You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

"You want me to WHAT?" You glare at your resident intelligence officer, who just gives an innocent but slightly nervous smile.

"Er, the mission by our intel team was successful, but there was a... complication with the extraction." Elizabeth explains a bit too simply. "So they require a bit of assistance from us to get off planet."

"Lida, what's the status on the surface?" You ask.

"The emergency channels are flooded with distress calls." Lida frowns as she lowers the volume on her headset. "Apparently all of the automated drones and equipment on the planet are malfunctioning."

"So, if I go down there, not only do I have to deal with Hegemony forces, but rogue robots as well?" You groan.

"I know it's a lot of ask of you, but it would be a REALLY great help to us if you would provide a little lift!" Elizabeth asks sweetly.

"That's how it works, doesn't it?" Elizabeth gives a baleful sigh. "All right just get them out safe."

"That we'll do." You nod. "We'll just get Tank and some drones-"

"Um, I don't suggest bringing drones. No telling how they'd react with the virus spreading through the planetary systems..." Elizabeth laughs nervously.

"Fine." You roll your eyes. "Tank should be able to handle things himself."

"I'm getting something on sensors." Lida blinks. "Long Claw is launching a landing craft."

"WHAT." You glower. "Open comms with it."

"Hey, Sis!" Carly waves cheerfully on the screen. "Heard some of your guys needed some help, so I thought I'd lend a helping hand!"

"That goddamn Carly!" You grumble as you stomp towards the shuttle bay. "Bradford! You have the bridge! Just make sure you keep your distance from the remaining Heg ships!"

"Yes, Captain. Good luck." Bradford nods loyally.

"Don't get killed!" Amy warns.

"Oh, I'm not gonna be the one getting killed." You grumble as you exit the bridge. You immediately make a beeline to the armory, where you find Tank restocking his weapons. He turns and sees your presence, almost immediately discerning why you were here. He points to the assorted armor. Heavy for protection or light for mobility? Both had a place in a dangerous extraction run like this.

You point to the Heavy suit, and Tank loyally nods and lifts you into the waiting armor. As always, the smart armor wraps around you and directly interfaces with your skinsuit. No problems.

Tank then trudges over to the weapons racks and points to a few possible loadouts you could take.

SHOCK AND AWE: Armed with retro rockets, thicker ablative plating, and arm mounted cannons, this set allows deployment from high atmosphere to land anywhere you're needed on a hostile planet.

RIOT CONTROL: Armed with a combat shield, plasma caster shotgun, and shock baton, this loadout specializes in close quarter combat with multiple foes.

FIREPOWER: Armed with a heavy plasma rifle with a multi-purpose underbarrel grenade launcher, this loadout is tuned to handle a variety of threats.

"How about that one?" You point to the SHOCK AND AWE loadout.

Tank nods in agreement. The rockets mounted on this loadout would give you more mobility, which would be useful in a quick extraction mission like this one. He grabs the rocket pack and mounts it on your back. Immediately, the rockets slot into place and attach onto your armor like they were designed to. Your HUD updates itself to account for the new equipment.

Neither, he's a Real Man, with so much scars on his body it's almost impossible to recognize what his face was like.
Also, his armor is actually not as thick as our Heavy Suit, and instead underneath that suit is a genuine giant of a man, a genetically altered experimental soldier whose only purpose left is War. That, and protecting Sam.

"Yeah, let's go!" You say cheerfully as you hug Tank. With the armor on, you were now roughly the same size as him, and both your armors resounded together with a loud CLANK.

Tank doesn't move at all during the hug until you pull back. He then hastily points to the door, suggesting that you start moving out now.

"Right, right, let's go!" You nod as the both of you trudge out to the shuttle bay.

"You sure you wanna land on the surface?" The shuttle pilot frowns as your transport shuttle launches. "It's a real big fucking mess down there."

"Well, we gotta get those guys out somehow." You explain. "I suppose Lida gave you coordinates for possible LZs?"

"Yeah, but there's a problem." The pilot scowls. "You see, this is the intel team's last known position."

A holographic map winks on, showing the central manufacturing block of one of Kemmler's cities. Then you could see the big ring of red circled around it.

"They're completely surrounded either by catastrophically malfunctioning robots, or trigger happy Heg troops. No good LZ near them, so we're gonna have to land a safe distance away."

"Just get us over their position, and we'll handle the rest." You assure the pilot.

"Um, okay, sure." The pilot nods reluctantly.

With that, the shuttle begins to enter Kemmler's atmosphere. Already, you can see flurry of similar civilian ships fleeing the surface, while emergency response and military ships swarmed all over the major population centers. And thanks to the shuttle's optical stealth capabilities, it could blend in perfectly in the chaos.

Another effect of getting closer to the planet was that you could get a better view of the surface. Here, you could see the consequences of what Accord Intelligence's actions have wrought. Cities were on fire, their skylines obscured with thick clouds and columns of smoke.

Dear god.

"We're coming into position over them in fifteen seconds!" The pilot. "Get ready to drop!"

"Wait, aren't we still a bit too high up?" You ask as you look out the viewport. "And you can barely see the ground through all that smoke..."

"Look, this is the lowest I can go while still blending in with the general traffic. If we break ranks, who knows if some trigger happy Heg asshole decides to take a shot at us!" The pilot argues.

Actually, even if this was a remote military facility, there would have been plenty of civilian contractors and civilian traffic. This wasn't a super-high security Heg Navy station, this was major manufacturing hub that also happened to have a Heg Navy shipyard in orbit.

Civilians were going to be killed no matter what.

https://youtu.be/iQdDRrcAOjA

>REMMLAR MANUFACTORY: The planet of Remmlar is home to a major manufacturing facility that produces basic automated worker drones to maintain Hegemony facilities.

Also, nothing was said about this being a purely military facility.
We were specifically told that this was a major planet in the Frontier.
>"That is the source of most of the Hegemony's Frontier industry." Frolaytia smiles sweetly. "In addition to military products like weapons and ammunition, they also produce a great volume of support equipment as well, such as terraforming technology, flux reactors, and drones."

We were flat out told this was a major planet.
If you thought there wouldn't be civilian cities on a major planet, that's not Accord Intelligence's fault, that's your own stupidity.

You and Tank freefall through the air, your retrorockets making constant and minute adjustments to ensure you landed where you were aiming at. You glance at Tank, his own armor's rockets keeping pace with yours. He gives you a concerned look, but you just wave off his concern.

"It's okay!" You say.

And that's when your armor's built in radar shrieks. Your HUD immediately cues you in to an incoming threat to the left, and you turn your head just in time to see a missile rise up from the ruined buildings below, spiraling towards you.

"Oh fu-" You groan as the missile explodes in your face, the shockwave sending you spinning in the air.

Your retro rockets begin to sputter uncontrollably, sending you zigging and zagging in the air. You see Tank watch helplessly as you're rocketed away from him, and you quickly lose sight as you're more concerned with the quickly approaching ground.

With a pained shout, you trigger your rockets with one last burst of hope, and thankfully, they work, spitting fire and slowing your descent enough so that your armor can absorb the impact.

"Damnit." You sigh as you quickly check your surroundings. No immediate threats, but you knew you were definitely way off target. There was going to be some walking ahead of you. You check the status of your rockets.

BOOST OFFLINE. ATTEMPTING SELF REPAIR.

Shit. So basically, these things were just extra weight on you. You wonder if you could trust the supposed self repair abilities.

Ugh, might as well keep the booster. Might come in handy later. You then check your sensors and comms to get some situational awareness.

"Tank? Carly? Can anybody hear me?" You ask over the channels.

All you get in return is static. Must be some kind of wide area jamming in place, which was going to make things more annoying. Thankfully, your onboard sensors were still working, and immediately marked three spots of interest.

First, was Tank's IFF beacon. If you were reading the map correctly, it looked as if he had touched down on the designated drop point intact. However, he was still several kilometers away. It was going to be a bit of a walk.

Second, was a landing beacon typically used by pathfinder teams. The IFF code it was broadcasting was Carly's meaning she definitely was down here. But why was she broadcasting a beacon? Was she just announcing her location to you, or was she in some kind of trouble? She was a bit closer, but it would add a few more kilometers to your journey.

Finally, the third signal was a general distress beacon. No associated IFF, so you had no clue hat that had in store for you. And it was located on the opposite side of the factory complex from Carly's signal...

You decide to head for Carly's location, concluding that if you can see Tank's beacon, then he can home in on yours.

As you trudge through the wrecked factories, you had to be at least somewhat grateful that this wasn't a residential area. It looked like whatever those spooks injected into the system, it sent pretty much everything into overdrive. In the distance, you could still hear gunfire and explosions, though more common was the blaring loudspeaker.

"ATTENTION CITIZENS. MARTIAL LAW IS NOW IN EFFECT. STAY IN YOUR HOMES OR DESIGNATED SHELTERS AND OBEY CURFEW. VIOLATORS WILL BE SHOT ON SIGHT. ATTENTION CITIZENS..."

Yep, those Heg guys certainly knew how to control a situation. Totally.

Finally, you come up to what appears to be Carly's shuttle. It didn't appear to have suffered any major damage, and looked to be largely intact.

The only problem was that it was surrounded by Hegemony troops, who appeared to be combing the area. You counted at least six men. Roughly a little more than a fireteam.

Shit.

You figure that Carly was long gone by now, considering that these Heg guys were still alive and the whole are wasn't a smoking crater. You keep your distance and dart from cover to cover, always keeping yourself obscured from their view. Fortunately, the Hegs were focused on inspecting the landed shuttle, and weren't looking directly in your direction. Pretty sloppy security, actually. Tank would have WORDS with them if he caught them like this.

Finally, you manage to circle around the landing site. Your visual sensors then tag something of interest that stood out from the surrounding environment.

A silver coin.

Now, pure silver coins were pretty damn rare, and there was only one person on this planet you knew would keep such antiquated trinkets around.

Your helmet starts tagging more coins, and you begin to follow them.

"Yo, Sis, is that you?" Carly hisses over the radio.

"Yes, it's me." You sigh in relief.

"Sis!" Carly leaps out from her hiding place and hugs you. You were already slightly larger than her in person, but in your armor you absolutely dwarfed her. She just hangs off your torso while her bodyguard Bolts rumbles out of cover. You see a few pirates as well, decked out in some more modern Accord-issue combat gear.

"Nice to see ya, Sis!" Carly grins evilly. "Now that you're here, we can go get our shuttle back!"

Of course...

"All right, let's get this over with." You groan. You were hoping to avoid conflict here, but you guess there was no helping it. "How are your guys doing?"

"Got four of my mates with me, plus Bolts." Carly motions to her motley little squad. "As you can see, they got the basic shit. Bolts is... well, Bolts."

"Are you sure he's... well...okay?" You frown. "I mean, there IS a robot virus going around..."

"ARE YOU IMPLYING SOMETHING, MEATBAG?" Bolts rumbles, his crimson optic flashing.

"Honestly?" Carly glances at Bolts and then shrugs. "I don't think I could tell the difference."

"All right, we'll should lure them away from the shuttle, first." You point out. "Don't want us wrecking our own ride, right?"

"I suppose." Carly nods in agreement. "All right, so who's gonna be the bait?"

On the one hand, the bait should be someone who was small and nimble. Carly was certainly that, but you were honestly better protected, and fairly mobile, despite the size and bulk of your armor. Bolts was a candidate too, and was probably hardier than you, but... his aggressive tendencies might backfire on you all...

Everything seemed good. You would've liked your shields to have charged a bit more, but there was no helping that.

"All right, I'll draw them away from the shuttle. You hit them once they break formation. Got it?"

"Got it!" Carly smiles brightly.

"I WILL TAKE CARE NOT TO HIT YOU, IF I FEEL LIKE IT." Bolts buzzes.

"Um, thanks?" You sigh. "All right, I'm moving!"

Your leg servos whine as you start to sprint forwards, past the shuttle but within the Heg troopers' line of sight.

"Hey! You! Stop right there!" You hear one of the troopers shout.

"It ain't one of ours, fire!" Another one shouts right as bullets start to fly past you. Your suit whines as rounds start to slam and bounce off your armor's shields, quickly depleting them.

"You! Stop!" Four of the Heg troopers peel off to follow you, leaving just two behind to keep an eye on the shuttle. Carly should be able to easily handle them. You just had to worry about the guys chasing you...

You believe discretion was the better part of valor. However, since you were penned in, you needed to determine which way to break out. The bots didn't appear to be armed with ranged weapons, and they weren't designed for combat either, but there were a lot of them. Thinking fast, you sprint away from the troopers and into the mass of bots. Immediately, the bots begin to brace themselves for impact.

But they never went against something like you. You raise your right arm, which had a portable gatling laser mounted on it and let rip. Tiny beams of light lance out, burning into the shells of the worker bots. A few of them topple over, their optics going dark, but most of the ones you hit stay up. Mechanical arms reach out and claw at you, scratching at your armor. Thankfully, your armor gives you enough mass and momentum to practically plow through them.

"Shit! More clankers!" You hear someone shout from behind.

"KEEP FIRING!"

Thankfully, the arrival of the Heg troopers distracts the bots, and they collectively turn to face the new threat. You don't bother to see who wins that fight, as you keep running.

"Has Tank shown up yet?" You ask.

You suppose it was a good time to grab Tank now, while you still had a good fix on his position. You circle around the main fight between the Heg and rogue bots, eking out as much power as you could from your armor.

Damn, Tank must be absolutely worried sick about you, getting separated from you like that. You're pretty sure he'd be super glad to see that you were okay-

You slide to a stop when you see Tank casually leading a quartet of men and women dressed in standard factory worker uniforms. No doubt the Intel team you had been sent to pick up. Tank just gives you a look and gives a simple wave.

"What? You're not worried, Tank?" You gasp.

Tank cocks his head to the side in curiosity. Whey should he? He saw your beacon, and from the movement he could tell you were perfectly fine. If you wanted to link up with him you could have done say at any time. No big deal.
