Hello and welcome back to Mortal Kombat Konquest. On today's episode, we'll be following Sheeva, champion of the shokan and their representative on the New Defenders. Sheeva is something of a black sheep on the team, a proud and honor-driven warrior attempting to live and fight alongside warriors much different from herself. She has attempted to acclimate to her new surroundings, but old habits are hard to kill and adjustment is rarely easy...

There is nothing quite as pleasing as making something with one's own hands. For a shokan, a race that prides itself on physical and martial might, they hold this to be an absolute truth in many things. A shokan would prefer to build their own home rather than take or inherit the work of others. The same holds for family: a shokan and their mate must always have a hand in raising their own family, never someone else's. These are core concepts to the shokan culture, simple and strong, deeply rooted in the psyche of the people. Tradition over change, strength of body and mind, function over form.

It is not surprising, then, that the shokan place less emphasis on art, but only a fool would claim them to be without it. A shokan's view on art is shaped by their view on its utility: what purpose does it serve? They prefer their statues large and strong, shaped of rough materials that are hard to break, much like the shokan themselves. The grand palace and burial halls of Kuatan are made up of pillars, statues and sarcophagi meant to pay homage to the strength of their ancestors. Shokan rarely take up the schools of painting, weaving or lesser practices; they prefer to carve and sculpt.

Such as it is with pottery. A pot is utilitarian; it can carry water and more. Generations of shokan have forged pots and carried jugs full of liquids and vegetables upon their shoulders, heads and backs. It is a proud tradition for one to make a pot, fill it with something important and carry it for miles. Furthermore, a pot is raw material given form by one's own hands, perhaps the simplest and most direct representation of a shokan's core values expressed in art.

For Sheeva, it is one of the few things that she does to relax. She could not count all of the works she has made, but ever since discovering this fascinating Earthrealm invention called the potter's wheel she has been working overtime.

Sheeva is making a water jug. She has worked on many projects, but this time she feels the desire to branch out a bit. Other students have made elegant designs, with curving handles and openings, so she would like to see if she can. Working with the clay, she shapes it upwards and works to give it a wider design on the bottom which curves slightly inwards before going outwards once more.

She sits now in a college class in Australia behind one such wheel, working with her four hands upon a wet mound of clay. Her large, three-fingered hands run along the muddy surface of the clay, shaping it with gentle yet firm movements. She wears a smock over her usual attire, and nearby on a device known as a radio classical harp music is played, which reminds her of Jagara, a comforting thing in this foreign land. It was Kaito's idea for her to participate in this class, though her involvement is largely lonesome, as every other person in the class is utterly terrified of her and avoids her.

It is understandable, of course, for them to fear. Sheeva is a large and intimidating woman by herself, but she knows it is not her own visage that drives away the people of Earth, but rather that of the shokan species. Twenty years prior they engaged in a brutal invasion of this realm and were instrumental to Shao Kahn's armies. They appeared through portals alongside other "monstrous" races of Outworld to attack the cities of Earthrealm, targeting the largest population centers across the planet. In a short period of time, much destruction was wrought and the shokan were key participants in it. Although enough time has passed for children born in that time to now be adults, as most members of the New Defenders are, the people of Earthrealm have not forgotten the invasion.

Sheeva finds herself amused by their behaviour, like mice scurrying before a predator. They avoid eye contact which she cares little for; so long as she is not interrupted, she could care less if they use their strange handheld devices to record her from the corners of the room. Ever since appearing on their "television broadcast" where the thin-haired and old Secretary Blake introduced the team to the world, it has been her understanding that there is controversy amongst some sections of the human population over her place on the team. Again, she cannot say she minds; let any who oppose her come forth to challenge her in Mortal Kombat. So long as they hide behind their screens and keyboards, she will pay them no heed whatsoever.

In this pottery class alone, they cower and shy away when she walks by their tables. When the teacher instructs them to present their works, they lavish praise upon her simple designs out of fear, not respect or admiration. The professor himself is a rather meek man, who gives her good "grades" despite others creating much more artistic designs than she. But when she points this out, their makers are quick to say that hers is better. Spineless, the lot of them. Her time here has given her great perspective on the normal humans her team protects. But right now, such things aren't quite on the front of her mind.

In fact, Sheeva finds herself thinking about things that make her feel uneasy, despite the calming harp music and the clay she is working with. Perhaps it comes from her exposure to Earthrealm customs and culture, perhaps it comes from her separation from her people and Outworld in general, but ever since joining the team she has found it difficult to adjust to her new surroundings. She lives in a room she did not create, surrounded by technology her people did not forge and fights alongside a new, younger generation. While many of her teammates have direct blood connections to warriors she knows and respects, she finds herself at a conflict of personality with many of them. Upstart, brash, arrogant, disrespectful, these are all words that she could use to describe more than a handful of them; qualities to be expected from the youth of a comparatively shorter-lived species.

Furthermore, this contrast between home and hearth is seemingly widened the more time she spends in Earthrealm. Though she rarely interacts with anyone from this class (or indeed the wider world around it) she learns more and more about them the more time she remains. Their culture is vastly different from her own, as they live what Cassie Cage referred to as a more "modern" existence, which Sheeva took offense to, as it implied the shokan lived a "primitive" existence. She was keen to debate and defend her people's traditional ways, as she has always been proud and honorable when it comes to matters of the shokan, but her own observations from classes like these and her interactions with her Earthrealm teammates has taught her much about their people.

They have grown so powerful in their own realm that they can afford to exist in comfort without every member of their race being a warrior, or a builder, or a hunter. Rudimentary research has told her that humans also outnumber her kind by a massive factor, but numbers alone do not promise superiority. The forces of an Outworld united under Shao Kahn were outnumbered and technologically outmatched by Earthrealm, but with their technology and "modern" life has come a weakening of other, baser strengths. They have largely lost courage and honor, at least in the ways a shokan would view these qualities. They have gained much, this cannot be denied, but a thousand shokan could still defeat ten thousand humans in battle.

Of course there are exceptions to the humans, such as the members of her team. At one point, Sheeva had contemplated if the very nature of Earth itself was what had made the humans into what they are; Outworld is harsh, dangerous and often deadly. It therefore breeds harsh, dangerous and deadly people, like the shokan. But the humans have tamed their realm, they now control it to a point where life is safe. Certainly there exist dangerous regions, and people who wish to dwell in them, but for the most part life in Earthrealm is safe for its people.

Sheeva had a dream, recently, though she knows not what brought it upon her. Perhaps it was just a flight of fancy, but it was also grim. Duroc had perished, the shokan were in disarray, their lands threatened to be wiped out. Sheeva had stepped up and led them, and soon enough became queen by her own hand after striking a deal with the world leaders of Earthrealm to lead her people to Earthrealm, to this very land of Australia, and here she ruled upon a stone throne. She had been told that by Kaito that Australia was still a harsh and dangerous land in itself, so perhaps the dream it was a desire to live here and similarly tame it with her people. A dream, and nothing more, for such a thing had never come to pass. Sheeva was not a ruler, but even if she was, would she fare any better than Duroc? She greatly admired her eldest cousin, for he was a just ruler and compassionate. His taking of Rokuro, a half-breed bastard, as his true son and heir was proof alone of that.

Sheeva's thoughts are suddenly interrupted by someone approaching her. It is the professor of the class, a fairly young adult man who has difficulty making eye contact with her, much like everyone else. She pauses in her shaping of the clay as he walks up, chewing on his nail.

"So, Sheeva, I---Erm, that is, I noticed you're doing something a little, uh, different today."

"Yes," she replies as she glares daggers at the mewling man. "I am making a water jug."

"Goo--Good, that's good, that's a good thing," he nods, forcing a smile. "It's just, I was, um, wondering..."

"What? Speak."

He steps back from her firmness, clearly worried about offending her. "Well, I thought that, perhaps, um---That you might enjoy more, ah, privacy, is all."

She slowly raises a brow. "Explain."

He holds up his hands, as if in defense. "I don't mean anything like, uh, moving you out of the class or anything, it's just, if you would prefer, I don't know, an isolated room perhaps for your work? Erm, with f-full access to all the materials, as usual, just... Away from everyone else."

Immediately her eyes narrow and the man is shaken. "I d-didn't mean that w-we want to get rid of you, of course, I meant only if YOU would prefer it, not that anyone else would, that is." He is visibly sweating and slightly trembling. "I--I--I--I mean, if you d-don't like the others, ah, looking or filming like they, um, tend to, or being afr-fraid of you..."

Sheeva closes her eyes and slowly sucks in a breath from her nostrils. To even speak to a coward like this makes her want to crack a skull open.

She continues to stare at him for a moment, each second making him more and more uncomfortable. Finally, she says, "No." She then returns to her pot.

"G-great! Fant-tastic, I mean, like I said we don't want you to leave b-but just wanted to make sure you're comfortable, hah, I'll just... I'll just get with the other students."

He quickly shuffles off, leaving Sheeva with a distasteful look on her face. But she discovers that she is nearly done, and ready to make the handle of the pot while also doing some additional details. She runs all of her fingers up and down the surface, adding some more water as she focuses on the next few steps.

Setting aside all other thoughts, Sheeva concentrates on completing her work on the jug. She creates a handle while giving the outside a thicker consistency with another layer of clay, which she gives a wavey, textured style to. When this is done, she gives it a simple finish, takes it to the kiln and and sets it inside.

Her work complete, she will retrieve it upon her next class session. Now comes the time to return to the island. She leaves the class without saying goodbye, walking through the hall and to the courtyard outside. This is where she usually activates the portal device, but she hestitates for a moment. She looks up into the sky and realizes that she is actually done a bit earlier than usual.

Perhaps she could remain in Earthrealm a bit longer... Then again, she is rather weary of this place and its people.

Finding little interest in civilization, she is instead more curious about the surrounding land and its wildlife. Stepping out of the town and heading off into the wilderness, ignoring any who stop and stare at her, Sheeva travels off and soon finds herself treading across the Australian landscape. It takes her a while to find anything interesting, but soon she is surrounded by lush forest and walking alongside a river. She's reminded of the Kuatan Jungle just south of her homeland, where she would sometimes run through as a child.

She glimpses occasional small animals and other creatures, but nothing amazingly dangerous, like a sucker-snake or a horned ape. What few larger animals she does see look intimidating in their own ways, but nothing that she feels she could fear. Most beasts of Outworld are unafraid to attack at a moment's notice, but the beasts of Earthrealm make way for one as they walk through the jungle. She finds little interest out here, and after a while, decides to leave.

That is, however, until she comes upon the corpse of a large bird. She kneels down and looks at the creature; it seems to have been killed not for sport, as nothing on the body was stripped, but there is a pilfered nest nearby. She can tell by the wound that it is not another animal that did this, for indeed another animal would have taken the body. No, this is the work of poaching. A trail leads her to a camp, which has been abandonned, but there is more evidence here that animals were being held in cages.

Sheeva places her four hands on her hips. Her understanding of the laws of this land is minute, but perhaps this warrants further investigation...

Holding up her lower left arm, she taps a hidden device on her forearm guard to activate a communication function. After a moment, someone else on the team answers: Fireseed. She quickly informs him of the current situation, and he relates the illegality of poaching, especially if the species is protected or endangered. After inquiring what her next move should be, he advises her to hold position. She does so for several minutes until a portal opens nearby and he walks though, dressed head to toe in his hunting gear. He approaches her and looks around at the camp before more closely inspecting it.

"They're not far off," he says, running his fingers along the ground. "Definitely poachers. Cassowary and other birds were here. There's a big market for their eggs."

Sheeva cracks her knuckles. "Do we hunt these hunters?"

He picks up a fragment of an eggshell and nods. "We do." Looking around, he finds their most recent trail and sniffs before putting his head near the ground. "Diesel. This way." He stands up and moves quickly in one direction, and she follows, running after him.

'Perhaps this day will not be such a waste after all,' she muses as they follow the trail of the poachers.

They come upon them in little under an hour. Fireseed, having anticipated where they were headed, took them to an elevated position at the top of a canyon they are going to be passing through. Sheeva lies in wait with the tracker as he sets up a sniping position, taking out his rifle and affixing a telescopic sight to it. He looks through for a few moments before saying, "They're here."

She looks in the direction and begins to see the lights of cars. They're driving in a small caravan down into the canyon.

"Optimal range soon," he mutters as he aims. "Your mission. Your call."

"I'll make the first move," she says, moving to walk towards the edge. "Fire after I stomp the one in front."

"You mean 'stop'," he says.

"No, I do not."

As they draw near, Sheeva waits for the right moment. When it comes, she squats and tenses her leg muscles before springing upwards, launching herself several times higher than any normal being can jump. She then rockets downwards, having timed the jump perfectly as she aims for the lead vehicle before landing on its hood. The result is cataclysmic for the car as she smashes its front half and engine in one single blow, crushing the metal beneath her bare feet. The back half of the car flips forwards, over her head, the metal twisting and breaking as it rolls off. The car, and the people inside of it, land nearby and skid along the ground.

The other cars in the convoy all skid to a stop, one of them crashing into another in the back. Their headlights shine on her as she rises from the wreckage, picking off some of the metal from her shoulder and tossing it aside. Almost immediately, the doors open and people point firearms at her, shouting threats.

That's when Fireseed comes into play. He shoots from his elevated position he begins to fire, which causes them to panic and shoot themselves. In the chaos, as the Native American sniper picks them off, they miss their shots on Sheeva as she charges forward, her feat tearing through the metal she was standing in.

Sheeva reaches for the nearest poacher and grabs the weapon out of his hand, tearing it from his grip. Taking it in her lower arms and bending it over her knee with one swift downward thrust, she grabs him with her upper arms and proceeds to swing him around like a flail. He shouts as she holds his leg tightly as he is bashed against two other poachers before she discards him, and his bent firearm, off to the side.

>>49010234
>>49010260

Spotting some of the wreckage nearby, she approaches it but not before a poacher leaps on her back. She begins to struggle to get him off as another one leaps forward and tackles her feet. Like a firmly rooted tree, she does not budge, but he holds tightly onto her leg as she continues to attempt to shake the first one off.

Above, Fireseed blasts the head of one of the drivers, preventing him from backing up and attempting to run Sheeva down. However, one of the poachers on the back reaches for a molotov cocktail and lights it, preparing to throw!

Sheeva sees the flaming cocktail coming towards her and braces herself. It explodes at her feet and quickly travels upwards, encompassing the two holding her back. They scream as the flames spread onto them, letting go and rolling off. Sheeva, naturally fire resistant, walks through the flames as her eyes burn bright red.

>>49010333

Approaching the truck, she grabs onto it with all four arms and lifts it up. The man in the back scrambles and shouts in surprise as he holds on tight, but before he can jump free, Sheeva roars in fury as she hurls it across the way, right into another truck. The man is crushed as the two vehicles collide, mashed into each other. Headlights flicker as the two vehicles roll away, skidding across the sandy floor of the canyon. Sheeva stands, breathing heavily as the two bodies of the other poachers burn behind her.

Just then, a shotgun blast narrowly misses her from behind. The last poacher, hiding amongst the rocks in a position Fireseed cannot aim at, shoots at her from behind his covered position. He aims again and fires as she rolls out of the way.

"Never brought home a four-armed bitch!" he shouts out as he aims again. "Gonna stuff you and mount you on a wall, freak!" He howls in delight as he shoots again.

Sheeva jumps up over the shot, landing on the rocks in front of him. He stumbles and falls back, desperately aiming the shotgun up again, but she uses a lower hand to swat it out it out of his grip.

Sheeva places all four hands on her hips as he backs up, tripping over a stone, before drawing out a large bowie knife and waving it around threateningly but ineffectually.

"You dumb bitch! We were on our way to market! The Black Dragon ain't gonna forgive ya, ya bloody four-armed good for nothin'---"

Tired of listening to him, Sheeva crouches and lunges forward, all four arms pointed out. Like a missile, she flies towards his stomach before blasting clean through. The man is torn in half as she flies through him, painting the nearby canyon wall with red. As his two halves fall down, Sheeva picks herself up and dusts herself off, discarding blood, sand and organs.

"Pathetic," she mutters. "These hunters were hardly any sport."

"He said Black Dragon," Fireseed calls out from behind. She turns to see him repelling down the canyon wall with a harness. He touches down and walks up. "We could have questioned him more if you hadn't torn him in half."

"What's done is done," she shrugs. "The criminals are dead."

Fireseed puts away his weapon and approaches her, his eyes fierce and narrow. "The Black Dragon is one of the groups we currently have almost no intel on. You stumbled upon one of their poaching rings, that was luck. What you did just now was stupid."

She faces him fully and fearlessly. "Do you mean to make something of it?"

He shakes his head. "You shokan; all you know how to do is destroy. No subtlety."

Fireseed turns around as he heads towards the animal cages in the rearmost vehicle. As he begins to open the cages and let the animals out, mostly dangerous and rare birds that attempt to peck and claw at him, Sheeva does the same, picking up the birds and letting them out. "And just what do you know of the shokan? Clearly nothing, if you say that all they do is destroy."

"I don't see you doing anything else," he mutters.

"Are you attempting to pick a fight, now that we are victorious?" she asks as the last of the animals are released. "We were successful in defeating them."

"We killed them, sure. Anyone could have done that. A professional would have taken at least one alive for interrogation, but you just couldn't help but tear him in half, could you?"

"I do not care for your opinions on my methods. They are dead because they were weak. They will no longer commit crimes because we have stopped them. As little of a fight as they offered, we still defeated them."

Fireseed faces her, crossing his arms and leaning against the back of the truck. "That's not how we do things. These guys were nothing; mooks. They could've led us to the next link in the chain, maybe even to Kabal."

"They'll surface eventually. When their leader does see fit to rear his burnt face, our team will be ready."

"Yes, let your enemy decide when and where the battle takes place," he mutters. He looks up at her. "You know, I didn't get to say this before, but when you tried to punch Sam? It was the funniest damn thing I'd ever seen."

Sheeva's face turns to one of insulted pride very quickly. "Now you purposefully insult me? Curb your tongue before I teach it some respect." She slams two fists into her palms.

"You wouldn't be the first shokan to try," he mutters, standing straight up and unfolding his arms.

They stare at each other in a standoff.

"I'll not let this stain on my honor go unanswered!" She again slams her fists together. "Prepare yourself!"

He holds up his knife in front of his eyes as he stares at her. "You and your honor... It's a bad joke. What do you think the dead think about your honor, Sheeva? You think your ancestors are following you around and judging your every move?"

Sheeva's hands burn brightly as she claps them in front of her, creating a fiery shockwave. Fireseed, his arms already up, blocks the attack and shields his eyes, but the force of the blast pushes him back a few feet. He looks up from his arms as the hair on them smokes slightly, gritting his teeth.

>>49011392

Dashing forward, Sheeva is on him in an instant. She knows that he is skilled with ranged combat, but less so with close-quarters fighting. She knows well that he came close in the test trials against her, but not nearly so now taht she is fighting for real. A shokan's greatest advantage is its strength and skill in grappling, and she uses it to great effect as she grabs him with all four arms before throwing him aside, into a bush. Twigs snap as he rolls through it, but then he gets back up and charges at her with his knife.

>>49011399

Sheeva holds up her upper left arm and allows the knife to hit her, trusting in her solid flesh to keep the blade at bay. He draws blood as he slices her arm, but this opens him up to attack. She grabs him with her lower arms and lifts him off his feet before bringing her upper fists down on his face and chest in a raining series of blows. She pummels him for a bit before tossing him away again.

As she chucks him across the way, she sneers. Placing her hands on her hips and folding two of them in front of her, she says, "You told us your tale the night of the fireplace on the beach. Am I supposed to believe you hunted for several years in Outworld's jungles when I am faced with skill such as this? Perhaps you are not so fearsome after all."

He pushes himself back up to a standing position and glares at her from beneath his headband. She walks towards him. "Then again, perhaps you truly are green," she again calls his experience into question. "But soon you will be red."

Fireseed then throws his knife at her, but she easily catches it in one hand. This proves to be a ruse, however, when he thren reaches behind him and takes out a bolas from his belt. He throws it around her feet and the electrodes within the heads deliver a shock to her, causing her to drop the knife as she is stunned. Fireseed smirks as he then tackles her to the ground, slamming an elbow in her face before attempting to get her into a grapple.

>>49011722

This proves to be a bad choice against a shokan, however, as Sheeva's lower arms wrap around his waist. She slams her upper arms onto the ground and forces them both back up while she still holds onto him. Now, from this new position, she grabs him with all four arms and bends backwards, delivering a massive suplex by slamming his head onto the sandy ground. He grunts as she lets go, standing straight up and walking away a few paces as she kicks off the burnt-out bolas.

>>49011723

She seems him attempting to get back up out of the corner of her eye and prepares a fireball in one hand. She turns and whips it at him, but he dodges it---which she had anticipated. As he rolls off to the side, she brings up a leg and then brings it down upon his head, holding him in place.

>>49011752

She holds him there for a moment before bringing up her foot again and stomping on the ground near him, creating a small shockwave that launches him upwards. She grabs him out of the air by the neck and holds him aloft, ready to deliver a series of punches to him.

Just then, they both hear a noise: a great whooshing sound, like the turbines of a jet engine. A set of lights are shined down upon them as some great mechnical vehicle vertically lands nearby. Sheeva holds up a hand to shield her eyes from the light as it touches onto the ground. With the light in her face, she can barely make it out, but it appears to be... in the shape of a dragon.

The body of the vehicle opens up as an exit ramp lowers, and someone walks down and into the light. Sheeva watches as the silhouette turns into Kaito, who doesn't appear pleased with what he's stumbled upon. He places his hands on his hips as he looks at the two of them, noting both of their damage and bloodied states.

"Drop him, Sheeva."

She does so and he lands on his feet, reaching up to rub his neck. They both look at Kaito as he points his thumb back. "Both of you, in the dragon jet, now."

Minutes later, they're in the air again, taking off. This is the first time Sheeva has been inside one of these contraptions; she saw the hanger being built on the island, but knew not what these were for. As it cuts across the skies at sonic speeds, she understands why.

Both Fireseed and Sheeva are made to strap in next to each other as Kaito sits across from them, similarly buckled up.

"I tracked you both here and thought I'd take these new things out for a spin," he explains. "But I have to admit, I didn't think I'd stumble upon this." He openly wears a disappointed look on his face as his eyes drift from one to the other. "So, who's going to talk first?"

Sheeva is silent as she allows Fireseed to speak. He may be disrespectful, but he is not dishonest; he lays it out pretty much exactly as it happened. Kaito listens to him talk about how Sheeva called him up, he deployed to her location and helped her track down and eliminate the hostile poachers. Their Black Dragon connection is something he focuses on briefly before he gets into why they fought. He doesn't skip a detail.

When he's done, concluding with the moment Kaito showed up, the elementalist looks at Sheeva and asks, "Is this all true?" She nods and he lets out a sigh. "You know, you two are among the oldest and most experienced people on the team. Of everyone, you two were the last ones I would have expected to start the first genuine fight. I thought two of the younger kids might have a go at it; I was betting on Frost, personally. But this..." He shakes his head and mutters, "We think we've come so far..."

"He insulted me and called my honor into question. He has no respect."

"Since day one with you, Sheeva, it's been about your honor. You let him goad you into throwing the first punch! The moment you did that, you set aside your honor to the team to worry about your own pride. And you, Joshua---don't think I've forgotten about you. I don't know what your problem is with Sheeva, but I'm not going to let it interfere with the team, understood?"

They are both silent as Kaito straightens up. "Now, look. I know we have some pretty strong personalities on the team. Conflict is bound to happen, but what you two did is just childish. Fireseed, you had a point---Sheeva could have held back. Sheeva, there's nothing wrong with having pride and honor, but you can't let people just insult you and make you rush into a potential trap. That's something any enemy could exploit. I read in Cassie's report of your trip to that strange realm that you refused to retreat against overwhelming odds until the team came and forced you to."
>>
>>49012591

"I did not run," Sheeva insists. "I was simply postponing the battle for another time while I caught my breath."

"Regardless, it's dangerous behaviour. You both acted out of line today. Fireseed, when you got the call, you should have alerted the rest of the team instead of just leaving by yourself. It's almost like you wanted this conflict to happen and end up this way."

He is silent as he stares off to the side for a bit.

Kaito leans forward. "Now, I'm not going to make you two apologize to each other. Not yet. You're both going to get some space and keep away from each other until you cool down. Then I'm going to want you both to work on this, work on fighting together instead of fighting each other. Understood?"

Sheeva is the first to speak. "I will when he apologizes."

"I have nothing to apologize for," he mutters.

Before Sheeva can speak, Kaito holds up a hand. "Stop, stop, just stop. These are the kinds of responses I get from warriors? Not even just warriors, but adults?" He sits back up again. "We'll be on base soon. I'm going to talk to each of you individually tomorrow, after you've had a chance to rest up and wash the blood off. If you're going to be on this team, if you're going to act like New Defenders, this shit isn't gonna fly. I thought I'd have to drag some of the others around by the ears before I did for you two, but if I have to play the mean mother, that's just what I'll do. And if you'd rather settle this with fists, I'll allow that as well. But not until I say so."

The rest of the ride is silent. When the dragon jet flies through its portal and returns to base, landing in the newly-built hanger bay, the two of them silently disembark and head to their rooms. Once inside, Sheeva quietly discards her red suit and showers in silent frustration.

Sheeva decides to work out some of her frustration in the gym. She pauses briefly to open up a drawer of clothing. This Earthrealm-style workout clothing is something she still is not used to; she slips her legs through the tight fabric of the bottoms before sliding on the top. They do not have four-armed tops for her, so she simply wears the same manner of top that someone like Cassie or any other normal human would wear, and consequently her lower arms feel a bit more free.

She does have to admit, though, she likes the look. Grabbing a towel, she walks over to the gym and finds three other teammates inside: Cao, Frost and Ling.

Frost is holding Ling's feet as she performs sit-ups; those two always seem to be either together or helping each other work out. Frost motivates and encourages her to do more as the daughter of Lao keeps her hands locked behind her head, sitting up and smiling as the cryomancer counts. Nearby, Cao is on a treadmill, running at a very fast speed as the black belt whirs beneath him. Sheeva enters and looks around, attempting to decide what to do.

While she desires to do some initial weight training, she feels a bit more strongly about punching something right now, to get some of the frustration out.

Sheeva moves from the gym into the training center. Tossing the towel onto a bench, she walks into the center of the room, she cracks her knuckles. Across the room, a set of blue eyes light up and a robotic figure walks out meet her. The machine, the training android, stands in front of her. She folds her arms as she looks upon the glorified punching bag that Special Forces invested too much money to count in. Plus, given her recent experience in fighting machines in Rellim Ohcanep, she is already predisposed to not particularly like this invention.

The machine speaks. "Greetings. Please establish training perameters."

The machine at this difficulty level catches her off-guard initially with its speed. It spins and kicks her in the jaw before turning its body in an impossible manner as its waist rotates to punch her in the gut. Sheeva falls back and defends herself from the sudden surge of attacks, blocking metal fists and feet as it attacks from unpredictable angles and with impossible body movements. As the android is fully modular in body, it can bend its limbs in ways that normal bodies cannot, from snapping its elbows backwards to catch a fist or turning its waist or head to maintain its forward-attacking momentum.

>>49013680

But eventually, Sheeva adapts. She fights back by blocking and counterattacking. Though the machine is set at a hard difficulty and has kombat manuever programmed to make it emulate some of the best fighters in its database, Sheeva is undeterred. She took her beating, now it's time to dish one out. She slams two fists against its chest and knocks it back before grabbing it and smashing it against the walls. The machine lashes out but Sheeva has its number now; she's in the battle, blood pumping and boiling. She smiles, relishing this experience and reveling in it as she throws the android onto the ground before stomping it into the floor. Soon enough it is too damaged to continue; it's internal life-bar is depleted and it shuts down to prevent itself from being harmed further.

Sheeva leaves the battered machine on the floor and goes to grab her towel, wiping off blood, sweat and oil from her skin.

Several minutes later, after a drink of water, Sheeva is now doing a more regular and repetition-driven workout to bring down her adrenaline while also calming her mind after that vigorous combat session. With her lower arms, she pushes herself off the ground, all while curling weights with her upper arms. It is an impressive display, that much can be said, as everyone else pauses when they catch sight of it. Frost and Ling both observe her form with a bit of jealousy while Cao pauses in his running to chat with Takeda, both young men openly staring at the shokan.

She doesn't mind; let them stare. She focuses on her breathing as she curls her arms while pushing up and down. It's a burn, but a good kind of burn.

She does several sets before setting down the weights and standing back up to stretch. Then, as she towels off some sweat from her forehead, she moves the cloth from her eyes to see Takeda approaching with a fresh water bottle. He offers it to her with an open palm, saying, "Here, you look like you could use it."

There is little hesitation as she grabs it, opening it and downing it all in what seems like one swig. Takeda cooly leans up against a set of pull-up bars as he says, "I gotta say, Sheeva, I admire your form. Your workout form, that is. You by any chance looking for a partner? I mean like a spotter? I'd love to work up a sweat with you." He gives her a flirty smile as Ling and Frost both stop their respective workouts upon hearing him.

Sheeva cocks a brow as Cao starts to slowly back away; Takeda is his friend, but not even he could stop her if she were to react negatively to his words.

Sheeva's brow slowly lowers as a smile creeps on her face. "Would you, now?" He doesn't back down and Sheeva finds herself a bit intrigued by the notion of him trying to work on her level. 'Perhaps this will serve as a bit of amusement before the night is through,' she thinks. She flexes a single arm in front of him and says, "Do you think you could possibly handle the might of a shokan's training?"

Takeda's grin turns a bit cocky as he tilts his head. "I think I could take it."

"Lesser men have been broken by less," she says. "Perhaps it would be best for you to stick with the children's weights."

"You're not afraid that I'll show you up or surprise you, are you?" he asks, maintaining his calm and cool stance. "I might just be what you least expect."

She chuckles at how foolishly bold he is attempting to be, but thus far she is still curious as to how far he's going to take this. She wonders if Cao put him up to his in some manner... or if he's just naturally attempting to become closer to her. In all this time she's been at this base, this is the first time he has approached her in the gym, though she has often noticed him staring. Then again, many often do; she's quite a sight. While she hasn't intentionally avoided others on the team, she rarely approaches them casually, so to have one of them finally attempt to is... refreshing, in a way. Perhaps she merely appreciates the attention.

It's curious, but in a way, his foolhardiness also reminds her a bit of Kaito from around the days of the older tournaments, back when they first met, before duty, responsibility and training tempered him into the leader he is today. It seems that Takeda takes after him in more than a few ways, no doubt due to the adoration the young Shirai Ryu has for the elementalist.

Frost, Ling and Cao all silently watch as they pretend to continue their own workouts as Sheeva walks around towards the weightlifting section. Takeda follows, head held high and confident, as they near the squat rack. With one hand each, Sheeva picks up four weights and slides them onto the bar at both ends. She does have to admit, one thing the earthrealmers have truly advanced in that all shokan could benefit from is their study of fitness and the design of their equipment. Most shokan train by lifting rocks, an imprecise yet effective method, but there is something pleasing about the precise nature of how the humans have mastered the science of bodybuilding.

She sets such thoughts aside as Takeda moves to stand under the bar, reaching up to grab it with his hands as it rests on his shoulders. With a smile and a deep breath, he pushes it up and then squats down with the weight on his back. When he is done, he pushes up and returns to the standing position. "Not so bad," he smiles.

"One hundred reps is my minium," Sheeva says, still amused. "Then we move onto the next one."

Takeda's eyes bulge slightly as he hears the number, but grits his teeth and squats again. Sheeva keeps count as he pushes himself, sweat covering his body. When he reaches fifty, however, she walks away and picks up two lengths of chain. He watches as she walks over and hooks them around both sides of the bar. "What?!" he gasps.

"When I reach the halfway point, I add more weight," she explains. "What's the matter? Having second thoughts?"

His neck strains and he closes his eyes as he squats again. "Nope...!" He seems determined to keep going.

Sheeva casually drinks another watter bottle as Takeda pushes onwards. Nearby, Cao hangs by his legs around a metal bar, pausing in his hanging situps. "You know, if you want to kill him Sheeva, there are easier ways."

"I don't doubt that, Kahnzedah," she says, using the thief's new title. She may not hold him in very high regard, but she's nothing if not formal. She looks back down at Takeda struggling around the sixty-five mark. "Do you need to stop?"

"Ah... Nah!" he grunts. He pushes himself and reaches seventy, then seventy-five, eventually making it to eighty. He takes a moment to breathe, muttering something to himself. "Come on, come on, come on!" She's already exceeded his standard weight class, but still he continues, managing to make it to eighty-three and still going.

Sheeva watches him with some curiosity as he reaches ninety. On the opposite end of the gym, Ling and Frost have stopped their own workouts and are done for the evening, but stick around to watch what happens. The Shirai Ryu's face twists as he knocks out two more, then slows down, making it to ninety-three, before exploding upwards with three more. Now on the latter half of ninety, he pushes himself with each one, taking his time. Ninety-seven... Ninety-eight... Ninety-nine...

He hesitates on the very last one, taking a second to look up into her eyes, possibly re-affirming something to himself before he pushes down and back up, making it to one-hundred.

Sheeva is about to congratulate him when he suddenly squats and does one more, pushing back up to make one-oh-one. He then sets the bar back on the hooks and nearly collapses, though she reaches out with one hand to push on his chest and prop him up.

"I think that is enough for you," she says as she slips off the weights and chains with her other hands.

As he tries to stumble away, he says, "See? Told you... I could... take it..."

She slaps him once on the back, a light tap but enough to knock him down.

Reaching down with one hand, she grabs him by the collar and hoists him upwards back onto his feet, steadying him. "You met your goal. That is worthy of praise."

He looks up and manages a weak smile. "Yeah... Haha... So, how about it? Me being a workout partner, I mean?" He tries to compose himself, but can still barely stand.

'Still pushing it?' she thinks. "I think you have a ways to go." She lets go and grabs her towel as she walks towards the female showers.

As Cao steps up to help Takeda stand, the young ninja calls out, "That's not a no, right? Right, Sheeva?"

She doesn't reply as she enters and closes the door behind her. Several minutes later, after taking a quick but thorough cleansing, Sheeva leaves the gym through the side entrance and walks outside, letting the ocean breeze wash over her for a bit. She also notices that, further up the beach, she's not the only one finishing a workout, as Cassie Cage is running with Samantha Stryker. The younger Cage has taken an active hand in personally training her ever since her powers were revealed through Sheeva's (unwilling) attempts to destroy her.

The shokan pauses for a moment as she watches them running. She has kept her distance from Sam ever since, mostly out of pride, except for the time they were trapped in that strange realm. Outside of battle, however, she hasn't spoken to the youth. She observes them now as Cassie keeps pace with the slower runner, encouraging her and working her as they run up and down the beach. Sam pushes herself; her limits are nowhere near as high as the others on the team, but it is a welcome sight, she must admit, that the one she had always considered a weakling is at least dedicated to improving herself.

As they stop running and take a break, Sheeva decides to approach them. Though she considered the blonde girl to be a flashy nuisance and the brunette to be a weakling, the more reasonable part of her tells her that she should start branching out a bit. Cassie sees her coming first and tilts her sunglasses down as she looks at the shokan's attire. "Hey, Sheeva... What's up?" she asks as Sam turns and notices her. The policewoman swallows a sudden nervous lump as she looks up at her.

Sheeva, towering over them and with her towel around her shoulders, speaks. "I was just finishing some work of my own when I noticed yours." She looks at Sam specifically and says, "It is commendable that you are dedicated to bettering yourself. My understanding of your culture over the course of my class has shown me how easily you humans keep yourselves from dedicated work."

Cassie jumps in before Sam can reply. "Yeah! So, how are those pottery classes going, anyway?"

"They are good," she replies. She doesn't elaborate, leading to a slightly awkward silence.

The Cage girl coughs into her hand. "Right, so, anyway... Sheeva, you're the strongest on our team, I mean nobody can question that. I was wondering if you'd like to fight a few times, maybe make it a regular thing. I know we have the training room but... Well, all three of us were in robot-land and I'm not really too interested in fighting another one."

Sheeva folds her arms. "I trust you understand that when I do true battle, I rarely hold back."

Cassie smiles. "Perfect! I wouldn't want you to. I want the full experience of fighting a shokan, just like dear old dad, right?"

She looks now at Sam. "And you?"

"Uh... S-sure?"

Sheeva nods. "Very well, but at a later date. I must retire. Goodnight."

"It's a date, girlfriend!" Cassie calls out as she walks away, making Sheeva roll her eyes.

Sheeva retires to her room. It is now fully night upon the island, and most of the team is already asleep. Sheeva sets her things aside and strips, stretching in the center of her room, going through a bit of a nightly ritual of flexing various muscles before sitting down and closing her eyes to think. She has dealt with quite a few things on this day, namely human issues, from the class to the poachers to Fireseed to the other members of the team, and she finds herself somewhat weary of these matters. Sheeva abhors lying in all forms, especially to herself, and it would be lying if she said she was not missing home and the simpler life of the shokan.

She has nothing but respect for Duroc, his son Rokuro, and the princess Jagara. They are her family, even if she is only related to most of them through being a cousin. As she meditates, she allows herself a bit of rare introspection brought about by this latest change in her life, living with the New Defenders and attempting to get along with them, to share their values and lifestyle. She has the blessing of King Duroc as his appointed champion and the admiration of the shokan people, but what was the cost? Most of her family, apart from her mother, remained loyal to Gorbak and fought for him in the war. Prior to becoming champion, she had many suitors competing for her affection as well. But since earning her title, they have ceased. At first she was rather relieved that her title had dissuaded male shokan suitors, but as time has gone on, she admits to herself that she misses part of that attention. Men competing with each other and against her was a form of flattery, even if she always defeated them. It made her feel desired and desirable.

Is this, then, the root of her recent unease? Without other shokan around her, separated from her culture, the lack of a companion to spend time with is frightfully apparent to her. Someone to speak with, to share closer moments with, to love...
>>
>>49021611

It is true that she rarely considered any male attention before her rise, for she had always adhered to the old way---that any man who wished to claim her must defeat her in battle beforehand, and she always came out on top, unsatisfied and alone. Being the strongest has kept her from finding a companion, and now her new title is keeping anyone from stepping forth to challenge her. Perhaps they fear earning the ire of King Duroc, or they do not believe they could defeat his appointed champion. And now she is no longer in Kuatan, where the custom is tradition. Now she is amongst others, who hold different traditions of courtship. Whatever the reason, Sheeva finds herself lonely, heightened by her separation from home and family.

Sheeva finds this train of thought to be unpleasant, and tries to distract herself with other things, such as her pottery class. But even that eventually leads her back to thinking about her present situation and the fact that she is no longer surrounded by other shokan. She could always return to her home, or leave the team, but it would not feel quite right to her to do so. Perhaps she should put in for what the military personnel of the team refer to as "leave" to return to her home for a short period of time, but surely she can live without them for a time. Sheeva does not see herself as some young child who cannot be away from home for extended periods of time; like many things, this is a result of her pride, and her pride is too great to allow her to give up so easily on trying to be a member of this team. The more she spends time with her own people, the less she does here.

But still, she thinks about her lack of a true companion. During the reigns of Shao Kahn and King Gorbak, it was not unheard of for a shokan to take a member of another race, perhaps an outworlder or an edenian, as a concubine. But Duroc saw Rokuro's mother as more than just a slave; he loved her. It is that very same compassion that is driving small changes in shokan society, including the acceptance of half-breeds. Sheeva is still not certain if she agrees with the notion. She is proud of her royal draco lineage and always felt that do breed outside of it would be akin to polluting it. But is it so?

She can't deny that, for a time, she considered taking a mate in Kaito. The human had beaten her once in battle, though circumstances were quite different at the time. She herself was exhausted and not at her peak, but his power was greater than hers at the time, and may still be so today. She begrudgingly agreed to be his traveling companion and soon found herself fighting against Shao Kahn, supporting the Defenders of the Realm and going on to fight for Duroc's claim to the throne. When Kaito returned after slumbering for twenty years, she was actually very elated to see him, glad for her old friend to once more be amongst the living.

But he had chosen another path: Mileena. Sheeva respected him far too much to challenge her for him, though she had considered it, and she still had reservations about seeking a non-shokan as a mate. It cannot be wrong to seek a strong mate, she reasons. But need that strong mate come solely from the shokan?

After a moment, Sheeva takes a deep breath and opens her eyes. These thoughts are too complex for her to immediately decide what to do in the span of a single evening, and so she sets them aside for now, focusing on maintaining strength in herself. She is strong, proud and self-assured; she can continue to be so for the time being. Perhaps, given what she has been through recently, it would not hurt to attempt to open up more to others on the team, or at least appear to be more approachable. But for now, she will not seek a companion. Friends would be a better thing to find before, and she must work harder to make herself more open to working with them.

If something more comes from that... Well, she will see. But she will not allow her loneliness to rule her; she will rule herself.

She climbs into her bed, the largest one on base, and wraps herself in the comfortable sheets she brought with her from Kuatan, eventually closing her eyes and drifing off to sleep.

It is nearly five in the morning when the alarm goes off. Sheeva shoots out of bed as a red light flashes with a ringing sound. She looks up at it with wide eyes, remembering well what she was briefed on in regards to it. The New Defenders are deploying for a mission.

She leaps out of bed and quickly dresses, donning her champion's battle armor. For a shokan, armor is little more than ceremonial, but important. She takes black facepaint and quickly spreads it across her eyes before pulling her hair back and tying it down. She rises and slides on her gauntlets and spiked shoulder pads along with some other pieces of armor before leaving her room. The others are similarly getting ready, running and shouting to the assembly area.

Sheeva and the others head into the briefing room, where Kaito, Johnny and Sonya await. Behind them is a large screen, displaying red circles on a map. Once everyone is inside, Kaito looks at them and begins. "Little over twenty minutes ago, we picked up energy fluctuations in New York City. Portals opening there. Ever since the invasion, it’s been a hot spot of inter-realm activity, but it was always randomized; errant portal storms and what have you. It’s what’s kept the city from being rebuilt, but this is different, it’s deliberate. Initial recon hasn’t shown us anything, because some kind of strange fog is now covering the area. We suspect a sorcerer may be involved, but we can’t be sure. We’re being sent in to investigate.”

Sheeva looks over at Cassie as she steps up to ask, "Do we have thermal imaging? Any other way to get an idea of the number of potential hostiles?"

General Cage answers her question. "We tried that, but the fog is warm. It's obscuring any attempts at infrared visualization."

Jacqui looks at the map. "Is the fog spreading?"

"No, but that might change," Kaito says. "Where it's concentrated, however, gives us concern. Times Square."

Kung Jin comes to the conclusion immediately. "That's where Shao Kahn's citadel appeared during the invasion, where the most destruction occurred. We don't think it might have something to do with Shao Kahn returning, do we?"

A few eyes stray over to Cao, who holds up his hands. "Hey, don't look at me, I tore the guy's soul in half. I don't think he's coming back."

"Perhaps it's some kind of Netherrealm attack," Fox suggests. Vapor and Tundra exchange worried looks as Frost cups her chin and thinks.

Now Sheeva speaks. "What sorcerers do we know who can create such portals? Quan Chi, Havik? Shang Tsung?"

"I think we can rule him out," Ling says with a smirk. "It's past his bed time."

Kaito puts his hands on the table in front of him. "We can speculate for hours on end, but this kind of thing is exactly why we're here. We're going to take the dragon jets into the city in two teams; I'll lead one team that will approach from the north. Fireseed, you're leading the second team coming from the south. If we push something your way, take it out, but otherwise you're ranged support and backup." He looks at Sheeva specifically and adds, "Sheeva, I want you with Fireseed."

She knows this is due to their earlier fight, and he wants to see how they react.

Sheeva nods and accepts his orders. With the information out of the way and everyone debriefed, they head towards the hanger bay where the technicians are prepping the jets. The pilots climb into the cockpits as the two teams split off into two groups. Sheeva's squad consists of Fireseed, Kung Jin, Kung Ling, Frost, Sam and Cassie. After climbing into the main bay of the jet and strapping into a seat, the hanger is cleared as the jets vertically take off and blast into the sky.

Everyone is silent and holding on tightly as the jets part and use their internal portal generators to create individual vortexes that they fly through, transporting to Earthrealm. Their jet approaches New York from the south, setting course towards the center of the blasted city. Ever since the invasion, it has been defended by a massive wall, built to keep people out as much as it is to keep the things inside from leaving. It is manned constantly by the US military, but now the jet flies over the wall and lands on a wide street.

Everyone immedaitely disembarks as the jet's pilot switches the vehicle into a passive mode. It will remain here for evac and anything else the team may need.

Fireseed takes point as they look around at the foggy streets. New York City is a ruined ghost town, but with this fog it truly now takes on an otherworldly tone. Everyone has their weapons or fists at the ready as they follow him north, past wrecked cars and buldings.

Sheeva has not been here since the great battle twenty years ago, when the citadel was destroyed and the invasion halted. Not much has changed, apart from the nature growing wild and having overtaken much of the wreckage, with large collections of vines, ferns and other plants growing on the walls and streets.

The further north Sheeva's group travels, the thicker the fog seems to grow. There is no wind nor any other sounds, adding to the ghostly like feeling that has taken the streets.

Kung Jin has his eyes peeled, his bow out and at the ready. "I don't like the look of this," he says.

Cassie, walking alongside him, says, "No, no, no, it's, 'I have a baaad feeling about this.' That's how you do it."

"Come on, Cage, right now?" he rolls his eyes.

"Quiet," Fireseed orders them as he comes to a stop. He crouches down, his eyes scanning across the thick fog. They all pause when they hear noises coming from up ahead, strange calls like animal grunts and other odd things. They all slowly begin to move closer, now much more cautiously.

Suddenly, across their communicators, they hear, "CONTACT!" as the other team is attacked. Almost immediately, shapes in the fog up ahead begin to form, humanoid in nature. They all look on as the figures, running at a springing speed, howl and charge at them, leaping over debris and wreckage as they come.

"Oni!" Jin shouts, firing an arrow into one's chest. The monstrous figures goes down, twitching on the ground, but three more take its place.

"Fire at will!" Fireseed commands, and they all move to attack!

Seeing the oncoming horde of enemies, Sheeva smiles and charges forward herself, knocking an old vehicle out of the way. A group of four of them see her and rush towards her, but she meets their charge with a flying missle-tackle. She barrels through them, knocking them all down and crushing one of them with her knees as she thrusts herself forward. Like bowling pins, they all fall before she gets back up.

>>49024096

One of the beasts leaps upon her leg, opening its trapjaw-like mouth inhumanly wide before slamming it down on her leg. She shouts and tries to shake him off while the rest of her squad engages the oncoming horde.

>>49024124

After kicking him off into another group, Sheeva's hands turn fiery red and she throws a massive fireball at them. It utterly destroys two of them as it flies by before exploding in the main group, sending several of them flying up into the air, burning as they land. The remainder scatter from the explosion, giving her squad a chance to advance and finish off a few of them.

>>49024129
>>49024146

She looks up the street and sees more of them coming. She quickly throws another fireball, but with only one hand, taking out the lead oni. The remainder continue to charge ahead.

"Wave two, incoming!" Cassie says as she shoots one in the skull.

The oni snaps its mouth at her viciously but she gives a look of disgust as she tears off its arms and drops it to the ground. Planting a foot on its chest, she grabs his legs and then tears them off as well, now holding a limb in each hand.

>>49024317
>>49024319

Wielding the four limbs like clubs, Sheeva begins to bash and beat her way through the horde, fighting off the oni as she spins and stomps. When one nears her, she turns and brings two of the limb-clubs up and smashes its chin as she leaps upwards.

>>49024358

Discarding all four clubs, Sheeva sees another group of the oni and leaps up into the air, intent on stomping them, but she doesn't come back down! A flying oni, with large leathery wings, swoops down and grabs her from behind, carrying her off and away from the squad. She struggles as the monster claws at her back and bites her shoulder!

Before she can grapple it, perhaps pin it or tear off its wings, the oni lets go of her. Sheeva falls and lands atop an old bus, falling through the roof and inside of it. A moment later, she gets up and tears her way out, looking up and down the street. Her squad is nearby; she can hear their gunfire. She prepares to jump back to them.

>>49024638

Just then, the oni returns! It swoops down upon her and knocks her to the ground, snapping its jaws in her face. Sheeva shouts as she reaches up and gets two hands around its neck before giving it a sharp, snapping twist. The monster dies instantly and falls over.

Sheeva gets up, preparing to do as she did before, only now she hears something else: the buzzing of flies. A terrible stench reaches her nostils and she turns to behold her new opponent, one she has seen before.

"Drahmin..." she mutters. "I should have known you would be involved in this, with your stinking vermin species here in the streets."

The oni warrior stands in the center of the street, staring at her from beneath his bright green mask. The dark eyes of the oni say nothing, and neither does he, as he slowly approaches her. His skinless form, host to dozens of flies that buzz about his person, walks across the broken glass of a nearby window as his right arm, contained within a massive iron club, slowly rises upwards.

"Prepare to die, Sheeva," he breathes. "But do not worry, death is only the beginning. My master will be most pleased when I bring him your corpse!"

He charges at her and leaps up into the air, ready to bring the club down upon her head!

Sheeva immediately charges at the oni, leaping at him and attempting to tackle him down. But before her eyes he vanishes in a burst of flame, appearing behind her! He grabs her leg as she flies through where he was, yanking back on her and stopping her mid-air.

>>49024775

As she turns around, he swings the club down onto her. She brings up all four arms and blocks it, but is amazed to learn that his strength nearly rivals her own! She pushes up with all of her limbs, but he matches her strength.

His eyes burn brightly behind his mask, flames emerging from the dark eye holes. "You have no idea the depths of my new power! I have been reborn in glorious fire!"

"Then show me!"

>>49024793

She shouts as she thrusts the club to the side before grabbing him with her lower arms. Much like she did when she fought with Fireseed yesterday, she uses her upper arms to slam herself back up to her feet before pummeling Drahmin. She smashes her fists against his face, but finds his mask to be unable to be removed, as though it is fused to his skin.

Turning, she tosses him into a department store through a cracked window.

>>49024794

She walks towards the remaining half of the bus that she tore up earlier and grabs onto it, lifting it upwards. As Drahmin leaps from the store, she hurls it at him, smashing him with it! The bus crashes against the front of the building, caving in the entranceway.

Sheeva dusts off her four hands before walking away. She stops when a burst of flames appears in front of her, Drahmin teleporting out of the crushed spot. He raises his club again and swings it at her head!

'Where did this new power come from?' she thinks as she blocks the attack. "Who commands you now, brute? Who summoned us to this city?"

"DIE!" is all he replies with, attacking her again and again with the club.

Sheeva attempts to block his club again, but he breaks through her defense and smashes her across the face. He then does it again, this time with an upward swing that knocks her onto her back.

Drahmin advances towards her as he holds up his club. "It's ended, Sheeva!"

>>49025027

As he smashes the club downwards, all he hits is concrete. Sheeva had rolled back and is now on her feet again, whereupon she bends her legs and launches up into the sky before landing on the surprised oni and stomping him into the ground. She stands atop him as she prepares to grab him to deliver another pounding.

Just then, however, a fiery and sparking blast hits her in the back, making her stumble off of Drahmin. She turns around to behold the resurrected Baraka advancing up the street with a host of tarkatan warriors. "Baraka!" she shouts as she grits her teeth in fury. "You should have stayed dead!"

"It didn't suit me," he growls. Drahmin gets up to his feet and stands alongside him.

"So, the oni and the tarkatan dogs are in this together, are they?" Sheeva says.

"And more," Baraka chuckles. "There is more going on here than you can know, pitiful Sheeva!"

"And now you will die!" Drahmin declares.

As they both charge at her, with the remaining tarkatans lingering behind, suddenly a lithe warrior jumps in front of Sheeva: Kung Ling. She aims her qiang at them and extends it, piercing Drahmin's chest. She then uses it like a lever to knock him into Baraka.

"Sorry," she says to Sheeva as she returns the spear to its normal size, "but you looked a bit outnumbered."

"That's why we're here!" Kung Jin says, running up and shooting at one of the tarkatans, hitting him in the forehead with an arrow.

Sheeva cracks her knuckles. She wasn't afraid to face these foes alone, but assistance from the Kung Cousins is appreciated.

As Baraka pushes Drahmin off of him, Sheeva charges past Kung Ling and up to him. He sees her coming and shoots out his arm-blades, demonic and spiked mutations of the tarkatan form and meets her charge.

Sheeva grabs the arm-blades and holds onto them tightly, planning on snapping them off, but when she does they begin to glow hot like burning coals. She recoils from the sudden heat as his blades burst into flame before he slices the air in front of him, ceating a burning cross that flies towards her and knocks her down. She realizes this is no ordinary flame, but hellfire he now wields!

Baraka laughs as he holds his burning blades up high, intending to impale her upon them.

>>49025317

Sheeva plants her hands on the ground and brings up her feet, kicking him away. Baraka flies back into the half of the bus that she didn't throw earlier, crushing it slightly.

Back on her feet once more, she looks at Drahmin as he battles Kung Ling, smashing his club against her spear. The daughter of Lao ducks under his swing and plants the head of her weapon into the ground, pulls back on the shaft and lets go, allowing it to spring into his masked face. He stumbles backwards, holding his mask in pain.

>>49025328

Sheeva then leaps up and lans on him, adding an extra second jump for good measure. Drahmin then vanishes in flames, teleporting away to safety.

>>49025343

A growl draws her attention to nearby, where Baraka tears his way out of the bus. He pushes aside one of his tarkatan grunts as Kung Jin throws his chakram at him, but he deflects it aside with his arm-blade. He stomps across the street towards Sheeva as he shouts and tries to stab her again.

Sheeva dodges his attack and manages to grab him by the arm, but he wrestles it out of her grip, slicing her lower left as he does. She grimaces but then grabs his other arm, punching the elbow so as to snap it inwards. He howls in pain as she aims his own arm-blade at his stomach, then hammers her fist onto the back of his arm to make him impale himself. Baraka's blade enters his lower stomach and comes out the other side.

She kicks him away as he retracts the arm-blade, bleeding profusely from the hole in his chest. He crawls backwards as the tarkatans retreat into the thick, humid fog.

Sheeva is about to overtake him when she hears a deep, rumbling laugh from a nearby rooftop. It not only gives her pause, but both Kungs as well. They all turn their gaze upwards, where the silhouette of a man can be seen. But not just any man, a four-armed monstrous man... named Goro.

He leaps from the roof and lands in the street, cracking it beneath him. A car near him bounces up slightly as he lands, and windows shatter. Goro rises to his full height, taller than he was prior to his resurrection, as he walks forward. "You have done well for yourself, cousin," he greets her. She watches him with wide eyes as he emerges from the fog, his eyes pale and alien to her memories of him. "But you have chosen the wrong side in this fight, just as you did before."

"Goro..." she mutters. Both Kung Ling and Kung Jin leap to her side, pointing their weapons at him.

"You're not going to get away this time!" Kung Ling shouts at him.

Goro tilts his head. "Do I know you?"

"We fought at the siege of Z'unkahrah!" she reminds him.

He shrugs his massive shoulders. "I don't remember it."
>>
>>49026010

Ling grits her teeth, fuming at him. Suddenly, they get word from Fireseed over their communicators. "Regroup! Kaito's team needs assistance!"

Goro folds his arms. "Do you mean to run away, like cowards?"

"Nobody's running!" Ling insists. "Come on, we three can take him!"

Jin looks a bit nervous. He's uncertain; part of him wants to regroup, while part of him wishes to remain to face Goro. Sheeva's eyes dart down to her communicator, where Fireseed again calls for them to retreat and rejoin the main group.

"There might be something more going on," Jin says as Baraka, behind Goro, crawls away. "We should regroup!"

"We can fight him!" Ling insists. "Come on!"

The dragon-mutated shokan gives another rumbling laugh. "Where is your pride, fools? Your honor?"

Sheeva's blood boils as this perversion of the shokan form that was once her cousin mocks them. Kaito's words echo in her mind, about choosing her battles and letting her opponents goad her into fighting, but her pride cannot allow her to run away from him... can it?

Sheeva stares into the laughing Goro's eyes for a moment. It pains her to say it, she doesn't want to more than anything, but for once she decides to follow Kaito's advice and not ignore Fireseed's orders. "We regroup with the others!" she declares.

Jin nods. "Right!" He begins to back up, but Ling refuses.

"What?! We can take him! Come on, let's---HEY! Put me down!"

Sheeva, having bent over and picked up the girl and thrown her over a shoulder, turns and runs with Jin. Ling kicks her legs and slams her hands against her back, but she ignores the girl's fit as she carries her away. As they do, they can hear Goro's laughter from afar, echoing through the fog at their backs. Sheeva curses her choice, knowing that he yet lives, but her better judgment prevails and she knows she must support the team.

They make it to the others, where Ling demands to be put down. They stand amongst an intersection of roads that has seen much battle, with dead oni and tarkatans lying about. Fireseed walks up and is about to speak when Ling interrupts him. "We could have taken him down!" she says. "Instead we ran away! From Goro!"

But before Sheeva can respond by calling her an impetulent child, Fireseed steps in. "Enough! We're heading north. Kaito's team is in trouble, they're fighting more foes than we are. I think this was planned."

"They knew we'd be coming," Frost agrees. She looks at Cassie, who is reloading.

"Well, I just hope they're not pulling that same damn trick they did in Outworld and keeping us here while they attack somewhere else," she mutters.

Fireseed takes point again. "Let's move!" The team follows after, though Ling continues to shoot Sheeva a nasty look.

The team begins to run. As they grow nearer, the sky turns darker as black clouds appear, with thundering and rain following. Soon enough they are all soaking wet.

"Fantastic," Frost mutters. "I'll need to redo my hairgel when this is over with..."

"Of all the things to think about, that's what's on your mind?" Ling asks her friend.

"At least Sheeva never had to carry me over her shoulders," Frost snickers at her, and Ling fumes once more.

They make good time towards Times Square, but their quickened pace only leads them into a wall of enemies. Times Square is infested with the undead, corpses of those who perished in the war twenty years ago. Their bones are clawing their way out of the ground and the rubble, glowing neon green as they pull themselves together.

"God, it never ends," Frost mutters. "One thing after another!"

Cassie points her glock and smirks. "Come on, Frosty, it ain't that bad. It's KOMBAT TIME!"

The blue-haired girl looks at her incredulously. "Did you seriously just...?"

The squad charges into the wall of dead tearing into the spectral skeletons, but Sheeva knows these skeletons. She has seen them before, and knows that at the heart of this mob is the one behind it all.

Sheeva leaps over the horde and steps into the ruins of Times Square. The entire area is blasted, almost unrecognizable from its original form, with the remnants of Shao Kahn's fortress taking up the heart. Sheeva blasts and bashes her way through rubble as she reaches the stones of the ancient citadel.

Here, at the heart of the ruin, she confronts the master of this attack: Quan Chi. She could nearly smell his vile magic from a mile away. "I should have known you were behind this," she mutters.

His back is to her. He closes a chest, having removed some kind of artifact which he hides away on his person. "Sheeva. What a delight to see you again," he says with a smile as he turns around. "It's been far too long for old friends."

"Your very presence sickens me," she says with a sneer. "The realms were better off without you."

"Oh, I doubt that very much," he chuckles. "After all, my dear, who would be around to challenge you were it not for me and my new friends?"

"So you are the one who organized all of them," she says, holding up her fists. "Then I shall cut off your head to disperse them!"

"I am not yet done, and I will need my head for the work to come," he says with a smile. "I have more friends to gather. Now, if you will excuse me..."

He waves a hand and creates a green, swirling portal, walking towards it.

"Oh, no you don't!" Sheeva says as she runs up to him.

She falls right into it, ending up coming out the other end, outside of the fortress. Sheeva is launched back out into the storm on the other side, hitting the ground hard. She picks herself up as Quan Chi steps out of a third portal atop a nearby spire of rock.

"Always so predictable," he says, amused. She looks up at him as he smiles, holding up his hands. "Don't feel bad, Sheeva. I recruited Drahmin as my minion because I needed brutish, dumb muscle. It is good to know that these 'New Defenders' recruited you for the same purpose."

"Come down and see how dumb I can be, sorcerer," she dares him. "Or are you a coward?"

"You are beneath me. Figuratively, but also metaphorically. I have someone else who may play with you while I attend to other matters."

Nearby, another portal opens up. Sheeva looks as a large figure walks though, four hooves stomping on the ground and crushing rocks. Her eyes widen as none other than Motaro emerges, in full centaur form!

"This cannot be!" she says. "The curse---"

"SILENCE!" Motaro shouts at her. "Quan Chi has freed me from your pathetic curse. You pitiful, mewling shokan, so proud, so haughty in your castles---your pathetic race has existed for long enough! Your curse upon my kind shall be erased and paid back tenfold upon your kind! But first... I shall stomp your head into the earth! I shall crush it beneath my hooves! I will parade your body to Kuatan and throw it before King Duroc and show him what his 'champion' is worth!"

"Enough then!" Sheeva roars. "You have lived for far too long, Motaro! Now I will finish you!"

Sheeva charges at Motaro as the centaur speeds towards her. She hurls herself at him, bashing his chest and making him stop in his tracks, letting out a loud, "Oomph!" She lands in front of him and throws a dual uppercut that knocks his chin upwards and makes him back up and fall on his hind legs.

Again she leaps at him, using herself as a battering ram upon his chest. He falls back fully now, weakened from her blows but not out for the count.

>>49027299

Reaches down and picking him up by the horns, she smashes her forehead against his, before doing it again and then a third time. She lets go as he slumps down and prepares to finish him off.

>>49027423

His tail then flicks up, the long metal appendage aiming at her. Its tip glows red as he fires a blast from it straight at her which hits her in the stomach and sends her flying backwards into a car. The metal bends and breaks as she hits it, embedded in its side, which allows Motaro a chance to pick himself up. Lightning cracks overhead as he roars before charging at her!

Thrashing her way out of the car, she sees him coming and knows just how to stop his charge. Her hands are covered in flames and she claps them in front of herself, creating an explosive clap that results in a shockwave, sending away rain and debris in front of her. Motaro shields his face but still takes damage from the attack, grunting as he back up a few paces.

>>49027779

Growing confident, Sheeva runs up to grapple him, but his left arm suddenly thrusts forward and wraps around her neck. Sheeva struggles as he lifts her up, tightly clasping her throat as he strangles her with one arm. He takes down his other arm from shielding his face and begins to pummel her face, quickly drawing blood.

Through punch after punch, Sheeva desperately tries to escape and breathe. Motaro's face twists into a malicious smile as her arms fall limply by her side.

"Now you die, Sheeva," he tells her. "Alone!"

"NOT ALONE!" a voice calls out. Motaro's eyes go wide as a metal whip wraps around his neck, pulling back on him. He lets go of the shokan who crumbles to the ground as Takeda lands on Motaro's back, pulling on his whip like the reigns of a horse. "Woah, boy! Hiyah! Yah! Get along there now! Hiyah!"

Forrest Fox then leaps down, having travelled with Takeda, wielding his kusarigama. As Motaro struggles to get Takeda off, he throws the sickle end and hooks it around one of Motaro's horns, yanking on him. The centaur is now struggling against two people pulling him on opposite ends.

From the other side of the fortress, Sam runs up and sees Sheeva immediately. She runs to her side and begins to help her up. "Come on, you can get back up!" she encourages her.

Nearby, Motaro attempts to use his tail to blast at Sheeva, still focused on her. Sam sees the red plasmic ball coming and quickly dives in front of it, absorbing the blast with no damage.

Sheeva coughs as she gets back up, ready to join her team!

Sheeva stands up alongside Sam and looks at her, patting her shoulder. "Thank you for your encouragement. I apologize for what I am about to do."

"What are you---GAAAH!"

Sheeva picks up Sam by the leg, holding her upside down for a moment. The girl protests as Sheeva walks over towards Motaro, still being held in place by Takeda and Forrest. Picking her up and holding on with all four hands, Sheeva swings Sam at the centaur, smashing him with the policewoman. Predictably, Sam is unharmed, but the centaur is sent down to the ground. Takeda and Fox both roll away as he crashes down.

Sheeva straights Sam, whose hair is now throroughly a mess, and sets her down. "Thank you," she says to the human.

A very dizzy Sam replies, "Yeah, it's, uh..." before falling over.

Sheeva approaches Motaro as he attempts to get back up. Shaking his head, he barely opens his eyes before he sees the enraged Sheeva standing over him, right hands burning with shokan fury. She delivers two fierce right punches to his chest, explosive fiery force accompanying each as she brutalizes his ribcage. He coughs up blood in response as he falls down, half-submerged in a puddle.

She then walks around, bringing up her foot and stomps on his equine back, attempting to break his spine. She does this twice before Motaro suddenly sinks into the flat puddle, vanishing, causing her next stomp to merely splash some water.

Looking around, she then notices atop a nearby rooftop, highlighted by another bolt of lightning, is none other than Rain, the exiled prince. He has rescued Motaro from her justice, but Rain is quickly set upon by Kaito! They must have been battling this entire time, as the elementalist and the water warrior resume their conflict atop the roof.

Sheeva quickly picks up Sam and approaches Fox and Takeda. She looks at the Shirai Ryu and advises them to return to their teams; she will do the same with her squad. They nod and run off as Sheeva heads back to the sothern end of the area. Her eyes are briefly drawn upwards as Rain brings down a lightning bolt upon Kaito, who uses the Staff of Raiden to absorb it. He then blows a fierce windstorm at Rain, who teleports away in a puddle of water.

Sheeva finds Fireseed and the others mopping up the last of the skeletons. She quickly sets Sam down and props her in a sitting position alongside a car as Fireseed and Cassie run up. "What's going on?" he asks, but then Rain appears nearby, popping out of the water!

Before they can react, he moves his hands in a flurry and creates a wave of water in front of him, thrusting it towards them! Sheeva braces herself and stands strong, but the others are all washed away. When the wave passes and Sheeva remains standing, Rain looks at her.

"Good to see you again, Sheeva. It's been too long."

"Not long enough, traitorous dog," she replies.

He shrugs. "Well, we're all traitors in our own way. You betrayed your emperor and your king, if I recall correctly."

"Not so nearly a crime as betraying one's realm, their people and their very bloodline! Your father, Argus, was a protector of Edenia! Now look at you, reduced to common thuggery!"

"Ours is anything but common," Rain says, laughing beneath his mask. "Wait until our numbers match your own, Sheeva. Until then... it's been fun catching up."

"Your numbers...?"

Rain looks up and sees something coming. He slips down onto the wet ground as Kaito smashes down into it, cracking the earth beneath him. He stands up and looks around, but the edenian, much like the rain that is falling all around them, could be anywhere.

Sheeva approaches Kaito and quickly explains what he said. The man nods. "Yeah, he's been rattling off about it the whole time we were fighting... That's not all we fought. Hotaru and his Orderrealm guards, along with 'Emperor' Reiko and his soldiers. They hit us hard, we've got some wounded."

Sheeva nods. "I witnessed the oni Drahmin, Baraka, Goro, Motaro and their ringleader: Quan Chi."

Kaito scowls a bit. "Seems like they've all teamed up ever since Onaga brought them together... Seems like they're not trying to keep it a secret anymore. Quan Chi's putting together a team of his own, and we just met his first recruits."

"Did you defeat or capture anyone?"

He shakes his head. "No... They all retreated, or were swept away. This wasn't an attack meant to do anything more than make us aware of thier existence. But why?"

"I do not believe that is all," she insists. "Quan Chi. He retrieved something from Shao Kahn's citadel; I did not see what it was. But he escaped with it."

"Damn..." Kaito mutters. He looks up to the sky as the rain begins to lessen, and soon is no more. "Guess he's gone, too. Our fight's over."

All of Sheeva's team, having picked themselves up, now walk up to him. Nearby, Kaito's team approaches, and Sheeva can see that both Tundra and Jacqui sustained wounds from the attack.

Kaito's communicator beeps and he answers it. After a moment, he looks at them. "More trouble. SF Headquarters."

Cassie quickly runs up to him. "What? What's happening?"

"More like what happened," Kaito replies grimly.
>>
>>49029301

In less than an hour, they were investigating the attack on the Special Forces and the OWEA, but the damage was done. One single person, an infiltrator, attacked the base and completely sabotaged their portal technology by blowing up the lab and murdering several key scientists. In addition to this, he freed several prisoners. Some of them, such as Jarek and Zara, were recaptured, but two escaped: Kano and Tasia.

The perpetrator was Chameleon. With his shapeshifting and other strange abilities, he hit the base and left no one he encountered alive. An extensive sweep was performed by the New Defenders to ensure that the saurian or the Black Dragons were not still around, but after two hours of search and rescue operations, neither of the three of them were on site.

With SF and OWEA's portal tech temporarily out of service, all that was left were the dragon jets and the personal portal devices the team had access to. Upon returning to the island and base, the team received proper medical attention and were debriefed by General Cage, Colonel Briggs, Johnny and Secretary Blake.

Later on, Kaito gathers the team together in the rec room.

"Quan Chi, Goro, Chameleon, Drahmin, Baraka, Hotaru, Motaro, Rain, Reiko and all of their associated minions, armies and other henchmen. And as of the time of the attack, Kano and Tasia are with them. We don't know if there is any connection to Kabal's Black Dragon; he seems to be running his own show and may no longer consider Kano an ally. We can't be certain of that. What we can be certain of is that Quan Chi is still in possession of the Netherrealm Kamidogu, he likely has it hidden away somewhere. We're also fairly certain that Noob Saibot and his wraiths are not allied with them, which means Chaosrealm isn't on their side either; we should consider them both hostile yet neutrally-alligned."

"That's a hell of a Legion of Doom cueball's put together," Cassie says with a whistle. "That's almost as many guys as us."

"Yet Rain mentioned not being done," Kaito points out. "So this isn't over yet. They're made their opening move: with OWEA down, we're the only response team who can quickly deploy to any location in the realms. We also learned another valuable lesson today: we can no longer afford to send the entire team into a situation, unless absolutely necessary."

"So, what are we going to do?" Fireseed asks. "How do we adjust?"

"Whenever a situation pops up, we're going to evaluate it and send in a measured response," Kaito explains. "At least a third of the team will always remain at base, in case we run into a situation like today where two things are happening at once. Maybe we couldn't have stopped Chameleon, but we could've gotten the alert if we had personnel here at base. So, we're not going all-out anymore."

"Makes sense," Takeda replies. "Was there anything else?"

Kaito nods. "SF is taking measures to step up security on their end. Secretary Blake has pushed for the creation of more combat androids."

Cassie scoffs. "Are you kidding? More of those tin-cans? I thought that thing was strictly to be used for training and training only. When Skynet pops up and takes control of those things, I am so going to rub this in whoever was in charge's face."

Kaito sighs and holds up a hand. "I know. But they won't play a role in battle, only in installation guarding. Those androids could potentially detect camouflaged enemies, like Chameleon, from infiltrating our ranks. Either way, it's out of my hands. Blake is the one pushing for it."

"I'm telling you, Skynet..." Cassie cautions. "We've already seen what happened to one realm that relied too much on tech."

"Either way, those are the changes being pushed out. Everyone, return to normal, but be ready. Now that the enemy has shown his hand, we need to be ready to find them and stomp them out. They're hiding somewhere in the realms, and when they stick their heads up, we'll be there."

Everyone nods and stands up, moving to disperse from the rec room. Kaito approaches Sheeva. "Got a minute?" She follows him outside, where they may speak in private. And that you were staring down Goro when he did... but you still came back. You stuck with the team."

She straightens a bit. "I did not want to, but I did. Goro can wait. Our enemies are allied against us; this is both a blessing and a curse. That means where there is one, there will be the others." She looks at him and adds, "Goro will be found. He will be with them. And I know that his pride means he will attempt once more to take back the realm of the shokan."

"This... Deadly Alliance of Quan Chi's is definitely going to be a big problem," Kaito says. "Some of our strongest enemies are on his side. Before, they were mostly independent, so I don't know how Quan Chi has convinced them all to work together but it can't be good."

Sheeva looks down at him. "Perhaps we should keep a closer eye on Shang Tsung. With how our enemies are grouping up I don't doubt that they may have tried to contact him, and if so they would have direct line of sight to what goes on in our base."

"That depends if they know he even exists," Kaito points out. "I mean, we didn't. But you're right, we'll need to keep him close. We'll also need to let all of our allies know what's happened: the Shaolin, the Lin Kuei, the Shirai Ryu, Kotal Kahn. Our enemies could pop up anywhere and at any time. I'm going to call the Dragon Wing back into activity and get Mileena on the island again; I'll also alert the Edenian royalty."

"I too shall warn the shokan," Sheeva says. "Goro will not rest for long, not while Duroc lives."

"Good. It'll be hard to keep everyone safe... but that's our job now." Kaito looks up at Sheeva. After a moment of silence, he changes the subject. "Sheeva, are you happy?"

"What?" she blinks a few times. "I do not know if I understand your meaning..."

He faces her a bit more and says, "Look, I'm not blind, and I'm not stupid. You've been my friend and someone I care about for a long time, I can tell when you're troubled."

"You..."

He turns back out to the sea. "I know that the mission came up before I could talk to you both about what happened, but Fireseed has his own issues to work out. His family was killed in the invasion... shokan were involved. But you, Sheeva, you're facing entirely different issues. It wouldn't surprise me if you were considering leaving."

He looks up at her again. "I don't want you to go, but I can't make you stay. If you feel you would be better off among your own kind, with your people, protecting them in case someone like Goro or Kintaro or anyone else comes along, instead of being here when they do, I understand completely. You're the champion of the shokan and one of the finest warriors I've ever known. Being your friend is more than enough; you don't need to stay here if you don't want to." His eyes drift off to the side a bit. "I know that you're alone."

Her lips part slightly. She is used to praise, but not often is it that someone can read her so well that she is humbled by their words. It takes someone very special, like Kaito or Jagara, to speak to her so openly and honestly, without worrying about her power or station. It takes a true friend to do so, and he has seen right through her core to the issue.

She averts her eyes as well. "I... am not certain. I must admit that I cannot know yet if I belong here all the time. I have spent much time dwelling on this subject..."

"I can tell," he smiles. "You're easier to read than you think, you know."

She furrows her brow a bit in bluster. "Do not press your luck, my friend."

Kaito chuckles softly to himself. She cracks a smile as well as the corners of her lips rise upwards. "I do not intend to leave, but I am having difficulty adjusting. It is as you said... I am lonely."

He reaches up and takes hold of one of her hands, an action that she finds strangely welcome. "You mean a lot to me, Sheeva. Just because I'm captain of the team doesn't mean I can't spend time with an old friend of mine. And what's more, you should try making friends with the others."

"It is... difficult," she admits. "Shokan build comraderie through battle and competition. With each battle, I grow to respect the others more, but this... other kind of contact, a more emotional kind, is something shokan typically only reserve for true family, extremely close friends, or lovers. And here, I have neither."

He nods. "I understand. It'll take time for you to figure things out. Do you think a trip home would help?"

"Perhaps," she replies. "But perhaps, rather than return to my old family, I should remain here and focus more on building a new one. It takes time for a shokan to forge strong bonds... such as the one I share with you."

Their eyes meet and they share a warm smile. Kaito pulls her in for a hug, which she returns, taking care to not squeeze too tightly. After sharing this, they part and turn back towards the base.
>>
"So, what's next?" he asks her.

"Well, I suppose I could train with the others... Cassie has asked for my help in training Sam, and Takeda is attempting a shokan's workout... In time, I will have to confront Fireseed as well, I think."

"He's got a good head on his shoulders. He'll come around. I think everyone---and that includes you---eventually will, so don't worry."

With a hand on her shoulder, he leads her inside, where she returns to the team... her team.

I'll call it there.

Thank you everyone for playing this weekend's episode of Mortal Kombat Konquest! This episode of the New Defenders starring Sheeva was, as always, a blast. I hope it was great for you all, because it was for me. I enjoyed all of it, from Sheeva's introspection to the poachers with Fireseed and then the battle in New York, with all the little character bits and moments in-between.

As always, it was a great time playing with you guys, and I hope you had fun.

But now comes the time for a poll! And this time, I thought I would give you guys a synopsis of each character episode to give you a hint of what to expect when you vote for a character. Perhaps a certain episode sounds more interesting to you than picking your favorite character. So here they are:

>Cao
