You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were trying to get clear of Atlas main oil pipe before the explosives you and your sisters planted on it went off. However, you had lost contact with Haida, Kidd, and Eldridge when you had split up, so you went to search for them.

Unfortunately, it looked like they got into their trouble, as they had somehow gotten cemented onto the structure itself by one of the Abyssal platform's many spider-like worker drones.

"A little help would be nice right now!" Haida hisses as the giant lack spider continued to casually barf the thick goop it used to build up the structure all over her chest.

One swift swing from you baseball bat cracks the drone's head open, its multiple eyes bursting like little grapes as it splashes onto the water, its eight legs twitching wildly as it died. That was on obstacle out of the way.

"Hurry!" Haida urges you. Behind her, Kidd and Eldridge, whose mouths were also pasted up, yelled out muffled requests as well.

Still that icky black construction goo had already dried up, and looked to be pretty damn sturdy...

The second dev tweet about it said the new destroyer was in the same destroyer division as Ayanami. Since that's DesDiv 19 and two of the other destroyers have been around since day one (Isonami and Shikinami), that leaves Uranami.

Already, your mental clock was ticking away. At this point, you sisters probably had already set the timers and bugged out, giving you less than a minute before the fireworks started going off. With no more regard for stealth, you aim your 5-inch gun a little off to the side of Haida.

"Watch out!" You warn as you fire. Your 5-inch shell drills into the hardened goop and explodes, shattering it like grass and singing Haida's clothes a bit. However, it weakens the structure just enough for Haida to break free.

"Thanks a lot." She sighs in relief. "How much time do we have left?"

"Too little." You grimace as you aim your guns at Kidd while Haida handles Eldridge, blasting them free as well.

"Ewwwwww, I don't know if this smell is ever gonna come off..." Eldridge groans.

"YAR! I'll BE TAKING VENGEANCE ON THESE SCALLYWAGS!" Kidd roars as she draws her saber.

"Fight later, run now." You grunt as you grab Kidd the collar and tow her toward the exit. Haida does the same for Eldridge, pulling the slower destroyer escort with her.

However, your gunfire has definitely attracted attention now. Your radar cues you in to movement. Lots of movement. The builder drones were now worked up, scrambling to investigate the damage, while you can sense movement of smaller and faster entities. With Haida having to drag Eldridge along, you weren't sure if you could outrun them...

You slide to a stop and pull an 180 degree spin, putting yourself between Haida, Eldridge and the advancing Abyssals. Even if you did tow Eldridge, you probably didn't have the raw power to keep ahead of the Abyssals. Better to just delay them while Eldridge put as much distance between her and the danger zone as possible.

"Hoel?!" Haida yelps in surprise.

"Keep going!" You bark. "We'll buy you some time!"

"Well I'll be stayin' with ya!" Kidd plants her feet into the water at your side, arms crossed with a confident grin. "A pirate never runs from a fight!"

Your radar was now warning you of massive amounts of contacts. Over a dozen destroyer class Abyssals and one large, and VERY FAST Abyssal incoming on your position. Cruiser size, at least.

Maybe this should be a fight for Kidd to get away from...

"What the hell are you doing? Get outta here!" You bark to Kidd. "There's a time to fight, but this ain't it! Get clear of the blast and THEN you can start cracking heads!"

"B-but what about you?!" Kidd pauses. Even Pepe chirps with concern.

"Don't worry, I'm just gonna slow 'em down a little. I'll be right behind ya!" You assure the little wannabe pirate. "Now go!"

"F-fine!" Kidd reluctantly spins around and speeds off, leaving you to stand against the oncoming Abyssal horde alone.

And they come quickly, weaving through the maze of pipes and struts seamlessly and without losing any speed at all, like bees in a hive. Not surprisingly, since this was their home turf after all. However, surprisingly enough, none of them attack, the ugly fish monsters just hanging back a relatively safe distance, more content to pen you in than actually attack you.

And that's when you see Her.

Her pure white skin almost glowing in the darkness, this new humanoid Abyssal slowly and casually sails at you, a pair of toothed tails with heavy 8 inch guns wagging and waving behind her, their teeth chattering in anticipation.

And the girl herself filled you with unease. Not just with her unnatural pale complexion and glowing crimson eyes, but the fact that her torso looked to have been sliced open from sternum to navel, showing exposed machinery and gears underneath as if someone had tried to dissect her and she had never bothered to get the wound closed.

"Ah, so the little Ugly Duckling returns." The heavy cruiser giggles as she casually circles you, making sure to always keep a pipe or support strut between you and herself so you couldn't get a clear shot at her. "Have you reconsidered our offer~?"

What sort of game was she trying to play...?

Well, if this bitch wanted to talk, you might as well humor her. She was gonna get a nasty surprise pretty soon, anyways.

"And you consider yourselves the swans?" You give a toothy grin as you motion to the corrupted Atlas platform all around you. "You're not exactly the shining example of beauty and grace."

"Ahhh... but how is it you humans put it... 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder?'" The Heavy Cruiser chuckles. "It's not too late to change you mind, you know. I used to be like you, you know. A foolish shipgirl who put her trust in humans... and what was my reward?"

The Heavy Cruiser then motions to the gaping open wound on her belly.

"Men did this, not the Abyss. And that's the fate you and all your stupid sisters will meet eventually!" The Heavy Cruiser's smile becomes more bloodthirsty, manic. "It's not too late to join the winning side."

"Nah, I'm not interested." You put up a strong front. However, the fact that this Abyssal used to be a shipgirl unnerved you. Was that true? Or was she just trying to play mindgames with you.

"You mind tellin' me which ship you are, then?" You raise an eyebrow. You didn't really recognize her at all, though maybe it was just all those Abyssal bits. "Kinda got me at a disadvantage here."

"Oh, that doesn't really matter." The Heavy Cruiser laughs like you've asked the dumbest question ever. "Not anymore."

"Well, uh, I hate to say this again to y'all, but I'm really not interested." You reiterate, your grip on your handheld 5-incher tightening.

"Pity, we figured you'd still be resistant." The Heavy Cruiser sighs. "But maybe your twin can see the light."

You raise your 5-inch gun and aim it right at the Heavy Cruiser. Sure, it didn't pack nearly the punch her massive 8-inchers had, but up this close, it didn't really matter.

Unfortunately for you, her escorts were much quicker than you, immediately piling onto her to shield her from your fire as your gun roars. The destroyers act as effective ablative armor for the Heavy Cruiser, but fortunately for you, their quick action also hampers the Heavy Cruiser's movements, preventing her from being able to properly retaliate.

And that's when the explosives finally go off. First, it starts as a series of BANGS, like thunderclaps, as the charges go off. Then there's a brief second of silence before a flash and hiss as millions of gallons of crude oil ignites. The darkness instantly melts away to red and orange fury as a column of flame crawls up Atlas' central pipe and into the central platform-

The shock from the resulting explosion is so powerful you temporarily black out. Once you regain your sense, you find the world consumed with fire. Everything, the platform, the pipes, surrounding Abyssals, even the goddamn water itself was on fire. There were loud splashes as debris and Abyssals literally fell from the sky, the now fire wracked carcass of Atlas blazing in the night. In the background, you could hear the shrieks of missiles and the booms of cannons. The main assault had finally begun outside.

However, you find yourself facing a very alive and very angry Heavy Cruiser as she slowly but steadily advanced on you, an aura of blue frost flowing from her open wound, freezing the ocean surface she skated on and snuffing out any flame that dared try to reach her.

You decide now was a good time to get the hell out of here. Despite your own skills, you really weren't sure you could take on a goddamn Heavy Cruiser, especially an Abyssal Heavy Cruiser, in these conditions. You immediately spin around and kick up your engines to maximum power, kicking up sea spray as you try to get distance.

Thankfully, the Heavy Cruiser doesn't seem too interested in chasing you. Maybe she had better things to do? After all, her whole damn base was literally burning to the water.

Meanwhile, you burst through the last wall of flame, only to leave one hell and sail right into another. You could now see the combined American and British force sailing at full steam, guns blazing and torpedoes dropping. Hell, you could even see Victorious and White Plains' planes in the air above, the fires on Atlas being so intense they provided enough illumination for them to operate freely.

Farther back, American and British conventional destroyers unleashed volleys of missiles to help thin out what was left of the Abyssal fighter screen, while F-35s and Typhoons dove down to unleash bombs and missiles from above.

But the Abyssals, while caught by surprise, were far from beaten. Even when burning, Atlas began disgorging scores of Abyssals and swarms of planes from various holes and orifices. You could see the primary battlelines forming around Portland and Dorsetshire, who were leading the charge in.

Off to the side, you could see the rest of your destroyer squadron finally getting clear of the blazing oil platform, but almost on the opposite end. They were completely separated from the main group, but it didn't appear they were under any serious assault, the bulk of the Abyssals instead bearing down on the main force.

Even though you were tempted to get into the thick of the fighting, you were still responsible for your squadron, so you wheel yourself around on an intercept course. A couple of destroyers burst out of the inferno to try and stop you, but it was a simple matter to blast them before hey could get close enough.

"Hey!" You call out on the radio. "Can any of you guys hear me?!"

"Hoel!" You hear Haida's obviously relief. "You're okay!"

"Of course I am!" You boast.

"When we saw the fire we thought-" Heerman hesitates.

"Well now that you're here we can start kicking butt!" Johnston whoops.

"Arr, they be completely forgetting we be here!" Kidd points out, her cutlass in hand. "I say we hit them in the rear and plunder some booty while they ain't looking!"

"I'm all for that!" Eldridge chirps happily.

"But what about the main force?" Haida asks with concern. "I'm confident in Luce, Wren, and Daly, but relying on just them three to screen the whole force might be asking too much of them..."

Just for clarification, you have AEGIS-grade radar, but you don't have the necessary datalinks to distribute targeting information.

You look back at the main force, which was now getting stuck in with the Abyssal counterattack and make your decision.

"We're doubling back to support the main force." You conclude. "We've got a lot of big ships there and not enough destroyers to keep an eye on them all."

"Awwww, okay." Johnston nods.

"Well, a frontal attack is just as good as a rear attack!" Kidd nods.

"Well, what are we waiting for?" Eldridge says cheerfully as she speeds forward, taking the lead.

"Sweet Pea, this is Hoel." You call out over the radio. "You hear me?"

"Hoel?" Portland answers. "Of course you'd be alive. What's your status?"

"We've cleared the platform and we're circling around to link back up with you. Where do you need us?"

"I'm going to need you to split up your squadron to cover the others." Portland instructs. "We're holding our own against the Abyssal heavies, but their destroyers are threatening to flank us."

"Where do you need me?" You ask.

"Me, Dorsetshire, and Exeter are trying to break through their front line." Portland explains. "Achilles and Ajax are trying to cover our flanks and the carriers are right behind us providing air cover."

"And the Fletchers?" You ask.

"Running back and forth trying to cover everyone, which why I need you get here to relieve them." Portland grunts as you hear the splash a shell landing a bit too close for comfort.

"Haida, you're with me!" You bark to the Canadian destroyer.

"Roger that!" Haida nods as she forms up on you.

"The rest of you, go where Sweet Pea says you're all needed!" You instruct the rest of your squadrons as you break off to link up with the two British light cruisers.

"So what's the plan?' Haida asks as the two of you get closer and closer to the main battle.

"Kill every Abyssal we see, of course!" You roll your eyes.

"Of course." Haida sighs.

"Achilles, Ajax, I hope you two losers are still alive!" You call out on the radio. "Me and Haida are comin' in!"

"About damn time, ya bloody wank!" Achilles grunts. In the distance, you can see her and her sister ship tangling with Abyssal light cruisers and destroyers. Well, the cruisers, particularly, especially since there was a single Ne-class giving them a lot of trouble. Her sapphire eyes and tail mounted turrets continually tracked the two British light cruiser shipgirls as they kept pumping 6" shells into it while at the same time trying to dodge incoming fire from the Abyssal light cruisers and destroyers, so much so they couldn't line up a proper torpedo run on the larger cruiser.

"Well, Hoel? What's the priority?" Haida asks as she loads her double barreled 4 inch cannon.

"Let's back them up! Take out the smaller ships!" You order Haida.

"Roger!" Haida nods and with machine precision, aims her dual barreled 4 inch guns and lets loose punishing, aimed volleys. At the same time, she unleashes her torpedoes. Not at any specific target, but in a wide enough spread to force the Abyssals to disperse or eat a metal fish.

You quickly follow Haida's example, your radar easily picking out targets for you to gun down, 5 inch shells punching through Abyssal destroyers and taking chunks out of the various partially humanoid light cruisers.

"You need help?" White Plains asks, as your radar reads a flight of Helldivers circling above.

You take a quick count. Currently there were three light cruisers and nine destroyers and one Ne-class in the fray. With the heat taken off of them, Achilles and Ajax could afford to start concentrating their fire more, which was forcing the Ne farther and farther from her escorts, which were all busy dealing with you and Haida.

The Helldivers make a brave effort, the Ne-class's ice blue eye glances up for just a brief second, a sign that's noticed the incoming attack, and it immediately opens up with its AA guns. You watch as most of the planes either miss their targets or are shot down before they can even drop their bombs. The Abyssal cruiser does take a few glancing hits, but nothing that could cause major damage.

Defeated, the remaining Helldivers pull up and away from the battle.

"Sorry about that." White Plains apologizes. "I can Vicky route her planes for a second wave."

"We better figure it out fast." Haida ducks as a shell volley from one of the light cruisers passes right over her head, landing in the water right behind the both of you and showering your Rigs with sea spray. "If we don't do something about this flank soon, we're going to get overwhelmed."

"You know what time it is, Haida?" You grin as you draw your bat.

"Oh no..." Haida groans as she takes out a small combat knife, pressing against the pistol grip of her gun. "All right, let's get this over with."

"Gee, Haida, it sounds like you don't LIKE getting up close with them!" You chide.

"I'd rather avoid it." Haida sighs.

Meanwhile, Achilles and Ajax were still dancing with the Ne-class. Achilles was smartly taking advantage of Ajax's upgraded armor, hiding behind her sister ship every time the Ne-class reloaded its guns, and Ajax would expertly deflect its shells off of her Greek-style shield. However, the two light cruisers had yet to find a chink in the Ne's armor.

"Let's go, Haida!" You roar as you charge forward, 5 inch guns blazing and bat waving in the air.

You and Haida both sail in, guns blazing, bats and knives swinging. The Abyssals aren't prepared for this sudden aggression and are caught flat footed. You drill a shell right into a destroyer's eye socket, blowing out most of its skull, while you swing at a second one and take its lower jaw off. Haida puts six rounds right into the midsection of another destroyer, sidesteps another destroyer that tries to lunge at her, and stabs her knife straight down into its spine before pulling away.

Meanwhile, Achilles and Ajax finally start making headway. The Ne-class slows down just a bit to turn away from Achilles' torpedo spread, which gives Ajax the opening she needs to sprint forward in a sudden burst of speed, driving her shield right into the cruiser's body, knocking it flat on its back. Achilles immediately starts pumping 6 inch gunfire into the downed Ne as it struggles to regain its footing.

Meanwhile, you see the remaining Abyssal forces in your area begin to pull back. Without the Ne to oversee them, they fall back to their instincts and flee in the face of yours and Haida's ferocious assault. You watch as they flee back to the burning ruins of Atlas.

Random whoops and cheers of joy over the radio seem to indicate the rest of the battle was going well, too.

"Come on, Haida!" You urge your partner to keep up as you chase the routed Abyssals.

"Aren't we getting a bit too reckless now?" Haida pants as she tries to match you pace. You almost forgot that she's still using her old steam boilers instead of your modern diesel electric engines.

"How is it you always say? Whoever dares wins?"

"That's British, I'm Canadian." Haida scowls.

"Same thing, right?" You shrug.

Haida doesn't even grace your comment with a response, merely rolling her eyes and making sure her weapons were properly loaded.

"H-Hoel!" You hear Anna's voice call out over the radio. "D-do you read me?"

"Of course I do!" You grin as you dodge some sporadic return fire, nailing a fleeing Abyssal destroyer in the stern in response.

"I-It looks like the Abyssals are covering the retreat of a special unit!" Anna warns. "It's heading straight for the Stormwall! Only you and Haida are in position to intercept!"

"What are we looking at?" Haida asks as she guns down another hapless destroyer.

"It's small, only four destroyers and one contact t-that looks to be h-heavy cruiser!" Anna explains. "Also one completely unknown unit! We think it's a similar class to the super Abyssal we encountered on Midway!"

Fucking wonderful.

"Of course, the Science Division would greatly appreciate if either new unit could be brought back for study, dead or alive." The Captain adds coldly, obviously not happy with their apparent willingness to risk two shipgirls. "You don't have to completely destroy them, just slow them down so the main force can catch up and mop up. We'll provide what air support we can."

You look over in the direction Anna indicated, and indeed, you could see several contacts making best speed towards the safety of the Stormwall. That Heavy Cruiser was definitely among them. Was that unknown unit the reason why she broke off her pursuit of you...?

"All right, we're going after them!" You say cheerily.

Haida just gives you a mildly horrified look. The both of you had been lucky so far by continually pushing, but this was just getting out of hand! The two of you speed around the burning wreck of Atlas, taking care to dodge floating and falling debris, and you're immediately on the tail of the retreating convoy.

You unleash harassing fire from your 5-inch guns, but the majority of the shells bounce or detonate uselessly off of the Heavy Cruiser's armor. You then unleash a close range torpedo spread, but the Abyssal seems to have already anticipated your attack, and maneuvers to slide through the gaps between your torpedoes.

And then she responds with her own thunderous volley, her tailed 8 inch guns booming loudly.

Your composite armor protects you, but only just barely, managing to deflect the two shell that hit you away from your vital components. However, it still felt like somebody launched a jackhammer right into your chest and gut, and your vision blurs and spins as you reel from the impact.

"Oh dear, I hope I didn't break you too hard." The Heavy Cruiser giggles in a taunting tone. That bitch.

"This is Wild Card flight incoming." You hear a female voice report. "Coming in hot and loaded. Just give us a target."

You eye the Heavy Cruiser. There was little chance of you actually taking her out in a one on one fight, especially in your current condition, and you'd love nothing more than to see her get pasted. However, there was the real objective to worry about, too. Even Haida would have trouble trying to get through four destroyers on her own, and that convoy was getting perilously close to the Stormwall...
