead of you, she covers her face with her hand, whispers a word and simply disappears.

You know, intellectually, that you are not alone, but with no sight nor sign of your only ally you sure as hell feel like it.

From behind you, you hear a voice, deep and strangely if only slightly modulated.

'Coward! Warlock! Face justice!' the voice of Crowley shouts.

You run. You run like hell. The guy could throw fireballs before the crazy god healed him, or resurrected him, or what the fuck ever. You doubt he's still as fuzzy as he was a couple of days ago.

So you run like hell, hoping that Gwynn would not let her asset get murdered by a crazy wizard.

'Did the traitor Jacovitz teach you how to elude the justice of the Circle? Have you gone in with fouler demons yet to evade me? Stop and face justice, and it shall be swift!'

You just know that the fire-ball is coming, and you do not rely on your faerie to block it for you, instead you dodge hard to the left. The garbage container to your right explodes, and you are covered with hot refuse, but unharmed.

>'Jacovitz kicked me out, didn't even talk to me!'

'Hey, Leigh, how's it feel to be a warlock yourself?' you shout out behind you.
Your answer is a wordless shout, as he finally turns his car into the alley. He can get in, barely- curse tiny European cars- and is speeding up towards you.

But the maneuvering, the debris in the alley and his rage are all slowing him enough for you to dodge behind some access stairs- hopefully before he notices you doing so.

Leigh is still speeding, and shouting incoherently, and you prepare a spell. You've not really used the magic this way before, but a little sleight of hand you think it can be done. You pick up a bundle of old clothes and bags- some poor wretches sleeping place you suspect- and you throw it in the way of the oncoming car, and just as you do, you cast an illusion to make it look like a small animal splattering against Leigh's windshield. In a moment of insight, you make sure to conjure the sounds of splatter and squeal as well.

Out of sheer instinct, the wizard hits the breaks, loses control and hits the wall opposite to you.

It will take even him a minute to get his bearing together.

Your life of crime has taught you much, but more than anything it has taught you when it is time to make yourself like a tree. And get the fuck out of here.

You sprint, harder than you have sprinted in what feels like years, until you hit a main street. Looking over your shoulder you hail down a cab, and it stops just before you see the figure of a stumbling, large man a few blocks behind you.

You jump in and just tell the driver to go go go.

You sigh a breath of relief, and then you jump, as you hear in your head 'Well done, child.'
'What the fuck?' You whisper.
'Oh, shush, I can hardly turn visible now,'
'Why did you not help me,' you whisper as quietly as you can, still getting a strange look from your driver.
'Why ever would I have?'

'So, eh, boss, where to?' the driver says.

'Gwynn, can you make sure no one hears us?' you say, but the dealer answers before Gwynn can.

'Sir, all of our guests have the right to absolute enchanted privacy upon request. Shall I arrange it?' he says.
'Sure, thanks,' you say, and all the sounds of the bustling gaming room disappear into absolute silence in an instant.

'Gwynn, do you trust any of those people for Ash's job?'
Gwynn laughs, 'Child, I do not trust anyone and neither should you.'
'Yeah. That's why I said if you trust anyone here for the job.'
Gwynn sighs, 'Well. Many here would not betray you out of hand, if you paid well. Perhaps you would not have their true loyalty, but they would do the job, provided nothing went too wrong,'
'So, who, specifically?'
'Since you asked about trust, though I loathe to do it I feel I must start with the Chaos Vikings. They have twisted the old faith, and care for nothing but ensuring they die in fabulous battle, but they can be trusted absolutely to cause mayhem and destruction they are paid for.

There are other warlocks here, some as green as you. Those bound to demons and mad gods cannot be trusted, but certain entities can be trusted to an extent.

And then you have witches, and you have wizards that have lost favor with the Circle. Both can be trusted as much as any human.

Your luck is not spectacular, but you make a little money. You resort to painstakingly and cautiously counting cards, but talking to Gwynn slows you down, and you make less than $100 over the hour you spend here.

'I have been thinking I should arm myself,'
'That much is obvious child. You have been running around like toothless prey so far,'
'Right. Is there anything that might work against the King? Or just work well against magical folks?'
'Most mages are merely human, their powers aside. Any human weapon will harm them. As for something like the Crimson King, it may be that no weapon made by men can harm it,'
'Anything that's not made by men you've got in mind?'
'My people do so love the sword. There are several enchanted blades scattered around the world, often gathered by my court. If we were to go to court you might have the chance to acquire one,' Gwynn says, pauses and scowls, 'And of course, on this continent, newer weapons have been created. Handguns of legend. Most of them are inferior in most ways to a modern fire-arm, except for a single unique property, and the fact that they will all harm supernatural creatures.'

'You mentioned Chaos Vikings. Anything you can tell me about them?'
'Not much to say. They are mad, good fighters, and little more than a gang of thugs. They do seem to have some divine power and protection, and most certainly true berzerkers are among their ranks. But they crave violence. And their fashion sense...' Gwynn says and shudders. Indeed, you have seen these people, and while most of them carry impressive melee weapons, they also tend to wear tight leather, dyed in absurd colors, faux furs, and helmets more at home in a costume shop than battlefield.

'And witches?'

'Ah, the original maleficarum. The term was not always gender specific, you know. That said, most of them are women. Their magic is strange to me, if somewhat curiously familiar. Curses, divinations, small bits of voodoo in some cases. [cont.]
>>
>>48937896
What they all have in common, is that their magic takes time to set up and that it is subtle. Their spells will not have the sheer power after a night of preparation that a wizard's might have in a spontaneous evocation, but witches have collapsed Empires, laid old families to ruin, and tricked demons on more occasions than I care to recount.

'So, about these magical guns,' you say.
Gwynn rolls her eyes, 'Americans,' she says.
'What is wrong with a gun?'
'Oh, you might as well wait for the enemy to die. You do not see the suffering in their eyes, you do not smell their blood, you cannot feel the vibrations on their throat as they scream their last. What is the point?'
'None the less. Do you know anything about them?'
'Not as much as Ash, or as any local faerie. But they tend to change owners through violence- certainly I haven't heard of one being sold or bought. If you do find one on the market, they shall cost a hundred times more than what wealth we have.'
'But what do they do?'
'It depends. Each one is unique, that is sort of the point as I understand it. Hand-crafted by the Devil, or some demon, or a wizard with a good sense of advertising. There are legends of ones that are sure to kill absolutely any creature their bullets so much as scratch, but it is more common to find ones that will all but disappear when concealed, ones that always strike your greatest enemy, ones that will make no sound when fired- relatively mundane enchantments, if extremely useful.'

'And the swords?'
'It is a similar concept, but there is much more variety in execution. There has simply been more time to craft them, and there are tens of thousands of magical swords in the world.'

'Oh, what the hell. When you put it like that, I can do a grand.'
'Nine hundred.'
'Fuck it, whatever, nine hundred it is. Order a vegan extra pineapple pizza from Counterfeit Mario's for when and where you need it, get me the money next time I see you, get it?'
'Got it.'
'Good-bye, Mark, we'll be working together, yeah?'
'Sure, good-bye, sir.'

You hang up. The handgun is a vending-machine kind of fare, but the flashbangs you can do something with. You decide to keep off the order for now, reasoning that you won't need it in the Elvii, but you make sure to find the number and the address for the pizza place. Yelp rates it at 2 stars.

as in a fairy deal

we could get someone who gamled away something important. Then give him an item that would take the form of the gambled away item, except at a very unconvinced moment it would become the opposite.

or we could find someone who gambled away almost all his clothes away, and then buy what's left on him for some fairy gold.
You know the gold that disappears after a little while

You have been busy these past few days, and while you haven't completely ignored your new business, you haven't made all that many deals on Gwynn's behalf.

'So, about those deals, how exactly do I go about setting them up?' you say
'I fail to see your meaning,' Gwynn says
'I mean, where do I start, how do I find someone that I could deal with?'
'Child, everyone wants something. Everyone in the world is desperate to have at least one thing, desperate enough to make any deal,'
'So, what, I just walk up to someone and go 'Do you have problems? I have a faerie pact. Solution to all of you worries, for the small small price of your eternal servitude?'
'Of course not, child, but if you do not understand the complexities of human desire, you are of no value to me,'
'No hints?'
'Desperate people will give more for less. But you knew that already,'
'True enough. Should I just try to find someone here?'
'Dangerous. But, no risk no reward, I suppose.'

A Fairy deal would be for them to have to spend their time dressing up and seducing people, maybe. Or having to burn other people unless they want their own burns to reappear.
>>
>>48939501
>having to burn other people unless they want their own burns to reappear.

wow, that does sound pretty fairy
>>
We should stick with lower level deals for now since we can't get higher magic without the lower.
>>
>>48939473
Yes. And then we offer the deal to take their pain away. But let us stick to the easier deals for now.
>>
Well, you've got to work your way up. No point in doing life and/or death deals, when the most you're gonna get is a spell of moderate power. The Strip seems to be the ideal place for mundane despair, for people who think their troubles are overwhelming when they are little more than temporary inconveniences in truth.

And, hey, you don't even want to know what a mother would give up so that her cancer ridden child might live. Not yet.

So you leave the Elvii, and start walking towards the strip.

You get the feeling that you're being watched. It is not a magical sense. You know the feeling and you've had it many a time before, and it has always been a sure sign that you should abandon your current job.

This time around it is the least of your worries. Hell, you'll deal with it when you get to it. You walk down the road and your feeling of paranoia dissipates.

You sit on a bench and take a good long look at the people gathered around. It is now early evening, and the city is really starting to get into gear. The restaurants are of no interest to you. People with really fucked up lives don't eat out on strip restaurants. Or maybe they do, depending on the point of view, but they're not the kind of fucked up that'd be willing to make a deal with someone like you.

So you focus on people getting escorted out of bars and casinos. There are young drunks, probably getting kicked out for being disorderly. You might be able to trick them into some sort of a deal, but you don't really want to deal with them. There are some vagrants and bums being escorted by or avoiding police. You know those people, way too suspicious to take a deal out of nowhere.

You keep waiting. And some more valid targets begin to appear. There is a man in a tailored suit, crying on the phone, clearly begging to a woman. An old woman walks out of a casino, simply dressed, clearly a little drunk and barely containing her emotions. A young man, sitting on a bench with his head in his hands, glancing much too frequently at a drug dealer in a side-street. And finally, you hear a scream from another street, and see a wealthy looking man leaving an escort that is clutching her face, as a little blood drips from her nose.

Vengeance was never your bag. You have seen way too many people ruined by it. That said, you can see how it might be terribly important to a person, providing that they have been sufficiently embarrassed.

And the high-class escort that was just slapped to the floor by her client seems to be just the sort of person that would normally seethe in impotent rage, held back by their reason, but wishing death and devastation to the target of their fury.

And, hey, whatever she asks for, the dude kind of has it coming, as far as you're concerned. Win win win.

You stand up, make sure you look as presentable as possible, and that Gwynn is a few paces out of immediate sight, you approach the woman sitting on the pavement, staring daggers in the direction of the departing man.

'It's really assholes all the way down, isn't it?' you say, holding out your hand. The woman grabs it in a surprisingly firm grip, by the forearm and stands up.

'I'm used to it. You do not need to worry about it,'
'Looks pretty fucked up to me. You sure you don't want to call the police?'
'Wha-? Oh, uh, no, no thanks, I'm sure the bastard's gone by now.'
'None the less, he sure has one thing coming,'

Hmm would making him impotent for the rest of his life be enough?
>>
>>48940717
How much is within our power to give?

Could we go with something like 'vengeance against each man who claims he loves you, and against those who do not even pretend that much?' or would that bind us to hunting them down ourselves?

If we could get that one, I don't think we would even need much of a 'price', just wait until some idiot actually does fall in love with her and she with him.
>>
>>48940717
Let's see; it should be a 1st level deal: having the sort of poetic injustice that the fae appreciate, but are not openly deceptive, do not require death or slavery, and they are unlikely to change the life of one of the parties for more than a year.

Look, you had to think fast, and it's fucking impossible to get him out of your head living in the Elvii.

The woman starts laughing, but then the gravity of what just happened strikes her. She speaks in a whisper.

'Wait, what the fuck are you,'
'That is irrelevant, but I'd like to offer you a deal, doll,'
'Yeah, I get that. What do you want in return?'
'Oh, nothing much. You are in that business already. My lady has some interest in that line of work. I assure you, working with her would be more glamorous than anything you've ever done before,'
'Fuck if I'm working for someone I just met on the street,' the escort says.
'Dear, lovely child. You will see and feel wonders that you have never even known to be. Work with me for a month, and I promise you shall never forget it,'
'No weird stuff?'
'Not in the way you think. The clients might be strange to you, but for a change they shall all be beautiful and skilled beyond measure,'
'Well fuck, if you can pull it off, I guess I'm in,'

You hold your hand out to shake. She shakes.

'Done,' Gwynn says, and the smile of her face reminds you of nothing as much as a great white shark. 'Come morning, he shall awake with no money to his name.' [cont.]

It'll still work, but it won't move, and won't be as precise until you get WOTW

Okay, you're pretty fucking sure you're being followed. You pick up your pace, and as soon as you are away from you start jogging. If someone is following you, they would have to start running as well.

You take a corner, running off the pavement to move faster, and make any pursuers more obvious, and you run head-first into a car driving just under the legal limit.

Behind the windshield, there is a man, next to him there sits a camera and in his hand there is a chicken and bacon sandwich, that he drops as soon as he recognizes you. When he does, he dives for his glove compartment and his gun.

In a panic, you decide to test out your new spell. In retrospect, it would be quite simple to exclude yourself as a potential target. Really, you should be able to do it on instinct. On the first casting, however, you manage to seriously fuck it up, and your world turns completely white and you lose your hearing for a moment in an explosion of sound.

The first thing you notice is that the impact of the car has damaged your left leg. It hurts like a son of a bitch just above the knee, though you can move it. You hope it isn't broken, but going by experience it's even odds that it's at least a hairline fracture.

Then, as your sight fails to return, you hear another bang. After the explosion of the flash spell, it takes you a moment to recognize the relatively more quiet sound as a gunshot. While the driver could no more hit you than you could hit him- what with being effectively blinded- the windshield collapses, and you fall into the car with him, cutting your forearms and face as you do. The cuts are shallow, and won't even slow you in the long term, but right now, all of it feels like a whole symphony of pain.

>Try to resolve the situation diplomatically.

First things first, you've got to get out of here. You roll out of the car and drop all the way to the ground. Then, just as the guy is following you out, you grab him by the gun hand and jerk violently against the side of the door, until you can get into the position to slam it on his arm.

You do once, but you do not have the proper leverage to break it. You sit up to finish the job, when the man shouts.

'Mark? Mark Blaine, right? I'm a P.I. Just a P. I., man, please!'

Your eyes start to slowly work again, and so do your ears.

'Then why the fuck did you try to kill me?' you say.

Then a tiny, tiny voice says:

'Sirs! I repeat! Stop Shouting! Put your weapons down, get out of the vehicle and put your hands behind your head! Comply now or we will be forced to open fire!'

Your sight is still just a bit blurry, but you look at the source of the sound and you see three figures in blue, and while you cannot make out the guns they are standing in a marksman's crouch.

'Shit,' you say.

Finally, if you succeed and roll doubles, the result counts as a critical success, and if you fail and roll doubles, the failure is somehow mitigated.

Very good payoff, very little investment required. We should go for this.

False Vision seems damn useful, but how close do we need to be to the person to trigger it?

Do we have to stand next to them while they sleep?
Can we fire it across a city at someone so long as we are aware of the look of their face?
Do we need to know their name, the exact location of their bed, or can we just Send Prophecy to Joe Asdfnigger and have him receive it?
I assume wizard wards will stop it dead cold, but for conning muggles, they ain't got shit.
