The ships of the Union picket force rocket through space towards the advancing hive fleet, the shimmering globe of Path glittering behind them. Something skims the sensors for a brief moment, its presence masked by its speed and size, and before it is possible to react a chitinous ferrous slug slams into the aproaching Union picket force, bouncing off the corvette's shields as it flickers and dies from the impact. A second shot shreds the shield cap of the ship like tinfoil and spilling a cloud of gas and water into space like a bleeding animal. Debris scatters out as the strike craft spread out, scattering in all directions as they move to intercept as missiles unload from their hulls.

Vibrant flashes fill the void of space, and a moment later a new fleet opens fire.

Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest!

You fleet emerges from a series of miniature supernovas, their forms flinging forth on an intercept course with the converging fleets.

"Reinforcements, incoming! Pivot, pivot, get guns on targets!" You hear from the scrambling fighters. Your fleet response with a crackling of static.

"The Hive has detected the enemy within human space. We will remove these drones from human space." The static cuts out, and after a short moment of silence that feels all too long, perhaps due to the tension, or perhaps due to the relativistic speed of your ships, you hear a response go out in a general broadcast.

"Hold fire on new targets. Repeat, new targets are designated unknown intentions, avoid contact."

Your fleet hammers out round after round from their spinal mounts as they skim past the enemy hive fleet, catching a smattering of fire as you pass. The shields of your own ships flicker as they deflect the light bombardment of chitinous rounds, and a moment later your own salvo hits, shattering six of the corvettes like dead leaves crumbling underfoot. The shrapnel of shattered drive wings flips end for end, tumbling forth into one of the cruisers as it slices through the ship's flesh. Frigates burst open like gutted animals as railgun fire punches clean through their hulls, and several become engulfed in flames as various internal components ignite in the sudden burst of fire, reducing another three of the frigates to tumbling ruble.

A corvette of your own explodes, its hull deliberately placed in the path of a stray impactor from the rival queen's careless salvo. Your thinkers predict its trajectory to the center of New Tokyo. You realize, with some level of pride, that your shattered corvette has likely saved possibly millions of human lives. Another round, slower, deflected from a shield, erupts on contact with Path's atmosphere, harmlessly spreading into a ball of flame high above terraced farmland along the outskirts of the city.

Your fleet comes about quickly, bleeding off its velocity in the upper wisps of atmosphere of Path as your vessels shift the gears of their skid drives, locking their drives to Talgo and entering a wide arcing path across the incoming fleet. The Union picket forces hammer into them, but quickly back off to lick their wounds, their missiles trailing behind them as they pass the attacking fleet in a sudden and momentary eruption of atomic fire and kinetic force that flashed in the dark of space with only a momentary scream of electromagnetism. cont.

Anybody ever wonder that maybe the Nigger Queens ships are garbage compared to ours is because these are the old outdated ships she no longer cares about? Like maybe she has better ships somewhere and this is just a smattering of essentially spare parts and trash.
>>
>>49179165
You figure that she'd at the very least recycle them into 'better' ships. She honestly might not have better ships yet due to the whole nobody challenging her in X-amount of time. If i'm wrong tho, please correct me.

>>
>>49179165
>spare parts and trash
Those are unnecessary in a Hive fleet due to exceptional recycling programs and logistics only being limited by how much food and metal you have. These are the standard in her shitty navy because she hasn't had the chance to stealthily steal human tech like we have.
>>
>>49179165
Hives are typically known for quantity over quality, but yes. She's probably trying to come up with some way to counter us. She's already countered our nuke pods by holding her fleets in tight formation for better point defence.

Remember White queen tasked millions of thinkers with finishing the psionic cannon and the builder had pretty much the same with thinkers throwing ideas to the wall to see what sticks.
>>
>>49179165
Better ships like the styrofoam ones we killed? Or the hive ship we shattered over Refuge?

The OQ's ships, at least the ones she has anywhere near the front lines, are shit. She may have good ones in reserve, but we have no way of knowing that. The problem we face, I believe, is that she just has many, many, more ships than we have before even accounting for the fact our ships are far more costly to produce than OQ's really cheap ones are.

She probably has other ship designs, you're correct. We just have no reason to believe she's made enough advancements in a year or so since she last fought our mother to make her ships better than we've seen. Hives are terrible at innovation (at least before quantum thinkers) even without a crystal lobotomy. She may have prototype ships, but I'm not sure they'll be too much more effective than the styrofoam ships we already destroyed. If she gets access to human or scav tech, however, we may have a lot more to worry about.

Shattered chitinous hull fragments flow forth from the atomic hellfire, and your fleet hammers into the few craft that still think, their dying minds crying out for direction, confused at the sudden turn of events. The last few ships cling to the battlecruiser as it plunges through the igniting warheads and hammering railguns, its hull pockmarked with irradiated scorch marks and truck-sized holes as it continues through to Path. Your fleet closes the distance, and your own weapons open up, chewing into the remaining craft.

The battlecruiser slows, the corvettes behind it hiding from your wall of fire. It closes in on the planet, passing the first formation of your fleet as you turn to target the hiding sub capitals as the capital ship attempts to barge its way through your impromptu blockade.

Elsewhere, on the surface of Path, a skyscraper tilts. The lights of the city flickers, and darken, and with a sound of thunder a lance of light reaches into the heavens, the air itself ionized by the normally invisible particle beam. You see it from orbit, like a finger reaching out from the surface, and it strikes into the capital ship, piercing its hull from bow to stern. You hear it scream. The corvettes flee from behind it as it begins to bleed out, and more lances lurch forward, slicing into the ship as it breaks apart, your own fleet hammering into its nerve clusters to silence it, certain it is likely the only ship here with a relay, and sure enough, as it grows silent, you feel the others lose their purpose.

"Where is Mother?"
"We fight, what do we fight?"
"Mother is not here. Where is Mother?"

You crack open several more of the corvettes, and others are gutted by more lancing beams from below. The debris drifts slowly into the atmosphere, and you watch, carefully, as the charred pieces burn to nothing.

>Have your fleet leave quickly to avoid further political complications
>Have your fleet stay and attempt to track down any remaining debris
>Other
>>
>>49179244
I sincerely doubt she has anything better at the moment-- or if she does, it's not the majority of her fleet. YET. She'll be doing what we are-- building up our forces like mad in preparation for the hammerblow.

Re the last few threads she's been pushed onto the back foot, seeing the disparity in our tech levels she's trying to scout us out to find out our force levels and if we have millions of ships or just a handful.

Also that hive ship of hers got blatted in the most hilarious fashion possible. We literally dropped an armada on her ass, nuked the everliving shit out of her entire fleet and then began boarding the hiveship.
>>

They won't shoot us (probably) unless we do something hostile, and even if they do shoot us it gives us diplomatic leverage later if we don't fire back.

Although even if we do botch this roll we've infiltrated the human scientists enough we'll get to see how they react to studying OQ fragments.

Wait, guys, is there any chance OQ learned relay stealth or that her relay could have survived impact with the planet? We don't want her to actually be able to establish some kind of intelligent outpost or control on a human world, she'd get a huge tech boost. Maybe she ordered her ships to just pretend to lose all communications as part of a cunning ruse. We might do something like that, after all.

Normally I'd think it'd be "impossible", but since we have a crit fail...

No worries.

I'm just wondering why their BC was guarding their corvettes. Standard fleet doctrine is the other way around folks-- typically you defend your capital ships with light combatants like destroyers and corvettes.

The only reason to hide corvettes behind their BC if they were trying to break through our formation, probably to get those corvettes into atmosphere.
>>
>>49179516
After you watch the ships of the Obsidian Queen burn to nothing as they fall from orbit, your ships perform a scan of the upper atmosphere. After orbiting several times in search of additional debris, and burning away several discovered chunks, you feel confident in your coverage of the battlespace.

As your clear the surrounding space of debris your forces regroup, quickly leaving Path orbit to the obvious relief of those below.

>>

>>49179928

>>
>>49179718

Your ships begin to charge their drives, their wings sweeping forward as a static crackle emanates from their hulls.

"Humans will alert the Hive of any future hostile contamination." And with that, and a burst of hard radiation, they are gone. A moment later, not far from Gemini orbit, your ships emerge back into reality.

I suppose now we have two options, I suppose I'd be good for either. Since it's labor day, I figure we can keep on running through the night, or we all get some sleep and I come back fresh this evening and we keep running with the Commonwealth battles.

What would you prefer? Either way we'll get about the same amount of quest.
>>
>>49179907
I can think of a couple possible reasons.

1. She was planning to suicide dive into the planet, and protected the smaller craft so they could act as a pseudo-MIRV.

2. The large craft was sufficiently armored that, by subjecting it to the worst of the incoming fire, her fleet list fewer functional weapons per second than if the escorts were torn apart, allowing them to squeeze out a few more parting shots.

3. Hoped to crash at least one ship reasonably intact to deploy a bioweapon from, knowing that the large craft's wreckage was certain to be atomized first.

Let's say she managed to get a spore-producing piece of debris in a equatorial planetary orbit similar to that of the ISS, i.e once around the world every 92 minutes, producing spores all the while.

Catching every single outbreak would be insanely hard. Could be done if caught early and we removed the spore-spreading debris, afterwards it's going to be a zerg hive creep invasion. After 3 hours, that's two passes it's had to spread spores across the entire equator. 3 passes, 4 1/2 hours. You'd need an army of people burning away the creep.

>>49179979
Get some rest man. You done good. Gives me time to get back to the Dark souls all-nighter I was going to have until I saw your post.
>>
>>49179983
I can think of a couple possible reasons too, but in the opposite direction.

1) It gets close enough to fire some sort of spore bombardment weapon.

2)It lets you keep command over your forces as your relay is intact.

3)It lets you dish out more damage as by the inherent nature of its bigger size, it packs more punch.

4)By not blowing up, and letting you disperse spores normally you get better coverage(similar to 1)

5)In the event of explosion, BC due to its bigger size would better spread remaining spores, as there is more ship to rain down onto the planet.
>>
>>49179979

It's even worse if it's a non equatorial orbit. Instead of just spreading spores along a single line the tilt of the planet and the rotation of the planet against the spore dispersal would make it spread contamination in a wide and unpredictable fashion. What you said may, in fact, be one of the best possibilities in terms of knowing where the spores are landing...

Maybe we should come up with a plan to get our clones off world.

It would have to be launching intact missiles that can survive the atmosphere.

Odds are it's just a number of pieces of ship with spores in them at worst. Something that survived the crash, not that can produce an infinite number of things that can also survive a crash.
>>
>>49180121
Why bother, really? They're already quasi-immortal since we can just make fresh clone bodies and stuff their previous memories in. I'm just thinking we may have triggered OQ to start going after human settlements, since we've shown to actually care when she does. She could make a false flag op to pull our forces in, then ambush us.

That's Plasma Assault Cannon, Plasma Cannon is a piercing weapon. Though it's an interesting use for it, PAC discharges enough heat after each shot to kill anything too close and would boil the water around it. In those conditions it would cook itself without radiator tubes and/or conductive armour.

The Plasma Cannon is the Hive version of the Suncaster right?

I remember QD saying that it would be perfect for a Large Drones tail since they would not get the negatives that a medium sized drone would get by using it and moving.

A Large Drone can mount a Medium sized weapon on its tail so Heavy Thumpers (the Hive version of 40k Bolters), fire/cryosprays, plasma cannons, or lightning guns would be the best option for them I think

How come we got microshields but not the big ones? The tech was originally designed to be big after all.

Our Quantom Thinkers are still arguing what big shield design to use, right?
>>
>>49185430
I think, we were originally interested in personal shielding first and that seeing the big shields gave us a boost in that research.

I found a quote about when we first saw/started researching big shields:

"Among the chaos, however, you find something that instantly gains your full attention. Across the surface, rings of undamaged land surround some of the larger military installations. Command posts, major silos, sensor stations, all unharmed and untouched by the bombardment and rain of debris. You wonder why, and as you do you watch as a high velocity impactor hits with the force of an atomic bomb. It detonates half a kilometer above the ground, and as the blast fades you spot the slight shimmer if a shield covering the area with a dome of faint energy. Along the rim you can find strange looking projectors, previously dismissed as radio towers or sensors of some kind. You are unsure of how they managed to perfect shielding for the surface of a planet, but your thinkers already have theories, especially those working on shield miniaturization."

So it seems like we were already working on shield miniaturization when we started on the big shields. My guess is we'll unlock big shields sometime in the next "day" or two.

God damn IG. I just got up. I didn't need that laughing fit.

A spray that makes tribbles emit a chemical that neuters any other tribble it comes into contact with? Humans have a lot of trouble with these things so they'd pay big for an easy method of getting rid of them.

Alternatively we could have our clones set up a tribble removal/eating service whilst spreading tribble spores via our flies.

I wonder why the canderon power taps allowed the voidfags to project themselves into reality.

What if powertaps aren't making energy from nothing? What if they're drawing energy from voidland?

Or just go with the cute mascot option. Give them away for free on the planets we claimed that have humans on ot and use them as spies.

Alternatively.make them a better food source.

Different flavoured tribbles? We could have the flavour written onto their skin.

Because black holes and void shards. Hence why I prefer a core fusion reactor for our weapon planet. Worst case we just lose the planet instead of opening a permanent tear on reality the size of texas.

Don't forget we can have them metamorphize into egg layers to create stealth colonies.

We should get this thread to bump limit so QD can start a fresh thread in an hour and half

It would have happily died on its own, we were so close until this guy came in.

That would only work for small drones and cloned creatures large enough to contain a parasite and be turned into chimera.
>>
>>49190218
Also the whole point would be to make them different enough from Hive life for the humans to not suspect foul play, but still able to be controlled by the Queen. Or just stick a parasite in them.

you fucker, thread was supposed to die off so QD could start a new thread in...7 minutes

This lets him link to the new from the old?

But what do we do when the Tribbles reveal their true genetic prowess and evolve to be more suited against the selection pressures we've introduced and develop a countermeasure against getting eaten by drones? What would we do if the humans or scavs got ahold of such technology? A sobering thought indeed.
