AHHHH"Autistic people who quote the Princess Bride make me want to slit my exgirlfriend's throat with a sharp plastic shard from the movie box. God I hate that movie.>>49505343Wizards is top-tier.
>>49506004But it's a pretty funny movie though, you gotta admit anon.
>>49506024Nah, it's really kinda gay. It's rarely funny and the whole "you killed my father prepare to die" shtick was so autistic I cringed hard halfway thorugh the movie. It's a kid's movie, I don't really see how anyone over the age of 18 can find it funny at all.
Not really a /tg/ related film but to me, Fellowship of the Ring has some /tg/-related nostalgia for me since it was roughly around the time I started D&D. My uncle gave me his AD&D books roughly after Fellowship released (he just bought the 3e books) and I started playing that with my siblings. Then when we got the DVD of Fellowship, me and my siblings would make commentary on what ability/skill checks and saving throws the characters made during the film.
>>49505343>"DELETE THIS" the ending
>>49506273How old are you anon? It might be because you've been so inundated with references to it, now so pervasive in our culture, that by time you saw the actual source material, it was so bland, generic, and cliche that it didn't have a chance to be enjoyed.
Your Highness was basically a D&D campaign with a that guy and a magical realming GM
>>49506273>Monty python isn't funny
>>49506696although the that guy does eventually learn to enjoy the game
>>49505343Wizards is overrated. The story is too bad to even be cheesy fun, and the animation just comes off as embarrassingly cheap rather than charmingly low budget.
>>49506696That movie is terrible but it holds a special place in my heart for adding "fuckening" to my vocabulary.
>>49506555i'd have to say it's /tg/ related, it's an adaptation of one of the fundamental seeds of modern ttrpg's
>>49506273>seinfield is trashteir sitcom

>>49505343Conan the Barbarian.
>>49506029>Ehh, we have run out of money>Whatever, just put a filter over the scenes that were to be rotoscopied
>>49506939I always liked more Frasier, even as a kid.
>>49506004>>49506273So what's it like living without joy and taking yourself way too seriously?
>>49506975This movie doesn't really get the credit it deserves. The second one was total camp and the latest one was just more over the top American action flick BS but Barbarian is a fine film and definitely one of the few good D&Dish type movies of all time.
>>49506899i agree, but it was fun to watch. that cheezy shit was there to make the good stuff actually look good.13th Warrior is how you run an adventuring party.Six-string Samurai is how you run a player duoGalaxina is comedy sci-fi. watch before you play OSR sci-fi games. same goes Zardoz.Willow is pretty much Star Wars as fantasy.Dragonslayers is niceBaron Munchausen is hilarious
>>49506029Fuck that looks beautiful
>>49506004I'm sorry she hurt you so much.
>>49507062It's a great movie overall if you can look past Arnold's line deliveries. It does help that he has very few lines throughout the movie.

>>49507070>13th Warrior is how you run an adventuring party.Would it work as a straight up historic game, though? I mean, it's not like there was really any fantasy in the movie.
watch Fire and Ice if you haven't yet
>>49507115The 13'th Warrior is an adaptation of Beowulf.
The pilot episode for Korgoth of Barbaria is pretty fucking sweet in terms of ruthless low brow fantasy violence
>>49505359This is one of those movies where the term "ultra violence" is a massive understatement. Almost like literal gore porn, it's a rare gem that is just utterly disgusting and yet Rutger Hauer is giving his all in it especially during the hospital scene in front of the infant newborns. Who thought this was a good idea for a film? This was supposed to be just a joke trailer, not an actual thing.
>>49506975This. It has everything - barbarians, rogues, sorcerers, shamans, witches, valkyries, knights, towers, castles, temples and awesome landscapes. It is hard to beat this as the most /tg/.

>>49506733>>49506939Neither of them are any good. Monty Python is the same "lol we're so random" bullshit that fat 15 year old Dr. Who cunts enjoy. Reminds me of that FOAMMMM cringe video. And Seinfeld is outdated as fuck, tries to be all philosophical when in reality it's shallow trash and it's not even funny (it has a laugh track for fucks' sake).>>49507034I don't, faggot. >>49509634Is this some horsefucker shit? Because this better not be some horsefucker shit. I don't want to sit down and watch a movie about a fucking unicorn unless it's actually good.
>>49509738Yes in the sense that at one point the Unicorn transforms into a naked human female. She's the last Unicorn because a giant flaming bull is chasing them into the ocean, where they become the crests of waves.Christopher Lee has a voice role. It's badass.

>>49509821>Yes in the sense that at one point the Unicorn transforms into a naked human female.I take this sentence to mean that there are (non-horse) titties involved. Good enough for me.
>>49509738I was afraid it would be that when I first was going to watch it, but trust me, it is a trippy, depressing and wonderful adventure which examines the human condition far more than most media (its also really weird, in a surreal way).It is closely adapted from one of the top 20 fantasy books of all time, and it is easy to see why
In no specific order:Knight's Tale13th WarriorJohnny MnemonicHard Candy
You remind me of the babe.
>>49507771so what DO you find humor in, then?
>>49510265The guy should have gotten the real pills.
>>49506975>>49507062TRUTHIts a good thing all the opinions of this movie are horrible - it sets it up to being laughable garbage, only to deluge you with just how surprising the movie is as a whole. Arnold is really good casting choice for playing Howard's version of Conan - short on words, awkward sounding compared to civilized folk because he is a man of the hills, a goddamn beast in physique where you know he can pop your neck down to a stump even when he's just sitting next to the fireplace. Sure there's a slew of campy moments, but the movie is so embedded in a the ancient generation that is the 80s a lot of its shortcomings can be viewed as 'that's just how they did things those days.'Also, Basil Poledouris as the composer instantly bumps every movie he scores 3 points higher than it should be. Theology/Civilization remains one of the best tracks ever for travel montagehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMVmW0k9jZI
>>49507771Dr. Who is cringe as fuck, agreed, but Monty Python only seems cliche and samey because it inspired everything to come after it for decades. It's like complaining that LOTR has orcs elves dwarves and humans and that's so stereotypical, when the only reason that it's stereotypical is that LOTR did it first.Dr. Who sucks because these days it's trying too hard to be Douglas Adams without doing any of the legwork. It's like someone collected some bulletpoints on what makes Bong sci-fi comedy funny and interesting, and they took all of the superficial garbage without capturing any of the substance. Personally I blame the collapse of classical education.
>>49510338The most baffling thing about Conan the Barbarian is that it manages to actually have contemplative moments that FEEL like Howard's Conan... Acted by Ahnold.I really can't wait until the next one comes out with him as old King Conan.>Fun fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger's legitimate son has no real interest in bodybuilding... But his illegitimate half-Mexican son does>Arnold now trains his half-aztec bastard in the arts of Austrian Hugeonomics>He will probably be governor of California in twenty years

This one and part two. It's how everyone wants to play D&D. Really fun movies just don't be completely sober. Tavern brawls with pig faced brutes, a child torturing evil sorcerer, a protagonist who tries to rape a girl he just saved from bandits and not a single ugly woman. What's not to love?
>40k: The Prequel
>>49506004Holy shit dude, I just said I liked the movie. Regulate your caffeine intake.
>>49506901"Fuckening" is the word you got from that movie. Not making every character you have take points in Profession (Pintsman) and Craft (Cocksmith)
>>49505343>huh what's this>watch it on YouTube>that fucking endinggoddammit my sides, the scene in the Op's pic caught me completely off guard.
>>49507771>I don't, faggot. I laugh at a lot of things. But not trash-tier comedy made for eight year olds. Did you not notice who was being read the book in The Princess Bride? A FUCKING EIGHT YEAR OLD.There is a lot of of childish silly things that doesn't do it for me, but I don't have a childish kneejerk about it like you do. It's like you're an edgy pseudointellectual twelve year old trying to impress the adults.
>>49506975I was gonna say Fellowship of the Ring, but this is what my heart and dick said.
For total party kill theme: The ThingFor general fun times, The Two TowersFor rounding up the gang: Seven Samurai
>>49506555I have always felt that the LOTR movies are horribly paced and the last one is a bit of an anticlimax with how it wraps everything up. However, I do enjoy it a lot on a technical level, the craftsmanship that went into the movie is amazing, also visual design, the soundtrack and cast is just great.I also consider it to be surprsingly faithful for a Hollywood adaptation of any fantasy story.
>>49510338Yeah, the entire thing does feel more Howard than the new 2011 adaptation. Arnold just have a sincerity and charisma about him that Momoa just doesn't possess. It also has a much stronger supporting cast and it looks like Frazetta painting the live action movie.

Brotherhood of the Wolf gets my vote.Just a hint of magic and monsters, but grounded in a good old fashioned beat 'em up.
>>49513611That movie had the coolest fucking music
>>49513667And on the other side of the scale, Dog Soldiers. The best way to run a one-shot Only War horror/action session.
>>49511234I'm still amazed how they managed to reused scenes from the first movie in pretty much all of them, and by reuse I mean take the exact footage and just use it in two movies.Plus if I recall things right I think the third one basically has the same plot as the first just slightly different, though I'm not sure if the movies are supposed to be real sequels of each other or just different tellings of a similar story.I'd still recommend if you're into cheesy old fantasy movies like I am. >>49513315I don't recall much rape. If there was it wasn't 90%.
>>49513718Or a WtF action/catharsis session.

>>49513500I've only seen the American version of this, but it was fantastic anywayBasically a Gamma World game where everyone is a bard
>>49513748>>49513841Going by the extended look it was 80% rape
>>49512467Personally, I thought Momoa was fine as Conan, and faithful to the character. As were the whores he rescues near the beginning. It's that most of the rest of the movie, from the plot, set and villains that just looked so fake. Every fight scene is on a set and they have to use every corner of it.Which is funny, because the original had plenty of scenes that were clearly sets, but it managed to feel real.
>>49513808Is this a parody of Game of Thrones?
>>49514093No, but they do bring it up to poke fun at the idea of the main characters being in any real danger.
>>49513667You've undersold this. It's a period french action movie with Iroquois-fu, bone swords, french whores, tits, a bit of philosophy, and some more tits for good measure.
>>49513645You get a few okay episodes here and there, but the storylines are just awful.I mean really, go to amazon or whatever and watch a random episode of any one of the last several seasons, particularly the last 2. There's a high probability that the entire plot will be a bunch of barely coherent nonsense where the conflict that is the subject of the episode makes no fucking sense, is full of plot holes and is inevitably resolved by a glaring deus ex machina while the doctor waves his arms around like cretin and dramatic music plays in the background.Pretty much any big dramatic set piece they come up with like the T-Rex in London ends up being empty spectacle and the show is full of that. Big dramatic scenes that are actually completely fucking inconsequential and are nearly resolved without meaningful consequence. There's maybe two or three good episodes a series and the rest are so god-awful it's like trying to pick marshmallows out of an open sewer with your teeth.Old who has plenty of bad acting and horrible production values, but If I watch it I don't feel like my intelligence is being insulted, and I can't say that about nuWho.
>>49514232I think the problem with new Who is they're trying to make Doctor Who. I realize that doesn't make any sense. But Old Who, the shows can feel so different that if they'd changed the character name you wouldn't know it's the same show. Hell, even just the Baker seasons could range from gothic horror to comedy. You get the sense that old who was being made by people who were trying to make a show didn't really care about maintaining the feel of it, and were willing to try different things. nuWho is a thing, and it's constantly trying to be that thing. So you get the same kind of plots, the same bombastic speeches, the same god-like doctor, the same fucking "dun dun dun dundun dahdun" Murray Gold bullshit "this is how! You should feel now! This is the! Exciting Part!" soundtracks, and general air of unearned insufferable portentousness.

>>49514441The format of old doctor who was different from new doctor who, the stories ran in multi-episode serials instead of single self contained episodes. That worked a lot better since even though the serials had often had vastly different themes they carried much more weight and atmosphere because they developed and played out over a longer time so you had more time to give a fuck about the outcome. Not to mention that the quality of writer working at the BBC has dropped through the floor over time.
Flight of Dragons is an old favorite of mine. If I'm honest, any of Rankin-Bass's non-stop-motion fantasy stuff is nice, if only for the art style. But Flight of Dragons Definitely takes the cake.I mean, it's as /tg/ related as it comes, as the main character has literally created a fantasy board game, before he gets whisked off on his magical adventure.Add to that theorizing about how dragons actually worked, magical fine print saving and screwing the day, manly knights dying manly deaths, and James Earl Jones hamming it up as the villain Ommadon among other things. But I think it's the approach the movie takes to the old question of science-vs-magic that really wins me over. It's not the best movie, but I always have fun watching it.

Secret of Kells. HUGELY underrated fairytale/fantasy movie with some absolutely stunning visuals, music, surprisingly mature story.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi8sInU1pHo
>>49515212Mah wizard. By the way one of the great few movies where the bad guy wins.
>>49516182Needs some Secret of NIMH, but pretty gud.
Song of the seas. Absolutely stunning movie. Beautiful animation, amazing music. Irish fairytales as a main theme.
>>49517935I lved her introduction."Is this your cat?""Wah?""Well, is it?"
>>49517955I liked Secret of Kells a lot more than Song of the Sea. Both are absolutely amazing - like perhaps the best European animated movies made in the last two decades, like Miyazaki's work levels of good, but I thought Song of the Sea had some serious pacing issues and the story kinda meandered without going anywhere for quite a considerable part. Plus, Secret of Kells had one of the best endings I've ever seen in a fairtytale and Song of the Sea seemed a bit underwhelming compared to that. But again: both are fucking great. >>49517973I loved her opening narration. "I have seen The Book. The Book that will turn darkness in light." still sends shivers down my spine. Also, the way the portrayed her fear of Crom Cruach was just... terrifying. Like legitimately fucking scary.
>>49507070>DragonslayerReally good and surprisingly brutal for a Disney movie.
>>49506696Your Highness and Crod Mandoon both feel more like an actual table top story than they have any right to. On that note, throwing in Crod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire. Its not exactly a movie, but its close, and it really captures the incompetence of the average first-time-players party quite well while also just being hilarious besides.
>>49507196>>49507209Just putting out an addendum that there's a LOT of rape in this movie.
>>49514880>It's almost like people didn't have sticks up their collective asses and didn't take offense and demand the censorship of everything back then.yeah they did. The 1977 Hobbit by Rankin and Bass. This was the shit when I was young, and was the reason why I got into fantasy.Plus Richard Boone was a perfect Smaug, and was how I always saw dragons growing up.https://youtu.be/Or8G_jDcLNo

You would be hard pressed to find a television series that took itself less seriously than Sienfeld.
>>49505343A Field In England is surprisingly appropriate for a D&D game where everyone is on drugs. >>49506975Always good. >>49510338>>49510509I've never understood why people bitch about that movie or think that the 2011 overdramatic "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO" fest even remotely compares or represents the original stories better. >>49517935It'ss definitely an impressive piece of art, but the story kinda just ...happened.I mean, I can enjoy a movie on a purely visual level, but I can how a lot of people would dislike it.
>>49519458>It'ss definitely an impressive piece of art, but the story kinda just ...happened.Actually, the story is god damn fantastic. Like - one of the best stories I've seen in a fairytale yet.The reason why some people disliked it is because they have grown spoiled and dumb, and were annoyed by the fact that the story told a much more mature and meaningful concept than they are used to. People really grew kinda dumb with the onslaught of cliché western fantastic stories, which is one of the reasons the movie triggered such a mixed reception. It was also (incorrectly) accused of being pro-religious propaganda, which I found particularly amusing.
>>49514448Nah, parents back were fine with sexual subtext and upfront weirdness in their childrens cartoons because they wanted to break free from the pretentions of the old generations. >>49519637>What was so great about it exactly? The fact that it told a story about A) the importance of beauty itself, and B) that not all evil will be defeated, and that defeating the evil was never really the point. It's a story about finding a good reason to live for, not about thinking all the miserable parts of your life will magically go away and be solved. Which is an exceptionally rare and exceptionally important message especially in this day and age and in children's cartoons. It teaches children to find peace with life, even with the harsh parts of it, by looking for beauty in places they might have not look for it in the first place: all of that while not even in the slightest the importance of things like courage and bravery. Most people were pissed at it because it actively undermined the established clichés of the genre by having a magic mcguffin that actually does not stop the evil and that actually isn't even magic in the first place, and the story just simply letting the evil wash over the world with very little done to punish and stop it. Except that is much more pertinent message to give sometimes. The true magic in Secret of Kells is art and the hope that it represents, the true evil is thinking that you can change the world and ironically losing that hope in the process. That is actually some clever and deep shit right there, the sort of message that one might not want to hear, but needs to hear even more. That is some beauty of storytelling, really.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
>>49519821>The fact that it told a story about A) the importance of beauty itself, and B) that not all evil will be defeated, and that defeating the evil was never really the point.>It's a story about finding a good reason to live for, not about thinking all the miserable parts of your life will magically go away and be solved. >>49505343The Goonies/Big Trouble in Little China
>>49519823The cover looks like a far more exciting story than I imagine the film was.
>>49519932>Wouldn't call it the greatest story eva though...Better than 99% of all stories told in cartoons, really. Not sure what your measures for a good story are, but meangfulness, relatability and actual relevance to real world are criteria I'd personally chose. And by those, yeah. It's one of the best I've ever seen in a child story, and in pop-culture movie production in general.
>>49519823I wonder what made Jousting helmets so popular back then. They were always the type you saw whenever plate armour cropped up.
>>49507079Its red.I mean theres flash parodies betyer looking than that.
>>49519821If I had to guess they got pissed off because 'its okay to let evil win' is a horrible message to tell children.
>>49508452Heavy Metal is basically animated album art. It's interesting but I was too sober when I last watched it.
>>49520284First of all, they evil does not actually win. The book is saved in the end. Hell, even the Abbot and many of the inhabitants of Kells survive. But really, THE BOOK IS FUCKING SAVED, and a bunch of fucking vikings are murdered viciously for trying to destroy it. Second of all, teaching children that evil can always be defeated in a straight forward manner is actually equally as terrible message. And if you'd watch the movie, you'd really know that the message is everything BUT "just let the evil win." I mean for fuck sake Brendan even fucking challenges and defeats Crom. Have you even watched the damn thing?
>>49520340I am commenting on how you chose to describe its message, don't get pissy. And don't wilfully misrepresent what I am saying either. That's just pointless spite.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dune (in any iteration) obviously the books were better, but without the 4 hour movie, I would never have found the books.Or the Star Wars influencing Watership Down.Or even John Carter (the movie i have not seen, but if faithful at all to the Howard books, is basically a Mary Sue character of mythic proportions, and that's fa/tg/uy right there.)

You just have to mute the intro until it swoops down onto the city all the way, or the studio-mandated opening narration will spoil the plot.

I mean average fantasy flick is STILL trying to imitate what Barbarian pulled off at first try.
>>49523613I just came to put out Reservoir Dogs.
Even though it's low budget, I enjoyed SAGA: Curse of the Shadow. It's worth a one time watch.
>>49523652Barbarian is so good because everything went right. The writing is good, the cast is good, the set and prop design and the locations are all fantastic, the cinematography is good-- it's clearly a labour of love, and it all comes together to create an intense and pervading mood that holds the film together and lets it treat its themes with a gravitas that Destroyer and 2011 lack.I think both of the later Conans are also really fun, but Barbarian is truly great.I also think that the reason 2011 is the way it is is that a lot of people saw Barbarian as kids and then never again, and didn't notice at the time how strong all of the stuff that wasn't action was; then when they remember the film as adults, what comes to mind is more the ways it's similar to Destroyer than the ways its different, and that's what influences exceptions for Conan 2011.
>>49523726Interesting. If your pic related is the movie you're talking about, I know it as Curse of the Dragonslayer.I agree that it's a lot of fun and worth a look, though.

And he's telling me about heavy metal and it's like his favorite movie, I had heard of it but never watched it and didn't know much about it.
