Not really a /tg/ related film but to me, Fellowship of the Ring has some /tg/-related nostalgia for me since it was roughly around the time I started D&D. My uncle gave me his AD&D books roughly after Fellowship released (he just bought the 3e books) and I started playing that with my siblings. Then when we got the DVD of Fellowship, me and my siblings would make commentary on what ability/skill checks and saving throws the characters made during the film.

i agree, but it was fun to watch. that cheezy shit was there to make the good stuff actually look good.

13th Warrior is how you run an adventuring party.

Six-string Samurai is how you run a player duo

Galaxina is comedy sci-fi. watch before you play OSR sci-fi games. same goes Zardoz.

Willow is pretty much Star Wars as fantasy.

This is one of those movies where the term "ultra violence" is a massive understatement. Almost like literal gore porn, it's a rare gem that is just utterly disgusting and yet Rutger Hauer is giving his all in it especially during the hospital scene in front of the infant newborns. Who thought this was a good idea for a film? This was supposed to be just a joke trailer, not an actual thing.

TRUTH

Its a good thing all the opinions of this movie are horrible - it sets it up to being laughable garbage, only to deluge you with just how surprising the movie is as a whole. Arnold is really good casting choice for playing Howard's version of Conan - short on words, awkward sounding compared to civilized folk because he is a man of the hills, a goddamn beast in physique where you know he can pop your neck down to a stump even when he's just sitting next to the fireplace. Sure there's a slew of campy moments, but the movie is so embedded in a the ancient generation that is the 80s a lot of its shortcomings can be viewed as 'that's just how they did things those days.'

Also, Basil Poledouris as the composer instantly bumps every movie he scores 3 points higher than it should be. Theology/Civilization remains one of the best tracks ever for travel montage

Dr. Who is cringe as fuck, agreed, but Monty Python only seems cliche and samey because it inspired everything to come after it for decades. It's like complaining that LOTR has orcs elves dwarves and humans and that's so stereotypical, when the only reason that it's stereotypical is that LOTR did it first.

Dr. Who sucks because these days it's trying too hard to be Douglas Adams without doing any of the legwork. It's like someone collected some bulletpoints on what makes Bong sci-fi comedy funny and interesting, and they took all of the superficial garbage without capturing any of the substance. Personally I blame the collapse of classical education.
>>
>>49510338
The most baffling thing about Conan the Barbarian is that it manages to actually have contemplative moments that FEEL like Howard's Conan... Acted by Ahnold.

I really can't wait until the next one comes out with him as old King Conan.

I have always felt that the LOTR movies are horribly paced and the last one is a bit of an anticlimax with how it wraps everything up. However, I do enjoy it a lot on a technical level, the craftsmanship that went into the movie is amazing, also visual design, the soundtrack and cast is just great.

I also consider it to be surprsingly faithful for a Hollywood adaptation of any fantasy story.

I'm still amazed how they managed to reused scenes from the first movie in pretty much all of them, and by reuse I mean take the exact footage and just use it in two movies.

Plus if I recall things right I think the third one basically has the same plot as the first just slightly different, though I'm not sure if the movies are supposed to be real sequels of each other or just different tellings of a similar story.

I'd still recommend if you're into cheesy old fantasy movies like I am.

Personally, I thought Momoa was fine as Conan, and faithful to the character. As were the whores he rescues near the beginning. It's that most of the rest of the movie, from the plot, set and villains that just looked so fake. Every fight scene is on a set and they have to use every corner of it.

Which is funny, because the original had plenty of scenes that were clearly sets, but it managed to feel real.

You get a few okay episodes here and there, but the storylines are just awful.

I mean really, go to amazon or whatever and watch a random episode of any one of the last several seasons, particularly the last 2. There's a high probability that the entire plot will be a bunch of barely coherent nonsense where the conflict that is the subject of the episode makes no fucking sense, is full of plot holes and is inevitably resolved by a glaring deus ex machina while the doctor waves his arms around like cretin and dramatic music plays in the background.

Pretty much any big dramatic set piece they come up with like the T-Rex in London ends up being empty spectacle and the show is full of that. Big dramatic scenes that are actually completely fucking inconsequential and are nearly resolved without meaningful consequence.

There's maybe two or three good episodes a series and the rest are so god-awful it's like trying to pick marshmallows out of an open sewer with your teeth.

Old who has plenty of bad acting and horrible production values, but If I watch it I don't feel like my intelligence is being insulted, and I can't say that about nuWho.
>>
>>49514232

I think the problem with new Who is they're trying to make Doctor Who. I realize that doesn't make any sense. But Old Who, the shows can feel so different that if they'd changed the character name you wouldn't know it's the same show. Hell, even just the Baker seasons could range from gothic horror to comedy. You get the sense that old who was being made by people who were trying to make a show didn't really care about maintaining the feel of it, and were willing to try different things. nuWho is a thing, and it's constantly trying to be that thing. So you get the same kind of plots, the same bombastic speeches, the same god-like doctor, the same fucking "dun dun dun dundun dahdun" Murray Gold bullshit "this is how! You should feel now! This is the! Exciting Part!" soundtracks, and general air of unearned insufferable portentousness.

The format of old doctor who was different from new doctor who, the stories ran in multi-episode serials instead of single self contained episodes. That worked a lot better since even though the serials had often had vastly different themes they carried much more weight and atmosphere because they developed and played out over a longer time so you had more time to give a fuck about the outcome.

Not to mention that the quality of writer working at the BBC has dropped through the floor over time.
>>
Flight of Dragons is an old favorite of mine. If I'm honest, any of Rankin-Bass's non-stop-motion fantasy stuff is nice, if only for the art style. But Flight of Dragons Definitely takes the cake.

I mean, it's as /tg/ related as it comes, as the main character has literally created a fantasy board game, before he gets whisked off on his magical adventure.

Add to that theorizing about how dragons actually worked, magical fine print saving and screwing the day, manly knights dying manly deaths, and James Earl Jones hamming it up as the villain Ommadon among other things. But I think it's the approach the movie takes to the old question of science-vs-magic that really wins me over.

It's not the best movie, but I always have fun watching it.

but wait, there's a fantasy movie that's practically straight out of D&D!
> possibly during the start or mid-point of the movie, there's a heroine doing some acrobatics in a old tower escaping some clay golems of some kind, and as the chase goes over a bridge, it breaks and one of the clay golems falls and dissolves in the water below.
> i stupidly change the channel because it was french.

later, there's apparently a whole party (like 6+ characters) going through a tunnel with metal chompers, like in the prince of persia game. the last set are too fast, so the milfy sorceress sacrifices herself using her body to stop the first set and jam the trap, and her son? apprentice? laments on her death.

to my regret, i should've watched it all. in retrospect it seemed like a great D&D style movie. (without actually being the D&D movie)

I liked Secret of Kells a lot more than Song of the Sea.
Both are absolutely amazing - like perhaps the best European animated movies made in the last two decades, like Miyazaki's work levels of good, but I thought Song of the Sea had some serious pacing issues and the story kinda meandered without going anywhere for quite a considerable part.

Plus, Secret of Kells had one of the best endings I've ever seen in a fairtytale and Song of the Sea seemed a bit underwhelming compared to that.

But again: both are fucking great.

>It'ss definitely an impressive piece of art, but the story kinda just ...happened.
Actually, the story is god damn fantastic. Like - one of the best stories I've seen in a fairytale yet.

The reason why some people disliked it is because they have grown spoiled and dumb, and were annoyed by the fact that the story told a much more mature and meaningful concept than they are used to.
People really grew kinda dumb with the onslaught of cliché western fantastic stories, which is one of the reasons the movie triggered such a mixed reception. It was also (incorrectly) accused of being pro-religious propaganda, which I found particularly amusing.

>What was so great about it exactly?
The fact that it told a story about A) the importance of beauty itself, and B) that not all evil will be defeated, and that defeating the evil was never really the point.
It's a story about finding a good reason to live for, not about thinking all the miserable parts of your life will magically go away and be solved. Which is an exceptionally rare and exceptionally important message especially in this day and age and in children's cartoons. It teaches children to find peace with life, even with the harsh parts of it, by looking for beauty in places they might have not look for it in the first place: all of that while not even in the slightest the importance of things like courage and bravery.

Most people were pissed at it because it actively undermined the established clichés of the genre by having a magic mcguffin that actually does not stop the evil and that actually isn't even magic in the first place, and the story just simply letting the evil wash over the world with very little done to punish and stop it.
Except that is much more pertinent message to give sometimes. The true magic in Secret of Kells is art and the hope that it represents, the true evil is thinking that you can change the world and ironically losing that hope in the process.
That is actually some clever and deep shit right there, the sort of message that one might not want to hear, but needs to hear even more.
That is some beauty of storytelling, really.

First of all, they evil does not actually win. The book is saved in the end. Hell, even the Abbot and many of the inhabitants of Kells survive. But really, THE BOOK IS FUCKING SAVED, and a bunch of fucking vikings are murdered viciously for trying to destroy it.

Second of all, teaching children that evil can always be defeated in a straight forward manner is actually equally as terrible message. Pangur Ban still makes my hair stand on end whenever I hear it.

well someone did mention Event Horizon
there's also this movie but it's too campy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0264508/
speaking of non american movies i wish i could recommend Fantaghiro but i have never watched a full movie, being saturday afternoon and all that. also not sure how it would help GMing ideas but she's cute and that's what i most remember
there's also this end-of-80s movie about a blonde alien landcrashing in the medieval era and lasering people and dragons around but i never ever found it on internet
and there's these two Sean Connery movies which (along with Time Bandits) are only worht mentioning because it's god-damned young Sean Connery

I watched it at eight years old, while home from school with a high fever.
This is probably the best circumstance to see Wizards.

>Hey,have you read Solaris?
>What if instead of somehow benevolent planet,we make Solaris a fucking realm of Khorne?

still,the movie is pretty good

The Fall was so good. The visual design is worth seeing the movie for alone, but it's also coupled with a strong and genuinely touching plot. 10/10.

For me the top /tg/ movie is Dark City, which is just perfectly atmospheric and haunting, with a pretty great cast. You just have to mute the intro until it swoops down onto the city all the way, or the studio-mandated opening narration will spoil the plot.

To be fair it was cool even it it didn't make sense.

I hate brony culture and MLP, but The Last Unicorn is easily one of the best animated films I have ever seen.
>>
>>49507062
Daily reminder 2nd film was crap.
But a good kind of crap.
The kind of crap you get when your GM wants to run D&D campaign full-on stereotypes and cliches.
The kind of crap you only start to appriciate when everyone and everything around treats itself dead-serious

And true, Barbarian doesn't even get 1/10 of the credit it deserves. I mean average fantasy flick is STILL trying to imitate what Barbarian pulled off at first try.
>>
>>49523613
I just came to put out Reservoir Dogs.
>>
Even though it's low budget, I enjoyed SAGA: Curse of the Shadow.

It's worth a one time watch.
>>
>>49523652
Barbarian is so good because everything went right. The writing is good, the cast is good, the set and prop design and the locations are all fantastic, the cinematography is good-- it's clearly a labour of love, and it all comes together to create an intense and pervading mood that holds the film together and lets it treat its themes with a gravitas that Destroyer and 2011 lack.

I think both of the later Conans are also really fun, but Barbarian is truly great.

I also think that the reason 2011 is the way it is is that a lot of people saw Barbarian as kids and then never again, and didn't notice at the time how strong all of the stuff that wasn't action was; then when they remember the film as adults, what comes to mind is more the ways it's similar to Destroyer than the ways its different, and that's what influences exceptions for Conan 2011.
>>
>>49523726
Interesting. If your pic related is the movie you're talking about, I know it as Curse of the Dragonslayer.

I agree that it's a lot of fun and worth a look, though.

I thought this movie was the perfect amount of camp and action, definitely a 10/10 scifi B-movie in my book.

can you cut it out with MLP? The Last Unicorn is based on a fantasy novel by Peter S. Beagle
you're all acting like "The BFG? i don't watch mickey mouse shit, sorry" for crying out loud, it's got nothing to do

Seriously? Probably the best amateur tg-related and tg-based stuff in existence and not mentioned even once.
It's even good outside the cheesy context of (after all pretty hermetic) tg-context

Surprised this one hasn't been brought up yet. It's a classic example of what happens when the players and DM throw seriousness to the side and just start trying to see how much they can get away with.

Gamers 1 and 2 are both pretty charming. The third one has its moments, but its weaker overall.

In the vein of Gamers, THACO is a fantastic film that is kind of like Waiting for Godot for fatguys. The whole thing is available free on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOgtY7vMeDo

The only time where ending tailored for the studio was better than the original director's vision
>>
>>49524102
There is nothing to understand. It was absolutely retarded, incoherent schlock without any plot whatsoever and just dumb action sequence after sequence, sliced with quasi-intellectual bullshit inbetween.
Even fucking Jennifer's Body is better as tg movie, while made in the same vein of showing hot chicks intead of plot.

Kung Fu Hustle is a perfect /tg/ material when running anything even remotely related with wuxia

I was taking a math class at community college some years ago, and doing homework outside before class one day. One of my classmates came up to me and asked if we could work together, so we start doing some math shit. While I'm flipping through my notes he sees some some of my fantasy drawings or whatever I had in there and he starts telling me about heavy metal.

Now I'm a white dude, he's a black dude, not full on du-rag and t-shirt with looney tunes and gold airbrush, but he probably had friends like that. And he's telling me about heavy metal and it's like his favorite movie, I had heard of it but never watched it and didn't know much about it. Got introduced to a new, long-running facet of tg related stuff from an unexpected place, and it was great.

I want to make this into a setting. Players are homeless people fighting back against a super powerful crime family.

>You get a few okay episodes here and there, but the storylines are just awful
yep thats doctor who for ya, I still like it though but damn are some of the episodes just stupid. You get some good ones like some of the cybermen episodes, and then you get full retard ones such as believe in Tennant Jesus, and SANDMEN.

Yes.

Nothing about virgins though. Though the evil wizard's dragon Bryagh does seem to have a taste for cannibalism.
>>
>>49524255
Well that's you. I just watched the director's cut and it made perfect sense. I think a lot of people just couldn't integrate the crazy robots, dragons, nazis and other bullshit with the story of sexual slavery and abuse underneath it.

As regards to /tg/, it's basically RIFTS: The Music Video: The Movie!!!
