Welcome back, space warriors, to the fifty-third installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest! I'm Wong, your host, and you are once again Corporal Amos Wedge of the United Jovian Independent Defense Force, and this was totally preplanned and not because of a certain narrator's laptop eating his next-session notes last night. Don't worry, Gretchen fans, that interview will happen next session even if space and time themselves must be bent for it!

Last time, you accomplished your mission, you went sleepless under heavy stress after riding a combat adrenaline rush, and you made it home mostly on UJCIDF wake-up pills and paranoia that the Paladin was going to drop on your formation like a fox among chickens to reclaim your hostage. Of your squad, you had it the worst, because the standing plan in the event of Paladin was to scatter and regroup at the nearest settlement, which would probably have translated into you, with the hostage, facing it alone. At least Garret would be worth something if he surrendered, but you aren't exactly a property flush with political capital. You've heard bad things about what the Avalonians do to their prisoners too, really awful things. The worst you heard about was this sort of thorny seed they make you swallow, which then hatches in your stomach and gradually consumes you as material for its own growth over a matter of weeks, but there are enough ghastly stories that it's hard to choose a least-favorite. Despite your fears, though, you made it back to base safely and collapsed into a bed.

By the way, today's quest is sponsored by Bahamut Corporation. Fine, Europan engineering at affordable prices. Reliable. Versatile. Safe.

"Mmmmmmnnnnshhhhhpppppllll..." You articulately greet the world, rolling from your side onto your back, and then onto your other side, stretching your back and rubbing your cheeks with your palms. "Nph." You glance around blearily for your PC. You have an alarm set for breakfast, and since it hasn't gone off you're sure it can't be too late. It would be weird if you slept from late afternoon into the next morning, after all. You find it still in your pocket, and you resolve to stop falling asleep in your uniform, it's going to be all rumpled from this. According to the chronometer, it's been three and a half standard hours, the sun is setting outside the ship and the weather is a bit cooler than usual, perfect for short sleeves without being hot and muggy, but with a 20% chance of rain before midnight. It's a bit short for one of your naps, but since you can't think of any sound that awakened you you just attribute it to your own natural discipline and sit up.

You throw back the blanket, and realize someone must have thrown a blanket on over you. It's a deep scarlet with triangular patterns of gold and green, native Qu'liri work. Which you don't recall owning.

As a matter of fact, you don't recall your quarters having an easel or such a large desk. Or having so much paper on that desk, actual, real paper. Or having coffee tins full of pencils and small brushes. For that matter, you don't recall having a painted landscape of the field outside Innsmouth at sunrise above the bed either. Having two adjoining rooms off your sleeping quarters is a further novelty. The most novel thing, though, is the woman next to you. Her messy blonde hair spills across the pillow, but unlike you she's laying on top of the blanket almost as if she fell there. There's a small smile you're not used to seeing on her face, and her breathing is soft and tranquil.

An immediate check confirms that both of you still have your clothes on. Which is a relief. Doing the deed and having to take the consequences without remembering the fun parts would just be the worst.

You get up as stealthily as you can. She mumbles something incomprehensible and scratches her head before falling back asleep, but you manage to leave the bed without her awakening fully.

You take this opportunity to snoop. You're not exactly the most artistic person in the world. Art classes were mandatory at the Academy, but you mostly used them as a chance to nap. Still, her drawings look very good to you. They're lifelike and realistic in style, and there's a good mix of landscapes and portraits. You also find the blueprints for your gun, hand-drawn in pencil and with notes in incredibly sloppy handwriting. As you're shifting through them, you notice that most of the pilots and crew you've seen seem to have a portrait. There are quite a few of a young woman in an officer's uniform, along with the Captain and Marilyn. You even find a lot of self-portraits, although most of these have Irina wearing somewhat risque outfits. It's the one you nearly step on, though, that really catches your attention. It must have fallen off the edge of the desk, it's the newest and about halfway finished. It's a portrait of you, standing on the open hatch of your Pumpkinseed. You look exhausted, with dark circles under your eyes and your hair disheveled, helmet tucked under one arm and the handle for the liftwire held in the other. Despite this, your portrait has a quietly triumphant smile, "Wow, are my arms really that big?" You squeeze one of them. "I didn't know my shoulders were that broad, either." You wonder momentarily if you really look that imposing, or if she drew you more muscular than you really are. It's been said that the worst view of us is the one we have of ourselves, so you're momentarily taken aback considering it. You flex a few times, just for fun.

At that moment, you hear a knock on the door. Irina doesn't immediately wake up, but she does stir.

You don't hesitate. After all, rumors about you are something you don't mind, but Irina seems like she has it hard enough without confirming to whoever this is that she has been sharing a bed with you for the last few hours.

You utilize a maneuver you perfected at the Academy back when you were study-buddies-with-benefits with the Dean's granddaughter. Silent as a spider, you drop down nearly into a push-up position, splay your legs, and scuttle under the bed like a frog. You are safe here, safe and secure. The darkness is your ally. Although the objects you find in the dark confirming that Irina Gaunt is a lonely single woman indeed are not your allies. Not the least little bit. It's actually somewhat cramped down here.

The door buzzes again, and you hear the sound of a thrown pillow striking it before Irina's feet swing down from the bed to rest on the floor. You hear her patting the bed right where you were sitting, then a muffled, "...Amos?" From her.

The door buzzes yet again, "Coming!" You hear her growl at the intruder, before she stomps over to the door and hits the button to open it.

"Hiya!" It's Marilyn, and you smell coffee, "So how did you two sleep~?" You can hear her snickering.

"It was fine. He fell asleep almost as soon as we entered the room, I didn't get the chance to get his full analysis of the new rifle. I didn't want to wake him, so I thought I'd stay up and draw for a little, but I ended up passing out too." Irina sighs, "Just my luck, isn't it? He must have sneaked out of here when he woke up and realized where he was."

"Rina..." Marilyn interrupts, but she's overwhelmed.

"...And why wouldn't he? Who'd want to stay in my room?" Irina's voice grows louder.

"Um, Rina?" Lin-Lin keeps trying.

"I mean it! Don't try to patronize me! He must think I'm some kind of creep for taking him here, I...I screwed up, Lin. I WARNED him I was clingy and he didn't LISTEN and so somehow I must have thought it was okay to let my guard down and...why are you shaking your head like that?" Irina questions.

"I was talking with the Captain in the hall outside for a nice, long while, dummy. He didn't sneak past me, and...look, right here. There's a depression on the bed where he was, and it's still warm. I think I can smell his soap, too. He's still here somewhere."

"Oh Juno no, he's found it!" Irina bolts impressively for a woman in heels, throwing open one of the doors adjoining the room and stomping inside, "Amos? Amoooos?" From under the bed, you can see the telltale blue-green glow of a hydroponics room of some sort, "Amos, I can explain!"

A pair of feline ears slowly descend into your view, then Lin-Lin's upside-down face. She's peering over the edge of the bed right at you, "Hiya Amos."

"Hi Lin-Lin, do you want any fish?" You wave to her.

Her eyes narrow, "The only fish you'll catch down there are dolphins, and I don't want to taste 'em." She somersaults off the bed, landing on her feet, hooks a hand under the edge, and lifts it up just enough to grab you by the shirt collar and yank you out, "Whatcha doin', Amos?"

You hold your hands up, palms-out, "I didn't want Irina to get caught in bed with me, so I hid."

"Amos!" Irina's voice is oddly relieved as she rushes out of the private hydroponics room, shuts the door, then deliberately locks it with her ID card, "You stayed in here, right? You didn't wander around the rest of the suite?"

You look at her curiously, "Yeah, I'd only just got up when Marilyn arrived." You spot three cups off coffee on a tray on the desk and take one. Coffee would hit the spot right now.

"Oh-ho~ Now I see what's going on with you twoooo~" Marilyn's grin is predatory, "Caught in bed with her, you say. Just got up, you say. This explains why she's being so weird. So what happened, lovebirds~?"

You take a deep breath, "It was soft. Soft and warm."

"Ooooh!" The Qu'liri woman claps her hands.

Irina stares at you, makes a strangled squeaking sound, and turns scarlet.

"She nestled up against me like a frightened sparrow, and I kept her warm as best I could." You clap your fist against your chest.

Irina's entire frame shudders, and she claps a hand over her mouth, the other scrambling around on her desk until it finds an empty tin of coffee grounds.

"Alone! Two hearts beating together within the steel belly of this ship, with none to hear or see us, we were finally able to vent the feelings that were in our hearts. Namely exhaustion. Ow!" You wince as an art pencil bounces off your forehead, then a second, then a third.

"AMOSSSSSSSSSS!" Irina looms like an angry titan, pencils bristling between every finger and giving her fists a spined look as she barrages you with them. Her arm is shockingly accurate, and she's focusing on your face, "You melonheaded idiot!"

Lin-Lin's shoulders droop, "So nothing happened? Aw. Are you guys...y'know...kind of together? Because Amos is pretty cute, honestly, and if not...well, maybe I'd be interested. He's a good source of protein, at least."

The stinging barrage does not let up.

"We only just met." You start, holding your arms up to ward off the storm of art supplies.

The barrage momentarily halts.

"But...well, she's nicer than she thinks, she has a good throwing arm, she can draw really well, and we're already friends, so..." You scratch the back of your head. It would be really helpful if you were Roarke Starwind right now, or someone with a real talent for reading other people, "...I want to take things a little more slowly, do it right. Being allies, we have to make sure it would work before we become anything else. Even if she's beautiful and looks really hot in a bikini." You smile.

The barrage does not resume, but Irina remains very, very red. She leans down and hurriedly begins scooping up her pencils, "What he said."

"Plus she made me a really cool gun. If I broke her heart, she might rig the next one to explode." You nod sagely.

She cocks her armful of pencils back, then pauses, muttering in agreement, "Yes, I really might..." She gives you a little scowl that's almost cute enough to be a pout.

Lin-Lin's tail swishes back and forth, "Ehehehehe~ Well, since the answer is 'not yet', I won't give up!" She points at you cheerfully, "Keep feeding me and keep fishing near my favorite nap spot, and you'll never be lonely! I, the invincible Marilyn, guarantee it!" She pats your backside, spins around, and saunters out of the room, whistling.

Irina meticulously puts her supplies away in silence, still blushing.

only official translations are OG1 and 2 on GBA, and the new Moon Dwellers that just came out (although the quality is a bit... iffy.)

After the door closes behind Marilyn, you clear your throat and step closer to Irina, "Are we still on for tonight?"

She looks over her shoulder at you, her blush fading, "Of course. Vodka likes meeting new people." She smiles crookedly.

You glance down at the portrait of you, "You must have a really good eye to memorize a scene that quickly. Am I really that muscly?"

She smiles a little more, "The pilot suit makes you look bigger, but you are pretty buff. It's nice to see, especially with the way your uniform fits on you. Don't compliment me too much, I was able to get a good look at you while you were asleep, you had that expression the whole time." Her cheeks redden again, "I-I didn't mean like I was watching you sleep! Well, I was, but it was for a sketch, that isn't weird!"

"Not weird at all!" You agree in a chipper way and a little too quickly, "Hey, you know I meant everything I said, right?"

She reddens a little more, but from her smile she doesn't seem to mind, "So do I. You're a really, really good man, and I'd love to look at you and draw you some more. You said I'm beautiful, so it's okay if I say the same about you, right?"

"Right." You agree. "So..."

"I'll need a couple of hours to finish the work I actually have to get done tonight, but after that I'm all yours. I don't know precisely how long it will be, so...here, give me your PC." She adds you to her contacts list, and adds herself to yours, then hands it back. For a brief moment, your fingertips blush, and her smile is warm as the morning sun, "Meet me here when I message you. I feel a little unsafe walking through Innsmouth completely alone, even if I carry my sidearm."

"A-Alright." You stammer slightly, "I have to go make sure my squad is alright. See you soon, okay?" You smile back. She nods, and you depart.

You smile even more when you see her contact image.

You said you were worried about your squadmates, but you're really worried about one in particular.

Simon has panicked twice when the Paladin showed up, and that's a truly bad sign. Nobody has gotten hurt yet, but it only takes one weak link to shatter even the strongest chain. You're all soldiers, all three of you. Voluntary enlistees, good enough to get into SOUL. You're not civilian kids pushed by circumstance into being forced to pilot unfamiliar mecha, you've been trained for this. You firm up your jaw and go to confront him.

You don't need to send him a message to know where he is. Simon Biggs is a creature of habit, and by habit he'll be in the mechbay doing simms in his Pumpkinseed II.

The simms do a wonderful job training rookie pilots. You fit the system into your mech, and it plugs into the comprehensive UJCIDF flight data for all models of enemy mecha on which sufficient data has been collected to give the limited-scope AI pilot enough information to use one. One can fight in arena-style battles against enemy mecha, or participate in larger-scale missions run by an instructor. Such missions are frequently used for exams at the Academy. You've always done well in the simms, good enough to more than make up for your marginal marks in your elective classes, but years ago a friend of yours discovered a flaw in the system that stopped you from taking your performance too much to heart.

That friend was Caesar, Heinrich Merrow himself, one of the few people to solidly beat your marks in the simms. Like a good sport, even though you were older than him at the time, you congratulated him and made a point of hanging out with him at the time, but he seemed unsatisfied. Perhaps it was a result of all his experience playing other simmgames, but he adamantly insisted the AI pilots lack spontaneity and creativity.

..huh. That actually explains Jesus' style to me. He's really good at sims and was able to take down the stone soldiers, but it's likely due to the fact that their discipline never really gave them the creative skill to deal with a extreme range sniper.

Might be something to consider. We know he's green, so a unexpected attack might just make him falter and freak out.

The UJCIDF tactical simulator program is a well-funded and expensive thing. It isn't even limited to basic mech models, and can reproduce ace customs along with replicating the fighting style of the ace in question. The reflex speed and awareness level can also be adjusted to some degree, although for fighting ace machines using the pilot's original data is most popular.

However, Caesar claimed that even at maximum level, the aces produced by the simms are never quite as good as the real thing. They just don't quite have that same level of experience, they aren't as creative, aggressive pilots are a touch less aggressive and cautious pilots are a bit less canny. He then dismissed the entire system as 'for casuals' and launched into a diatribe on the differences between the Bluegill Joe games and how it was pivotal for the industry and somehow mixed it by talking about this game that was about lesbian witches with fancy hats or something. If it didn't all somehow turn him into an excellent pilot with a remarkably level head in battle, you would have assumed he was crazy long ago.

Simon has always seemed to find them calming, though. He's logged more simm hours than you, Garret, or Caesar.

Which is why you expect to find him in the cockpit of his mech. "Simon!" You call out, walking into the bay and taking a look at your Pumpkinseed. Even with the cosmetic damage, it looks quite proud, and on a deep level you feel like you proved something today. That machine, smaller and more lightly armored than a Knight, has proven that it can take out the Avalonian line mech one-on-one even when the enemy pilot is an ace. It's not just a victory for you. It's a victory for Bahamutcorp, for the Jovian way of designing mecha, for your ancestors who worked hard and sacrificed much to make the UJCIDF the best military force in the galaxy in your opinion, a victory for Jupiter itself. The biggest and best planet in the Solar System.

True, but remember, he likely doesn't think things in a out of the box way. There are many ways to deal with a sniper. Slaving thrusters through a cheap pod to get us there faster, having our crew deploy anti beam chaff, decoys, using the enemy as a shield.. we just need to think outside the box.
>>
>>48979725
Our bits should help us deal with him
>>
So we have a lot of ace waifus. Which one would be the worst ace waifu to face in their mech if we weren't Roarke at the time?
>>
>>48979739
Yes and no. It'll be great once we get close to wreck him, but they will be moving at around our speed. I would actually say a full luck shot with our harpoon at max range could work if we get his arm. By the sounds of it, his rifle is a two hander.
>>
>>48979725

Disposable pods full of nothing but thrusters are totally a thing in this quest and setting, by the way. They've showed up before, and they were the default way to give a mech more speed at the cost of maneuverability up until the Manta was developed.

The Manta will forever be underrated by mech fans despite how extremely useful it is.
>>
>>48979775
I'm going to say Siren seeing how quickly she destroyed Clemmy

>>48979785
If its in empty space then ya, but if we get him in a debris field or a station we can use the bits to drive him where we would need him
>>
>>48979807
Yeah I can see the shadows being a bitch for a close combat specialist like us but I'd be more worried about the tarrasque piloted by fatima without us having a terrain or numbers advantage.

Dpends on the situation. Sammy is a problem if you don't know she's coming for you and you don't have officer armor to deal with that shock damage removing turns from you. Fatima has a giant beam cannon and shielding that no-sells anything that can't produce 8 kills of hurt, Clemmy is just a pile of pointy bits and harpoons, but I'd say Rose is the most troublesome for the average joe. Those busters hurt like hell and her mobility and clones make it very hard to hit unless you have a blast missile. Kinda reminds me of megaman bosses actually. The Archen can't penetrate the Tarrasque, the Flowerhorn can't hit the real Archen, the melee systems of the Flowerhorn smack the Betta out of the water, and the Betta's stealth options lets it get close to the Tarrasque to deal with it's defenses.
>>
>>48979807
Nah... are you forgetting about Fatima and the Tarrasque? How does a pumpkinseed II kills that!?
>>
>>48979909
Annnd I meant>>48979775

>>48979805
And now I have another idea. What if we make a Manta Bit for us to ride? Trick it out for max speed with enough armor to survive a hit, four wings, and a torso? Could attach to the back when not in use.
>>
>>48979896

While you're flying away, Roarke is flying at you, in a mech that is faster than most mechs that aren't jets, and every time you stop to take a shot is another quarter kilometer less between you and the Knuckle Kaiser's fists of doom.
>>

"Siiiiiiimon!" You cup your hands around your mouth like a megaphone and call out again. Even if he's in the middle of a simm, your voice at full blast should reach him. You've always had good lungs, and your mother always used to say with pride that you were the loudest baby she'd ever heard of, "SIMOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!"

"R-r-right here." Says a huddled mass in a blanket that you mistook for some spare parts left by the mechanics by the foot of Simon's Pumpkinseed.

"What are you doing?" You ask, quite naturally.

He shakes his head vigorously. His face is pale, almost greenish, and his eyes are wide and haunted, restlessly moving around, "I-I-I can't do it, Amos. I can't get back in the cockpit again, I can't do it!"

The fact that you're sympathetic only makes you more angry. He's one of your best friends, even if he's always been the shrimpy tagalong of the group. The four of you managed to make it through the Academy to become elite soldiers of Jupiter, the best of the best of the best, together. So as he sits there and tells you he doesn't want to do it anymore, your right arm begins to itch. From somewhere deep within you comes the urge to just hit him.

Instead, you take a knee and put your hand on his shoulder, "Simon, buddy, what's wrong?"

He shakes his head violently, "I just can't do it! Every time...every time I hear that song in my head..." He rakes his fingers along his temples and into his hear, tearing out a few strands, "I'm not strong like you, Amos. I'm not r-really good with girls like Garret is, or smart like Amos. There's only one ace I can even try to be like, and I can't even beat him in the simms. I've tried, I've tried over and over again to do what C-Caesar said and get good, but...but it's just not working, okay!?"

"That''s not true. You've done fine both times we've actually fought, what's the problem now? You even did that thruster kick move you were practicing and it came out alright." You smile, "Screw the simms, you're a good pilot."

"Those guys aren't the problem. I'm not even s-s-s-scared fighting them. I can breathe until...until the song starts." He shudders, looking down at the ground, his voice shrinking almost into silence before he starts speaking again, at first in a low, hysterical voice but gradually escalating into a shout, "That thing isn't a mech, Amos. It isn't. It doesn't move like one, it moves like it's alive, I-I watched it. It's a monster, a nightmare! I can't face that thing out there! Nobody can! It's hopeless, we're all going to die!" By the end, he's shouting.

So you raise your right hand, and you force your fist to unclench, you flatten your palm and extend your fingers. Your shoulder turns as you bring your arm down in what would normally be a face-crushing haymaker. The sound it makes when it hits Simon on the cheek and sends him sprawling to the floor echoes throughout the bay. You don't even look around to see if anyone has noticed. The fact that he didn't instinctively catch your arm with one of his fancy martial arts blocks is a very bad sign, but the way that he's staring at you with something resembling sanity in his eyes is a good one.

You stand off and dust off your hands, nodding, "You're right. We're all going to die." You say simply.

"Wait, w-what?" He stares at you as if you've gone insane now.

"Well, the squad won't function as well with a replacement pilot, so Garret and I will probably get killed before we can pull off anything sneaky to take that thing down. That leaves the Cicero with fifteen pilots, most of them not aces, to defend against the Paladin. Of course, there are Innsmouth's own forces, but a lot of them are Qu'liri and might side with Avalon if it looks less likely to turn their homes into a warzone. Plus their machines are old. Captain Clearwater seems like a good guy, so he'll defend Innsmouth to the death. That means we die, and he dies, and the other pilots die, and the crew probably die..that includes Irina and Marilyn, and even that asshole Lieutenant who will die sneering at us."

"Wait, why are you mentioning the mechanic girls in particular, I don't understa-" Simon tries to cut in, but you plow over him by raising your voice.

"...We aren't THAT far from the front lines, and with an Avalonian base in the rear even more of our troops will be cut off and die. The front will definitely move northward and spark a major offensive. Regardless of who the people of Innsmouth side with, either the war will move here or the UJCIDF will try to retake this city. Fighting here is inevitable. That means even more people will die. The pretty girl whose grandma started a restaurant with Jovian-style burgers, definitely. That little Qu'liri kid who owns a bait stand and knows where all the fishing spots are...at least, where they are now. I imagine the artillery fire isn't going to leave much of this peaceful little river left. The old geezers who sit out front of that tavern near the gates with their rifles and watch the traffic because THEY don't believe they're too old for the militia and THEY don't want to see everyone die." You roll on like a storm.

"Amos...please stop shouting...please?" Simon winces, covering his ears.

"WELL, WHAT'S THE POINT OF THAT WHEN WE'RE ALL CORPSES ANYWAY!" You bellow, "Get up, asshole! We'll probably all get killed anyway, but at least my friend won't die like a bitch on his knees! You're a soldier! You agreed to carry the weight of those lives!"

"B-b-but I can't...I'm not strong enough..." He blubbers, even as he rises to his feet.

Your left cross to his other cheek sends him staggering against the leg of his mech. To tell the truth, you're not a very polished boxer at all, but you put your heart into it, "Who said you're doing it alone!? We're not SOUL B, we don't solo smalltime Cali Station pirates for the propaganda vids, we're real soldiers! You don't have to be as good as that pilot, we're a team! Together, we can do it!"

"Wuh-wuh-what if we can't?" He wails.

Personally I think we've hit the optimal number when it comes to Roake.

We have Clemmy, who is an up close fighter like we are and shares our bloodlust, if to a more extreme degree.

Sam, elegance and grace, A calm center in a wild storm. Espionage is her forte, and her analytical skills are invaluable.

Karen is our engineering genius and the long term friend who became more. She knows more about our past than any of the others, and her love is tempered with who we really are instead of who we might appear to be.

Red Siren is our Pirate Queen, and queen she certainly is. She shares our dreams of conquest, and will raise us to new heights. She wants to see us at the top and be right there with us when we get there.

Fatima. She's the Commander, the order, the stern hand. Like Red Siren she wants us at the top, and by god she's going to make damn sure we shine like a diamond in every way as we get there. She won't settle for anything less than our best.

We also have drill bits, tentatively, but I haven't seen enough of her to form an opinion yet. Personally I think she'll be a good fit, once we figure out how that's going to work.

"Then we all die anyway, but we die like badasses who gave it our all and took a bunch of them with us. We'll be honored to have saved as many lies as we could, and many more yet to be. Stand up, because a soldier can fall, but he can't stay down. Go beat that pilot in your mech and show everyone your strength." You point at his Pumpkinseed II, "It doesn't matter that you fell once, just get back on your horse!" You clench your fist

Simon's eyes are large, and he sways slightly as he straightens up, "Y-you think I can?"

You clap him on the shoulder, "Yes I fucking do. I'm sorry for hitting you."

He shakes his head and smiles, "D-Don't be. Thanks, Amos, for snapping me out of it." He wipes the blood off his lip. "I don't think the simms will help, though. I've never beat him, not once, I've tried hundreds of times, memorized his patterns, watched and rewatched every fight. I even customized my mech's controls to work more like what the Knuckle Kaiser's probably do based on the combat data and its original manufacture. In the simms, I USE a Kaiser, and I still lose. Every. Single. Time."

You shake your head. That's not the kind of problem that would bother you, but Simon is a different person. If you had to fight Roarke Starwind, you would take the option of not doing it. Set a trap, use your teammates to immobilize or damage him somehow before he inevitably tears your mech apart. Simon, though, Simon is trying to match him head-on. Somewhere, deep down, he wants to fight Roarke Starwind. In its own way, that's pretty ballsy, "...You've got guts, Simon, you're just rattled. Screw that creepy Paladin playing mindgames with us. If you want to fight like Admiral Starwind, try thinking and acting a little more like him." You grin. This feels like good advice to you. You're confident you made the Right Choice.

It works, Kamille is a really, really good pilot and he needed the slapping. There's another major factor that contributes to his development as a man and as a pilot, in my opinion, but she shows up later.

"Right." He nods, and goes away with a spring in his step.

You get yourself some food, and are out with your binoculars on top of the ship scouting out good fishing spots for later when the message arrives.

You have to think hard about whether you've seen Irina in anything but a lab coat before when you go to pick her up. To your amazement, she's stunning in a little black gown and takes your arm with a coquettish smile. All done up, she's radiant.

You're grinning like a jack-o-lantern and you know it. There's going drinking as work friends, and then there's going drinking with someone dressed like that.

Although you're happy, you somehow have this feeling, like you're being watched with unfriendly eyes. Eyes full of hatred.

The little pub is quiet, a bit smoky, and close to the river. The booths are dark, and the vodka warms your throat. Now that she's here, Irina actually seems a little shy.

>Interesting... You know... They say every creation says something about their creators... What you would say that your mech tells about you? *smile*

Then proceed o tease her.

The thing is, on the way off the ship, you see the source. She's a young woman with close-cut, dark hair, and an expression that would normally be bright and peppy, the kind of person who's impossible to hate. Only, she's looking at you with hatred, alright. So much that it frightens you. Lieutenant Asphodel might regard you the way most people regard a deer tick, but that's an impersonal desire to squash you and irritation that you're around. This person, though, is practically baring her fangs when she sees you. You recognize her as one of the frequent subjects in Irina's drawings.

For now, you ignore her, and although you keep an eye out for her in the city she doesn't seem to make any further appearances.

Those sketches, of someone so happy and innocently friendly, and the weird contrast with those eyes bulging with rage that you saw, are still on your mind as you sit across the table from a quiet Irina. "So, what got you into sketching?"

She smiles bitterly, "I was always good at it. I loved art ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a painter, but...I never got the chance. My older sister had an artistic talent too, and our parents were too poor to afford lessons for more than one girl. She got to sing, I had to learn how to work." She sighs, looking out the window, then up at you, "When I draw or paint, it feels like I'm capturing a moment, not always a happy one, but one that I wanted to preserve. Even if life is cruel or unfair, there are always things worth remembering." She takes a sip of her drink. You have a strong tolerance for liquor, and she obviously is no amateur herself, the two of you are going at a steady pace as you talk.

"That's true." You acknowledge, "So, I was wondering...you're the Bahamutcorp rep, right? But Marilyn is the Cicero's chief technician. Which of you is in charge?" You take a sip.

"That's actually slightly complicated. See, the Cicero's mechbay is Lin-Lin's utterly, she has full authority over everything that happens there and who is allowed where. However, my company supplies all of the mecha in that bay and in theory I have authority to decommission every last one of them if it came down to it. Technically, my actual role is to be the mechanic for your squad, but the expectations Bahamut Corporation places on me exceed that role. For instance, I'm expected to record what I observe so that useful data can be stripped from it and extracted into future projects, I'm expected to report on how the military is using our machines, I'm expected to create new products, innovate, and experiment if necessary. Above all else, I'm expected to make sure that our mecha get results that will encourage the UJCIDF to continue relying on fine, Europan engineering." Her shoulders slump, "...Why couldn't Roarke Starwind have been flying a nice Warmouth instead of some fossilized Bucephalus mech from the War when he beat up my poor Pumpkinseed IIs? It just isn't fair..." She downs another.

"I've been wondering about that. Why make a Pumpkinseed II? Why not another mech?" You see her start to glare, and hurriedly add, "I really like it, I followed as much of the project as was leaked to the public since I knew I was getting one early, but you're clearly a valuable technician."

"I am." She adds, begrudgingly.

"You are. You're good enough to design equipment and mecha for a SOUL squad, so why are you using your energy to continue other people's work rather than make your own supermech?" You ask.

She smiles. "By Minerva, you're cute." She rests her elbow on the table, and her chin in her palm, looking at you, "I feel dirty, talking about it this way. Where do you think Bahamutcorp makes most of its profit? On the ace mecha? The Bass Frame? No, they're show pieces. Powerful show pieces, yes, but what they do is show what we're capable of and what our customers can have if they're willing to pay enough. No, Bahamut Corporation makes money every time the Jovian government funds more Bluegills, Mantas, Pumpkinseeds, Pumpkinseed IIs, Warmouths, and the various classes of cruisers and battleships we supply. I'm good at my job, and I'm good at not putting myself first, so working on a project as profitable as the Pumpkinseed II was actually a massive step up for me. Thanks to you, it still might make my career, headshots look good on JNN and social media and you just keep getting them." She smiles wanly, looks around, then leans closer, "Hey Amos...want to know a secret?"

You nod, drawn in by her words and the odd mixture of pride and bitterness in them.

She sighs, then says quietly, as if expecting to be overheard, "First, the Pumpkinseed was a mistake. A failure. Yes, it can kill Harpies, but that isn't impressive, especially since Harpies are usually faster. A Bluegill can do what a Pumpkinseed does more cheaply and almost as effectively. The Pumpkinseed just isn't enough of an improvement to merit its cost, and worse, it gets torn to pieces by most larger mecha. That's the first greasy part, the second is the bold vision of our honorable Board of Directors trying to redeem a flawed product line after an extremely expensive advertising campaign that greatly elevated expectations of the product."

"The Pumpkinseed II started off with a great idea. The Pumpkinseed was supposed to be a mech that would transform the market, but the Palomino is just too entrenched and frankly, for its weight class the Palomino is the better mech. It's just not as cute as the Pumpkinseed, and cute won't save your life. So, radical thought inbound, what if the Pumpkinseed II really did transform the market? What if it really was the hypermodern device it was supposed to be? And here's the kicker, what if you didn't have to scrap all the Pumpkinseeds out there already to do it? Any Pumpkinseed can be converted into a Pumpkinseed II with a parts and integration kit that we make available for sale. It's a much shorter list of changes than you would think. The beam rapier in place of the fold-out vibro-gladius, the automatic shield sub-servo in place of the old, standard shield. Improved thrusters. The onboard missiles. A lot of small alterations mostly geared towards performance optimization. Bahamutcorp makes a big, patriotic show of improving the UJCIDF's line mecha during a time of war...for cheap, to anyone who just looks at the numbers...and pockets a truly staggering number of credits selling what boils down to extra parts. The best part is, everybody wins. Even you and me, because while the Pumpkinseed may only have been effective against pirates until they militarized and started playing army, the Pumpkinseed II is now proving that it can stand up on a battlefield against larger mecha and win wars." She raises her glass, "My machine kills Avalonians. That's what I'll be remembered for. I'll remember that I made a kit for a failed machine that was sold for more than it was worth. Juno, I hope my creation doesn't say anything about me." She drains the rest of her drink.

"You mean besides the fact that it's stylish and fun and effective." You note.

She smiles and gestures halfheartedly at you to stop.

"You're too hard on yourself." You chide her.

Honestly, compared to the Strike and Freedom, the Original felt like a more useful machine. Sure the strike had the packs and the Freedom had enough guns to fill a small battleship, but they both must have Kira to actually be useful machines. The Gundam on the other hand, when you strip it of it's weaponry was more a machine that helped the pilot grow. Sturdy frame, the Core Fighter allowed for the pilot to escape battle, and the learning computer helped not only old pilots with a lot of the macros for its machines, but served as a way for new pilots to do just as well. In short, while the Strike is meant for a ace, the Gundam is meant to make a ace.
>>
"I am not." She protests.

You don't let up, "Yes, you are. Look at you, you're responsible for a cutting-edge military machine that's saved my life multiple times and is doing the same across Solar territory, and you're sad because it's making too much money for your bosses. You're a success already, and the best ally I could have."

She stares at you, "Vodka likes you a lot. It really, really does."

"We've been very friendly with vodka this evening." You note.

She smiles warmly, "I know. But that's okay, right? We're both still sober...ish...right?" She reaches out across the table and covers your hand with yours, "I think vodka should go to bed and leave us grownups alone for a while, hm?" She smiles in a way that makes you think she practiced that line a few times in her head first.

"Irina, you..." You barely get a word in edgewise.

"Amos, I'm glad you're here." She bites her lower lip, "Let's go back to the ship. To my room. We'll see how it works. I'm not asking for more than that, I don't want to trap you with commitment or anything. Friends with...with benefits, I guess, if we both like where this leads. I know the situation we're in, either of us could find ourselves...alone again at any time. I just don't want to regret not doing this with you while we're both still together, enjoying a captured moment of happiness." She leans across the table towards you, lips puckering.

Indeed, though the same could be said about the Strike. While it did fight a lot of other gundams, against the standard military machines, it could easily walk through them thanks to phase shift armor. Only difference is, Kira specialized the program for himself and was already pretty good thanks to his coordination while Amuro had to earn it the hard way.

So you kiss her. She leans into it, and so do you. You don't think you stop kissing her for more than a few minutes on your way back to the ship, only to remember your mutual dignity upon reentering its corridors. You both try to look professional, but you can't stop smiling at each other. You don't see that short-haired girl, thankfully.

Irina's bed is even warmer with her in it, beneath you. She takes her time thoroughly investigating your specs before maintenance begins. It turns out that the two of you are perfectly compatible, but being rational adults you have to field-test it repeatedly to ensure the validity of the results. The only flaw in the evening is that it's a little hard for you to find a comfortable sleeping position with all four of her limbs wound around you tightly and her already fast asleep. You apologize for waking her up as you shift positions, and she lazily smiles and kisses you again, before nestling into you and going back to sleep. Hell with it, you might die on patrol tomorrow, the two of you might as well spend the night happy.
