You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

"You're sure this is authentic." The Captain frowns as he gives Anna an analytical stare.

"W-well, there's no encryption or anything on the transmission. She's broadcasting on an open channel." Anna bites her lip. "Um, my German is a bit rusty, so I'm not quite sure what she's saying..."

"It's m-m-mostly just curse words. S-she may not even be broadcasting on purpose." Vicky adds in nervously.

"You know German?" You raise an eyebrow.

"I p-picked up quite a bit from Bismarck and Tirpitz." Vicky wipes some sweat from her brow. "Enough to know general w-words and p-pretty much all of their profanity..."

"Do any of you recognize the voice?" The Captain turns to the other British ships.

"I can't say that I have..." Dorsetshire frowns as she puts a gloved hand to her chin. "How about you, Exeter?"

"Hmmmmm, I think she sounds familiar, but I'm not too sure..." Exeter shakes her head and winces as a burst of static interrupts her. "The signal quality isn't too good either, so I wouldn't know unless we actually see the source."

"I was afraid of that." The Captain sighs.

"Is there something you're not telling us?" Portland glances at her superior.

"I've had Naval Intelligence triangulate the transmission source, and it's heading south towards Atlas." The Captain says grimly. "Either this is a trap to lure us out, or the distress call is genuine, and in that case we risk warning the Abyssals of our presence if we intervene."

"And at that distance, it seems only our destroyers would be able intercept them in time...." San Diego points out.

"Well, it's a good thing you've already got a group of destroyers ready to go, right?" You grin boastfully.

"Are you sure about this, sir?" Portland glances at the Captain, who appears deep in thought.

"We'll hit them so hard and fast, they'll never know we were there!" You grin as you crack your knuckle. "Ya got nothing to worry about, Captain!"

The Captain pauses for a moment before finally nodding.

"All right. Hoel, you lead Heerman, Johnston, Kidd, and Haida out to investigate. Unfortunately, you'll have to do without Eldridge since she won't be able to keep up with you at full steam. Once you confirm and resolve the situation, you'll link back with the main battlegroup."

"Yes sir!" You salute enthusiastically.

"Anna, can you interrupt their communications? Keep them from being able to send a warning out?" The Captain asks.

"I-I can put out a wide area jamming signal." Anna nods. "B-but to be sure, I'd have to jam our own channels, too. That would only leave short range comms, so H-Hoel, if something happens you wouldn't be able to call for support!"

"Just go with the full jamming, we probably won't need any extra help!" You boast as you slap Anna on the back. "We'll be done with this before you know it!"

"U-um okay." Anna nods, not fully convinced. "J-just be careful!"

"Always am!" You laugh as you leap off the dock and summon your Rig, your feet planting firmly onto the water's surface. You sisters,, Kidd, and Haida follow right after.

"So, any idea what we're going up against?" Heerman asks as she checks her 5 inch guns to make sure they're loaded.

"No idea!" You say happily. "Could be anything!"

"Just how I like it!" Johnston smiles brightly.

"They better be having some good booty to plunder!" Kidd chortles.

"I can't believe all of you are so high spirited about this..." Haida groans. "I for one would like to have an idea of what we're up against."

"The sun will be going down by the time you intercept the target." The Captain warns. "We can't send out recon planes in daylight or they might get visually spotted, so you'll have to go with what your own sensors and optics can find."

"Wonderful." Haida groans.

"Yoohoo!" A familiarly annoying voice chimes over the radio. "Me, Darter, and Flasher already deployed ahead! If you can wait for us we can handle them all together!"

"The subs aren't nearly as fast as we are." Haida warns, her eyes flashing as she crunches the numbers in her head. "We can still catch the target, but it'll bring us dangerously close to Atlas..."

You hate to admit it, but the subs could serve to be an invaluable recon and ambush asset, especially in as situation where you don't really know what you're getting into. However, Haida did have a point. Even with their head start, subs were pretty damn slow and the target would get distance from you while you waited to rendezvous.

"All right, you guys see if you can get some eyes on them, then." You sigh, still reluctant to accept the help of goddamn submarines.

"All right! Just let us get into position and we'll let you know when it's safe to come~!" Dace giggles like she made some sort of naughty joke.

Goddamn subs.

You and your four fellow destroyers maintain radio silence as you speed south at full steam. To the west, you could see the bright orange sun slowly begin to sink towards the horizon. To the south, you could see the ominous clouds of the Storm Wall, constantly being highlighted from lightning.

More concerning was that you were now close enough to Atlas that you could just barely see it over the horizon with your optics at full magnification.

"I have visual on the target." Darter's smooth, more professional voice speaks up. Thank god it wasn't her sister sub. "Looks like it's right on the money. Abyssal SAG towing a shipgirl south. Looks like she's struggling."

"Numbers? Composition?" Haida asks.

"Six destroyer class and three humanoid cruiser class." Darter reports. "Do you want us to engage?"

The explosions catch you by surprise, but not as much as the Abyssals. You see the two Ri-class cruisers, in charge of towing the captured German ship, explode in balls of flame and mist as Dace and Darter's torpedoes detonate directly under them.

The Ne-class cruiser, the clear lead of the little Abyssal flotillia, turns its head in surprise, and that's when Flasher strikes. Instead of engaging from standoff distance like Dace and Darter, Flasher apparently liked doing things up close and personal. You see her eject out of the water like a missile, wrapping one arm around the Ne-class cruiser's mouth and chin to pull its head back, exposing its chest where Flasher stabs a torpedo straight into it with her other arm. The Ne-class gives a high pitched shriek as oilblood squirts from the wound like a broken water main. And just as quickly, Flasher lets go of the doomed Abyssal and slides back into the water before the escorts can do anything.

But it wasn't over. A scant few seconds later, the torpedo's safety fuse, set on a timer, finally expires, and the torpedo explodes, shattering the Ne-class cruiser's torso like glass and sending its Rig and head flying in the air while the legs sink into the water, twitching and writhing.

"JESUS." Kidd gasps.

"That was... a bit extreme." Haida bites her lip as if fighting the urge to vomit.

"We've done our part. It's all up to you." Flasher says simply as she and her compatriots disappear under the waves.

At this point, the remaining Abyssal destroyers were in a rage. Without their command ships and with comms jammed, they were now reverting back to their base instincts. Some of them were searching for targets, while a couple of them turned to the German ship, a convenient outlet for their anger.

"Plan?" Heerman asks as she revs up her boilers.

"Bring it, you scheisse!' The German shipgirl shrieks in defiance as she struggles against the thick black chains still binding her.

"Let's get that Kraut!" You order as you rev up your new engines. You're caught off guard at just how FAST you accelerate, your head whipping back and striking the smokestack mounted on your Rig before you can regain control. The rest of your squadron are a bit slower to get up to speed, but they stay in formation with you, five and four inch cannons roaring and barking in fury.

The sudden assault causes the confused Abyssal destroyers to scatter, creating an opening for you to reach the captured German shipgirl. You see her still struggling against her bonds, even as she sees you approach. The first thing you notice is her bright blond hair, tied in a pair of braids and an eyepatch over her right eye.

"GET ME OUT OF THESE CHAINS SO I CAN PUNISH THESE LITTLE SCHEISSES!" The German shipgirl screams in surprisingly good German.

Already, you could see that the chains were probably what were preventing her from rigging up. However, you could see the German shipgirl was already pretty beat up with scratches, cuts, bruises, and burnt and torn clothing. Maybe freeing her wasn't such a good idea?

And those chains looked pretty sturdy.

"They're starting to regroup!" Haida warns, her twin four inches dropping shells into the distance.

"Okay, okay!" You grunt as you press the barrel of your arm mounted 5 incher against the black iron chains binding the German shigirl. "Mind giving us your name?"

"German Cruiser Graf Spee." The German shipgirl grunts. She briefly turns her head away as you fire, your 5 inch cannon thankfully sufficient to break up the links, weakening the chain just enough for Graf to break free herself. She stretches her neck and flexes her arms. "Danke, Yankee."

"No probs." You grin.

"Now, let us show these grubs the power of the Kriegsmarine!" Graf Spee cackles as her Rig materializes. There were plenty of dents and burn marks on her Rig already, indicating existing damage, but those fearsome 11 inch guns of hers looked to still be intact. "Attacke!"

With that, Graf Spee immediately charges off to attack a pair of destroyers that were still separated from the main pack. A pulse from your radar shows the rest of your squadron tangling with the remaining four enemy destroyers, neither side being able to get a decisive edge over the other.

You skate furiously after Graf Spee as she charges the two Abyssal destroyers with practically zero abandon, her 11 inch cannons blazing away, bracketing the destroyers with her endless volleys.

The destroyers actually pick the smart option and split up, forcing Graf Spee to commit to a single target. The German cruiser veers off to chase the destroyer breaking to port, so you decide to hound the one breaking to starboard. The light was beginning to dim at this point, but your radar was still giving you a solid track on the fleeing destroyer.

Your engines thrummed with newfound energy. You felt that you could push thirty five, maybe even forty knots with this new setup!

You fire a simple three shell burst, and watch as all three projectiles drill themselves right into the destroyer's back. The creature gives one last shriek before going limp in the water.

"Gutes Schießen." Graf Spee pats you on the shoulder, her 11 inch gun still smoking. You turn to see that the destroyer she had been chasing was basically a steaming oilblood slick now. "For a Yankee."

"Um, thanks?" You raise an eyebrow as you turn your attention to the rest of the squadron. Thankfully, you had no reason to be concerned. Your fellow destroyers were mopping up the last of the Abyssals.

Johnston shield bashed her target with such force that its armored shell literally shattered to pieces, pulverizing the soft bits inside. Heerman practically jammed her augmented arm straight down the gullet of her target and physically tore out a handful of its critical systems/organs. Kidd had easily hacked her target to pieces while Haida calmly and coolly finished hers off with a very professional double tap.

"Everybody good?" You ask.

"All green!" Johnston smiles.

"It was a fine battle!" Kidd laughs proudly. "Though it be a shame those damn scallywag submarines stole the best foes!"

"Everything is clear. No hostiles in sight." Haida reports.

"Hnnnn, I don't suppose these... creatures we're fight are part of the Royal Navy?" Graf Spee asks as she gives a loud yawn.

"Um, no." You shake your head.

"Pity."

Yeah... you wonder what you were going to do with this German cruiser...

Australia, a deathworld continent with food import dependent people, is probably starving to death or have suffered severely at the hands of Abyssals.

Given it's location and how prolific the Abyssals are in the Pacific Ocean, it's a probably a good guess that being Australian (and Singaporean, Filipino, Indonesian, etc) is suffering.

"Okay, um, Graf. Is it okay if I call you Graf?" You speak to the German cruiser.

"Hm, I suppose since we've fought side by side, we're sisters in arms." Graf gives a slight smile. "So I'll allow it. What do you ask of me?"

"Well, we gotta keep going, but um, if you head straight north, you'll run into the Falkland Islands. As long as you identify yourself, you should be fine."

"Hmm, and where are all of you going off to?" Graf raises a suspicious eyebrow.

"We're gonna be attacking an Abyssal base." You explains. "And, erm, you're not exactly in the best of shape..."

"I understand." Graf nods sadly. "It wouldn't do for me to fall behind or otherwise drag you down in the battle."

"OOOOOOOH!" Kidd squeals as she speeds up to the cruiser, her one eye flashing brightly. "You be the Graf Spee, aren't you?! One of them most famous commerce raiders in the War?!"

Pepe chirps happily in unison.

"That I am." Graf laughs. "Aren't you the adorable little one?"

"Oh oh! You have to tell me all your stories!" Kidd jumps up and down in enthusiasm, briefly breaking her pirate character for a second in her excitement. "I be wanting to be a legendary pirate of the seas!"

"You, I like you!" Graf leans down puts a hand on Kidd's shoulder. "Perhaps if we meet later, we can."

"YAR!" Kidd cheers.

"Are you going to fine by yourself?" Heerman asks.

"I should be able to make it back." Graf nods. "Most of the damage here is superficial."

Wait a minute all the sister Fletchers Hoel has met look pretty much exactly the same. Except for Heerman, Hoel and Johnston. Does this mean they aren't sister ships? Or are Johnstons boobs and Heerman's haircolour a similar thing to Kidd's parrot and Hoel's baseball bat?
>>

The Watsonian answer would be that maybe going down in a blaze of glory at Samar means Taffy 3 gets to have more unique forms compared to some of the other Fletchers, especially since the class was churned out by the truckload.

The Doylist answer would be because Merc was lazy and only gave them a few notable traits because they're just side characters.

"All right, safe sailing." You nod.

"Viel Glück." Graf Spee nods back as her smokestack fumes and she steams north.

"Woooow.. to meet a living legend like that..." Kidd sighs dreamily.

"Haha, it looks like you're in love!" Johnston chortles. "I do have to say, Graf Spee is quite the looker!"

"I-It's not like that!" Kidd stammers, trying to get back into character. "She be a fellow corsair like I! It's just mutual, professional respect!"

"Uh huh..." Johnston gives a smug smile as she continues to tease her sister ship. "Suuuuuuure."

"Everybody, focus." Heerman grunts.

"We're falling behind schedule." Haida points out. "Look, it's already dark."

Sure enough, the sun had already sunk beyond the horizon, the last few rays of orange light dying like embers as the darkness of night rolled in.

"Anna's jamming is still up, so we're going to have to rendezvous with them." Haida continues.

"Right, right." You nod. "All right, let's move out, everybody! We don't have time to deal with the wreckage here."

The five of you steam off again, the three subgirls naturally but frustratingly staying silent about their current positions, assuming they were still in the area at all. At this point, everything was pitch black, requiring all of you to use your night optics and radar to navigate. Fortunately, Atlas off in the distance was brightly lit, acting as a sort of lighthouse to help keep your bearings.

"Hoel, can you hear me?" Anna's voice crackles. "Hello? Anyone?"

"Anna, it's me!" You announce. "Threat's taken care of."

"O-oh, good!" Anna sighs with relief.

On your night optics, could see the rest of the fleet waiting at the rendezvous point as agreed. Both shipgirls and conventional ships milled on the water, waiting for the order to attack.

"You're back!" Anna squeals as she shoots forward and hugs you. "I'm so glad to see that you're okay!"

"Where's our German guest?" Portland asks.

"Ah, well, she was a bit damaged when she got captured, so we decided to send her back to base." You explain.

"Which ship was she?" Did you find out?" Dorsetshire asks, more curious than anything.

"Oh yeah, it as Graf Spee." You shrug.

And that's when you see Exeter's speed drop sharply. Through you optics, you could see she was still smiling, but that smile was much more forced. You could also swear that she was actually quaking.

"G-Graf Spee? You're sure it was her?" She coughs a bit too loudly.

"Yep, she even said so herself." You nod.

"Spee!" Achilles growls. "I figured she'd come back someday!"

"Well, beat her once, we can beat her again if she tries to start something!" Ajax says optimistically.

"Eheheheh, yes...." Exeter of course doesn't seem too sure herself.

"Oh dear, I figured it would be her." Dorsetshire shook her head. "However, it's too late to worry about that. Night has fallen and we still have the element of surprise. Hoel, are you and your girls ready?"

You glance at your fellow destroyers, who all give the thumbs up.

"We have F-35s and Dace, Darter, and Flasher providing recon." Portland joins in. "Eldridge can mask you from the Abyssals' radars, but they can still sight you visually, so the F-35s and subs will plot out the Abyssals' patrol routes and guide you through."

"If you run into any trouble, we have Typhoons in the air ready to provide air cover." Dorsetshire adds. "Calling them in is a last resort, of course."

"Also, Qyburn told us to give you these." Portland tosses several satchels to you and your squadron. "Those are shaped charges, designed to detonate the platform's oil reserves. Just plant them on the primary pipe and get clear. They're on a one minute timer."

"Okay, plant them, get out. Got it." You nod.

"Now, this is important." Portland cautions. "We've got no idea what the Abyssals have garrisoned in there. If you're compromised, get the hell out of there."

"Awwwww, are ya really that concerned about me~?" You coo sweetly.

"As my subordinate, yes." Portland huffs.

"How about you two lovebirds quit squabbling and get on with it." San Fran groans as she takes a swig from one of her many flasks. "I don't like being this close to the Storm Wall, so the the faster we get this damn mission over with the better."

Indeed, now that San Fran mentioned it, you did feel that the air was a bit heavier, and there was a bit of a troublesome throbbing in your head. Probably just the weather patterns messing with you, but still...

"All right, fueled up and restocked!" Johnston grins. "Come on, Hoel, or we're gonna leave you behind!"

"Yeah! I don't stop for no one!" Eldridge waves for everyone to follow her. "Now come on! Everybody make sure to keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times! And off we go!"

"Are you always this cheerful on convoys?" Haida frowns.

"Gotta take the edge off the boredom somehow!" Eldridge laughs. "So on the left, we see just open ocean, and to your right, CERTAIN DOOOOOOOOOOOOOM."

And sure enough, the Atlas oil platform loomed in the distance, silhouetted by the numerous search lights and gas fires burning in the night.

Even from this distance, you already felt very, very small.
